Reposting from the previous thread.

I know some of us have probably said this before, but I was thinking about Jacob and the fact that the biblical Jacob was a twin. I wonder if LOST's Jacob might be Alvar Hanso's bad twin. In the Bible, Jacob was a trickster, a grasper, a deceiver; he used a disguise to steal the blessing from his twin brother. Then he had to flee his irate brother who was threatening to kill him and in an "it will come back around" moment his father-in-law tricks him into marrying the older daughter instead of the younger as promised. This makes me wonder if LOST's Jacob was likewise tricked into his current ash-surrounded cabin. Is LOST's Jacob still working off his debt to achieve his actual goal (Rachel in the case of the Biblical Jacob) after being tricked perhaps by Ben in this first instance?

Also, did Jacob "steal" Alvar's birthright/blessing of the Island via the Purge like the Biblical Jacob?

Memphish, I think your ideas about this are interesting. I've been thinking that Ben was manipulated and groomed by Alpert & Co. to help them with the purge and become the other's puppet leader. Could Alpert be Jacob's true right-hand man? Is Mittlos Jacob's company; the evil equivalent to The Hanso Foundation? Good stuff! It would be cool if the longest con was on Ben.

I enjoyed everyones comments on AN OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE even though I haven't read the book. I also haven't read THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ, but I'm going to listen to the podcast.

A Happy, Happy, belated Birthday to Chucklez3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, TLC has a birthday coming up.... Aug.31!

Jacob is the Wizard. All his disguises and special effects and obfuscations are, in LOST, the Smoke Monster.

I've got more thoughts, but I left my notes at home. I'm interested as to whether my question got read or not (can't get to Talkshoe on work computers).

Capcom said...

Zort, you're too funny. :o)

Memphish, I really hope so! That would be very fun, and would give some rhyme and reason for the existence and publication of "Bad Twin". Heheh. The correlations to Jacob and Esau are very plausible.

Hey, everyone! For inquiring minds, here are the "official" questions that were discussed on the Wizard of Oz podcast:

1) In the book, people were drawn to Oz during mysterious storms and wind currents are were unable to find their way back. Oz is also surrounded on all sides by desert, much like the island is surrounded by water. Is the island another place that exists in tandem with our world, but outside of our reality – is the island Oz?

2) Ben’s flashback episode is called The Man Behind the Curtain. Who is the man behind the curtain on the island? Is it Ben or is it Jacob? Is it someone else entirely – perhaps Richard Alpert or even someone off the island?

3) When Dorothy lands n Oz, she is revered for having killed the Wicked Witch of the West and freeing the Munchkins. Who on the island fits the Dorothy role? Is it Ben, who arrived and rid the island of Dharma, or is it Jack and the Losties, who arrived and have been ridding the island of Others? Among the island dwellers, who is enslaved to who?

4) Dorothy travels with the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, all of whom overcome their failings and are rewarded with a kingdom to rule. Is this similar to the themes of redemption found on the island?

5) What is the reward for the Losties who have been redeemed? In many cases, it seems to be death (i.e. Charlie, Shannon, Ana Lucia), but some people have had more positive turns – Sawyer, Jack and Locke have all seemed to find leadership positions through their redemption – is it only because their redemption is not complete?

Also, can someone please post a link to the Lost Bullets blog by Fenris and Ange? David referenced them quite a bit this time.

i think ben let richard think he was his puppet, but right after the purge ben took the reigns of control and never let up. I think Ben's whole plan last season was the culmination of his twenty year plan to take complete conrol of the others and the island and leave mittleos bioscience holding the bag, and not being able to get back to the island. Ben told locke he and a few others were smart enough to survive the purge and no other could have as much knowlegde as ben about dharma procedures so he used that fact to stear the ship, just look at how he played richard and mikhail with the looking glass and the two ladies supposed mission in Canada. I have proposed before that ben is privy to events in the timeline. So sticking with the slaughterhouse five thing ben wasnt lying when he said the looking glass was flooded, it just wasnt flooded at the present time that he said it. But the communications room is sure flooded now. I think isabel being dead fits in to that too. I remarked last season that all of ben's moves since the crash have put his top others leaders in jeapardy, like sending his surgeon ethan to do all the heavy lifting with the whole claire thing. I also disagree with people that think ethan was misguided working alone. When he took claire the tracks split ooff into two differnt trails so I think hanging charlie was no improv, it prolly came down right from ben. It youll recall the second trail is what led locke and boon to the swan, which set all these other events into motion, which also goes with my thought that ben had a very elaborate plan to get rid of his top guys that were recruited post-purge and have loyalty to mittleos, and tren replace them with 815'ers. Ask yourself if Ben moved up the raid on the beach to surprise the 815'ers, why did he warn alex. Why would he leave his recorder for richard to give to locke. Ben had to know richard was plotting against him. Locke had pretty much told him so. The only one that had egg on their face at the end of the season was richard when his locke jacob plan had failed. Mikhail permanently unjamming the signal seems to be proof of his mittleos loyalty. Besides richard i can think of one prominent other that is left alive, including isabell...

memphish said...

Hmmm, that's interesting 2Costa. But did Ben completely underestimate Jack again then? I don't think Ben wants the people Jack called to find them. It also seems like if he wanted to make replacement in the ranks he'd have tried to mitigate the reign of terror he's imposed upon those from Flight 815. Other than sticking them in Room 23, how will Ben ever get him to trust him?

Unknown said...

I'm curious about something from WWoO... why did the Wizard present himself in all his disguises in the very ways that would upset or intimidate his guests, but in the wrong order?

The Beast would have frightened the Lion, but it was the Woodman that saw the Beast.

The Lady would have upset the Tin Woodman, but it was the Scarecrow that saw the Lady.

The Ball of Fire would have terrified the Scarecrow, but it was the Lion that saw the Ball of Fire.

Only Dorothy's made sense, as she was looking for a supreme authority figure.

What's the reasoning behind this, and are there any LOST parallels that can be drawn?

2costa said...

if you will recall goodwin seemed to be plotting with julliette against ben, with their pillow talk and ben sent him to deal with the tailies and that was even more dangerous than ethans mission, cause they were periodically kidnapping tailies and goodwin had to play it all off. Ben has patients and it shows with how he met with richard when he was a child and the purge didnt happen till years later, and to me ben's currant plan is no differnt. As far as Jacob i cant say that he is the wizarard until they delve deeper in season 4, as of season three it seems that ben or whoever conrtolls the smoke is the wizard. Locke does fit the tinman role pretty good.

2costa said...

i dont know if anyone touched on it but i think kate is very dorthy like. How she doesnt have this great reality to get back to, but still wants to go back to kansas. I youll recall the time she was picking fruit was very simuliar to when dorthy was picking apples in the movie

memphish said...

Here are some random WWOO thoughts I had back when it read it this spring.

Here is my first crack at making character comparisons.

Jack is the Scarecrow because what he wants is enough brains to impress his dad, and like the Scarecrow he already has them but doesn't know it.

Sawyer is the Tinman who wants a heart so he can fall back in love with sweetheart (a munchkin) like Sawyer needs to be able to love Kate (or Cassidy or Clementine).

Juliet is Dorothy in that she wants to get home because she's worried about those she's left behind and also because both of them are marked. Dorothy in the book is marked by the Good Witch of the North's kiss and so the Wicked Witch of the West can't hurt her. Juliet is marked by that thing on her back, and many people have speculated it's the mark of Cain which prevents her own people from harming her. Juliet is not Dorothy though in the following way. Juliet is an "every man for herself" kind of girl and Dorothy is "live together, die alone."

Desmond is the cowardly lion.

Of course the catch in WWOO is that everyone but Dorothy already has what he wants and what the Wizard gives them basically is confidence be it in their brains, their heart or their courage. The Island is basically providing the same opportunity for its inhabitants to prove they have the thing they long for most (except home.) I think this explains the change in Juliet from flashback to on Island Juliet as well. She was certainly a cowardly lion before she met Ben.

More next post.

2costa said...

memphis i think ben and locke knew they had to let jack make the call, obviously ben was wrong when he said every living thing on the island would die, caus elook at jacks flash foward, but in the same slaughterhouse was everything is always dying that is the nature of life, it just a matter of when. Ben has tons of weapons at his disposal, if he really didnt want jack to make the call why did he go to the radio tower unarmed. I think ben and locke just want to get it over and deal with naomis people accordingly. I think jack's decision to make the call, might have been his ultimate test of the island, like ben said to locke about killing his dad. It was jacks ultimate flexing of his free will

Melissa_Lossa said...

Thank you, memphish! I should've known you'd be all over it. :)

I hope you can join us for a podcast again soon!

memphish said...

Here's how I assigned each LOST character to a WWOO character.

Scarecrows - Jack, Locke, Claire?, Shannon (could be Tin Man too)
Tin Man - Sawyer, Kate (maybe scarecrow), Sun?, Ana Lucia, Libby?
Lion - Desmond, Charlie, Jin (maybe scarecrow), Hurley?, Sayid, Boone, Eko?
Dorothy - Juliet, Michael, Bernard (pre-SOS)
Wizard - Ben, Locke wishes he was, Walt?, lately Hurley's been the Wizard as well

Rose would be one of the Good Witches b/c that lady's got it all together and wants to stay.

memphish said...

TBP your question is very interesting. I'll have to think about it. I'll think about M_L's as well and I look forward to listening to the podcast.

2costa said...

i like the idea that all the 815'ers that want to go home are a group dorthy, while i see a sawyer/locke are both the tinman. In the same way sawyer and locke together make a whole person, they have very simuliar backgrounds, but very differnt reaction. If youll recall sawyer wasnt always a killer thats why they set him up to kill shrimp guy to break his cherry, so to speak

2costa said...

wasn't "zeke" the name of one of the farm hands that turns out to be the cowardly lion. The way the wizard appears as differnt stuff, giant head, fairy, ect reminds me of the smoke monster. So whoever controls the smoke is the wizard

memphish said...

I don't think Kate is Dorothy; she's Thomas Wolfe -- she can't go home again. Evangeline Lilly in a Dorothy outfit would look like Judy Garland though.

Unknown said...

IMO, definitely need to keep the discussions separate on film version similarities. That's, well, a horse of a different color, frankly.

I'll take Ev in a gingham jumper any damn day, though.

(speaking of "Ev," that's the name of the magical land to which Dorothy returns in the third Oz book. it's across the wide and deadly desert from Oz. anyone take note of how Dorothy makes it back to that magical continent in Book 3?)

Ange said...

thebookpolice said...... why did the Wizard present himself in all his disguises in the very ways that would upset or intimidate his guests, but in the wrong order?

Maybe he was doing sort of a passive aggressive intimidation thing. He could have been worried that his disguise, if appropriate to terrify each character, might not have done the trick. So, he appeared as something that would frighten someone but out of order hoping that when they all told each other about meeting Oz, the descriptions would be sufficient to terrify through the retelling.

memphish: I loved your character designations. I think I personally would maybe add Walt as a Dorothy. He has these powers to all sorts of things (like Dorothy) but doesn't even know it.

PS: agreed about the movie and the book. They are so different, but honestly I had no idea they were until I read it.

*In the novel "The Number of the Beast" by Robert Heinlein, Glinda the Good Witch reminds two pregnant women that nobody gives birth in Oz

To add to my notion that more than one person make up a complete person like locke/sawyer make one good guy. I never thought about it before, but maybe ben can see jacob, but can not hear him and maybe locke can hear him, but not see him, sort of like the three monkeys hear no evil see no evil or whatever and that leads me back to the rock, paper, scissors of the lion scarecrow and tinman

You know, that idea you have about Ben only being able to see Jacob while Locke hears him is pretty neat. It makes me really want to think about that more.

I wonder if any of the other members of Ben's merry men can hear Jacob? Maybe someone who has died was the hearer, and that's why Ben needs someone else to be able to interact with Jacob?

LOST on Gilligan's Island. This has been on youtube since last October 2006, but I hadn't seen it. It's black and white Gilligan's Island recut with LOST's music as a drama. It's really good.

maven said...

Memphish: Thanks for the Lost on Gilligan's Island link. It's good to laugh again. (BTW: My father wrote a few episodes of Gilligan's Island.)

Love all the Oz discussions and trying to find which Lost characters are most like which Oz characters. I think most of the Losties have a little bit from all the Oz characters. I really like the "sharing" of Jacob between Locke and Ben. Two halves make a whole.

The major theme of WWoO is: There's no place like home. It will be interesting to see in the upcoming season's FFs how many actually are comfortable with going home or was it better on the island. Locke seems to think his "home" is on the island.

I thought this summer my brain would turn to mush...but all you guys have kept me thinking! Thanks.

memphish said...

Maven -- your dad wrote for Gilligan's Island? That is so cool. I'm one of those people who got Ted Turner's re-runs before he went "superstation" because of my proximity to Atlanta. I loved watching Gilligan's Island.

The more I think about the characters on LOST and the characters in WWOO it's basically the case that each one of the LOSTies is every character in WWOO to some degree. They all need (and have, but are challenged to manifest) brains, heart, and courage in order to survive on the Island. The real question for each of them going forward is going to be where is home. You could argue that the LOSTies who've died have chosen the Island as home, especially Charlie's and Eko's purposeful and chosen deaths. Locke, Rose, Bernard have all chosen the Island as has Ben and Rousseau. I hope we'll get to see how that plays out with Alex because Rousseau says explicitly in TTLG that she wants to remain on the Island. Michael and Walt as well as Jack and Kate apparently chose not the Island. Boy I wish it were February.

maven said...

Memphish: Dad (Stan Burns) wrote the episode where they thought the island was sinking.

It will be interesting to see where everyone ends up when the series ends (boo hoo). "There's no place like home" could be the island for many of them.

All the WWOO discussions are getting me worried, that we are going back to the territory where the final scene will be Hurley waking up in an institution and seeing Kate as a nurse, Sawyer as a psychiatrist, and Ben as an orderly.

Zort70 said...

Of course that could be the penutimate scene and the final one is Jacob using a hatch on the island to manipulate Hurleys memory so he doesn't give the islands position away ?

Morning LoCos!

Zort, you're killing me this week. :-)

I like your ideas 2costa.

Thanks for the links Memphish.

As for "there's no place like home" for the Losties, I guess it all boils down to what the meaning of home has become for each of them. I hated living in the NY Hudson Valley by myself, but after 30 years of living there, it was sad for me to leave the few special favorite places that I had, and of course my friends and church. After 16+ years, I can see how Danielle would feel like staying I suppose.

Zort70 said...

The reason I'm posting a lot recently is that I've had a few problems with my leg this last week and a bit, and have not been able to get out of the house so I'm having to find other outlets for communication with the outside world.

All is getting better with my leg now, I can stand, sit and lie down without being in agony, which is more than I could do on Monday !

My question to the pod(cast) people was this:

How do you think the four characters captured by the Others at the end of season 2 (Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sawyer) correlate with the four traveling friends of The Wizard of Oz (Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman and Lion)?

I would also add the following question, upon further reflection:

Which of those four found what they were looking for, and in what way did they find it?

Ange said...

tbp- WOW what a great question!
My .02:
Lion= Hurley (the rest aren't as cut and dry for me...I couldn't decide).

I do think that Hurley has found what he was looking for. I think he was unhappy and also a little afraid of living. Hence hiding his feelings with food and sort of dead end jobs and such.

I think that on the island he confronted his fear, learned to accept himself (confidence with Libby), and realize he has worth (ie the bus on the beach and how he saved the day). He found his courage, but it was already there within him.

Unknown said...

ange - That's the one I found to be the easiest, too. Especially with the DHARMA van in the S3 finale. :)

I had it breaking down this way:

Hurley: The Cowardly Lion
-Size, demeanor both fit.
-When the Wicked Witch sent the Flying Monkeys to get Dorothy, she initially told them to ignore the Lion.

Sawyer: The Tin Woodman
-I really wanted to make him the Lion, but Hurley was too perfect.
-Obviously he's a work in progress. I'm not so sure he's found what he's looking for yet. He certainly hasn't developed the ability to love.
-When he was captured by the Flying Monkeys, the Tin Woodman was dropped into a crevasse and broken to pieces. Sawyer was dropped into a holding pen and psychologically picked apart by the Others.

Jack: Dorothy
-Yeah, it seems like Dorothy should be the one girl in the group, but think about Jack's determination throughout the series. He wants to get off that damn island and go home more than anyone. It's made him do some strange things.
-Sadly, we know from the S3 finale that he found what he was looking for. As it turns out, Home for Jack was just as bleak a place as Kansas turned out to be for Dorothy. She knew she could be happy in Oz, and struggled to get back and bring her whole family with her (later books, o'course).

That leaves

Kate: The Scarecrow
-This is by far the toughest match (no pun intended). But like the Scarecrow, she's only got one fear. For the Scarecrow, it was a lighted match. For Kate, it's a cage.
-When the Scarecrow was captured by the Flying Monkeys, he was torn to shreds. Kate, in turn, was stripped naked and remade into Ben's weird fantasy girl.

Anyone else wanna weigh in?

Unknown said...

Oh, I forgot. Sawyer was given a fake heart to make him think he had been changed by the Others.

Unknown said...

Last consecutive post, promise.

I liked the annotations and footnotes in the edition of WWoZ I read. It stated that the book is essentially a treatise on recognition and self-recognition. Masked identities and realization of inner character. That's a very LOST dynamic.

2costa said...

to go with the sayer as tinman analogy i think i mentioned that locke/sawyer share a destiny and together my up one person. The tinman darth vader comparison is very relavent. Vader started getting less and less human just as the tinman. Locke physically lost his legs like the tinman, but sawyer has been the moral tinman, killing the shrimp shack guy was like his first cyerbernetic limb like vader and each killing brings him deeper and deeper into the dark side. Sawyer wasn't a killer before shrimp shack, yet after he killed cooper he killed zeke in cold blood like two episodes later, quite a flurry. So instead of phyically losing his humanity he is morally losing it. I think sawyers will be a major player in the future, i gotta think the island wanted more from him than just killing cooper and zeke. To me its almost like whoever is controlling the timeline purposesly set up sawyer his whole life to be the killer he has become, just like sayid's torture skills...

2costa said...

plus you had to love the way sawyer killed cooper in the same fashion that princess leaha killed jabba the hutt with the chain. Luke and The princess twins, coincidence???

memphish said...

Nice question TBP. I'll try to put a little different spin on it.

Hurley = Dorothy because he's really the only one who has anything to go home to. I'm not sure I buy this either, but it's just a suggestion. He never really seems that interested in getting home; he's a roll with the punches guy, but I think he'd still be happy to get home and would be able to make a life once he got home.

What do you think happened to Jack between Seasons 1 and 3 to make him such a Dorothy? In Season 1 he's digging in at the caves; never manning the signal fire; not particularly hopeful that the raft will work. He's much more about making a safe life on the Island than worrying about getting off it. I guess what changed was the cage sex. It always puzzled me why Ben would hold out "home" as a lure to Jack. Threatening Kate would have worked much faster.

I definitely think Sawyer is the Tinman. That's been set up since mid S1 with the "I Never" game and Sawyer's I've never been in love. I think with Sawyer he came close to getting his heart, but he's masking his identity again. Of course falling in love with psychotic Kate didn't help. I also think post-S3 he's back in the ravine so to speak. Killing the real Sawyer, this shallow relationship with Kate has left him in pieces at the bottom of himself, again.

Kate = the cowardly lion? She has a problem with fear again shown since S1 and her using Jack's technique of counting to five. As TBP said fear of being trapped is the prime motivator for Kate. The flashforward seems to show that she's somewhat succesfully dealt with this need to run. She's in one place with someone which is a change for Kate.

Which leaves Jack = the scarecrow. Jack doesn't think he's a leader; in his dad's eyes he makes poor decisions about which medical cases to tackle, which causes to champion which isn't smart. Even when his life proves these ideas wrong, absent that piece of paper from his dad, I don't know if Jack will ever believe it. Sawyer tried to give it to him with the revelation of his encounter with Christian in Sydney. I don't think that has permitted Jack to move on though. The FF shows that Jack once again thinks he's made the wrong choice.

As I stated somewhere before, I think each character exhibits traits from each of the WWOO which is what's great about LOST. We don't have one-dimensional characters. All of them need and exhibit brains, heart and courage at various times.

i'd love to have a STAR WARS/LOST discussion, there are plenty of references to the film on the show, or just movie references in general like tha apocolypse now nod when sawyer is barefoot on a mission to kill kurtz i mean cooper with a ceremonial blade. memphish - You know, I'd gotten so used to "Put me on the sub" Jack that I'd kind of forgotten about "Let's move off the beach" Jack. The Screw in the Zoo certainly plays a part in his shift.

I wonder if Jack's decision to go to war against the Others was a turning point, though. Remember, Tom had told him "This is our island." Jack was particularly granite-jawed about that, and it's unlikely that his decision to go home would have come out of that confrontation. But when they caught Ben, and discovered the truth, I think the switch in Jack's brain flipped. He decided that he was going to leave that Island over their dead bodies. It's the best kind of permission to leave.

Amused2bHere said...

Wow. Such great comments. I'm having fun just keeping up with the discussion.

Zort, I'm glad your leg is getting better. Please don't forget about us when you are up and around again. I like the way you think. (And I wouldn't rule out a LoCo Movie Club in the future...)

I agree with Memphish's observation that all the characters show brains, heart, and nerve at different times. That's why it's so hard to find direct parallels to WWoZ.

I don't necessarily find Kate to be a Dorothy though. She doesn't want to go home. I agree she's more like the Lion in her 'issues'. Yet it must have taken a lot of courage to blow up her mom's house with Wayne in it. Anyone can plot murder but how many can carry it out in cold blood like that? (I still say "you go, girl!")

Jack is more Dorothy like in his desire to go home. But did he have the power to do so all along? I guess he always had the surgical skills to heal Ben and make the deal to go home, but he didn't use it for his own selfish gain. It was only when he saw his friends "helping themselves" that he said get me the h--- off this island. Yet I can see how Jack needs to use the brains he has, and how hard/broken his heart is. It's like he has these qualities but doesn't know how to use them, like the wwoz characters.

Since "Straw Man" is a term related to a type of con (see Wiki's Straw Man entry) I think an argument for Sawyer can be made. Yet I can see both Straw and Tin man in him. Maybe he and Locke take turns, eh?

Sorry for writing a book. I had more to say than I thought I did.

I just rewatched the S1 finale and it puts Kate even more in the Lion category for me. She has to put herself in position to prove her courage and to prove herself to both herself and her friends by coming along just to carry the dynamite.

Jack's overwhelming desire to save his friends at the expense of himself is Dorothy-like. As was pointed on either by Ange or on the podcast, Dorothy said she could never kill (like a doctor; first do no harm) which was the deal for her to be able to get home, but she still wanted to help her friends get what they desired.

Until having listened to this most recent show it never occurred to me that there was a book called the Wizard of Oz. I've only known about the movie. Fascinating stuff. Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking glass are some of my faves. I'm looking forward to the next show!

Ange said...

LOL vargas! I had a colleague at work that didn't know WWoO was a book either. I gave her mine and told her to ignore the margin notes about Lost;)

I think the best part of this book club for me is that I'm getting to books I should have read ages ago.

I'm doing Alice now, and I'm not going to lie...I am having a hard time connecting it because I keep getting pulled into the story. I think I'm going to have to read it a second time in order to take notes.

Hope everyone enjoys the long weekend!

Thanks for that link Dark Aardvark. It was a good chuckle.

Anyone here got a circle of friends like that?

V.A. Jeffrey said...

Wow it has been a year hasn't it? I'm going to make it a point to read AIWL and TTLG in between watching Lost Season's 1-3. There are so many shows and films that are inspired by Lewis Carroll's books. I think that you could even argue that that are some similar themes between Lost and The Matrix and they both carry Alice In Wonderland Themes.

Is anyone over here following Afterworld? It's an online video comic that posts new episodes on myspace (you don't have to have a myspace account to watch). It's very much like The Stand. There are 16 episodes as of today. They post 1 a day M-F and there are 130 episodes total. There's also a website, but last I checked it only had the first 10 episodes.

Thanks again to The Book Police for hooking us up with that wonderful site! (pssst, Melissa! We are reading just TTLG, right? Or Alice's Adventures in Wonderland too? If both, then we can read both there too.)

Good morning everyone, and happy back to work! Ditto on Chucklez. It's so nice for people when things seem to smooth out.

As far as Project Gutenberg, they also have Turn of the Screw which comes in at about 76 pages (if you like to print). The two Alices there if printed with font as is come out to just over 60 pages. I love e-sources, but personally I just have to have the book on paper.

Have a great day kids!

Melissa_Lossa said...

Happy birthday all you lucky losties! :)

Sorry I've been AWOL - conference for work, then vacation, and now buried in work. Whew!

amused - yes, we are reading both Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. At David's suggestion, I think we're only going to do one podcast, though, since the two books tie right into one another.

thebookpolice - is there a reason that you can't join us for the podcasts? Because you have the best ideas the next day! :)

I know I'm late, but here's my take on the characters:

Hurley: Tin Man - Hurley felt that he was unlovable, while all the time, he was so caring to everyone else. I think he's found what he's looking for in that he learned to love romantically (Libby) and as a friend (Charlie).

Kate: Cowardly Lion - Kate is always on the run and instead of facing her fears, she hides from them. She didn't have the courgae to stand up to her father, so she blew him up; she couldn't face her husband, so she drugged him. I don't think she has found what she looking for - even in the flash forward, we see that she won't face whatever it is that Jack knows.

Jack: Dorothy - Jack just wants to go home, now. As I said in the podcast, I don't think it's because he has anything to go back to. I just think that in Jack's mind, what you do after the plane crash is try to get home. And as Dorothy, he finally got home, but then realized that it wasn't as great as he thought, and he probably should have stayed where he was.

Sawyer: Scarecrow - Sawyer has been led in one way or another his whole life. First by following Cooper, then by the guy who tricked him into killing shrimp shack guy (thank you for the name, 2costa!), then by Locke, Ben and pretty much everyone else on the island with an agenda. However, at the same time, he has had some real moments of brilliance with his cons and his actions on the island. I don't think he's quite there yet, but he's on his way.

I know I'm late to the party, but there you have it! :)

memphish said...

Good job ML. The idea of Hurley as the Tin Man makes me sad because both of those people that Hurley loves are gone now. I suggested on another blog today that Hurley and Claire should bond over their losses. Maybe that's not quite the crazy idea I meant it to be. (Ship name would be PBR - Peanut Butter and Ranch).

The thing about Jack that's really different from Dorothy is that its not really himself he's so concerned about getting home, it's the other 30+ people and with good reason given Sun's pregnancy death sentence. He even says to Kate something like I want Ben to see every one of us leave, then I'm going to kill him. I think TTLG Island Jack would have sacrificed his own return ticket for any of the others. That's why Future Jack's despair is so interesting. Will Jack put himself before others? Is this what's driving him or is it something else? But this also confuses me. Why isn't he doing anything about getting Zack and Emma, the Tail Section kids off the Island too?

Only 154 more days until LOST if it comes back on Feb. 6th. (I read that somewhere. Don't hold me to the math being correct.)

TakesaVillage said...

codysmom,
Enjoy your Birthday with much happiness and love.
melissa_lossa,
I liked your characters.Maybe Jack should read those Oz sequels to find out how Dorothy got back there.
One thing I liked about the book was that The Tin Man,The Lion, and the Scarecrow were offered the
head job in the lands they traveled through.

thanx for the credit Melissa, i have my suspiciouns that the t2000 was working for mittleos/dharma and sent sawyer to not only make his first kill, but also to make sure he was in austalia to assure he was on flight 815. After all this smokey smoke and mirrors and becoming people,i think more than ever that cooper was not the real cooper, either smokey or a cooper from a differnt time, because the cooper we knew of was supposedely on the run in mexico for throwing john out the window, it always struck me as weird how much vitriol cooper had towards locke and sawyer. I suspect hurley will have some conflicted feelings if it is revealed that libby was dharma or mittleos. I just wonder is dave was always dharma messing with his head

Melissa_Lossa said...

memphish - you're right, Hurley as the Tin Man is a little sad. Remember though, in the book, the Tin Man wanted a heart so that he could love the girl that he was originally going to marry. He said that when he got a heart, he was going to go back and marry her, but he didn't - he went to rule the Winkies instead.

I actually think that Hurley and Claire would make a good match! I also think that Sawyer and Hurley will become better friends this season, now that Charlie is gone and they have the shared experience of the beach invasion.

Black Swan said...

Thanks again for all the great birthday wishes (yay, pary horns!!) I got tickets to see the play, "Lion King"!

I have only seen the movie, but I had fun coming up with some analogies to WWOO:

Whoever controls smokie is the wizard, could be a complicated answer (jacob, ben, or even someone or some group that we haven't met yet).

Jack is the tin man. The tin man always cries and so does Jack!!!! Before being on the island, he seems to have a bad bedside manner, doesn't handle his marriage or divorce well, and even seems uncaring about his father in life or in death (just wants to get him home for burial-to get it done with). Matters of the heart are challenging for him. He hasn't found his redemption yet, but is making progress because he is starting to know that intelligence and persistence can't "solve" everything. He has been inspired by Rose's faith, witnessed the dignity and acceptance of death by Boone, and has shown true love by helping Kate and Sawyer.

Locke is Dorothy.... He, too, starts out quite naive (and even childlike in his love for his "Father" and playing games all the time). BUT, he is ultimately going to be the one to expose the wizard. He has been underestimated, just like Dorothy, and he couldn't kill, but found a way to get it done (with Cooper). He also finds strength in himself by belonging to a group; what he would call a "family". Also like Dorothy, it is Locke's journey which seems to bring out the best in others so they can realize their worth.

Sawyer is the lion. He's all growl, but is really scared deep down. He's still that little boy hiding under the bed. Sawyer thinks that "being above everyone" with his nasty nick-names, seclusion, and even cons will keep him a safe distance from others, so they won't find out how vulnerable he really is. He's still working on his courage. I'll know he's making progress when we see him cry.

Hurley is the scarecrow. He's the most friendly and loved character. He's also the best friend and the most empathetic. Hurley never gave himself enough credit to do anything more than work at a fast-food dive and just be a bum, still living with his mom. He doesn't think he's smart, but he does smart things, like making a list of the losties to compare to the list of those actually on the plane and making the golf course as a relaxing diversion from their plight. I loved the season 3 finale with Hurley crashing through the Others with the VW van!! I hope he gets the kudos he deserves from the rest of the Losties for that one!

I guess that leaves Kate with being Toto. Yeah, I'm good with that.... lol!

memphish said...

I like those Codysmom. You can definitely make a case of Jack living a life that's rusted into place. And I like Hurley as the Scarecrow. The Scarecrow is everyone's favorite just like our man Hurley. Hurley's a great encourager and he's very good at putting things into perspective.

Enjoy the Lion King. It's great.

Can't believe we have to wait 'til FEBRUARY!!!!!!!!!

With all the LoCo's on board for the Fantasy League...we can have our own little competition here to see who got the most points after each episode!

(Yes, Takes a Village...we're on baby watch...2 weeks to go! You guys will be among the first to hear! LOL)

Ange said...

Okey-dokey..I submitted my choices for the fantasy league. What a fun idea, and ditto THANKS Maven and memphish for posting about it.

I was kind of like codysmom in that there really was no reason for my choices. Okay well, I did go for people that annoy me the least;)

I was going to focus on the points thing, but with flashbacks and flash forwards frankly, there really is no strategy that I could come up with and stick to! Cant wait!

PS: Hooray "baby watch" maven!

maven said...

Ange: I know. Who knows what TPTB have in store for all the characters next year! There's no way to predict who can get the most points in all the different groups. It's almost a random thing right now! Best of luck to everyone in the League.

Capcom said...

They way Season 3 went, we can't really even predict who who will do the jungle boogy for the big 15 points either...Juliet and Goodman, whoodathunk?! There we were, waiting for a flashback with Juliet and Ben smooching because of their "history"!

Hey LoCos, remember a while back when TPTB or one, or some, of the actors hinted that the Others might be more than they seem to be, or something like that? Like, they were superhumans or manimals something. :-) Did anything happen that really fleshed that out or flattened the rumor? I mean, I know that they are not manimals, but was there something that I missed? Or was it just a deflated rumor? Remember when we were kind of thinking that Ethan might be superhuman? I guess that Patchy never staying dead was sort of like that maybe.

Cool_Freeze said...

Yeah. I think he's a robot. hehehehe

nah I really don't know.

What WAS Juliet and Ben's history anyway??? If they meant the spat in the kitchen, that is ridiculous. Even just the fact that he didn't let her go home is not history if you think about it.

I guess I just want a BIGGER history than that.

Gang: I had to put Pumpkin to sleep. I'm crying as I type this. It turned out he was bitten by a Black Widow and not a snake. The snake anti-venom did nothing and he was getting worse. There is a Black Widow anti-venom shot, but human hospitals only carry it and they keep for themselves. Plus it costs $1,200 for one gram and there's not guarantee it will work! So, with the advice of the Vet, I wanted to end his suffering.

I'll leave his avatar up for now in his memory, but I think I'll have to change it (if I remember how). Thank you for all your kind thoughts. He was a great friend.

Hey Scoutpost
I've thought about you this summer with that record heat wave you've been having. Hope you've been keeping cool.

1800 LFL entries! I hope Dark has enlisted some help for tallying the points. This is way beyond Jay & Jack's S3 contest or Fantasy Lost which did a similar, less complicated fantasy league last year.

Hi Loco's,
Would someone please call Dan (Chucklez3); just in case he hasn't heard about the LFL.I think he would love it.
Thanks.

Good Morning Losties. takes a village I just sent chucklez a MySpace message. I'm sure someone already did, but better to be safe.

I also finally finished the Alices and posted some ideas on Fenris's Lost Bullet Points I thought there wasn't much to say about these books, but once I got going it was clear that I was wrong!

Hope everyone is having a great week so far. Oh, and a question, I downloaded and installed the TalkShoe stuff from their site and made an account. Is that all I need to be able to join chat for the podcast?

PS: Happy Late birthday ib4uc, and happy birthday today EF (wherever you are :D)

Morning LoCos! In my rewatching I've finally made it to Season 2 which leads to my LQOTD this morning. Will Season 4 start with a song?

Thanks to everyone who checks in over at my little rantings and ravings. There still going on M-F, but I try not to clog this place up to much with duplication.

Hey, everyone!

I'm mostly posting because I wanted to be comment 200. :)

I signed up for the fantasy league this week - I've never done one before, but it sounds like fun!

ange - you should be all set for the podcast. Talkshoe's pretty easy to use.
