A TALE OF TWO CITIES - SEASON 3, EPISODE 1 (POST 2)

This is a "lag alleviation" post for "A Tale of Two Cities". So much great conversation resulted in the previous thread, we had to start a new one! While we try to come up with a definitive strategy for spoilers, please try to keep your discussions generally, "spoiler free". Happy "Day After Lost Day"!!!

No offence or anything...but...

I don't think Jack is under water.

If he were how did anyone close the hatch door between the inside and the ocean? I mean it would have to be closed before the water could be pumped out of the hall, allowing Juliet or Ben to take Jack back to his "room". I think the water is just a deterrent...a way to keep him guessing what's going on around him.

And for handcuffs to chafe like that, all the way around Kate's wrists from what I could see, it would mean she was struggling pretty hard. The kind of struggling that puts me in mind of bad things...from a girl’s perspective. Though I can't imagine that would be what happened. Ben keeps claiming that the others are the good guys. Can't see how forcible sex would count in the good column for anyone.

what does everyone think of Karl, the other prisoner that helped Sawyer escape. Seemed weird to me that without Sawyer and he ever speaking in detail, he knew Sawyer came from a camp, there were other survivors there, that they came from a plane. How did he know all of this.

Is he an other spy, or is he one of the kids we never see in the other camp?

Here's the link where I read that there might be "extend edition" reruns of Season 3:

LINK

Maybe the scenes with the little girl will show up in the rerun--or in the Season 3 DVD, as Sean said.

Melissa_Lossa said...

isibell - I'll admit, that was the first thing I thought of when they brought Kate to the cage as well. She looked pretty ragged and defeated.

As for the underwater hatch - why would you have a door underwater that opened that easily? Doesn't it seem that you'd want a lock on that kind of a door?!

Deanna said...

kvonhard: The one inside his arm isn't new, either Lostpedia has a pretty good picture of it from season 1.

Melissa_Lossa said...

diggity - I want to know about Karl, too! If he's a spy, he's doing a pretty crappy job. The only question he asked was "which way is your camp?" I'm pretty sure the Others know the answer to that one. Maybe he's just playing dumb. ;)

Aradia said...

Melissa

I totally agree about the hatch being to easy to open too. And was there a window behind Jack on his side of the glass or was that a reflection from her side? I have to go back and watch the show again tonight...

Deanna said...

Diggity amd Melissa: Also, Carl told Sawyer to run "that way!" A different direction that the one he ran. Was he really trying to get away and sent Sawyer in another direction just to split up or was it to make sure Sawyer was caught? Perhaps Carl was a Tailie and kidnapped in the first night or two. He's been there long enough to be a: desperate or b: brainwashed. Look at the lenghths Michael went to after just a few days with them.

Another thing I find interesting is the Others dressing hillbilly style in their first encounters with the Losties. 1: if we dress nice they'll think they're getting out of here and we can't have that for all kinds of reasons and/or 2: we're living more primitive than you and we're tough so you don't want anything to do with us.

Someone said something about Walt being "let go". Nah, he and Michael will be back. Desmond was on the water for two weeks and ended up right back on the island.

Jason- your thoughts on Juliet and BEn are interesting. Perhaps there is a man of science/man of faith type of conflict going on in Othertown. Juliet=man of faith, Ben=man of science. Don't have more time to think on this right now. Gotta go.

kvonhard: electromagnetic field intensity drops off as an inverse square of the distance. so a plane twice as far from the island only gets 25% of the magnetic field intensity. it's easy for me to believe that no other planes were within "range" of the magnetic field over the south pacific.

oxillini said...

can i get a high five from engineer27 for working inverse square into the comments section? come on, don't leave a brotha hangin'!

Hey Gang,

That was an awesome episode last night! Sorry I haven't commented too much I' going to save my theories for the upcomming TLC podcast which I'm an going to record early on sunday afternoon. Remember e-mail your thoughts theories, and mp3 comments to passafistwastaken@gmail.com. I'm going to extend the deadline to sunday at 9:00am (EST), unfortunetly, my co-host Steve will be away and I really want somebody to banter back and forth with in the studio, so we're going to record it on suday afternoon. WORD UP!!!

Dennis said...

kvonhard said... Oh! And about the plane crashing ... I'm still not convinced that Desmond not pushing the button caused it. If so, how come we never saw another plane or other airborne vehicular mode of transportation crash in last night's episode?

It's the old "if a tree fall in a forest" analogy.

The EMP caused by not pushing the button won't make a plane crash unless there is a plane already in the area.

If a plane just flys over the island, the navigation systems may get thrown off - like with Flight 815, but it's not going to crash.

Flight 815 was just in the wrong place (over the island) at the wrong time (when the EMP blast happened).

Midnight: I hear you. :-) I gotta find a way to participate without having to read everything!

Scoutpost said...

Kvonhard- re: the electromagnetic field, we have to remember that we don't know where the island is actually located. Flt. 815 was traveling from Sydney to LA, so we assume it's in the South Pacific somewhere. But the drug plane that Eko's brother was on was from Nigeria (west Africa), going who knows where- but most likely too small a plane to carry enough fuel to get out into the South Pacific without making several stops along the way, and if you're trying to unload a bunch of drugs, why go to all that trouble. So most likely there aren't regular flight patterns or other flying objects coming near the island since we don't know really the whereabouts of it. So we have to ask, why did these particular vessels end up near the island at the particular times the EM field was active. Could be the only people who end up on the island were meant to be there...this of course is one of the major unanswered questions and mysteries of the island itself.

wv=bedmm- oh yeah bed, mmmmmm I could go for some sleep.

Former TLEC lurker and now first time poster. Wanted to add in to the discussion about Carrie. Back in The Moth in Season 1 on the DVD commentaries TPTB say the shot when Charlie's hand pokes out of the ground when he follows the moth out of the cave in is a shout out to Carrie. So is this just a something that's repeated on the show like Moonlight Serenade or is it more meaningful? Your guess is as good as mine.

Scoutpost said...

ahh- no worries kvonhard- I see your point. Sorry I misunderstood.
And, BTW that is a good point.

thinbluemime said...

"Moonlight Serenade"

The Miller estate authorized an official Glenn Miller "ghost band" in 1946. ... This
ghost band played to very large audiences all across the U.S., including a few dates at
the Hollywood Palladium, where the original Miller band played in 1941.

By the early 1950s, various bands were copying the Miller style of clarinet led reeds and
muted trumpets... This, coupled the success of The Glenn Miller Story, led the Miller
estate to ask Ray McKinley to lead a new ghost band. This 1956 band is the original
version of the current ghost band that still tours today.

Did anyone see "The Daily Show" use of LOST last night? I just saw it (we DVR it). Samantha Bee was doing a story about the earth's population and used the picture of the LOST Cast to demonstrate the percentage of ethnicity in population. (so much white, black, hispanic, asian, etc.) Then she said "...and 1% Iraqi. Then there's that smokey monster and that polar bear. What's up with that?" (I really don't do it justice.)

Capcom said...

Oxillini; Soylent fish bisquits! You killed me with that one! :-D

FYSB; now everytime I see "FYSB" I will see fish bisquit. :-)

I heard the whales and/or dolphins. But it didn't have to be real, they might even have no whales left in their aquariums, but they played a recording for Jack to deduce via senses also that he was underwater.
Poor Jack, he's a broken man. They tore him down to build him back up in their image.

great new casting spoiler! http://www.spoilerfix.com/lost.php

Wow! Firefly rocked!

Welcome, Memphish!

miniver_cheevy: It seems interesting of the three placements of our Losties, Sawyer's brought out something good in him, Jack's brought out his worst side, and Kate's...well...her treatment was the best physically (maybe? I wish we knew how the cuffs did that to her wrists) but the most personaly threatening.

Twinkle said...

I don't think all the fight is out of Jack yet. He broke down once but that doesn't mean his spirit is broken. Stubborn self-reliant, self-centerd pride is not so easily broken. And would it be a bad thing if it were? I can't wait to have more time to check out what they're saying about Jack on SotL. The latest post is about him, but I haven't been able to get caught up on the posts.

Scoutpost said...

Wow! I haven't been over to SoTL at all since the premiere- guess I'll have a lot more reading to do.

Twinkle said...

TBM: IMHO, Carl set Sawyer up so he could get away.

Interesting parallels. And of course the Others, with their outside information, know all about the things these three have done so they could personally tailor their captivity.

Capcom said...

TBM......very interesting train of thought there with the fire, water, etc.

Gosh, I am still having a very difficult time retraining myself not to think, "what does it mean, will it lead to a clue or glyph location?" :-( **help**

thinbluemime said...

One more thought for the night:

Dickens, "A Tale of Two Cities" was originally called
"Recalled to Life" (Resurrection) wikipedia has the details

Before a "Resurrection", doesn't one have to first DIE ?
Are the Losties Dead? (and I dont care what the Lost writers have said, cause they lie a lot, LOL)

Justin said...

capcom - alas, we all have those symptoms of TLE Withdrawal :(

And, about the flashbacks...I liked them. I think that we really learned more about Jack, not his father. All of a sudden the dad isn't the monster that he has been made out to be.

However, I still don't think that it was significant enough to be a SEASON PREMIER LOL flashback. But great nevertheless.

thinbluemime said...

mstk, I dunno :)

We got to see the plane crash again , from an entirely different perspective
We got to see an entirely different side of the Others
We got to see a brand new hatch, that is named after a mythological monster that guards the entrance to HELL

I'd say pretty spectacular :)

Twinkle said...
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
Twinkle said...

mstk: Yeah, in the flashbacks we learned that Jack's father was not the complete monster that he had been portrayed to be and we found out that Jack has more monster in him than we thought. Maybe it's just me but the two things I was most shocked about were the implied threat in Kate's treatment and a really ugly side coming out of Jack.

Justin said...

thinbluemind - Yeah, that was totally awesome and definitely made the show worthwhile. But I'm talking about the trademark "character flashbacks", which IMO were more on the normal Lost side than the "season premier of the best show ev4r" side. Dont'get me wrong, I loved the episode.

maven said...

The Jack flashback for the premiere really showed how vulnerable and tormented he is. He feels tremendous guilt for thinking wrong of his father (thinking Sarah and Christian were together), when all his father was doing was trying to help him. Jack drove his father back to drink which eventually killed him. Jack may seem tough on the outside, but he's a shell of man...devastated by his divorce and his father's death. He truly seems beaten by the end of the episode. Ben and Juliet seem to be playing Good Cop/Bad Cop with him, and it appears that Jack is beginning to trust Juliet. He can never trust Ben.

So much of Lost is based on character, and the back stories are slowly letting us see everyone's motivations. I find it interesting.

Admin: I hope that $9.99 is not per/minute! LOL

Wow, So much to catch up, and typically I'm really busy at work -d'oh.

One point I picked up on that I like is the whole concept of The Others utilising underground passages to get around the island. Lets face it if your relaesing hungry polar bears into the wild the last thing you want to do is run into them.

anyway - I better get back to work

I read most of the comments here and I have some thoughts on Kate's bloody wrists:

A. She was abused in some way

b. She will doing anything she possibly can to escape, including struggling with those handcuffs.

c. She knew that she would see Jack and Sawyer again and that they would fight their captures even harder if they saw that she was hurt by them.

I'm leaning toward b or c personally.

CattyGirl said...

Also on the subject of Kate choosing:

She may have the opportunity to choose between Jack and Sawyer and I think that we shouldn't assume that she is going to choose the one she loves. She may choose who she thinks is more vulnerable in this situation, knowing that the other man will be able to escape on his own.

I posted this in TLEC, but no one had answered me. Any help?

I have a question. I was reading in another forum that has nothing to do with Lost (shocker, I know) that there are 3 videos on youtube pertaining to the Lost Experience. This is the desciption of part one from the guy on that forum: 'part I' -> described the dharma stations on the island and gave bullet points in regards to what each station was there for'

I don't remember a video like this? Do you think it is fan made or was it in the game and I just can't remember it?

Part 2 - the Sri Lanka video
Part 3 - the last part of the video where Rachel finds out the truth

Morning everyone (at least for me!):

Thrasher: Congrats on the new job and all it's possibilities. Brookstone is a cool store, and I'm sure much better than the travel industry! However, we will miss you checking in all day.

Ryandrumz: It's good morning for you, too! I don't think they'd do that to Kate. A little too out there, even for Lost. I think something else is in store for the 3 of them. The Others really seem to be into behavior modification (they almost seem zombie-like or Stepford Wife-ish). Maybe they intend to "experiment" with Kate/Jack/Sawyer as a triangle...put them in different situations and see how they interact?

(just had to do wv 3x!)

catty: perhaps he was talking about the hoffett films video? it's probably non-canon but hasn't (to the best of my knowledge) been unequivocally dubbed fake. i think team lena is the official tlec scholar on that video. if she's around sometime, ask her about it.

Hi Cattygirl,

Yes I've seen the video, ages ago, it was very well done but definately fan made, it makes some good guesses but in light of TLE and the start of Season 3 it's complete hockum.

Thanks oxillini.

Thanks Dark Angel - I haven't even seen it.

CattyGirl said... Dennis - Do you think Dwight tried to return it? ;)

If he did, I would love to see how that went! :)

Cattygirl: If it's the Hoffitt film you are talking about...there was a lot of speculation about it. There were some shots in it that might have been used in one of TLE clues (I forget the number of the clue...the one where there were many images quickly going by of a lot of weird things). TeamLena was very involved in trying to figure it out. Someone with Hoffitt's initials was her friend on MySpace. I don't think it really went anywhere, though.

I guess I should try and be on here as much as possible and for-go working but I have things to tie up or my old boss will kick me....

Maven - I guess I skipped all that when it wasn't panning out. Thanks for the info.

As I recall, the Fan-produced Dharma film showed Dharma logos for each of 6 stations, then a list of experiments carried out at that station.

It ended with some grainy film of a white-haired gentleman, ostensibly Alvar, surveying constuction at one of the sites. It should be easy to find on YouTube. I would look it up for you, but sadly I also have work which calls me to duty.

Have a great weekend everyone! Or should I say a great weekend?

Hi Guys,

Well it's time for me to head off home. I won't be online over the weekend as I have guests over from Germany and I have to install a new hard drive in my laptop.

I'll be back on Monday - have fun, don't forget to contribute to the podcast.

See you round

Namaste

Hi All!

Dark Angel, you simply must go see the online Sharper Image catalog. Nice personal home electronic things of all kinds. It used to be a "for the man who has everything" type of catalog, but now is more accessible price-wise. Although a couple years ago in the Christmas catalog, they were selling life-size models of Robbie the Robot (from 1950s scifi movie fame)! Robbie only cost about the price of a small compact car. :-)

And for you Thrasher, I will make sure to purchase some holiday presents at Brookstone, to support your company.

I very much like that Hoffitt film, whether it was fake or not. It looks a lot like the old Bell Laboratory educational films that we (us Boomers) used to get to watch in school.

Dennis: Engineer27, we need to talk. Do you know what this is about?
Engineer27: My, uh, italics?
Dennis: Yeah. Or, uh, your lack thereof. I’m counting and I only see one in your last post.
Engineer27: Umm-hmm.
Dennis: Now, it’s up to you whether or not you want to just do the bare minimum. Well, like Dark Angel, for example, has 15 pieces of italics in his last post. And a terrific smile.

Hey all here's my late late post. Run a day late for the shows and was too busy discussing it in chat and stuff to come in yesterday. Anyway, some thoughts:

1) Kate has what appears an obvious missing time chunk from what we saw (I know a lot of people have been talking about this). My theory is that the first few episodes will be like the first few of Season 2 where we'll see the time period from different perspectives.

2) Sawyer and Jack have had very similar "conditioning". Both have been taunted with food/water, both have had the futility of escape (and I suspect both escape attempts were totally staged) showed to them and both of them have performed an act of kindness (Jack asking if his ex was happy and Sawyer giving kate a fish biscuit). They've also both made acts of submission and doing as they are told.

3) They know information about Jack. We don't know how they got it. They could have been monitoring him from way before the island, they could have gotten the information from the outside (THF?) it could be the potentially brain scanning "monster" or it could just be that they drugged Jack and had him tell them stuff, which he no longer recalls.

4) They are all really hungry and thirsty. They told us it was because of the drugs, but it could be that they have been there a lot longer then they think they have and that would fit in with the idea that they extracted the information from Jack while he was drugged and just pretended they already knew.

5) The begining bit reminded me of those bits in *MASH* when the helicopters with injured people came in. That is to say, it's not a scheduled, planned thing, but it is something that they are prepared for and are not suprised by.

6) That plan explosion was... odd. Definetly seemed to fit the explenation from season 2, but it just didn't seem right to me. can't really place it.

7) Is there a significance that they were reading Carrie?

8) They have CD's so while that doesn't neccisarily mean that they are still in regular contact with the outside world it does mean that they had contact with in in the early 90s when CD's were becomming all the rage.

9) IIRC, Downtown was written by Tony *Hatch*. Who also wrote the theme tune for Oz soap, Neighbours.

10) I thought it was a great first episode. Started with a plot twist and then gave us the neccisary groundwork for the season. Great. Wasn't so keen on Jacks flashbacks in themself, but I believe they were significant.

Awsome-O!!!

I will look for you Capcom!! And CattyGirl!!!

Only 5 more hours of me being a travel agent (sheds a tear).

Is that enough flare?

Fenris: I was wondering when you would show up here with your usual superb observations!

1. Yes, something happened to Kate before she was put in the cage. She either struggled and tried to escape (ala Jack and Sawyer) and that's why her wrists are scraped. Or the cuffs were just too tight (remember Ben asked her to tighten them). But she obviously didn't eat any of the goodies Ben offered her. She was hungry and eagerly accepted the fish biscuit.

2. Re the info on Jack. Could they possibly have wi-fi internet in Othertown? That thick file on Jack could be just blank pages with a cover to make him think they know all about him.

3. Re Carrie: I think it was just a shoutout to Stephen King...a really big fan of the show.

4. There does seem to be a lot of "modern" conveniences in Othertown...the CD's and player, the kitchen seems current, clothes aren't dated. This is much more than a "food drop" in perpetuity.

All in all, loved the premiere. As usual, a lot is left for our discussions.
