My idea is that They took Sawyer to force Kate's hand and Kate to force Jack's hand.

When they started up the communicator and told Jack to open the door, that was definately done so they would achieve that particular effect.

Been saying for a week or two now (and I'm sure I wasn't the only one) that any deal Jack would make with Ben to "get off this damn island" would be a true deal with the devil, since Jack doesn't know they're on a second island. Ben will keep his bargain 100%. But it won't be anything Jack wants.

Mike V. said...

I totally predicted that the walkie would kick in at the very last second. They couldn't kill Sawyer off. Yet.

Cam794 said...

frogurt yes i think the same thing about S,J and K. also looks like we know who Kate chose then. ;)

i really thought sawyer was going to bite the dust. no character on lost is EVER safe. they killed eko last week, they would really catch us off-guard if they did away with sawyer too.

I think they'd lose way too many viewers if they killed Sawyer

Black Swan said...

You're remembering it right, jgz350. Jack said he accidentally spliced something (pouch?) and the nerves all spilled out like angel hair spagetti. He got his composure, counted to 5, and went back in to fix it all and everything turned out all right.

sean said...

jgz-
i remember he talked about doing an operation on a little girl, but accidentally did something wrong and messed up her nervous system.

i remember a quote was "her nerves flowed out like angel-hair pasta" or something like that.

Cam794 said...

jgz350:yea thats the story in a general explination.

Mike V. said...

sean - I think this is the formula = (total number of episodes / number of characters that have had flashbacks)/ number of flashbacks particular character has had = Chance character will stay alive as a percentage.

(54 / 15) / 5 = 72%. (That was Sawyer)

i wish there was a formula like that. it would make it a lot easier. i dont think i can wait 3 months to see what happens next.

Mike V. said...

No one other htan Sean is paying attention to my formula. Pay attention this time. :P

Well, I really enjoyed the epi. because I tried to go in with low expectations.

I really hated the fact that Kate and Sawyer apparently did the ... you know, and I'm frankly totally confused about Kate and Jack. So "The Look" from the end of Live Together, Die Alone" was just a plan? Why didn't Kate and Sawyer still try to run? Why didn't any of the Others know that Kate and Sawyer could leave their cages?

By the way, there is apparently a way to get from Island #1 to Island #2 because Alex did it. It surprised Pickett, et al that Alex was there. How'd she get there they asked. So there is some way off?

I can't wait to watch this one again, and I can't wait until February. Man! The end of this one did not disappoint.

Kate's flashback:

Kate is on the run. Kate finds a man. Kate falls for man. Kate gets it on with man. Kate is reminded that she is always on the run. Kate ends it with man to protect him. Kate runs.

Kate's present:

Kate is captured and wants to run. Kate is held prisoner with a man. Kate begins to fall for man. Kate gets it on with man. Kate is reminded that she is a prisoner and wants to be free. Kate is desperate to do someting to protect man. ______?_______ (you fill in the last blank)

Cam794 said...

sean said...

i personally dont even know the point of the flashbacks anymore. they seem like mostly filler if you ask me. im more concerned about the present (December 2004) than there people's pasts. i think they should only use flashbacks when it is absolutely needed to advance the island plot.

just my opinion.

memphish said...

So who's volunteering to tape Daybreak every week and put the promos on YouTube?

Cam794 said...

it looked like Tom was gonna cry when he was tellin Pickett to give the walkie to Kate

memphish said...

Sean,

I think I'm with you on the flashbacks. At this point there are minor details we might like to know like who the real Sawyer is and how Locke ended up in a wheelchair, but what I'd like to see is more island flashbacks. Like why were Kate's wrists so banged up after breakfast? I still don't know. After all, they weren't like that after the crash landing on the island which she endured in handcuffs.

memphish said...

I guess everyone's gone. Hope you Left Coasters enjoy the epi. Talk to you tomorrow.

Capcom said...

Evening Friends, we got about 40 minutes tonight, but that includes "Previously on Lost" and the previews for the next ep. I also would like a lot less flashbacks now, they are getting to be annoying when more island time is what I want to see. Perhaps every other ep could have flashbacks, I could deal with that. I agree with Bookpolice about the meaning of Kate's flashbacks, and also that it seems as if she realizes that she has finally found someone with whom she doesn't have to pretend to be someone else with. She doesn't have to do "taco night" with Sawyer. Why we needed to know that more than we needed to know who Mr. Patchy was, well, who knows. BTW, who didn't guess that there was something special in the iced tea for hubby? :-) Also, Kate calling the marshall reminded me of the movie "Catch Me If You Can".

I thought that it was great to see Jack get the upper hand tonight, he even trumped Juliet's "oops" plan for Benry's operation! Way to go Jack. Hope the plan doesn't backfire.

Biggest disappointment for this ep..........no commercial with a 1-800 number to call for updates on the new and improved Hanso Foundation (i.e., TLE Part Deux). Rachel is probably lounging on a Hanso owned beach sipping umbrella drinks in her giant sunglasses by now. :-\

TLCM, take care of yourself and know that we are all praying and cheering for your return to good health.

Tess315 said...

Yeah I'm with bookpolice and capcom
Kate has finally relized she doesn't have to run anymore. The detective said he'd leave her alone if she could stay put "but we both know that isn't going to happen". Also I don't remember the name of the episode but the one when she digs up the time capsule with her old boyfriend he said something like you always want to run or something like that. The flashback just shows a pattern one that she may have finally broken.

Tess315 said...

Oh and someting I found strange.

They'll have to figure out which way north is from the sun or something since compasses don't work on the island. Do you think he should be standing where they buried Eko when he lifts up his eyes and looks north? How about he looks north at precisely 3:05pm?

memphish said...

East Coasters - was the scene in the previews with Pickett telling Sawyer that he's not dead yet because they still need him missing, or was it just me?

And n.i.k. -- good point about Ben asking about Alex. And why did Juliet lie?

And so explain to me people, which guy is Kate not running from anymore, because I'm totatlly confused by this one. You sleep with one guy and don't try to run when the coast is clear, and you won't leave the other one when you know the coast is not clear. I'm baffled.

Great episode, but I don't think it'll be enough to keep anyone full until February.

Some elated points -

- When Henry walks in on Jack in the monitor room. Jack puts him up at gunpoint, and Henry says, "I guess this my the proverbial nail in the coffin." On one hand you feel a triumph for the Losties, but on the other -- man, that scene made you really pity Henry. The actor's facial expressions were perfect.

- Again, when Jack takes the upper hand in the surgery room. Mr. Beardy seemed like he was going to cry.

- Who was on the intercom? Juliet? Ben? Alex? Either seems plausible.

- At this point, the Others are at the complete mercy of Jack and Kate. Kate's going to be demand not to leave without Sawyer...and the Others won't have a choice, because if Kate doesn't leave, then Benry is dead. In the same way, Kate can request some kind of boating service.

Episode wasn't the best, but it sure was great.

maven said...

Episode was pretty good...a little too soap opera-ish, though. Well, all you eastcoasters are probably gone. Just want to jot down a few things while it's fresh in my mind:

1. Funny line: Sawyer to Kate, "I know how to get a damn fish biscuit!"

2. We know Kate/Monica's wedding was fast. She had been on the run, find a great guy. But it's not in her make-up to stay put and be happy homemaker. Remember, she couldn't stay put on that ranch in Australia, either.

3. Locke seems to need to find a reason for Eko's death. Is he now heading north as it says on Eko's stick? I don't know why that would be the reason for Eko dying...he could've shown Locke the saying on his stick any old time!

4. When Alex caused the "compound breach" and came storming in with her slingshot drawn...I thought of David vs Goliath! LOL She wanted to know where Karl was. Why does she ask for Ben and not Juliet?

5. Another funny Sawyerism: (to Kate) "How was your day honey?" after Danny throws him into cage. Makes them seem like old married folks...maybe a reference to the Monica flashback.

6. So Kate doesn't know they're on Alcatraz Island. Sawyer didn't want her to give up hope.

7. Letting Jack find the monitors so he can see Sawyer and Kate was part of the plan. They let Sawyer and Kate get it on (in broad daylight), so it will work on Jack to get him to do the surgery.

8. When Jack says, "I need your word. I need to get off this island." and Ben says: "Done." Jack is unaware that there are 2 islands, and Ben agrees to his demand knowing full well that he's telling the truth about getting Jack off Alacatraz Island only.

9. In the operating room, Juliet says "I've always been very good at following orders." What happened to her "free will"?

10. Ben's about to go under the knife, and he is concerned about Alex asking about him. Juliet lies, why?

11. Danny says: "Shepard wasn't even on Jacob's list." Who's Jacob? Mr. Patchy?

Stelven said...

Hi all.
Just been lurking since ComicCon but figured I'd post about the "Big Finale".

Can't say I was really surprised by anything in the episode. A bit of a bummer really.

One line made it worth it though...

Ben to Jack: If I were a betting man I would have had my money on you.

So are we now supposed to believe that Ben is Alex's father? So that makes the scientific expedition that Rousseau was on.... the DHARMA Initiative?

Oh and, just what did Alex have in that slingshot?

|S|

Justin said...

I never thought of that, stelven. Maybe Rousseau's scientific expedition was the Dharma Initiative? I can't believe I never made that connection...even though it seems so simple and straightforward right now.

Although, there are some kinks in that theory. Rousseau couldn't have been on the island for more than twenty years, unless she were lying. But the Dharma Initiative has been there longer than that...and she made it sound like her group was a pioneer.

Also, we already now Rousseau's reason for being on the Island - the numbers. That means that the Initiative was already there, because the antennae was already there.

Just some thoughts.

maven said...

The Alex stuff makes me think that Ben was her surrogate parent once she was taken from Danielle. Ben asks about her just before he goes under the knife.

Berimon said...

Maven said "The Alex stuff makes me think that Ben was her surrogate parent once she was taken from Danielle."

He beat me to it. I don't think that Ben is her biological Dad, but just the person she was raised to believe was her Dad. A variation on Kate's background.

Jacob is almost undoubtedly the character we know as Ethan Rom. Ben used a pseudonym while he could, there is every reason to expect Ethan to do the same. Also of note, S3E1 when Ben sends Ethan and Goodwin out, he tells them that he wants a list of names ASAP. This is the only logical conclusion, assuming that Jacob isn't someone new to the show.

Maven asked "Ben's about to go under the knife, and he is concerned about Alex asking about him. Juliet lies, why?"

Because you don't subject a surgery patient to any undue stress if at all possible. That's the simplest explanation. It's also possible that Juliet doesn't expect him to live, and denying him this information is a very small, petty bit of revenge.

Maven also asked "I don't know why that would be the reason for Eko dying...he could've shown Locke the saying on his stick any old time!"

Maybe the specific time and place he found the stick have some bearing on it. For example, it could be leading him to the next station, and a different starting position would not lead him to the same place. Also, the circumstance lends weight to the importance of the message, otherwise Locke may well have dismissed it.

Stelvin said "So that makes the scientific expedition that Rousseau was on.... the DHARMA Initiative?"

The timeline pretty specifically precludes this. The DI was founded in the early 70s, and Rousseau landed on the island in the late 80s. This assumes that anything the "crazy french chick" ever said was true.

Memphish said "And so explain to me people, which guy is Kate not running from anymore, because I'm totatlly confused by this one."

Ok, this leads into my Kate theory. I think that during the missing time between breakfast with Ben, and joining Sawyer at the cages, the Others gave her the same deal that they offered Jack. Help us and we get you off the island. Kate needs to run. It's so ingrained in her at this point, that she couldn't stop if she wanted to.

Her flashback this episode shows how even when she has is made, settled down and safe, she can't stop running. So despite being in love with Captain Mal, she betrays him and starts running again. The same can be said for Sawyer, she loves him, but despite that, she can't stop, so she's going to betray him, and (try to) get off the island.

If you watch Kate closely this season she has been very passive since Ben's Breakfast, just going along and biding her time. She tried to get Sawyer to run, but showed no inclination to do so herself. The only reason Kate would do this is if she already had an out. Remember the raft, and how she tried to get onto that?

Last thing: the semantic argument about Ben saying "this island". Either he's the lying scumbag I think he is, in which case his word is junk anyways, or I'm wrong and he will honor the spirit of the bargain and actually send Jack home. Remember, Ben seems to genuinely believe that he's one of the good guys. I don't think he'll go the nit-picking route and just send Jack back to Lost Island.

However, the point may well be moot, as he's going to be pretty pissed once he finds out what Jack did during the surgery.

Alright, I'm done. Tell me if I'm wasting too much space, I seem to take up a lot more real estate with my posts than most of the people here, I'll try to trim it down.

Later..........

Darryl Cunningham said...

Hi Berimon

I don't think Ethan is Jacob. Ben called him Ethan when sending him on his mission, which makes me conclude that Ethan was his real name. Why would Picket refer to him by another name? As somebody else suggested above, Jacob is very likely The Man With The Eyepatch. Being as Mr Eyepatch is only new character introduced lately, whose name we don't know, does make this conclusion seem likely.

minnesotawriter said...

From the shadows I theorize:

Jacob = Him = The Eyepatch Guy

Sawyer can't die as Josh Halloway is contracted for six seasons.

The new Kate flashback is relevant as it underscores her problem with men, that being her inability to commit to one love.

That's all for now. What's the deal with those mobisodes???

Chris Procter said...

Hi Guys,

Well I meant to post earlier but then I had half of one of my teeth fall out (bloody toffees!).

I'm off to the dentist but I thought I'd just make a few quick comments.

I agree there is some kind or relationship between Ben and Alex and a foster parent is a possibility, but I still think Ben might be Alex's biological father.
I'm also convinced the two islands are seperate, we know that Alex was on the Island earlier, I'm sure that the otheres have more than just the sub, she could have taken a small inflatable across or a small rowing boat, it's not that far!

I'm not convinced that Eyepatch Man is Jacob, but it's certainly a possibility, as is Paulo ;)

The big question is did Jack really cut one of Ben's hepatic blood vessels which seems pretty nasty and leaves a tricky repair job for Jack or is it as I suspect just a bluff in order to facilitate the escape of Kate.

Of course I haven't actually seen the episode yet!

Anyway I've got to go off to the dentist so I'll catch you all later, if I haven't had all my teeth pulled and then charged a fortune for the pleasure (oh and did I mention dental anesthetics seem to have no efect on me!).

Fun, fun, fun

See Y'all later

My take on Kate's flashback and the relevance:

In her flashback, she has to pretend to be someone she isn't and will always be looking over her shoulder. Her husband loves a "fake". She's relieved the pregnancy test came up negative because how could she bring a child into this world in her current situation?

In present day, we see the opposite. With Sawyer, she doesn't have to pretend anymore -- he loves her just the way she is.

What will happen if she ends up being pregnant because of their tryst? Did the Others not stop them in hopes that she would get pregnant?

Something else... When Jack was talking/yelling to Ben and Juliet about not doing the surgery and he threw the papers, I was so ready for him to tell them to ef off. Wishful thinking.

Last thought... towards the end when Jack is talking to Kate on the walkie talkie, I was afraid that Jack was going to say something to the effect "Do you know the story I told you after we crashed? It was a big lie. I really wasn't on the plane and I'm an Other".

I will not be posting the video on YouTube. All of the other videos were removed from YouTube yesterday by TPTB.

Here are the questions:

I Do - Jack makes a decision about Ben's offer, and Sawyer's life hangs in the balance.

• You're Gonna Die: Ben's one chance to live is gone when Jack informs him he won't operate on him. Is there is a gleeful madness to Jack's outburst?
• It Brought Us Here: Sayid asks Locke about the monster. Locke thinks it may have brought them there and why Eko died. Is Locke waiting for his further instructions?
• They Killed My Boyfriend: Alex threatens Pickett and demands to know where her boyfriend is. She screams to Kate that her boyfriend will be killed as well.
• You Can Save Sawyer: Juliet asks Kate to talk to Jack. If she can convince Jack to do the surgery, Juliet can keep Pickett from killing Sawyer. Should Kate believe her?
• Monica, I Thee Wed: Kate marries a cop, Kevin, who doesn't know her true name. Is she as honest and faithful as the minister says she is?
• Together at Last: Jack realizes Kate's being used when she asks him to do the surgery to save Sawyer's life. Who is Kate choosing here, Jack or Sawyer?
• Stop Running: Kate asks the Marshal to stop chasing her. He agrees only if she really stops running and settles down. Is Kate able to stay put?
• Look North, John 3:05: While burying Eko, Locke sees a message on Eko's walking stick. Was Eko's death needed to bring Locke these instructions?
• Together at Last, Part 2: Kate and Sawyer finally consummate their relationship. Are they afraid Sawyer is going to die the next day? Or are they really in love?
• Honeymoon Abroad: Kevin bought tickets to Costa Rica for their honeymoon. Notice the airline name? Was Kate fated to end up on an Oceanic flight?
• I'll Do the Surgery: Jack sees Kate and Sawyer sleeping together. Is this why he agrees to do the surgery? To get off the island, away from Kate?
• I'm a Fugitive: Kate tells Kevin the truth about herself and leaves. Will she ever be able to stop running? Will Kevin also start chasing her?
• Who is Jacob?: Pickett is upset that Ben put his life in the hands of one of Them. Then he says Jack wasn't even on Jacob's list.
• Ben Goes Under: How can Ben put his life in the hands of a man he's held captive? Would you trust Jack to do the surgery?
• He's Got One Hour: Jack cuts Ben's kidney sac and threatens to let Ben die. What is Jack's plan? Is he going along with Juliet's request to kill Ben?
• Close Your Eyes: Pickett is going to kill Sawyer and make Kate watch. Why doesn't Sawyer fight back? Why has he given up?
• Don't Stop Running: Jack tells Kate she and Sawyer can get away. Kate doesn't want to go without Jack. Jack tells her to run. What will she do?

berimon: Here's my take on the list. I think it's the list Miss Klugh gave to Michael that's how they got kidnapped. I got out my dvd and looked at the list and James Ford was the last name on the list and it was in different color ink and to it looked like different handwriting. I don't know who put his name on the list or why. I actually thought I might find Jack's name being the one not on Jacob's list. I guess that's why Pickett's not worried about killing him.

Tess315 said...

Sorry that should say doesn't mean she's next.

It seems alot of people think Ben is going to keep his word and get Jack off the island, meaning just the hyrdra station island. This would be a trick of course and I think that is why people think this. I am thinking that there will be more to the trick because Ben told Jack that he would get him home after showing him the World Series video. Not that any of that will play out at all, but I just wanted to voice this thought...

Pickett said that "Shepard" (Jack) was not on the list, not Sawyer. Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer were on Ms. Klugh's list

I think the list he is referring to is the list of "good people".

DA, good luck at the dentist. Sounds like you need a crown. Have you tried gas? Also, you can get more than one novicane shot; I've had up to three just for one tooth. Just trying to help (not a dentist, just have had lots of work done).

I also wondered if Ben might actually be Alex's biological father. Danielle said her crew had the "sickness", but maybe it was the other way around and she's the one with the "sickness"

ular98, agree with Kate's issues with men because of her father issues. But,
I do think whe was enjoying being married and acting susy-homemaker. She knew she had to run again because of the honeymoon tickets to Costa Rica where she'd have to get a passport and she knew she couldn't do that. She has to keep running because the marshal won't give up on her. To me, she seemed genuinely sad that the pregnancy test came back negative. I think she made a deal with herself that if the test came back positive, she'd tell hubby the truth about everything and try to live through a trial.

Sayid'sgirl, good work on researching the list...especially interesting that James Ford was written in later.

Dennis, thanks for the AMEx info. Interesting that they took the vids off youtube. BTW, you only need to input the phone number, you don't need to type a name.

GOODWIN: Nathan was not a good person. That's why he wasn't on the list.
ANA: What about the kids? Did you kill them, too?
GOODWIN: Children are fine. They're better off now.

Jacob is almost certainly not Ethan. We know that Ethan never even got around to making his list. In an episode a long time ago, we saw Tom Friendly scolding Ethan for failing to make his list and going ahead and abducting Claire (this is in the Staff station). Ethan defends himself by telling Mr. Friendly that the Losties had discovered that he (Ethan) wasn't on the plane.

Good morning and welcome to the Lost Desert Days until February. I'm here to say, once again, I was wrong. Even Benry wouldn't allow himself to be cut open for a long con. (I had said that the whole surgery thing was a scam.)

I liked this episode but I wanted more. Maybe three months of rewatching will reveal things we didn't see last night.

Some thoughts: I think Jack realized that he loved Kate even if she didn't love him the same way. Jack rocks, by the way. Loved the way he got the Others by the short ones. Did Alex really believe she could overcome guys with guns with a slingshot? Juliet is creepy. She has a Benry smile. What really happened to Kate? She didn't answer when Jack asked her if they hurt her. She has been so passive. And finally, six episodes of victimization is enough. I'm ready for Locke to show up with an army of Losties (not the little gangs they usually do) and kick some Other butt.

Yes I know all four were on Miss Klugh' list. I meant when I heard he wasn't even on Jacob's list I thought that it would be Jack. Then when I looked at the dvd I assumed it was Sawyer because of the differences in the writing and the ink color.
I guess Pickett said Sheppard I haven't watched it again so I guess I was wrong there but I still think they are talking about Miss Klugh's list.

Barbarjay, LOL Lost Desert Days..

I was wrong, too. I didn't even think it was Ben's x-ray. Imagine the elaborate theories we can develop with 3 months of nothing else?

Dennis, will talking about the snippets they'll be showing during "Daybreak" be considered spoilers and thus not allowed on this blog?

Morning all:

Sayid'sgirl: Danny definitely said: "Shepard wasn't even on Jacob's list." This is a different list than Miss Klugh's or anyone else's. I guess they like to make lists. Very annal retentive. LOL

You're probably right It's a completely different list. That's what I thought while watching the show but then I got caught up in the conversations here and I changed my mind. I guess we'll all have to wait 13 weeks to find out what all these list are all about.

tlcm said...

It came to mind that perhaps "the long con" has been an agreement between Jack, Kate, and Sawyer (remember "the look" before the others put the bags over J&K's head). Maybe before they met up with the others they planned something because Jack told them in "Live Together, Die Alone" that he wouldn't have brought them that far with out a plan. Of course, we thought that plan was Sayid, Sun, and Jin on Desmond's boat but what if there was another plan, one that will be revealed in a future flashback.

I mean this could explain Kate's passiveness. The others made some kind of a deal with her between breakfast and her arrival at the cages. They've been playing the losties against each other through this entire season so far. Sawyer couldn't tell Kate about the fake pacemaker; and Kate definitely was not telling Jack everything during their little visit last night. Everybody seems to be trying to protect the other. This all seems too coordinated to be coincidence....

or am I just imagining ??????

Codysmom said...Will talking about the snippets they'll be showing during "Daybreak" be considered spoilers and thus not allowed on this blog?

I'm not sure how that's going to play out. David will have to make that call.

It would be nice to have something to do during the 3 month hiatus. I still haven't seen anything about the Mobisodes, and if they were going to do them, you would think that they would have advertised them during the finale.

maven said...

Welcome, bank, to de-lurking!

Yeah, I agree with you. Jack doesn't seem that concerned about Sawyer. Could he really be so jealous?

tlcm: Good call on that look between Kate and Jack. Sawyer wasn't in on that look was he? (Hope you're doing okay.)

tlcm said...

There was a "look" between Jack and Micheal too but we haven't seen anything that develop some kind of a plan involving Micheal and Walt yet. I don't think that Kate will leave without Sawyer and Jack. I don't think Jack will leave without Kate and Sawyer. And although I have a sliver of doubt in my gut; I don't think Sawyer will leave without Kate and Jack. I could be wrong.

I want to believe the pack was one would not leave without the others but the pack could be "every man for himself." Sawyer said it but he didn't mean it at least not for Kate.. Oh! maybe the pack is who ever gets away first is to lead the rest of the losties to rescue those left behind.

okay, now I'm back to square one...........

anything is possible...

it's going to be a long three months

Hey guys, still catching up on everyone's comments. Good stuff. Got a busy day though so won't be around much.

Will be thinking about the "Sneak Peeks" and "Mobisode" and how we'll handle them during the break. We'll put up a post about it next week sometime after the podcast.

Wanted to let everyone know that there is a new post over at storiesofthelost.com. If you missed last week's discussion over there about Eko, it got DEEP. Check it out if you get bored over the break! Everyone's always welcome to join our conversations regarding the thematic elements of the show...the more the merrier.

Capcom said...

Hi all, great comments!

Inflatables!!! Geez DA, I didn't even think of that, it's very possible that the Others could have some stashed around that our Heroes could use to get off Falcatraz, if they find them....let's hope so. Good luck at the Dentist.

I am in the camp that thinks that *maybe* the Kate and Sawyer mating scenario was also completely set up by the Others. When "Chinatown" told Sawyer to make sure he did whatever (I can't remember what he said) with Kate tonight, it made me think of when soldiers go off to war and they get one last night with their loved ones. It immediately felt like a setup to me, and if Kate gets pregnant, then they'll have a new baby to take and raise. But, I could be 100% wrong. :-)

Something on my wishlist for the Feb season is this: I would like to see Ben recover and get a whole new outlook on life. Now that he has had to beg for his life, it would be nice if he now has obtained a respect for other people's lives, and will no longer cause harm to the Lostaways and will respect their human rights and dignity. BTW, who would have thought this past summer, that we'd be talking about Ben having tumors?

Dennis, I was confused about Jack's attitude when Kate was talking to him. Maybe he was just so fed up with Ben and Juliet's tricks that he got ticked off and didn't want to talk to anyone, about anything, pertaining to Ben's op. On the other hand, it might have been all a part of Jack's plan to get the upper hand? But I do think that he seemed genuinely happy to see Kate and it looked like she had that old glint in her eyes for him as well. She better get her act together. Their awkward half-trying to touch through the glass was a tender moment. And that's a good theory that Jack now just wants to get off the island away from Kate, now that she has chosen between him and Sawyer. Also, that was way too obvious of a setup that someone just happened to tell Jack to try the door, he finds the TVs and sees S and K. That was dumb Jack, you took the bait. But at least he got them back with his little trick in the op room.

So apparently Jacob made a list about the Losties on the beach sometime after Ethan failed in his mission. If Jacob = Mr. Patchy, how could he have gathered intelligence on the Losties from wherever he his located. But if Jacob is not Mr. Patchy, who else could he be? Could the Losties have another infiltrator in their midst and not even know it?

blueheron13 said...

Question for all you folks:

When Alex was screaming "Where is he?" and so on, was she referring to her boyfriend (Karl?) or to Ben? From the context, is seems like she could be referring to either one.

Capcom said...

Interesting Blue, and if Ethan didn't finish his list, how and when did they find out that Jack was a spinal surgeon? After Benry escaped from the hatch? And then they quickly looked up on the internet all they needed to know about Jack? But Jack was specifically on the list that Michael got, so it would have to have been before Benry escaped from the Swan. Crud, I'm so confused. If I missed that, fill me in.

As far as Patchy getting information, he may have been given the names, and he just spent all this time in his Station of computers looking up info on everyone. Probably doesn't have much else to do.

Morning all!
I liked the episode, but didn't think it was quite the jaw dropper I expected. TPTB said that something would happen that would make us go "wow" or conclude that the show was jumping the shark- not sure that this happened.
You guys have already made a lot of good comments, and I don't have a lot to add-
I agree that it seems significant that something happened to Kate after the breakfast with Ben that she is not telling.
Also, I too wonder if Jack and Kate had some kind of "escape" plan worked out before they were captured, and if Jack's instructions to her at the end are part of that.
Last, (for now) I am wondering the same thing as blueheron- is Jacob another Other who has infiltrated the Losties that we don't know about yet.
Dark Angel- sorry about the tooth! Hope everything goes well at the dentist. Get the gas- maybe you will come up with some good Lost theories while under the influence- LOL. Hope this incident doesn't make you want to go back to chocolate.

Scoutpost said...

Good question about the timing Capcom- although I'm as confused as you are. About the lists- Jack was not on Jacob's list- does this possibly mean that Jack is not "good" but Kate and Sawyer are? Still leaves us guessing how they define "good". Second, why then was Jack on Ms. Klugh's list? Because he was a surgeon- now this goes back to Capcom's timing question. hmmmm

Capcom said...

Good point about contracts Goog. :-)

BTW, the term "jumping the shark" is SO appropos for this show! :-D I won't think of the original Fonzy meaning of the term anymore, now for me it will forever be "jumping the Dharma shark".

Scout, maybe they just wanted Kate and Sawyer for mating purposes....they're young, brave, strong-willed, good survivors, good at thinking on the run in adverse situations.....then whimpy Jack was thrown into the catch at the last minute to do Ben's surgery. Just thinkin'. BTW, it is so good to see Jack being in charge again and not being whimpy and whiney.

Aradia said...

Ok...so I haven't had a chance to catch up but i have to ask...cause it's buggin me

did anyone else get the feeling that Benry is Alix's dad?

Scoutpost said...

Agreed Capcom- it's good to see Locke and Jack not be weak and whiny anymore....but now Kate and Sawyer are being weak and passive! Someone alluded to this- but they all need to quit their little island cliques, get over themselves, join forces, come out with guns a blazin', kick some Other butt and get off that stupid island!

ib4uc said...

The lists that Goodwin and Jacob (maybe) put together, and the one Ethan was supposed to do, did not include Jack, Kate and Sawyer because they were not "good", or as Jack put it, they were damaged goods.

But the list Klugh gave Michael had their names because they were part of a master plan by the Others.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I thought things were when it came to the lists.

Also, what about the list that Ana Lucia found on a dead Other after their failed attempt to take more tailies? Whose list was that?

blueheron13 said...

Capcom and Scoutpost:

I'm just as confused about this list business as anyone. I just threw the questions out there for speculation. I don't think we know enough to form a definitive theory, although I do believe the original lists were intended to contain the names of the "good" people--the people that were supposed to be ambushed and taken. That theme of what maks a person "good" and what doesn't (in the eyes of the Others or Dharma research), that theme will be with us for the length of the show, I suspect. And probably tied in with Smokey as well.

blueheron13 said...

ib4uc,

I think it safe to assume the list Ana found was made by the Tailie infiltrator, Goodwin.

blueheron13 said...

Thinking more about it, it's now no surprise that Jack is not considered to be one of the "good" ones. The Others had ample opportunity to abduct him earlier, just like they could have abducted Kate earlier (such as the time when Mr. Friendly had them surrounded by torches). Light 'em up!

pJ said...

Boy, does this season of Lost blow.

6 episodes that could have been told in one? Any fans of the show since the first season should be throwing their hands up in anguish. I don't think anyone owes us, like say Comic Book Guy would, but I do think that this season has been boring, annoying and most of all, full of no surprises.

Example: Last night's flashback? C'mon. Predictable. So what she poisons her husband and leaves??? Anyone with half a brain would know, based on what we've already seen happen to Kate, that she leaves the guy at some point. Couldn't the writers have come up with something unique? Maybe that her husband was in on it? Or that maybe she actually is really someone named Monica and "Kate" is her phony name? Anything. And trying to tie in thematically with the idea that she can't commit, yet she can't leave Sawyer. Good lord. Talk about derivitive and trite.

End of Season 2 gave me hope that they would put their differences aside and realize that they need to band together.

But no, just like X-Files (which at least waited five seasons before starting to suck), they just drag on the theories that they can't answer and think they can string along an audience and never have a satisfying ending.

I have to say, I could use 13 weeks off from Lost.

isibell,

Yes, it appears likely now that Ben is Alex's dad, at least in a foster sense. I doubt that he is the biological father, though.

My theory is that one of the Island's properties is to render it's inhabitants incapable of having children (at least since the "incident" happened, anyway). Hence the Others' desire to abduct all the children. It could also explain Juliet's presence on the island. I believe, just as with Kelvin & Radzinsky in the hatch, that she was imported to the island relatively recently (in the 1990's). The Others needed some extra assistance: someone to keep pushing the damn button, and someone to try to solve their fertility issues.

However, Juliet and Kelvin were probably not told one key bit of information: you can help save the world, but once you arrive, you can never leave.

blueheron13 said...

ib4uc,

Isn't it interesting how one little comment, like "Shephard wan't even on Jacob's list", can generate so much speculation? To me, those little lines are a big part of what makes Lost simultaneously exciting and frustrating. Exciting because we have more plot to consider. Frustrating because we know we won't get complete answers for a long time!

minnesotawriter said...

Lost is great, and the writing has been great thus far...I say, let's stay on board and let Damon and Carlton (is it a spoiler to mention the writers? I mean, they do WRITE the show...) take us where they want the show (and us) to go...

Joseph Finchum said...

I have to say that I believe that Goodwin = Jacob. Goodwin isn't really a first name kinda name, IMO. Maybe this is who he was reffering to when he said Jacob. But if this is the case, of course he wasn't on the list because that would have been a list of the tailies not the main Lostaways.

All in all this episode sucked, They pumped it up and then let it go flat. It was luke warm at best and never really made it to hot. It didn't jump the shark but stopped short just before it. If the next episode doesn't give us the goods it will fall over the shark and stay there in my opinion.

Dark A - Been there too. I agree with everyone else... go for the gas, thats the good stuff. I too have immunities to the CAIN family of pain killers (Novacain,Idacain, Lidacain) none of them work on me either. If you have the same problem you have probly noticed that Advil doesn't work that well either. lol

I dont think Ben is Alex's Dad, but he may have been her gaurdian on the island. She may have been screaming his name because he really is the good one and I think this may be the case since we have never seen him out of the Hydra Station... have we?

Can anyone tell me what is so exclusive about those Amex things... I have seen them and they are just recaps of the episodes as far as I can tell. Nothing is ever new or exclusive. I think it's a rip-off.

Well what to do for thirteen weeks. I can't stand Tay diggs so I might not watch his show, but since I hate changing my VCR timers I may end up watching it anyway...lol

Also, why do they have to break Jack, Sawyer and Kate???? If the others really need them for something (like Jack and the operation) why don't they treat them well and get on their better side???? It does not make sense to make them enemies first and then have to break them for them to be compliant.

I agree this doesn't make sense. But perhaps this lends a clue as to who the others might be or what their motives are. I would think that they really think they are "good" but that the rest of the world would have a different view, so the only way to do anything is to brainwash/break people in order to get them to do what they want and/or join them? just speculating here.

Capcom said...

Right Blue, "You can check in any time you like, but you can never leave" :-) And I'm starting to suspect that in addition to "we won't get complete answers for a long time", if Lost doesn't last for 10 seasons, there are a lot of answers that we'll never get (unless TPTB write a book for us called "Everything You Wanted To Know About Lost"). I'm not a happy camper, been-there-done-that with the X-Files, even though TPTB swear in interviews that they are not going to X-File-us. I'll believe it when I see it.

I'm with you Ded, Jacob could be Goodwin's first name, although, he was never in contact with the Fusies (didn't live long enough), but it's still a possibility?

Man, I love all of everyone's ideas!!

Joseph Finchum said...

I can see your point there scout and Ratmanislost, but I think the reason they need to break them is because they have already deemed themselves as the enemy. With the kidnappings and such they have brought forward the hostile nature of the lostaways and therefore need to break them of this hostile intent in order to get anywhere with them. And it is only jack that they wanted to break IMHO.

Amused2bHere said...

Wow, what a cliffhanger! I think I'll refuse to what Daybreak just on principle that it's not LOST. I know someone will post the little teasers somewhere...shh!! don't tell TPTB...

So many good points made. My little bit:

Did we ever learn Goodwin's first name? could he be Jacob Goodwin? nah, he would have made a list of the Taillies, not Jack's group. Hmm, then I vote for Jacob being "Him".

They took JackKateSawyer to break Jack and get him to do the surgery. The Others really think they have to con everyone. Like Locke said to his dad about the kidney, all they had to do was ask and Jack would have done it. But the elaborate cons just made Jack say no. (And btw, I keep coming back to HOW ARE THEY GOING TO DO SURGERY WITHOUT A WORKING CRASH CART?. Please excuse the shouting, this is just too mindboggling for me.)

I think Kate was told that if she ran away they would kill Sawyer. That's why she won't leave without him. That is why she has been passive, she looks like she's keeping secrets from Sawyer (if you tell him what we said/did to you, we'll kill him.)

more later, this is already too long...

I'm doing well, but I start back on chemo tomorrow morning. it's been a nice week off.

I'm not sure about Jacob's list. I mean just think about Ms Klugh's list. She knew they needed Jack for Ben's surgery so that means Ben either was on his way to ask Jack for help and got caught in Danielle's trap or he got caught on purpose. So they knew that Jack was a surgeon before Ben started for the swan hatch. Maybe they found out about Jack from Walt? I just can't get my brain around the time line here.

the tailies killed three others, right? Eko killed two the first night and Ana killed one two weeks later. So we know that Goodwin some how got a message back to the camp or the others got the names from the first captives and wrote the list that ana found. we don't know exactly when ana became suspicious of goodwin but I'd say it's safe to assume it was after nathan escaped/died. Maybe jacob was one of the others that Eko killed?

Okay I just remembered that Micheal was gone for about two weeks before coming back and killing ana and libby. Ben or Julie told jack that the x-ray was a week old. so Micheal could have told them about jack but he wasn't with the others for the entire two weeks. from what we saw he was at the fake camp only a day or so and Ms. Klugh already had jack's name on a list.

I'm rambling

too many list, and lies, and tigers and polar bears (oops sorry no tigers yet)

Jacob couldn't be among the fuselage losties, because he would have been outed by Hurley's census, like Ethan. And they would have noticed someone new.

I don't think Jacob can be Goodwin, since he would have only had the tailies on his list, so Jack wouldn't have been on it anyways.

I think it must be Mr. Patchy. He was probably in the Pearl Station, until it was found, monitoring the swan station and making lists. Now he's moved to another station (the flame?), and Locke is going to go north looking for him.

You get what you pay for :) Actually, the video are just recaps, but I think there has been a few interesting questions and screenshots. Most Lost fans are not part of a massive think-tank like TLC, so there is a lot of insight for those people.

mountain girl said...I believe he decided to do the surgery to help Kate and Sawyer. I think the image of the two of them desperately clinging to each other in a cage (his first view of them in a cage) moved Jack to want to help them.

I like that theory. It's like the cliche line "If you really love me, you'll let me go". He loves Kate, but when he realizes that she loves Sawyer, he decides he has to help her and save Sawyer.

He must trust Ben much more than Juliet now, because he could have let Ben die quietly, and Juliet said she would help him. By "disobeying" Juliet, he will have to save Ben in order to get any kind of deal now.

Capcom - you talked about the interaction between Jack and Kate in Jack's cell and Jack getting so upset so fast. Notice that Jack keeps looking at the camera. He knows they're being watched. I think that reaction was purely for Ben's sake, and to a degree, it worked. It annoyed Ben and he had Kate pulled out of there.

Goog - as to who's going to stop watching if major characters die, sign me up for the "I'll stop watching if they kill Jack," list.

Dennis, this is my own speculation based on TPTB's statement at Comicon that they're going to do something "mindblowing" mid-season (which I do not think meant last night). I'm not sure where that falls in the spoiler definitions. If I should remove this let me know, but since July I've been thinking that they are going to kill Jack and maybe even Kate and Sawyer too. Thus after 2 1/2 years of being invested in these characters I'm going to find out the show isn't really about Jack, but about Desmond.

And finally, on the speculation that the Others want Kate and Sawyer to mate. I think they may know about Clementine and they want Kate with Sawyer because he has proven to be fertile. Is Jack? Sarah's pregnancy test was negative, allegedly. (Also, is Kate? Her test was negative too.)

Dennis said...

DeDJeZTeR said... If the SUB was reffering to a tunnel... how did it return???

Maybe it is a SUBWAY tunnel, and the "stations" are train stations.

tlcm said...

Dennis, would you please save poor charlotte?

I'm going to stick to the idea that Jack and Kate have a pack (Sawyer has to know about it too, even though we didn't see him give "the look") and Jack is acting on that agreement with Ben's life hanging. some how this is going to get the three of them out of the clutches of the others. I don't know how they will get back to the lost island but I speculate that Alex will play a part in it.

I have to admit with Ben asking about Alex I wonder if we've gotten the wrong idea of him. I mean we see Alex as a "good" person, right? If she thought she would get the truth from Ben, you have to think that maybe he is the one to trust and it's Julia that's not so "good."

so I'm right back to where I was...

Others, and tigers, and bears, Oh may.....

This season, so far, Jack has been at the mercy of Ben & Juliet and became a wimp. Then, last night, Jack grew some nads and turned the tables first on Ben, when he told him he wasn't going to operate on him, then on Juliet, when he didn't follow her plan to kill Ben. He had his own plan.

That, to me, was the turning point of the season so far.

What if Kate wasn't Zeke's type (from back in ep one) cause Ben was Zeke's type, and Zeke was Ben's type. That would explain the almost waterworks from a man who, up to this point, has presented himself as rather butch (though not as threatening as Pickett).

HOW ARE THEY GOING TO DO SURGERY WITHOUT A WORKING CRASH CART?.

And a big supply of fresh blood for transfusion? In particular, if Jack really cut Ben to cause heavy bleeding (the assistant in the O.R. asks "should he be bleeding like that?"), they are going to need some extra blood after an hour of that. Where do they get it? Blood stays fresh for only about 3 weeks. A typical adult can only donate blood safely every 8 weeks. Even if Ben is Type O, that means he can accept from about 45% of an average population. So even if all the Others donated every 8 weeks on a regular schedule, say 1/3 of them every 3 weeks, you would only have blood from 1/3 of them on hand at any time, and only 45% of that blood would be useful.

If there are 100 Others, that would mean 14 pints max would be available. I don't think there are 100 Others, but it's possible.

How long can Ben lie there and bleed before they run out of blood?

April and Eli said...

engineer27 said...they are going to need some extra blood after an hour of that. Where do they get it?

Maybe the "list of good people" is a blood donor list - people that have Ben's blood type. The Others seem to be taking blood samples every chance they get.

Or, maybe they are using cloned shark or polar bear blood. :)

April and Eli said...

And maybe Walt was a universal donor, so they had planned to keep him for the rest of his life to harvest blood!

It makes me think of the movie Coma, which I've never seen, but they had all these people in comas hanging in a room, Matrix-style, like this:

http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Mptv/1362/6295_0024.jpg

What if they did this to all the "good" people, so they could harvest their blood. Creepy.

April and Eli said...

I saw Coma when I was like 12 and it freaked me out. First stay in a hospital, and I couldn't stop thinking of that image.

The simplest explanation though is that TPTB will overlook the shelf life of blood so that there is plenty to go around.

Exerpt from MSN article:

Throughout the history of “Lost,” the Others have always been several steps ahead of the former passengers of Oceanic Flight 815. That changed in the fall finale for the usual TV reason: Bad guys are dumb.

It’s hard to believe that a group smart enough to have Locke, Sayid and company running around in circles for more than two seasons would give one of the castaways access to their leader, anesthesia, medical instruments, and their secret plans to kill a fellow passenger, even if that person does happen to be a noted surgeon specializing in spinal surgery who has just seen footage of the woman he has the hots for in a compromising position with his rival.

But that’s what The Others did, which means Ben’s fate is uncertain until the show comes back in February. It serves him and the rest of the others right. Even the bad guys in James Bond movies tend to be more secure with their resources.

Capcom said...

Lifeobstacle....ouch, that comic strip hurt! :-) Let's hope TPTB get the message.

I agree with you Memphish about Jack's reaction. And you're right, TPTB did keep saying that the cliffhanger of the mini-season would be nothing short of mindblowing. I think that they are still grossly underestimating our Think Tank, as Dennis put it.

You are right Mountain girl, the ratio of new questions to answers to old questions is way too front-heavy, and TPTB are getting dangerously behind in the mystery-answering tempo of the story. I'm scared.

How long can Ben lie there Engineer27? Unfortunately until February. :-( I wonder what jack really cut, that can sit there and bleed out for an hour, without Ben losing too much blood? I thought that little moment of thought/hesitation before Jack made the cut was interesting.

BTW, I have to go with my theory of how to tell a good episode.......it shows in how good the blog comments and theories are, and for this ep they are awesome! :-)

Judging by the number of responses I got, I guess it was a pretty good question .... maybe not as good as "who is Jacob," though.

For my part, I have to agree with capcom: it's probable that Jack did something which would look bad to the inexperienced and cause the monitoring equipment to go haywire (blood pressure to rise, etc) without putting Ben into any real danger.

Jack could certainly pull it off. He's got a heck of a poker face (remember how he got the meds from Sawyer last season?)

Hey All Y'all,

PJ, you just shucked it right on down to the cob. Preach on brotha!!

Any fans of the show since the first season should be throwing their hands up in anguish.

I been thinking that for about 5 episodes now. But I ain't as concise as the Comic Book Man.

but I do think that this season has been boring, annoying and most of all, full of no surprises.

The scripts this season are annoying. The writers have gone from mysteries and clues to unanswered questions. They think we are so invested in the characters we care what happens to them and not the story. Well in a world where it's been proven that anyone can die at anytime, Now I only watch for the story. And it's sucking now, so many holes and inconstancies. It's like TLE game all over again! Then there's my new pet peeve, Paolo & Nikki. Anyone who has watched from the beginning know they weren't on flight 815, dispite what the spoilers say. The folks at work that watch lost are a bunch of sheeple. They are just worried about the poor people stuck on the island an how are they going to be rescued. Now they're tired of watching because of all the brutality toward the characters they care about.

I think this program has taken a wrong turn. I don't care if the show comes back in 13 weeks or 13 years.

More rant later.

I don't think the Others are stuck on Alcatraz, nor do I think it makes sense that they all rely on a single sub/rickety boat.

Again, there's a big sign that says Pala Ferry. Do we think the DI left and took the ferry with them? Or it's broke down and none of the others can fix it? Didn't Sayid said something like why is this dock here. Dammit read the sign! F E R R Y. Maybe ferry means something else in Iraqi.

Yeah Engineer27,

I thought about the crash cart but completely forgot about the blood. No way they've got any blood. And who was the anesthesiologist? It looked they were using Sodium Penathol . Is that even an acceptable drug for spinal surgery, or was Jack just trying to knock Ben out for a while.

Darryl Cunningham said...

Warning: wild theory ahead.

The theme of good and bad people recur constantly in Lost. Goodwin and Ethan Rom made lists of the crash survivors, but now it seems that there was yet another list: Jacob's list. Was this a list of the "good ones" within the Lostaway's group? When you consider the Other's obsession with good and bad people, this seems very likely. Based on no evidence at all, except my gut feeling about the way the Lost writer's work, I now suspect that Jacob is the Other's contact in the outside world, and originator of all the detailed information they have on the Lostaways.

Our stranded heroes are largely an unsavoury brunch, made up of con men, murderers, fugitives, torturers, junkies and who knows what else? Twenty years ago these people would have been the villains of most TV shows. Kate's story is basically The Fugitive: a TV show about an innocent man being chased everywhere by a US Marshall. The difference here is that Kate is guilty as hell. These aren't people you'd want to join your little idyllic community. There may be powerful reasons why the Other can't afford to have such morally tainted people among them. We now know, after Eko's death, that the smoke monster takes a dim view of who it considers to be morally corrupt. The creature is like the old testament God: judgemental and vengeful. It judged and killed Eko when it no longer needed him (to push the button).

On the blast door map there is a mention of a Cerberus system, which may have "catastrophically malfunctioned." There's no explanation on the map as to what this system is, but many Lost theorists believe that Cerberus is the name of the smoke monster, which has gone wrong after its creation by Dharma. Let's imagine that Cerberus was created to judge humanity, by downloading people's thoughts, and then sifting out the Bad people from the good. This would be an effective way of reducing the Earth's population and therefore changing the core values of the Valenzetti Equation (the numbers), and extending human civilisation beyond Valenzetti's doomsday prediction.

If the Cerberus system has gone dangerously rogue, then this would go a long way to explain the demise of the Dharma Initiative on the island. It also explains why the Others aren't to keen on having Bad people among them, as you wouldn't want to attract such a dangerous creature towards your little community.

Lastly, how does this explain the murders which Goodwin and Ethan committed. How were they able to kill without becoming bad people themselves? Well, perhaps it's as simple as they're allowed to kill, but only Bad people, and only in defence of their community. Goodwin actually said that, Nathan (the guy whose neck he broke), was not a "good person."

Thinking back to The Glass Ballerina, there was obviously some animosity between Juliet, Ben, and Colleen. Does the crash cart really not work, or did Juliet let Colleen die to spite Ben. Maybe she messed up the surgery on purpose and waited too long to get Jack, so Jack would be the one that let Colleen die. Then when Jack followed Juliet's plan and let Ben die, it would seem less suspicious.

About General Anaesthesia (From Wikipedia)

General anaesthesia can be induced by intravenous (IV) injection, or breathing a volatile anaesthetic through a facemask (inhalational induction). Onset of anaesthesia is faster with IV injection than with inhalation, taking about 10-20 seconds to induce total unconsciousness. This has the advantage of avoiding the excitatory phase of anaesthesia (see below), and thus reduces complications related to induction of anaesthesia. An inhalational induction may be chosen by the anaesthetist where IV access is difficult to obtain, where difficulty maintaining the airway is anticipated, or due to patient preference (eg. children). Commonly used IV induction agents include propofol, sodium thiopental, etomidate, and ketamine.

I don't want to argue with you, since you are entitled to your opinion, but I don't agree with you. You seriously want more Vincent screen time?

IIRC, This "mini-season" was designed to focus on the Others, I don't think they are planning to ignore the those characters for the rest of the season. The only reason we had the Eko story line was becasue they had to kill him off. And the Locke/eyepatch guy stuff was teaser for February.

Homer Thompson said... Which, given the commercial breaks every 5 minutes (anyone else notice this??), the run-time of Lost has to be a whopping 36-37 minutes.

I don't notice the commercials since I have Tivo :) But, come on ... almost every show on TV has the same amount of commercials. BTW,

This is from The Speaker at ABC's Inside The Experience:

PS - to those who complain about the commercials, they pay for the show

Most hour shows are 42 minutes long with 18 minutes of commercials. You can either have a 4 or a 5 act show.

A four act show is:
TEASER/com/ACT1/com/ACT2/com/ACT3/com/ACT4/com/CREDITS

A five act show is:
TEASER/com/ACT1/com/ACT2/com/ACT3/com/ACT4/com/ACT5 & CREDITS

Same amount of commercials, just split up differently.

LOST is a 5 act show. Sometimes ABC airs the episodes until 9:01, but that gives you one more minute of commercials than normal.

Apart from that one minute, it is standard.

It's been like that... forever.

Good morning TLC! Sounds like some very disallusioned Lost watchers here.

It does seem like TPTB screwed up with this 6 episode mini-season. It's almost like they've tried to leave so much unanswered in hopes that we'll all be biting at the bit for Feb, but it made the fall mini-series seem disjointed and rushed.

They had to fit in the fact that Eko was leaving (which in MHO was the best ep since they gave "The Cost of Living" the time and developement it deserved.) They had to fit in two new characters (HAD TO?) ... Who else here wishes they had waited til Feb for these two .. as if we need them at all? I think we all wish they had given more time to the characters we have grown attatched to like Sayid, Hurley, etc. Even Desmond didn't get much airtime in the way I would have liked. After all, he's the one who played the biggest role in the finale of last spring .. which brings us to: Where the heck is Penney? Sure seems like we would have seen something about her to tie in with the season 2 finale.

So, Locke and his team of merry followers (as Cam said) are going to try to save K/S/J and decide to try to find a working computer to communicate with the Others and we get a cool glimpse of someone else on the Island in another hatch! What do they do next? Well, they have to bury Eko and lo and behold, the Jesus stick "talks" to John (Lift up your eyes and look north) which I took as meaning go to a high place and look north and they'll see Falcatraz island. Does this mean they're going to forget about Mr. Patchy for now? In fairness, I suppose they don't know what looking north will lead them to.

I would have been happier if there were 2 two-hour premiers to cover at least what the season 2 finale dealt with. I'm not happy with the structure of a fall mini-series followed by the real season starting in Feb. I didn't mind the repeats last year. Maybe I'm in the minority.

Joseph Finchum said...

I have been looking for them. The official release date was supposedly 11-06-02 but none of the stores around me are getting them until the fifteenth. So I am still in waiting mode for the figures. I am planning to get Hurley first, Locke second, Charlie third, and then the hatch set. Jack and kates figures will prolly be put on hold for a while since I don't really like the way their faces came out. Which is surprising from McFarlanes crew of sculptors... They can be really good at what they do. And I will not ever buy the shannon figure, it looks horrible and isn't really that strong a character. If they really wanted her figure to sell they should have made it the scene where she got shot... that I would buy.

Side note: I think the reason that Jake was willing to help Kate and Sawyer after seeing them together is that he eventually did learn to let things go. After his wife left him he became so preoccupied with the other guy that it almost drove him crazy. Then in the one ep. he gets the chance to ask who the guy is from Juliet and doesn't go there, He has changed and is willing to let the other man have his woman as long as he thinks this will make her happy and most of all... Safe.

Hi JGZ350 and Homer,

I must say I am really enjoying Lost at the moment. Being in the UK I download the episodes commercial free which I will continue to do even when we catch up with you guys in February, and I do the same with Prison Break.

I know we haven't seen a lot of Hurley but We've seen a fair amount of Jin and Sun and as for Bernard and Rose they are background character and Vincent is (an and I am a BIG dog lover) really a mobile prop not a full time character.

I have really enjoyed the stuff with Ben, Juliet, Tom and Pickett and Juliet (as you may have gathered from the Podcasts) is one of my favorite characters.

And the action figures, nah, seem to be a waste of £££'s to me (or should that be $$$). Anyway my son's would trash them and my wife would disown me!

Chris Procter said...

Hi Everyone Else -

Note to self - hit F5 before posting!

I must say sometimes I am really glad to be in the UK _ ok so we still have a few hundred (over 300 last time I counted) commercial channels but we do have the Commercial free BBC, so theres at least 4 channels that are 100% commercial free but still backed with a $Billion budget :).

Our commercial channels also have less commercials than in the US (with the exception of SKY). We tend to get 8-9 minutes of commercials per hour as opposed to the US 18 minutes.

Homer -- sorry you're bummed. I agree about the flashbacks. It's time to end them, or give us some cool island flashbacks a la Maternity Leave. Dedjezter - good observation on the Jack growing by letting Kate go instead of stalking her like Sarah. Of course, he knows who the "Other Man" is in Kate's case. But does this mean his growth is complete, and he's next?

Wow, sounds to me like the spring run of 16 episodes better shape up before people stop watching.

If we were to list things needed to fix the show, what would they be?

1. Death to Nikki and Paulo, and stop bringing in pointless characters like them.
2. More screen time for the characters we're attached to. It's not just the Kate Jack and Sawyer show guest starring Locke.
3. Less flashback time, more island time.

lifeobstacle: I think your fixes are dead on so I'm not sure what I could add to that list. At some point we should get more answers that questions... right? Otherwise we won't have all the answers by the end.

As for ratings dropping, the creators have said that we would be better off if the ratings drop. This way the show will have an ending instead of them being forced to stretch the show to 10 seasons. I - for one - want a decent show with an ending and not a 10 year worthless show.

BarbaraJay said...

Maybe it's just me, but I've liked every episode of Lost. If I had to pick one to skip, it would be Everyone Hates Hurley. I find the Others story line less intriguing than the mystical island stuff. And I really dislike the idea of 6 episodes, then 3 months of nothing. I'll be watching Criminal Minds or, if CM has reruns, Ghost Hunters on the SciFi Channel. I'd rather be rewatching Lost episodes but I can still do that online. The structure has nothing to do with the storyline or the fans. ABC just wanted to cram another show in.

April and Eli said...

I think 5 years would be the perfect timeframe for the show to end. I too am worried about it stretching too long.

Also I agree with barbarajay that I've liked every episode, individually. But when I put the past 6 together in my head, I can't believe it's already been 6 episodes considering what we don't know yet. I feel like they could have accomplished this in 2 hours, not 6.

Still a really good story, but I think the upcoming string of episodes will be crucial. If we have to wait until the 15th episode to see Penny again, there's going to be a mutiny.

Dennis said...

BarbaraJay said... Maybe it's just me, but I've liked every episode of Lost.

Me too. I started re-watching season one from the beginning, and they are just as good the second time. There is so much you forget that happened.

I really dislike the idea of 6 episodes, then 3 months of nothing. ... The structure has nothing to do with the storyline or the fans. ABC just wanted to cram another show in.

I think the Lost creators wanted to run them all together 24-style in the spring, but ABC wouldn't have it. They demanded something to show in the fall, so that where the 6 episode mini-season came about. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 13 weeks. I was expecting the "Lost Video Diaries" Mobisodes to fill the void, but no word on that so far.

There was a lot of complaining about the re-runs last two seasons, so they tried something different. Maybe they will try the 24-in-a-row for Season 4, but that will mean a 6-month hiatus between seasons. Too bad it's not The Truman Show, and we can't watch it 24/hours a day :)

Capcom said...

Hi All, wow, some serious discussions here today on the pertinence of the show this season. And I have to agree. I enjoyed these few episodes in a stand-alone sense, but altogether, considering where we are in the story and what we really need to know now, it comes up short IMNSHO.

Technically (no matter what they call it) this is season 3 after the summer break. Lost isn't the first show to take a mid-season break for the winter holidays with no reruns. It's been done before (and it killed some of the shows that did it), but without the hype about it. Big deal, a mini season. I agree, it is definitely time for the TPTB to start putting some meat into the story here. I know that it's just a TV show. But if this were a book that I was reading, and after reading one third or half of the book nothing was being resolved or happening with the main characters besides flashbacks, I probably would have closed the book shut and thrown it away by now.

During and after season 2 I felt very patient with TPTB to eventually start answering some Qs, but at this point, for the sake of good writing and KEEPING your audience INTERESTED, a writer needs to insert some substantial story for the observer to invest their immagination and emotions in, and TPTB are not doing this in my opinion. At this time, if someone asked me what Lost was about (and they often do) all I could still really say, was that it's about some people who crashed on an island, where weird things happen. "The End", as Desmond says.

Is the fact that J.J. is not involved with the show anymore the reason why the storyline seems to be floating along in limbo now? Really, WHY did we need to know this about Kate NOW? Weren't we supposed to learn more about the Others in this mini season? So K and S make love in the cage, big deal. I would have much more preferred even an Other flashback. And so help me if we get a Nikki or Whatshisname flashback somewhere in the rest of this season, I will probabluy blow a blood vessel! And really, why do we need new people when we don't even get storytime or action from the characters that we already know and love, as is said here today??????? Sheesh. And I agree, Michael and Walt were very interesting and important characters, could not we get just a glimpse of what they are going through? A storm? A shot of Mike and Walt with their mouths gaping open as they look up into a swirling portal? Or even just them drinking their last drop of water and collapsing? Puh.

I dunno, I guess that I'd better stop thinking about it. I acknowledge that we did get to see a lot of Otherville and Otherstation, but it was so disjointed that I don't really know what all we've gained storywise, it just doesn't seem like that much to me. OK, sorry for that, I guess that I woke up on the wrong side of the island hammock today. :-( I'd better go talk to Hurley and cheer up, cuz right about now I fell like unleashing Old Smokey on TPTB for some whomping.

Capcom said...

Wow, I just got some serious TLE deja-vu.......here we all are, talking about how great Lost started out and trying to figure out the answers to the questions......and then just when it should start coming to a crescendo of sorts, it fizzles out like a stretched out balloon with a hole it in...pfffffft. Please Lord, don't let TPTB do to the show what was done to TLE. Otherwise, if it weren't for you all, I'd jump ship now.

BTW, I have just officially in my head (unless TPTB prove to me otherwise somehow) put Nikki and Stupid in the category of Jumping the Dharma Shark. There, I said it. Oh well. If I am proven wrong at a later date, remind me to take it back and say that I was wrong. :-)

As for LOST and TLE, I have to say I'm disappointed that the 2 have not come together in any way at all through this mini-season. In fact, it seems like the writers have gotten over "the numbers" at this point. Some of them have certainly shown up, but it's not as much fun finding them anymore.

I also hate that Damon has said that it was Gary Troup that got sucked into the engine. To me that's a real disservice to those of us who saw one actor playing Troup in TLE and a clearly different one getting sucked into the engine.

I found an awesome Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse interview on TVGuide.com

Warning: it is very spoilery!!! but if you don't mind spoilers, it will answer a lot of the things some people are complaining about... but PLEASE DO NOT DISCUSS THEM HERE

One of the non-spoilery questions is about Nikki & Paolo:

Q. One frustration I'm hearing is that viewers don't understand why you would bring in new characters like Paolo (Rodrigo Santoro) and Nikki (Kiele Sanchez) when it seems like you're already having trouble servicing the original characters.

Damon: That's a legitimate concern, and I wouldn't say that we have difficulty servicing the initial cast. I do think that we acknowledge that the franchise of Lost — if there was one since we don't have bodies on gurneys or clients coming into law firms — is the introduction of new characters. We basically get two criticisms: One is that we're not with our main people enough, and the other is [that people are] sick and tired of seeing redundant flashback stories. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. And another criticism we've been getting since the very beginning of the show is, "How come we never hear from, or incorporate into the story, the other passengers, the ones who are sort of carrying logs around in the background?" Obviously we knew it'd be tricky starting to fold Rodrigo and Kiele into the show as if they'd been there all along. But it was an effort on our part to sort of deal with two out of those three criticisms. Although the inevitable, “Why aren't we spending more time with Claire instead of spending time with people we don't know yet?" was going to come up. We suffer the slings and arrows of criticisms at almost every creative turn, and again, it's all in the service of the uber-story that is Lost.
