Happy Monday everybody. Enjoy the podcast!

yeah also we were recording in a space right above a band practicing so if you turn the speakers loud and you hear a lot of reverberating bass, that's what it is. Unfortunetly we couldn't edit that out of the mix. But is was also the first time I've really strechted the phone capabilities. WORD UP!!!

Check out the trailer for the upcoming movie THE NUMBER 23. Lots of fun for LOST fans who wonder about references to any of the numbers.

Anonymous said...

Downloading it now. Is the LADY anything to do with the man from UNCLE?

That film looks like a Hurley-centric episode... except with Jim Carrey. Anyway, 23 = 2+3 = 5, HAIL ERIS. Fnord.

Chris Procter said...

Hi Guys,

Yes, The Number 23 certainly looks lostesqe.

Looking forward to the Podcast, I'll be listening when I get home tonight.

Good morning!

Can't wait to hear the latest installment. Also - the official Lost podcast is out and is a Video Podcast. I haven't watched it yet, but I have heard that it is spoiler rich with a scene from the upcoming episode - so beware.

maven said...

Hey, everyone! Morning!

Listened to TLC Podcast, ABC Podcast and Video (busy morning).

Love how David, Steve, and all interact like one big family (I guess they are kinda)! Everyone is willing to throw out their interesting theories. Very entertaining.

ABC stuff is sorta spoilerish -- so don't watch it/listen if you don't like spoilers!

Hi LoCo...I posted this towards the end of the last thread so I brought it over in case anyone had some thoughts...

I loved the To Kill a Mockingbird reference. That is one of the greatest books ever. I think that Juliet purposely put that theme in Jack's head before she started the whole "let's kill Ben" video. My questions are: Does she want Jack to see himself as Atticus Finch (arguably one of the most honorable characters in literature)? And the follow up question: Will Jack see Ben as the rabid dog (which Atticus killed for the greater good) or as Tom (the wrongly accused man that Atticus tried to save)? What do you guys think?

And while this has no bearing whatsoever on Lost, Tom from To Kill a Mockingbird had a bad arm, IIRC.

Welcome back fysb! I'm trying to talk to the wife and figure out a way to get to a watch party on wednesday with you guys. Email me if there are definite plans.

Nice to see you, FYSB!

DA: Great comment about why Ben has a tumor while others have been healed! I'm still intensely curious about the Others relationship with Smokey.

Had a crazy idea. We still haven't watched last week's episode! Blame the family album blog I'm trying to set up. Anyway, maybe we'll just record this week's and then dole them out so the hiatus feels less like purgatory...unless it's *meant* to....dum dum dum ;-)

Good Afternoon All!

blueheron13 said...

Hello, everyone!

I see it's time to listen to the podcasts.

One thought for the moment: Where is Juliet getting meat for the cheesburgers and other meals? Do the Others have meat come in supply drops, do you think? Could they raise farm animals? Not too important, I suppose, but that's what's running through my head.

You read my post (or was it WrecksHead's?) out on the podcast about Jack and the operation he's being asked to do. Nancy disagreed that he would never sabotage it, because Ben and his lackeys have been such a bane to the losties.

I agree with the gist of her issue. There'd be a temptation to sabotage the op for revenge, or to improve the situation on the island. That's the point - it's the test. We'll have to wait and see. What if he comes through, resolves to complete the operation, and then a complication arises and the operation is a failure. How galling would it be for them to believe he fluffed the op, and whatever comes of them believing that, when in fact he honestly wanted to succeed. If it earns him his trip off the island? If it earns him an indefinite stay?

On another note, would anybody be interested in a little competition during the 3 month break?

ib4uc said...

Good afternoon all. A thought about Ben/Juliet and the tumor.

At first, I thought Juliet was for real and really wanted Jack to botch the spinal surgery and kill Ben. Then I started thinking just the opposite, that the two were in cahoots -- just another experiment on Jack.

But, if it is the latter, what does Ben have to gain from it? Because, if Jack follows through and succeeds in "botching" the surgery, Ben will die.

Why would he agree to it unless he has no idea what Juliet is up to? Juliet gets her way in either situation.

I'm starting to dislike her more and more...

blueheron13 said...

redhex,

What kind of competition?

Unless he can't be killed.... muuu haa haaa haa haaa! Maybe Jack will have to chop his head off.

Hi all, and welcome back FYSB, and Hansolow. Now if we can only get Fenris to return once in a while!

I loved the Chinatown reference as well, FSYB! Lost is getting almost as good as the Simpsons in the genre of culture-referencing TV dialogue. The Sawyerisms are too good, I look forward to them every week.

DA, by dark, do you mean like goth/beatnik type dark? I'm into that. Which reminds me of the South Park episode where we were first introduced to the Goth kids. Bwaahahaaaahahahahhahahaaaaa! Perfect. My former artist-persona self! :-D

Capcom said...

blueheron13 said...

Folks, don't waste your time on the ABC video podcast, unless you really, really want to see the spoiler scene at the end.

Damon and Carlton show these ridiculous "videos" that are supposed to illustrate their own real-life LOST-type "connection" from the past. Juvenile, boring stuff IMHO.

And Maven was right, the audio podcast was pretty spoilery. Very little in the way of past episode clarificaiton. Mostly vague clues about future episodes. If you don't like spoilers, don't go there.

Lostpedia has a good article on the Hydra island, in case anyone is interested in some light reading while waiting for Lostday:

Capcom said...

FYSB, I'm up in the air about Benry right now, but his health problems are appealing to the sucker in me and I'm feeling some sympathy.....a little.....just a smidge.....only a tad. But I find his never-ending insensitivity to the Lostaways plight since their crash, very appalling.

Yes, that whole sister/daughter thing was a great and surprising moment in the film. Ew. BTW, did you like "LA Confidential"? I thought that is was a great twisty detective story about Hollyweird. Although I only saw the edited-for-TV version so far.

Cam, are you a "Miss"? :-)

FYSB said...

LOVED LA Confidential. I love noir. A new classic in the "twist" genre is The Usual Suspects. I still get a kick out of that one.

I think Jack will not harm Benry intentionally. What happens if Juliet guides it, who knows. I understand your conflict with Benry...taken from his perspective, he's simply a mild mannered island dwelling intellectual. Who, from the Losties perspective, happens to lead a megalomaniacal bunch of militants who think it's ok to beat/torture/kill because they are the good guys. I still get peeved when Danny(?) goes down to beat Sawyer after Colleen's death...he's so self righteous as if the Others are so completely innocent and underserving of any attack.

And I believe Cam is a 14/15 year old young man.

Thoughts From The Beach

I’m Lost on this Island, my plane crashed you see
I was on Oceanic 815, seat 23
I don’t mind the mangos; the sea view is nice,
And Rose does my washing for a reasonable price.
I play Golf with Hurley , backgammon with Locke
I played cards with Sawyer, I lost, not a shock.

I don’t mind the Polars, they keep to their own
And so what if the monster gives an occasional groan
The food drop was awesome, Apollo candy for all
So the ranch dressings missing, you can’t have it all.
Aaron’s a real cutie and Claire’s quite nice too,
And I did like the hatch with a real flushing loo.

We had our own doctor, dentist and priest
It’s a shame the psychiatrist and cop are deceased
The Others seem friendly, if you’re not Steve or Scott
And we have our own psychic I nearly forgot
We’ve got Kate, who’s a killer, but nice as can be,
Charlie a Junkie but now he’s drug free.

I hear there’s a French lady mad as a goose
She captured Sayid, but then set him loose
Jin does the fishing, Sun grows the food
Jack runs the show, when he’s not in a mood
Vincent is cuddly, just like the bears.
And I live on the beach with out any cares

I like my small island, the sun and the sand,
It’s quite fun surviving with my little band
So a plane fell on Boone, Shannon got shot,
Michael Escaped, Eko did not
Artz got exploded all over Hurley
But hey, I can sleep in, I don’t get up early.

There’s adventure and intrigue, mystery galore,
With Dharma and Hanso, the Others and more
The Back Rock, transmitter, the drug plane as well
The hatches, the numbers, Dr Marvin Candle
And let’s not forget that guy with that patch
Are Dharma still working from the Flame Hatch?

It almost a perfect existence, this life
No worries no work, no pestering wife
I’d almost say paradise lost has been found
The moment the plane impacted the ground
There’s only one thing that getting me down
It’s Nikki and Paulo
I do wish they’d Drown

FYSB said...

Bloody brilliant Dark Angel! What a delightful way to start the day.

Something occurred to me this morning as I stood in line to vote. I suppose I should have been pondering the candidates or the issues, but instead I realized that OtherTown (of the muffins and book clubs) is on Lostie Island (Benry sent Goodwin and Ethan to run to the crash of Flight 815). But now the Others seem to be living on Hydra Island, which according to Benry is a sep place. (and is backed up by the statement "the sub is back").

Did I miss something? Or did the Others flee to the island suburbs when the lower class Losties moved in? Or is it something more sinister?

mwah hah hah

Don't forget to vote, Americans!

Melissa_Lossa said...

fysb - I had assumed that the Others lived in Othertown and "worked" at the Hydra (via that nasty submarine commute). However, someone speculated in another thread that the work that Kate and Sawyer were doing was laying the groundwork for new houses on Hydra island. Perhaps the incident involving the hatch explosion made them want to move?

CattyGirl said...

Dark Angel - that was great. I need to pass that on to my fellow Lost fans at work.

Anonymous said...

I think the Others are merely operating from the Hydra while they've got a project on. Ie. either dealing with Jack, Kate and Sawyer or just the losties in general. Using the facility and the remoteness from being discovered. You wouldn't want to live there long, it looks boring and uncomfortable.

FYSB said...

Interesting thoughts melissa_lossa and redhex. Thanks for bringing me up to speed.

Though only what we've seen looks boring and uncomfortable. Benry had a fabulous beach brunch set up for Kate when they first brought her there. They must have a decent kitchen facility at least. Or maybe the Hydra schools are a lot better than Pearl schools and they wanted to be in a good district once Juliet's fertilizing kicked in.

Melissa_Lossa said...

oh come on, redhex - you get some cushions for your polar bear bed, hang some Chinese lanterns from the bars, maybe install some cable TV - you have the kind of accomodations that adventurous millionaires pay big money for!

Melissa_Lossa said...

Maybe Hydra's just closer to downtown and all the good restaurants. "Come on, Ben, we have to move - there's just no good shopping on this island. Hydra's got the GAP!"

FYSB said...

"Benry, ever since those losties moved in, the neighborhood has gone downhill. All that laundry hanging right out in front of their huts, it's just not right. And the CRIME! Now, I'm not one to point fingers, but we had precious few murders or kidnappings or tortures or assaults with deadly weapons until they moved in. And I'm pretty sure they do not have the proper building permits for that church they're building.

Now, that new Hydra development, it's a lovely gated (and caged!) community, plenty of security AND free cable."

Moving my post over from the dead thread:
Hello! I'm finally caught up. I just want to put in my vote for the theory that Ben's tumor is a scam along with Juliet's enlistment of Jack to overthrow the Bendom. It's a long con. Let's see if I'm wrong again!

Love the haiku and poem! Dark Angel, are you a horror writer? I have some of my work, horror and mystery, on my website.

Aradia said...

Hey all!

Don't suppose you still have a unit avilable with an oceanside view do you Mel?

Melissa_Lossa said...

Oh, isibell, for you, of course!

I hope you don't mind that it overlooks the submarine dock. It can be a little noisy, but it has great atmosphere. And the sirens only go off once in awhile.

barbarajay - I tend to agree. Ben's comment to Juliett about his x-rays makes me think that HE at least believes the tumor story. I see a couple of possibilities:

1) Ben does have a tumor, he wants Jack to save him and Juliett wants Jack to kill him

2) Ben does have a tumor, he wants Jack to save him and so does Juliet - they're using reverse psychology to talk Jack into it

3) Ben does not have a tumor, but believes he does; Juliett planned to kill him and blame it on the "cancer," but Jack coming along ruined that

4) Ben does not have a tumor and this is some elaborate scheme he and Juliett have cooked up, for reasons unknown

Personally, I believe #4 is pretty unlikely, but the others are all possibilities. I'm kind of intrigued by the idea of #3.

FYSB, glad you're back. I lurked TLEC all summer, so it was weird not seeing your name in the comments.

Twinkle, thanks for the joke blog. Your husband's is my favorite.

Dark Angel, nice poem. There is not enough caffeine in this world to enable me to write such art. You have a gift.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I kind of think that tomorrow's finale will have Jack doing the surgery - perhaps he'll cut Ben open only to find that there is no tumor - cut to Juliett with the stun gun, ordering Jack to let him die.

Although, if that was the case, why would she go through the whole secret video thing to convince Jack to let him die - unless she's banking on him just letting him die without checking things out too much.

Okay, I may have just talked myself out of my own theory. :)

April and Eli said...

I think they might try to piss Jack off to the point that he would kill, and they could do it too.

What if they convince him that Sawyer's dead and Kate is being tortured or something? If Juliet says the only way they will stop torturing her is if he kills Ben?

Of course, that would all have to be said on poster boards in a video unless Ben takes a sick day.

FYSB said...

I don't know if Jack would kill out of anger (though he's being pushed pretty far), but he might kill if it were the "right" thing to do. Remember how Juliet told him the movie would be To Kill A Mockingbird...maybe she will position Benry as the rabid dog that only Jackitus has the skill to put down.

Melissa_Lossa, I LOVE the idea that Juliet has convinced Benry that he has a tumor and he doesn't. I can see her in surgery now....just as Jack cuts open Benry's spine Juliet distracts everyone....

"Look, it's the Smoke Monster and it's getting into the ranch dressing again!"

and when they turn away, she tosses a sea urchin into the incision.

"Oh, my bad, it was just Pickett. Oh look, here's that tumor. Happy Ending"

Then they all go out for sushi.

ib4uc said...

I also like the idea that Juliet has convinced Ben that he has a tumor, but that brings up another question -- whose x-rays are they really? Could they be Ben's and rigged to look as though there is a tumor? I would think it would be difficult to "manufacture" a tumor on an x-ray if there wasn't one.

Capcom said...

Hi all! Nice to see so many people hanging out and typing on Lost-eve.

Great island saga, DA. Make a morbid one now! :-D You know we have the material for it, the show's given us tons of morbidity!

I kind of have a gut feeling in favor of the long con theory also concerning Ben/Jack/Juliet/tumor. I'm sure I'm wrong, but that's where my spidey senses are sitting for now. I want to believe that Ben is finally "done with lying" by now, like he said in the Swan (and still lied again), but I just can't trust him yet.

Good luck on the upcoming nuptials Thrasher! Make sure in addition to your bride's something blue, etc., that you wear something Lostie for us, so we can be there with you in spirit! Maybe put a little palm leaf in your corsage, some sand in your shoe, wear a pair of Dharma logo boxers, or wear a fake beard! Or you could say, "I Thrasher, take you Freckles...." :-)

I'm still waiting for the Simpsons creaters to give Lost a shout out, have they done anything yet? Come on Simpsons people, throw us a bone, like maybe Homer saying "Mmmhmmmhmm, grghrghrgh, Fish Bisquits! Mmmmmmmm".

Great comments everyone. :-)

fysb - Okay, I just had this very gross image of tumor urchin sushi. BLEH!

Can you imagine if you were Juliet, you spent who knows how long either doctoring Ben's routine x-rays to make it look like he has a giant tumor (and I think it could be done - if Ben's not a doctor, how would he know what an x-rayed tumor looked like?) or finding an appropriate set to switch out with his, you prepare this whole "oh, sorry, Ben, you have an inoperable tumor" story, you begin slowly poisoning him so that you can kill him off without arousing suspicion and take over the Others... and then a plane crashes. Ethan runs to the wreckage and comes back with the amazing news - there's a spinal surgeon among the survivors!

Fish biscuits! Your plan is ruined!

Pwyll said... Also, Jack won't kill Ben. His job is to save lives, and he's so sad when a patient dies =/

He didn't seem too sad when Colleen died. IMO, he seemed to give up rather quickly.

ib4uc said...I also like the idea that Juliet has convinced Ben that he has a tumor, but that brings up another question -- whose x-rays are they really?

The problem I have with this theory is the conversation Jack had with Ben about the tumor. It sounds like Ben does have the symptoms Jack mentions, and was shocked and scared that Jack knew, which means the tumor must be real.

Jack: Does it hurt?
Ben: Sorry?
Jack: Your neck, does it hurt?
Jack: Any numbness in your fingers and toes? Like pins and needles when your foot falls asleep, but permanent.
Ben: Why are you asking me these questions, Jack?
Jack: Because Ben, You have a tumor, on your spine, an agressive tumor, that is going to kill you.
Jack: I don't know when those x-rays were taken that I saw, but unless they were very recent, you're not going to be taking walks much longer.
Ben: I have no idea what you are talking about.
Jack: Ok. My mistake then. I'm ready whenever you are.

Oh, and that blasted 3-month break -- I'd rather see reruns than no Lost at all. Probably the consensus of a lot of the LoCo's here.

Melissa_Lossa said...

not neccessarily, dennis - if Juliette was trying to kill Ben off, using the fake tumor as an excuse, she could be slipping him some sort of drug that would produce those symptoms.

I'm not saying it's not an out-there theory, but it could work. :)

Also on msnbc - they have some bizarre gas gauge looking graphics to measure the balance in the House and Senate and a running ticker to report that there are no results in yet. When did elections turn into something out of Fear Factor?

And yes, I know that there are many, many answers to THAT question.

FYSB said...

That is the craziest election graphic I have ever seen. Your Fear Factor comment is right on (on multiple levels).

Maybe we can use that balance of power tool for Losties vs. Others. For the morons who can't figure out that 44 is less than 55 without someone holding up a picture.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Ooh, I like it! We could have that little graphic in the corner of the screen, and any time either side has a death (or a birth!) the balance shifts. It'll only be effective, though, if we can get an annoying sound effect to go with it.....

Love all the tumor talk. That storyline can go so many ways...is it real or is it not...does he know or doesn't he...did she plan this and then a surgeon plopped out of the sky...WOW, I've got a headache thinking of all the possibilities!

I'm tending to go with the tumor is real. Juliet is letting Ben think she's trying to work on Jack to get him to want to operate and save him. But we know she has alternate plans. She wants Ben to die thinking she tried to save him (and so will his followers). If she can do that, the coup will be peaceful, and Ben's followers won't rebel against her.

I continue to continue doing the audio for as long as the podcast continues and as long as you want me to continue, I just love being part of this great community and being able to contribute to the best podcast on the net!

Capcom Yes I like the idea of doing some dark lost based poetry. I've started mulling over some ideas on something themed around Eko and Old Smokey.

BarbaraJay said Dark Angel, are you a horror writer? I have some of my work, horror and mystery, on my website.

No, I guess I am more Sci-Fi, fantasy based although I hate trying to squeeze any form of art into genres. Strangely enough the only things I have ever had publisehed have all been factual. I trashed my first novel after 120,000 words or so and I am slowly working on a novel at present. I have a few chapters down but no idea where the plots going, I'm somewhat better at content than plot. I had a quick look at your site Babarajay but I'll give it a proper look when I get home tonight.

Wel, It's the final tonight of our little mini-Series, will we find out the truth behind Juliet and Ben I doubt it). Will Sawyer get one over on Picket... I hope so. What about the polar bear, is it recovering from its burnt nose? Will we get answers, I doubt it, will it be a great episode, sure hope so....

Chris Procter said...

Hey Scoutpost,

Cool new Avatar, my Godmother worked for John Wayne sorting out his movie contracts, she always tells me how nice he was!

Berimon said...

So, this is really late in the week for this, but I'm gonna write it up anyways.

Re: Smokey taking the bodies of Yemi and Christian. If he would take some of the bodies, in a kind of "keep the island clean" programming, why didn't he take Adam & Eve (found by Jack and Kate in the caves)? I don't think he had anything to do with it at all, in fact, I think you guys are mistaking coincidence for plot, to mangle a quote.

Next: Jack's sense of Honor. Ok, look, Jack turned in his own DAD to the authorities for being a bad doctor, there's absolutely no way he'd botch an operation on purpose. It would, however, be entirely plausible that he'd refuse to do the operation entirely. Especially considering how Ben and Co. have treated the Losties this whole time. I would like to point out that Juliet has put Jack in a lose/lose situation.

Situation 1: She wants Ben dead. He does the surgery, and succeeds, Juliet now has to kill Jack or risk his betrayal to Ben. He does the surgery and it fails, now she has blackmail info on him. He refuses the surgery, and Ben's loyalists are royally pissed at him, likely resulting in Pickett lynching him (if Sawyer doesn't kill Pickett first).

Situation 2: Juliet is testing Jack, probably with Ben's approval. He does the surgery and succeeds, but now cannot trust Juliet/Ben for a variety of reasons. He does the surgery and fails, Juliet can/will now assume that Jack did it on purpose and has him killed. He refuses to do the surgery, and since (in this scenario) they are evil and he's outlived his usefulness, they feed him to the polar bears. Or Smokey.

I guess that's a lose/lose/lose/lose/lose/lose situation. Poor Jack.

Third: Desmond's Powers. Given how Desmond seemed not to realize that Locke's speech had not happened yet, I don't think that he is a Precognitive. More along the lines of a time loop, or simply reliving a short span of time, short meaning a few days. He'd remember that Claire and Turniphead got nuked by lightning, and the speech would stick in his mind. But a lot of the other little details would get lost in the shuffle. Now he's just biding his time until whatever (happened/will happen/has happened) passes. Presumably to stop it from (whatever) again.

Now onto the meat of my theories. Remember that the Dharma Initiative was founded by very well funded corporation. The likelyhood of them simply setting up one or two experiments is very, very small. A more likely scenario is that they were doing research on any number of possible ways to change the Numbers in the Valenzetti Equation. This includes, but is not limited to, ESP/Psychic abilities, Nanotechnology, Longevity, Non-Supernatural Psychology, Fertility, and a host of potential others. When the DI collapsed in the mid-80s, everything was just abandoned, the things that could be safely shut down, were. The rest was just left there. And this includes the residents of the Island. And the original Hatch, where they couldn't shut it down, and weren't sure what would happen if they just left it alone, so they installed a fail-safe explosive, and let them keep pushing the button.

I believe that the entire Island was quarantined by DI, and that's why the Others have no intention of leaving the island. They still have Data access to the outside world, and probably still have food airdropped onto the island, but no-one leaves. Now, I know folks will point out that Walt and Michael got to leave, but I think that Walt's burgeoning mental abilities would provide the justification to let them off. I have almost no doubt that the co-ordinates they gave Michael led him to a waiting Hanso Foundation boat (or another Island, Pacific islands tend to be volcanic to the best of my knowledge, and are seldom singles) and are even now under the watchful Eyes of Hanso. The final piece of evidence is that since they have data access to the outside world, they could have had a boat come to pickup the Losties immediately after the crash, and thus not ever been exposed to the Others. There has to be a reason why they didn't do this, other than it would have made for a very short series.

Now, I also think that Smokey is just one of the Experiments on the Island. Maybe one that got loose, or it really was the security system Rousseau said it was. But its original function is long gone, and is now operating under no supervision, following the last instruction given to it, whatever they were. Possibly it was intended as a Judge of humanity, in order to eliminate those that fueled the Valenzetti Equation.

In the end, all the different weirdnesses (if that's a word) are just going to be otherwise unrelated parts of the original Dharma project. Just different researches gone bad.

As a last note, I'm wondering where all the hate is coming from for the new Losties, Nikki and Paulo. Before Eko, they had killed off at least four survivors, how small does the cast have to get before we can find out about the other 30-odd survivors? I also want to note that USA Today ran an article last week about what a Big Deal Rodrigo Santoro is in his Native Brazil. Apparently he's Tom Cruise big there, much like Yunjin Kim is in Korea. So I doubt he's going anywhere anytime soon. So you might as well get used to it. I could be wrong, but I doubt he'll end up as a throwaway character/Redshirt.

Ok, I'm done, I'll shut up now, see if anyone reads this before the new thread goes up. :)

Later..........

Nice theories! They dovetail nicely with what I'm thinking too.

They still have Data access to the outside world, and probably still have food airdropped onto the island, but no-one leaves.

Right so if the island was quarantined and only the Swan Hatch was manned because of the electro-magnetic thing. But the Others have contact with support people who drop them food. Then maybe the Others were the ones responsible for arranging the food drop to the Losties?

If smokey is a Judge of humanity, do you mean smokey is in charge of eliminating 30% of the population like Mittlewerk was doing? I like your idea that "Smokey is just one of the Experiments on the Island. Maybe one that got loose, or it really was the security system Rousseau said it was. But its original function is long gone, and is now operating under no supervision, following the last instruction given to it". 2. Sunday Night Football 21.94
3. Grey's Anatomy 2l.02
5. Dancing With the Stars 20.51
6. Dancing With the Stars-Results 19.22
7. Criminal Minds 16.97
8. Deal or No deal (Mon) 16.90
9. CSI: NY 16.64
10. LOST 16.07

Still in the top ten, but "Criminal Minds" beat us this week! :( We all know Lost fans like us will be back in 13 weeks, but that's a really long time in TV-time for the average fan.

Berimom: Great ideas! And welcome here to TLC!

I kinda agree with you re Nikki and Paolo. Yeah, we've had a field day making fun of them so far. Not much of substance has been given us for their characters. But we have to remember that a lot of other stuff has been going on plot-wise, and they probably just haven't gotten around to them yet. We have always wondered about the background survivors, and now, when we begin to see them and they get some dialog and actually interact with the regulars, we belittle them. We know LOST develops at it's own pace...we have to give it some time. Berimom said: I also want to note that USA Today ran an article last week about what a Big Deal Rodrigo Santoro is in his Native Brazil. Hi Guys,

I don't think Lost is at any risk of being terminated. I read somewhere that globally Lost is the most watched TV show, that's big money for ABC. Here in the UK Sky allegedly paid £20,000,000 (just over $38,000,000) for Lost Season 3!

But on to more important matters, grab your water bottles and Jesus stcks 'cause it's time to go and rescue poor Charlotte, Eko's one think but Charlotte!, now old Smokey's really overstepped the mark.. ;)

Chris Procter said...

The problem with Hype is it is very differnt to live up to. Best episode of Lost for me was the Pilot because that was what drew me in, it was what turned me from "I wonder what this Lost thing is like" into a Lost obsessive :)

maven said...

jgz350: Hi, there! Yeah, I do think that they will live up to the hype! (I sneaked a peak at a scene from tonight...naughty me!) ABC does well with LOST. Being in the top ten week after week is no small feat in the rating's war (although the "Criminal Minds" being #7 worries me). They have a lot invested in it, and as Dark Angel says, it is a worldwide investment. I know tonight's show will definitely keep people like us interested and coming back, and hopefully, there's enough of us. I know a few of my friends who are very casual viewers are getting a little disillusioned about the show and think it's getting "dumb". But that's just a handful of people. How about anyone else's friends who just watch the show for entertainment and don't dissect every little thing?

Black Swan said...

I don't think Lost would get the ax, but I think they're worried. The most recent ABC audio podcast sounded to me like Carlton and Damon were a little defensive. Tonights episode will no doubt leave us with a huge cliff-hanger! I, for one, would stay interested enough to last the hiatus if TLE started up again. Watch for interesting commercials tonight!

Twinkle said "Then maybe the Others were the ones responsible for arranging the food drop to the Losties?"

I kinda doubt it actually, I don't think the Others are in charge of anything off of the island. The Hanso foundation is probably funding them, either independently or through a contractor. Though the contractor is doubtful with all the secrecy. The Losties drop was intended for the Hatch the Losties were in, that's why there was a Environment Suit (the big yellow one Kelvin used). To go get the food drops. Remember, they said there was about three months of food for one person when they started divvying up the Hatch food. I'm assuming they put some leeway into the schedule.

Also remember, if Smokey is Nano-Tech, they don't have to make tens of thousands, one can replicate himself as many times as his programing demands. Essentially, it could strip the earth by himself..... but I go to far into speculative Sci-Fi. I really hope that he isn't nanites, the minute they use those is when all the casual fans go away.

Codysmom said "Do you think the fact that the Swan station is destroyed that Smokey is now even more powerful and active?"

My theory that all the stations are unrelated would indicate that the explosion would have little to no direct effect on Smokey. Only the damage to Smokey's station (the Flame?) would have any effect on him, and I doubt they would build it close enough to do that. They have, so far, been pretty spread out.

And maybe not 30%, maybe just select world leaders/cultural icons/religious leaders/pop stars/the cast of Criminal Minds. The ultimate assassin, as it were.

I believe the downturn in viewership is directly related to the increase in Sci-Fi subject matter. That sort of thing has never had widespread viewership. Also, it might be a result of the unexpected deaths at the end of last season. They spent all season trying to make Ana-Lucia a sympathetic character, with mixed results, and then abruptly killed her off. That can leave a bad taste in your mouth, if you had invested time into learning and caring about that character. I could go on with what I think they are doing wrong, as concerns the writing on the show, but I'm not going to. Want to maintain a positive attitude. :)

Last thing, the midseason finale does have a lot of hype to live up to, but unless it really is just unbearably bad I think we'll see the series run it's planned course. Sorry if this is a spoiler, but the Abrams and Co have said that this won't be a permanent series, they have the finish planned already.

Later...........

P.S. I think at the end of this season, Bobby Ewing will wake up in the shower, realize this whole season was a hallucination brought on by the hatch explosion, and then he'll go out to breakfast with Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. :)

I'm not worried about LOST being cancelled, but I know that a lot of people, including my local group are getting discouraged. As for me, I'm not really down on the show yet. I love it and have faith in the story, and am just enjoying the ride. I have a feeling that the second part of this season will really be good- like the first 6 epis are just setting up the rest. Guess we'll see. Even though it may drag at times, it's still the best show to happen to TV in a long time.

As for tonight, I can't wait. There is a lot of hype- hopefully it will live up to it. Last week's epi lived up to season 1 status, so hopefully tonight's will too. Super point! So Hanso has been dropping stuff to the Others and the Swan Hatch. I keep forgetting it's only been a couple months since Kelvin died and Desmond abandoned his post. Of course they wouldn't have gotten any word about stopping the shipments for them, especially since the Losties were still pushing the button. I wonder what those who maintain or keep track of DI in the outside world think now that the button isn't being pushed. They'd keep track of that, right?

I think TPTB have made it clear from the beginning that Lost was a show with a beginning and an end, like how JMS did Babylon 5. I really appreciate a show that's written that way and feel more purpose in watching its developments rather than a show where everything is completely made up as you go along.

A thought: What if that wasn't Ben's x-ray? Hmmm.

This is purely speculation, not spoilers:

I've been thinking that, too. I think the x-ray belonged to Juliet's husband who died right before 815 crashed. This would explain much of her behavior in S1E1 and after:

-Before the book club; she seems to have to pull herself together and feels better after hearing "Downtown" (was this their song?)

-She's clumsy and rattled (burning her hand on muffins) getting ready for the book club. Could it be the first time she's had people over socially since her husband's death?

-Ethan is working on her plumbing. She and the older woman joke about it never getting done (because Ethan is hanging around to court Juliet or because Juliet's husband would have had it done in no time?)

-During the book club meeting, she acts as if she resents the comments about her choice of book (did her husband always chose the book before?)

-Juliet says something to the effect that she thought free will still existed on the island. Maybe Juliet's husband wanted the others to operate on him even though conditions weren't the best to do it (ex. no paddles), since he knew he'd die anyway. He dies on the operating table with Ben as surgeon. Juliet knows her husband would have died soon anyway, but is still mad at Ben since:
1. at least she would have had more time with hubby
2. thought Ben could have talked him out of it
3. Or maybe she really thinks Ben screwed up the op and caused his death.

-When they leave their houses after the "earthquake" Ben says to Juliet, "I guess I'm out of the book club, then." Obviously, the tension is still there.

-explains the odd, tense moment between Colleen, Juliet, and Ben (am I interupting something?)

-explains the statement by Juliet at Colleen's funeral -"I hate funerals"

I'm probably wrong, the same way I was wrong about what Ben wanted to show Sawyer when they took their hike up the mountain. I thought he'd show him an airplane graveyard (I still think that would have been cool).

isibell... thanks for the info. I guess I should break down and read HP from the beginning.

Codysmom . . .
Interesting ideas. I hope whatever it is it is some sort of twist. I was disappointed last week because it seemed too easy to me that the tumor was Ben's and that Eko died. I'm trying to keep relatively spoiler, theory and speculation free for tonight so that I can just enjoy the ride.

Happy LOST watching everyone!

ib4uc, isibell: Yeah, Mad-Eye was in book 4, right? Good stuff!

Aradia said...

ib4uc - Oh honey...absolutly yes!!!! The first three books don't take very long to read, they are age approprate for the reading level of 12 and 13 year olds. But without the first books the last books arn't nearly as cool, and the universe not nearly as rich. They are such amazing books...there is so a part of me that wishes they were real.

Wow! Spoilerfix.com has come breathtaking spoilers today!

twinkle - He starts in book 4, gobblet of fire. But I beleave he's also in 5 & 6. I absolutly love his character...to funny.

I think ABC is doing better in all-important 18-49 demographic.

scoutpost said... Has anyone heard any more news about the mobisodes or any more ARG rumors to take place during the hiatus?

All the press releases I can find about the Mobisodes are from the summer. Here is somthing from USA today about "The Lost Diaries":

In a preview shown to more than 4,000 Lost fans Saturday at Comic-Con, Hurley (Jorge Garcia) finds a video camera, which he uses to record events on the island. Plans are for 13 two-minute mobisodes on Verizon this fall, but the early going has been slow. "It has been hard to get it off the ground, because we don't want them to be ... lame," executive producer Damon Lindelof told a filled ballroom.

I haven't heard anything official about the ARG, but I heard a rumor on another site that the ARG was going to be continued next summer.

tlcm - sorry to hear that news. you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Twinkle said...

Isibell: Yeah, the transference I'm having with Mad-Eye makes me want to laugh when I see Eye Patch man!

Aradia said...

tlcm - Sorry...I'm just catching up. Be strong baby, you are loved.

dennis,

So, no ARG in the hiatus. Oh well, I guess like cattygirl said, the holiday season will keep me busy, but January will be bleak!

4 hours 7 minutes left until LOST

Twinkle - I wana see Eye Patch man's eye roll around like Mad-Eye's. Oh wait...that would be WAY creepy. Never mind. ;)

What I want to know is if Jack is going to stand up and continue to be the underhanded, subtly devious man he's been turning into before our very eyes, or if he's going to fold like a cheep suit and do what he's told. I like devious Jack better. But then again I'm hot for Sawyer for the same reason so......

- Before the book club; she seems to have to pull herself together and feels better after hearing "Downtown" (was this their song?)
- She's clumsy and rattled (burning her hand on muffins) getting ready for the book club. Could it be the first time she's had people over socially since her husband's death?
- explains the statement by Juliet at Colleen's funeral -"I hate funerals"

It interesting to look at that situation now that we know more about them. I think these behaviors make more sense with Ben and Juliet dating, or having recently broken up.

Remember, Ben just found out he had a tumor two days before the plane crash. Juliet would have known about the tumor since she is one of the doctors. She just broke up with her ex-boyfriend and now she finds out he's dying. That would explain her being shook up at the book club meeting, and why he wasn't invited.

- explains the statement by Juliet at Colleen's funeral -"I hate funerals"

BTW, Who 'likes' funerals??

I think the epidode is gonna end with John and his merry band of followers finding The Flame Station and inside will be Mr.Patchy and it'll end with Mr.Patchy saying "you?" hahahaha

Black Swan said...

You could be right, dennis, but I personally don't believe anything Ben says.

btw, thanks for the link.

I think that Sawyer and Pickett are going to have a Thunderdome Steel Cage Match.

"Two men enter, one man leave!"

See you all tonight!!!!

isibell: yep Mad Eye started in book 4 and into 5. I think he was in the fight scene at the end of book 6 not sure. I've only read it twice so far. I got caught up in the TLE this summer and haven't gotten around to reading it again. But I have to say Mad Eye is much scarier than eye patch guy.

I hope the episode starts with Mr. Patchy and we get some answers!!!
