THE GLASS BALLERINA - SEASON 3, EPISODE 2

"A daring rescue or a deadly trap. The real adventure is just beginning." (From last week's promo for The Glass Ballerina). Everyone's on edge, waiting to see what will happen next as the Survivors clash with the Others. We were overwhelmed at the response of our commenters last week and can't wait to continue to foster a sense of community throughout the season. You guys rock!

In response to the spoken need for a place to discuss spoilers so that they can be kept out of the comments threads, lostgrrl has started THIS THREAD in the Message Board dedicated to a week by week discussion of upcoming spoilers. If anyone wishes to talk about spoiler info, you can kindly direct them to the Message Board. Hope this helps!

Hmmmm...cam, that might be a little spoilery. You may want to consider taking that post over to the spoiler message board. A lot of folks over here want to stay "untainted".

Haven't had time to post in a
while so, Ok here goes nothing.

1)I do not believe the Hydra hatch is under water but merely near the water or may have a floodable tube tunnle type thing that leads to the water, possibly near the dock which is how the others were able to get to the boat without being seen or going near the beach/dock runway area. This is also why at the end of the second season that is where they brought them all. because that is where the entrance to the tunnel is.
2)Jin is no longer infertile. Why you ask? Because Morning sickness come on at about 5-6 weeks into pregnancy and they have been there 8 - 9 weeks so far.
3)If Colleen isn't dead I will be pissed to no end. Every one else on this show who got a gut shot is dead so why should she live. The only one that didn't die instantly was Libby and that was with a doctor on hand.
4)Why can't any one on this show point a gun higher than three feet high????? Except for Danielle who has a crossbow and knows how to shoot.
5)Admin - I agree that the Others are scared. They are not in a perfect society and have the same trust issues that the Lostaways have (i.e. the Colleen/Juliet/Henjamin talk in the hatch), they have just been there longer and have had more time to figure out what their own people are like.
6)Sun had no idea that Jin was being sent to kill Jae (creepier than it is for most of you as that is my name as well - Jae) SHe knew he was being sent somewhere and may have suspected it was to Jae, but the talk with her father where he said he didn't tell Jin makes her doubt that. Also on this note. He did not jump and is Korean, not Japanese as someone had said. Koreans are known for taking off their shoes before jumping and he had his on. So I do not think he jumped. I think He went to get the necklace and was going to the window which overlooked the front of the hotel and was going to throw it down at Jin when he walked out of the front doors, but was surprised by the second killer (the one from the first Ep. where Jin had to do this kind of thing) And this is the guy who threw Jae off the Balcony, which is why Mr. Paik seemed like he knew more than he was saying.
7)They didn't know they had a boat. They may have known that Kelvin was there, but not that Desmond got shipwrecked there also. Kelvin rescued Des and stashed the boat where he knew it would be safe. They want the Sailboat because... DUH... it is a sail boat. They gave away the other boat to Mike/Walt because what good is a boat that can't go to far. A sail boat can go indefinitely as long as there is wind and that is why they want it so bad.
8) Dennis - My thoughts exactly.
9) Ahoymatees - I was thinking the same thing about Juliet. The Carrie ref is a good one because if you know about Carrie Then you know that the main character (Carrie) is a misunderstood, loner, kind of rejected by her peers type just like Juliet and that she seems to be a step ahead is further symmetry to that story of Carrie.

Whew, glad to get that all out. See you around peeps.

2sweet2bsour yea i agree those marks cant be just from that. Annnnnd didnt Kate just eat??!! Wen Sawyer tossed Kate the Fish Buiscuit she ate it.

Aradia said...

Oh Kate....My beautiful strong sassy smart Kate. What did Benry say to you after breakfast? What did he threaten you with to make you stand there like a stupid female git while Sawyer laid out some beat down in the interest of intel? What happened to the woman who could take out a federal agent with her elbow? What happened to the woman who a full gown man needed five guns to feel safe from? What happened to my Kate!

Glad to see that Sawyer is still playing the con though. I knew I could count on him to be smart enough to see through it all.

"Maybe the characters on the show have daddy issues, but it's beginning to look like the writers may have some "mommy" issues. ;>)"

Fasten, lol, nice way to put it.

Cam794 - You obviously haven't seen many of my posts. They get longer! :D

2sweet - I thought that after the last episode something had to have happened to her in that time gap, and hopefully that will explain things a bit better and this change in her will turn out to be added depth and not a sudden shallowing of her personality. But at the moment we only know what we've seen and what we've seen is Kate in a disapointing new role.

I do kinda suspect that the Others are trying to manipulate her into that role. The dress, the fact she was breaking the rocks showing off her bum, the shower scene, the handcuffs. They are potentially molding her to be the damsel in distress. Just sad to see her fitting into the role so well. Maybe she's secretly enjoying it. I mean she's been on the run for a long time and a victim before that, perhaps she felt it was about time she got to just be a girl... a princess?

Is this what the Others are doing, trying to turn these three into what they want to be? For Kate it's the princess, for Sawyer it's the hero (because he's never been one for doing good, but maybe always wanted to, which could also explain his attitude towards do-gooder Jack). Now what does Jack really want? To watch the Red Sox win the world series? He could well be *that* shallow, I dunno. But then as someone mentioned earlier his Dad was always going on about that, so perhaps it does have some meaning. But I also suspect there is something important in his isolation. Perhaps he is being forced to open up, the explodign I said about before.

I don't know though. Why would the Others want to do that anyway? Maybe it's just a way to Justify Kate becoming a weak character.

Another thought on Kate, she was a victim before she was an outlaw. Maybe she's just gone back to being a victim again. Perhaps triggered by that missing time.

Anyway as I said she's disapointing in this episode and the last and the rest is speculation.

One final thing. I have to re-state because I think it's important. It's too obvious that Jae would have been killed by a Paik goon. He was clutching the necklace, perhaps because he was talking to Sun before he was pushed. If he had lived Mr.Paik would have just had him killed anyway and would probably have had Jin killed as well. I don't believe that he would know Jin defied him *again* and let him get away with it. Unless the watch thing was him being sent to his death, but why complicate it like that? I don't believe Mr. Paik knew that Jin failed and the only other person that I think could have done the act (I don't believe for a second it was suicide) is Sun. Unless of Kinetics theory of the Losties lives being engineered the whole time is true in which case it could have been some Hanso employee doing it. But even if Kin is right I would still find it hard to believe that it wasn't just Sun doing it to protect Jin....or HERSELF....

(hehe, I think while typing)

The opening clip depects Sun performing a selfish act. Forget about the lying, people have focused on that but I don't think lying is the real significance. Sun sacrificed the maid (who knows what happened to her, certainly the sack, maybe worse) to protect herself over something trivial. One thing we know about Sun is that there is a lot of fear in her and I suspect she is very dangerous when her back is against the wall. She *did* shoot at the end too.

Re: Whether Jae Lee's death was a suicide or not --

I'm in the suicide camp. He was beaten up and threatened by Jin. He assumed it was because Jin was a betrayed husband, finding about his affair with Sun...not a henchman for Mr. Paik. Even though Jin gave him the chance to live by disappearing, he felt dishonored. He also realized he couldn't go on without Sun, so clutching the pearls (which represented his love of Sun) he jumped to his death.

Thank you, Dennis!

Mike V. said...

HI MAVEN!! THE PANDA IS BACK!

I also agree that it was suicide on Jae's part. Either way, we're going to find out in the next Jin/Sun flashback episode or not at all. The latter means that i probably was suicide.

It is funny about the music...Desmond I could understand because he just had a record player. But Juliet had a CD of a 1960s song. That (and her emotional reaction to it) to me implies that it's a long time favorite of hers that she keeps in her collection, no matter what the medium. I've definitely bought CDs of old albums or cassettes just because that's the only way to listen to them now.

Or it is a cruel joke perpetuated by the DI suppliers to only bring the Others 40 year old pop for their listening pleasure.

OK happy NOW! :-/

Cam794 said...

no no no no Jae's death was definity suicide..........probly i was doubting at first bcuz how could he jump out of a window and end up on Jins car on the street but then at the funeral Mr.Paik said he jump off a balcony but if you find a balcony thats that long LET ME KNOW! lol this isnt probly true but my first thoughts were.....lol.....the smoke monster dragged him out da window and dropped him.........wow......thats stupid but thats wat i thought hehe

Hi, lostinfrogurt. Couldn't miss your panda!

FYSB, sean and kvonhard: Choice of music is definitely interesting. I personally tend to stay with the oldies but goodies! Even though the Others might have access to the outside world, living as they do in almost a time-warp, Juliette probably tends to stay within her comfort zone. Somehow, Petula Clark has some meaning to her. We know Desmond didn't have much choice, but Juliette must have some choice to pick her music.

Not to beat a dead polar bear... but it's OK to speculate on what you think *might* happen in the next episode -- BUT, if you already KNOW what is going to happen because you read a spoiler somewhere else, please do spoil it for anyone here.

Maybe this will help:

What is a spoiler?

• Anything shown on the "previews of next week”"
• Information from other sources regarding information not in the show, such as articles, websites, webisodes, personal friendships with producers, etc.
• If you are posting a published article or just a general discussion about a show/actor/director, and it contains spoilers for anything that may happen in a future episode (If an article or discussion about an actor/director/show that does not give away any plot points, then it is not a "spoiler."

What is not a spoiler?

• Obviously, discussion about the current and previous episodes.
• Speculation about what you think might happen, provided it is based on information in the current or previous episodes, and not other spoiler information.

We know that Ben has always lived on the island, but we don't know how long anyone else has been there. Maybe Juliet moved to the island in the 80s, and brought all those CDs with her. Desmond only had records because that's what they stocked the hatch with when it was build in the 70s.

Cam - Where have you been the last few months? I've been posting hideously long posts here and in TLEC (and in ITE and Rachels Blog come to think of it) Since the ARG started up. It's kinda my MO. Lol.

The time it takes is not as long as you may think seeing as I think while typing (which often ends up my changing direction part way through) and I have a ludicrously fast typing speed.

Lockbox - The motivation is *because* Jin let the guy live. The guy was in love with Sun, he may not have left so easily and really I very much doubt the guy could sucsessfully disapear without Mr. Paik knowing. What do you think would happen when he found out? Well he'd kill him, of course, but then he'd extract revenge on Jin and probably Sun too for bringing shame to their/his family. Maybe not killing them, but it may be a possibility. I mean he is a hard core gangster type right? She could have lost a finger over it, Jin could have lost worse (I mean if he was already incapable of having kids...).

Although having said that, there must have been some kind of struggle because I can't see any reason that Sun would want to kill him while Jin was still around. It is possible it was just bad timing and Jin was slow to leave the building or something.

The daughter of Leto and Zeus, and the twin of Apollo. Artemis is the goddess of the wilderness, the hunt and wild animals, and fertility (she became a goddess of fertility and childbirth mainly in cities). She was often depicted with the crescent of the moon above her forehead and was sometimes identified with Selene (goddess of the moon). Artemis was one of the Olympians and a virgin goddess. Her main vocation was to roam mountain forests and uncultivated land with her nymphs in attendance hunting for lions, panthers, hinds and stags. Contradictory to the later, she helped in protecting and seeing to their well-being, also their safety and reproduction. She was armed with a bow and arrows which were made by Hephaestus and the Cyclopes.

In one legend, Artemis was born one day before her brother Apollo. Her mother gave birth to her on the island of Ortygia, then, almost immediately after her birth, she helped her mother to cross the straits over to Delos, where she then delivered Apollo. This was the beginning of her role as guardian of young children and patron of women in childbirth. Being a goddess of contradictions, she was the protectress of women in labor, but it was said that the arrows of Artemis brought them sudden death while giving birth. As was her brother, Apollo, Artemis was a divinity of healing, but also brought and spread diseases such as leprosy, rabies and even gout.

Being associated with chastity, Artemis at an early age (in one legend she was three years old) asked her father, the great god Zeus, to grant her eternal virginity. Also, all her companions were virgins. Artemis was very protective of her purity, and gave grave punishment to any man who attempted to dishonor her in any form. Actaeon, while out hunting, accidentally came upon Artemis and her nymphs, who bathing naked in a secluded pool. Seeing them in all their naked beauty, the stunned Actaeon stopped and gazed at them, but when Artemis saw him ogling them, she transformed him into a stag. Then, incensed with disgust, she set his own hounds upon him. They chased and killed what they thought was another stag, but it was their master. As with Orion, a giant and a great hunter, there are several legends which tell of his death, one involving Artemis. It is said that he tried to rape the virgin goddess, so killed him with her bow and arrows. Another says she conjured up a scorpion which killed Orion and his dog. Orion became a constellation in the night sky, and his dog became Sirius, the dog star. Yet another version says it was the scorpion which stung him and was transformed into the constellation with Orion, the later being Scorpio. Artemis was enraged when one of her nymphs, Callisto, allowed Zeus to seduce her, but the great god approached her in one of his guises; he came in the form of Artemis. The young nymph was unwittingly tricked, and she gave birth to Arcas, the ancestor of the Arcadians, but Artemis showed no mercy and changed her into a bear. She then shot and killed her. As Orion, she was sent up to the heavens, and became the constellation of the Great Bear (which is also known as the Plough).

Artemis was very possessive. She would show her wrath on anyone who disobeyed her wishes, especially against her sacred animals. Even the great hero Agamemnon came upon the wrath of Artemis, when he killed a stag in her sacred grove. His punishment came when his ships were becalmed, while he made his way to besiege Troy. With no winds to sail his ships he was told by the seer Calchas that the only way Artemis would bring back the winds was for him to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia. Some versions say he did sacrifice Iphigenia, others that Artemis exchanged a deer in her place, and took Iphigenia to the land of the Tauri (the Crimea) as a priestess, to prepare strangers for sacrifice to Artemis.

Artemis with her twin brother, Apollo, put to death the children of Niobe. The reason being that Niobe, a mere mortal, had boasted to Leto, the mother of the divine twins, that she had bore more children, which must make her superior to Leto. Apollo being outraged at such an insult on his mother, informed Artemis. The twin gods hunted them down and shot them with their bows and arrows; Apollo killed the male children and Artemis the girls.

Artemis was worshiped in most Greek cities but only as a secondary deity. However, to the Greeks in Asia Minor (modern day Turkey) she was a prominent deity. In Ephesus, a principal city of Asia Minor, a great temple was built in her honor, which became one of the "Seven Wonders of the Ancient World". But at Ephesus she was worshiped mainly as a fertility goddess, and was identified with Cybele the mother goddess of eastern lands. The cult statues of the Ephesian Artemis differ greatly from those of mainland Greece, whereas she is depicted as a huntress with her bow and arrows. Those found at Ephesus show her in the eastern style, standing erect with numerous nodes on her chest. There have been many theories as to what they represent. Some say they are breasts, others that they are bulls testes which were sacrificed to her. Which is the true interpretation remains uncertain, but each represent fertility.

There were festivals in honor of Artemis, such as the Brauronia, which was held in Brauron; and the festival of Artemis Orthia, held at Sparta, when young Spartan boys would try to steal cheeses from the altar. As they tried they would be whipped, the meaning of Orthia and the nature of the ritual whipping has been lost and there is no logical explanation or translation. Among the epithets given to Artemis are: Potnia Theron (mistress of wild animals) this title was mentioned by the great poet Homer; Kourotrophos (nurse of youth's); Locheia (helper in childbirth); Agrotera (huntress); and Cynthia (taken from her birthplace on Mount Cynthus on Delos). When young girls reached puberty they were initiated into her cult, but when they decided to marry, which Artemis was not against, they were asked to lay in front of the altar all the paraphernalia of their virginity, toys, dolls and locks of their hair, they then left the domain of the virgin goddess.

hey all, This is my last post here for a week. I'm off to Rome on satuday and tomorrow I don't think I will get to a PC. So enjoy episode four and I'll speak to you probably a week on sunday!

Capcom said...

True Kylelane. But you know, there does not seem to be much "joy in Mudville", so to speak. The Others seem to have a lot of latent hostilities toward each other, so in their Othertown microcosmic community, they are pretty much mirroring on their own scale the evils and ills that they believe will eventually lead to the rest of human race killing itself off. That is why I am almost losing sleep over them saying that they are the Good Guys.....their community has (seemingly) fallen into the same human nature traps as the whole rest of the world! Scientists, heal thyselves for crying out loud! If they truly think that they are that much holier than the rest of the world, they are seriously mentally ill, and the Losties need to take them down ASAP, no prisoners, "no quarter". Sayid understands this.

Capcom said...

You lucky dog, Fenris!! Have fun! :-)

Capcom said...

Correct! :-) I sure hope that TPTB eventually give us good insight on how the D.I. scientists, or their offspring/subjects got everything so twisted around over the years. Perhaps just plain good old-fashioned absolute isolation did the trick. Mass, collective paranoia?

To your second post, these Others really remind me of the kind of creeps that one runs into in the workplace, more often than not. They do what they can to get you in trouble and make you look bad, so that they can look good. Then, when you try to fight back and defend yourself, YOU'RE the bad guy and seen as starting the trouble and making them the enemies. Arg. So glad that I'm out of that environment for now. Whew.

"You never made soup for me." I have a different thought on when Ben made that comment to Juliet. Everyone's thinking that Ben and Juliet had a relationship together, which they may have had, but I think there's more to it.

This sort of goes along with the Juliet is "Him" theory. Why would the Others reveal their true leader? "Him" could be Juliet, one of the other "Others" we've seen, or someone we haven't seen yet. What if Ben was once in the same place as Jack, as a prisoner? Therefore when Ben made the soup comment he was stating that Juliet never brought him soup when he was being pre-brainwashed.

I'm going on the opinion that the "Others" need Dr. Jack to "fix" Colleen. Colleen might be more important than we realize. We're already seen the "Others" make deals eventhough the deal may not be in their best interest (the whole Michael and Walt deal).
