capcom,

I hope we can eventually see what way beyond the sealed off areas of the Swan. Maybe there will be tunnels? Maybe one will lead to other places we haven't seen yet, like the Flame Station on the Blast Door map?

Capcom said...

It's possible that our insecure and self-conscious Locke took to wearing a wig to hide his baldness in his past. Otherwise, it does look pretty bad if it's supposed to be his hair. :-p

Melissa_Lossa said...

ha, ha - come on, isibell, say ya' to da UP, eh!

That's probably the bumper sticker that I see the most here in Michigan. :)

And that is a bad rug that they use on Locke - almost as bad as the one they use on Jack!

Capcom said...

Me too Blueheron, I hope that TPTB explore that area soon, maybe our Lostaways could discover them and gain an upperhand over the Others. If I were there, I would certainly jump down and check out those tunnels.....also to see if there was any toilet paper left after the blast!

"Regarding the Hatch implosion...in order for the large structure to compress down into something that small, all the air inside it would have to be expelled at some point. Depending upon how quickly the collapse occurred, that expulsion could have quite a bit of force behind it, enough to blow the hatch "quarantine" door all the way to the beach. All sorts of other things could have been expelled along with the air -- Locke, Eko, Desmond, Eko's scripture stick, some Apollo bars, etc. My guess is that anything non-ferromagnetic could have been thrown clear. It could be that Desmond's Dharma clothes contain ferromagnetic particles as EM shielding, which would explain why they weren't thrown clear along with him."

Thanks for your input, Engineer27!! I'm glad you know about things like this! Your theory makes a great deal of sense.

Also, Ange said...
"...WHAT IF something was DONE to Desmond. Maybe Des has been somewhere/or was taken somewhere and has no memory of it?"

Ange: If Desmond was taken somewhere, it must have been by our hypothetical 'second' group of Others, because in Episode 2, Benry was surprised to learn about Desmond's sailboat. I'm assuming, based on his surprise, that he also didn't know about the sailboat's owner: Desmond. So, if he WAS taken, it wasn't by Benry's group.

We've all speculated about there being two groups of Others, one civilized (Benry's), and one not (the ones who stole the kids?). Not that Benry is acting very civilized right now, based upon his mistreatment of our Losties. Next week's episode looks like it's going to be gut-wrenching! Poor Sawyer!

Aradia said...

Capcom - That's just it...I don't think it's bad props. This is all stuff I learned in Props 101. (Yes I did take a class called Props 101. I was a technical theater major. Yay crew!!!) And personally my pet peeves for continuity are cigarettes and cocktail glasses. No one ever seems to pay attention to those.

blue - that would insult the trolls. ;) plus calling you a yooper is much more insulting in a much more fun way. (I really can't say too much though...It isn't like I lived all that far away from the Upper Peninsula myself.)

Melissa_Lossa said...

All righty everyone - yoopers and not - it's tme for me to pack up and get outta here. Have a good night/day/morning, wherever you are!

Friday's_Child -- I hope you saw melissa_lossa's comment in response, about "magnetic drawers".

That concept still tickles me when I think about it!

It sounds like something DJ Dan would be interested in, to go along with his foil helmet.

Capcom said...

One thing that bugs me in the script is how Desmond talked to Hurley about the "magnetic anomaly"...how would he know that it was called that? Unless that was due to his newly found special insight....or perhaps Inman referred to it as that when they were talking about a failure to push the button, I can't remember.

OT -- Isibell, check out "Out of Africa" where Redford is peeling oranges when they're camped out......there's two, there's three, there's two again...peeled, unpeeled, peeled...it's a riot!

Hey guys, I re-watched the episode last night, and I have 2 questions...
1. If you do a screen by screen capture of the polar bear when Locke throws a rock at his forehead, (dead hit in the middle of his forehead), is it just bad animation, or did some black smoke puff out from around the rock as it hit it's head?

2. Did anyone mention to Hurley that the hatch was gone before he said to Desmond "So the Hatch blew off your undies." I can't remember how he found that out.

Aradia said...

Cap - I love it! Continuity is fun!

Remember a certain Sri Lankan video, that told us about numbers being broadcast? And remember a sinister TWM saying "We all know what happened. The Dharma Initiative failed."

I wonder if the implosion of the hatch and subsequent non-button pushing is what made Hanso/TWM think that the DI failed.

Not that it really impacts anything, but it distracts me from terrifying thoughts of maneating animated polar bears.

Friday's_Child said...

Yep, Engineer27, I got a kick out of that comment as well. I also laughed when you replied about imagining the possibility for product placements. Ha ha ha ha!!

(That WAS you that said that, right?)

MOuntain girl,
If he did say what happened , it wasnt in the episode. Maybe another missing clip that ended on the cutting-room floor t omake room for commercials.

I can see where you are coming from since the hatch imploded in 2004 and TLE took place in '06, but I get the feeling the DI failed long before the hatch imploded. Juliett seems to infer that the DI is over with her comment from epi one with Jack. "Doesn't matter who we were, just who we are." Juliett is speaking in 2004.

Friday's_Child said...

Gosh, Christine#2, you made some extremely observant comments!

Here they are again:

"1. If you do a screen by screen capture of the polar bear when Locke throws a rock at his forehead, (dead hit in the middle of his forehead), is it just bad animation, or did some black smoke puff out from around the rock as it hit it's head?

2. Did anyone mention to Hurley that the hatch was gone before he said to Desmond "So the Hatch blew off your undies." I can't remember how he found that out."

Now I have to go watch the show again. Frame by frame, if I must. If I see any black smoke puff off the bear's forehead, I am going to howl!!

And as for Hurley's comment to Des, you're right. Since Hurley was on the other side of the island with J, K & S, HOW DID HE KNOW THAT THE HATCH HAD BLOWN??

Capcom said...

Diggity, Julie also says, "That was a long time ago." as well.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but I noticed there were some similarties between Locke's hold up with Eddie and Sun's hold up with Colleen.

I was going to comment on this but after rewatching the scenes I decided not to. Eddie says to Locke, "I'm sorry Johm but you're not going to shoot me. Your not a murderer. You're a good man."

In Colleen\Connie scene she says, "No you won't Sun. I know you Sun Wok Wun, and I know you are not a killer."

At first pass I thought was another moment of deja vu, but after rewatching it seems Connie is very sure Sun won't shoot, but Eddie is not sure if Locke will shoot.

Maybe I just thought myself out of it, but I don't think they are that simiar anymore.

FYSB said...

Good points about the DI, but remember, Kelvin, an admitted member of the DI, was in that hatch pushing the button as of just a few years ago. Juliet may or may not have known about Desmond (and they sure didn't know about his boat). And just because Juliet says she's not DI anymore doesn't mean that DI doesn't exist.

DiggityDirge said...

good counter FYSB. I also got the feeling from Kelvin that he was fogotten about and his replacements never came. (i.e. something changed and he was forgotten about) In fact I think that it why the other person in the hatch killed himself.

Anyway, we'll have to see how it plays out.

Hey, Christine#2: I looked at that polar bear scene. I think you just saw the black rock. It didn't look like a puff of black smoke.

Also, it was very strange when Hurley starts to tell Desmond that Kate, Jack and Sawyer had bags put over their heads, he immediately goes into Locke's speech about rescuing them...Seems like he knew about the capture before Hurley started mentioning it (which also took quite a while before he did...it's something I would say immediately).

Thanks guys for clearing up the questions I had. I figured it was just cruddy animation. I also didn't realize that we should assume people were caught up on things off screen. Even with that said, we saw hurley left alone while Locke and Charlie walked away, and also we saw from the moment Desmond appeared to Hurley. I can't see how there could be off-screen moments where they caught up, but it's probably just a script flaw.
Maven, I agree that Desmond didn't seem too concerned or shocked when Hurley talked about the bags over K,J, and S's heads.
I also agree with people that Charlie is acting odd. I don't feel like its because he was an outsider before, but rather he seems like he has knowlege of something devious.

Melissa_Lossa and blueheron13 -

Hello, fellow Michiganders! And, yes, I was the one who got all excited about the "abduction" at Potbelly's in Troy because while that was happening I was at the dentist a mile away:)

blueheron13 - small world...you're moving to my city (St.Hgts)! I've been here almost 20 years, although I'm not originally from the Southeast MI area. I grew up in E. Lansing and I'm an MSU grad and fan. It's hard to be green in a blue neighborhood:)

bpfinn - Welcome to the world of posting! I was thinking about the Swan hatch also. When Benry says he wants Desmond's boat in the last episode....maybe he realizes that since the failsafe key was used, getting away from the island without just going in circles is possible now.

maven said...

bpfinn: Welcome to being de-lurked! Good first post, too. I would think that the Losties would miss the Swan Station. It had all the comforts of home and a good stash of goodies. No one seemed that upset about it.

Hey Y'all,

I don't know about this being this worst episode ever. There was 2 or 3 episodes in S1 that were a waste of film. I watched S1 on DVD and when I hit one of the stinky ones I had to watch 2 more too get the smell out of the room! Don't ask me which ones, for I've blocked them out of my memory. :)

Dig Y'all later

Christine said...

I feel that the loss of the Swan may have been a necessary plot detail to make the show move forward. Did you see all the Losties building houses and utensils etc. I really enjoyed Lockes coconut ladel in his sweat lodge. It almost seems that they are building their own Otherville, except that they can call it Lostieville. Now we can see them making due and excepting their fate as permanent residents of the island. I like when Charlie sent Hurley to "the kitchen" to get some bandages. So maybe they have a sort of community cafeteria set up. Sometimes I feel that we fail to notice that the Losties are to the others, as the others are to the Losties. Whenever an other might enter their town, they would most likely do exactly what the others are doing to Jack, Kate and Sawyer... making them Prisoners. So now the Losties are "the others" to the Others as well. So can we really despise the others for what they are doing, even though that is what the losties are doing as well?
I like that Boone said that Locke needed to help his family. Does that mean the Locke feels that the Losties are now his family, and he needs to protect them? Maybe Locke feels that he can redeem himself for his past wrongs by helping his new family.

Hey all- thought I would be more into the discussion, but still working on getting back into the swing of things after being out of town. Last night was hubby's birthday and we went out to eat- I totally forgot to set the recorder! Soooo unlike me- what does this say about me, am I not a dedicated LOST fan? What will all the TLCer's think of me? hehe
I watched it this afternoon on abc.com. Personally I liked this episode- but I really like the mystic and spiritual angle and was sooo glad to see the old Locke back. Don't imagine I have anything new to add right now- so I'm off to bed. Check in with you guys tomorrow!

Wow, It's taken me all morning to catch up. Well being an idiot I dowloaded the wrong episode of Lost so i'll the much berated episode 3 tonight.

Now I'm going to leave some of my comments for the podcast as I'll be recording my audio tonight. Very interesting news that Channel 4 have lost Lost to Sky 1. This will really upset a lot of people as Channel 4 is terrestrial as well as digital where as SKY 1 is cable and Satellite only.

Although I have Sky being a sad Lost addict (my wife keeps saying it's only a TV show)I will probably still download the episodes I can't stand commercials and SKY1 is really bad for commercials, I guess it'll boost Sales for Sky though.

Look forward to seeing the Dharma Inhanced Super Polar Bear (or was it the smoke monster!)

Hi AlexI don't think Locke had any interest in growing weed, all he wanted was acceptance and a sense of purpose. He found that at the commune (and they got someone who would work hard and do what he was told). He then thought that he had found the same thing on the island after the crash.

Melissa_Lossa said...

LOL Christine#2! For some reason my attention zeroed in on Locke's coconut ladle as well, and I wanted to make one. :-D

Alex, I don't get why Locke would be into an MJ farm either. To quote Hank Hill ("King of the Hill"), "Why would anyone want to do drugs, when they can just mow the lawn." :-) Hank's into his lawn.

DA, I found the UK discussions interesting! BTW, does the Sky channel have a Lost section yet like Channel4? Let us know when it does.

dark angel,

Thanks for posting the BBC news article about Sky1's purchase of Lost. The article intimates that Sky1 paid a lot for the show, then goes on to say that "Broadcast magazine reckons the firm is paying £20m." Of course, what they meant was 20E+6 pounds (20 Megapounds), but what they wrote was equivalent to 20E-3 pounds (20 millipounds), or 2p. Pretty cheap, in my book.

(There I go, being an engineer again.)

Hi, all:
Christine#2: Great observation. I wondered why the Losties didn't seem so upset about losing the hatch. We never saw that many in the hatch, did we? They were busy setting up Lostieville! How many othe "villes" are on that island? It's getting pretty crowded there. We've got urban sprawl now!

Of course, the Losties did make Ben a prisoner and treated him pretty roughly when he was captured. Tit for tat, I guess! LOL

Mountain girl: Yes, when Dwight said "The Dharma Initiative" on "The Office" last night it was so funny! (Some eastcoasters let the cat out of the bag, so I knew it was coming!). Maybe TPTB at "The Office" were paying a tribute to us since we were trying to decide if we were Dwights, Michaels, or Jim/Pams a while ago.

engineer27 said...

As the Nightline interviewer mentions in the conversation with DL and CC: The Others have yet to kill anyone. They shot Sawyer, and have certainly been cruel. But all the deaths so far (including Others) have been "accidents" (Boone, the schoolteacher), or killed by Losties (Shannon, AnaLucia, Ethan, Goodwin, Libby,....). I guess the pilot's death we've been blaming on "the smoke monster," but we don't really know who he works for yet.

True Amused, Locke better really get his caveman hunting mojo down right, and have good contingiency plans as well, in case things don't go exactly as planned. The Others always seem to be impossible for the Lostaways to predict or catch off guard and they never have backup plans. Especially considering the way that Sayid's plan seems to have failed...but we may just have seen phase one of that mission, hopefully Sayid's got more planned there.

He really does have extremely unique looks and killer eyes. His agent needs to get working on getting him more exposure as an actor while he's hot off the Lost train.

Shame on Sayid indeed, Dennis. Let's hope that phase 2 of Sayid's plan, to catch the Others on the boat, will happen. If it doesn't, tsk, tsk, Sayid must be losing his edge.

About the boat..Benry says he wants it and I'm wondering why?
