The End - Series Finale

After six seasons, this is it. There is no description for tonight's finale, but I don't think there needs to be.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all of you. You are an amazing group of people. This blog started in other, perhaps more capable hands, but I have been honored to take you through the last couple of seasons.

Thank you to David and Steve for your phenomenal podcast, and thank you to the crew over at LostArgs, especially Zort/Ian, for being such an incredible sister site.

Tonight, Lost comes to an end. However, I know that this will not be the end of this community, or of the friendships hatched from it. We have been a part of each others lives - some for a few months, and some for years. As with the Losties, we have seen births and deaths, life changes and simple pleasures. We have shared more than a television show - we have shared our lives.

The Lost Community will live on. I know it. In the meantime, Peace and Namaste.

- Melissa

I will never understand why you perpetuate an argument and when you can't get them to agree or give up you call them a child. Own your share in the argument. If they're a child then so are you.

@SG, I just think it's fun.

Strange way to get your kicks.

I would really hate for Lost to go down in TV history as being merely a show about a purgatory story as well, Fenris.

I agree with a lot of what you expressed SG. Also, why would Rose give herself cancer in the FS? I know the theories about how Locke put himself in the chair...etc...so I'm sure there are theories abounding as to why Rose 'chose' cancer for herself in the afterlife. I'd just really like to hear TPTB explain why it made sense to them to have that in there, other than as a faux-issue to throw us off and make it seem like real life in another universe, like Fringe.

I just get the feeling that if there were seven seasons (used wisely) more issues could have been worked out in a more coherent way, unless coherence was never an issue with TPTB anyway. JMHO

Well, discord and name calling isn't fun for everyone, especially the people here at TLC, as it has been expressed many many times this season to all the new people migrating over from other blogs. Overall it's good to know one's audience when making fun or stirring up trouble, whatever the case may be. As posted on the front page, TLC was started as a "...friendly place to engage in "watercooler" discussions about the TV show LOST.." If that atmosphere doesn't fit or suit someone, or is too whimpy a venue, it would be nice to just accomodate the norm for courtesy's sake or refrain. IMHO.

Amy Lynn said...

Didn't mean to name call. I just think it's silly that when EVERYONE (including ABC) calls the ALT purgatory, that someone would go, "Oh, it's not purgatory". That's like saying everyone died on 815. Cute theory, but definitely not true.

Tess315 said...

For anyone who's interested DarkUFO has posted that the will be re airing The End Sat along with JKL Aloha Lost. They don't know if it will be enhanced or not.

2costa said...

i agree the sideways wasn't purgatory, because they didn't have to work through anything to get out of it. Thats why i said it was pre-heaven, where having your body still matters. The island certainly wasn't purgatory either. Mike's soul being trapped on the island is an afterthought at best.

I just wish if the sideways was gonna be pointless, they would have used the 9 hours spent on it for more island time. If jack and locke didn't let go in the sideways are we supposed to think jack couldn't beat mib?`

2costa said...

miles straum is like maelstrom so is the answer the island is a maelstrom? who said it's purgatory damon or carlton?

Amy Lynn said...

@2costa, Damon and Carlton haven't said a thing yet, as you know, probably in fear of being unmasked as really bad writers.

Amy Lynn said...

Why Did the Writers Give the Middle Finger to the Fans?

Despite his speech about "if we can't live together we're going to die alone."

He died alone in the bamboo forest... yes, others waited for him, welcomed him, etc... but he died alone.

And for what I can see, Christian Shepard is the only one who we saw go into the light. He moved on. For all we know, Jack was just welcomed into a group waiting to do so?

SG-you pose some really good questions in your "rant"--- and I can't say that I love the "they're all dead" concept either...my heart sunk that it was such an unorginal idea.... like Zort said after you, I'd have appreciated a few less mysteries that didn't get solved (though, they were good distractors, if that was their point) and I would shorten a few of them so that we got some richer resolutions.

I also agree with AL- for how cutting edge the show was... the end was a near "who shot jr moment" for me...Fenris, I do think LOST in its entirity, was better than its ending... and it will be sad if that's what it is defined by- but also have to say that someone did something right, in that we've still not been unanimous in interpretations..

I've said before that I can't get in the fully purgatory, way station, limbo, etc....I see elements of it for sure and i respect those who are stoically there- but I see both timelines as real- and yep, 2c, I think Kate missed Jack so much because she had lived a long time off the island. ;-)

"@2costa, Damon and Carlton haven't said a thing yet."

How can you say both of these things.... are you not contradicting yourself here. As well as saying that someone didn't get the finale, when your argument is based on your opinion of what it is... if they haven't said anything yet, how can you claim EVERYONE said it was???

And if you have a link to where it was said to be "Purgatory." I would like to see it and read or view for myself.

Beverly said...

Now I'm starting to feel like the odd one out. I thought the end was geniously done - poetic. Unlike some of you, I loved the way it was presented. It was very moving. I couldn't stop crying for at least an hour after the show was over and even a few days later I was breaking out in tears when I thought about it.

I can't adequately describe the feeling that I had. It just left me with the feeling that while the puzzles and mysteries were part of what made watching the show fun, in the end they were insignificant. But not in a bad "the writers wasted my time with them" sort of way. They became insignificant when I was confronted with something much larger - larger than life (which is what the last 10 minutes felt like to me). In comparison, they just ceased to matter.

memphish said...

You aren't alone LostIt. I liked it too.

Capcom said...

While I don't particularly feel the way you do about the ending Losit, I can sure recognize that what you said is in line perfectly with what Charlie said about "material" things not mattering anymore. So I think that your feelings about the ending are much more in line with TPTB's intentions than mine admittedly are. So peeps like me are more the odd ones out. :-)

The island is very happy
as long as the light can glow
You dream about sailing home, but
the island will not allow
Just think of the world’s infection,
perhaps cataclysmic end
It’s all for your own protection,
we not blowing smoke, my friend

Under the sea
Under the sea
Maybe you crash here,
maybe you flash here,
turning the key,
Off of the cliff, you take a leap
Down in the hatch, we never sleep
Dharma beer drinking
keeps us from sinking
under the sea

You come on a rigged up freighter
with only a mop and broom
Bad news about Widmore’s freighter
One death and it all goes boom
Too heavy for helicopter,
you fly on Ajira’s planes
No matter they’re rigged with duct tape,
You’ve finally escaped the chains!

Under the sea
Under the sea
Donkey wheel portal
Plus you’re immortal
Jake’s guarantee
We’ll send a friendly submarine
You drink the juice, don’t ask what it mean
We’ve got your drug here,
Just don’t unplug here
under the sea!

You can atone here
won’t die alone here
new inductee,
Even the workmen at the school
They think the statue’s groovy cool
Just a suggestion
don’t ask a question
under the sea

The doc and the Locke,
the con and the Swan,
the Kate feel the hate,
and Eko be gone,
You bleed for Sayid,
Beware crazy Claire,
and Boone the buffoon has pens,
(yeah)

The Troup left the group,
the Steve had to leave
Forgot who got shot,
but still you can grieve
To talk to Danielle
you might have to yell
The whispers freak her out

Under the sea
Under the sea
Jack likes to cry,
we never knew why,
you caged detainee
Maybe your luck is running low
Maybe you’re stuck here from long ago
Every survivor,
Looking Glass diver
under the sea
Some will be good here
some carry wood here
under the sea
Sky’s turning violet,
go get the pilot
Adam and Eve here
they’d love to leave here
Maybe you’ve tried ways
Have you tried sideways?

I want to know - if MIB became the smoke monster after going into the cave of light, why didn't that happen to Jack when he was there?

I don't think MIB became the smoke monster. Consider that Jacob 'buried' mother and MIB in the Adam & Eve cave, I am more inclined to believe that smokey became MIB (or at least, MIB was the first corpse he disrespected by wearing his face).

Here's my theory on the light...

We know smokey can't cross an electromagnetic field (consider the sonic fences). When Desmond entered the pool of light, the electromagnetic discharge seemed on a fairly big scale but dissipated quickly. Therefore, it is my belief that when Jacob knocked MIB out and he fell into the hole, his body discharged the electromagnetism down there... without the field momentarily in place, smokey got out.

Amy Lynn said...

@Steve, I like your theory a lot. In the clip show, however, they specifically said that MIB became the smoke monster. But I like your idea better!

Unknown said...

Thank you. :) Of course, TPTB have lied-to/mislead us before. It just seems unlikely that after every smokey sighting he ran back to the caves and turning himself into a shriveled corpse.

For all of you sideways/last ten minutes haters out there, including myself. I have come up with an interpretation of the sideways and the last ten minutes that may help the medicine go down.

The sideways was in fact the result of the jughead incident with julliette. The timeline did get split into 2 streams as faraday had talked about. As many speculated the timeline would have to reintegrate together by the end, just as the stream would past the boulder.

The sideways is what would have happened and jack would have failed in killing mib and let the island sink. Jack's recurring neck wound and the sunken island showed that urgency. Had jack failed to let go or have gotten locke to let go in the sideways, jack would have lost and let smokey sink the island and escape. Desmond was the failsafe in the sense that if jack would have failed, desmond would have sunken the island and allowed the timeline to have one last iteration, which would be the sideways. Hawkings in the sideways would have had no reason to fear desmond's meddling back on the island if it didn't matter. They would have had a last chance to be with their families like the widmores, but the world would have come to an end much sooner.

When jack had had his plan about doing jughead they knew that if they all showed up at lax they wouldn't know each other. Had Jack failed on the island the sideways wouldn't have morphed into bleed through heaven at the end, it would have become the primary reality. All the super wonky stuff happened in the sideways after jack killed mib and repaired the well, none of the stuff in the sideways that happened after that point would have happened, it would have just become the primary reality, just like the island reality was revealed as the only real reality. If this is the case the island timeline may have become the new wonky "place they made to find each other" if jack had failed in his mission. Everyone would have gone on to live their sideways lives to their natural end. The island would have seemed like the dream or the deja vu. This may seem far fetched, but I think that possibility was exactly what sideways hawkings was afraid of. For this to be true the island time doesn't necessarily have to have been the heaven, perhaps they would have all met on the island in eko's church and toddled off into the light from the island.

2costa said...

So the reintigration process of the timeline would have made the other timeline become the pre-heaven/purgatory/limbo the sideways became to protect the space time continuum from the paradox of 2 realitys. Jacob was so concerned if they failed because something really bad was gonna happen, not because he wanted all the losties' souls to have a reunion some day. Sideways sun bleeding over into the island and desmond traveling to the sideways seems to give credence to the idea that the sideways was real. I also think that before flocke found out he could use desmond to sink the island, he was planning on throwing a live candidate into the light. To make himself mortal and then escape.

The hurley/ben island time represents the extra time jacob bought for the whole world through his and everyone else's sacrifices. If the sideways would have been the real timeline something really bad was going to happen sooner than later.

@Zort: Dang it! And I thought I had last wrapped up!

Just Thinking said...

I watched the clip show tonight-and found it pretty moving. One "answer" from Damon & Carlton in it too- MIB really did become the smoke monster, it wasn't just Smokey taking MIB's form the way he took Locke's for instance. Sometimes he took the form of his own body, but it was still "his".

Amy Lynn said...

@JT, I actually dislike that answer. I choose to believe that Darlton was wrong about that. :)

Just Thinking said...

Lol- AL-well I guess we can make up our own answers since they're leaving so much to us anyway.

Just Thinking said...

Interesting pop up in the enhanced finale- about many groups have lived on the island- including Sumerian and Akkadian- even older than the Egyptians.

Just Thinking said...

Another pop up- the embodiment of evil is dead- very definitive.

Beverly said...

I just watched The End for the third and final time. I have to say, the pop-ups detracted from the magic of the show for me. At least there weren't any during the last 10 minutes.

This has been one heck of a ride. It's time for me to let go now and move on to re-engage with my real life soul connections (they have been somewhat neglected as I've spent so much time engrossed in the show and the resulting discussions).

Thank you all for being here to share the LOST journey. It was more meaningful because of you.

Namaste and Aloha.

2costa said...

for years we wondered how jacob or hawkings had knowledge of the future. If the sideways is the place there is no "now", then that explains how characters knew future stuff if they crossed over. Desomond was wrong about the island and the sideways and jack was right that it all mattered. If desmond didn't go to the sideways and vice versa, then sayid may have never turned back to good or jack may have never let go in time. A whole host of island events were influenced by godlike desmond that had knowlege of the whole timeline via the sideways. I think the sideways still represented what would have happened if jack failed to fix the light, minus the wonky ending. The incident caused the sideways to be created in so far as it put jack and co. back in 2007. I think it's highly possible that this played out before, but jack didn't have the weapon of "desmond".

I liked how julliette theory about the vending machine paralleled the island. If you turn off the power the candy drops right down. Jack in effect unplugged the island let the candy drop down and plugged it back in. Julliette meant not only did the vending machine plan worked, but jughead put jack in a position to win on the island in 2007 worked as well.

kate and sawyer jumping off the cliff also paralleled, when they dove in the water to get the briefcase in season one. Kate getting the dress from desmond for the ball, mirrored when tom friendly gave her the dress on hydra island in season 2.

Jack at several points could have made a choice that derailed the sideways. If jack had decided to leave on the plane after he killed mib, the island would have sunk. He was set up all this time to be able to make the right choice of his life to fix the island. If jack would have decided to try to live after he fixed the island and stay and rule would have been bad as well. Hurley in the sideways after he crossed over was obviously the wise hurley who had ruled the island with ben and thats part of why he made sayid follow the rules in the sideways. If jack leaves after he kills mib or doesn't die, that hurley never comes into existence.

i also noticed that the reason they needed someone like desmond to break the island, is he had to withstand the EM energy and live in order to tell jack or whoever what he did and how to fix it. There were multiple skeletons in there, so i bet it's always been a two man job.

Christain in the church at the end seemed to prove It was really him on the island at times. If not why would he be in the church with all these people.

I think part of why locke was so happy when he crossed over, was he saw that jack had completed what he started and his death wasn't for nothing.

Sawyer's sideways reality seems to go against any purgatory theories. He had already worked through the cooper thing in island time , so why does he have to rehash it in the sideways. Also i dont think having a booty call with rebecca mader is what purgatory is all about.

What did kate work through in the sideways?

I also noticed that jack was used by jacob in the same way locke was used by ben. Locke was annointed leader of the others, but never really got a chance to lead and had to trade his life not soon after. Jack was also used as the sacrifical lamb candidature to fix the island and pave the way for hugo.

I also think that jack almost commited suicide in a sense the water would have healed him, but he wanted to move on on a high note of heroism, not lead the island. After bathing in the light jack had no need to go back to mortal life, just like many people that have near death experiences are sort of cheesed of to have left the light.

Amy Lynn said...

I love Lostpedia:

"You" is the last word spoken in the series when John Locke greets Jack in the chapel: "We've been waiting for you." Alternatively, the last word spoken in the real timeline is "cool," spoken by Hurley in response to Ben's agreeing to become his Number 2.

Just Thinking said...

If anyone's still about- what do you think of the how the appearance of the people in church sometimes must not have matched when they died? Aaron for sure- we know he had to be at least 3 when he died. But also, Libby, Penny, Desmond, Sawyer, Kate- they all could have been much older than they looked on the island when they died.

Is this just from Jack's point of view? It's not just a matter of appearance- but also experience and memories- as we see with Hugo & Ben- they talked about their later times on the island- times after Jack died.

Just trying to fit the pieces together.

memphish said...

Just Thinking - I think the people in the church look like their 2004 selves, the selves that flew on flight 815 originally, so Aaron is an infant though the "time" that passed in X world didn't quite equal up with the amount of time it took him to be born on Island.

Amy Lynn said...

You do have to feel sorry for Aaron that the most important people he was ever with were the 815'ers. I could understand Kate and Claire, but everyone else... and to go to heaven eternally a baby?

Just Thinking said...

Oh dear. So they look like 2004 selves, but have memories of their life until they died, and Aaron has at least memories to age three, but is a baby.

2costa said...

where was charlie hume in the church?

Amy Lynn said...

@2costa, apparently he had more important experiences than Aaron.

Just Thinking said...

OK- so I have decided to believe that the 2004 forms they take in the church are only the masks over their true essence, and when they move on into the light the will exist in the totality of the true form. That may be something that is just energy, without the body at all. So Aaron will not be an infant forever.

Amused2bHere said...

I just read Vozzek's "Things I Noticed" over at DarkUFO.

Interesting point he makes is that the reason why Jack's appendix had to be removed by Juliet was so that when Smocke stabs him there is no appendix to rupture. It mirrors how Locke's kidney donation saves his life when Ben shoots him in the back where the kidney should have been.

Wow. I totally missed that.

TheOtherLisa said...

oh, interesting about all the kidney stuff... I actually wondered if there really was no appendix removal, but the scar was really the knife wound.... but your version makes much more sense!

Capcom said...

I agree, interesting about the appendix and kidney removal correlation.

I think that a lot of people think that the afterlife scar is the knife wound.

Who knows. :-\

bigdog said...

Just a drive by to say Hi. Hope everyone is well.

Amused2bHere said...

Capcom, I agree that the X-verse scar is the knife wound, just like the neck wound "bled" over into the X-verse. But in the real world on the Island, Juliet actually removed his appendix, and that turned into a good thing because then Smocke didn't knife him in it. The space was empty. It wasn't just a pointless plot device, after all!
And it does mirror the kidney removal in Locke.

Of course, it makes sense that X-verse Jack would not remember his appendix being removed, because if Oceanic 815 never crashed, then Juliet never removes his appendix...and the scar he finds is the knife wound "bleeding" through his consciousness.

Just another example of how brilliant the writers of LOST really are.

Amy Lynn said...

Amused2bHere, I beg to differ, as usual. This part of the finale was directly stolen from the Sixth Sense.

Capcom said...

LOL, Amused, let's hear it for things that didn't turn out to be pointless plot devices! Yay! But don't get me started on the no-815-crash red herring, I still feel burned about that one.

Don't mind me, I'm just a finale-cynic for now. Maybe I'll come around some day with help from the Locos here. :-o
