Just a quick Note:

Many of the past episodes of the podcast are unavailable. This is due to some personal convictions which made me want to remove a bunch of unlicsened music. In a couple of weeks I'll start uploading old episodes without the music in question. If you have any questions feel free to let me know.

Also, don't forget to join Steve and I on Friday at 10:30pm for a live talkshoe podcast.

I bought Wrinkle In Time at WalMart last night ($4.88!), so hopefully I will have some time to read it - maybe on the 4th.

memphish said... 2costa, I heard that about Juliet's sister and nephew, but it's just speculation at this point. We didn't get a good look at the woman, and the boy could be the right age I suppose.

I don't think it can be Rachel. She lived in Florida, and Jack was in LA.

Hey everyone, stopping in to catch up with people still here and posting… no matter what the topic (book or epis)…I’m glad so see people are still here ;-) hopefully I'll catch this podcast too (2 in a row!) but for now... here's some thoughts from the last post..

acewebguy-
your thoughts on the Truman show… I actually am also re-watching epis… I’m wondering if it doesn’t help your theory that Desmond tells Mr. Widmore that he worked in set design for the Royal Shakespeare company…. is it all a scene? a sick, sadistic dramatic production? does it go into the “tragedy” discussion

anyone…what are mobisodes?

re: re-occurance of watership down… I think all your points are great, but I also think that Melissa Lossa’s questions from the podcast are actually right on the money… you end up with mythic heroes, villains and stories… once true, and over time, spun into tales of supernatural-type intervention… ultimately you end up with characters that are larger than life… I think we already see pieces of this in Ben’s story…. but I bet there’s much more to come…

memphish…if I only had more time, I’d love to come and read your blog! Stopped in once to peruse… it looked great and your questions are excellent! I just started Catch 22 also!

2 Costa- very interesting thoughts about Jack demanding the pills from Sawyer… I’d also add how empathetic he was to Charlie when he realized Charlie was kicking heroine….

Sigh… where does the time go!

Have a wonderful 4th- here is to the freedom we enjoy that is so hard fought for- and a thanks to those who have fought for it, are fighting for freedom now, or gave their lives to protect it!

Hey, it's getting easier and easier to get in the Top Ten! LOL

Listening to podcast now...

Just wanted to add my wishes for a Wonderful July 4th tomorrow! Remember those fighting for our freedoms. Everybody have a safe holiday!

Lisa said... anyone…what are mobisodes?

Mobisodes = Mobile phone Episodes

They are short videos produced specifically for mobile phones. I think it come from webisodes which are for exclusive web content. It looks like it will be for Verizon phone, but I'm sure they will show up on YouTube.

Here is the latest info from Lostpedia:

On June 14th 2007 Cuse and Lindelof said in the fall of 2007 there will be a series of "Lost" mobisodes featuring the entire cast. The mobisodes, about 90 seconds each, will give the hardcore "Lost" viewer more information that they probably weren't going to get through the show itself. What it won't be, they said, was a mini version of "Lost." "It needs to be interesting enough and well produced enough that people feel they're getting enough bang for their buck, even if it's free, the bang for their time," Lindelof said. The negotiations for the talent took a long time, but they wanted to make sure that all of them were involved in the mobisodes. "Nobody wanted to see two people sitting on a beach that we've never heard of talking and saying, 'Hey, did you hear what Jack and Kate did today?' You want to see Jack and Kate. It's taken us three years to get those deals in place," Lindelof said to The Hollywood Reporter

On June 27th 2007 Cuse mentioned that the 90-second Mobisode stories will revolve around a unique mystery, more closely rooted to the LOST mythology than 'Bad Twin'

memphish said...

Lisa and Acewebguy, I've always wondered if this was going to turn out to be The Truman Show as well, perhaps for Alvar Hanso or Widmore or Paik alone - kind of like those rich guys who buy famous paintings and don't let anyone else see them. After all the original idea was a real "Survivor."

Lisa - mobisodes are 2 minute "stories" which are aired first by a cell phone provider (Verizon I believe in this case). Then they'll be available online. They are just little snippets to give us some content, though I believe the idea behind these is that you can see them or not see them and still be able to keep up with the show, like TLE.

The Office did a series of them which they put on the web and called them webisodes. They were a brief story about the accountants trying to run down missing money. They even won a Daytime Emmy for them.

Last summer, TPTB said the idea for the mobisodes would be that Hurley finds a video camera and each castaway records a little bit for their loved ones back home. I don't know if that's still the case or not though. Hopefully we'll find out at ComiCon.

And finally, thanks for checking out the blog. There's been a bit of chatter in the comments lately if you want to give them a look. Here's the link if you get some free time. I'll keep posting versions of the questions here too for people who want one stop shopping. :D

back to the last post, I think part of why Ben shot locke for hearing jacob was to further convince him that jacob was real. If locke was truly a threat to ben's primacy he would have shot him to death. Who is to say what we saw in the cabin was jacob, especially if they havent done a final casting on jacob yet.

2costa said...

the way karl and other others show this awe of Jacob leads me to believe there is another form of jacob on the island, locke wouldnt be the first one to question bens exclusive relationship with jacob. There has to be more than a breaking latern, light show and "help me" to create that sense of awe. Jacob might be special like walt or locke and thats how ,just a theory, ben could trap an astral projection of jacob. Maybe what we saw was jacobs soul and ben trapped it with the ring of dust and jacobs soul said help me cause he wants to move on to the next realm?

memphish said...

2costa, I think you're on to something. I think the people Ben and Mittelos have brought to the Island are "special" like Ben and Walt and Locke are "special" so that they are able to commune with Jacob quickly. I think Juliet's husband being hit by the bus is evidence of this as well as her success in her sister's pregnancy and that, plus perhaps some Room 23 conditioning, is what explains her awe of Jacob after only 6 months on the Island.

That reminds me that our LOSTies have only been on the Island 3 months. That's hard to keep remembering. Maybe after 3 more months they would feel the same about Jacob too.

Hey, everyone -

I had another thought about Watership Down. Well, I actually had it during the podcast, but I didn't want to go off on some crazy tangent my first time around. :) Lisa's comment about the mythology/hero aspect of the story reminded me of it.

As we talked during the podcast, I realized how much Watership Down reminded me of the Aeneid, which if you haven't read it, is kind of a sequel of sorts to the Iliad. After the fall of Troy, the Trojan Aeneas leads a group of survivors out of the ruins, to found a new city, which will eventually become Rome. He is set to this task by a vision or a prophecy, and he has to be constantly prodded along the way. In the course of the journey from Troy to Italy, they shipwreck in Carthage (Africa), where Aeneas falls in love with the queen Dido, but is forced to leave her behind and continue the quest (she throws herself out of a window onto a flaming bed of swords because of this - yikes). Once they reach Italy, they set up camp, and then have to fight a war with the locals, who are understandably not too happy with having Rome founded on top of them.

Sound familiar? I think there are really interesting parallels to both Watership and Lost. In Watership, the journeys are very similar (leaving the home in ruin, stopping at a city/warren along the way that seems like a good place to stay but turns out to be a distraction, finally founding a new home and waging war with an already established people). In Lost, there are some parallels to be drawn between Aeneas and Jack - both the reluctant heroes, who just want to go home.

Ironically, the Aeneid is unfinished. Virgil died before he wrote the ending, although there is much speculation that it would have ended with Aeneas' marriage to a local woman (Juliet?).

Sorry for the long rant - this has been in my brain for about a week now. :) And the Aenead has a special place in my heart, as I translated several chapters of it throughout my Latin classes in college.

Capcom said...

Great posts peeps! About the Truman Show angle, I wonder how I would feel if at the end, the entire Island and everyone on it (barring some of the accidental inhabitants), was the actual psychology experiment of the D.I.? If TPTB did it right, which I believe that would, it could work out. I could deal with that, providing they answer most of the mysteries inbetween. :o)

maven said...

Hey, Melissa_lossa: Great analogy between Lost-Watership Down-Aeneid! It sure makes sense to me. Throughout history and literature this theme has played out...people/individuals/nations trying to find themselves and just attempting to grab a place for themselves and having to put up with obstacles in their way.

Also, impressed with your Latin translation skills. Hubby and I tried to teach ourselves Latin as a "fun" and different thing to do...we just kept hitting a wall and gave up!

Melissa_Lossa said...

Thanks, maven. :) I had a great Latin teacher, which made all the difference. I won't lie though - there were days when I came to class with translations that made no sense whatsoever!

The Aenead to me is the perfect example of the reluctant hero - which is also a great way to describe our buddy Jack, and Desmond, too. It also fits into that argument between fate and free will. Aeneas wanted nothing more than to just give up and settle wherever it was convenient, but the gods wouldn't let him.

2costa said...

it reminds me of john from cincinatti memphis that only the egotistical think that the power in from themselves and not god. The guy on the show that levitates goes back and forth between thinking he floats cause of his years of spiritual training and thinking that it is something bigger outside of himself. I think that locke will never worship jacob, he may come to understand him better, but anypower that jacob has is harnessing the islland's power not jacobs. To me its like when catholics start worshipping the saints or giving them to much due, i mean mostly before martin luther and the reformation. If the saints are imbued with miricle powers they are still the tool of god only harnessing a fraction of his power. I think the writers drew the analogy on the islan Ben and his church of jacob are the established dogmatic religion on the island where they get bogged down in sacrifices(cooper) and ritual, where as Locke is more the martin luther where he believe it isnt about your wordly works rather faith alone(in the island and not jacob). I think part of why ben played it the way he did with shooting locke for hearing jacob was to convivnce him in jacobs primacy much as you mepmphis are now convinced. Locke used to get caught up in the ritual(hatch, boone), but now richard has allowed him to look past even the others and there doctrine and go straight to the island for answers. I also think that both locke and ben ultimately allowed jack to call naomis ship cause the only way to get rid of the threat anfd the endless search teams that would look for naomi at the island need to be lured there and then ultimately killed or stranded to protect the island.

2costa said...

it took locke being fooled over and over remember after he let boone die he has crying pounding on the hatch asking the island what it wanted and saying he had done everything it had asked. only to later find out it was desmond that turned on the light, serendipity?,yes, but jacob i dont think so.

2costa said...

as far as ive been shown Ben can not comminicate with jacob and his list and most of his instructions come from ben. In the marxist way that religion is the opiate of the people. Ben needs the supernatural guise of jacob to make his message earier to swallow and if jacob was so much to be feared i dont think ben would risk pretendind to hear jacob and face the his wrath. If jacob was godlike why would he need lockes help, to me he seems like a pissed off spirit trapped in a ghostbuster storage device...I still think there is forces that we still are not clear about that controll smokey and i think the island's frequency is just tuned to locke, mikhail, and rose's makeup where as locke and rose were nothing special in the australian healing spot. diffenrt frequencies for differnt people. Thats why i think that pit mass grave may have island blocking powers cause lockes legs where messed up again and walt didnt pull him out he gave him a pepe talk so that he would swallow his pride and crawl out of the pit without the use of his legs...

2costa said...

well locke in australia not at the healers

memphish said...

2Costa, I'm not convinced that Jacob does only communicate via Ben. The first we ever hear of Jacob is from Pickett and Pickett says that "Shephard isn't even on Jacob's list." It seems to me if Ben was making up Jacob's list then he would have put Jack on it in order to secure his surgery in a less round about way than the one he went.

And I find it hard to believe that obviously very smart people like Ethan, Goodwin, Alpert and Juliet wouldn't question Ben about why he's the only one who could communicate with Ben. After all Locke figured out to ask that question in less than a week, and Locke isn't the brightest crayon in anyone's box. I'm looking forward to learning more about Jacob and his mysterious ways. Obviously we don't have anywhere near enough info yet to come up with a full theory of Jacob.

2costa said...

ok but you said it your self if julliette got her sister healed by jacob she would be in awe, what if ben used science ala dharma or mittleos bio to cure her and acted like it was jacob that did it. I have never heard anyone say anything about jacob saying or doing anything except for ben when he said that jacob told him to push up the raid on the beach a day. All they refer to is how great jacob is or refer to his list, but i accept you can be right i just dont know, none of us do. The sense i had in the man behind the curtain is ben knew where jacob was and that it the ring of ash held him in the cabin and the pile of asor whatever kept him in the rocking chair. I dont beleive that jacob talks to ben at all, he would not be threatened by jacob saying two words to locke if they have entire conversations together, and even by your logic ,ben didnt hear what jacob said to locke, why is that? i think Richard and MIkhail know that jacob doesnt talk to ben, thats why richard was so bent on locke going to see him so they could at least have one person that does. The way mikhail seemd uneasy about ben taking locke to jacob made me think that mikhail was smart enough to know that locke might see through the so called parler trick, much like in the wizard of oz when the wizard did his last big scary light show right before they discovered him behind the curtain. Memphis i do respect your opinion..

2costa said...

asor=ash or

2costa said...

the scene in the purge showed me at least that richard set up ben to help in the purge and when it was done ben seized control during the momentary power vacume and has never let it go, thats why richard is trying to get locke to replace ben, for the same reason that i think ben wants to replace other hardcore mittlos guys with 815'ers so they are not all loyal to off island interests...

2costa said...

like i said if tghe show cane takes off maybe richard is the next to go, but he could do double duty...

Hello everyone! Just dropping in to read a bit and say Happy 4th! I got an email today from FYE about pre-ordering LOST Season 3 for 29.99 after a mail in rebate of 10.00. I did this for the last set so I just wanted to give you the heads up.

Amused2bHere said...

Thanks, cattygirl!

I'm sorry I'll have to miss the live podcast on Friday, I have a wedding to attend that night (I guess the happy couple get a hefty discount for Friday night). oh well, I'll catch the recording.

I have another wedding tomorrow, ON the 4th believe it or not. I guess the bride wanted to ensure fireworks on her wedding night....lol

Safe and happy, y'all!

memphish said...

Cattygirl, what is FYE? And did they deliver the day of the release? Last year, I got them at Target the day they came out for around $35, but that came with a $5 Target Gift Card, so $30 and day of release delivery.

2Costa, I know you're just working the problems out and trying to make me have an internal logic to my own thinking. My husband would tell you that that is where you've gone off track. :-) No worries friend.

Happy 4th of July to everyone! Stay safe with the fireworks, especially if you live in a drought area. You don't want to replace TB Guy as the most hated person in America.

If anyone gets bored today and wants to think about LOST, feel free to check out some of the questions on my blog and the comments. There have been some interesting comments lately. You can use those ideas to prepare for Friday's podcast as many of the posts relate to the first 4 episodes of LOST.

and thank you Memphish for the Target info. I think that is the best deal I've heard so far. Did you order or go to the store, I am a little mixed up in reading your post. :)

FYE.com is For Your Entertainment. They have a store in my nearby mall. Anyway... the delivery took about a week and the rebate even longer, but it was the cheapest deal I found last year so I had to just be patient.

memphish said...

Cattygirl - I got it at the store. The deal was advertised in their Sunday insert the week the DVDs came out, so I don't know whether or not they'll repeat it. I'm pretty sure their price will be pre-order competitive at least the first couple of days it's available. I heard thru the grapevine that by the end of that week they had raised their prices.

Dennis said...

Happy 4th Of July everybody!

Dennis said...

I wouldn't pre-order LOST online, unless you don't have any stores nearby. Local stores will have just as good prices or better, and there are usually in-store exclusives. Just check the ads the Sunday before the release date.

Best Buy had a special exclusive DVD that came with the Season 2 set. It had extra "bonus" scenes, etc.

memphish said...

What were these extra "bonus" scenes Dennis? Were they worth the trip to Best Buy? I hate our local Best Buy.

BTW, here is a picture of the back.

I've never heard of this before and it's not mentioned on Lostpedia, but I see a Best Buy bonus disc for Season 1 on BitTorrent. I'll try do download it...

OK, here is the cover for the Season 1 Best Buy Bonus DVD. Does anyone here have it? I didn't see any on eBay...

Is everyone busy (re)reading "A Wrinkle in Time"?

Small book, comparatively. I may have to go to the Library, I know I have a copy somewhere but I can't find it. That really annoys me, when I know I have something but I cannot locate it. Grrr! No big deal, I can replace the book...but it's the principle of the thing!

Don't ya hate that?

Memphish: I think Adam and Eve are Jack and Juliet. And I think time travel is involved somehow. I'm not sure what the stones mean, but I think that it's significant that Jack has them now.

I could be wrong. lol

Hope it's not too late to talk about Watership Down. I was on vacation last week.

Here's some quotes from the book that when I read them made me think about Lost:

"The danger's coming closer all the time - whatever it is..." (Ch. 3) - losties not knowing what/who is out there waiting to get them

"If I were in your place, I'd be careful whom I picked to talk to." (Ch. 3) - the whole not sharing info/trust thing

"What did these sounds mean?" (Ch. 5 In the woods) - whispers/smoke monster noises

Fiver to Bigwig: "You are closer to death than I." (Ch. 17) - reminded me of what Eko said to Locke - "You're next."

And of course, Bluebell: "Do you know what the first blade of grass said to the second blade of grass?" (Ch. 20)

FYSB said...

Here's a little something to titillate....I came across this on usatoday.com

'Cloverfield': What the heck is it?

One of the coolest things about Transformers actually happened before the movie started: A trailer for an unnamed J.J. Abrams project premiered before the film, and it's been causing huge amounts of speculation and discussion online.

The movie -- its working title is Cloverfield -- appears to be a monster flick told from the point of view of people on the ground. The trailer depicts a group of New York partygoers who are suddenly interrupted by a huge explosion. Go here for a more detailed description and here to watch it on YouTube; if the video disappears, just search "Cloverfield" to find it again.

A website for the flick has popped up, though right now it only features a photo. It will reportedly be directed by Felicity's Matt Reeves and written by Lost's Drew Godard.

The rumors are swirling: Why all the secrecy? Is this an original monster movie, or does Cloverfield have anything to do with Lost? Is it a Godzilla movie? Is it a Voltron movie? Whatever it is, the publicity campaign is already working.

Passafist said...

Well if it's comming out in January, that probably means it's a dog. January is a dumping ground... It's funny how the monster sorta sounds like Smokey in the days before the hatch explosion!!

MY guess is that it is a new Godzilla movie. Nice perspective if it's true. But January!! That usually means wait for video!!

Unknown said...

memphish said...

Chucklez, this site can help you through the puzzles.

2Costa, the rabbit thing was very, very good. It made me think of avacados, then guacamole and then I got hungry. Sorry it took so long to give you feedback.

Unknown said...

i never got a blue star on my screen!!!! what gives???

memphish said...

I never saw the email star, I just clicked a little ways below the bright left hand star and got the email thing.

Unknown said...

3rd one was easy.

Ange said...

I did them all...what is the matter with me!? I think I now officially have an AGR problem. Well a JJ Abrams ARG problem I guess. Chucklez, use the walk through that memphish posted, I think I would have been at it for hours if I didn't peek at the solutions just a little.

2costa said...

i feel like they strung us along til we were joinzing for tle2 and sprung this on us. It like methadone to tle's heroin. and thanks for all the sartastic patronizing back handed props on haas...

Well, I can't even get the first puzzle to appear. Just this message:

"war came, no longer from the elemental nor from the star's rain of fire. The world was again remade, and the glow was as the coming of the sun upon the Earth. The children of the gods were again too few, scattered and divided and among them walked the ancients and those whose thoughts were not as to the towers and the marvels, but to the End and the destruction of the Earth and to the fires from which nothing could escape."

How do you get to the puzzles?

be back later. gonna' "test the waters".

UGH!!

pray for me.

Ange said...

blueheron, are you on the ethanwasright site? That's where the puzzles are.

blueheron13 said...

http://www.ethanhaaswasright.com/ doesn't show anything but a black screen with the text in white that I put in previous post. No puzzles :(

Dennis said...

I think it only shows that page if you don't have Flash installed...

I'm looking at it right now.

Beverly said...

I can't get puzzle 4 and the hint given in the walkthrough spoiler didn't work for me either. I must be sdoing something really dumb. Can anyone give me clue?

Unknown said...

yeah, you need flash.

Unknown said...

up twice, left twice, down four times, left twice, right twice, up twice, right twice, up twice, left four times.

Unknown said...

basically, you have to press the arrow key the direction the clue says to turn the direction of the arrows. then, you have to press the SAME direction to make them move.

blueheron13 said...

Well, I have Flash 9 installed, so I don't know what's wrong.

Oh, well, I'll deal with it next week. Maybe someone else will have the same problem and figure out a solution.

Unknown said...

strange blueheron. wish i could hep. that's weird.

Unknown said...

i guess we've gotten totally caught up now with the puzzles and with the photos on www.1-18-08.com. so, guess we pick up with the ARG on august 1st???

is that what i'm getting??

blueheron13 said...

Nevermind, I re-installed Flash and it's working now. Will check it out next week.

Later

Beverly said...

Thanks Chucklez! I was getting really frustrated that the clue didn't seem to do anything for me. I finished all the puzzles. Well, the walkthroughs anyway - after puzzle 4 I had no patience left for puzzle 5. good thing. I don't think I would have gotten that one.

blue heron that message from above is very close to a clip of rousseau that they cut out of the episode where she stole claires baby, she gave a speach about the others like that hold on ill try to put up a link..

2costa said...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_IFfYkgDmk

tell me this isnt very close to the ethan haas thing

Unknown said...

well........think that rules out "godzilla".

hmmm......operative title: "smokey"???

that sound sorta' sounded like a cross between godzilla and smokey anyway.

2costa said...

omg i just found this one there are some great season three deleted stuff on here

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOoHzh1A2sE

2costa said...

the funniest is when sawyer tells kate to tell jack hi

Beverly said...

2costa, according to a comment on that page, that Rousseau bit was a Babylon 5 narration on top of Lost clips (same actress).

memphish said...

www.ethanhaaswasright.com/helpme has the email clues plus the puzzle for sequence if you, like me, has to move ahead faster than their own brain can carry them.

memphish said...

2costa, that Rousseau scene is fan made. I liked the LOST Moments stuff. It reminded me why you can't trust Juliet. She gave orders for Sawyer and Kate to be killed. And that 2nd deleted scene showed us a more threatening Tom too. Don't trust the Others!

I found a great blog with a summary of everything that has happened so far:

Its hard to believe, but there is already a fake site - http://www.ethanhaaswaswrong.com/

JJ Haters!

The 1-18-08 site has been updated again with a new picture, and you can move them around.
