I DO - SEASON 3, EPISODE 6

It's never a good sign for the survivors when it starts raining, is it? Tonight, Jack makes a decision regarding Ben's offer, Kate feels helpless when it looks like an angry Pickett is going to make good on his threat to kill Sawyer, and Locke discovers a hidden message that may guide him through the next steps of his journey to unlocking the secrets of the island.

here are a few more non-spoilery things from the interview:

One other complaint I'm hearing this season is that new mysteries are being presented before old ones are solved. Can you say anything about that?

Carlton: We're always in this sort of balancing act. [We want] to keep the audience engaged by the underlying mysteries of the show, but we also want to try to answer questions and give people some satisfaction. And I think maybe the pendulum has swung a little too much into the “Well, we need more answers” category, and we try to be attentive to that.
...
Damon: And here's the thing: At the end of season 2, we downloaded a hell of a lot of mythology in those last couple episodes. We explained why the plane crashed and whether or not the button was the real deal. But at the same time, every time we close one door we have to open up another or else we risk falling victim to the Twin Peaks curse, which is that once they told you who killed Laura Palmer, there was no reason to watch the show anymore.
...
Damon: Look, here's the thing, Michael. We believe audiences aren't really asking, “When are we going to get our answers?” They're asking, "Are we going to get our answers?" And that's a very savvy question for them to be asking, because of the nature of the television business, it's sort of like, "Are they just stringing us along?" And all Carlton and I can say is that we are absolutely committed to giving you those answers. We know what the answers are, and we're telling them in the most creatively satisfying way for us as storytellers.

Is there going to be a sort of "challah"-type thing at the end of tonight's episode [I Do]?

Carlton: No.
Damon: It's not a game-changer.
Carlton: But there's a good cliff-hanger.
Damon: It's a much more conventional cliff-hanger in the vein of Jack Bauer going on a slow boat to China.
Carlton: We believe it's a cliff-hanger that will make the audience want to come back and watch the show when it picks up in February.
Damon: It will hopefully be good enough to incur major frustration from the audience as to "How dare we go off the air for 13 weeks and leave them hanging in that fashion!"
Carlton: The angrier we make them the better the cliff-hanger is, I guess.

Thanks dennis. That interview reinvigorated me. It has the kinds of spoilers I like, that don't give away too much and make you want to see the next few episodes.

They seem to think the big cliffhanger is what made people mad. I think we're more upset about the lack of answers in the past 6 weeks. (Actually 6 weeks with few answers wouldn't bother me if there wasn't a break right afterwards.)

Hey JGZ, I'm into a theory like that! If N and P were Others, would they be Hydra Others or the other-Others that we haven't met yet? For instance, because of what Nikki said in the Pearl, which made the guys turn on the other TVs, we could assume that she (as an other-Other) wanted them to see Mr. Patchy or vice-versa. Or maybe she's a regular Other, but in the vein of Alex, and wants to take the Others down in some way. Perhaps N and P tried to escape with Alex and Carl? And only N and P made it?

While I'm in that thought, is Alex supposed to have snuck back onto Falcatraz (possibly from Othertown?) when the barracks breach (or whatever Radar O'Reily in the speaker called it) occured? IF so, how is it that she keeps getting loose and they have to keep catching her I wonder?

Thanks Dennis for the TV Guide article, I'll go read it now. I do have a problem with what they said about the flashbacks vs. new characters. Why does less flashbacks mean they have to bring in new characters? Why can't they just expound on the experiences of the characters that we know and rarely get to see? And why can't they write enough storyline so that we wouldn't still be living (on the island) back in 2004? And I think that they missed the point of the Twin Peaks problem. It wasn't that you knew who killed Laura......no answers were given as to the all other people's mysteries laid out (cotton balls!), it got too freaky-deaky, and no one cared about David Lynch's nightmares anymore. :-)

Wish that I had a Hurley doggie to talk to, my kitty just died a while ago. I guess I'll go talk to my little Curious George plushy. :-)

Love the theory of the newbies being Others. I'm beginning to think the theories may be better than the actual story.

btw, I might have to get me a Hurley action figure:)

I think the biggest problem with the past episode was that it was over-hyped. 'I Do' would have served fine as a typical mid-season episode, but all this business about it supposedly being one of the best episodes ever, that was silly.

Also, just the fact that it was a "season finale" (well, a fall finale anyway) had us expecting that we would get some major plotline revelations and/or major cliffhangers. But that didn't happen.

If there were an episode next week, and if ABC hadn't over-hyped the show, there probably wouldn't be as many hard feelings right now.
I'm gonna hang in there. I think some good things will be coming next year.

blueheron13 said...

Not to say that the episode didn't have some problems. For me the biggest were:

1. The flashback sequence didn't seem that believable to me. I can't picture Kate's character ever even trying to settle down and play housewife. Also, I find it hard to believe she would marry a cop in the first place! Finally, there was no chemistry between Kevin and Kate, IMHO.

2. The flashback sequence didn't really shed any new light on Kate's character. We already knew she's "born to run." We already knew she was married for a brief time. And we already knew she had taken a pregnancy test at some point. Actually seeing these things happen in the flashback didn't add too much.

3. The cage sex scene. It was there for ratings. It didn't make much sense to me in the context of the story at that moment.

4. The lack of scenes with Locke and the merry band. We were probably all hoping that the merry band would we well on their way toward finding either J/S/K or Mr. Patchy. And instead all they found were the verses on the stick, which we've known about and discussed for a while now.

These complaints aside, I still think it was a decent episode. Just not good enough to qualify as a decent (mini) season-ending episode.

April and Eli said...

Just wondering, how are TLC podcasts working over the break?

Capcom said...

I'm sorry about your doggie, Codysmom. :-( I should change my name to Jellybeansmom.

You know Blueheron you're right about that. I think that if it wasn't for the big buildup, I wouldn't have become so flamey today. Once the afterglow of the episode wore off, it just didn't live up to the bragging, as you mentioned. I did like the eps on their own, like I said. But as far as being something to tide me over until....what is it, NEXT YEAR, nuh-uh, I felt gypped. Oh well, there I go getting flamey again, sorry. I just don't want TPTB to blow it, lose ratings, and then Lost is cancelled and we get no "closure" on anything. I think that's my true fear, it's not that they owe us anything weekly, I just don't want it to get axed on us. It's too much fun!

I will say again though, to give TPTB props, the Super-Jack-Attack on the Others was very satisfying indeed!

Lifecycle,

Steve and I are actually trying to figure that out! I know that we'll have our regualr monday episode oout obviously monday, and we have plans for an episode for next monday, after that it's really dependant on how much content we get from Listeners, the site, and the producers. We're looking to also do a fun Christmas episode where the TLC can leave Christmas/Hoilday greetings to the rest of the group and as we get closer to the Feb we would like to do a Total Spoiler Episode that we'll only make available via a link in the message board.

I'd also like David (the Admin) to do an episode on the State of The Lost Community. But we're still trying to nail down a good time to do that?

As for the rest of the weeks, If there's content we'll talk about it. Maybe we'll do a Other Podcast Review Episode, or I don't know the sky's the limit as long as everybody at TLC.com gets involved. So call 206-600-0952 or send Email's to Passafistwastaken@gmail.com, visit myspace.com/davidadein, and keep posting here at the TLC.com.

Happy Veteran's Day everyone!

I for one am breathing a sigh of relief for this 13 week hiatus. After a long summer of TLE which lead into 6 episodes that really made one continue to theorize and speculate, I feel so talked out! I am looking forward to this "vacation"! I plan on still checking in here and see what's going on (and probably add my 2 cents...hard to wean oneself off this) for the next 13 weeks.

I'm actually enjoying "Heroes" and watching it just as pure entertainment. I'm not trying to analyze every little thing and try to figure out the meaning of the symbol or who Sylar is or what HRG's agenda is. I'm not reading their message board! I'm just watching each episode and waiting until next week to see what happens next. No thinking involved! LOL

Lot of blowhards on this thread acting like they know how to make good TV. I'd like to see any one of you folks make compelling television entertainment last for 10 minutes, let alone 3 seasons. I know that appending 'in my opinion' to the end of everything is redundant, or it should be amongst educated individuals, but some people seem to forget it, and then they really need to say it to remind themselves that no, what they have to say is not 'the way it is', it's just their own opinion, and guess what - they aren't TV execs/whatever specific expert.

I expect most of us have had to put up with people who find enjoyment in breaking into discussions about a thing - TV shows or not, might be something completely different like how best to build that flatpack corner unit - simply to naysay and talk up how they know the right way to do it. Ultimately, there's 2 sane things to do if you don't like it - shut up and settle down, or go away. I kinda come here to avoid that, so it's a little disheartening to see that sort of attitude come here as well.

I was disappointed by the scope of the cliffhanger as well, but I'm not going to surround and inflate that OPINION with self important predictions of their losing my viewership, bluster, or 'jumping the shark' which, by the way, is the most overused phrase around and entirely unfunny. The Penny Arcade comic makes exactly that point, hence the brown-suited scampi-in-a-basket circuit comedian. People say it when what they mean is 'I am bored'. It's a license to egotism - inflation of opinion.

To move on: The reason I was vaguely disappointed is that I had been led to believe there was something earth-shattering in store, and instead it was decidedly mundane. By which I mean, it was un-Losty. When I think 'big Lost cliffhanger' I'm thinking about massive twists and revealed secrets on an island where nothing is straight and open. Instead we got love scenes and surgery we've expected for weeks. It would have been a great episode if it was business as usual, but perhaps not as a cliffhanger.

Fortunately, I can see that it's just setting up big changes as of February. Nothing can stay the same now. The episode was just bad at communicating that, especially in light of a three month gap. Frankly I don't know what could compensate for a three month gap except a big reveal that there isn't really going to be a wait at all, they were just joshing and it continues next week. Or maybe making your TV eject strawberry laces out of the headphone jack while we wait.

Capcom said...

Good day fellow blowhards! :-D

Gee Redhex, why don't you come down off the fence and say what you really mean? :-D Were you kidding?

But seriously folks, no one here is inflated with self-importance. We may be blowhards, but on the front page of the blog, the Admins call this a place for watercooler discussions, and when you have that, you are going get "armchair quarterbacks" so to speak, whether you like it or not. So we're just doing what the Admins said that we could do. In fact, it's what we've been doing since day one of TLE/TLC. And it should come as no surprise that we're still having fun b*tching and moaning at this point. :-) There's also that famous saying, "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like." Which is all we're really saying here......what we like and don't like. No biggie.

As for giving our opinion on how to run a TV show, of course we all know that "those who cannot do, teach." :-D But gee, aren't your last two paragraphs about your opinion? That's why I figure that you must be joking, right? And this blog is blog-home to some very talented people who probably could make a decent TV show if they had the chance. Between Inenglandlost's videos, Passafist and the podcasters, Dark Angel's writing (not to mention all our comedians and comediennes) and other artists here, it would not be that far of a stretch to imagine them all making a go of an intersting show!

IB4UC, welllll, that is true about the manifest. But can we ignore that one little detail?? :-)

FosterMom said...

Capcom: Exactly. I totally agree. I've been lurking for a long time and thoroughly enjoy the spirit of this blog. I come here because people can say what's on their minds, good or bad, without being flamed.

I too was disappointed in the fall season finale only because it's supposed to hold us over till February. I liked the episode on its own. However, the more I think of it, the more I realize that if TPTB had given us some answers, we may have not had lots to speculate on and discuss over the break. And I for one can say that there are many incredibly talented people on this blog and the wild theories that are presented here keep me coming back for more on a daily sometimes hourly basis.

I'm not going to mention any names as I don't want to leave anyone out, but if a bunch of you got together and wrote some Lost episodes, I think we would all be amazed at the plot twists and turns that would be created. I bow to the talent here at TLC!

Just one lurker's humble opinion :-)

I think the fact that ben asked for alex shows that ben is the good one and julliette is the bad one. Does anyone have any idea who Jacob is??? pickett said "whatever jacks last name is, wasnt even on Jacob's list". So it seems jacob is the true leader and arbiter of who is good and bad...

if abc really cared about beating criminal minds they wouldnt put the whole episode on abc .com right after it airs. It jus t depends how much revenue come from non-commerial means. They are making money everytime someone downloads it from i-tunes. I think conventional ratings dont apply like they used to. Criminal minds is not a show that people really download or whatever so it needs its rating upfront. Hbo doesnt get blockbuster rating for any one show cause they play the new ones all week. Its just a way to bring people to the table, If lost makes tons of money on dvd sales and such i dont think being a rating juggernaut is needed to keep it on the air.

9. You refer to your in-laws as "The Others"

8. While visiting New York, you stood over every manhole and screamed, "Good God -- a secret hatch"

7. You're halfway to your goal of licking every cast member

6. Your friend phoned during "Lost." Next day you beat him to death with a hot poker

5. You pitched NBC a show about 12 people stranded backstage at "Saturday Night Live"

4. Co-workers affectionately refer to you as "That loser who's obsessed with 'Lost'"

3. Renamed dental practice "Flost"

2. Your wife is getting sick of playing the bedroom game "Find the castaway"

1. You sat through all ten of these lame jokes

Maven: I'm looking forward to a break too. I still have two Lost episodes to watch and am in no hurry to finish them up. It'll just be like a "summer break" but at a much more logical time as I'm getting all busy for the holidays already.

I caught a piece of Heroes the other night and was impressed. Someone else here said they liked it too. Can anybody give me a run down of the show or direct me to a place that has one? Thanks!

BTW, based solely on comments here, not on seeing this episode, I agree with Jacob being Mr. Patchy, Nikki and Paolo being Losties, and Ben raising Alex. I also think the "list" referred to is likely the list that they gave Micheal of people to bring back. The pregnancy test flashback might be that they're trying to get us to think Kate might get pregnant with Sawyer's baby. (Also relates to Sawyer's flashback about having a child.) And LostinFrogurt's formula is terrific!

So "jumping the shark" doesn't refer to the Dharma shark? I thought there was a connection. So out of the loop...

Twinkle said...

Dennis: Thanks for that Ausellio link. Very heartening!

Anonymous said...

Jumping the shark. The latest dumb catchphrase people have caught like a disease to spit out when they feel critical. It comes from an episode of Happy Days where the Fonz waterski'd over a shark. It's supposed to mean the point at which anything (usually TV but anything really) goes from being good to being pitiful. Except first, it doesn't exist because these things are a slow decline rather than a one-episode turnaround; second, we aren't clones so what's good for one is middling to another and bad to someone else; and third, it only works in hindsight. You don't sit there and call it in realtime like you're actually embarrassed about what you're watching, tentatively waiting, hoping for an excuse to jump all over it. Years later you reflect and say 'it wasn't the same after this'.

But whatever. There's a class of person out there who delights in making proclamations like that.

Capcom said...

No Twinkle, you aren't mixed up, we were just updating the corny shark jumping phrase to a Dharma shark thing, because of the shark with the DI logo and all. Just having a little fun. Not trying to annoy anyone. Just using a cliche for what it is....a cliche....between friends....Redhex. :-) I guess if our sophomoric humor doesn't thrill someone, they can....um....not read it. But we still don't want to chase anyone away, that would make the Admins sad.

2costa, I could go for that theory that Ben is a nicer (more good) "bad guy" than Juliet. She is really beginning to annoy me now. OK, so she's all sad and sorry that she joined the DI, and she wants to go "Downtown" really bad. But her other behavior to Jack, her sickeningly sweet suckup voice, and lying to Ben on the table like that, etc., creeps me out. Not that Ben isn't still creepy, mind you.

As for ratings, do they still give out those ratings boxes that you hook up to your TV, or did those go out in the 60s? If not, where can we sign up to get some and raise the Lost ratings?!

Thanks SO much Dennis for posting that top 10 Lost list, that's great.

I spent some time today looking at the lost-media.com "I Do" screen caps. Here are my observations.
1. Jack continues to fool around with the ceiling. Is there a way out?
2. During her slingshot attack, Alex carried a bag with "US 151" or "US 451" printed on it. More military surplus or something else?
3. One of Ben's observation cameras were on the scrub room outside of the operating room.
4. The operating room was "OP-06." Does this mean there are OP 1 through 5?
5. Kate's wedding necklace had a swivel pendant. I couldn't get a good look at the design.
6. I'm very curious about the Falcatraz Island jungle clearing project that Kate and Sawyer worked on. Two of the screen caps showed pieces of the plans on the table but I'm not savvy enough to get a better look. Anybody?

Nothing outstanding. I'll keep looking at all of the S3 epi screen caps.

Hi, Dr. Spongebob! I was going to watch Criminal Minds but it looks like Medium is going to be in the Wednesday at 9 slot. Decisions, decisions.

Hey TBM, long time no hear! You didn't put your two cents in for this Ep yet did you? Hey, maybe a good thing for LoCo peeps to do during the break is read the essays on your blog. I'll be doing some of that. I read a few so far but have a lot more to peruse. I have to go to Dr. Spongey's blog too, I haven't been there in a while.

All this talk about "The Break" makes me think of that silly Ross and Rachel thing, "But we were on a break!" :-) I guess if the "exciting Lost sneak peaks" during Day Break are good enough, we can talk about those. Maybe the Admins can start a thread where we can talk about them, since we've just about exhausted discussion on this ep, unless someone comes up with a good new question or theory that we haven't tried yet. But tomorrow we should get one more TLC podcast? Blow our socks off with this one guys, it needs to last us till Feb. I hope that TLC traffic doesn't fizzle out completely during The Break. I luv you guys, man! :-D

BTW! I just got the new Lost magazine and on page 27 in Desmond's bio, it says that he was dishonorably discharged for "refusing to follow orders". Did we know that? Or did I miss that? I thought that the only thing we knew, was that he did something that was hinted at being cowardly, which of course spurred him to do the race to get his honor back. Perhaps he refused a chance to kill one of the enemy (out of mercy? -- Des is such a nice guy it seems), and he was put in the brig for that? Interesting, I thought that we had no clue as to what he did. The mag also shows the making of the 4-toed foot.

Thanks for the heads-up about the screen caps Barbarajay. Yes, what is the rock-breaking project all about?! Maybe it was supposed to be for Danny and Colleen's newlywed lovenest? :-)

Not sure if you meant "isn't" or not, but that is a horribly negative article that doesn't really have anything constructive to say. Except that "this is how they should have done it," which isn't worth much.

And, I guess, no-one told the author that Lost IS a limited run series, just not on his schedule.

Back after the weekend. I know everyone is wondering what to do in the 13 weeks break and I know Christmas is going to keep you all busy but what about Lost.

Well fear not, I know David and 'The Goog' are planning a few podcasts and you can guarantee my involvement :).

I am also planning a few things to keep you involved. I have something I'm thinking about doing nearer Christmas but in best Lost tradition I am going to keep that under wraps for the time being. However I am working on a Lost based short story, which I will publish exclusively here in the not too distant future.

Thought about it and still think that Lost was horribly boring and unclever with their little mini season.

And as for all of us haters who shouldn't talk because "what do we know about making television"?

That's not the point.

Intelligent people, regardless of what job they do, can discuss what makes good televison or not. (Or good music or a good book) You don't have to be a rocket scientist to make television. But anyone with any assemblence of a brain who can communicate ideas can certainly discuss what makes bad TV.

If people really believe that those who don't make television shouldn't be allowed to criticize it, then I guess we should just let them make whatever they want and we just sit and take it.

No! Voice your damn opinion and speak out why you don't like something. In fact, when Lost was good (there was a time), the reason the show actually beat the odds of cancellation after one episode was because it resonated with an audience and people responded to how great it was. People talked. There was buzz. So why can't the same fans who love the show also talk about its shortcomings. We aren't fairweather fans. We stick around and hope it gets better. But we certainly won't just sit down and take what they give without speaking our mind about it. And I can bet that with the bad buzz that translated into dwindling viewers (yes, I know it's not THAT many, I can read the ratings), that they will once again listen to what the fans are saying.

No one here wants Lost to be bad. No one here is a true hater. What they want is the show they love to be fantastic. It's a tall order, but not impossible.
