Just marking my place in the top 10...less than 45 minutes to LOST. Getting set up with my popcorn and water, tape is cued and the weather is clear...no problems with satellite tonight...

I am tingling with excitement! (I need to get a life...)

thinbluemime said...

maven, I know. Waiting is no fun. But last week I was so tired at Lost air time, I went to bed before it aired!

Heresy! I know :) But I downloaded the episode the next morning and watched it with a rested mind.

But if there ever was an addictive TV show, Lost is the "crack" of prime time.

Titanicgirl said...

Hey all!
I can't WAIT for tonight's show!

My mom hates me 'cause I read the spoilers and tell her everything(hehe).

Only a little longer...

Talk to you guys soon and enjoy the show!

Namaste!

lost time. ill see you all in an hour.

memphish said...

Eddie's wearing a Geronimo Jackson t-shirt. LOL.

memphish said...

Or is he Timothy McVeigh which is apparently Eddie's theory.

memphish said...

It's not Mr. Friendly, but boy Locke's little commune is a bit Other-like.

sean said...

what was with the deja vu?

sean said...

and that polar bear scene in the cave was the funniest.

my first reaction was "oh no! they're being attacked by an animitronic polar bear!"

sean said...

oh yeah. thanks kvonhard.

Mike V. said...

Hi everybody! Here's my theory. Desmond talked about Locke's speech, even though he didn't say it yet. I think the fail-safe made a mental connection between the two. Also, when Eko appeared to be talking to Locke, that was the island using Eko to give him 'Furhter Instructions'

sean said...

was benry at the security check at the airport? it looked like him.

FYSB said...

Ok, I'm saying it. That was hands down the worst episode ever. We got NOTHING out of it. Clearly the ABC interns graduated from TLE, got into Charlie's souvenier coke-Madonna stash and decided to write a TV show. Polar bears kidnapping Eko? Give me a break.

sean said...

the implosion may have given desmond special powers. he was the closest to the electromagnetic field than anyone else was.

sean said...

kvonhard said...
As a last note, I have to say - as a girl, disappointed. I was waiting for Desmond in a thong for a few weeks. Not nearly what I thought it would be brotha...

i guess you have to wait for the lost: unrated and uncensored DVD.

sean said...

we also dont know what happened between locke and eddie.

btw-wasnt eddie in war of the worlds?

sean said...

exactly, lockebox.

sean said...

it wasnt the first time locke had a vision of boone. remember in S!?
locke saw boone right before boone died in a vision.

Mike V. said...

sean - Lost girls gone wild? Claire's preggo boobs?

sean said...

i thought so, lostfanatic.
it seems familiar. i think we have seen him there before.

FYSB said...

Crossfade, I'll give you a tie on the worst two.

sean said...

lost gone wild hopefully with kate and shannon.

sean said...

right. admins will have to open up a new thread for lost: uncensored talk.

Mike V. said...

Meh. Then this will cross it. Three words. Hurley. Gone. Wild.

sean said...

ill be back in about 15 minutes. hopefully you will all still be here.

sean said...

LostinFrogurt: that will give me nightmares.

Mike V. said...

I'm sorry, you guys, but that was necessary. Besides, Hurley's got boobs. How about this. Dead Lost girls gone wild? The best of Shannon, Libby, and Ana Lucia.

Capcom said...

FYSB! If nothing else, we got a nekkid Desmond! After all the shots the guys get, we got something this week for a change.

Anyway, whew, by my VCR's recording count, we only got 36 minutes and a few seconds of show tonight. I fell cheated. Except for the nekkid.........I need to watch that again. :-)

FYSB said...

capcom, you are so right. the shallow randy part of me delighted in nekkid Desmond. it made that hour very worthwhile.

now the tiny little part of me that thinks about plot and story development, is not nearly so satisfied.

Black Swan said...

My first impression on this epi, I have to agree with fysb.....

Black Swan said...

That is I agree with fysb: "That was hands down the worst episode ever."

Capcom said...

I agree FYSB, because probably half of that 36 minute ep was flashbacks that we could have done without till later, for the most part. I'm tired of learning why Locke is such a dope. OK, so he is, and now he is redeeming himself, yay. I want more island adventure action.

sean said...

i dont think it was the worst EVER. remember last season in charle's spisode. the one where he got punched by locke in the end? i trhought that episode was worse.

Ange said...

Episode no good? Woah! Okay...
1. We finally get to see that they are okay from the hatch implosion.
2. We now know the polar bears are really real and not a hallucination.
3. Locke is communicating with the island again.
4. BOONE!
5. Something is up with Desmond, whether he is seeing the future I don't know, but he knew about that speech, no doubt, and then seemed to try to cover.
6. New people!!!???
I guess I need to watch again, but it was good to see everyone again, and not just Jack, Kate, and Sawyer. Also, for the record I am still with Dark Angel and think Jack is going to join the Others. I feel like it was Jack yelling in the previews, but as I said...need to watch again.

sean said...

lockebox, that was really the "gigli" of lost.

FYSB said...

I am certainly willing to consider other candidates for Worst.Ep.Ever, but if you make a submission, you must prove why it is worse than the faux-priest-kidnapping-polar-bear-who-prefers-human-flesh-to -boarorwhateverthatanimalwas.

sean said...

ana-lucia was unfortunately the closest thing we had to j-lo.

Ange said...

jgz- "Polar bears are like the Einsteins of the bear community."

FYSB said...

hmmm...jgz350, good question...is eko more tasty to a smart bear because he's philosophical?

sean said...

eddie seemed to be a little young to be a cop. last year, in war of the worlds, he played a 15 year old.

Mike V. said...

Hey guys, I missed about 5 minutes of show, due to unavoidable circumstance. Can anyone fill me in on the part right after locke charaded with Charlie? How did he get his voice back?

Ange said...

jgz- Nature shows...Charlie watched nature shows...hehehe;)

Mike V. said...

"When I used to get high, I would watch nature shows on the beeb." Beeb. Beeb. Beebeebeeb. The Beebeesee. Lol. Kinda hyper for no reason. I loved the visionquest episode. How we thought shannon was gone for good but then it makes a comeback. Meh.

sean said...

LostinFrogurt, his voice just kinda kame back. locke got out of the tent, and just talked.
i dont even know how he lost his voice in the first place.

sean said...

great. i spelled "came" wrong.

Capcom said...

Capcom said...

Very interesting Crossfade.

I think I'm just upset because we only got approx 18 minutes of island time. I thought we'd get more. Like someone said a while ago, at this rate, in season 5 we'll still be in the first few months on the island.

It was good seeing Boone again, all cleaned up. When I saw his name in the opening creds it was like old times.

Re: Kate's being forced to say she loves Sawyer....it doesn't count if someone forces you to say that you love them. T'will be interesting.

Tess315 said...

I agree jgz350.
I actually found the episode very entertaining. I was starting to get concerned with myself because for the first 15 or 20 minutes I kept laughing. I mean Locke getting hit with the stick and his and Charlie's onesided conversation and the poetic justice of Boone being his spiritual guide after what he did to him. I liked it, no there wasn't alot of answers but I don't need answers in every episode. I am wondering if Eko will make it or not. I thought near the end he was dead.

"ok: one more quick comment:
Locke's lost voice is kinda familiar with the biblical story of Zacharias. He disobeyed Gabriel (who had sent a message from God) and was not allowed to speak until what Gabriel told Zacharias was to happen, happened.
Luke 1:5-29 & 57-80."

Hey, Crossfade, I was reminded of that very same story! Great minds think alike!

One correction: Zacharias was made mute by the angel Gabriel because he DISBELIEVED the prophecy, not because he "disobeyed".

Also, Zacharias was a high priest in the Temple of God, and should have known better than to question Gabriel's prophecy. He was punished for NOT DEMONSTRATING FAITH. Sound familiar?

Oddly enough, the prophecy was that Zacharias & Elizabeth, an elderly couple, would give birth to a son. A son named John. (In real life, this son became John the Baptist. In our 'Lost' world, in a convoluted way, we have John the Locke. Lol!)

Sorry...no disrespect intended...

Just got finished watching. Have to agree with a lot of you...kinda disappointing. Didn't really learn too much. So Locke feels mega-guilty about not believing Eko. Big surprise! (she says sarcastically)

Some dumb things: So there's this big EMP, a hatch door lands on the beach...Locke, Eko, Desmond, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Hurley haven't been seen since. Locke comes waltzing in and doesn't draw a curious crowd? Come on! Only Charlie and Clair notice him? A little unbelieveable for me. And Locke doesn't tell anyone that he saw Desmond running through the jungle.

The only interesting thing for me was the deja vu thing with Desmond talking about Locke's speech before he gave it. Hurley's realization was priceless!

So the Polar Bear cave is where DI people have met their death. Was there a logo on that DI knapsack? I didn't notice one. The Tonka dumb truck was an indication that children had been around.

I really didn't get Locke's flashback. When was he supposed to be working on the pot farm? Couldn't really tell if it was before or after the thing with his father. Although he didn't want to talk about his family to Eddie. The Geronimo Jackson t-shirt was a nice touch...interesting that he says it belonged to his father.

Was the episode really only 36 minutes! Come on TPTB, we only have 6 episodes here...fill them up!

Well, at least the spiritual Locke is back.

Next week's previews look way more "Lost-y". Why do they want Kate to say she loves Saywer?

Hi, Maven! I finally figured out how to post my kitty Mr. Peanut's pic to my blog. I've been wanting to do it ever since I first saw your adorable kitty!

Not that this has anything to do with Lost...

Friday's_Child said...

Hey, why is my pic so tiny??

Thanks, tbm, for that screenshot. I was wondering what that part of the stick said. "Lift up your eyes and look north" John 3:05. Interesting, how, indeed would one do that? Lying down? And what's north?

maven said...

Fridays child: Congrats (took me a long time to figure out how to post an avatar pic, too!) Mr. Peanuts and Pumpkin could be brothers! (Ever notice how most cats in commercials are orange tabbies?) Not that this has anything to fo with LOST!

Hey, nightmaremommie, long time no see.

I don't know what you're talking about. I didn't notice anything unusual.

Back to the topic of Lost: Yes, I too saw the DI Pearl Station logo on the floor of the polar bear's cave. My impression was that it had been drawn in the dirt...by the polar bear??

I need to watch that episode again.

There were sure a lot of mentions of drugs in this episode:
Locke worked on a pot farm
Charlie talking about Locke confronting him about using heroin again
Locke's hallucinagenic paste

Friday's_Child said...

Nightmare mommie,

I just went and replayed that part at the end of the taped show, and watched it four times, and no, I never saw any odd frame pop up.

My digital cable company is flakey too!

maven said...

Wasn't the Pearl Station logo on the knapsack on the cave floor? Then the camera pans to a close-up to a skull with what looks like a broken jaw.

Friday's_Child said...

Maven, you asked, "In the airport scene...wonder why Locke saw Desmond as being the pilot flirting with the flight attendents? "

My impression, upon seeing him strutting with the stews, was of that movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio where he impersonated an airline pilot. The point being that he was a fake and a fraud.

Is a hint being dropped by TPTB that Desmond is a fake? Hmmm...

maven said...

Good point, friday's child. Come to think of it, the stews seemed dressed ala 70's. They didn't look like the stews from Ocean Flight 815. Although, Desmond still had his long hair.

It's getting late for me...will sleep on this and hopefully have new thoughts tomorrow. Night all.

Friday's_Child said...

Oh, geez, I just had the strangest thought pop into my head. In previous comments, someone wondered why Desmond was the only one who had his clothes blown off. Someone else mentioned his nudity as being a form of 'rebirth'.

What if Desmond IS a fake Desmond, and is naked as only a newly created (cloned) being would be?

Desmond seemed to be a bit spacey, and how odd that he mentioned Locke's speech before Locke even spoke it.

Naaahh...my imagination's running too wild!

Also, I was puzzled by seeing the hatch as imploded. If it imploded, then WHY was the hatch door (the one marked 'Quarantine') blown clear down to the beach? Obviously, some force blew it outwards, not inwards.

Do any of you guys understand more about the physics of explosions?

Bring back our Research Blog people, quick!

Friday's_Child said...

G'Night all!

Hi Guys,

Haven't seen the episode yet or read the transcript (Just what is on wikipedia), ahame most people were'nt impressed with the episodes.

I like the idea of Desmond being the new Jack. One think that caught my attention was that Eko and the Polar Bear is another incident of black and white we keep seeing in lost.

Anyway catch you all later

DiggityDirge said...

Hey all,

I thought this was another good epi. I think they left some stuff out due to time. (maybe someone should cut back on the commercials) Here's some things I thought were interesting. I'm sure I am not the first to mention them:

1. Locke's Vision: Seemed to accurately portray everyone on the island's situation. Claire & Charlie back together, Jack being secured by Benry, Sun & Jin fighting with Sayid, Hurley working for someone (the others), Kate & Sawyer flirting, and Desmond taking care of himself. Seemed to really reflect that Locke messed up and cannot fix anything until he fixed the problems he caused.

2. Locke again is the eternal con. The line about the pysch profile reflecting Locke could be duped was priceless. He seems to fall for every con that's gets thrown at him.

3. Desmond can see the future. That was trippy as hell. For a few minutes I was totally confused until Locke gave his speech. Then my boy Hurley was classic. Just a little deja vu.

PS - Loved the "Dude" line when Locke threw the knife at Hurley's canteen.

4. Shout out to Humboldt County and potheads everywhere. Hilarious that Locke worked on a pot farm for a bunch of hippies. People are all worked up that Eddie was looking for more than pot, but they missed the "fresh out of the academy" photo that said Humboldt County Sherriff.

To drop a little stoner knowledge for those who don't know, Humboldt County is world famous for growing, distributing, supporting, and smoking some of the best pot in the US. Eddie wws definetely on a pot bust, but he under estimated the hippies. (classic non-stoner mistake...hippies are smart) 420 anyone??

5.Disappointing Hurley. I was kind of bumbed Hurley was so mellow about the prisoner situation and that he wasn't going nuts about Michael being a killer, and him & Walt leaving on a boat. Was a bit bummed with my boy.

Anyway, looking forward to comments tonight and tomorrow.

Christine said...

Hi everyone, I am going to watch that episode again, but I agree, it wasn't my favorite either. There is something odd about the fluidity of the show, like missing pieces, or missing time. An example I have is Hurley leaving and going back to the beach. Would he not have gotten there sooner than Locke, Eko, and Charlie? Why didnt he say something to everyone else before Locke did? I mean if Desmond and Hurley came back to the beach.. why wouldnt the other people ask where everyone else was, and why desmond was half naked. This episode has left me very confused. Either it is poor story-line/writing, or something is missing.

Chris Procter said...

It seems to me that TPTB might have had to make up for the lost advertising revenue due to the new format by cramming more commercials in. Also remember that we are getting extended editions of the episode after the season 3 finale.

I agree that it seems Desmond can see things in the future or something. I have been thinking on this, and the clone idea has been thrown out there. However, what if Desmond has always been a bit Calirvoyant, and that fact wasn't shared with us. Maybe he hid it well, or he didn't recognize his ability until the hatch implosion. Maybe he is a bit confused after his ordeal and has inadvertently given up the fact that he has this power (per his trying to cover in his conversation with Hurley). I dunno, I just think that was a really interesting little bit to throw in there.

Chris Procter said...

I like the clone idea in fact I had a big clone theory back in Season 1 but clones and cloning technology has been pretty firmly refuted by TPTB

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!

The American Express Exclusives site has been updated. You can log-in using: Rachel Blake / 888-258-3741

I have uploaded the photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lostchibbie/sets/72157594335536093/detail/

The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LEadBKmjY8

Here are the questions from the AMEX Exclusives site:

No Game of Charades: Locke mimes to Charlie that he needs to talk to the island. How can an island "talk" to someone? Has Locke been affected by the hatch implosion?
Going on a Vision Quest: Locke builds a sweat lodge and makes Charlie stand guard while he tries to find answers to his questions. What does it all mean?
Old Friend, Old Enemy: Boone appears and invites Locke to come with him to see something. Why does Locke have to be in the wheelchair?
And Baby Makes Three: Locke spots Charlie, Claire and baby Aaron in line at the airport. Boone says they'll be fine - for a little while. What's going to happen to them?
What's in the Bag?: Sun and Jin seem to be arguing as they stand in line at the airport. Is it about the package?
Insecurity Check Point: The man Locke knows as Henry Gale is screening Jack, Kate and Sawyer at a checkpoint. Why can't Locke help Jack, Kate and Sawyer yet?
Clean Up Your Own Mess: Locke reaches the top of a flight of stairs, where he finds Boone and a clue about Mr. Eko. Why is Boone telling Locke to clean up his own mess?
You're Not Safe With Me: Fearing for Charlie, Locke doesn't want Charlie to help him rescue Mr. Eko. Why do bad things happen to people who hang around Locke?
One of My Dad's Old Shirts: Eddie, a hitchhiker Locke picked up, appears to be a fan of Geronimo Jackson. Wasn't there a copy of one of their albums in the hatch?
The Remains of the Hatch: Charlie and Locke at the location of the hatch - or what once was the hatch. What happened to the hatch?
Toys in the Bears' Lair: Locke tracks Mr. Eko to a bears' den, where he discovers a child's yellow toy truck. How did that get there?
A Spy in Their Midst: Eddie turns out to be a member of law enforcement, earning Locke the wrath of his marijuana-growing friends.
Polar Bears and the Pearl Station: In the bear cave, Locke discovers human bones and a familiar logo. Did the bear eat a Pearl Station Dharma employee or two?
Desmond's Deja Vu: A naked Desmond tells Hurley not to worry - Locke's going after Jack, Kate and Sawyer. Is Desmond just confused because of the hatch implosion?
A Hunter or a Farmer?: Under the guise of a hunting trip, Locke confronts Eddie about being set up. Why was Locke chosen as a point of opportunity?

when Locke first walked into the polar bear cave was there someone in the cave off to the right against the wall

CattyGirl said...

I am enjoying reading the comments here more than last night's show. oh well...

What did I find most interesting about the episode?

The toy truck in the bear's cave. Yep. For some reason this image sticks out the most for me.

I am wondering why the bears are roaming the island. I am thinking they would rather kill/eat people than wild animals because they were experimented, caged, tortured to some extent by people.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Good morning, all! Work has been killer, so I haven't been able to post here at all. :(

Last night's episode wasn't my favorite - especially Locke's flashbacks. I don't feel like we really learned anything, and it seemed unfinished. There were some great moments, though, including some great quotes. Charlie had some great lines, my favorite being: "Are you taking drugs, John? I only ask because of the strict zero tolerance policy you've enacted. I wouldn't want you to have to start punching yourself in the face."

I re-watched the 2nd season finale a couple of weeks ago, and I was struck by how oddly Charlie acts. I saw it a little bit in this episode as well. At times, he almost seems to have a hidden agenda.

And about Desmond's new powers - I don't think that they are new at all. When he mentions Locke's speech and Hurley asks what speech, it seems like Des would have said, "that speech he made earlier," if he didn't realize that he was having visions. He seemed to jump right in with "oh, I'm just a bit mixed up," like he realized that he had slipped. Although, if Des could always see the future, it would have been helpful if he had forseen the whole incident with Kelvin!

Melissa_Lossa said...

cattygirl - I agree, that Tonka truck was a little disturbing. Maybe we'll find out that the Others have been sacrificing their children to the island. That's why there aren't any in their village.

If Des is Odysseus, then maybe Ben is Agamemnon - he sacrificed his own daughter to ensure smooth sailing to Troy.

engineer27 said...

Good Morning...afternoon...evening, depending upon where in the world you are...

Did anyone else notice that Eko has carved The Numbers into his scripture stick? If he had those on there before he first arrived at the Swan station, it might explain his apparent reverence for their significance and the station itself.

Chris Procter said...

Mmmn I don't think normal bears (polar or otherwise) have the ability to hold a grudge outside Hollywood they are just very efficient seal hunters but then of course these if these are Dharma-Inhanced Super Bears then anything is possible I guess.

engineer27 said...

FYI, the verse that is quoted, "Lift up your eyes..." is from Genesis 13:14 (the reference is also carved into the stick).

The full verse is
The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, "Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west.

Thrasher76 said...

Okay, Top 200 Yay!!!

That was an awesome episode!!! I have been in one of those tents before. My family history has been traced to american indian backrounds and while I was in Mexico there was an Indian/Mayan experience that did. A shaman cleanses your mind body and spirit and let me tell you it gets real hot in those tents and you do begin to see "things".

How is it that Desmond was able to know about Lockes speech?

Thrasher76 said...

Fridays Child had asked earlier about the hatch door that fell from the sky in last seasons finale. I said it then and I still beleive it to be true that the door that fell and stuck in the sand was pulled down from the sky. As if they really are in a "fish bowl" of sorts and the hatch imploding pulled the door off and onto the beach. No one else felt this way as far as I can remeber, but that is just MHO.

Thrasher76 said...

One more thing......Optimus Prime is back!!!! I know you all missed him!!

engineer27 said...

Regarding the Hatch implosion...in order for the large structure to compress down into something that small, all the air inside it would have to be expelled at some point. Depending upon how quicly the collapse occurred, that expulsion could have quite a bit of force behind it, enough to blow the hatch "quarantine" door all the way to the beach. All sorts of other things could have been expelled along with the air -- Locke, Eko, Desmond, Eko's scripture stick, some Apollo bars, etc. My guess is that anything non-ferromagnetic could have been thrown clear. It could be that Desmond's Dharma clothes contain ferromagnetic particles as EM shielding, which would explain why they weren't thrown clear along with him.

engineer27 said...

DA- yes, Dharma-enhanced super-polars.

How else could they survive the tropical climate?

Why would DI experiment with Polar bears instead of some other kind? As Charlie said, "the Einsteins of the Bear community".

Hmmmm. "The Bear Community". Has a ring to it. Blogspot, anyone?

CattyGirl said...

DA- Gosh, when you put it that way it makes me sound a little crazy. Not so much a grudge, but... I was just thinking in the terms of abused pets. ex. Dogs needing rehabilitation if they were beaten/abused by their owners. Some are afraid and some become vicious toward people... That was my thought process with these bears.

Melissa_Lossa said...

engineer27 - I like the idea that Desmond's clothes contained something magnetic. Makes sense, if you're going to be underground next to a big magnet for months (and eventually years), you'd want to protect yourself from overexposure - especially your... erm... manhood. Maybe Des was wearing magnetic drawers!

That would explain why he was the only naked one, aside from the obvious rebirth theories.

CattyGirl said...

Melissa - I'm glad you brought up Charlie's lines, because I found them to be a highlight of the show.

I think he is in conflict with himself. The old Charlie wanted to help and be someone's sidekick. Then a time passed where everyone was against Charlie. Now I think that although he knows he has been wronged by these people, his true self is to be a part of the group and help. He makes many bitter, smart remarks, and I am loving every one of them. I am still on his side. ;) I have been with Charlie since the beginning. Was there a time we were not suppose to feel for him? oops - I missed that.

Engineer27 you beat me to the implosion /explosion idea - I had typed it out and then blogger ate my comments, but suffice to say I agree.

Thrasher/Optimus I am with you on the Sweat Lodge thing. I have not been in a sweat lodge but have used similar (legal and drug free) techniques, really hot chillis work as well! It reminds me of one of my favorite Simpsons episodes where Homer eats the insanity chilli and goes on a vision quest to meet his spirit guide Coyote :)

Cattygirl Yes, I suppose that the bears could have learn't to see humans as a threat rather than just mobile meat and would therefore be more likely to attack them.

I wonder why the bear dragged Eko off though and didn't just kill him. Maybe he was really a nice bear and was going to try to nurse Eko back to health, just as he had with previous people just being a bear he (or is it she) isn't very good at the medical care side :P

engineer27 said...

The idea behind them showing us the freshly killed boar was to indicate that normal behavior for these bears is to injure their prey so that it cannot run away, then leave it for a while to "ripen", then come back and have a polar feast.

Same thing with Eko.

I wonder if they leave their kill to go off for ice cold Coca-Cola?

that would make sense, not normal Polar Bear behaviour but then these are not normal Polar Bears. I must admit I haven't seen the episode yet so I miss bits like that.

Morning (for me) all:

Engineer27: The island Polar Bear is definitely not as cute as the Coca-Cola bears! Good point about the bear injurying their prey first. Was the boar dead though?

Re Desmond: Locke's vision has Desmond as the pilot flirting with the flight attendents. I really don't know how that ties in with Desmond as the almost "wild man" running thru the jungle nakes and his clairvoyance now. The best moment of the show was Hurley and his deja vu moment!

The Tonka truck was a very poignant moment. Tonka has been around since 1964. That truck didn't look that rusted out. Children were on that island not too long ago.

One thing that bothered me most about the episode was how "calm" everyone was about what was happening. The hatch implodes...a door lands on the beach. Hurley, Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Desmond, Eko, Locke haven't been seen in days. Locke comes waltzing in and only Charlie and Claire talk to him. Hurley is too laid back about J/S/K being captured. (Wouldn't you go running back and screaming about what has happened?) No one is that upset about not having the hatch anymore...wasn't there a food stash there?...where are they going to get their Apollo Bars?

Ange said...

I posted earlier about a theory I have about Desmond and his new "powers". To add to that, WHAT IF something DONE to Desmond. He was the only one without clothing that was in the hatch before/during the implosion. Both Eko and Locke have their clothes. Maybe Des has been somewhere/or was taken somewhere and has no memory of it.

Very nice take on Locke's vision. It shows Claire and Charlie as a happy family (although Boone implys something is going to happen there), Ben as Security Guard in charge of Jack getting through security (even having to take off his watch -- time standing still?) Sun and Jin arguing with Sun carrying a large bag (metaphor for her pregnancy -- what's in the bag/who's the father?), Sayid being involved with Sun and Jin, Hurley working for Oceanic, Kate and Sawyer behind Jack in their own little world, and Desmond as the pilot with the flight attendants strutting self-assuredly through the airport.

BTW: Welcome back Optimus Prime!

Melissa_Lossa said...

cattygirl - I agree about Charlie. He has this real need to take care of people, he's just not quite sure how.

I also think maybe he was a little hurt, as he started out as Locke's sidekick and was then replaced by Boone. Now, even though he doesn't like Locke anymore, he still has that need to be accepted, like a little kid looking for approval. Sadly, last night, just as he was back in his sidekick role with Locke, who shows up? Boone!

Everyone on this show ALWAYS seems calm when disaster strikes. Deaths are forgotten fairly quickly and even last season when the hatch exploded and Des, Locke and Eko were no where to be seen, no one seemed that concerned.

It gives the island a very surreal feeling, in my opinion.

I think sometimes you get to a point where you just don't care enough to get all exicited. Many years ago I did survival training on a tiny island off the west coast of Scotland. We were basically left to fend for yourself, it's amazing how lathargic and apathetic you can come in a very short period of time. I think as well you can only take so much excitement before you almost become numb to it.

maven said...

Thanks, diggitydirge.

I was also wondering when Locke's flashback took place. Was it before or after the Helen/Dad stuff? He told Eddie he didn't want to talk about his family, but I got the feeling it was before the Dad/Helen flashbacks. He seemed younger here. Thoughts?

(Have to go out for a few hours...bbl!)

DarkAngel: Thanks for your input about how lethargic one gets in a survival situation. Not having been through that, I have no real idea how one's mind works. Just coming from an everyday point of view, everyone's reactions to stressful situations on the island seems entirely too laid back.

Friday's_Child said... Also, I was puzzled by seeing the hatch as imploded. If it imploded, then WHY was the hatch door (the one marked 'Quarantine') blown clear down to the beach? Obviously, some force blew it outwards, not inwards.

The place they were standing is where the door used to be - where the ladder tunnel was that Lock and Boone found (not the "front" door). When the rooms below exploded, the force went up the chute and blew it out like a volcano, creating a similar crater. The hatch door was laying on the ground, next to the tunnel, so all that earth got blown into the sky, like lava.

Some random comments:

The Toy Truck - I wasn't sure what that was supposed to be, even after seeing it twice. I didn't realize it was a toy truck. I thought it was the "button" computer.

About the toy truck. Haven’t we seen one of those before, probably in someone's flashback? The first one that comes to mind is Charlie, at the beginning of his tripped out flashback ep. (I never remember episode names...sorry) Not that it really matters, because it's probably unrelated, but as soon as I saw that truck I started thinking I'd seen it before. (And I don't have brothers...so it wasn't from my own childhood.)

Big props to my Humboldt County friends, even if the hippies that Lock was living with were a bit foolish and full of themselves. (Last time I checked no respectable hippy would build a greenhouse that obvious and out in the open. The law scans the forest from above out there. I'm going to assume it was for effect. I know I saw that greenhouse and immediately thought 420.) And thank god we might have actually found something about Lock that isn't him being a victim. His dad targeted him; Johnny 5-0 targeted him...but at least the second time he was wound up in something illegal. Yay for the scumbags, criminals, and thieves, you may now call Lock one of your own...finally...maybe......

k.barrick said...

"Dude" was definitely the best part of the episode for me... why you might ask, because I had said the same word 5 seconds before Hurley uttered it.

BTW, I'm hearing a lot of frustration from LOST fans about the show. Knowing the "Criminal Minds" is close to beating LOST in the ratings (as of LAST week... who knows about last night), there needs to be some reshuffling of the deck in regards to story structure.

Also, a lot of people (internet people) are saying that "HEROES" right now is what LOST should be. Folks, I really DO like "HEROES." Especially because Greg Grunberg wasn't killed off in the first two hours.

Just food for thought.

ib4uc said...

I think the eternal problem that the LOST creators have manufatcured is they can never give enough answers to satisfy the masses. I am completely satisfied with the current format where we get a nugget here and there, and speculate often. That's part of the mystery to me. Just when I think I have something figured out, something different happens to kill my theory. I can see how people who have watched for three years are getting frustrated that the show continues to pile up questions with very few answers. Be patient. I expect the payoff to be worth it.

One change I could live with is cutting about 100 commercials per epi. I am also bummed that the Official LOST podcast has been hit and miss this year.

As Dennis said, I always considered my weekly LOST homework to be the forums, summaries on various sites, the official podcast, etc. I miss the re-hash and post-hash moments. There were always some good nuggets of info in there.

Illumination on the time period for the Locke flashback...

The service date on officer Colburn's record is 1994. Since Locke's friends mentioned that he was right out of the academy, the events in the flashback could not be later than 1996.

Someone else can do the homework on when the other flashbacks with his father occur. I'm guessing that they are before the events in "Further Instructions," since Locke still needs to get hired by the box company and get into his wheelchair between 1996 and 2004, so he might not have time to squeeze in a whole ill-fated romance and a criminal intrigue with his presumed-dead father.

There you go...Dennis got it. My question is this. Why go on a vision quest at all? Lock saw Desmond walk past him before he stood up, he knew that at least one other person survived the implosion, why not just start looking for Echo. I think at the beginning, before the quest, he thought Echo was dead. I don't think he was intending to go look for Echo at all. I think he wanted to talk to the island because he's totally lost at this point, and he thought the island would give him some sort of direction, as it did when he found the button. But I don't think he thought it would send him after Echo.

I'll say it as well:

My first impression is that this was probably the worst Lost episode ever. In any case, this is the most disappointed I've ever been after watching the show. I've gotta rant a little here and get it out of my system. In no particular order, these things bothered me:

1. The editing was horrible. It was clear that scenes were deleted throughout the episode. I know TPTB are saving scenes for the extended edition reruns, but there were so many cuts it was ridiculous. So much for meeting the two new characters (which was referenced in ABC's description of the episode). And there were at least two scenes I saw in previews over the weekend that didn't even make it on to the show.

2. Charlie's character: At the end of Season 2, he acts all spaced out. At the beginning of this episode, he's mean and unsympathetic, showing no apparent interest or concern at all about what happened to Eko, Desmond, or Locke. Then, without explanation, he's off in the jungle following Locke like an obedient dog. I have no emotional investment in this character at all right now.

3. Locke's behavior on the Island, part I: So, let's see, Locke wakes up after the incident, and what does he do? Find out what happened to Charlie, Eko, and Desmond? Or maybe investigate what happened to the hatch? No, of course not - it's time to immediately build a sweat lodge and experience hallucinations instead! Makes no sense to me.

4. Locke's behavior on the Island, part II: And since when does Locke view himself as a leader of the Losties, even going as far as to call them "our people". Locke has certainly helped out the survivors from time to time, but mostly on a one-on-one basis, and his primary concern has always been finding his own destiny. Since when has he developed a conscience about what happens to the group as a whole?

5. Locke in the flashback scenes: We've seen Locke as a mild-mannered toy store employee, as a mild-mannered box company employee, as a mild-mannered home inspector, as a mild-mannered son looking for a father figure, and as a confused angry man in a relationship with Helen. Somehow, all these things fit together. But now we see a multiple-gun-toting, law-breaking, drug-growing, hippie Locke? How does this fit with his character? The Locke in this flashback does not fit in with the Locke we've seen at any other time, in my opinion.

6. The polar bear: Worst special effects on the show to date. Laughably bad. Except that it wasn't meant to be a funny scene.

7. The script: These are some great actors - give them some good lines. When the best line in the entire episode is "Dude!" - that's a problem.

8. And what's with Hurley? Why ISN'T he all ready to burst with all the information he has to tell everyone. He was so mellow, even for him.

9. And why doesn't anyone on the beach seem to care at all about the hatch (and food and shower)being gone, and the strange behavior of the hatch survivors as they wander back? Makes no sense.

10. The Boone/airport scene was too bizarre. Although what he was saying was interesting - foreshadowing, I suppose.

11. I really hope they don't get carried away with this Desmond super-powers thing. Desmond's character was riveting in Live Together, Die Alone. I can't imagine why the TPTB would change it.

OK, that's out of system.

I can see why they switched the order of this episode and The Glass Ballerina. I think they new they had a stinker on their hands and didn't want to place it second in the season lineup. What a shame, especially after two very outstanding episodes. Hopefully, the show will be back to its normal good form next week.

I guess every season has to have at least one stinker of an episode, right?

Dennis said...

I found the polar bear simply ridiculous. As for Locke communing with the island, was it the island's idea to take out a two thousand pound bear with a can of AquaNet or did Locke come up with that one on his own?

Funny talking about hairspray, but it reminds me of that seemingly throwaway line in the first episode about there being no combs or brushes on the island.

Haven't seen this mentioned yet... did anyone else notice that when Locke came flying out of the sweatlodge that it appeared that the door was the mouth of an animal (possibly a bear)? It happened so quick -- maybe I was hallucinating.

Melissa_Lossa said...

blueheron - where in Michigan are you from? I think you're the first fellow-Michiganian that I've seen on here! And you're right - I thought Central as well. I was all excited there for a minute. :)

As far as the sweatlodge goes, I think that Locke had lost his way. He was so sure about the island and his destiny that he was willing to sacrifice Boone. Boone even reminded him of that last night when he repeated Locke's line that he was a sacrifice that the island demanded. Once he saw that video in the Pearl station, his certainty was destroyed and he felt that he'd been played AGAIN. Last night, after discovering that the hatch was real, that it had all been real, Locke had to find a way to recapture his believes, thus reconnecting with his destiny. Boone gave him a hint at his new destiny in his vision - rescuing Kate, Sawyer and Jack. But first, he had to atone for his loss of faith by facing the polar bear and rescuing Eko.

While I find it strange that someone in his position wouldn't immediately try to find the other people from the hatch explosion, I do not find it strange for Locke. We've already seen that he can be completely blinded by his faith - this was just one more example.

Aradia said...

ib4uc - I did notice. at first I thought it was a wolf, then I thought it must be the bear. I have to go back and look tonight.

did anyone get a screen capture of Echo's stick when Boon holds it up in the dream sequence. It said something other than scripture on it...but I couldn't read that fast. I can wait till I watch it again tonight, but I thought I'd ask.

Melissa_Lossa said...

ib4uc - yeah there was a polar bear growl when he came out of the sweatlodge. I think that's how he knew what he was up against so quickly.

Capcom said...

Great discussion and comments everyone, as usual! I really look forward to reading them on Thursdays now!

I agree that Locke had to go into the sweatlodge to clear his head and find out where to look for Eko. Eko could have been blown anywhere on the island, and Locke needed to get his hunting/tracking skills back and sharpened. I really liked that TPTB put the sweatlodge/indian lore in the story.

Perhaps it was the zippers in Desmond's jumpsuit that were metallic enough to get blown off in the blast?

After watching this Ep over a number of times (easy, with only 20 min island time, if you FF past the flashbacks) I have to say that this is one of the funniest. Charlie's comments (especially telling Locke he might have to punch himself in the face a few times), the looks on Boone's face during the sweatlodge conversation(priceless!), and of course Hurley-man, were just killer!

BTW, if Locke is trusting hippies by 1994, maybe he does need some shrink therapy! And I am a bit disappointed in him to be involved in something like growing illegal junk. Hmmm. Maybe a product of the aftermath with his father, if that's where it fits in on the timeline.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I read somewhere that Eko's staff had the numbers carved into it. Maybe that's what you saw?

And I agree about Boone - I think he sounded cold because of Locke's guilt over his death. Because he feels guilty, in his mind, Boone is cold and a little cruel. Boone also represents the island itself, which is punishing him for his lack of faith.

Melissa_Lossa said...

capcom - I agree, this must be after the whole thing with Helen and his father. Locke mentions working through his anger. I think this might have also been Locke's way of trying to prove to himself that he wasn't the sap that everyone took him for. I mean, who hasn't gone through a rough patch in their life and rebelled? I think this was Locke's way of saying, "So, my dad thinks he can just walk all over me? Well, now I'm a hunter and a drug dealer and a killer!" Eddie ruins it for him at the end by saying that he was the easiest to coerce and that he is only a farmer. I'm guessing that after this, Locke's spirit is broken and he goes to work at the box company.

Capcom said...

BlueHeron: your #10 -- that was my first thought, "Dang, no more showers and toilet paper now!"

As much as I prefer the show to have more island-time than flashbacks, I did like the vision quest hallucination. What Boone said was pretty telling and maybe how TPTB wanted to give us some answers or clues to answers.

here's what wikipedia has to say about the versus:

-"lift your eyes and look north"
-acts 4: 12: "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
-gen 13: 14: "The LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward."
-rom 6: 12: "Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof."
-john 3: 5: "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God."

One more for you...

Yes. He was in the wheelchair. That's why his boss was making fun of him for wanting to go on a Walk-About.

I've placed the flashback between 10/1997 and 11/1998. There is a screencap of Locke's driver's license, vehicle registration and gun registration. On the vehicle registration, the valid registration date starts on 10/20/97. I believe in CA the registraion is good for one year.

I'm not sure where that falls in the whole Helen/Dad timeline.

Also in the paperwork, Locke's DOB, ZIP code, etc...

Hey, guys: It's interesting to me that Locke was always protrayed as very anti-drug...trying to get Charlie off the heroin and constantly doubting him. And then it turns up that he worked on a pot farm!

melissa lossa: Yes, the series of job we see Locke in after (I'm assuming) the pot farm are very establishmemt: box company and house inspector.

I found another preview for next weeks episode so only if you want to be a little spoiled:

diggity - We don't see him in the wheelchair at the box company, but he tells his co-workers there that he has bought his ticket to the walkabout and his boss is in complete disbelief that Locke thinks that he can do it.

I think we can assume that he is in the chair then, we just don't see it because he is sitting at a table in that scene. And that's because the writers wanted the big reveal in Australia. :)

DiggityDirge said...

thanks Melissa. I was just pulling out my Season 1 dvd's because I dint' think he was in the wheelchair either?

Dennis, are you positive or guessing?

Interestingly in that screen capture - Locke's birthdate on the form is given as 11/15/46, but on his liscense, it says 5/30/56.

Looks like maybe his registration that is dated 10/20/97 - if that's the case, this would be set sometime in the year before 10/20/97.

Melissa - it would be interesting to find out when Terry O'Quin's birthday is. Usually props would create a new drivers license if it was going to be on camera, but it's easier to use an actor’s old driver’s license especially if the actor has one from the correct state.

Thanks Dennis and all. Thanks also for the preview post Cattygirl!

Mountain Girl - I saw. That just strikes me as weird. The license also expires in '02. Why would they create a drivers license and have the dates be different than the paperwork.....hum.

Hey all, it's been forever, but nice to see you all chatting it up.

I just want to throw out there that I think Locke is an "other". The whole commune he was living in got me thinking about it. I don't want to get into the details, but I think this will be the big twist that TPTB are going to give us. They told us that something BIG will happen.

So instead of Hurley being un-lucky in real life, he turns out to be lucky on the island, cause that knife that Locke threw at him was darn close to killing him.

Desmonds powers, or that Desmond and Locke are in on it together and they are others working together...The speach was all planned out and rehearsed.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Also interesting - in the license photo, he is already bald, but in the flashback he still had a full head of hair.

Any good cop would have noticed that the DOB on the license didn't match the firearms paperwork.

But since we know that the cop only pulled John over so that Eddie could start to win his trust, it makes sense that he would deliberately overlook the discrepancy.

Or maybe it was just sloppy prop management.

melissa_lossa,

Hello, fellow Michigander. I work in downtown Detroit and live in Troy, but will soon be moving to Sterling Heights. Where are you? And are you the one who was commenting about some of the roads and restaurants in the Detroit suburbs when WTK's abduction took place at the end of The Lost Experience?

I was lurking back then and about fell off my chair to think of something from the experience "happening" so close to home!

ratman,

Thanks for reading my long rant!

About what?

If you mean Locke in the wheelchair, I'm pretty sure. The show played out sort of like the Sixth Sense. Instead of Locke being dead, he was in a wheelchair the whole time. If you re-watch the episode, you'll notice that he was always sitting or laying in bed. You never see a wheelchair until he gets turned down at the Walkabout tour place.

engineer27 said...

ML -- good catch on the hair ... I guess we'll have to chalk this one up to "sloppy prop management".

Melissa_Lossa said...

blueheron -

I live in Grand Rapids, but I grew up in White Lake, about 20 minutes from Pontiac.

No, that wasn't me, so there must be another Michigander out there somewhere. I couldn't believe it either, once we figured out that it was in Troy!

Oh, and go Tigers! Speaking of things that are hard to believe.... :)

Engineer27 - I would allow for shotty props work...except that I do props work...and that's not shotty props work, that's just odd. If the props department had created the license from scratch they would have had all the information to make it correctly. (after all they would have been making the paperwork at the same time, and probably by the same person.) Conversely if it was an old prop that they pulled from another show, I would think they would have changed the paperwork dates to match the already made license. And if the license was just an old one of Terry's then it would have his real B-day on it. It doesn't really make sense. And since you know that everyone who makes that show would know that we would find out if there was a discrepancy....something doesn't sit right about that. I'll have to file that away in my brain till later.

how much time is suppose to have passed since the hatch blew up. and how long was desmond eko and locke out in the woods before locke wakes up.

Aradia said...

Oh yah...and for all you Michiganites.

GO Wisconsin!

Bigdog - According to Charlie...a day.

isibell -- And the hair?? Maybe a really bad rug? That he only removes for "official" photographs?

Melissa_Lossa said...

isibell - I agree, the prop department would have to go out of their way to make such a strange mistake. I had the thought as well that maybe it was a license that Terry O'Quinn had used on another show or in another movie, and just happened to have with him the day that they needed it.... but that seems far fetched as well. And you're right, they would have just typed that date onto the form.

Very odd. The only logical explaination is that it IS an old license of Terry's, and imdb just has his birthdate wrong.

Even odder, looking up Terry O'Quinn, I discover that he is ALSO from Michigan, and attended CMU!

blueheron13 said...

ratman-

Your version of the story makes a lot more sense to me than what we saw. I hope we are eventually given an explanation as to why a more common-sense type of scenario like you described didn't happen.

Everything happens for a reason....

isibell,

Actually there are no "michiganites" here. Some people go by "michigander" and some by "michiganian". There's no official term.

How do Wisconsin people refer to themselves (besides as Badgers)?

Melissa_Lossa said...

ha, ha - blueheron, I was actually laughing to myself that I used Michiganian and you used Michigander - seems like it's a never ending debate!

Aradia said...

Cheeseheads, thank you very much. Either that or Wisconsinites. And don't get down on my Michiganites or I might have to start refering to you as U-pers. ;)

Aradia said...

Engineer27 - To be fair it is a relly bad rug. Of corse that's the hair and make-up departments fault.

blueheron13 said...

No "yoopers" here! It looks like Mellisa_lossa and I live below the bridge - we're "trolls".

Capcom said...

Isibell, now we know why you notice the bad props! Me, I'm just a nikpikking artist, I wish that I could work in that field. (OT, one movie that drove me nuts with inconsistancies was "Total Recall")

Back to the show, the screencap that Dennis posted the site for of the imploded hatch ( http://gallery.lost-media.com/displayimage.php?album=1185&pos=296 ) shows some very interesting post-blast evidence. It looks as if only the magneto area inside Sayid's "Chernobel" type containment wall blew up (or in). The cap shows corridors leading out from there, allowing for the possibility that our heores managed to escape from being vaporized by the blast because they were not in the immediate vacinity of the magnet's placement. Maybe??????
