Thanks for the new post! I look forward to listening to the podcast.

Morning LoCos! I've put a few questions raised by The Economist in poll form over on my blog. Come by and vote. And did anyone understand the last 1/2 of J. Wood's article? I just got up the nerve to try to read it, and clearly do not have enough coffee or perhaps brain cells to follow it.

Good Morning! Off to listen to podcasts...(and vote in your poll, memphish!)

Good morning.Memphish, and all Loco's. I really enjoyed J. Wood's article.I think I understood enough of the last half to get what he was saying. He made it just simple enough for me.
Tallone, thanks for all those videos.Pace yourself though,I think we will get more mysteries before the clouds break and we finaly see what it really going on.

(I voted.)

Just finished listening to the official podcast. My favorite line:

"If we were just one tenth as smart as [the fans] are, the show would be amazing...and make no sense whatsoever."

It's funny because it's true.

Capcom said...

Heheh, that was funny in the podcast Erich. :-)

Tallone, I like your list of island effects that you posted on the other thread. Also: "It needs a safety switch or button to keep current from flowing back" is an interesting thought. Perhaps what the DI did to the natural island forces, was to put in it a closed circuit, which trapped it in from it's free-flowing state. In order to utilize these forces and apply or attach them to a piece of equipment, you'd have to do that in some way. So what you said makes sense.

Which part of Wood's last half are you guys talking about? He through in a lot of concepts there.

Capcom said...

Erm, I meant "threw". Dang typos.

Scoutpost said...

Good morning! Not a lot to add this morning. I trudged through J. Wood and managed to understand (at least I think I do), but I did have to read parts of it twice...and I had plenty of caffeine in my system when I did ;)

Hopefully I'll get to listen to the podcasts later today.

I am so ready for the next episode, I don't think I can stuff any more time travel info in my head without having more to go on.

Tallone- you've done a lot of interesting research. Thanks!

Ok I'll try to restrain myself on the videos..I'm having a blast with this..i feel liking some whistleblower on the island..listening to podcast...they say the year is 2004, also Locke becoming Ben,doesn't cabin Hurley does locke's group becoming new others..they are unwilling,oh they say the Widmore owns Hanso, owns Oceanic...said the Miles and his gang all don't each others roles ...all want Ben..says Island corrects itself...are they saying the flashforwards are 2004/2005..ok now time stuff..off by 31 minutes...oh physics of the island..radio waves get off the island..plane crossed into island wormhole..31 minutes behind..send signal into it 31 minutes late...and he said 31 minutes before signals going off the island...they couldn't figures this one..Hurley..rational person in an irrational place..likes the survivors he is with..looking for Hurley to be next hero...i ok got listen more closely..see you later

ok finished listening...saw the spoiler they mentioned about then 6 elsewhere on the web...my lips are sealed..

Ok says Ben is out to protect the Island..Jacob tells him what to do...Sayid does the killing..they suggest he is knocking off the big boys of Widmore..intersting thing does Penny want Desmond alive? Time for lunch..must do errands..I'll cover my head who knows what will fall from the sky!

Capcom said...

Speaking of falling from the sky, did you mean the satellite Tallone? :o) I'm sure that some foil-hatters will find meaning in the fact that they are shooting it down on the night of a lunar eclipse (8:40-ish, EST).

memphish said...

Y'all be sure to go back and check the polls on my blog once you've voted. It's interesting. So far 1/2 the people think the golf flashback is before and 1/2 after the Elsa flashbacks. 1 min. Island time = 30 min. Off Island time is trailing far behind other ideas. And so far the 2004 Red Sox theory is trumping the 2007 one.

Maybe we'll get some answers in the pop-ups tomorrow. I won't be able to watch them as it airs, so I'll be counting on the LoCos to keep me posted on interesting pop-up factoids.

maven said...

Morning all. Tallone, you're doing a great job, and I love your enthusiasm . However, I, for one, feel like everything is just way over my head right now, and I need more facts from the show to understand the science and math. It's fun to speculate and theorize, but it's getting to be too much work for me! LOL Maybe it's being out of school for 30 years!

Off to vote, Memphish!

I hear ya maven! Maybe TPTB are trying hard for the first 5 seasons to completely confuse us and exhaust us with all these potential scientific theories so that by season 6 we'll all be wishing that the snowglobe theory or the "it was all a dream" theory was true. That's going to be all my brain will comprehend by the time this is all over :)

tallone, you're hitting almost every non-official fan-made hoax site out there.

Check Lostpedia for a good list of canon and non-canon websites.

Capcom said...

Thanks for the Casimir links Sayidsgirl!

What we need to find now is a scientific paper on how a big (possibly floating) blob of volcanic rock (the island) can produce the same Casimir qualities of two metal plates in a vacuum chamber. :-)

I suppose that since TPTB had Dr.Candlewickwax say, "...a 'sort of' Casimir effect..." gives them some leeway for not having it be exactly the same thing in the show as what is produced in a laboratory environment. I just really hope that they don't wait until season 6 to answer all the fun science questions.

Erich said...

Yeah, wow! All this science stuff has officially gone way over my head, too.

From Maureen Ryan at The Chicago Tribune citing ABC:

And “Lost” fans, there’s good news: “Lost” will finish up its current run of eight episodes as scheduled, then return April 24 with five more Season 4 outings. When it comes back in late April, “Lost” will finish off ABC’s post-strike Thursday lineup. It will air one hour later, after the returning “Ugly Betty” and “Grey’s Anatomy.”

So this says we'll get 8 then the break and then 5. This is a slight change from what was reported earlier which was 7, break, 6.

Capcom said...

Well that sounds pretty good Memphish.

tallone said...

as i say we need a science consultant....there's got to be someone reading this that has a science background...geez smoking mirrors and all that...good the producers must had a talk with ABC because Matthew Fox said only 5/6...I'm confused I think about the sequence of time stuff with sayid...your poll was fun mempish..but now i wonder giving what we heard on the podacast..which is 1st...golf course or Berlin?
Is Avellinio (spelled right?) a widmore big boy?

The casimir stuff and most of the scientific things are over my head. But I kind of get the gist of it and find it very interesting.

I agree capcom the fact they say kind of casimir effect is a way around pure science. That along with them saying "we'll call them properties for now" in the OLP when talking about the island being potentionally capabale of transporting from the island to off the island when talking about the polar bear in Tunisia.

erich
Yes we definitely need Mr. Wizard he'd be able to explain all of this so we'd all be able to understand it.

maven said...

I hope everyone doesn't think I'm putting down all this scientific "stuff". All the more power to those who understand it and even knows how to research it! I read your posts, and I'm impressed...but confused! LOL I know TPTB are hinting at a lot of things, and I hope they keep dropping those hints and our Mr. Wizard comes along to explain it to me! Keep up the good work.

tallone said...

I'm pooped on physics....no i don't think you're putting science down...I know what you mean...I spent hours on the Tesla thing...I get the concepts...but flow of electicity and all that...forget it..also I don't get the klein bottle thing...Mr.Wizard please come forward!

Capcom said...

In all your internet research did any of you come across the sites with the knitted Moebius bands (for shawls) and the knitted Klein bottles? Yes, I said knitted! The shawls and hats are very pretty, but I don't know how you would use the knitted bottles. Anyway, I ran out and got some yarn and crocheted a silly Moebius band, just to see if I could do it. If I get a pattern down, I might try the shawls. If nothing else, I haven't crocheted since the 1970s, so LOST got me doing that again, also! :-D

Capcom said...

Sheesh, I just sent Doc Jensen an email asking him about what happened to the full on bird's eye view of the island that he said we would get last week, and it got bounced back saying that his box is full. I hope that he mentions what happened to that some time.

Gina Serpe of EOnline reported: Lost , which premiered in the midseason, is the only one of those series which is still airing original episodes. ABC has ordered five more original episodes, bringing the season total to 13, just shy of the original order of 16.

Although Lost was able to move time slots to Thursdays at 9 p.m., thanks to rival networks' juggernauts forced into reruns due to the strike, ABC is quitting while it's ahead with the island series, pushing it back to Thursdays at 10 p.m. starting Apr. 24.

maven said...

Another FYI: Keepingawake on DocArtz has posted this:

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films has given Lost seven nods, more than any other television show.

Lost was nominated for:
* Best Network Television Series.
* Best Actor on Television: Matthew Fox
* Best Actress on Television: Evangeline Lily
* Best Supporting Actor: Michael Emerson, Josh Holloway, Terry O'Quinn
* Best Supporting Actress: Elizabeth Mitchell
* Best Television Series on DVD: Lost, The Complete Third Season

Although we've been trying to talk science FACT, it's gratifying to see some acknowledgment for science FICTION!

tallone said...

thanks piscel for the comment....capcom what do you mean by "knitted"? I saw those things on the web..they have lines through them is that what you mean..I just think electromagnetism(Tesla) is the issue and widmore labs makes the stuff and eventhough the site is old it says right on the dharma research site..we make sonic weapons, also they are experts in electromagnetism..that's pretty clear to me.
I don't think I would be searching around on the web if there was an ARG to play. thanks all!

So whatever the island has it could hurt or help mankind....BIG TIME!....Also why did ben knock off all the Dharma staff anyway? Just as an aside ABC preview Kate sitting by the wreckage...I saw this scene a few weeks ago elsewhere....

saw this on the transmission this morning regarding Lapidus...could be recycled name by the writers
ok here you go
Due to a recorder malfunction, I was not able to watch last night's episode of LOST, but I had read your post of the official blurb from ABC earlier in the day. It lists "Jeff Fahey as Frank Lapidus" among the credits. Since I couldn't watch the new episode of LOST, I did the next best thing and picked up the season 3 DVD and re-watched an episode. We watched the episode "Expose", and by sheer coincidence I decided to freeze frame on the shot of Nikki's Expose script where the cast is listed. What do you know, but there is another guy with the last name "Lapidus" listed as an actor for that episode of "Expose"! I suspect it's just a reuse of an interesting name by the show creators, but you never know what connections there are in the LOST universe. Incidentally, Lapidus means "candle," or "torch" according to Wikipedia. Reminds me of "Marvin Candle".
here's the address for the picture.

memphish said...

Doc Jensen's pre-episode post. There are 4 teases in the first 1/2 of the first page, but they give you room to speculate, not answers, but skip that if you want and head to his interview with Damon and Carlton!

They give us some answers about some of the things we've been wondering about like the bracelet and time references in Sayid's Flash Forward and the Red Sox.

There is some forward looking information in the article in terms of where Season 4 is headed and things that will and will not be addressed in this season. To that extent it is "spoilery" but I'd put in on the level of Comic Con panel and OLP spoilery. There aren't specific this is going to happen here except for 1 statement about a theme of Episode 5. I think you can judge from Jensen's question whether or not you want to read the answers.

Also, this week's EW will have more from Damon and Carlton in it. Something to look forward to Maven.

Dennis said...

Memphish,

WOW! What a great interview. A little spoilery, but it really clears up a lot of things. One thing especially... what is 'canon':

Find815 - NOT Canon
Mobisodes - Canon
Orchid video - Canon
Lost Video Game - NOT Canon

Unknown said...

That's pretty disappointing that they couldn't take steps to ensure that the entirety of Find 815 would stay within canon.

Erich said...

Thanks, Memphis, for the interview link. A lot of great info in there, some of it spoiler-ish (though I tend to think that whatever DC are willing to tell us doesn't count as "spoiler"). Avoiding what was said about the direction of the season, and what we will and won't get answers to (good stuff!), it's great to get a firm definition of rules for the flashforwards and the possibilities (or not) of alternate realities and time travel. We can finally put to rest the '04/'07 Red Sox question, and whether Sayid's golf course hit happened before or after he met Elsa.

There's a lot to look forward to this season. After reading that interview, I can't wait for episode 5!

Erich said...

I guess it goes to show that once everything' said and done, all anyone new to Lost will have are the series episodes. Nothing else is truly necessary to tell the story.

Capcom said...

Thanks for the heads-up on the Doc article, Memphish. Those two guys are so silly!

Concerning the bracelets...I think that TPTB need to remember what kind of show that they have created (a big giant puzzle, in their words), and how putting certain scenes or aspects into the show will compel viewers to go off on the obligatory tangents that TPTB have built into the show, to look for the missing pieces of that puzzle. Humph. (just me feeling stupid for wasting valuable thought-time on non-essentials)

It's good to know that the FFs are chronological! Whew!

The Red Sox thing...same as what I said about the bracelet.

I have to say that it is a very satisfying article, we owe Doc a lot. Too bad we can't take him out for coffee or a beer to thank him.

Capcom said...

I agree with what you said about Find815 Kyle.

Ange said...

You know this "canon/not-canon" thing has me confused. I don't think we can discount the things that were billed as "Season 4 Clues" in Find 815 as not canon.

I *do* think that the company that created the game took huge liberties with the Amelia Earhart and Maxwell stuff, but the specific clues I personally feel will be direct to the show. The passwords are a whole other thing, but they have been accurate character names so frankly, I'm not sure what's non-canon about that?

Why would they bill game stuff as specifically "Season 4 Clues" otherwise? I'm with Capcom and Kyle on this one, grr this made me frustrated.

Happy Lost Day everyone!

Ange said...

Dennis said...
WOW! What a great interview. A little spoilery,

When you say spoilery, how spoilery is it? Like wait until after tonight spoilery, or read it now and get a few hints to the episode spoilery. I'm scared to look.

Unknown said...

ange: Very little specific to tonight, IIRC. But if you don't even want to know information on the level of "episode X will focus on _____", then don't read the last couple pages.

memphish said...

It seems that Find815 has turned into the next Bad Twin. Outlines were given, but not everything was vetted before it was released, so it's relegated to non-canon. What I don't understand was why do it that way? Was it just because of the writer's strike? It's frustrating that they'd use the official ABC website to release non-canon info.

Taking a step back from the frustration though I'd say that the clues were canonical items, but in terms of Sam and his story, Ockham, Talbot, even Maxwell, it's hard to say what we should take from that. I think though we'll have some of our answers on that account by the end of S4.

In general when it comes to these extra-curricular activities really we should just be grateful there's anything. Most viewers have just ignored LOST's existence for the past 8 months. The fact that we keep thinking about it when it's not on is really more our issue than theirs. That TPTB give us anything extra in terms of scientific theories to mull over and books to read and games to play are all gravy on the experience that is 100 odd hours of television.

memphish said...

Ange it's like listening to the OLP or the Comic Con panel. Damon and Carlton outline their vision for what S4 is about and what it's not about. There is also some information about what Episode 5 is going to be about, but no specifics in terms of this will happen, this won't. There's also a discussion of what's going on with the timeline of the show, but in my mind that doesn't really tell me something that will ruin the viewing experience for me. It's general, but it is forward looking.

Unknown said...

It feels like it's been a really long time since "The Economist." Dunno why. But I can't wait for tonight's episode!

What I did was skip the first page that has the tease.
And went to the interview.
On the third page is where they start to talk about episode 5. The first 4 comments from Carlton and Damon to me or ok when answering Doc's question. On the 5th comment is where they start to talk about episode 5 that's where I skipped to the bottom of the page and picked it back up where Doc say he thinks they are pulling his leg on some of the stuff and finished the interview.
To me memphish is right it is no more spoilery than an OPL as in what general direction this season is going. She also said the episode 5 stuff is pretty general(and I trust her) but I personally don't want to know anything in advance about an episode. I don't even like to know the title because sometimes it can be leading. But that is almost impossible to advoid so I live with that.

Happy Lost Day:

Loved the Doc Jensen article! Even if it did debunk my 2007 Red Sox Theory! LOL I eat my words!

It's so interesting how they (through Doc) seem to really be listening to our concerns, crazy ideas, thoughtful questions, bizarre scenarios...and address them. I guess they don't want us to spend too much time and energy going off the deep end! LOL

It is frustrating re the Find815 game not being totally canon. I agree, Ange, that the Season 4 clues were very important. The end result of the game seems to be the only thing that rang true to the show. But we sure did have a great 5 weeks over at Oceanic Conspiracies...researching, learning, and, basically, staying together as a community. That's worth it right there. We should be grateful for a great, educational time!

I really don't think that the article was very spoilery in terms of giving anything very specific. It just lays out an overall plan and direction for the seasons. I read the whole thing very eagerly. I got some real answers to some things (bracelet, Red Sox, Ben's list, chronology of FFs and what they mean to the overall story.

tallone said...

I suppose you could call that interview plot development out loud....hmm they did tease the interviewer....geez..they don't they know were hanging on every syllable?

Capcom said...

That's a good comparison, Memphish, Bad Twin to Find815. Including Bad Twin into my experience was fun, but it just confused the heck outta me with all the points of the story that conflicted, or did not really jive or parallel, with the show. Still, I now have another souvenir of the entire LOST experience to...collect dust on the bookshelf with. :-)

Dennis did a very good job of blocking out the specific spoilers in the Doc Jensen article. But if you don't want to know absolutely anything about which questions will be addressed this season and which will not, you probably won't want to read the article at all.

As for TPTB clarifying what we've already seen, here's my quick summary of what was said.

1. There is no connection between Elsa's and Naomi's bracelets (other than for dramatic purposes--the one reminds Sayid of the other and helps tie the FF to the island events).

2. The flashes in a particular episode are shown in chronological order. In other words, Sayid killed the man on the golf course before meeting Elsa in Berlin.

3. Lapidus is referring to the 2004 Boston Red Sox.

4. Any time travel on the show is written so as to avoid paradoxes.

5. Faraday's experiment established that there is a "time differential on the island". (I'm still not sure what that means exactly.)

6. The Orchid video and mobisodes are "canon", while the Find 815 game and the video game are not.

7. However, the general idea of the Find 815 game--that a boat called the Christiane I discovered the planted crash of Flight 815 while looking for the Black Rock--is canon. And that "the people who owned the ship may have been up to a little bit more than just looking for the Black Rock."

8. The flash-forwards are definitely what will happen in the future. They are not possible alternative futures.

Hope that helps a few folks. At the very least, typing this up will help me remember the article better!

blueheron - thanks for that! I'm swamped right now, so I don't have time to read the article, so a summary was just what I needed!

Quick drive by theory from another of my co-workers:

As the freighter four were finding about the wreckage of 815, Des was back in time, creating some kind of alternate timeline. This is why the picture frames at the house Miles goes to switch while he's upstairs - things have shifted slightly.

Supposedly someone has timed it out and discovered that the freckage corresponds with the purpling - not sure how/where this was discovered.

I think that's interesting - although I have no idea what it means!

That's all I have time for - to quote speaker, "poof!"

I do wish TPTB had addressed those confounded picture frames.

Good thoughts for today, but as it is Thursday I'll say goodbye until Sunday in the UK.

My favourite comment from the interview was the one about Charlotte and how a certain author might be involed.

Is it Sunday yet ?

Ok I just read Doc Jensen and I've changed my opinion since this morning...I want my LOST and I want it NOW!!!

It was good to hear the answers they gave. That keeps us from going down to many wrong roads now. Although there are still many out there to go down ;)

Kyle- Guess when it comes to the picture frames anything is up for grabs!

Capcom- I agree TLG has got to have some sort of transport/teleport capability doesn't it? If not, what a waste.

scoutpost: Then....I vote that the picture frames are made up of nanobots!! Psycho-reactive nanobots!

I'm bitterly disappointed to read FIND815 isn't canon. The next question is how un-canon is it? Does Sam (and Sonya) even exist in the LOST world? If not, at least I have Underbelly ;-)

Dennis, I never knew spoilerfixed existed, thankyou!

Dennis said...

It didn't exist until I just made it ;) It's a play on Spoilerfix.com

BTW, is anyone interested in seeing that Vantage Point movie with Matthew Fox this weekend? It doesn't seem to be 'tracking' well, but I think it looks right up our alley, puzzle-wise, and having Jack in it doesn't hurt.

Carol...yeah was kind of weird about 815....they just wanted to perk up the audience's interest...sounds like the producers gave them a storyline and they went with it

Dennis... Vantage Point does sound interesting...can see it just yet..soon though

Ratings came out and LOST is #4!

Also, CANE has officially been canceled by CBS. Does this mean we'll now see Richard Alpert at the Temple?

Tess315 said...

oooo!
I hope so.
I'm curious about that temple trek.

Capcom said: I also am holding out for the LG to have some kind of apparatus that catapults things thru time/space/distance/whatever.

I agree. Just naming this station Looking Glass connotes that it leads to somewhere else like in the Alice book. However that happens remains to be seen, but why else would it be named that?

Has anyone posted the picture frame question at ABC.com? I checked Gregg Nations thread at the Fuselage and someone's asked the question, but no answer yet. Speaking of Gregg Nations, there was an interesting story on Morning Edition today about Script supervisors and continuity errors. You might want to give it a listen.

Nanobot frames, that is the top theory for that episode as far as I am concerned! :-D

Aw man, too bad about Cane, for those involved. And they just burnt down the sugar crop and now I won't know how they make the rum without it! But, now we'll get Richard back, yay.

I think tht Vantage Point looks pretty good, I'll try to make it.
