BTW, Anonymous over at EyeMSick mentioned that perhaps the immunization that the DI was shooting themselves with was for warding off the effects of Smokey, if they ever ran into him. That sounds like an interesting idea to me. If they knew that Smokey could snag you and turn you into Smokey-bots, maybe they developed something to counter that. I have no idea how that would work, but how can you even explain Smokey? :-o

memphish said...

So is the consensus that Smokey changed the Frenchies and Danielle was right to kill them? I'm still not convinced on that point. Robert was in a kill or be killed situation, so his shooting at Danielle wasn't really any different from her shooting him, IMHO.

It's clear to me that Smokey was not pulling a Yemi with the Frenchies since their dead bodies are lying there on the beach. I think if you'd shot Yemi in whatever the name of that last Eko episode was it would have gotten mad and retreated in a Smokey huff like when Jack hurled the TNT down the hole at the end of Season 1, but Yemi would not have been lying dead in the jungle. After all, he was already dead in the Beechcraft. It's also instructive that Montand's body is not on the beach, only those who went after him.

Capcom said...

Yes, that's the one problem that I have with the thought of Smokey pretending to be the Frenchies...that is, how could they be killed if they weren't real, like Yemi? Unless, Smokey took over only their minds somehow, and they were still alive, but not with their own minds. Like pod-people. So then they could still be shot, and would be a threat to Danielle who was still normal, or not a pod-person just yet.

And right, Montand's body would be dead from bleeding to death in the hole most likely, and would not be able to be shot and stacked on the beach like the others.

I agree capcom.

Hi everyone!
Just checking in to say hi! I am in the process of writing up my late, late post at CGLF and it should be posted by tomorrow sometime. It's rather long I'm afraid! (sorry!) There was just so much to talk about in Episode 5!
Thank you all for your kind wishes, thoughts and prayers over the past week! One thing Lost-related that came out of all that ordeal for me...my sister-in-law watches LOST! I was rather giddy when I heard her talk about it...
I couldn't help but think, "oh boy, another fan! and we're related!) *giggle*
You can see I don't get out much huh?! :D

Congrats again to Ded & ML for topping the Leader Board for TLC! They are unbeatable. Hope you feel better soon, ML....it seems lately everyone is getting sick (just as long as it's not "the sickness").

Glad you're getting back in the swing of things, Ellen.

*** Maybe spoilery... read at your own risk ***

So here is my Whackey theory of the week... at some point in the near future the islands magical time rift properties takes jughead and transports it back into the past... where it becomes unstable and explodes destroying the ancient civilization that used to reside on the island.

Also to try and get things straight, in the official lost podcast D&C said that the hole with the wall that the french people descended into was not the temple it self but maybe an outer wall to where the temple exists... which makes sense since a security system would most likely guard the outer edge of the grounds.
Maybe it patrols the area where this wall once stood.

Just some thoughts.

*** End Spoiler warning ***

Boy it's quiet around here at the moment, I guess TPTB giving us lots of answers has stiffled some of the talking points we might otherwise have started.

memphish said...

Hopefully I'll have time to rewatch today and will have something to discuss. I listened to the Official LOST Audio Podcast and it made me mad. Carlton said that he/they didn't really want to tell the Rousseau backstory, yet he insists that people want to know about who Kate will pick. Do you know anyone who wants to know that? No, I bet you do not.

I spent the weekend at my sister's. She's what you'd call a casual LOST watcher. She's watched it from the beginning, but doesn't spend her time commenting on blogs. And she didn't find the Hawking = Farraday's Mom reveal in the least surprising. So those of us who think we've followed to closely to be surprised anymore, nope it's not us, it's the writers and the way they have lit up things with giant klieg lights this season.

Zort70 said...

Memphish, I couldn't really care who Kate picks as long as she makes her mind up !

im 1000% with David on the off-island story being lame. as soon as we seen Hurley run out the door with his stupid sh*t-eating grin, i was like "add 4 more episodes just to get him back..." then we get his airhead phone call from jail. but later we find out he'll be let off? it's become a complete bore and completely contrived and irrational motivations.

Kate playing an over dramatic Elmira from Tiny Toons with a kid who isnt hers.Sun with candy covered guns and it hanging out of her purse.

its dragging and its boring.

Zort70 said...

Feraledge, yes it isn't the most exciting part of the story, once we knew they were going to go back to the island, it became a matter of when rather than how.

Although if we didn't have some indication of how then I think we would all be shouting and saying how did they get back.

I just hope they don't just show Ben throwing his toys out of the pram because his "sheep" won't go in the right direction !

memphish said...

This place has continued to be death.

Get well soon Melissa_Lossa!

Here's a few questions for whoever happens to be around:

1. Are you satisfied with Rousseau's story? If we never see her again in the rest of the show how will you feel about that?

2. If Smokey contact leads to the sickness is anyone else on the Island "sick"? Possible people with Smokey contact -- Jack in episode 1.1 by the cockpit, Locke in 1.4, Eko, Juliet and Kate.

3. Did Locke's actions stop the Island from time skipping? Speculate on what this might mean. E.g., if they stop in 1978 does that mean that our LBs become part of the DI? Of Alpert's Others? If they aren't skipping how will the O6 timeline and the LBs match up?

4. Who are Charlotte's parents?

Gotta get geared up for the new episode tomorrow. It was written by Damon and Carlton. I don't think that's a spoiler, is it?

Tess315 said...

1. I'm absolutely not satisfied with Rousseau's story. I would feel cheated. They said they'd tell her story. I don't think they have yet. The only new thing we saw was Smokey ripped off Montand's arm...really!? and Smokey's place is in the temple. Plus Jin was there. Everything else that happened we already knew.

2. To me Daielle's crew were physically in contact with Smokey. I'm not sure anyone else has been in contact with Smokey that way.

3. Christian said the wheel was off it's axis. To me that means when Locke puts it "right" the island would be in it's right time. Which I beleive is 2004. Matching up times? My guess would be the O6 will travel through a time portal (for lack of a better term)but you know I'm not sure what time the island will be in when they get there 2004 or 2007/08 my guess is 2004. But I could be wrong. Just my thoughts.

4. I haven't got a clue who Charlotte's parents are. :)

I hope we get the answer to #3 at least tomorrow night. Good qestions.

Joseph Finchum said...

Wow am I at the top of the list. I havn't been paying too close attention.I saw it two weeks ago and I was in a ok position, but I don't even know what I am ranked... lol maybe that is a good thing.

I still think that maybe when Desmond turned the failsafe key and imploded the hatch that maybe Jughead went back in time and exploded, destroying the ansient people who lived on the island... maybe the ones who survived were the ones that were in the temple.

maven said...

1. I'm not quite satisfied....would like to see the birth of Alex and how Ben actually got her. But, I guess we can be thankful for what we did get.

2. Maybe the "sickness" with Smokey occurs when you are taken into his lure underground. Locke didn't make it all the way down.

3. If just putting the wheel back on is axis is all it takes to stop the skipping, why would the O6 have to come back. Somehow, they might have something to do with getting the island in the right time.

4. I can go two ways with Charlotte's parents: Horace and Olivia Goodspeed or Ben and Annie.

Happy Lost Eve!

blueheron13 said...

Memphish,

1. I would feel moderately cheated if we never saw Alex getting kidnapped and Danielle creating her transmission in the radio tower.

2. If the "sickness" means becoming a person who "protects" the island at all costs, then I would speculate that Locke might have it, maybe Ben, maybe all of the Others.

3. I don't want to speculate about time skips due to knowledge of some spoilers.

4. I have absolutely no idea who Charlotte's parents are or if that will even end up being important.

We missed you Ellen.

Tess315 said...

You're right. I should be so bitter over Danielle. :)

memphish said...

That's why I asked. I've been debating the Danielle situation all day today. And after listening to Carlton on the OLP I got really mad about it. I'm glad for what we got, and I don't really need to see Ben take Alex. I think one line of exposition can cover that. I took her because her mom was nuts and she would have died otherwise or some such thing will work for me.

My biggest gripe is how they dealt with the sickness. The sickness has come up since early in Season 1 and they brought it back up when Aaron got sick, and for all we know everyone on the Island has the sickness. I heard a caller on The Transmission talk about how Danielle in S1 said she killed her team before they were rescued like the sickness would hurt the outside world. So has that happened with the O6? Yet all we got was a tiny scene with dead guys and a shootout showdown that was ambiguous.

memphish said...

Total "Oh crap!" moment just now as I was looking back at the transcript for Solitary to talk about the sickness.

Danielle is holding Sayid captive and they have this conversation:

DANIELLE: So, you heard my transmission -- came looking for me, for answers?
SAYID: I didn't know you were alive.
DANIELLE: Still lying.
SAYID: I'm not lying.
DANIELLE: Lies! Nothing about this plane crash which you survived. You claim there were others?
SAYID: More than 40.
DANIELLE: Then why are you alone?
SAYID: I left them.
DANIELLE: Why?
SAYID: There was -- I did something, something I'm ashamed of.
DANIELLE: But Nadia, you left her too?
SAYID: She wasn't on the plane. She's dead -- because of me.

SHE'S DEAD--BECAUSE OF ME!!!!!!!!!

Is this proof of a time loop?

Tess315 said...

That should say shouldn't be bitter...

Tess315 said...

I just thought Sayid assumed Nadia was dead because he doesn't know for sure if she got away when he shot himself in the leg to help her escape.

Tess315 said...

Ok, It takes me awhile to follow people's thinking, sorry.
You mean when she was killed in LA after they go back.

memphish said...

That's the way I'd prefer to read it Sayid's Girl. It never made sense to me in the first instance. In fact, I'm sure I've got a post on it somewhere on my blog. :-) Because in that flashback which is right before Sayid gets on the plane, he knows Nadia is alive in LA. Unless this is after the O6 returns.

Tess315 said...

That is interesting. I don't know if it's proof of a time loop or maybe proof of Sayid being in the future. Hmmm

maven said...

Interesting idea, Memphish. Maybe he just said she's dead to her family since she had to flee Iraq. He helped her escape. I just don't know at this point.

Ellen said...

Memphish - very good catch! I have been thinking for a while now (since beginning of S4) that the entire story is a loop and that the final scene will be Jack's eye as he lay in the bamboo looking up at the sky when the plane crashed.
Wouldn't that be a hoot?!
Also - I ran across this post from one of the yahoo groups I belong to:
"I had this crazy thought since I got on this Pharaoh bandwagon....
I now think Jack's great grandpappy is Jacob! It is a royal family gathering with Claire, Aaron, Christian, Jack, which leaves Christian's father. This would make sense why Aaron would be significant.
In certain cultures, the males receive the royal lineage so if Jack does not accept his destiny - it passes to Aaron. I mentioned Christian being a High Priest of sorts to Jacob, so who would replace him if not Jack (if we
play this as royality rules (keep it in the family)). We never learned the connection of Jack's dad to the island or how he got to the position he is in. If this was a utopian society, I'd think it was a family situation or Jack's
father just got LUCKY to be considered in such a high position. Remember Christian said Aaron is where he is SUPPOSED to be - as well as Claire mentioning
she is where she is supposed to be (with her Dad). This now leaves Aaron and Jack as the remaining family members.
But Ben had this comment from 'Men and Mice' about needing someone to love which related to Sawyer's feeling to Kate (as well as Jack's feelings to Kate). Jack needs Kate (and we find Kate really loves Jack when she tells him on
Penny's boat - "I've always been with you."). So Kate has a purpose
which now relates to caring and protecting Aaron while Jack learns about becoming the next Pharaoh (or whatever))."

From: LOST_ABCTV group at Yahoo Groups

I really like this theory...it would certainly seem to fit (JMHO.) What do you guys think?
xxoo

memphish said...

I like all but the Kate stuff. Kate is so on my nerves these day, or rather the way the writers have changed Kate from Season 1 to the typical damsel in distress.

It would also make that mobisode with the watch make even more sense because Jack's grandfather is mentioned in that.

So do you think it's Hurley saying the numbers on the transmission the Frenchies are following?

Melissa_Lossa said...

Oh, and thanks for all of the well wishes, everyone! You guys are so sweet. :)

bigdog said...

memphish did you just listen to that again? did you think it was Hurley voice?

memphish said...

Bigdog, I've heard it on a couple of podcasts. There's one time in particular when it says 23 that I think it does sound like Hurley. The idea that Hurley records the numbers and then is haunted by the numbers is definitely an intriguing one.

maven said...

My first thoughts were that it was Hurley saying the numbers. But I can't wrap my mind around as to why that would be, and how that would work into the story/time-loops.

Glad you're feeling better, ML. Hopefully, Dennis will be back to make a new post since Fringe is on such a long hiatus now!

Happy Lost Day! Wednesdays are so much fun now!

bigdog said...

Agreed it is very intriguing, but like Maven said i just couldnt figure out why it would be Hurley.

that is the thing about the show sometimes the littlest things create the questions. at this point everything they put on the air i feel could be a red herring.

Zort70 said...

Hurley saying the numbers is kind of a neat fit into the whole time loop theory.

Although given his past reaction to the lottery being the worst thing that ever happened it might not be something he would want to do, unless he saw a future where he didn't record the numbers and things were a lot lot worse. i.e. something similar to It's a wonderful Life or a Christmas Carol.

Zort70 said...

Have a great time tonight watching the show, I'll be back on Sunday after it airs in the UK

memphish said...

I know a lot of people think Charlotte might be Ben and Annie's daughter, but I don't think so. Wouldn't Charlotte have recognized Ben as her father? She seems to have a clear memory of her father when she's babbling before death. And while I've always wanted her to be a Goodspeed that doesn't make the most sense either since Olivia wasn't British. Then again Dan doesn't have a British accent and his mother does.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Whew! I finally finished reading all the comments that I've missed out on since last week. Now I'm jazzed and ready for tonight!

On tvguide.com, they have a video series called "Getting Lost." They're kind of silly, but this week's has a great quote from Michael Emerson about getting the O6 back together (no spoiler): "it's like trying to keep cats in a bag - you get one in and another pops back out!"

Tess315 said...

Here's my wacky theory for today.
I've said this before but I just want to throw it out there again since it appears Jack may be going back to the island tonight.

After watching the many promos before the season started I began to think that Locke was never meant to be the leader of the island. That it was suppose to be Jack. That somehow Richard made a mistake. Since Jack is a form of the name John.

This got me thinking about Jacob and if that could be a form of the name Jack. In my search I found out that it is.

"Jack is sometimes thought of as an English form of Jacques, the French form of Jacob, the English form of a Hebrew name meaning Supplanter."

Jack was a very common nickname for John (as well as, more rarely, for Jacob)

Presumably Jacob is the current ruler of the island. If the next ruler is a Jacob also it could be Jack.

I don't know. I told you it was wacky. But I just get the feeling that Jack is the leader of the island not Locke.

memphish said...

I agree Sayid's Girl that I don't think Locke is the leader. He's just to gullible. Although Locke does somewhat fit the mold of the Biblical Jacob, manipulated by his Mother, tricked by his father-in-law, befuddled by his wives, misled by his own sons, but ultimately a true believer. I have a hard time seeing Jack as Jacob 'cause Jack's such a loser right now, and why wouldn't he put himself on his list, assuming Ben didn't lie about the list. Yeah right.

Tess315 said...

You're right Jack isn't a born leader. And probably isn't Jacob. I'm not sure. But he may be the next Jacob. Jacob the 2nd,3rd or whatever.
I'm not sure about the list.

maven said...

I don't know what I would do if weather interrupted my LOST night! Poor Ellen! :(

I am also beginning to think that Locke is not the chosen one...he has to be told everything...what to do, where to go, etc.

Scoutpost said...

Happy LOST day to all!

memphish- that is a good catch on Sayid. I think that in the end there is going to be time looping, but just don't really know how to account for it all yet.

I read something over on Erika's longliveLocke blog that gave me this thought: she pointed out the fact that Danielles team had musical instruments with them. Other people have said that maybe to get to the island you have to have a dead body- i.e. Christian and Locke. So I am wondering if there is some island type world saving task that has to be carried out and until it is done, certain characters keep cycling around in time (like reincarnation) until it's done right/carried out. Then, every time a group comes to the island there will be a Jack prototype, a Locke prototype, a Charlie, a dead body, etc. Don't know, just when the instrument idea clicked with me I began to wonder.

Tess315 said...

Stay safe Ellen. Sorry to hear you might miss Lost tonight.
We're getting bad weather again too. Not as bad as yours though.
I told my husband this morning it must be Wednesday we're getting bad weather tonight. First it was ice and snow then we got the high winds last week the lights flickered but the power stayed on. We're supposed to get thunderstorms hail and high winds tonight. And like you memphish back to cold weather.

Hi All,
Just a lurker question here that I have not seen anywhere.
In This Place is Death why did Danielle say “si” instead of “oui” when she and Robert were talking about the sex of the baby? They are speaking French Right? Hmmm…
I even checked the transcript over at lostpedia.

maven said...

Lukergirl: If I'm remembering correctly, she might have said "SHE". I remember seeing the translation on screen as "ELLE" (French for her) because Danielle was sure her baby was a girl and it wouldn't be an Alexander, but an Alexandra.

Anonymous said...

Maven,
Thanks but what I was talking about happens right after that exchange. Here is that part of the transcript.

ROBERT: Elle ? [Subtitle: She?]

ROUSSEAU: Elle ! [Subtitle: She!]

ROBERT: Arrête ! Combien de fois on va remettre ça ? Alexandre, c'est un garçon. [Subtitle: How many times do we have to do this? Alexander is a boy.]

ROUSSEAU: Alexandra. Ca va être une fille. [Subtitle: Alexandra. It's going to be a girl.]

ROBERT: Unh-unh.

ROUSSEAU: Si.

ROBERT: On se repose un moment ? [Subtitle: Why don't we rest here for a moment?]

ROUSSEAU: Ouais. [Subtitle: Yeah.]

ROBERT: Je vais te chercher de l'eau. [Subtitle: I'll get you some water.]

Ellen said...

lurkergirl- I noticed that too, but chalked it up to an oops in the dialog. Maybe they just wanted to see if we were paying attention?! :D

That would mean Charlotte was on the island before the D.I. wouldn't it? Unless the well was there during the time of the D.I. too.

Well, anyone who's watching right now...anything interesting? My local ABC affiliate is of course following the weather. Black Swan said...

Yes, twinkle... Ben sounded very sincere! I think every mom knows and recognizes those feelings! (and yes, I've pulled the car over.. lol)

I was wondering that, too, sayid'sgirl.. but not necessarily before the DI, but before the Orchid was built maybe?

It says they have flashed to a time before the well was dug. Before this they said the well was dug well before DI. But the chamber is more ancient still because it said they have no access to the "ancient chamber."
