Sorry this took so long to get up, David - I forgot to check my e-mail yesterday!

I'm so excited about the fantasy league. :) Once again, Daniel does me proud!

Tess315 said...

I almost picked Daniel and changed my mind and went with Jin. Don't ask me why. Loyalty I guess. I thought about Claire too.

Great line from the Doc Arzt article: "And one more thing: If Latin is a Dead Language, why can’t Miles understand it?"

So far, Penny has been just about my only good pick. I guess Locke isn't doing terrible although he undoes most of his positives with hurting people.

Apparently, I took Vincent instead of Daniel. . . and he got lost when Sawyer sent them to the creek I guess.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Last year, I went with my heart, picking all of my favorite characters, and I got hosed. This year, I tried to go with the smarter picks.

Although I rose up the LFL this week, I still regret picking Jin and Tom, all the others I picked have done well.

I guess if you sit down and look at the characters and how the points are given and taken away.
Then you can chose a good team like Ded and Melissa! :)
But I go with my heart too. And I'll always pick Sayid no matter how many people he kills. :)

Remember it's early days yet. I have high hopes that Christian Shephard won't let me down in the long run.

On another Lost is taking over my life moment. I was listening to All Things Considered last night and a Jack Shephard had emailed NPR about a story they'd run last week on Felix Mendelssohn's 200th birthday. Maybe our Jack will play some Mendelssohn on the piano this season.

lost2010 said...

This LFL stuff sort of skews your opinions on Lost - never before have I found myself hoping that Penny and Kate would get more screen time. LOL

Tess315 said...

LOL Well I like Penny but Kate....

memphish said...

Listening to the podcast and I completely disagree with David's idea about Theresa and Daniel's relationship based on the way Abigail, Theresa's actual sister discusses Faraday and the fact that the janitor calls her that poor girl, not his poor sister. Nor do I think Widmore and Ellie are "original" Island people. I think they've been brought there in the 1950s either in a recruitment plan like Juliet or in a crash scenario like Danielle's people or 815.

Zort70 said...

Talking of Abigail, I wish US TV series would sometimes update their views on British accents. We don't all speak like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins !

Sorry for the rant but it does annoy me sometimes and Abigails accent was one of those times.

Capcom said...

Sorry that you've been sick Fenris! Glad to see you resurfacing here for S-5 tho. Thanks for the corrected info about Latin too. :-)

LOL Lost2010 about the screen time. Pen's OK, at least she's not as selfish as Kate.

Thanks for the links today guys.

LOL Zort! You mean you all aren't chimney-sweeps? :o) I guess it's either like Bert or the Beatles, in Hollywood.

Is Penny's accent British?

The deal about the US Army knife (as in the Fishbiscuit/Arzt article) being a big signal makes me chuckle. I have no doubt that TPTB used it like that, but it's funny to me because from the late 50's to 80's there were genuine Army Surplus shops in almost every sizable town in the US and many people bought cheap camping supplies and other outdoor/maintenance gear from there. So almost everyone (or at least everyone's Dad) had a bunch of Army surplus junk around the garage. Especially if they had been in the service. So the Army knife didn't strike me as a big signal when it happened and I kind of thought, "So?" when AnaL made a big deal about it to Goodwin. :o)

maven said...

Memphish: I don't know what Ellie and Widmore would have been recruited to in the 1950's. The DI was not in existence then. I don't think any planned research community was on the island then. The possibility of accidentally landing there is possible, but I don't know how widespread plane travel was in the late 40's/early 50's which would end with a crash situation. With the strange, ageless Richard Alpert in charge of this 1950's group, and with them using all the leftover Army tents and clothes and weapons, I'm leaning toward a Original Inhabitant scenario. Their insistence that it is THEIR island...not their research facility, leans me in that direction. Some have speculated that they might even be decedents of the Black Rock. Or of the people who created the 4-toed statue and created the ruins we have seen.

Capcom said...

That is the big question here isn't it: who was this motley outdoor camping Group that was protecting the island around the 1950s????? :-o

And did they not have any tents of their own before the Army came around and they nicked their tents??

Unknown said...

Guys, don't forget: Richard is not now, nor ever was, DHARMA. Widmore and Ellie would have been recruited the same way Juliet was: a front organization calling on specific skills or interests. In that era, it was probably paramilitary recruiting.

Capcom said...

I didn't forget, that's why I asked the Q above. :-)

Re: Fishbiscuit's post, why do we have to assume that Dan used Teresa in a selfish and aggressive manner to his own ends and then dumped her? That's her sister's viewpoint surely. But Widmore could have had him in a bind as to moving on to continue to find answers for him. Dan could have even agreed only if Wid took care of Teresa. And we don't know yet if she was was a voluntary assistant, a helpful girlfriend, or what. I'm not willing to throw Dan out on an assumtion like that just yet.

Unknown said...

Naw, my reminder was directed more at maven, and at J. Wood who also made the same apparent mistake.

maven said...

I also speculated as to why we see Richard Alpert wearing tattered clothes and longer hair in the scene with young Ben after he ran from the DI looking for his mother. It was in the 1950's when they got all that new stuff from the Army guys (including the tents and clothes and weapons). Previous to that, they were on their own as to housing and clothes. So they get these shiny new things and wear them to death for over 20 years until the DI people get there. That's why they are ragged again. Clothes don't hold up too well in a jungle environment. After the Purge, they've got new stuff again.

maven said...

Kyle: I don't think I implied that Richard was ever Dharma. And I don't think that there was ever any other group recruiting people to the island prior to Dharma. I believe Ellie and Widmore were born there.

Unknown said...

I gotcha, maven. I think you left out the middle part. You don't think that Richard sought new members from the outside world? Why would he have bought Locke's "come up and see me some time" invitation, if he wasn't already equipped to do so?

I also think Widmore would have been a much better team member if he'd been born onto the team. I got more "desperate possessiveness" out of his questioning of Sawyer ("what are you doing on our island??") than "righteous ownership."

maven said...

Kyle: I just don't know what the sales pitch would have been: Come with me and live on this island? 1950's Richard looked perplexed when Locke was talking about time travel and was skeptical about him being their future leader (until the compass was played). So I don't think the lure of coming to the island was: If you come with me, we'll go time-tripping. Maybe he could pitch the healing properties of the island. I'm just not sure what 1950's Richard and his group knew about the island. I guess he might have known something since he never aged.

And young Widmore might just be a hothead...there's one in every group! LOL His personality probably was beneficial in acquiring his empire.

Capcom said...

LOL Maven, yes, there is always at least one hothead or psycho in every tribe!

lost2010 said...

Well, recruiting could have been sort of portrayed to be part of the 'war effort'. . .like Oak Ridge. . .I had family members there that had no idea what they were working on until 20 years later. . . and once they get you there, what can you really do. . .

blueheron13 said...

This conversation reminds me, we still don't know how Anthony Cooper ended up on the island, do we?

memphish said...

Kyle mostly covered this, but I think old Richard Alpert had to have other people to be part of his merry band of Others, and you can't have thousands of years of inbreeding to accomplish that well. I think Richard has been recruiting people to the Island for at least decades in some Mittelos Bioscience way. For example, perhaps during the Great Depression he recruited dust bowl families. During the Irish Potato Famine he recruited others. I guess I should look for some British migration in the 1930s (Ellie/Widmore parents) or 1950s to see if I could more accurately predict where they came from, but I'm willing to wait and let the show tell me.

My most basic point is that Ellie and Widmore are not like Richard. Assuming Richard is a "native" or "original inhabitant" then Ellie and Widmore are not though they may have been born on the Island. But their ability to age (assuming Ellie = Mrs. Hawking) precludes them from being like Richard. I'm getting all picky about word choice, but what it comes down to is Widmore and Richard did not come from the some place and/or are not the same type of being.

Capcom said...

Do you still have relatives in Oak Ridge Lost2010? That's just "down the road" from where I live. Anyway, I really want to learn more about it and take some tours before they start tearing down the Secret City stuff and plants. It's a fascinating story.

Back on topic, LOL Memphish, you make Richard sound like Scientology, recruiting at disasters. :-)

memphish said...

Well there have been numerous clues that the Others are scientologists Capcom. Especially given that Tom Cruise's cousin is One Of Them. :-)

lost2010 said...

Right. Original Recipe Others like Richard. . .and then Recruited Others like Juliet. And then you'd have a subcategory of Recruited Others which would be Special Others - who were born on the island but to Recruited parents.

Although, we don't know I don't guess whether Richard is the only Original Recipe Other that's left. Or whether he was maybe the only one of his kind somehow. . .

memphish said...

I think Richard is the only one of his kind and that's why he can't be leader. The leader has to be like his people or else the people are slaves or something like that.

maven said...

Yes, I, too, think that Richard is a special breed apart from the Other others. And people would have had to been "recruited" or directed to the island to keep the gene pool from creating imbeciles! We still don't know the original purpose of the island and where Richard came from. But he could be working with people in the real world to send the right sort of people to the island (maybe they made a mistake with that hothead Widmore).

Oh yeah, right, Ethan! X-D

I think some people (maybe not here) are still confusing Dharma with Ben's group. Mainly because I think that's what Ben wanted the Losties to think that his people were left over Dharma. That's why last season I was calling Richard's people from when Ben was a boy Other others. Or in my opinion "original/hostiles" others.
Richard I think maybe the only original inhabitant left. Or his agelessness may be due to time travel. But Juliet did say he was "old" and has always been there.
maven said:

I agree with this possiblity. He does pop on and off the island and we don't know exactly who he is or where he came from. Even though my opinion is he is an original inhabitant.

Fenris said...

Capcom - Thanks. I seem to be getting gradually better at least. It also meant I wasn't at work so could write all that stuff earlier instead.

I think there is definitely a significance in the use of Vulgar Latin. Also I was pleased something came up that I actually knew something about! Of course as I said at the end of the last thread it could just be there way of showing us that they have been using Latin for a long time and learned it orally rather then through a book. It doesn't mean for a fact that they got on the island from a period and place it was the common tounge.

Still that fits for me. I also think that most of the Others don't realize why they use Latin and like Juliet believe it's because it's the language of the "enlightened".

So anyway, has that Swan Bomb thing (I posted previously) been discussed already? I thought that was quite a co-incidence.

Capcom said...

Yes, the Swan bomb thing is very coincidental Fenris! I was amazed when it came up. :-D

Melissa_Lossa said...

So here's something I just thought of while reading your discussion. We've assumed that Richard et al commandeered the army's clothes, tents, etc because they didn't have their own. But we know that in 1956, Richard travels to the mainland to see John as a baby. I find it hard to believe that they acquired the ability to travel back and forth in that two year window 1954 - 56. So if they can get off the island, why not get their own tents?

lost2010 said...

I just assumed that was to deceive any Army folk who showed up. At least on first glance, the new army folk might assume that was the base set up by the first group and walk right into the trap. . .but assuming always gets me in trouble.

It just seemed to me that 1950's Richard didn't seem to know about time-travel and Locke. And I agree, ML, that there's a lot of stuff to learn about the island between 1954 and 1956 to see Locke being born.

There are just too many unanswered questions and a lot of information lacking which are creating too many holes still. Hopefully, they will be filled shortly!

Tess315 said...

Personlly I thought maybe the commandeered the tents and uniforms to infiltrate any other US troops that may come there. But not because they didn't have their own lodgings or clothing.
We don't know that the ability to travel back and forth from the island had been comprimised at this time. The Army found it and don't think it was because they knew the right coordinates.
Maybe the incident is what caused that.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I also thought it was interesting that Richard gave the soldiers the chance to leave peacefully - the opposite of Ben, who was determined to keep everyone on the island.

memphish said...

I agree that the tents and uniforms was the Others using their "disguises." They assume that the Army will send more people to find the bomb.

As for Richard's ability to leave the Island, he has it in 1954, but he tells Locke that it's "very privileged information."

Tess315 said...

Do you think Richard allowed Dharma to leave peacefully also?
And of course they wouldn't either. Then he was "forced" to kill them all too, with the help of Ben.
I'm not sure when the problem of getting to and getting off the island started?
Do you think it started after Ben took over?

memphish said...

I'm thinking that the Others are going to do something to protect the Island's discoverability in 1954 to prevent the Army from coming back, and that some device has been in place at least since then. At a minimum I think the DI had "cloaked" the place (I still want that to be part of the purpose of The Tempest) and that's why they needed The Looking Glass and the submarine.

Fenris said...

Yes, Richard is a much more reasonable and peaceful leader then Ben or Widmore (if his comment about everything Ben had being taken from him meant he was the leader at one point). It seems strange how he could loose his apparent leadership (we don't know for sure he was the actual big boss or 2nd after Jacob at this point or any other).

I guess the mob prefers a rabble rouser. Maybe his role is like that of a Shaman. Taking care of the Others and the Islands spiritual side. Perhaps they have specific roles. They had a Sheriff after all for internal disputes.

Okay so here is something else.

Widmore was on the island back in 1954, Ben turned up as a child in the 70's and the Purge happened in 1992 (where he seems to be in control of the Others). Widmore has been looking for the island for about 20 years.

So that would mean Ben took over control of the Others and got rid of Widmore in the 80's? When he was a teenager and before the Purge came around?

The "Incident" seems to have been either just before 1980 or in 1984 (if it is the AH/MDG incident on the Blast Door Map). Now the incident may have moved the island or it could be Widmore simply didn't know where it was in the first place. Either way it would suggest Dharma still new where the island was after Widmore had left. Perhaps that was part of the reason for the purge?

The other thing is Widmore is the boss of this huge company by the 90s and insanely rich. They have compared the Others funds with Widmores. So perhaps Widmore was already an Other company and he just remained in control after leaving the island taking it's funds for himself. That would suggest they had to have moved the island because if he had ties to a company you'd think must have gotten off the island at some point and known where it was to return.

Then again I'm speculating on the fringes of what we know now. So I'll stop.

Interestingly I can't find any ties between Widmore and the Hanso Foundation outside of Bad Twin, which I don't think we can consider cannon and perhaps a few DJ Dan rants.

Oh yeah checking Widmore on lostpedia reminded me that Henry Gales baloon had the logo on. Seems they were almost certainly looking for the island then. That must have been obvious for a while but I totally forgot about it.

Unknown said...

Now that's a run-down. Thank you for crystallizing all the dates we've had bouncing around here. Get so caught up in details that I for one forget to just plot out the timeline.

memphish said...

I've plotted it out as best I could on my website if anyone is interested. I dispute Fenris' Purge date though because I don't think the Others raised Alex until age 4 then Ben took over, but if you believe dream Horace, then they did.

Fenris said...

Yeah, I think keeping some kind of time line in mind with it all is more important then ever now as stuff will be happing all over the place.

There is a timeline on Lostpedia (which I didn't think to look for until after looking up each individual thing damn it!) although it has literally everything on it. I may copy the dates, trim it down a bit (keep it more centred on the island) and use it as a guide from now on. I think I may need it.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Ah, DJ Dan! How I miss him. :)

Isn't the copyright date on the Swan orientation film earlier than 1984? If so, then the incident would be earlier than that.

Remember that Ben tells Locke and Hurley that the Purge was not his idea, so he may not have been in charge quite yet.

Fenris said...

To be honest I wasn't sure where LP got the date from. So I am glad you mentioned Horrace. Hmm, it seems that is the only thing to place the date as they have it. But I don't know why he would lie either.

It makes a big difference too. I think I will trust the Ghost until I have reason not to. After all I am trusting the blast door map about the AH/MDG incident and Miles estimation on how long Widmore has been looking for the island. Truth is there is very little we know for fact. But it's worth always remembering that too I think!

Fenris said...

Yeah, there is the "Incident" that caused the Swan station to change roles, which must have been before the date of the film. The film is copyright 1980. Although that may have just been that it can't be before 1980 and not give it a latest date it could be. If the Swan film was amended and the initial one was copyright 1980 perhaps they would keep the 1980 copyright. I don't know enough about it to say.

Anyway, there is also the AH/MDG incident as written on the blast door map. Of course that doesn't make it THE incident, but either incident could be important (or both for that matter!)

Or it could be just the blast door map is highly innacurate. I for one have never believed the flame to be station number 4 (something that seems to have only come from the Blast Door). Doesn't make sense seeing as it isn't a research station and the Hydra seemingly is (which doesn't seem to have a designation).

Fenris said...

Oh yeah, also when Locke couldn't bring himself to shoot. Although he said it was because he was one of his people, was it really because it was Widmore and shooting him would be against the rules of time travel? Did we see it in motion just there?

(yeah I am re-watching it right now).

Tess315 said...

Yeah keeping track of where they jump to in time and what's going on then will probably be helpful.
I started keeping track after the first 2 episodes so I could keep i straight in my head.

2costa said...

three points. As far as widmore wearing jones name but cunningham wearing his own name. The others are known to recruit from all sources, so best i can figure. Widmore and Ellie got stranded on the island before the u.s. military and cuningham was recruited from the latest wave of island interlopers(people who put jug head there), sort of like the old school version of cindy. Cunningham being a newer recruit may explain why charles was so quick to kill him, i almost think widdy just wanted to kill cunningham for the hell of it. I tend to think charles and ellie may be brother and sister, by the way he said "ellie".

second point has anyone given any serious consideration that jughead may be a cryogenic bomb, perhaps even how they froze the donkey wheel?

Third point do you think maybe the tower holding jughead may have later become the radio tower?

memphish said...

Why do you think Cunningham is wearing his own name? I don't think anyone addresses him do they 2Costa?

Unknown said...

Considering the tower and bomb were gone when the flash brought them back forward, I'll say it's unlikely and ultimately unimportant that the bomb rig became the radio tower.

Who's "they"? Who froze the donkey wheel?

Capcom said...

Everything sounds great peeps!

The Flame was for communications, and did seem to have connecting tunnels. So even if it was not for research, communications are important. Having said that, I'm not clear on the station locations. I wish that TPTB would give us another map to go by that shows at least all the stations that we have up to now. It's only fair and right that they should. :o)

Capcom said... Is Penny's accent British?

Yes Penny's accent is British, but is more like a normal South East England one.

I was thinking last night that with all this time travel that is going on which events that we have already seen could have been the future losties interacting with the losties of the earlier episodes.

Could the scene in The Hunting Party, where Jack, Locke, Sawyer, etc are going after Michael and Zeke / Tom confronts them and says "Light 'em up", be the future losties in the trees lighting the torches !

By the way thoughts go out to all those affected by the weather at the moment, we in the UK have had a tiny proportion of the snow and ice that others have had and it has closed loads of roads / schools etc.

Thanks Zort
Thoughts to you in the UK as well. I seen on the news you guys got 8 inches of snow and alot of businesses were closed.

Zort70 said...

Yes a few parts of the country got 8 inches, it was so bad in London all the public transport was stopped for a day.

Up where I am (north of Birmingham) it was a bit less severe, but it didn't help last night when our heating boiler broke down.

Fenris said...

It makes me laugh how much our entire country fell apart after a few inches of snow. Hilariously pathetic.

Compared to what they'd have elsewhere in europe and in places in America it was nothing really. Hah. They were saying on the news about it stopping the london busses, something even the Luftwaffe didn't manage. Of course the trains stopped dead after the first snowflake fell on a rail. Our poor fragile little trains.

I think we must spend so much time complaining about the weather we forget to prepare for it. Lol.

Happy Lost Day!!

Hey, does anyone know a good place to find a longer description of tonight's episode, in case I have to make the post again? Last week, when I realized Dennis was AWOL a few minutes into the episode, I couldn't find anything quickly. Then I panicked, and that's why we got Jughead, in 25 words or less - all I could find was the one sentence on ABC. :)

This week, I want to be prepared!

I've been trying to avoid the description and the title this week. I almost made it til Ellen spoiled me at FB. lol
Not a biggie I just don't like know anything ahead of time except the preview after the show.

Fenris said...

Capcom - Totally with you on the desire for a new Blast Door Map.

With the time travelling on the island I have a feeling we will get a lot more Dharma info before much longer. Would be nice to have something more official then two isolated peoples part-crazed scrawlings on a wall. Plus of course a lot of that map was for the sake of the Lost Experience so may not be that relative anymore.

Still, there remains some unanswered questions from the BDM. Like the AH/MDG incident on 1984. The writers I believe confirmed AH was Alvar Hanso. Will we therefore meet Alvar in the flesh and find out who or what MDG is?

Anyway, true the flame was a very important station. But still, the way I look at it is this:

we have 6 research station: The Staff, The Arrow, The Swan (formerly a research station anyway), The Pearl, The Orchid and the Hydra. We don't have station numbers for the Staff and The Hydra. But 6 is the key number.

Then we have The Flame (Communications), The Looking Glass (Sub guidance and secondary communications) and The Tempest (Toxic Gas storage). Along with the Door, which is probably "abbandoned number 7", though it's the first time I've heard of building a structure starting with the door. Lol.

I can imagine the discussion on that:

Dharma Foreman - "You built one extra door!

Dharma Worker - "Sorry boss, I got kinda carried away. You know how much I love making these things!"

Dharma Foreman - "Okay. Well, label it up as something, mark it as top secret and then shove it onto a rock somewhere. No one will notice."

Anyway, point is the Looking Glass and the Flame seem similar to me, so why give The Flame a number. Of course the numbers could just be for the first 6 stations built and perhaps the Looking Glass was number designated station too. There are a lot of possibilities I guess. But I feel the six research stations got numbered and the rest just got a name designation.

Although if there is still an undiscovered meteorological research station that throws the theory completely off. *shrug*

Anyway, on a side note: It's interesting that the Arrow seems to be a very early established station. It suggests they came to the island already aware of the hostiles, rather then getting there and then having them turn up and disrupt things.

Also our friend Horrace had an Arrow outfit. He was a Mathematician apparently. How does that figure? Was he really a military Logistics man? Ironic (or suspicious) that someone working for the station that is supposed to defend against the Others, is the one to bring the man that eventually brings the Others to victory over Dharma to the Island.

Whoopsie! (or cunning plan?)

Melissa_Lossa said...

I wonder if the numbered stations were just for the "research" stations that required orientation films. The Looking Glass and The Flame seem like they could be "need-to-know-basis" kind of places. If you were a researcher who came to the island, you'd know about the places where they do the research, but not neccessarily about the underwater "portal" or the toxic gas factory.

And thanks for the suggestions, Kyle and Sayid's Girl - both places have the same two-line description. How does Dennis do it?! ;)

memphish said...

So is anyone planning to watch the enhanced episode tonight and report any new otherwise unrevealed bits of information they may give us? Yep, I'm still ticked about Eloise.

Sayid'sgirl...so sorry!!! I didn't realize epi titles were spoilers...I'll try to be more careful on FB. I don't put them on my blog until the epi airs, but didn't think about Facebook...:(
xxoo

Melissa_Lossa said...

Ooh, thanks, memphish - I'll have to listen in to NPR this afternoon, then. If anyone wants to listen online, you can do so at wgvu.org - shameless plug! ;)

And good point about the front page! Finding a decent photo is easier, so I'll just worry about that.

I'll be watching tonight at 8, although I'll have to pay more attention than I did last week - I completely missed the Eloise reference!

Don't worry,it's what's on the inside that counts.

Hi All!

I'm with you Sayidsgirl about hopes of you that might be a younger version of. Eee!

Thanks Zort! Sometimes Charles sounds British and sometimes Ozzie, so I was not sure what we were supposed to think about Penny. :-o

Great comments again Fenris. And I'd even settle for someone whipping out a crumpled map for a quick look at the locations of the stations so we could study the blurry screencap later! Or, TPTB could have the courtesy to print one out in the Lost magazine for us, heheh. I like your idea for the numbering of ths stations too. And good quesitonsabout how math fits into defense at the Arrow. Of course it can, but how does it in the story?

I'm starting to think of the Hostiles in the same vein as the natives of Bikini Atoll. The US went in and moved the unsuspecting peaceful peoples to another island so the experiments could be done. So perhaps when the Army, Dharma, etc. went in and asked the natives of Lost Island to move, they said no way, and the eternal fight for the island began.

I've always hoped that MDG meant Mittlewerk Dharma Group. As in a confrontation between AH and MDG that resulted in AH's confinement. But I seriously doubt that it will be that.

Haha Kyle, about TV guide being hamfisted. :o)

Memphish, I was going to skip taping the enhanced version this season until we saw info given that haven't even been mentioned in the show itself! I guess I've got to. :-p

Sorry for typos above. :-p

Episode titles are only spoilers to goofy people like me. Don't worry about it. It really isn't a big deal. It's just sometimes the titles can be a little revealing.
So really don't worry about it. It's just me. :)

Fenris said...

Okay here is something cranky.

I caught the film "Executive Decision" on TV the other night. I always had a soft spot for this film because of probably now well known about early twist in the plot (which I won't spoiler just incase). Was a nice idea. Anyway, the film involves a terrorist incident on an airplane.

The plane happens to be "Oceanic Airlines flight 343". That made me take notice. When I first saw it, it was before Lost so it was the kind of detail I'd never have remembered.

But anyway that's just a co-incidence (pretty sure anyway), Oceanic Airlines is a pretty generic title it's no surprise it has been used before and not why I'm brining it up.

The character that turns out to be the protagonist in the story is an "Intelligence Analyst". That would seem a good role for a "mathematician" at a military research centre.

For some reason in my memory Horrace looked a little similar to Kurt Russel in that movie. Checking back that's largely because they both wore glasses and had casual hair rather then a military cut despite being around soldiers (though of course I'm still making assumptions with Horrace).

So anyway, yeah, Intelligence Analysist.

maven said...

Wow, that's interesting, Fenris. I know it's difficult to come up with names of things in film/tv that can pass legal requirements. Maybe Oceanic is on a "list" of approved names for airlines? LOL

Capcom said...

You know Fenris, at first I didn't agree with your mathmetician/analysis connection, but then I remembered the story of John Nash (A beautiful Mind) and I rethunk my thought. :o) Nash worked at the Rand Corp doing exactly that, I believe.

Doc's Totally Lost video review of "Jughead" is up at EW. Very entertaining. Slight spoiler/teasers at the end with fair warning.

capcom - re Oak Ridge - the relatives I mentioned were young women they recruited from the greater Tennessee Valley and bussed in to live in dormitories and watch gauges and push buttons. None of them remained in the area after the war was over.

Now, I want to know the episode title. . .I'm so weak.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Thanks Takes a Village and maven. :) Warm fuzzies all around!

Do we have any confirmation that Horace was a mathematician, other than his word? Maybe the Arrow's real function was a secret to everyone but those inside, like the Orchid.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Here you go, Lost2010 - those who consider episode titles spoilers, avert your eyes!

**********

It's "The Little Prince."

memphish said...

Horace's jumpsuit said he was a mathematician. Mathematician was recently named the best job in America. Guess they didn't take into account the possibility of encountering Hostiles.

Executive Decision should have been a 3-minute movie. Shoot down the plane. It's done. Okay.

lost2010 said...

Thanks ML - I already took off to facebook to find out - - when I say weak. . .I mean pitifully weak. :)

Melissa_Lossa said...

memphish - but if the DI was hiding the true nature of the Arrow for some reason, wouldn't mathematician be a cover? Did the Orchid employees have jumpsuits that said "botanist"?

memphish said...

True ML. But then the teacher had a rifle in class, so do you think security was a secret?

ib4uc said...

Happy Lost Day fellow Locos. Just doing some catching up over the past 2 weeks and though I'd pop in.

maven said...

I don't think security was a secret. All the kids knew to "duck and cover" when the hostiles attacked. And I'm sure they all knew that the sonic fence was there for much more than keeping animals out.

But I do think the Orchid was a cover and a great effort was made to disguise it's true purpose. So, if the Arrow was also a cover-up, I wonder if there was always another agenda with the DI. If you can't be honest with your little group of recruited members, who could you be honest with?

Zort70 said...

Fenris - A recent episode of Bones had an Oceanic Airlines flight featured, it was a deliberate nod from one show to another.

Capcom - Charles Widmores accent is interesting as the actor is Australian doing a British accent, that is why it is a little confused some times.

I'm off now until Sunday (Fenris do you do this as well ?)

Melissa_Lossa said...

ah, true, memphish :)

Melissa_Lossa said...

I couldn't resist.

memphish said...

I forgot to listen too. It should be online within the hour.

I'm listening to the Get Lost podcast and they replayed the Faraday/Ellie scene about shooting a rifle by a hydrogen bomb. It's pretty darn sarcastic. That might explain a bit of distance between himself and his mother, assuming Ellie=Faraday's Mom.

Black Swan said...

melissa, congrats on 108!

There's something new with Ajira!! Billboard is found in LA. I hope this means there will be more with this.

Hey, BS: Where did you see that? Is it on the Ajira site? Do we know where in LA that is? It is intriguing...maybe Ajira will have a role to play in getting the O6 back.

DarkUFO has the Gregg Nations interview posted in the spoiler section, but there are absolutely no spoilers during the interview. He had to endure a bunch of really lame questions, actually!

And, Happy LOST Day!

Black Swan said...

I saw it at DarkUfo's in the OGR section after NOTLOST alerted me to it on myspace. It says the source is Facebook.

memphish said...

NPR's Day to Day had a "review" of the series by a TV Critic as well and a brief interview with Michael Emerson. No spoilers.

Black Swan said...

Boy, it took me forever to catch up to all the comments ... LOL! I would like to say to everyone, thanks for all the great links.

And I would also like to say pretty much "ditto, Capcom"... LOL! she pretty much echoed my thoughts on all this.

Also, I really liked the link Fenris gave on the last blog post:

US Swan Device

and if you follow some links from there, things get really interesting, so thank you, Fenris!

memphish said...

Listening to Gregg Nations. Is he serious that fans haven't caught mistakes? Is he saying that the date on Paolo and Nikki's newspaper is correct?

memphish said...

Ha Ha! Gregg Nations basically said if you aren't smart enough to keep up with LOST, get over it or just care who Kate ends up with.

Black Swan said...

Oh, and congrats to our leaders in the fantasy league!!! I'm doing better, but that's not saying much.

Fenris, also wanted to thank you for the info on 'vulgar Latin'.. very interesting.

Thanks for the actor info Zort! :-D

Very interesting about your relatives Lost2010. I went to the A.M.S.E. museum in Oak Ridge and there were pictures of young girls sitting on stools in front of huge machinery with lots of buttons. They figured girls would be good at that, like they were at key-punch jobs.

Billboards?! Oy, I sure am glad that Ajira does not fly to Knoxville! Whew.

What did I say, Blacky??? I forget! Haha. And yeah, that Swan bomb is really weird. What a quinkiedink, eh?! Now we have a chicken/egg situation with that as in, "does life imitate art, or does art imitate life"? :-o We'll have to ask TPTB about that one.

Fenris said...

hey Black Swan, your welcome on both counts. :)

Zort if your still here. Yeah, of course. I won't risk looking at anything lost related from the time it airs in the US until the time I see it. Always leaves lots of catching up on the comments!

So naturally I will disapear as soon as the episode starts (if not earlier).

Black Swan said...

Capcom, lol... I just remember agreeing with you when you were reacting to other ppl's comments AND:

capcom said...
I've always interpreted that Wid's and Paik's many companies were hired by Hanso to furnish his projects with their many products, and we have seen throughout the show and games that their products are pervasive where ever Dharma is.

Me, too..

That makes me think even more that if it's the radiation from Jughead that messes up fetuses (fetii?) that someone should have said to Juliet, "Oh by the way, our water glows in the dark soooo you might just want to add that variable to your research."

no kidding:)

and from this post:
capcom said...
I've always hoped that MDG meant Mittlewerk Dharma Group. As in a confrontation between AH and MDG that resulted in AH's confinement. But I seriously doubt that it will be that.

I doubt it too, but it SHOULD be this! lol!

Almost time! Do we have a new post?

Joseph Finchum said...

I know that the Lost Game was not really canon, but according to that there is a giant electromagnetic device under the hatch and not a nuke... would TPTB let something like that go?

Capcom said...

OK Blacky, wow some of those were a while ago, haha.

Right Ded. They said a "magnetic reactor" and after quick search, I didn't find any BIG apparatus that would work like the Swan's, but I didn't dig too deeply.

Fenris said...

DeDJeZTeR, yeah I was surprised as well in that game when you actually got to see behind the concrete to that device (and naturally stop to play a fun little sub-game.... actually I won't mock that, at least we didn't have to play a game of chess to access the computer eh?). But I doubt that the game had any extra cannon clues in it. They just took what details were out there (including the Lost ARG, which was a nice touch) and made something new from it. Although the weird conclusion does kind of fit in with stuff that is happening right now.

Joseph Finchum said...

Here is a link to the machine that is under the swan in the game.

If any of these 1950's others die, wouldn't Myles know about the bomb all ready... The Losties never ask questions, but if you can talk to dead people, wouldn't you know a lot more than everyone else by now.

So David is being Debbie Downer this week boo :P I thought this episode was great and was better than Jughead in terms of balancing the off island and on island scenes and keeping me interested in both storylines. Evil Sun is awesome!
