I wish they would produce an Ab Aeterno Part II, where we flashback through important island events, both previously seen and unseen, through Richard's POV.
Otherwise, I'm not sure how we're going to get answers about how The Others were intially formed, who really wrote all of those lists and why, plus the reason why Richard claimed (late last season) that he "saw them all die"?
They could do the episode in the style of "The Other 48 Days".
I think the reason Richard said that he saw all of them die is because he saw all of them COME to the island. If he thinks the island is hell, then that would make sense. Although why he would say that to Sun, who is um, on the island also, I don't know.
@Ginger - Don't look at the rest of them. I only looked because I don't plan to watch them. (Of course, I've said that after every episode since mid-season 3 so it's pretty meaningless.)

I should make clear that I'm not advocating for people to read the titles. I just didn't want people to be strongly fearing the possibility of accidentally running across most of them.
Personally, I'm amazed that so many of you have the will to stay away from them. I don't know how you do it!

SG & AL - LOL, I have never understood the Kate hate. Please, no need to explain. From my POV, I love Sawyer & Jack so I totally understand where she's coming from there. If I could have both...well...It would be a hard decision. JK, kind of ;)
S1 Kate was one of my favorite characters ever. I just feel the writers haven't been very consistent in writing her.

lost2010 - ya, you have to stick w/ it till the end. You can't miss any opportunity to see James Ford/LaFleur/Sawyer. You never know when you will see him again. Savor each viewing;)

@AL: Well, for example, "The Lighthouse" turned out to be an actual lighthouse, but had no idea how it tied into the story. These titles turn out to make sense when the episode is seen, but, IMHO, is wide open to interpretation until it is seen.

In writing that Priest scene, I'm sure the writers knew they'd (or wanted to) get a reaction out of many viewers... of fear, dismay, hopelessness truly the feeling of what "hell" might be....my offline friend put it in the best perspective for me: Alpert had to have NOTHING, especially not hope, to make his decision for "good" or "bad".....otherwise he'd have something to gain and the "test" would be corrupted...

Here's a question, what is the deal w/the cabin? They better explain that one. At what point does Jacob ash himself in there to protect himself from Smokey? If that's the consensus on what happened. I'm assuming that is what happened because Ilana & team went there looking for Jacob, I think. And it seems obvious that Smokey wasn't contained in the cabin because he has been roaming the island judging & killing for a while. I thought maybe MIB/Christian used Claire to break the ash circle, but that seems too recent since Ilana said that someone else had been using the cabin for a long time. And Jacob has been at the statue for as far back as we have seen, so far. Do I have my facts straight?
Maybe when they show Ilana's story, which I'm assuming they will, that whole cabin business will be explained.
TOL - yes, we have to choose on our own, or it's meaningless. Which I think is what Jacob was talking about to Richard. The reason he doesn't, or can't, interfere.

that promo made me think, that perhaps widmore knew mib was going to take over locke's form and would have his memories. mib obviously knew widmore at some point or he is accessing locke's memories about widmore. Saying that a war was coming and if john locke wasnt there the wrong side would win, might have been a slick way to trick mib into a feeling of confidence that his flocke plan was going to work. SO what im saying is that widmore was lying when he said the wrong side would win if locke wasn't there was to also trick mib into thinking that widmore is not on the side of jacob.
Knowing what we know about smokey, it opens up to a lot of con's if you know mib is going to scan someone. smokey scanned ben, so it's possible that he saw widmore saying the island would be his again in one of ben's memories. This was smokey thinks he knows what widmore wants.
saying stuff to someone you know smokey is gonna scan or take the form of is like telling your secret plan(but not really,actually a fake plan), while your enemy is around the corner, but he thinks you dont know he is there. sorry think thats more confusing...

Hi Locos, sorry I've been awol for a spell but just skim read the comments.
I think that there was a definite reference to the garden of Eden in this episode...the amazing tree that Richard buries the cross by is massively similar to many film depictions/references to the Tree of Knowledge. I think that this mainly is for symbolic implication to Richard's personal story arc of unearthing his 'innocence' after years of penance though. However, that MIB also used this location to try to 'turn' Richard, therefore implicating his serpent role, is not lost on me.
Regarding the Black Rock, it went missing after it left Portsmouth in 1845. The first mate's ledger that was snapped up by Widmore in 'The Constant' was discovered in 1852 among the artifacts of pirates on Ile Sainte-Marie, an island off the coast of Madagascar.
But Richard is on the Canary Islands in 1867 and gets on The Black Rock which crashes into the Island in the same year.
So perhaps the ship seen by Jacob and MIB from the beach was the Black Rock but from an earlier trip (sometime between 1845 and 1852). Because of the calm weather it's first trip could mean that it arrived in one piece and therefore could have left in one piece.
The 1867 voyage with Richard on board is it's second trip to the Island.
I don't know what this would mean but it at least would explain the sudden change in weather.
It also makes me wonder, if this idea is right, then perhaps Hanso was on the original trip. Like Widmore he perhaps was exiled or like Jack left but wanted to return and thus spent the next few years trying to find the Island again?
That would also work for dynamite being invented later as Amy Lynn pointed out. So Hanso might have been making off the record trips to get back?
Or Futureself- you might have found a way out of a mistake for the writers!

I have previously posted about how the EHH episode made me smell peanutbutter. Well, this episode got me the same way. I am just beginning to come out from a profound "feel" of sadness..a funk if you will, i seem to have caught from this "from the beginning of time" episode.
Obvious to me was the confusion,,intentional confusion, of what was Good and what was Evil in this episode. Afterall,,just look at all the different things the label " Devil" or Diablo" was assigned to. Jacob, MIB, Tawaret, Smokie, each got labeled devilishly,,then there was the doctor who refused over money issues,, a priest who refused over time issues,,a ships officer who refused over loss of hope issues,,and even Richard himself, because he couldn't refuse Jacobs offer..point being...Hell..like Life..is what you make it...Alot like the old Locke..we see the simple farmer Ricky,,not quite equipped to understand the play,,or options being offered.Both had a outward reach for salvation.Its in the Inner realm where salvation awaits tho. As MIB put it roughly...we can argue about good and evil all day..but the question remains..Do you want to see your wife again?....do you want to Love again?...Good and Evil are polar opposites....aaah..but to Love...to rise above both the subjective opposites. Ricky didn't get it. It cost him 150 years of subservience to an Illusion, before he was brought to the Insanity of his choice. How tragic..
Definitely another Emmy performance, this time by Nestor..I must say..he really let it all out at times..whooaa!..maybe a bit maudlin in his excess...
Another thing I've noticed since the Sayid episode,,was really obvious in Recon and continued into Ab Aet..its what I call the " Over the shoulder shot". Its really not a " professional " shot or camera angle. Usual camera is on the acting or reacting by who ever is central to the scene. But the " over the shoulder shot" includes a shoulder and back of the head of a character , usually a Lostie,,What does this suggest?..this late in the show?..an Unseen Presence? the man behind the camera..? a Bigger Perspective..? a view of things from yet another character, like some of the scenes seen thru Dharmas security cameras?
Any body else catch another The Who call out? i really want to know.
Overall the writing, producing, directing, acting, editing , music, lighting and photographing(both wonderfully done in this dimly lit episode) made this episode very " tactile" for me, its sorrow felt deeply,,one hell of an episode. I am bouyed tho..that LOST has continued in the exploration of the Illusions we take for Reality and the Insanity they bring us to.

i think the over the shoulder thing is related to what i said about tptb breaking the fourth wall more and more. Time is often referred to as the fourth dimension. Locke remarks about jack losing his fathers body not his father also ties in. His father is the person that filled up the time during his life, not the husk or vessel that he did it in. In contrast the micheal landon scene, offered that this life is only the beginning and to a lesser extent less important to heaven. just like science vs. faith this is religion vs. humanism. I took isabella saying that "they are together" in a more temporal sense. She means like jack's dads body their relation ship isn't contingent on time and space. At least in this timeline they were together. Changing what happened might change richard and issabella's whole relationship, much like sayid and nadia as a couple "are not together" in the sideways, but were in the other timeline. Just as any of us who have lost someone know that, dying doesn't negate the life. Only fools are trapped in time and space. Even if isabella and richard were united, she would grow old and die eventually, so were do you draw the line. Just like widmore was like mib about ben killing alex, he knew ben would have to see her die one day, but that doesn't negate the 16 years they had together.

maven - thx for the link to ODI. Great interview. I hadn't read anything about when they are airing the finale. I thought it was weird they were doing it on a Sunday. But it sounds like they are simulcasting it. Damon said something like 20 million people would be watching at the same time! That is amazing. It makes me even more excited about watching. Can't wait. Maven..just read email about the tickets..Free Tickets was a really bad and insulting idea in the first place..Its really an insult to my 5 years plus " investment " in LOST..So..like, ticket scalpers will be plentiful or 13 year olds will be plentiful..Not very smart on the organizers part AT ALL. I'm not likeing the growing "amateurism" about this whole Lost Party business..We are talkin High RELIGOUS Event here, with this Finale..and to be botchin it,,belittleing it , with free tickets..big mistake only an amateur in over their heads would make. If the Lawyers wouldn't allow it to be charged for..or if they couldn't line up any " guest" appearances..say so up front..before the " sale". Free tickets now allows the organizers to say,," well what did you expect for free." The showing of the Finale has no room for ANY mistakes..period...I suppose if it looks like a bust...I or we can always party in a hotel room and watch it on regular TV...

I just thought today-Jacob wants to know at the end of this episode why MIB wants to kill him, but in the season 5 finale he says he knows how much MIB wants to kill him.

Confused? Ithink that is at the bottom line of Ab Aeterno..It took Richard 150 years of service to an Illusion before he was brought to the Insanity of it. We create our own Hells, our own Devils,,by the insistence of staying within the parameters of good/evil//black/white..polarized true false logical thinking and perceiving.. Escape the box of that seeing..as MIB put it...drop the arguing over good and evil,,and find the Love..Escaping the parameters of Time and Space seems the suggestion.
But MEL- you are using my logical confusion as a logical argument against using logic.
Or I guess what you are saying is that since Lost is illogical it is illogical to use logic to understand it.

That's OK Maven-I can see where you would want to really concentrate on the show for the end. Usually that is how I like to watch too.

Well..i'm booked hotel and flite...Part of me demands the respect of the High Sanctity of the event,,another part says,,,be there to share,,,and still another part says,,I gotta be crazy....I'm going with the crazy. hey,,we'll all be as One ..glued to the screen , no matter where we are sitting.
on Ab Aeterno...I have to say..the photographing and lighting in this episode sticks with me in its accomplishment. The success of the interior shots,,candle lit, dim lighting, high contrast,,really left me impressed. Really good work there. The only thing was..Richards Teeth..In a shot or two..his teeth were the britest things in the scene. This is weird to me. The weirdness is in it seems a subtle motif in season 6..Sawyer seems to be having a emphasis on his lower lip/jaw in his acting in season 6..Hurley too is using that lower jaw/lip bit every now and then,,and Jack almost seems to be showing off his new dental work...Locke,,well heck, hes been able to smile more in season 6..I don't know if its me or what..but acting with their mouths seems somewhat emphasized,,,and I don't know why..maybe its just to see who is paying attention..or an inside joke..anything is possible.

I'm kinda thinking watching the last episode (did I really type that?) is a really personal experience. Sure it will be great to be amongst all that Lost love at the Orpheum, and a Lost audience is very respectful of the moment (like they were on the beach for the premiere). I'm sure every seat in the theater will be able to see the screen somehow (and I'm sure we're all DVRing it anyway), but we really want to see it the best way we can. If we can't get a "good seat", we have some great ones at home.

Yes, TOL, we went to the Premiere on the Beach! It was a great experience. But the finale is just so much more momentous. Sure we can watch it with everyone in crummy seats (way to the side or way up the balcony), and then go home and watch it. But we want to see it for the first time in the best possible way. It is a very personal moment.

Has anyone heard an official explanation for the different dates regarding the Black Rock, more specifically the dates given during the auction of the journal, 1845-1852 vs. the dates given in Ab Aeterno, 1867?
@memphish, no official explanation. My theory is that they were correcting the date, as the earlier date was before dynamite was invented.
I think you're correct AL, I haven't seen it with my own eyes or heard it with my own ears, but I've read that TPTB kind of goofed and made a correction about that which they fessed up about in some recent podcast.

Lostit- I have been posting this all about- Lost won on Hulu yesterday and now is in the final against the Simpsons- but according to the hulu blog, all along Ken from EW magazine has had a 25% choice of total vote added in. So if the 75% of total fan vote is close- he decides.
I tried to figure out what a "veto proof" percentage of fan vote would be, and came up with 68%. So Lost would have to be winning at 68% to overcome if Ken put his vote on the Simpson's. but can anyone check that? I'm not a "math person".
I don't understand the point of this Hulu contest? Does the show win something? Also, if Ken Jensen is allowed to "tip the scales", what was the point of voting at all? (Sorry, I really, really dislike Jensen, and think he's a jerk, and this just makes it worse.)

I also heard the date problem with Black Rock was a "dynamite" fix, too.
AL- it's Ken Tucker at EW. And I had just come to the conclusion that yes, it doesn't show fan preference if 99% of the time the shows advanced because he wanted them to. I think they mention once in the Hulu blog when a show he didn't want was enough ahead to negate his 25%.
So I'm out- not going to be pushed around by Ken over in his EW foot any longer!

I did a bit of voting over at hulu.... but never had any success at tipping the scales. I am glad I learned about the site though, when I have to watch via laptop, it is much smoother on my laptop at Hulu than ABC.com.
However, during Recon- there was one thing I could not make out at all... what is the one lone thing on the path that Sawyer sees? the camera seems to focus on it, but I can't make it out?

Yep, and he is first headed back the sandy path to where the bodies are... it would be off to the right of the path slightly. Maybe I couldn't figure out what it was because it wasn't important! Kept waiting for someone to bring it up... but no one did. Maybe its just debris, but it seemed like there was a pause on it... could be wrong, watched both on the laptop.
I thought he detected motion in the bushes and jerked his head in that direction - but I could be thinking of the wrong time.
Lost2010- could be. On my laptop, there's an ever sooooo slight delay between scene and sound, so what looks like a pause on that piece, could be exactly what you describe.

I'm glad LOST won, but it looks like it was probably Ken Tucker's vote that did it. It was 50/50 when I went to bed last night and now it's 60/40.
So far LOST is beating the Simpsons 2 to 1 (66% for LOST to 34% for the Simpsons).
Just checked tomorrow's Lost runs over 2 minutes.
@SG, yeah, LOST is usually scheduled till 10:02, S5 and S6. No reason to adjust the DVR.

Not every episode runs over 2 minutes and I don't have a dvr. I record to disc. Like you would with a vcr. So I have to manually adjust the time. I don't like to waste space if I don't have to. I know there's at least one other person here who records like I do.

Well maybe they have in your area but they haven't in mine. I try to remember to check every week so I don't cut off the last minute or so.
Actually S3 (or was S4 guys, you all have better memories than me? I know we were always posting it was running over alot that season.) was the worst for running over 2 minutes then 3 then 2 then not at all. I learned my lesson that season to always check. But sometimes I get busy and forget.
Anyway like I said I was only trying to be helpful to the others here.

Interesting question that came up on FB (nonspoiler). The only major characters not to have centrics yet this season are Jin/Sun, Hurley and Des.
Assuming those three happen in the next three weeks (and that's just an assumption, I have no idea, other than tonight's episode), we've got seven hours up in the air. Assuming the finale has no centricity, or an ensemble, what do you think will happen with the other five episodes?
