Fox's tatoos have been the topic of discussion here and there since they first appeared. So the story goes, they are his own tatoos and TPTB decided to work them into the show. I'm just going on heresay and bad memory, and can't remember if that was stated on an official podcast or in a Cuse/Lindelof interview. Anyone else have better references on that?

After TPTB reveal the Hieronymus Machine, then comes the Flux Capacitor????

'Night all!

The line that you mentioned, Pic, from Mao's poem, "Ten thousand creatures, under frosty a sky,
all fighting for freedom," seems so odd in view of how Mao turned China into a rigid Communist state, seriously lacking in freedoms of any kind!

Yay, Capcom, I vote for the Flux Capacitor!

lol dont know much about China. my school havent chosen to cover China for our GCSE's this year we're diong america instead (ah the joys of being sixteen, countless hours learning nothing....)

but i liked the reference to how (even if they are MF's tats) how that could link to the island. with everybody asociated with the island fighting for their freedom from something. Charlie - heroin
Jack - His dad ect ect. and just fighting for freedom to get off the island

Pic, you'll learn more history and science here on this blog than you EVER will in school. LOL!

Just out of curiousity, what are "GCSE's"?

picsel said...

lol your probably right with the teachers i have.

GCSE's are a set of exams. you choose your subjects. study them for two years and then you take exams in each of your chosen subjects. then the qualification you get at the end is a GCSE. just a way of the government telling employers who are the smartest. and who are the thickest lol.

Friday's_Child said...

I've never heard of this (GCSE's). Is this in the U.S.?

(Sorry I'm taking so long to respond each time. I'm trying to find out how to watch "Las Vegas" online, cuz I missed it last night. Minutes after it started, my stupid phone rang at the EXACT same time that some homeless guy started pounding on my door! Must be fate? LOL! Yikes!)

Thank you, Memphish, for posting the link for Powell's blog! I'm enjoying it very much!

In case anyone missed it, here it is:

(Sorry to post the link in such an old-fashioned, non-HTML way, but what can I say? Maven taught us once how to do this in HTML, but geez, that was MONTHS ago! LOL!)

Goodnight all!

I know the one tattoo is from when he was on Party of Five.

I vote for the Flux Capacitor. My daughter watches the Disney Channel 24/7 and there's a little boy band The Jonas Brother's that has a song called The Year 3000 and they reference the Flux Capacitor.

Hey! So I'm skipping over 400 comments because I haven't seen the episode yet. But Admin, this really got to me:

I dealt with unidentifiable health issues a few years back. ... My mental & emotional states "felt" stable and normal but it was really getting to me physically.

I've been dealing with stuff and have started counseling. At the same time I've been having some physical symptoms. (Sorry, Ded, not abdominal pain although I have had that too.) Just thought it was funny that I haven't checked all week and there at the top of the post that related. Amazing! But then that's how this week's been. I'll check in again after watching the ep.

Hey all! Just popping in one more time before I go out of town. Skimmed over the comments for now. Picsel's info on the hieronymus (did I spell that right?) machine is very interesting and I like that theory. Since the article referenced psionics, I looked that up on wiki...if someone else posted this please forgive...
According to wikipedia, there are several areas to psionics and under the heading "passive abilities" this was written:
Passive abilities generally deal with the mind and/or nervous system. This area is generally considered to include telepathy (Sensing or affecting thoughts), empathy (sensing or affecting emotions), precognition (predicting future events), remote viewing (seeing a location without the use of physical eyes), and nervous system-related effects (sensing or affecting the senses and/or nerves of others).

Does anybody remember the old Dharma site pre-TLE that had all the projects listed that Dharma was supposedly researching- weren't ESP and remote viewing two of those? Couple that with the precog ability that Desmond seems to have, Walt's abilities to seemingly make things appear, Locke's ability to walk now, etc. and maybe there is something to the hieronymus theory. Oh well that's all for now. Hopefully I'll be able to check in this week otherwise I'll have an unbelievable amount of comment reading to do when I get back!

Ok two more things-
memphish- like the new avatar! and
twinkle- sorry to hear about your troubles. Hope you are able to work out things soon.

picsel said...

do you think that TPTB simply made Hieronymus appear pretty blatently as a clue because we hadnt researched it before hand?

Because im sure it would have been suitable enough to have the sign read "The Musical Stylings of Charlie Pace"

Quick post on the tattoos. It is my understanding that those are Matthew Fox's tattoos and he doesn't explain them to the general public. He repeated that in the recent Emmy board and he discussed it in an Official Lost Podcast last year.

When MF got cast as Jack he figured he'd have to spend everyday in makeup getting them covered, but instead TPTB decided to incorporate them into Jack's character especially given that the big one on his shoulder has the number 5 on it and they wanted to do that counting to 5 thing in the Pilot.

I've seen people on and off primarily on The Fuselage try to analyze MF's tattoos and their meaning, but he has never confirmed or denied that anyone understands them.

As for how they will tie into the show, my guess is that they will be told entirely from Jack's point of view and not be what MF intended with them. I'd also guess that TPTB will feel free to take poetic license with the Chinese characters to make it fit their story and not again what MF intended or what anyone else might "read" them as.

I'm hoping after what Ms. Hawking (old jewelry store lady) told Desmond that the tattoos will somehow have marked Jack as a person to be brought to the island. After Flashes Before Your Eyes and the whole universe course correcting thing, I'm finally beginning to believe that "each one of [them] was brought there for a reason," to quote Locke, and that it is indeed "the Island" who did it.

I'll be back this afternoon.

Great job on the discussion yesterday everyone.

picsel said...

yeah thats what i think too after reading everything. they are his own tats. but surely TPTB cant just "change" the meaning of words lol.

they would have to stick to what they mean. i mean 3/4 of lost is about symbolism and mythology so can theyreally just edit the meaning of a tattoo? lol

memphish said...

picsel,

It's my understanding with the use of Chinese characters and tattoos mistakes are often made, and what you think you are getting and what you in fact get are often different. I wouldn't be surprised if something like that happened to Jack.

On the ABC website there's a new feature under Extras that talks about the writers. One of the writers says they are currently reading: World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks Guess they are getting ready for Season 7 despite the ratings issues.

Hey, everyone! Just checking in and there's a gazillion posts! My head is spinning from all the great research and theories out there. Picsel: you did a great job finding out all about the Hieronynmus Machine...I really have to think about that one.

Re: The Gannon Car Rental brochure crossover. I used to work for a production company (many moons ago) and it was always difficult to come up with company names that were cleared for use. Even though I would like to think it's a shoutout of some sort, it's probably just the prop guys sharing stuff on the lots and so the production staff doesn't have to clear another name or company.

Aradia said...

Maven - I agree about the car company. There are companies here in LA that specialize in different types of props (like ones that provide all morgue equipment, or labels for products etc...) Since it's been popping up so much on so many shows I have to think maybe the brochure came from a paper props company. And the crossover, while fun to watch out for, is just coincidence.

picsel said...

ah okay, never thought about it that way (having to clear names) but still im guessing hundreds of companies have the same names so wouldnt make much difference lol..

i for one would definitely buy apollo candy, or rent a car from gannon. or get my diapers from that diaper hting - JUST because it had the same name as a company in LOST lol

1921 again

http://users.newblog.com/thinbluemime/?post_id=5411

Last years ARG had a set of clues revolving around a computer with a name plate "tommy" and a letter
from the VIK Institute complaining of treatment of autistic savants by Mittlewerk

Doing a wiki search today for 1921 revealed the rock opera "Tommy" had a song in it titled "1921"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1921_(song)

I wonder if Karl was, is, or shall be a savant?

Hi Peeps!

Wow, Fox had the huge tacky tattoos way back during Party of Five?! Thanks for the memory refreshing on them also Memphish. Well, I certainly hope that TPTB make up something weird about them! :o) It's true that there are often many translations to Chinese characters. That's funny that someone (Fox) would put HUGE, in-your-face tattoos on both sides of, and down his arm, and then say that he doesn't want to explain them. And they are not really that attractive or artistic either.

Picsel, don't ever think that you're wasting time studying anything. You can always build on basic knowledge to learn bigger things later. Just look how we do that with Lost! And you are very good at that too. :o)

Twinkle!! Nice to have you back on the blog, but I'm sorry to hear that things are rough right now. I was wondering why we hadn't heard from you this week. Keep the faith, you're in our thoughts and prayers, of course.

Scoupost, yes, the original HF site did mention remote viewing studies. I wonder if TPTB will use RV in the show, I hope so. The process is/was kind of creepy, I read a book about its supposed use by both US and Soviet military.

That's definitley wierd about Tommy/1921, TBM. Hmmm.

Aaagh! It's like getting the next and final Harry Potter book in three page increments! Aaaagh!

(BTW, I just saw the episode.)

Aaaagh!!

Capcom said...

That's a very good way to put it Twinkle! I noticed though that when I watch the season 1 and 2 DVD episodes one right after the other, it is very satisfying and not at all as choppy as they seemed to me, when viewed one per week. I'm sure everyone is thinking "duh", that I said that, but I was really surprised at how they all flowed when viewed in succession! Can't wait till next fall when S3 DVDs are out, with the extras! :-D

That was my first impression as well.

Scout and Capcom: Thanks for your kind concern. I'm in good hands! This week was a doozy but I'm gaining so much! See you on SOTL!

I've recommended to a few friends who have dumped or been afraid to start Lost to pick it up on DVD. It would probably help my stress levels too. ;-)

Hey it's Monday morning, I wonder what this is??

500th!

BTW, Tommy the movie was on this past Saturday night. Hubby and I watched a little bit, but if you think Desmond and Locke have weird dreams, they are nothing compared to that movie.

I'm working on a Desmond theory and will post it on the new thread, if I like it.

What is the meaning or significance of the two skeletons that Jack and Kate found in the cave of season 1?
CUSE: The answer to that question goes to the nature of the timeline of the island. We don't want to say too much about it, but there are a couple Easter eggs embedded in [the Feb. 7 episode], one of which is an anagram that actually sheds some light on the skeletons and hints at a larger mythological mystery that will start to unfold later in the season.........Any thoughts on what these easter eggs are???

Capcom said...

Interesting. Didn't someone theorize here that the skellies could be Jack/Sawyer and Kate? It would be fascinating if they were looking at themselves in the future in the Lost Time Loop!

So far have we only gotten the egg of "Lost Time" out of Mittelos, did we find another clue?
