in the juliet / podium screen shot there are some tops of peoples heads. one looks like it might be cindy(head closest to the hydra symbol)

Yeah, blueheron, there is a code on the back of the puzzles. If you check out my blog, I've transcribed the code from the first three. I have no idea what it means. :)

We need that screen shot!!

Thrasher said: "Sawyer is smarter than Jack but the polar bears are smarter than both of them. And Jack doesn't even know how to put together a kite! LOL (Sorry to hear you're not feeling well.)

I also think that Jack really doesn't know the meaning of his tattoos. We never saw a scene in which actually asked the Bai Ling character what she "marked" him with. (I know I would!) I think Jack is playing a game with Isabel, who seems to know Chinese, to see if he can finally figure out what's on his arm.

Memphish: Interesting theory about Jack being Jacob. Shephard isn't on Jacob's list because Jack is Jacob? And the translation of "He walks amongst us, but he's not one of us" could be interpreted as Jack/Jacob being a leader from the outside world.

I always enjoy Sawyerisms! Sally Slingshot. LOL And Barry from the Brady Bunch. Would that have been before Karl's time? We know that the Others have the ability to record television.

Capcom: Yes, agreed Jack will be with the Others for a while. It's going to take a long time for Jack and Juliette to plan stuff together to get them really home, not the Other's home.

It's interesting that the Other's society has a justice system. Although I didn't really see a jury...Isabel seems to be judge, jury and executioner rolled into one...someone with a lot of power (although she is below Ben in the social structure).

Which screenshot Thrasher? If you mean the trial it's on DarkUFO's screencap page.

blueheron13 said...

Good call, Andy. That does look like Cindy-hair right next to the Hydra logo

LGLM, I agree that the experiments, whatever they are have to do with the people on the Island pre-flight 815 crash. I'd like it if Ben was running a huge (long) con on everyone. I think Ben is now my favorite character.

hey blueheron13
would you say that cindy has a very paige davis hair cut? (from the home improvement show - Trading Spaces . . . hmmmmm)

Do you guys think that Locke could be "in" on the Dharma thing? I have thought from the beginning that he just seems to be TOO in-tune with the island and various explanations about things. What about when Smokey dragged him down in the ground? I just don't know. I have so many questions from so long ago. Every once in a while they just pop up. Maybe everybody chatted this up already, but I haven't been satisfied with anything I have read regarding that yet...

memphish said...

So I'm reading Robert Heinlein's Stranger in Strange Land whose protagonist is a human by genetics but was raised on Mars. And here's what I just read:

"At this point the being sprung from human genes and shaped by Martian thought, who could never be either, completed one stage of his growth, . . . The solitary loneliness of predestined free will was then his with the Martian serenity to embrace, cherish, savor its bitterness, accept its consequences."

Reading this it strikes me that Ben even more so than Jack is Lost's Stranger in a Strange Land. He seems human, but his capacity to absorb information, act with deliberation, be untroubled and unhurried by time (i.e. not enslaved to it) and be part of a group, even its leader, but never really connect with it.

The book's really good (at least the first 2/3rds) if anyone is looking for a book.

Hi, blueheron. Here's what I found:

CBS took over the lead at 10 p.m. with "CSI: NY," 9.3/15. "Lost" posted a 7.6/13, on par with last week's episode. NBC's "Medium" came in at 5.4/9.

Why would Ben have sent Ethan off on a dangerous assignment to observe the Losties? He was their only surgeon (and he was some kind of bigshot in the Mittelos organization)! I guess he probably trusted him, but if he was their only surgeon, why would he put him at risk?

blueheron13 said...

Maven,

My only guess is that The Others didn't think he would be in any danger (arrogance?). Also, if they needed to perform a surgery, they could use The Staff station, and he would be close by.

First off chuck I never meant to be condescending. I think that the mittelos site only contains the correct information as could have been taken from the show. The mouse, the sister the logo, the recruiter, and the pregnancy. IMHO the island map thing and the video was just that fans way of adding intrigue to the mix. None of that stuff was in the episode, and that is why I think that whole section along with any exec bios that aren't Alpert,Juliet, and I don't remember if he had one, but Ethans if there was one.

Chucklez3 said:

hmmm......if a ferry "HAS TO TAKE YOU" anywhere, then it's not attached by land. duh. contradicted yourself there.

I did not. What I was saying is that they wouldn't want their workers to have to walk the length of the island. I can take a ferry from Manhattan to Manhattan. Does not mean it is a different island all together. Just to far to walk.

The Ben/Sawyer thing I mentioned...
They were on Alcatraz (the small island with the Hydra compound.) By what you are saying, you make it sound as if Alcatraz is not the island with the cages and hydra station, so to me it came off as if you were saying that they were on the third island when they looked across to the Lost main island. If this is true then they would have had to go from Island #2 to Island #3 in order to convince Sawyer that he could not get to Island #1. Which to me makes less sense then Time travel. I am not saying this just to disagree with you (you hold a grudge... not me) People are allowed to disagree... I was under the impression that free will sti....(plane crash)

I just don't understand why you think there is a prison anywhere. When the Others take (enemies) they bring them to the Hydra compound. Why? Because it has cages and cells that they can put people in and watch them...AKA Alcatraz. This is where the name came from because this is where they hold people and it is about the size of Alcatraz. I Don't think that Dharma went there and said to themselves. We need a zoology and meteorology area over here and a prison over here, because we all know how riled up those Bhuddist scientists can get. They had barracks yes, which could just reffer to the houses that they are living in now. Empty out all their personal stuff and throw in some bunk beds and you have barracks for a few workers.

That is all I meant... my bad if I confused you.

And you really don't have to resort to name calling and using little nicknames like Genius unless you agree that I am one of course. So I thought you were complaining about the show a lil' bit to much, Sorry!!!
With all the talk of lets not complain anymore I thought that a coment about how TPTB bringing what might have been time travel and a bit of (SCI-FI which they are both fans of) into the show was a little uncalled for.

memphish said...

Poor picsel. We're sorry you're behind too because you added great stuff last week especially with that Hieronymous machine. There didn't seem to be much like that in this week's episode unfortunately for those of us who like to chat.

memphish said...

Wow Kvonhard. Great job with the history of Thai tattoos. Which type of tattoo do you think Jack got? My husband noticed last night that Bai Ling was doing it the "old-fashioned way."

As for the meaning thing--I don't think Jack knew the literal translation just what Bai Ling told him she saw in him. This idea of himself as a leader is something Jack has struggled with ever since we've met him, so I'd guess the tattoo and what it means to him may vacillate between "yeah, I am a leader," and "what a joke, me a leader." You'd have to think he'd realize she was right about the angry and lonely part. This actually reminds me of something Jack once said about "Everybody wants me to be leader until they don't like what I decide." (paraphrase) Ironically (or is it?), the Lostpedia featured article this week is about the Leaders of Lost and #1 in the list is Jack.

ded: as for the mittelos site, that's what i meant. and since everything on the site was INDEED on the show, then yeah. i'd venture to say that there's a third island. and it may not have been in THAT episode, but who said it was based on just that?

eh....either way.

and again, my theories and hypotheses are NOT to be construed as "complaints". i love the freakin show. so, my thing is, you seem to respond a little more abrasively to ME than you do to others. why that is, i don't know. don't really give a pregnant male rat's a$$.

so, because of how you respond to me, THAT'S why i responded to YOUR remarks. that and only that.

hey, i actually thought of you as an okay guy. I really don't know why you tend to try to point out my theories as "flaws". anyway.....
and what i'm saying is "alcatraz" was dubbed by fans. the island was not given that moniker by the writers.

and again, not prison cells. and that was not the initial intent for them.

and yeah, it makes sense. think about it. you KNOW (as dharma employees) that you will be "experimenting" on animals, etc over on that island. whey the hell would you want to "LIVE" in the same area? you wouldn't. therefore, you live on another island. Now, since you have people that will always be on this island and say it has barracks, why not convert the barracks into a prison or whatever? i mean, they have HOUSES. what's the point of barracks then? to house people other than themselves (imho).

;)

and look, as for my comments about the show or the powers that be, why are YOU the "bodyguard" of their feelings? particularly only with me?? "uncalled for"??? for WHAT??? having my opinion and NOT being afraid to voice it???

anyway, whatever.......

so long story short, have your opinions, theories, etc. be happy. but for cripes sake, don't kick crap on MINE and tell me it's chocolate

Since last week, I've been trying to puzzle out the significance of "God loves you as he loved Jacob." I re-read the Bibical account of the twins, Jacob and Esau, of whom God loved Jacob and hated Esau.

2costa gave a brief, yet accurate account of how Jacob tricked his father, Isaac, into giving him Esau's rightful blessing. (The blessing always goes to the eldest son, and although Esau was the first out of the womb, Jacob came immediately thereafter, clutching Esau's heel. "Hot on his heels," some might say! Ha ha!)

Then, when 2costa mentioned that Jacob was the father of 12 sons, who grew up to be the patriarchs of the 12 Tribes of Israel, I had a stunning remembrance! Yes, there were 12 tribes, but in the eight century B.C., 10 of these tribes were exiled and LOST! In fact, they are called "The Ten Lost Tribes of Israel." (Here's an interesting link: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/israel/losttribes.html)

Could it be that the Others think that THEY are one of the Ten Lost Tribes? If so, which one? That would explain the various Old Testament references, and their 'eye for an eye' form of justice.

I don't know where to run with this. Do any of you guys?

Friday's_Child said...

The tribes of Benjamin and Judah were the only two tribes who were NOT lost, and are the forbears of modern-day Israelis.

Capcom said...

Melissa, all those kooky games they have at Barnes and Noble (Simpsons Monopoly, fer cryinoutloud) and they were snooty about a Lost puzzle? Puh. Our Borders has carried the Lost game since Xmas, they're not too good for Lost.

Too bad we can't meet up Memphish!

Thanks for the tattoo info Kvonhard, that cleared up for me why they pummeled Jack! I thought that maybe they were just P.O'd that some white guy was hitting on their big sister. They must look on the tattoo-er as some kind of shaman type persona, and the spiritual tattoo work very much to be kept in-tribe so to speak? Very stupid, Jack. Another "don't tell me what to do" moment.

The discussion about Ethan is also interesting folks, now that you mention it. Yes, why would you send a surgeon to do a risky recon job? I guess the Staff point makes sense, so he could be near the station to man it if necessary.

I'll say this though, I thought that it was very out of character for prissy, goody two shoes, Jack to be making time with a skeevy Bai Ling type chick. Must be a guy thing, like when they get depressed they go for the weird? I dunno. Any clarification here from the men why he would do that? :-p

BTW, happy moving Chucklez. I hope that it doesn't snow on you! Let us know when you get checked in.

Also, lest we inadvertently slander the Biblical Jacob, it was completely his MOTHER'S idea to trick old, blind Isaac into giving Jacob the blessing. Her name, I believe, was Rebecca.

memphish said...

Capcom the shipper name for Jack and Juliet is Jacket. Yuck! Yuck! and Yuck!

I have to say logically I don't know why I am so opposed to this. I've always really liked Jack, but then again I've been married to a good guy surgeon for 17 years. And in terms of who am I most like it is definitely Juliet (yes, I'm an overeducated blonde). But I guess TPTB did such a good job way back in the beginning of the series on selling me on Jack and Kate (Jate for those of you tracking shipper names) that I just cannot stop being invested in that working out. It is utterly illogical and I can't figure it out, but dadgum it I want those two to work out more than Rhett and Scarlett or Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth.

Also, I totally do not trust Kristen because she is a Skate (Sawyer/Kate) skank. Okay, skank is a little harsh, but she has always shipped Skate.

My favorite shipper name is P,B & J for Charlie and Claire although I don't really care if Charlie and Claire are a couple. They're cute, but pretty irrelevant to me at this point. If we'd get back to why on earth Aaron might be important that might change, but it's been an entire season since Aaron mattered.

Sorry guys if the shipper stuff bugs you. I won't discuss the hair on this last episode here because, yes, that would be too girly.

I don't know how I feel about Jack and Juliet yet. But I am really thinking that Kate does not deserve anyone, if she really did just "cage-up" with Sawyer for mere pity reasons. That's just plain mean. No, I don't like it.

memphish said...

Yes, Kate has been on a real downslope since the episode What Kate Did IMO. I loved Season 1 mysterious, tough Kate. I'm still hoping that there will be something more to her breakfast with Ben that will explain super-wimpy most of Season 3 Kate. I feel like her character has gotten the most off course over the series run.

memphish said...

I realized after I hit enter that my wv on that last one was eusuc. That's right up there with Phuket.

I actually had something I wanted to say and the whole ship and wv thing has driven me off course.

We've touched on this a bit about Jack being a Savior, i.e. the Good Shephe(a)rd, but this struck me tonight. The type of leader Jesus was and that Christians are called to be is not the worldly, follow me and figure out how to earn my favor leader, but instead it is the servant leader. The least will be greatest.

Mark 10:42-44 says: Jesus called them together and said, "You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. Maybe Jack's real struggle is not with leadership per se, but with the type of leader he's called to be--the rally round me boys and I'll tell you what to do or the slave of all. Tom kind of drives at this point when he says to Jack, you did this to save them and they just left you.

Just an idea to play with. Of course, I guess the logical outplay of this would be Jack will die to save his friends, and I while I would find that supremely sad, I think it could be satisfying.

Oh, and Maven, you're right about Darcy, especially the Colin Firth BBC Darcy.

Been in lurke mode since my head was hurting so much trying to grasp the time travel thing from last weeks Desmond' episode. I have a question for you. I haven't read or heard anyone comment on this, but when jack was in the sawyer's and kate's love cage, I thought I heard smokey lurking in the background. Go back and watch he scenes with Zeke and Jules and listen to the background. I think smokey is taking notes and maybe Jack will be the next one to 'judge' Jack. What do you think?

memphish said...

jgz350, good to see you. I was wondering where you've been. I agree about the time travel stuff. At this point I'm trying not to think about it.

I haven't rewatched the episode yet, and probably won't get a chance until late in the weekend, but I'll keep an ear out for Smokey. It would be interesting to see him/hear him for sure somewhere other than Island #1. They are going to have to give us names for these islands if they are going to insist on having more than 1.

Later.

Amused2bHere said...

Memphish, that Powell blog has some very good points. Rosicrucians, eh? aye, rabbit, it might.

I recognized Juliet's brand right away. It's the symbol in an elevator for "door close" ->I<-

ok, maybe not.
Could be the universal sign for Management (two hands pointing fingers at each other!)
Or not.

Anyway, good to see some more familiar faces! Bigdog, Shellma, deja vu, long time no see.

memphish said...

amused2behere, I like your take on the symbol. But where are the elevators on the island? Actually the Management thing could be real given what we're beginning to see with the Others power plays.

Amused2bHere said...

Well, there could be elevators in the Hydra station, to get to the underwater levels and so on, but that isn't the point. They might not know that we use that symbol for elevators, just that it's a symbol for shutting someone out, marking her as an outsider.

Not a very visible place to put it though. So she's "marked". Big deal. Who's gonna know?

Did they pick the small of her back because that is where Ben will have his scar? Maybe it's his brand, and it marks her as belonging to him.

Hmmmmmmmmm

ib4uc said...

ib4uc said...

Speaking of the branding, I haven't seen anything as to the "real" meaning of it. Maybe it means nothing, but doesn't everything about everything mean something in this show?

And, yes, I agree with amused. Why put it somewhere where no one will see it?

memphish said...

amused2behere said Did they pick the small of her back because that is where Ben will have his scar? Maybe it's his brand, and it marks her as belonging to him. That's an interesting idea too. How cute, matching scars. That would bring the total number of people "marked" this episode to 3 counting Jack and thus the new triangle begins.

memphish said...

As for the mark where no one can see it, it's like Jack's tattoo in a sense in that Juliet will always know she is marked and what it means. Similarly, Jack even when wearing a shirt with sleeves knows that he is marked and what it means whereas most people he encounters don't read Chinese and even if they do, the literal translation is just the tip of the iceberg of what it means as he says to the Sheriff.

memphish said...

Erich, I like what you and your friend are doing. I've put your link in my ridiculously long list of Lost favorites.

I really like your idea of Mr. Patchy being the result of eye for an eye justice. So what was his crime? Amassing shocking amounts of pornography? Another reason for Pickett to take out Sawyer.

My only problem with Smokey being Jacob is that we never saw Smokey with the Tailies and yet the Others took almost all of the Tailies. On the other hand, Smokey has been with the Fusies since Night #1 and the only ones taken were Claire (for the bay-bee) and Walt. Also I take at face value what Goodwin said about the people taken out the first night on the Tailies beach were the strong, not the good.

As the Others are starting to look more and more Old Testament to us, I wonder when/if they will have a Day of Atonement. Way back in the depths of the summer I thought one reason they may have taken Kate (and possible Sawyer and Jack too) was to sacrifice to Smokey like King Kong, Joe vs. The Volcano, whatever. Where is the scapegoat in the Others society? And is there yet a high priest (Levi?) we haven't seen?

memphish said...

Erich, I look forward to keeping up with your ideas. Off the cuff is as good as anything with this show.

As for the tailie/fusie/good/bad/Other thing. This new justice system is why I can't believe there were so many "good" people in the tail section and none in the middle of the plane. Makes you want to rethink your seat preference on the airplane.

Ok, this is the first time I have ever posted about LOST, so don't beat me up too bad if I repeat someone else's theories.

1. I was under the impression that the "HOME" Ben was referring to was Otherville, located on the main island. There is a side view map of Rousseau's map that shows a huge mountain. I think that Otherville is located INSIDE that mountain (in the section labeled something like “le cratere – ‘the creator) [http://www.hanttula.com/projects/lost/images/notebook-rousseaus-map2.jpg] [[http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Image:Mapp.jpg]], thus naturally cloaking itself from people on the ground. As for access, except for maybe Rousseau, I do not think anyone has every walked completely around the island (Sayid tried, but was captured). So maybe there is an inlet that a boat could "drive" up through that has a way into the mountain/volcano (secret door). Look again at the picture of Otherville (http://gallery.lost-media.com/albums/ep-caps/season3/3x01-cities/1/normal_twocitiescap-0090.jpg)when they show the two plumes of smoke from the crashes; they are in an elevated position with mountains on all sides. I have not completely worked out how they get up and down, but it could also explain why Ethan was sent. They needed someone to get down the mountain/volcano extremely fast and he was one of the two best athletes that could transverse the terrain that quickly.

2. Jack actually looked happy at the beginning of the episode. So I believe that it was after his wife split and he turned in his dad. The burdens were gone and he could experience life. When Achura told him what she saw, it brought back all the old feelings of resentment at being "the leader" and that is why he flipped. He demanded the tattoo to make him never forget that he is a leader, no matter how far he tries to run away from that. (Btw, then he got the call about his Dad, and we know the rest...)

3. Maybe this is the New Year's James Bond episode talking, but based on Kvonhard said, I think that the Thai "assaulters" now believe that Achura lost her "gift" because she tatted an outsider.

In "Live and Let Die", Solitaire is a seer, who Mr. Big says can only lose her power if someone sleeps with her. Of course, this is what Bond did, and she lost the ability to predict the future. So now that Achura inked Jack, she is worthless to her brother and her people.

4. I also thought it had to do with Jack, but Cindy was referring to Juliet's trial as the thing they were there to watch. It would serve as an example of what happens to anyone who hurts another person (especially impressionable on the children).

Again, maybe too much Bond here, but if the bad guys could make the inside or mountains and volcanoes, why couldn’t Dharma?

JGZ350 said...

memphish, it's awful slow this friday am. You can always tell when an episode isn't liked, there are not as many comments as usual.

Personally I thought it was a decent episode. It moved the story forward and we are going back to the main island. I wish that Kate would have asked Carl some more pointed questions about the others when they were camping out. Even though nobody has mentioned it, I think smokey was lurking in the background when Jack was in the love cage. The noise I am refering to is the rattling like noise smokey makes when it moves about. That would be interesting if smokey could go from the big island to Alcatraz and back.

Great post Acewebguy. I like the name too.

Othersville being in a mountain/volcano whatever also reminds me of The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne which features an ape named Joop. The mysterious man in that book (I won't use the name to prevent spoiling it for anyone who wants to read the book) lives in a volcano that can only be accessed by water if I remember correctly. Curt who does the Black Rock podcast and posts a lot at theblackrock.org has done a lot with Rousseau's map and he believes that yes, Othersville is in a crater which would make it hard/impossible to see even if you did make it all the way around the shoreline.

It has never seemed like the Others were terribly concerned that our Losties would find Othersville. Of course, Smokey helps to prevent that as does the "line."

I like what you said about the Thai chick losing her gift once she's used it on an outsider. That could well be. This probably will also bring down the family's status as well which is why her brother leads the posse to take out Jack.

As for Bond, I hope there's a tank with sharks and futuristic outfits for them to wear in Othersville a la the first Austin Powers movie. Yeah baby!

Morning all! Re the discussion about being "marked". When Ben stayed Juliette's execution but ordered her marked, I immediately thought of "The Scarlet Letter" with Hester having to wear the letter A for Adultery. Of course, Juliette's mark is hidden on her back, but everyone knows it's there. And it's not a C for Conspiracy or L for Lying. Some have said it's the symbol for Scientology. Juliette seemed resigned to her marking and took it pretty calmly (I guess it's better than being executed). And she and Jack have more in common now.

Yes now that I've read the post we could get webaceguy to offer to fix the icons. :-)
I like your theories about Archara (sp)That's the closed captioning spelling which could be wrong but that's what I use.
Anyway I think she may have lost her standing be using her gift on Jack. I think there were concequences for both Jack and her.

The Prime-Time ratings are out:

LOST was #23 with 12.84

The Tailsection has a post about the demographic breakdown of the ratings and that ABC is happy about that, but LOST is usually in the Top Ten.

CJ said...

Hey, is it just me or...in the picture posted on DarkUFO's website where Jack and the Sheriff are walking through the hallway and there is a man watching them through the glass of a door, doesn't that man look just like the actor that played Kate's Police Officer husband in a flashback (played by the actor Nathan Fillion from 'Firefly')? I think it looks EXACTLY like him, and maybe it is him?...thoughts?

memphish said...

CJ, I assume you're talking about the yellow shirt guy in the Things I Noticed post. Now, I'll admit that my eyes are getting old, so I can't really get a good look at the guy, but I doubt that Nathan Fillion, star of screens both big and small, would be wandering around as an extra in this episode. I'm sure there are some Firefly people around that can give you a definitive answer, but as far as I can tell, no that is not Kevin.

blueheron13 said...

If that is supposed to be there, it's a creepy shot, though.

And by the way, DarkUFO has posted screencaps which definitely show the difference between the two motorboats that the Others have used.

CJ said...

memphish, I am talking about the Things I Noticed post, and aside from the far shot of the guy in the yellow shirt (which I still think might look like that actor), I was mostly referring to the close up shot of the guy in the door glass window when Jack and the Sheriff are in the halway. You have a point about the fact that the actor is big enough where he wouldn't just be standing around in the background, BUT, with the way technology is these days, they could easily take screenshots of that actor during his episode with Kate and paste them into these shots...the question is, why would they go through all that trouble to do that? and the answer is "if Kate's cop husband ends up coming back in a greater capacity in future episodes". This could all be nonsense, but in that hallway picture, that guy looks unbelievably similar to that actor, you have to admit it.

I have to stem my obsession and therefore I am taking a step back from Lost for a while.

I just wanted to say that you guys are amazing, It is a privelage to meet such an intelligent, friendly, lovelely group of people and I feel honoured to have met you all - thank you all.

in regards to the ratings, you cant have your cake and eat it too. You cant attract people to your website and show the whole episode and wonder why ratings are down. Or sell them on i-tunes with no commercials for that matter. If I had to adress abc I would say how about a lead in that is not the last weeks rerun. That just makes less people watch on the first veiwing cause if they miss it they know they can watch two in a row next week. I think running from american idol is a bad idea anyway, lost found it audience when it was against american idol, because that is a totally differnt demographic. People with brains watch lost the rest watch american idol.

Well, there is so much info floating around in my head. I just have a couple of questions nagging me that I haven't seen anybody talk about..but I've just started following the blog faithfully again.
1. Why hasn't anybody said "so your name is alex and you're about 16.....you sure your father is Ben?" (or have they?)
2. (observation) So if the universe "course corrects",no wonder dharma failed...they can't change anything.

shellma said...

Also, I saw somewone say the producers verified that Desmonds "flashback" wasn't a flashback...he really went back in time....is this true?

maven said...

Hey, Shellmaaaaaaa! How are you feeling?

Trying to answer your questions:
1. No one has questioned Alex yet about her age or her father as Ben. No one has put two and two together regarding Rousseau having her baby daughter kidnapped.
2. My head's still spinning from that "flashback" episode of Desmonds. Yep, no matter what they try to do, the universe will compensate and continue on it's predetermined course. So the Valenzetti Equation most likely cannot be manipulated.
3. As much as I personally don't like the time travel bit, yes TPTB did say it was time travel. :(

I read a particularly bad comment/article about this episode (elsewhere, though I don't remember where) that managed to ask a good question.

Why would Achara tattoo Jack with Chinese characters if they're in Phuket? China and Thailand have only had diplomatic ties since the mid-70s. While tattooing an American with Chinese characters would certainly offend some Thai people, why would they be expected to be able to read it to be offended by what it means?

I guess I don't really expect answers, since the tattoos were such a tacked-on element to Jack's character. I just wish a little more thought had gone into them than has been shown so far?

Can you go into more detail?

Unknown said...

thinbluemime - Well, it struck me as odd that the way TPTB would explain Jack's tattoos (given that they're Matthew's in real life) would be to have him get Chinese characters in Thailand.

If Achara wanted to tattoo Jack with a message of warning for her countrymen, wouldn't she do so in her country's language?

I was, however, mistaken about the level of cultural interaction between China and Thailand. While the governments have been cool with each other until relatively recently, the people have interacted for some time. There's a sizeable Chinese minority in Thailand that has almost flawlessly integrated into Thai culture.

The bottom line is that, if this explanation is going to make any sense within the narrative of LOST, then we're going to have to hear some more about the history of these tattoos.

thinbluemime said...

TheBookPolice Thanks for the clarification.

I have been examining maps of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos since "A Stanger" aired.

I loved this episode but then I live Jack anyway. I'd like to hear more about his tatoo. I really liked how that woma Isabel tried to psych him out and intimdate him and it didn't work on him. Like when she tried to tell him that he didn't really know what his tattoos meant. His answer was pretty awesome.

V.A. Jeffrey said...

Sorry, that's "love" Jack.

memphish said...

Totengraber asked, Do we know if Jack fixed Ben's infection before they packed up and left Alcatraz?

TG, that's a good question. Jack told Ben that he'd need more surgery to clean out dead tissue, plus he'll need antibiotics, etc. From what they showed us I'd guess they didn't do it yet, but instead they must have other facilities back at "Home." After all, they only work at The Hydra and we know there was at least one medical facility on Island #1.

Vargas I'm glad you loved the episode. I love Jack too, but that episode really didn't do it for me. I was going to try to re-watch last night, but couldn't motivate myself to do it. I replayed a couple of snappy Sawyer moments, but I wasn't up for shouting Jack.

Passafist, looking forward to the podcast. Hopefully it will give us all something new to say. This episode got talked out pretty quick.

I have a question for everyone. Did Ben know that Juliet's trial was taking place?

It didn't seem so given that he had to write his little note commuting her sentence.

So then hee's the next question. Does this mean the trial is all just a con on Jack to give him someone new to save, a new situation to fix in terms of Juliet which requires him to stay with Others and give Ben enough time to convince Jack he would "want to save him," or was the trial the opening move in a power struggle between Ben and whoever leads the other faction and taking out Juliet weakens Ben's side?

If it's the power play, who is making it? I'd like to suggest Tom who we've begun to write off as the big, almost a little simple guy. After all he knew what was going on. He took Jack to be questioned by the Sheriff. And if Ben didn't know that means Tom didn't tell him. Maybe Tom overheard Ben's Hatch remark that he, Tom was "nobody" and has decided it's time to change that.

Any ideas?

thinbluemime said...

memphish, good question.

I am guessing based on what I know about the series, so no real spoilers here.

Season 3 is roughly half way over. If Lost continues for 5 full seasons, that leaves around 50-60 episodes left in the Lost saga.

Knowing this upfront, and knowing a few things the producers have said in their podcast, there may be many more new characters waiting to be introduced.

I am guessing the powere struggle will be between the OTHERS we have already been introduced to, and the OTHERS we have not seen yet.

It may be that the OTHERS we know, will need a strong tested leader they can trust. Jack should fit the bill, after the questions asked by Alex and Tom, reguarding Jack's motivations to help Ben.

Again, I am guessing, but I liked your question, cause it made me think :)

jgz350, I went back and rewatched the Jack with Tom and Juliet scenes while Jack was in the Love Cage and listened for Smokey. I didn't hear Smokey. I heard lots of jungle noises like a rooster, a monkey type noise, lots of insect clicking, but not the mechanical sound of Smokey. I also noticed during the scene where Juliet is consulting Jack about Ben's stitches that the music is like the Du-Dump from Jaws.

After rewatching those scenes I also really feel like Tom is up to something. After he hands Jack the ungrilled cheese sandwich he takes a step back and very loudly says "Now don't try anything stupid. Stay put in this cage, okay?" like he's performing it for the cameras. And it makes me wonder again why Ben apparently didn't know Juliet's trial was being held when it was. Maybe Tom thinks he has Ben's back while Ben's heals. (Bad pun.) Tom had questioned Jack about Juliet so maybe he's decided that Juliet did ask Jack to kill Ben and he doesn't want Ben covering for her because of their history. Obviously, I'm making this up as I type, but at least it's something other than Bai Ling to think about.

Capcom said...

Re: Jaws music...........ME TOO!!! Haha! :-D

Right, don't make us think about Bai Ling. :-( I just saw The Monkey king again this weekend, and it's a shame that her skeevy off-screen persona ruins the aura of her apparent substantial acting ability for a lot of peeps, including moi. She was horrible in The Crow, but in the Monkey King and that Richard Gere flick about China, she was very good. Oh well. There's no accounting for taste.....especially mine. :o)

Welcome back Jersey boy! (Chucklez) You made it before the snow and sleet is supposed to start, so I hear from my NY area friends.

Good morning loco-

memphish,
What is up? Glad to see back. Have a good trip?
The sound I'm talking about is the noise smokey makes when it is lurking, not the full blown signature smokey sound.

This is from lostpedia:

"The "Monster" makes a variety of different sounds that sound both mechanical and biological. Its mechanical sounds have been described as: whirring, clanking, chattering, ratcheting, roaring, mostly like a black-billed magpie, and noises similar to releasing air pressure or dot matrix printers. Rose remarked that the sounds were familiar to her, a sound that was commented by the directors to be similar to noises heard in Bronx, NY.

In the voiceover commentary for the "The 23rd Psalm" on the Season Two DVD, producer Bryan Burk confirms that the "Monster"'s sound effect is indeed the receipt printer from a NYC taxicab. This sound effect is heard in "Walkabout" right before the first commercial when Locke punches some numbers into a counting machine. The counting machine's printing sound is the same sound the "Monster" makes in "Exodus: Part 1" as it flies by Kate and Jack."

The sound I'm talking about is the one that sounds like the receipt printer from a NYC taxicab. Maybe I'm reaching, but that's the sound I heard during the scenes when Jack was in Kate and Sawyer's love cage.

memphish said...

jgz350, Good morning back. My trip was pretty good. I had low expectations for it, so there was no where to go but up.

As for Smokey, yeah, I knew all that stuff about the receipt ticker. My family and I were in NYC this December and it was all I could do not to duck and cover every time we were in a cab. JK. IMHO the background noises were just jungle noises. You might want to check out The Whispers thread over on the Fuselage. I don't have the exact link but it's not too hard to find. Maybe someone over there thinks they heard Smokey too.

Any word on when we're getting a new thread now that the Podcast is up? It's terribly slow around here.

memphish said...

Okay, you know an episode was not what it should be when there's not even an Official post-hash, pre-hash. I was checking over at ABC.com and there's a little sneaky message that there won't be an official podcast this week. It's on the left side where the Lost and Found picture with Eko's stick is. You can scroll through that. Who knew?

Guess that means Steve and David better have come through for us. I'm sure they did. I'll be listening later today.

The first few minutes of the podcast are pretty controversial and I really put off talking about it, but I got tired of critism that we were trying to convert people. I'd skip the first 4 minutes or so if you don't car about my own pride. As for the rest of the podcast, I'm dying to see what others think of my wild theory about Achura and how she came to have he powers. Please let me know what you think about the show overall. WORD UP!!

JGZ350 said...

Yeah memphish, it is a bit slow around here. No official Lost podcast either? Imagine that. I know SIASL was not what the first two episodes of the second pod of season three where, but you figured Damon and Carlton would have at least done an official Lost podcast. Oh well, we still have our TLC podcast to listen to, which I will be doing later today also.

Oh memphish, wow on you knowing that stuff about the receipt ticker already. That was news to me today, you are quite the Lostie.

memphish said...

jgz350, I'm too much the Lostie probably. I have my son quiz me by picking random items and me having to tell him how they tie into LOST. For example, he says giraffe, and I'm like Hurley said maybe the monster is a p&*(ed-off giraffe in Numbers, and the Dharmalars speculated that Kate's cage held giraffes. Next.

Don't let those guys mess with you. I have said since the beggining of the Experience that I am a non-believer and that I usually hate it when people try to push their religion on me. However, I have never felt that way here. If nothing else it has been the opposite both here and in the podcast. Yes their is a lot of religion brought up in the podcast, but that is bound to happen with there being so much religious references in the show... I mean we are watching the same show as the nit-wits who gave the bad review... right? I hope so or they really didn't deserve to give you a bad rating. Or does that mean they did, becase they thaught they were listening to something else entirely, which makes it seem like you guys are into a whole other area of what they don't understand... nevermind, I am confusing myself now. Needless to say I think you guys do a great job and never have you tried to convert me or anyone else.

Can I get an Amen... lol

memphish said...

Podcast feedback time.

First, David, thanks for the info. re iTunes. Good to know.

Steve and I were on the same wavelength when it comes to this episode. Why do the Others act like the Losties should take them at their word when their actions are so contrary? Is this just a blind spot we all have about ourselves?

I also agree the episode should have been called "Creepy and Cheesey," and I am not getting Jack-et chemistry vibes either. Other than Stockholm Syndrome or Juliet's need of spinal surgery, why would relationship-impaired Jack all of a sudden get the warm fuzzies for his interrogator?

Vis a vis the Jack as Moses thing: my question is which group is Jack really from? Is he a true Lostie, now being "raised" by the Others, who'll revert to being the leader of the Losties, or is he really an Other who as a baby was raised by the world and who is returning to his true people the Others? I think that would turn out to be a more interesting scenario and maybe we'd finally find out what happened to Christian Shephard's body. Now that's a mystery I want solved. Oh, and the Red Sea thing was a hoot. Maybe that's the only true way off the island?

Engineer27 that was a good call.

Oh, David, please don't sing, and Coke is way better than Pepsi.

Finally as for your wacky theory, I went back to look at an episode transcript and don't see what you're talking about that Achara said something happened in her village. I think we're supposed to think that Achara has "powers," but I'm more inclined to think she's like Richard Malkin, Claire's psychic, and she's just reading people and then marking them however she wants because hey, who can read that stuff after all. It didn't take us a month to figure out those things she said about Jack--leader, angry, etc, and as far as I know none of us was sleeping with him.

And Amen Ded.
