THE GLASS BALLERINA - SEASON 3, EPISODE 2 (POST 2)

This is a "lag alleviation" post for "The Glass Ballerina". So much great conversation resulted in the previous thread, we had to start a new one! While you discuss, you may be interested in viewing screen caps from the episode or checking out this Entertainment Weekly article by Christine Fenno. Have fun!

I am re-posting b/c I got the last on on the last threas soooo.

I am going to post even though there will most likely be a lag post soon!

1. Getting caught up...Hanso Adoptions-LOLOLOLOLOL:)

2. Megan said--Juliet/Ben/Others: I think Ben is "him". I think Juliet is/was his equal, and i think they had a relationship OR are brother and sister.
I agree with the siblings idea. I have had that half-formed since Wednesday, but haven't had time to really think on it. Definately seems to be something like a sibling relationship though.

3. "Chain-gang looks good on you Freckles"....awesome!:)

and First:P

Did the official Lost Podcast come late for everyone or was it just me?

The Podcast did come out late! Usually it comes out the day before the episode airs. THis new one came out hours before.

Good morning all-
Looks like it will be a slow day...maybe things will pick up this evening.
This weekend, I'll probably rewatch the first two episodes.

good morning... just stopping by to catch up on the comments.

Twinkle: You don't need to pass out. ;-) We play poker, not Euchre. Hold 'Em, game of champs.

And, incidentally, I'd like to thank everyone on here b/c we were talking about Lost last night and I totally got to be the champ b/c I could nearly quote the conversation Jack's dad has about the Red Sox when we were talking about it. One friend remembered a mention of Bosox, but no one else thought he was right. Except, of course, me. :-D Go LoCo!!

Dumb question from the computer illiterate for those not in the US (and vaguely irrelevant): www.abc.com

So, if you guys were to type that into your computers, would you only get your country's version of abc.com? In other words, I want to view a british site, it has .uk somewhere. But the .com seems like if I accessed it from someplace else, I should still get to the normal site. Seems to me that your stations would be losing money on show episodes if people can get them straight from abc (not pirated or something) before they're aired?

Dark Angel said...

Hi Guys

Just popping in as I have been / am really busy.

KvonhardWith regards to ABC.Com, from the UK we get the same site but we are unable to watch /download any video content as it blocks IP addresses from outside the US. We do not get ABC in the UK, Lost is broadcast by Channel 4. I know there is at least one ABC channel I get (I get around 300-400 TV Channels through Sky) but it seems to be just old reruns and certainly no Lost.

To be honest even if I could download Lost from ABC or iTunes in the UK, I would still Bit Torrent it as it is better quality.

I'm going to save some stuff for the podcast but I'm still not convinced that The Others are bad guys.

I'm not surprised by their reaction to the Losties - bear in mind that the Losties have killed Ethan, Goodwin and possibly Collen as well as three other Others whose names we do not know, they tortured poor old Benry . And don't forget that Sawyer, Kate, Sayid, Michael, Eko and Anna Lucia are/were all killers, Charlie is a Heroin Addict, Jin hired muscle, Hurley and mental patient, Sun a compulsive liar... No wonder a nice girl like Juliette wants nothing to do with them.

Good morning!

I'm listening to the official podcast and it was said that Carl is NOT a plant. We should find out why he is a prisoner by the 6th episode.

...and there are other others in other places.

Dark Angel said...

Hi Cattygirl

Well that blows some of my theories out of the water.

I wonder if the other Others are working with or against the Benry Others?

(All these others are getting confusing)

Sara said...

Carl's NOT a plant? I was re-watching the season 2 finale (my ex-boyfriend is so, SO close to being caught up on Lost... he got hooked when we started dating at the beginning of the summer) and DEFINITLY saw the same guy (that babyface is a giveaway) in the fake-me-out village the Others set up when Michael came. Also, Danny (the one who kissed Colleen), I am almost certain, is the one who Michael walked up on while peeing... in other words, the decoy to get Michael into their trap.

Maybe Carl was one of them, then did something wrong? Or, maybe as a prisoner he was forced to be part of the fake camp?

Dark Angel said...

Or Maybe Carl and Alex were going to elope and run off to the other Others camp but poor old Carl got caught.

Dark Angel said...

Hey,

anyone thing Ben could be Alex's father? Or maybe Tom?

Dark Angel said...

Hey Sara,

Just had a look at your Blog -very cool - liked your observations of London. Glad you like our little city :)

Anybody remember the 1937 classic film "Lost Horizon"? Survivors from a plane that crash lands in the Himalayas, are rescued by the people of the mysterious, Eden-like valley of Shangri-la. The people of Shangri-la cannot leave because the valley prevents them from aging...they appear young but are hundreds of years old. When the survivors leave, the one that goes with them instantly ages as soon as she is beyond the boundry of Shangri-la. What if the Lost Island has the same kind of thing going on... if the Others leave the Island, something bad will happen that would be fatal or make them revert to a sick or debilitated state?

Dark Angel said...

Mmn Maybe when TPTB said that the Losties were not dead what they missed out was that they will however be dead if they leave the island - Oh dear poor Michael and Walt....

Mind you Desmond seemed OK but that maybe because he's Scottish :P (DA gives away his origins!)

static13 said... "You never made soup for me." I have a different thought on when Ben made that comment to Juliet. Everyone's thinking that Ben and Juliet had a relationship together, which they may have had, but I think there's more to it. This sort of goes along with the Juliet is "Him" theory.

Ange said...Megan said--Juliet/Ben/Others: I think Ben is "him". I think Juliet is/was his equal, and i think they had a relationship OR are brother and sister. I agree with the siblings idea. I have had that half-formed since Wednesday, but haven't had tome to really think on it. Definately seems to be something like a sibling relationship though.

I think Ben is "Him". I think the show is tying to make that abundandtly clear. Colleen reported to Ben. Ben decided what needed to be done. Ben wants the boat. Juliet "broke" Jack, but Ben dropped the bombshell on him. Ben sits in the control room and watches everyone.

As far as the relationship between Ben and Juliet, I think there were romantically involved until recently and the other Others know all about it. When Colleen comes down to report about the boat, she ask "Am I interupting something?". It seemed she didn't want to get in the middle of a personal conversation and/or fight. When Ben says "You never made soup for me", he sounds jealous and a little hurt. Same thing when he say "So I guess I'm out of the book club" ... meaning that now that they are not dating he's not in the book club.

All of those thing would be way too creepy if they were brother and sister. Even for creepy Ben.

Dark Angel said...anyone thing Ben could be Alex's father? Or maybe Tom?

I thought Rousseau killed Alex's father when the sickness came.

cyberyang said...

Sara-
Good find on Carl from the S2 finale.
It obvious that he and Alex are together. I think their escape plan foiled when Carl was caught.

Also, Danny is not a new face to S3. We only knew him as Pickett from S2. Michael did walk up to him peeing. He is also the one who took blood from Michael.

Dark Angel said...

Dennis Said:

I thought Rousseau killed Alex's father when the sickness came.

Thats what she said but then as I said in the podcast I think Rousseau is a plant so that may be just a cover.

Dennis said...

Dark Angel said...Or Maybe Carl and Alex were going to elope and run off to the other Others camp but poor old Carl got caught.

First, it's Karl with a K - according to the AMEX site

I was pretty sure Karl wasn't a plant after Alex came looking for him. I think that Karl was an other that got into trouble with Alex for some reason. It looks like Alex managed to escape, but Karl got caught.

An interesting question now would be: Where did Karl orignially come from? Is he a child of the others? Or was he one of the tailies that was abducted in the first night, and has been brainwashed like Alex. Maybe that's why Alex and him were friends. And what were they doing to get in trouble? Were they trying to leave the island, or maybe help the Lostaways?

Anaother thing I'm thinking is that the others didn't "let" Sawyer try to escape, as a plan to let him know that he will be caught. I think he did actually escape, with the help of Karl, and would have got away if it wasn't for the "deer in the headlights" moment with Juliet.

Dennis said...

Dark Angel said... Thats what she said but then as I said in the podcast I think Rousseau is a plant so that may be just a cover.

Well, that's a very deep rabbit hole.

I think's she's just crazy. They didn't know about Desmond and the boat, it's conceivable that they didn't know about Rousseau.

Dark Angel said...

Well they must have had some knowledge as they have Alex and I still think 16 years is a long time to go undetected even for a crazy French Woman.

Hmmm....if the Others didn't know about Desmond, did they know about Kelvin? Surely they must have, since Benry insinuated to Locke the button was a joke. But Benry hasn't shown any curiosity as to why the Losties were there pushing the button and Kelvin was no where to be found.

Hi everyone.

I finally got caught up with all the comments. I ended up watching those crazy Detroit Tigers on Lost Day, so I didn't get to see the show until yesterday. (Anyone else here a long-suffering Tigers' fan?)

I'll try to think of some new comments/questions to add to the discussion, but you guys hit just about everything that I was going to say.

Also, I apologize for posting too much summary information from the last ABC podcast. I can see now that that type of info is too spoilerish for this blog.

I'm just at a loss to X-plain how Benry could be clueless about goings-on at the swan, when he obviously has camera access to every other Dharma station -- and we know the Swan had the same type of camera.

Oh, and Hi everyone.

kvonhard said...

Here's my other recent thought, that I can't remember if anyone's mentioned so far.

The Others - Juliette/Benry, Collen/whatshisname - did you ever notice that, to the extent that these people are/were romantically involved, their body language is extremely stilted? Colleen seems to be repulsed by the kiss from her man in their scene together.

This led me to wonder about the Others and sex. They seem to have issues with physical intimacy, to me. They seem to be uncomfortable around people who are physical. They seem to have loads of personal space, considering how they know each other so well. Almost robotic in nature.

I was almost wondering if they're celibate b/c that would allow them to remain "pure". Not too disimilar from Catholics, etc.

blueheron13 said...

I have to belive that Benry knew everything that was going on in the Swan. I believe he knew about both Kelvin and Desmond being there, and he probably could hear all of their conversations too. He probably knows about Radzinsky's suicide (or whatever in fact did happen to Radzinsky). I bet he even new that Kelvin was exploring and mapping the island.

Even if this is true, though, Kelvin may have been covert enough in his boat-building operation that the Others never discovered the refurbished vessel. For all Ben and the Others do know, they might have believed that Desmond's boat WAS completely wrecked when Des arrived on the island.

capcom said...

Yes Engineer27! And, if we see who amongst the Others is a smoker, we may know who was sitting in the Pearl/"?" station smoking and watching the cameras. Have we seen an Other smoking yet? And how could they not know about Desmond? Although, if they didn't know about Des' boat, they would have to be wondering how the heck Des got on the island, when they saw him all of a sudden living with Inman in the Swan station.

blueheron13 said...

kvonhard,

Along your line of thought:

I'm guessing that the younger Others are children of the original Dharma Initiative participants (and that the older Others are likely the originals themselves). But yet there are no children to be found so far, and the Others are fixated on the children from the plane.

So maybe it's like you're saying - there is some sort of imposed rule about celibacy. Or, maybe one of the incdients referred to on the Blast Door caused infertility?

noblelawyer said...

I think they knew that Desmond was shipwrecked - the operative word being shipwrecked. They thought, as did Desmond, that the boat had been destroyed.
Kelvin, was hiding the fact that the boat was o.k. from Desmond, so the others didn't know either. The others obviously don't have cameras all over the island. and never went to that cove that Kelvin had hid the boat away at.

capcom said...

Blueheron, just saw your post. That is true, the Others could have wrongly assumed that Des' boat was wrecked and therefore were shocked as to how the Lostaway's acquired any vessel.

Even if they did deploy to Desmond's wreck, as they did the plane's, they might not have known it could be there until they saw Des with Inman in the station, since Desmond's wreck was not as noticable in the storm as a plane coming down (and there was [presumably] no magnetic anomoly attached to it). Which was maybe too late, as by then Inman may have already have hidden the boat in the cove from the "hostiles".

Dennis said...

Dark Angel said... Well they must have had some knowledge as they have Alex and I still think 16 years is a long time to go undetected even for a crazy French Woman.

Yeah, I forgot about them taking Alex. Which would sort of prove that Rousseau is not an other, or she wouldn't need to "find" Alex.

Speaking of Rousseau, I wonder if the boat that the Others gave to Michael and Walt was orginally Rousseau's boat from when she crashed ashore?

Hi engineer27!

Here are a couple of things that popped into mind about the rock chopping labor camp:

1. This season, Danny Pickett (or whatever his name is) is acting like an unintelligent jerk, like an angry buffoon. In Season 2, he seemed a little more intelligent - he at least knew how to draw blood from Michael. So I'm wondering, is his new attitude just some play-acting, or is really just a stupid jerk?

2. In the scenes at the labor camp, did we ever get clear screen shots of anyone there besides Tom Friendly, Danny Pickett, Juilet, Colleen, Alex, and Sawyer/Kate? It seemed to me at the time that unlike at the book club, we were intentionally kept from seeing the other people there.

kvonhard said...

Blueheron - I'll be interested to watch the physical interactions amongst the male/female Others in the upcoming episodes.

Could be possible that Juliette is too passionate a woman to be confined by the rules? Or maybe the problem is that they aren't allowed to choose whom they end up partnered with but it comes as more of an "arranged marriage" type of deal. I just think there's something weird between the male/female relationships. I mean, Juliette's hot; Colleen wasn't hard to look at. According to Mr. Friendly, Kate's "not my type" which we all agree doesn't necessarily mean he's homosexual. I think there's more to this weirdness than meets the eye, and yet, I can't quite put my finger on it. A problem which is, now, starting to bug me. Arg. And to think I have work to do ...

blueheron13 said...

Noble,

Right - those are just the same lines I was thinking along.

Capcom,

Yes I think Kelvin was clever and strong enough to conceal the wreckage before an Other party could discover it.

blueheron13 said...

kvonhard,

Yeah, it's bugging me too. And it may not just be in the male/female interactions. As many here have noted, a lot of the interactions involving the Others have some sort of artificial feel to them.

I guess we'll learn more later.

Twinkle said...

kvonhard: I'm right there with you. There is some sexual/partner wierdness going on with the others. (BTW, I just watched the episode last night, I haven't searched the comments for things that have already been said, and I'm short on time so sorry if I repeat.)

Loaded lines (not quoting exactly):
Ben to Juliet - "You never made me soup."
Colleen - "Am I interupting something?"
Juliet - "Would it matter if you were?"
Guy to Colleen - "Take care of yourself" *kiss*

So Ben and Juliet were something once (based on several personal references between the two), but Colleen wants Ben in some way, but she already has a buy? You know what it reminds me of, either some sort of free love communal "marriage" or a wolf pack. Can't the other males mate in the wolf pack but the alpha male gets first choice or first go or something? No real defined pairs but a definite sexual hierarchy?

Why is it that I never see the ending of an episode coming? It takes me by surprise every time. It's like they just get through the story introduction and the momentum gets moving and then wham! LOST

One more thing that struck me from the episode:

I'm wondering why Benry was so keen on obtaining the boat. Maybe he's planning on using the boat as part of his plan to convince Jack to cooperate with the Others. The boat could be given to Jack as his means of conveyance away from the island.

In fact, maybe the Others don't have another boat at the moment now that Michael is gone. No, wait, then how could their party have reached Sun via the water? Unless they emerged from a tunnel?

Aaahh, too much thinking - I'm talking to myself. I better go back to workin' and lurkin'.

Twinkle said...

I think I'm wrong about how a wolf pack works, but I definitely remember seeing something about an animal that lived in packs and operated that way.

wv: sofya - The next Other who has some kind of history/sexual tension with Ben.

This might be more appropriate for TSoL, but...

This reminds me of the Shakers. The Shakers believed in Men and Women being equal and had Men and Women leaders who were equal in power. However, they also believed in celebacy, so they relied on adoption or new members to grow thier ranks.

However I don't think Colleen was repulsed by the kiss. I just think she didn't was to kiss in front of everyone, especially the "prisoners".

blueheron13 said...

Twinkle,

I also never saw that end coming, with the offer to Jack and the mention of the Red Sox. As a side note, I'm surprised they even put a copy of a Fox broadcast on ABC, complete with the play-by-play commentary.

The whole ending sequence, beginning with Ben watching the TV monitors, then having that up-close-and-personal chat with Jack, that was just riveting stuff to me. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode.

Twinkle said...

Dennis: Seemed to me that was a woman who didn't want to be with the man she was officially with and humored him when he kissed her.

Anybody listen to the official podcast for this episode? Did it reveal or imply anything significant?

I briefly caught a conversation yesterday about whether Sun was in Jae's hotel room after Jin. Did the podcast shed any light on that? Personally I think he jumped, but it could easily be something else.

kvonhard said...

Also, I agree with Twinkle. Whether you're embarassed with a public display of affection or not, you normally don't look quite so, er, disgusted and turn your head away when the person kisses you. Additionally, it's kinda hard to get all tense and rigid when you like a person and they kiss you.

Twinkle said...

kvon: Thanks, I feel better. :-) LOL I'm too bad of a liar for poker.

About the Others personal relationships, it also reminds me of camp. The teenagers pair off for a while and then mix it up every so often. Emotions run high. It's Jerry Springer in small scale. But when you live in such a small community you have to put the nice face on anyway. Anybody here live(d) in a small town? I bet tensions would run high especially because with the Others there are guns and shockers involved. Small group of people, living in close quarters, long periods of contanct without outsiders, switching up partners, alliances forming based on power and position, can you imagine the gossip!? Wait, now the Others are sounding like Survivor or Big Brother!

mountain girl said...

Ok, finally caught up after a week of travel (I taped the episode and watched it last night).

What are our thoughts about the blood draws? This seems like a place where the show might tie together with TLE. Are the Others drawing blood to do genetic testing to see if these guys are part of the 30% that need to be offed? Are they taking blood for their own transfusions to extend their lives, like Mittlewerk and Hanso? Or are they injecting something into them, like the *vaccine* the Others injected into Claire?

BTW, I miss Hurley!

Twinkle said...

I think it's much more likely that their sexual activity isn't held in check like the Shakers or the Puritans. But maybe they do need new DNA or adoptions in order to multiply because of whatever "sickness" the vaccine is supposed to protect against or because of the electromagnetism screwing with their ability to reproduce. I liked the EW article suggesting that Ben's "two weeks" statements to Kate were based on her fertility cycle.

Wow. I can't believe I missed the "Would it really matter if you were" line. I've watched the episode several times now. :)

I'm thinking the line would continue as "Would it really matter if you were? It's not like we're dating anymore."

I don't see a Colleen/Ben connection, other than he's the boss.

mountain girl said...

Also, I love the idea of Juliet being the most evil Other of them all. It reminds of the scariest movie I ever saw, a Japanese movie called the Audition, where the sweetest looking woman turned out to be completely twisted and evil.

Twinkle said...

Dennis: I don't remember the actual line but it seemed to be communicating something like - "Why would it matter to you if we were getting it on?" Juliet totally knows Connie is after Ben in some way. And Connie's reaction to the guy who kissed her confirmed it.

Twinkle said...

If Ben were the alpha male or a high rank, some would want him just for the social position and power it gave them, a la a wolf pack. This makes Juliet's rejection of him even more interesting.

mountain girl said...

I agree that there is someone above Ben. Even though he's a great lyer, he seemed genuinely scared last season when he referred to *him* as a great but unforgiving man. Also, he seems to much in the trenches with all of the Others. I get the feeling there is someone else above them all (possibly in the outside world?) who is also watching the cameras and commanding the action.

blueheron13 said...

Dennis,

I don't see a Colleen/Ben connection either. I think she, probably knowing their past, just didn't want to rudely interrupt them if they were having an intense personal conversation. Especially since Ben looks like the kind of person the other Others don't want to make angry.

Twinkle said...

Hey guys! Time will tell about the Collen/Ben connection. I'm not willing to die for the idea. Just call it a woman's intuition. ;-) If they were real people that's how I'd read them.

blueheron13 said...

About the "great but unforgiving man" comment:

I think the producers have said in the past that originally the actor who plays Ben was originally supposed to just guest star in a few episodes, but they liked the actor's presence and creepiness so much that they decided to keep him on the show.

So my theory is that the producers may have originally had the idea of Ben being a subordinate to HIM, and maybe had some other actor in mind to play HIM, but made a change midstream and scripted Ben to be the leader, to be HIM.

I thought Rousseau was on The Black Rock.

mountain girl said...

blueheron, that makes sense. Still I think Ben is the top man on the ground, but there is someone making commands from higher up. That would explain the contact with the outside world - someone is invested (even if it's not Hanso or Dharma) in having the Others have the resources to complete their mission, whatever that may be.

FYSB said...

I believe the Black Rock was the old sailing ship where they found the dynamite.

I get the sense that Danielle's ship was a more modern research vessel.

mountain girl said...

I agree with fysb about Danielle having a more modern research vessel - if she's telling the truth about how she got to the island, of course. The boat the Others gave Michael and Walt was tattered and pretty small (didn't rousseau say at one point she had something like 16 colleagues originally?).

CattyGirl said...

Thanks... I def. was mixed up.

blueheron13 said...

mountain girl,

Very true! We've seen nothing on the show that would preclude there being someone to whom Ben answers, someone in the outside world that knows all about everything on the island.

blueheron13 said...

If Ben's offer is valid, is there any chance that Jack actually would take him up on it and leave the island? That would be a twist!

kvonhard said...

I dunno. I'm still leaning towards there being something considered "icky" about the physical aspect of a relationship. I'm not convinced Mr. Friendly is homosexual and his line to Kate was fairly interesting in that regard. I have yet to meet a guy that finds that Evangile Lily isn't "his type." :-) I think that we were supposed to pick up on that line and some of the other signifiers.

And yes, Twinkle - I've both been to camp and grew up in a small town. Oye. I don't know if I agree that the Others have that going on. I didn't get anything from Colleen other than a bit of hero worship. No girlie doe eyes. No gushy unable to form a complete sentence around him. Until I see some action from an Other that *isn't* Juliette, I'm sticking to my celibacy theory. :-D

kvonhard said...

Blueheron - I mentioned this yesterday, but I'll repost it here.

I wonder if the twist will be that Jack chooses to stay on the island not because he agrees with the Others but because he has nothing left to return to at home. No wife, dead father, job which he probably now dislikes b/c it helped ruin his marriage. What if he selfishly thwarts everyone getting off the island? In the real world, he never refers to anyone as "friend" and doesn't seem to have any really. In the first episode, he screams, "where are my FRIENDS?!" with an emphasis on that word.

Twinkle said...

I'm back. I love how this show just keeps bringing up questions. Maybe I'm imagining the Juliet/Ben/Colleen triangle thing?

Also I thought there was a lot of subtext surrounding the Juliet & water/ Sawyer / Kate & kiss thing? Did anybody else catch that?

mountain girl said...

Another interesting irony... Kate escapes her bounty hunter who was taking her to prison only to end up in a cell on the island!

FYSB said...

Hey Twinkle...I don't think you're imagining the tension between Juliet and Colleen. But maybe there's another cause? Perhaps Ben promoted Juliet over Colleen. Or maybe Colleen and Juliet are sisters. Or Juliet won't share her muffin recipe. Or Colleen has to eat the fish biscuits while Juliet gets to eat grill cheese.

Twinkle said...

fysb: Too funny! Maybe, but it seemed like high school to me. There I go again with *another* analogy for what's going on in the Others. I just think it would be sooo ironic if the scary and mysterious others were really about as mature as teenagers in their personal lives.

About Sawyer, the water, and the kiss-

Sawyer's MO has been to do whatever gives him a leg up. Juliet's offer of water seemed to mean much more to Sawyer to him than just water. I think he normally would have been more physically attracted to Juliet. Then he would have accepted her water and flirted with her in order to gain some advantage with her, maybe make conditions better for him or at least keep the possiblity open that he could con her in the future to his own ends (getting free or whatever). So his pouring out the water meant more than just defiance of the Others. It meant a rejection of the way he usually would have worked things. In that mindset he turns to Kate and sets his lot with her, the underdog. To affirm his rejection of his old MO and his alliance with her, he is moved to kiss her. (Not sure if I'm expressing this clearly?)

It just reminded me as akin to what a spouse does when they see that they could be attracted to someone else but then the go home and choose to passionately kiss their spouse instead. So in the midst of the tale of Sun's unfaithfulness, the writer's juxtapose a tale of newfound faithfulness.

Last comment for the day - mentioned the whole celibacy/arranged partnership thing to my husband. His response was that maybe that's why Alex and Karl ran away. Obviously, Alex cares about Karl. If they didn't want to have an arranged partnership and wanted to be together, that might be more important to the Others than the fact that Karl tried to escape. It would go against their philosophy and going against philosophy would be the reason that they locked Karl up.

Re: Shakers, celibacy, etc., perhaps the Virus had an unexpected side-effect that has rendered them sterile, so they have to steal children to increase the size of their community for the future.

Q: Was the boat that Mike and Walt took off on the little putt-putt that the Others pulled up in when they took Walt? I'm too lazy right now to go back and check out the stills for that ep, but will later.

Re: Tom Friendly's comment about Kate.....maybe he just likes his women big and tall? He would kind of crush her. :-p

I thought when Sawyer poured out the water, he turned to Kate and realized he could have given it to her. She looked really exhausted in that shot. The kiss may have been in part a recognition of his mistake in not offering the water to her. But I see what you are saying, Twinkle, it did look like he made a choice at the moment and moved toward Kate.

Sawyer is a con man. He never makes a move before weighing the pro's and con's and how it can benefit his road to his goal. He started a fight he couldn't win for some reason known only to him right now.

Ok....so I have to confess that I've only watched the episode once so far. I was going to watch it again last night, but I didn't get around to it. That having been said...I could be wrong but.......

Colleen and the kiss - Ok. So I admit I don't remember everything about this. But I do remember thinking that the set up was highly contrived. It seemed odd to me that they would have a public display of affection at that moment. So many other, more important things to worry about...like sailboats. I agree that Colleen was way stiff during the kiss, and is it me or did the guy say something before it...something like 'come here' or give me a kiss'? I could have been hitting the pipe at that moment but I think he did. That was so not the time for a comment like that, and if they were a couple I doubt he would have said anything. And on top of all of that I really get a dyke feeling from Colleen, but then again I could just be projecting.

Colleen and Juliet exchange - Ok...for me this moment was a strait up alpha bi*#@ moment. Something about the way Ben and Juliet stand, move around, and talk to each other says that at some point they were at least friendly. I still don't think they were ever a couple, at least not for very long (I'd put them into the category of Friends with Benefits), but what ever their relationship was or is Juliet is the alpha female in the group, and Ben the alpha male weather they like it or not. Being the Alpha anything means that at some point someone is going to challenge your position, no matter weather you are well loved in your position or not (take it from someone who knows.) The exchange between Colleen and Juliet as Colleen comes to tell Ben about the sailboat really spoke to a power struggle between the two, from what I saw. It wasn't a direct challenge to Juliet, as a matter of fact it was meant to be polite (had it not been dripping with sarcasm), but the tone, and the way Juliet responded, really reminded me of a pair of female wolves (to continue an analogy already in use) eyeing each other. They aren’t going to attack now, but they have attacked before and they will again, and they both know it.

Ok…So that’s what I think…not that it matters. Again…I’ve only seen the episode once, so this might all change by Monday after I’ve watched it again. And this is all assuming that these actors and actresses are brilliant (which I firmly believe they are, thus allowing me to read body language and facial expressions despite it not being ‘real’) So now…you can all tell me how crazy I am for thinking this. Please.

Capcom said... Was the boat that Mike and Walt took off on the little putt-putt that the Others pulled up in when they took Walt?

Yes, I think so.

capcom said...

Maybe Sawyer's pouring out of the water was his first attempt to get them to come at him. When that didn't work, he tried the kiss tactic. I also wouldn't put it past Sawyer to just be saying, "No thanks, I'll drink my bear water when I get back to the cage." :-p Or, "Your little "good cop" trick is not going to work on me." Who knows, he's so sneaky and always scheming.

I think that we are going to be in pretty bad shope whe this show goes on hiatus for, how many weeks????? Hooboy.

FYSB said...

I like ular's thought. Sawyer calculates every move. He poured out the water Juliet offered him to make sure he had her and everyone else's attention. He wanted to start the fight to test them. He had been told that if he and Kate had any contact/communication, he would be shocked. He chose to kiss her because if he's gonna get into a fight, he's going to get something for himself too. Also, a kiss is so off the charts it will guarantee the Others will come running.

So he gets everyone's attention, does something shocking that brings them in to attack and is able to get the measure of each guard. He also gets to make out with Kate. Brilliant.

Lets see if I can guess it right. Ben, the leader of this cult, gets any woman he wants and all the women want to please him (Hugh Heffner if you will) However Juliet doesn't want Ben, and Ben likes that alot. So Connies remark was jelous or perhaps Connie is the village $2.... we'll leave that blank however it would explain why some other guy would kiss her.

The reason Ben made the offer to Jack was because later on when Sawyer goes to make his excape with Kate and Jack, Ben is going to call out for his "cooperation" and the 2 will lose and Jack will complete the deal turn on them. Just like Kates little breakfast. Something happened there to make it look like there was a struggle however she's kind of in on it now too like she was promised something. I think it will be about 3 more episodes before we find out Bens last name is really Jeffs and it's from Utah.

Just rewatched Ep. 2 in search of some inspiration for something to say on Passafist's podcast and I realized something. An undercurrent of this ep is how other people are punished for your misdeeds. Sawyer got shocked because Kate asked a question. Sayid was going to kidnap 2 others and use one to make the other talk. The one who's not "cooperating" gets someone else punished.

I think the scene at the beginning is much more telling than I originally thought. Sun broke the ballerina and blatantly lied about it to her father. He knew she was lying. He told her he would fire the maid if she stuck with that story. She knew her father would not punish her directly if she fingered the maid, so she did. The maid suffered for Sun's actions. That tells us a lot about the relationship between Sun and her father. And it also tells us that Sun knows good and well what her father has no problem punishing someone else if she messes up.

Flash forward to the affair. Sun knows from the second Daddy walked into the hotel room that Jae is the one that Big Daddy is going to punish.

When Jin comes home and says he "has to deliver a message" and that Big Daddy just "called me son", Sun knows exactly what is going to happen. But she does nothing and ultimately Jae dies. Sun, like us, can't know if it was murder or suicide, but either way, it's at least partially her fault because she does nothing to stop it.

When BigDaddy approaches Sun at Jae's funeral, her first question is not "How dare you have him killed?" but "Are you going to tell Jin?"

I think, even if Sun doesn't have blood on her hands, she at least has it on her conscience.

Now I can't wait to see who Rose off'd...

LostinFrogurt said...

Hey, guys! Nice post fysb. Have you considered the thought that Sun was in the room when Jin was beating Jae up, and to cover her lie up further, she pushed him off the balcony?

megan said...

hi guys! just popped in to read some comments!

everyone has made some great points, but i especially liked all the conversation about the Others and their physical intimacy issues (the colleen kiss). it makes a LOT of sense..considering their affinity for taking children!

juliet/ben/colleen: while i agree juliet and ben had SOME sort of relationship..love/hate or whatever..i also agree colleen maybe has a thing for him. it could just be hero worship, and she's jealous of juliet for being the one woman able to be so close to him. maybe they're all jealous of her, who knows. but there was definitely a tone to her voice when she said "am i interrupting something?" especially the clipped way juliet responds to her suggests there's some tension there. just my two cents. :]

fysb-i totally agree. the whole episode was about being punished for others..it was most obvious when sawyer was shocked for kate's question. also, when he poured out the water my first thought was "HELLO!! i'm sure kate the rock chopper could have used that!" then he made out with her, so i figure she's not too mad. =D

megan said...

i'm also thinking, in regards to kelvin and desmond, i'm sure he knew they were there and watched them pushing the button. i mean, he did tell locke the button was a joke (someone mentioned that earlier). however, i agree with the other person who said that they may not have known he still had a functioning sailboat, particularly because it had been, at that point in Lost-Time, 3 years since he had crashed there? (Correct me if I'm mistaken!) So, maybe the thought he still had his sailboat never crossed the Other's mind..therefore, they were shocked. But they certainly sprung into action quickly to get it!

mountain girl said...

I just watched the Epi again. The guy who plays Ben is so good!!! He seems so unbalanced in the last scene with Jack - the way he starts to say he wants Jack to change his attitude, but then says perspective instead, the way he introduces himself and then seems shocked when Jack won't shake his hand. He acts like he has no clue why Jack is surprised the red socks won, yet he has the VCR prepped to exactly the part where the announcer says they won... so good!!!

And one more time... I miss Hurley!!

FYSB said...

Hi there Frogurt...I'm so happy the panda is back!

Good question about whether Sun was in the room. Honestly, I don't think she was. Jin left her at the apartment when he went to "deliver the message". I'm not sure if she would have been able to get there before him, especially since Jae was not in the room when Jin got to him.

My opinion is that Jae realized that he was busted when Sun's father caught them, then realized that he could never be with Sun after Jin beat him up and told him to leave the country. He decided to jump rather than living without her in shame. The necklace he was clutching in his hands told us everything.

it was heaps weird to me when ben said hes been there his whole life, meaning he was born on the island..i had a theory that he could have been the DeGroots son, but the last name flew that off track.

the others seem to be weak, cause jack took advantage of juliet, and now sawyer..

Just checking in (was not on-line yesterday dealing with an ill father-in-law):

As usual, everyone has been very chatty...great comments and observations on what we've got so far this season. I'm definitely in the camp that Ben/Juliette/Jack/Sawyer/Kate form some kind of bizarre relationship interactions. Ben/Juliette had something going in the past and are now have difference of opinions about how things should be run and dealt with; Juliette has given Jack and Sawyer her little smirk/come hither look; and, of course, Sawyer/Kate...the kiss was just a bonus to him scouting out the opposition...which is the number one thing a great con artist does before he pounces.

Also, the Alex/Karl thing is interesting. I believe they might have been planning something (like running away, or telling the losties something) and Karl got caught and was being punished. Alex says to Kate: "You weren't supposed to be in that cage." She probably meant she should have been in there herself because she was the real guilty one.

But I guess those "ancient" screens are working okay and, since they most likely don't have unlimited modernization funds, they are leaving well enough alone.

Maven - I agree. If Sun didn't tell Jin about speaking english, is she really going to tell him the baby may not be his?

capcom said...

Is there anyone on this blog with more than superficial knowledge (that would be me) of Asian culture here? I was wondering how much the fact that female children in China/Asia (not sure about Korea) seem to be situated as second-class citizens (compared to sons), may have affected how TPTB portrayed Sun's behavior, i.e., the need to lie to survive. If you think about it, even Jin (a poor worker from a poor family) eventually got more respect overall from the world than Sun, who was a rich girl from privilege. I don't think any less of her now, just because of what we saw in this week's ep. Not that I condone lying or cheating on your spouse of course. But in light of what we have seen previously of her backstory, what all the people around her did, and how she was treated culturally, I really find it a matter of course that she would do the things that she did in this ep. I know, boring topic, but I was just wondering.

maven said...

Capcom: I'm not anywhere an expert in Asian culture at all! But from what little I pick up here and there, it does seem that women are second-class citizens. Aren't male babies more highly prized in Asia? So Sun's upbringing made her subservient to Jin, but the tides turned when they ended up on that island. She is gradually getting more "liberated" (it doesn't happen overnight...just 69 days!), and is asserting her independence more. She realizes she is valuable on the island (her knowledge of medicinal herbs), and she just not a wife to a Korean man. She even has begun to talk back to Jin and gets in her 2 cents worth. However, there is still some slight guilt on her part for doing that. But she realizes that this new society developing on the island gives her a chance to be her own woman for once. And I think Jin is beginning to see and understand her value as a person.

k.barrick said...

With Jin and Sun's relationship (which truly is one of the most fascinating on television today), it's also interesting to see how Jin oscillates from the strict dominant/subserviant relationship to a more natural one... in terms of his own "jobs" on the island.

When working for Sun's dad, he was the muscle. He took orders. He was SUBMISSIVE, in fact, to Dad's demands and opinions. The anger from that partnership gets projected onto Sun.

At many times on the island, he goes back to that position of "the muscle" with limited thinking. But then he goes back to his roots of the fisherman... a more solitary, humble, but actually more powerful position. He has the power to feed the survivors or not. People will eat or starve (well, not really starve since there seem to be Dharma crap all around) due to his choice to fish or not. And the position allows him to think for himself as well... not taking orders from Sun's dad or Sayid or Jack. Or more recently, doing what Sun tries convince him of.

Hmmm... can you tell I'm reading lots of material on psychology and relationships?

Midnightstrider said...

Jin was upset when he found out Sun spoke english, can you imagine how upset he would be if Sun told him theres was only a 50% chance the child was his. Any man would be upset, but with the added family shame in Asian culture, Jin may feel even worse. I don't no wether Sun will tell Jin, because she loves him and the guilt will tear her up, but there is also no way to do a DNA test (unless the Others pull something else out of their sleeve) so if she decides not to tell Jin, WE many never know whos baby it is.

Also, with a new baby coming, the Others may capture Sun as they did Claire.

I hope that made sence, my thought porcess is all over the place...

k.barrick said...

I don't think there's a CHANCE IN HELL that Sun's pregnancy will come to term. Miscarriage is coming... it fits with some spoiler info that Kristin from E! Online gave (which I'm not talking about... but it's on Spoiler Fix).

capcom said...

Yes, interesting thoughts everyone! And true, Jin is becomming a better or more complete person on the island as is Sun. It was very nice to see how TPTB made them realize that they were both growing as human beings and as a couple via the situation together.

Wow, I did not even think about the posibility of Them taking Sun if they find out that she's pregs. That makes for some looming tension for us in the future, waiting for that to happen. :-O

Just saw on TV that there were some earthquakes in Hawaii taking place. Be sure to say some prayers for our Lostie friends, and Scoutpost who I think is vacationing there, as well as the islanders in general, if one is so inclined. :-/

Twinkle said...

k. barrick: I also wonder about miscarriage for Sun. Very good point about the Others taking Sun when they find out she's pregnant. I also wonder about how much Asian culture is playing a role in their relationship but are the writer's that insightful as to have researched and included it? Are they employing any Asian experts to help them get it right?

Were the events in Sun's flashbacks dated in any way? Otherwise how do we know that was not years before her crash on the island? Somehow she went from cheating on her husband to escaping her father with him to the United States. It just seems like more must have happened between those two events.

Twinkle said...

mountain girl said...

Wow, I didn't know about the earthquake until I read about it here. I hope everyone is ok!

The biggest reason I think Sun will have a miscarriage is how slowly time moves on the island. For the baby to be full term, she would have to be pregnant for about 9 years (1 season = ~1 month island time)! That seems very unlikely!

Which reminds me, having a baby myself, I laughed hysterically last year when Claire was explaining to someone that Aaron was sick and said something like *he woke up last night, and that's so unlike him, he's been sleeping through the night for a long time now.* Aaron was about 3 weeks old then! yeah right! LOL

capcom said...

Twinkle, UTPTB....would the "U" stand for Ulitmate? :-)

About time-lining the flashbacks: maybe in the future, TPTB will release a DVD that has all the flashbacks of each Lostaway in sequence, in chronological order. What I mean is, each person's complete set of flashbacks, put all together in one story for each character. Or better yet, maybe someone will eventually put them all together on YouTube, for free. :-D Any audio-visual geniuses out there willing to give it a try?

Mountain Girl, I know, what Claire said cracked me up too! But who knows, maybe that lovely island air, or the tranquil humming of the electromagnetics, kept Aaron asleep. :-)

Wonder if your quake did any damage to the LOST set? Take care.

Aloha! Back from Earthquake Island..er...I mean Hawaii. Haven't had time to read comments, and will have to get in lots of kid time today, but I will be back in full force for epi 3.
Becky- glad to hear you're ok and that things are getting better on Oahu. We were on the Big Island- very near the epicenter, but we were ok and the hotel/resort we were at was operating almost back to normal after lunch. Our flight out last night was on time, and we were home this morning. Earthquakes are uncool! Hope I never have to experience one again. I thought the hotel was going to come down on us. All our drawers came open, things were shaken off the tables and counters, the TV almost fell out of the armoire, and the lamps fell over...but we were ok. Glad to be back!

Hey kids. The one thing that struck me as odd in 'The Glass Ballerina' was the comment that Benry made about how Juliet never made HIM soup. It struck me as saying that she never made him soup when he was in the same position as Jack. Maybe Benry was not, in fact, born on the island as he said. He knows how to lie, and lie convincingly, and there's no lie better than the "Okay, here's the truth..." lie. He does definately seem to have a position of high authority among at least one group of Others, but I'm not convinced that Juliet isn't in fact more of a "Him"-type leader.
