Okay guys, I worked hard on this all day. Tried to incorporate all opinions and positions. Tried to be as detailed and thorough as possible without going psycho. I gotta head out now but will check in again later tonight. Hope everyone is cool with the "definitions" and "standards" we've laid out. Hope it helps us feel free to stop having this discussion and to focus on the FUN STUFF!

Two questions about the spoiler guidelines:
1. Why are there question marks after guidelines 4 and 5?
2. Based on the comments at the end of the previous post, I am wondering: Should we or should we not post comments that inform others when new info is available at a spoiler site (like EW.com)? Obviously, we shouldn't discuss anything from a spoiler site, but what about mentioning that something new is out there? Is that OK or not good?

2. I think commenters should feel free to say something like this, "Hey, new spoiler info posted at spoilerfix.com. If you like spoilers, check it out but REMEMBER NOT TO DISCUSS IT IN THIS FORUM." I think you have to SHOUT the last part in all caps. Also, IMHO, if someone advertises spoiler info here, they should take personal responsibility for making sure nobody brings that up on the blog.

I don't think that we have ever had problems with referencing sites with future episode or spoiler info, those are fun if one likes to see them. I do sometimes.
But some posters forget the spoiler guidelines and think that just because a site is mentioned, that the information is open for free discussion before the ep has aired, just so that they can be the first to post the info. Not kosher. :-)
That is the main spoiler problem that we've had this season.

So, without getting all spoilery, what does everyone expect to see in a few hours?
I hope we find out what the Others want with Jack, and I don't think they just want his doctor skills. I really believe they want him to be part of their group for the long run.
Hi everyone! Just got home and decided to see how everyone is. Man, only 2 hours left for me, can't wait!
One thing im going to have to be careful about is that im in Canada so when I watch it, I get the canadian promo so it's going to be a little hard to remember that not everyone has seen it.
I think the Others will want Jack for his surgical skills, but I still can't guess why they would want Sawyer. I really don't think they need a con man. As Ben said, the Others view themselves as superior at conning. Maybe there is something in Sawyer's blood that they need? And he needs to be able to donate it willingly? Hmmm. I'm not sure that even makes sense now that I type it.
LifeObstacle- i think Mr.Eyepatch is Radzinsky it could be a past video not a live feed.
With Jack i think they just brought him there to help Benry with his tumor.
And dam hmm is the survivor death a spoiler well if it is REALLY SRY but i think Eko (since it is his flashback) or Sayid i dont kno y for sayid i just have a feeling

For everyone with bad spelling (myself included!)...
The newest version of FireFox 2.0, has built-in spell check. It automatically underlines misspelled words as you are typing your comments. You can right-click the misspelled words, and it will correct them for you.
If you don't already use Firefox (instead of Internet Explorer), you should check it out. It is more secure than IE, has less pop-ups, and more features (and doesn't break the front page :)

Thanks sunbruise. I'm so used to Explorer and never heard of firefox until about a month ago. I'm always kind of leary to download programs on my computer that I know nothing about. I will have to look into it -- it sounds like something I would check into.

The front page looks fine now.
I almost didn't. By day three, I started getting cold sweats. Day seven, dizzy spells. And by day 12, I was having hallucinations of myself and Locke in a tent, eating a wierd silvery paste. Wierd stuff.
Dennis/Sunpatch, they would do that too. We've been spending days talking about it, so of course it's going to be right before the credits role. Darn them!

Dennis is right. The issue isn't following the "letter of the law" but understanding and respecting the "spirit of the law". The idea is that you don't want to give away any sort of spoiler information in this forum. While you didn't share any specific information, your reaction to what you know may communicate more than you think. The more you freak out about who's going to die, the more we narrow down the list of people in our minds and the less fun we have watching the episode. Hope you understand.

I believed that many things, such as mauled by bear Eko talking to Locke, were caused by the smoke or the monster. I've noticed that when Eko collapsed, the smoke escaped through his mouth and nose, as if until then, it had carried him to that spot. Also, when the huge smoke was gaining on him after he drank the water, I think it disappeared becasue Locke and the others were coming, not because Eko looked back.
i guess it can morph into people, its not inconcievable that it could pick things up.

Ok, so after watching this episode, I'm thinking the "smoke monster"/"security system"/whatever-you-want-to-call-it is working for/part of an as-yet-unseen group on this island, most likely made up of current/former DHARMA folks. This as-yet-unseen group, I belive, includes whoever left the cigarette burning the first time Locke and Ecko went to The Pearl in season2 and eyepatch guy who we've seen now.
Ecko told Locke the monster told him the rest of the Losties are next, but it had more or less left them alone for most of last season. Perhaps now that they've discovered Mr. Eyepatch the security system has been stepped up and turned to attack mode. Not quite sure what this all means. Thoughts?

I think that the smoke can't turn into humans. It can turn into other things such as the horse or the boar, but it can only possess humans, dead or alive.

I think they want him to feel comfotable with her,familiar that's why they chose her. They thought he would start to trust her because she'd start to remind him of his ex wife.

Radzinsky is the community favorite guess for the eye-patch man. But, as has been said already, we don't know for sure.
If he looks familiar, perhaps it's because (to me) he looked like Ron Perlman, of Hellboy and the Alien movies.

Think about it, cam. It doesn't require much education to know that gas can spread. It can be concentrated into a small space or thinned out into a larger one. That's probably how it works. But then again, maybe the omnster just resides outside of normal physics and logic.

Reminder: the old episode threads can provide useful information. Bear in mind that Locke did not find the glass eye. The Tailies found that in the Arrow Station. The producers have said that the monster is NOT a nano-bot entity. They don't lie like that, so I think we can take that as gospel.

cam, i'm also interested in how many others would be willing to rise up against ben; it seems like juliette is fairly well liked, from the attendance at her book club in ep 1 and in that she was able to bring in jack to help colleen w/o telling ben last episode;
at the same time, though, if a majority of the others were against ben's rule, why not just rise up against him by traditional means, or just wait for him to die or become incapacitated from the cancer... something tells me this is more scheming on juliette's part

I don't know that they're the same guy, necessarily, but I believe they're definitely connected somehow; As I said earlier, I think they're the ones who are controling Mr. Smokey, thought i'm not sure to what ends.
and btw, where could cigarette man have gone when we first visited the pearl? it didn't seem that big, so there must be some sort of hidden passages somewhere? and how/why didn't the losties notice the still-burning cig (or did they?)

o i found out somthin about a black/white connection Locke saw a WHITE light and Eko saw the BLACK smoke monster.also
After Eko's death, the only surviving member of the Tailies is Bernard, excluding those who went missing and are presumed to be captured by the Others or dead.
Eko is only the second person to be officially killed by the monster. The first being the pilot.
From LOSTpedia, the producers (see, kenshinfan?) have stated that the cigarette found by Locke and Eko in The Pearl Station was still burning when they arrived. Perhaps Ol' One Eye isn't in The Pearl when they see him on the monitor, but rather just that he's not far away. Considering that the eye was found in The Arrow, and there's one hypothetical hatch between The Pearl and The Arrow, perhaps he's in that one.
Re: black smoke/white light...If Locke saw white light, then what Eko saw were the people he felt responsible for killing (which is why his response to Locke is "that is not what I saw"). Everyone sees the black smoke.
kenshinfan - There is an overall story arc already in place for the show. When the producers have given us something in the past, it's because they want us to know it. I don't think they've "leaked" anything that wasn't already bound to happen. But it's your prerogative.

maybe when razinsky was making this map he didnt want anyone to belive the hatches were connected
at the start of "The Cost of Living" (after the flashback in the teaser) a shot of Mr Eko' CLOSED EYE was shown, as opposed to the open eye shots used in several episodes. his closed eye could have been the sighn of DEATH

Ok, so we think eyepatch guy and cigaretter are connected, and they are not connected to the Benry others.
And also I've been feeling that there is something not...quite... human about the Benry others.
And we know there are two groups of others...
And there was that Wiz o' Oz reference last season...
So maybe the Benry others are like the "great and powerful Oz" - an apparition designed to generate awe and fear. And eyepatch represents a group that is like the man behind the curtain, pushing all the buttons.

Good evening all-
So many things to discuss regarding this episode, The Cost of Living, even the title is a bit forshadowing. I believe we have seen the flame and obiviously Mr. Patch is running the show there, btw, that's pure speculation on my part. Mr. Smokey can morph into a person now and talk, wow and it's extremely strong. Mr. Smokey was tossing Mr. Eko about rag doll style. I am so sad to see Mr. Eko cash in. Now I see why all the actors are like dying to read the next script to see if they buy it. I think nobody is safe on this crazy island, but that's what makes Lost so intense is that you never now who is going to cash in or what is going to happen.
Also, best line of the night goes to Locke, when he told Desmond - "Don't confuse coincidence with Fate" or something similiar to that. Remember that's what Mr. Eko told Locke when he was piecing the swan orientation film together in the swan.
That was a great episode and by far the best to date.
I'll see you in another life Mr. Eko. Too bad to see such a great character gone.
I'll miss Eko. He was such an intense character and yet so human.
Yes definatly the best lost to date..........hands down.......
Here's a thought for anyone still around - was Eko redeemed? Everyone else was. But he didn't go in for the confession. So...?
And that scene in the beginning as kids, when he was so afraid to go into confession. Why? Pure pride?

I'm still around, but mostly lurking as things have stepped up considerably at my job + I'm preparing to move from Chicago to Portland, OR in December. Also, there's just so much *less* to talk about compared to TLE, or at least, what there *is* happens in one big burst each week, as opposed to the multiple instances we dealt with in the game.
Additionally, I feel very (ahem) lost so far this season. Things seem to point to the Others being either non-DHARMA or a mix of non-DHARMA and DHARMA folk, yet we've had nothing that strongly indicates either. And with Pirate Dude tonight, there's just **way** too much to speculate about and very **little** to help direct that speculation. I think I'll feel more motivated after I get to watch the mysterious mini-season as a whole, and even more so once we get what's supposed to be coming in the second half of the season. ;) It should be pretty clear by now that my primary interest is in the backstory and not the sordid little lives of the Losties. Come on, February!
I don't know, I still don't trust Juliet. What if Ben doesn't even have a tumor. Maybe Juliet faked the x-rays and it's all part of her evil plot to get rid of Ben and take over.
