The Economist - Season 4, Episode 3

The ABC tag for tonight's episode says, "Sayid and Kate go in search of Locke to negotiate a peaceful deal when they discover that his hostage may be the key to getting off the island." Sounds pretty boring...but I doubt that we'll be bored.

Here's a little Valentine Treat from David A Dein and the Goog! It's a bonus episode of The Lost Community Podcast that includes excerpts of Episode 32 and 33 of The Devil's Advocate Podcast in which we discussed Lost! Hello? Is there anybody in there?

Looks like just you and me right now Erich. I agree that the time thing has to mean something, but I have no idea what. I like the idea that it has to do with turning the key. More than that, I'm lost.

Carol - Michael was on an episode of the original CSI that aired here last season, I believe. As I recall, it was a pretty good episode. He plays a priest, and he shows up about halfway or so through the episode. The episode is called "Go to Hell." Check it out!

I haven't seen anyone mention this: Wasn't Ben's tumor found just before the crash of 815? I think he didn't try to go 'off-Island' to get surgery because right after he discovered the tumor a spinal surgeon 'fell out of the sky'. Otherwise he might have made arrangements to go to a 'real' hospital (wouldn't it have been great to see him treated by Gregory House,MD? What a great snark contest that would be!)

Terry O'Quinn is on the View in a few minutes.

Good Morning All, Lots to get caught up on, but I just wanted to post a thought that occurred to me during my sleepless night.

Originally I believed that the island was only about 50 days behind the outside world. I didn't say anything because everyones math seemed so convincing, but maybe it's more simple. Does any of this make sense to anyone?

If the difference was 31 minutes it occurred to me that for every 1 hour that passes island time 1:31 minutes pass off the island. Heres the math:

24 hours per day and 31 extra minutes per hour means 12 more hours pass outside the island than on the island.

If this has always been this way and the Lostees have been on the island for 100 days this means that they have been on the island for 50 more days.

If this has only been since the hatch explosion then it is less days, but still just a bit in the future.

More from Ben Lundy: I do my best to apply Occam's Razor to LOST's mysteries, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the solution may have nothing to do with time travel at all. Isn't it just as plausible that the payload's circuits were simply scrambled by its attempt to reach the Island? We have seen many mechanical and electronic devices malfunction while trying to approach or leave the Island-- both helicopters and Desmond's boat, for example. So it could be that the payload's tracking system went haywire and it spent a half hour spinning in circles before it penetrated the Island's barrier and locked on to Daniel's location. Now that I can understand! Haywire mechanical malfunctions. I like it.

Sounds good to me. I'm not a big fan of the time-travel theories... seems like a red herring to me.

Zort70 said...

Regarding the time travel element, we could look at it like the string theory of time. (Borrowed from a Quantum Leap explanation)

You take a piece of string and hold it in front of you straight from end to end, this represents your passage through time.

If you then ball that string up then it represents points in time where you are personally going forward, but you are also crossing other points in time.

As someone said, going straight from a to b is the easiest way, but it is by no means the most interesting.

Now assume the island has a piece of string, but that string has been bent into a mobius type of loop, you can then jump on and off at any point along the journey.

So it is possible that the photo of Ben has not been taken yet in his personal time line. That would mean that in Ben's own personal timeline, that he hasn't made it of the island yet, since he originally went there.

I love time travel and it's complexities, I guess that's why I'm a Doctor Who fan !

morethanlastu...I agree with you there is a differential going....1:31.. every hour forward is one 1/2 slows down...it all builds up to make years...which keeps the survivors in a certain year...good job on time Erich.
Yesterday when I was listening but not watching to Tesla the Great Adventurer...one radio engineer said said radio resonance is moving like"swings in the air by themselves" As I recall Miles made that comment when he saw the barracks..
Someone mentioned that Matthew Fox was on Regis..
saw it today...before he came on Kelly and all were making time comments,etc....amusing but not relevant.. but Matthew Fox said production would be starting up and 5 or 6 more episodes...also he said 2 more years on the show. Regis tried to get clues out of him about seeing a dinosaur as the killer.Matthew acted like what are you talking about
then Regis asked how will it end do you know..1st he said yes then no then yes then no...then he said well the producers know with a big smile and that was the end of that

Well, since they named the captain of the Christiane I Mr. Ockham, I would love to think that the simpler the better! But is sure is fun to make assumptions! As to the time line thing, I'm sure it is integral to the story of LOST, no matter how easy we want this to be.

Tallone: I'm pretty sure that 5/2007 video of the freckage was fan generated.

I love the idea that the pic of Ben was taken at Sydney airport. Maybe he was there manipulating everyone onto the flight.

2costa said...

Ange lospedia said that miles licsence plate in his flash back/foward to his ghostbusting on the day of ther recovery of flight 815 was registered to 2008, which could be a continuity error, or more likely it is 2007 and his car is registered through 2008, it would be interesting to get a hard date on the paper in tunesia and any clues to the actuall date in frank and daniels clip since it is all the same day...just my two cents

maven said...

I think the only hard date we're ever going to get is September 22, 2004!

I just had a crazy thought why Sayid seemed so concerned that Naomi's body be taken back "home"...to the freighter. He wanted her dead body off island because -- knowing the healing powers of the island -- he was afraid that she would "wake up" if she stayed on the island and reveal some big dark secret that she knew about Sayid. Crazy, huh?

2costa said...

well i just dont think the producers are stupid enough to let a license plate expiration date be so wrong when everyone is searching for the littlest clue to what date it is in the outside world. Plus if it was just that they didnt remember to change the plate for filming wouldnt it be a hawaii state plate??? So until someone shows me something different miles liscence plate shows 815 wasnt found until somewhere between 1/2007 -2008 because those are the only dates you would have a 08 expiration on your plates, just like jacks krazr or the obit being in 2007 wasnt a continuity error...imho

tallone said...

hey maven...the airline news report could be fan made..it doesn't matter a whole lot.. but thanks.I guess the point to be considered is what time is on the island...looking at you -tube concerning construction of tesla coils...which anyone can do with everyday materials....they all have a safety switch or button which keeps the current from going back into the transformer and literally blowing it up! Is this the thing Locke was doing in the swan station? Then Demond used a key that released the energy.Tesla coils don't use wires so here's a little video...the barracks and the stations don't use power lines..things are just turned on even though there are left untouched for long periods...
the first part is fun with the lightbulbs..notice no wires and the piece from the film prestige......the rest is very, very boring...diagrams..if you like physics go for it...if you don't skip it.

They haven't changed the plan AFAIK.

Instead of showing all 8 of the pre-strike episodes in a row, they are only going to show 7, then there will be a four week break, then they will show epsidoe 8 along with the 5 new episodes. So we will have 7 & 6, instead of 8 & 5. 13 total either way.

2costa said... well i just dont think the producers are stupid enough to let a license plate expiration date be so wrong.

They make continuity errors all the time.

I just noticed in rewatching the episode that Sayid did not put 2 and 2 together when it came to Elsa's bracelet in terms of her being a bad guy. If he had, he would not have warned her to leave town. So now I'm even more confused about why Sayid is so interested in Naomi's bracelet. I guess he could have thought Elsa was an innocent employee of a bad man. But is that what he thinks of Naomi too?

Capcom said...

Maybe Sayid just likes silver friendship bracelets? J/K. :o) Good point Memphish.

FYI, here is an excerpt from an episode of the TV series SeaQuest("Playtime") that sort of helps to connect the Moebius theory to a Time loop:

["Lucas: One of the leading theories is that time forms some sort of continuum. An endless loop of sorts.

Bridger: The Mobias Strip?

Lucas: Yeah. Close enough. Now the reason we can't get back to our own time is, apparently, it doesn't exist anymore.

Bridger: Now wait a minute. We know our time existed. We were there. But how can the future exist without the past?

Lucas: It can't. But according to this theory the past can't exist without the future."]

Not really sure that this pertains to LOST, it's just an interesting thought to keep in mind just in case.

The enhanced version of lost last week ,regarding MIles, said it was filmed in Hawaii...just looks like LA.
I still think the bracelets are nothing more than a way to track people..just for a note Sayid did tell Elsa to leave Berlin immediately. Didn't check liscense plate..trying stopping image on that episode and enlarge it to see what year the plate is. The episode thing the with Matthew Fox put...it sounded like the producers were playing catch-up..from what he said it sounds like 5/6 episodes and that's it for this year...they haven't even started filming..and he is still doing the tour for Vantage Point.

2costa said...

well usually the continuity problems arent about sensative stuff like dates on things since the whole plot revolves around it. Since it was indeed filmed in hawaii I think im right about the timeline being a clue on miles' license plate. If it was a production error it would have been a 08 or 09 expiration Hawaii plate and not california. If they went to the trouble to have the plate be accurate of the location why not the date?

heres a fun little optical illusion thing on youtube including the mobius strip, which actually isnt an illusion

I thought of this too. It's almost like he saw Elsa's bracelet first and didn't know what to make of it and then saw Naomi's and thought "hey I've seen this before"- which would not be possible unless there really is a freaky time problem going on!

And capcom...regarding that SeaQuest excerpt- that is along the lines of what I was thinking but couldn't articulate! Although it is all so very confusing.
As far as whether or not there is a time difference or a red herring- I could go for there being no time issue except for the fact that since the end of S1 or maybe it was S2 TPTB have hinted that time may not be the same on as it is off the island.

The only other thought I had last night after I went to bed (instead of sleeping) was that all of these explanations are pretty scientific, or at least sci-fi. I keep thinking of Locke- man of faith- telling Jack that the island brought them all there for a reason. I believe that has to come into play somewhere, the faith side. So what in the world does the island want with these specific people? And maybe that's why they lie in the end, and/or why they have to go back so badly.

Capcom said...

Hey, that's OK Scoutpost, you make just as much sense with all this stuff as the rest of us do, while we're grasping for straws of understanding!

Well Memphish, we will miss your great QOTDs if you don't post. :-)

ok guys I was as usual I was looking for information on "wireless electric transmissions"...put into wikipedia and guess what came up? The only and only subject was "Amelia Earhart"...the site has there map and all that..lots of islands in the south pacific...the only thing I can glean from this is that at one point they used the wrong channel..which was considered too strong so here's the section on the signals and so forth map is here too http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_Earhart
Also i don't think Sayid has clued in on bracelets..just recognition level
Radio resonance has some effect as i understand on thought...so I wonder if when Locke sees the cabin and others have seen things that...someone is snding a message to them? As I recall most of the charachters were by themselves when they saw things..went looked at the first 8 minutes of the economist and there is plenty of background conversation....anybody know German?

Capcom said...

Wow, Damon and Carlton are really silly in the podcast! :o)

I'm listening to OLP now! They are soooo funny. Season 5: The Deck Collapse! LOL

Amused2bHere said...

On today's The View, Terry O'Quinn was asked by Whoopi who is in the cabin that John Locke is trying to go see...all he would say is Jacob. Duh. No further explanation. Not like he was going to give them a scoop, right?

The thing that got me was the stupid questions from Elizabeth Hasselbeck. Don't get me wrong, I like her. But the stuff she asked made me wonder if she's ever seen Lost. I was embarrassed that she even showed up for work today.

Carol Dunstan said...

something I have been meaning to check back on Naomi and applies to Elsa too, is do we see the bracelt before they die?

oh, and I just started reading Terry Pratchet's "The Light Fantastic"and the third line in the book is "When light encounters a strong magnetic field it loses all sense of urgency." That made me think of Dan... maybe he picked up that the light wasn't urgent enough ;-)

Haven't listened to either podcast but my sister tells me they said there are definate themes in Narnia that are relevant to LOST. And they talk about the Tunisian polar bear and the Orchid bunnies. Sweet.

maven said...

In the podcast, they were asked about how the polar bear got to Tunisia. After joking around a bit they said: THERE ARE PROPERTIES OF THE ISLAND THAT ARE CAPABLE OF TRANSPORTING THINGS ON THE ISLAND OFF THE ISLAND. Then they referred us to the Orchid film, saying that it is very related to this and they will get to it later in the year.

And the phrases they using re Faraday's experiment with the 31 minutes: "Time fluctuation" and "time shift".

Carol Dunstan said...

maven they were the two major points I got from it too. I'm really glad that the Orchid clip is going to come into it more, though the polar bear getting off a boat and going for a walk through Africa was an amusing suggestion.

As was the DHARMA lion...

ok all I just wanted to wrap up the Tesla thing for everyone's info.... Here's what I think it does as it applies to the island 1.) Energy moves freely over the island useable at any point at any time..the barracks, stations, radio tower 2.)it causes an auroa as seen by Sam 3.) it can make a shield to stop things coming/or slow them as they reach the ground the plane, the helicopter..that did land but erratically 4.) large amounts of resonance can cause earthquakes..Juillette's house..hatch tremors 5.) it pulls in signals form space..Hurley's hearing the Glen Miller music, Sam hears the news broadcast on the radio 6.) it can release large amounts of energy..the hatch blowing up....seen in Antarticia by Penny's people 7.)low level resonance as an affect on inanimate objects..the swings at the barracks 8.)it distorts time ...Daniel's clocks are out of sync 9.) it has some affect on thought...people see things 10.) it can be used for medical purposes...Rose's cancer,Locke can walk...this thing I saw it the paper today how radio frequency is being used to regulate heartbeat 11.) it can be use to bring thingsdown from the sky..planes,etc 12.) it can be used as a shield...13.) it can be used to interfere with communications, electrical equipment 12.) it can change physical structure visible/invisible as seen on the film Prestige...I don't know if this part is real but good story line for lost..ok that's it Oh yes most important! It needs a safety switch or button to keep current from flowing back...the computer/button/key in the hatch or it blows up and it modifies weather..desmond's lightening rod.

tallone said...

I was thinking about this morning...when I looked at the Mobius Strip on you tube it had a german spelling..moebus w/ the two marks over the e...so Sayid is in Berlin and there is a fair amount of German conversation in the background..that I had no clue what they said..also Amelia Earhert ..her last name is of German origin.
Ok now the Moebus strip as seen on you tube...it can be rolled out flat and moved through space...a sphere when placed on the strip travels in place with the strip..if you haven't seen it is unique...so is the island the sphere moving or not through time..is it stuck in time or moving slowly through time?

There's a NEW POST!

tallone said...

here's the thing on the saint gotta go
THE PARISH PATRON

ANDREW AVELLINO

So, who is this Saint Andrew Avellino? Admittedly he is not as well known as St. Francis, St. Lucy, St. Agnes, St. Patrick. How did he become the patron of our parish?

St. Andrew Avellino is a 16th century saint. He was born in Castronuova in the Kingdom of Naples in 1521. His given name was Lancelot Avellino. As a young man he was ordained a priest and sent to the University of Naples to study civil and canon law. While practicing law in an ecclesiastical court one day he caught himself in a lie. That evening while reading Scripture he came upon the words "The mouth that lieth killeth the soul". He decided to abandon the practice of law and devote himself entirely to the spiritual care of souls. At thirty five years of age he decided to join the Theatines, a religious congregation of priests, and he took the name "Andrew" because of the apostles devotion to the Cross. He eventually became the superior of the congregation and was instrumental in establishing a number of Theatine religious houses in Italy.

Through his relationship with St. Charles Borromeo Andrew Avellino became a significant force in the reform and restoration of genuine religious life in many religious communities in Italy. This was the time of the Protestant Reformation and church life was very much in need of its own reform. In the later years of his life Andrew suffered from apoplectic attacks. On November 10, 1608, at the age of 87, as he began Mass at St. Paul's Church in Naples he suffered an apoplectic attack that resulted in his death that afternoon.

It was the event of his death that became the reason for naming him the patron of our parish. After his canonization in 1712 he was invoked as the patron saint against sudden death and coronary disease. In 1914 when Bishop McDonnell gave permission to establish a new parish in Upper Flushing several priests of the diocese had died suddenly from apoplexy. The Bishop's concern over this moved him to seek the intercession of St. Andrew Avellino, and so named the new parish after the patron saint of sudden death. St. Andrew Avellino's fame had not spread very much outside Italy and so he is not well known. In fact our parish is the only known parish in the United States under his patronage. Another way in which we are unique!

And so St Andrew Avellino parish had permission to begin and a saint for its patron
