You've got 1 day to get in your concise LOST theory for Darlton's comments.

Capcom said...

Did you send one in Memphish?

memphish said...

Capcom, I don't have a pat overall theory, and I'm leaving town tomorrow and don't have time to come up with a cogent and coherent one, so I'll have to leave it up to others.

I am tempted to posit my Ben and Widmore were working together and have had a falling out theory. I'll see how getting ready to get out of town goes.

maven said...

Can anyone do their theory in 200 words or less? LOL

Capcom said...

Sounds interesting Memphish. Have a nice trip.

Good question Maven! :-D

Congested said...

Well it seems you don't have to have an overall theory, but just a theory. Good luck to anyone that gets theirs in.

Oh, and good podcast. Love the voicemail bits and all the stuff with the Room23 guys.

maven said...

Sounds like the TLC and Room23 guys had a blast discussing crazy theories!

I can't get my head around Annie=Harper theory, David! Why would Ben let "Annie" marry Goodwin? As punishment for something? And I think Harper's animosity towards Juliet is a girl thing: Juliet was just another good looking woman coming into their closed society...a potential threat. LOL

Dennis said...

maven said... Can anyone do their theory in 200 words or less? LOL

One Word: PURGATORY! ;)

memphish said...

Here's the theory on the freckage I sent to USA Today:

Many wonder who planted the fake 815 -- Ben or Widmore. I say they both did it. I think Ben and Charles Widmore have been working together to harness the unique properties of the Island. Additionally, they conspired to trap Desmond on the Island. Ben left Desmond alone in the Swan as part of that deal. Widmore provided money for front companies like Mittelos to recruit others such as Juliet to the Island. Both arranged for the fake 815 to keep search teams away from the Island. But over the years Ben and Widmore have drifted apart, and Ben saw the turning of the failsafe key as a way to end their cooperation. He cut off access to the Island with that event, and now Widmore is out to re-establish it. That's why the Freighter Folk want Ben alive, not dead. This is just a business deal gone off track, and the 815ers are in the way to getting it back on track.

Given time I could probably submit a dozen other theories, but that's all I have time for today. Looking forward to listening to the podcast!

Capcom said...

That's very interesting, Memphish!

Tess315 said...

Just seen a LOST commercial that confirms who shot at Alex,Danielle and Karl. But I won't say who it was. :)

Capcom said...

I saw that too Sayidsgirl. Shot my suspect theory right down. :-)

Capcom said...

FYI, part four of EW on the set is up in various places, including http://sawyer840.blogspot.com. The only semi-spoiler is when Sawyer is talking to the camps kids, so turn down the volume till that's over.

was all the widmore labs(pregnancy tests) stuff limited to stuff from oceanic flight 815, or was there island stuff ala widmore stuff in the swan drops. I think henry gayle's balloon was a widmore labs craft right, maybe im confused about that. If oceanic was stocked with widmore stuff then perhaps widmore was behind the freckage, but ben is slick enough to stock 815 witht that stuff just to pin it on widmore later...

memphis i agree there was some type of relationship between widmore and hanso and subsequently Ben. Harper being hanso certified seems to tie them all back together. If hanso got completely cut out off the island after the purge how would the hanso foundation have all its slick projects going today(joop,electromagnatism)... heres somemore concrete canon widmore hanso connections from lospedia...

Widmore Construction was shown in a flashback episode, where Drive Shaft are filming their videoclip near Battersea Power Station, which has a Widmore Construction banner hanging from one of the building's walls. ("Fire + Water")

Widmore Labs appear to have sponsored or manufactured the balloon for the real Henry Gale, as their logo was featured on its side.

Furthermore, Widmore Labs were the manufacturing company behind the pregnancy tests, seen a number of times on the show and used by Sun, Kate and Rachel. ("The Whole Truth") ("I Do") ("Not in Portland")

Widmore Industries was seen on the London building where Charles Widmore has an office. ("Flashes Before Your Eyes")
The Widmore Corporation organized the boat race Desmond participated in, which led to him shipwrecking on the Island. ("Live Together, Die Alone")

Bad Twin
The novel "Bad Twin" heavily features the Widmore family, with private investigator Paul Artisan hired to find Zander Widmore by his twin brother Cliff Widmore. The book at times mentions some interesting facts about the company, as well as its connections to The Hanso Foundation and Paik Heavy Industries.

In Chapter 4, Widmore is said to have "begun with mid-town real estate, then expanded to the financial district, Florida, California, the Caribbean..." and that "aspects to the Widmore businesses... arcane construction and engineering projects, investments in wide range of scientific enterprises... At times there had been murmurs of Widmore involvement in off shore ventures that would have been illegal on U.S. soil; other rumors hinted at classified defense contracting or private security work of questionable ethics."

In Chapter 6, Googling "Widmore Corporation" pulls up "over ninety-seven thousand references... sites about the sale of eleven-million-dollar co-ops on Park Avenue, and articles about the construction of office towers in Singapore... references to joint ventures with something called the Hanso Foundation, and links to engineering journals about new techniques for reinforcing concrete... society-page mentions of benefit galas, and investigative pieces about alleged environmental violations in obscure corners of the world."

In Chapter 6, we learn that Widmore and the Hanso Foundation both are housed in the Widmore offices on East 57th Street in New York City.

In Chapter 8, we learn that Widmore was doing a deal to go into partnership with Paik Heavy Industries.

In Chapter 23, in an apparent new change in the board at Widmore, Alvar Hanso was replaced by Thomas Mittelwerk.

In The Lost Experience
The Widmore Corporation is mentioned on Thomas Werner Mittelwerk's answer phone on the Hanso phone line alongside Paik Heavy Industries. He addresses them as colleagues currently involved in active projects with the Foundation. Similarly, Peter Thompson says that anyone making threats against his colleagues or representatives of the Widmore Corporation will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

It was later established that Rachel Blake worked for the Widmore Corporation before quitting her job and receiving a healthy severance pay, which she used to finance her investigations in Europe against the Hanso Foundation. Rachel speaks very little about her old job, though does boast that the computer she used, a Hillis Teraflop in the basement of the Widmore Corporation building, was "badass"

2costa said...

Assuming they were all working together at some point,if anything its widmore that betrayed alvar and ben and replaced alvar on his board of directors with mittlewerk...

2costa said...

if anything, i think the rift between ben and widmore goes at least all the way back to henry gayle getting killed..

Black Swan said...

Hi everybody! I've been on vacation and am just getting back into the groove here... I've tried to review all the past comments. Great stuff!

Thanks for the link to the USA Today theory mail-in. Here's what I submitted (taken mostly from old theories of mine-I added the Widmore stuff recently)

The Smoke Monster is the Dharma invention that makes precognitive remote viewing possible. This project involving Paranormal Warfare was the initial purpose of the Dharma Initiative to develop a plan to deal with the Cold War. It gets its power from the unique magnetic properties of the island and Jacob has the psychic abilities to give the Hostiles the advantage of "Smokey's" viewing. With it's help Richard grooms Ben to believe that his mother is on the Island, that he is the one and only "Jacob oracle", and that Dharma is evil and needs to be purged. Ben believes in the metaphoracle "magic box" because the hostiles falsely lead him to believe that he is omnipotent.

Richard Alpert & Co. have been tricking Ben and using him for their purposes for a long time, but are now losing confidence in Ben's abilities to get things done. Richard feels that Locke's healing abilities, faith in the island having a "specialness", and especially his gullibility will make Locke a great new "Jacob oracle" and appointed "leader" of the Island inhabitants. Charles Widmore works with Richard Alpert. Ben's "reign" on the Island is coming to an end.

Just seen a LOST commercial that confirms who shot at Alex,Danielle and Karl. But I won't say who it was. :)

Me too! And, like capcom, it shot my theory down(:

memphish, I like your theory! You said,
" But over the years Ben and Widmore have drifted apart, and Ben saw the turning of the failsafe key as a way to end their cooperation"

Does this mean you think Widmore only knows Ben when he's on the mainland and doesn't know where the island is until he gets hold of the Hanso journal?

memphish said...

No I think Widmore knows where the Island is but that Ben has cut off communications with the mainland and Widmore and has knocked offline the "safe" way to get to/from the Island that avoids unstuckness.

Black Swan said...

Ah, I see.

maven said...

Thanks, Codysmom!

2costa said...

well if a widmore labs balloon landed on the island at some time in the past, then ben knows that this isnt widmore first crack at getting to the island, henry gayle's corpse is proof of that,so we have already caught ben in a fib!

Zort70 said...

Is there any mileage in the theory that Ben and Widmore are related in some way ?

Perhaps an uncle / nephew type of thing ? Bens mother could be related to Widmore but dropped out of the family at some point.

Familys are always fighting ! (at least on TV anyway)

Capcom said...

Wow, 2costa, I never thought of the Widmore balloon in that way! I always thought of it as just a wacky guy who took some sponsorships from corporations to fund his trip. If that was just another one of the ways that Widomre tried to get to the island, then it gives even more meaning to Ben saying that Wid has been trying to get to the island for a long time. Good sleuthing! :-)

Wouldn't it be great if they were related Zort?!

Double Lost tonight! Woo-hoo! Even though they're repeats, I'm geeked.

Oddly, my online guide is showing tonight as one long episode, called Ji Yeon/Meet Kevin Johnson, running from 8 - 10 p.m. Any word on whether or not these are enhanced?

Capcom said...

Mine to Melissa, the titles in my local guide make it read as if JiYeon is meeting Kevin Johnson! :-D

Capcom said...

FWIW, there's apparently a new Michael Emerson taped interview going around, and from what I read in the recap (DarkUFO), it's very minor-spoilery, although vague. So if you don't want to know nuttin', don't listen to it. If you don't mind a handful of hints to come, go ahead.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I'm always amazed by how different Michael Emerson is when he's doing interviews. The man is a completely different person when he's genuinely smiling or laughing.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I'm excited about another ARG, but I'm thinking it won't be this summer, but maybe start a month or so before the beginning of Season 5 (similar to find815)? If I had my way, it would start after this season's finale and go right up to S5... lol

I really hope tonight's double-header is enhanced!

I'm soooo looking forward to sharing my thoughts on Philip K Dick's VALIS. I had read the book back in 1983, and again in 1991. This past month, I bought the audio book of VALIS in iTunes. It makes more sense to me now, than it did when I was younger. And the voice actor doing the book is excellent.

Don't think that there was any great revelations in last night's pop-ups. Pretty straight-forward for explaining things and exposition.

Happy Birthday tomorrow to David Penuel...our original Administrator!

Capcom said...

I was just going to say the same thing about last night Maven! Unless I missed something, as I left the room a few times, the enhancements were mostly about what had happened earlier this season and in season 2. No insight given, or even questions broached, about anything juicy like Tom in NY, etc.

Happy B-Day David!!! *<:-)

Melissa_Lossa said...

codysmom - it is SO nice here! It's supposed to cool down a little in the next few days, and we'll see some rain, so I'm enjoying it while it lasts. Hope you're doing the same!

The only thing I thought was interesting in last night's pop-ups was the mention that the bizarre occurances on the freighter were an homage to The Shining. I think someone here had mentioned that before, but it was nice to get some confirmation.

I think we're goign to try to talk Valis next week sometime - I'm e-mailing David now!

The OLP for ep 4.09 (DarkUFO) is pretty spoilery, for those who don't like to know ANYthing. If you don't mind knowing which questions will be answered/approached, go ahead and watch. As for me, I found it "comforting" to know that certain Qs will be addressed in the next ep. :-o

Capcom said...

What commercial Ded?

Wow, I hope that Memphish can find out about the game and contest somehow while she's on vacation!

Capcom: I think Ded's referring to the preview of next week's epi. There's a quick shot that shows who might have been involved in the Danielle/Karl shooting.

Tess315 said...

Was that commercial in the game? After watching the first few I just closed them when they opened since I'd seen what they were showing in the clips.

Doesn't really matter though. I've already seen it. They've been showing it all week on ABC.

Oh, OK. Yeah, I don't think that was very smart on whomever's part, showing the answer to that humungous question in a preview. Dumbdumbdumb.

Hello everyone!

I just wanted to check in and see how everyone is doing. I have been so busy here at school this semester, that I haven't been able to get on here at all to discuss this season with yall. God is amazing though, that's all I have to say!

I think this season has been amazing so far, and I cannot wait until this Thursday to get right back into it. From what I understand, with the shortening of the season, these last few episodes will be packed with action and plot.

I hope everyone is doing well, and I hope to be able to get on here more often as this semester winds down to a close. See you all later!

I've managed to avoid the promo though I've accidentally seen in print what I think I'm avoiding. Avoiding ABC stations hasn't been hard for me lately. I don't watch any other ABC shows, and with college hoops over I'm not watching ESPN either.

I see that the game at ABC.com with the clips is supposed to be available until June 30th, so I'm going to wait to do it. Is that the date everyone else understands?

Also, if I want to avoid pre-hashing can I watch the OLP after Thursday's episode? What about the rundown of the conference call that's out there? So far, I've only read the spoiler-free section. How forward looking is it?

I know it's crazy isn't it. Even TPTB avoided the qestion in OLVP but those promo guys don't seem to have a problem with it. Of course it could be misleading like so many of their other promos.

2costa said...

sorry if that was spoilerish, i thought the previews were fair game...

2costa said...

like is said to me the question is how much of this unfolding timeline is ben already privy to, i bet he knows all of this stuff, i wouldnt be surprised if ben has lived this over and over again and went back and made what tweaks he'd needed to make his preferred outcome...

2costa said...

i think its interesting that tptb have never commented on the possablility of it being alvar hanso next to mike in kevin johnson, i think all of you disgruntled tle fans may be used to there never being any tle content on the show, but after all the find815 payoff weve seen on the show i expect a lot of nods to us tle fans on the show

FYSB said...

Thanks 2costa. I'm sure the unspoiled folks appreciate it. Promos (except for what airs immediately after the show) are considered spoilers, that's why everyone was avoiding describing what they saw.

As for the timeline and Ben, I'm intrigued.

memphish said...

Happy Birthday Ellen!

If anyone's interested in more about Ben seeing the future and a general theory to explain all of LOST, check out Lost Unlocked and their podcast from 2 weeks ago called The Huge, Honkin Big Mega Island Theory. Host Chris outlines his theory in about 30 minutes and they spend another 30 or so going over questions about the theory. It's pretty scientific and pretty interesting.

memphish said...

Everyone check your recording devices. According to my cable guide, LOST airs Thursday from 10:02-11:00 Eastern time. Further complicating things, NBC has moved 30 Rock (one of my favs) to 9:31-10:01 Eastern. I'm sure in my paranoia, I'll skip any tags on 30 Rock to make sure I don't miss "Previously on LOST . . ."

maven said...

Memphish: I HATE when that happens! The networks have figured out a way to screw up our DVRs and TiVos! A lot of time I can't record something because the previous show goes over 1 or 2 minutes and it counts as being in the next hour (I can only record 2 things as once and that would make it 3!).

Happy Birthday again, Ellen!

Thank you!!! You guys are all very thoughtful...much needed. Thanks again!

Happy Birthday Ellen! *<:-)

The thing about preview spoilers is dicey, but #s 1 and 2 in the spoiler rules does point out the diff between after-show previews and later ones. It's true what you said, 2costa, about TPTB keeping secrets, but the network blowing them anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if someday there's a preview/promo that says, "Find out that the Smoke Monster is...(insert whatever)!" Stupid ABC, next time there is a Q & A with TPTB, we should ask them why they let the ABC spoil their secrets. :-p

2Costa - I read your post earlier earlier, and although I haven't seen the preview advert yet it was a kind of spoiler.

But in the grand scheme of things it hasn't ruined anything for me as it was a 50/50 chance anyway in my eyes. Although I voted for the other 50 !

The promo monkeys in all forms of television need some boundaries, I've seen a few cases in the UK where a character is left hanging on the edge of life, and the 'Coming next week..' promo has shown a funeral !

The show moving to 10:00 is gonna kill me -- why can't they just move Grey's to that time slot?

Yes, that's the weird thing about the game, they throw that extra object in there with the shotgun, for the bonus and entering the contest. Threw me off too, especially since we had to play the game five times to get the shotgun and entry form to show up. :-p

2costa, well to that I say, if TPTB do it badly, I will be disappointed. And if they do it well and spookily enough, then I will be excited about finding out who Smokey is. And what that means, I have no idea. :-D

2costa said...

i agree capcom, but cusedorph has straight out said some things will never be explained, and I'm good with that as long as like you said, they do the stuff well that they do explain. Its sweet that the flash fowards seem to be about season 5, and season 6 is still totally undiscovered country

Capcom said...

Yes, but I think that when they say that about things that won't be explained, they might mean all the more arcane aspects like details about the Swan and other stations, DI stuff, and details about people like Radzinsky where further info would not be germane to the whole of the story. At least that's how I interpret it.

Now Smokey, he is almost like a main character, and very complex (white flashing lights; mechanical sounds; drags, lifts, and kills people) so if they don't explain more about "him" it would be disappointing to me.

I found the comment by Nustes especially interesting (and so true!)

Tess315 said...

I don't feel I said to much in this post but if anyone disagrees please let me know and I'll delete it.

I think I would have to agree with Darlton. Like when they told us Desmond caused the plane to crash. There were so many people still saying no it couldn't have happened that way. With alot of fans if it's not the answer they want then it's not the answer.

I watched the OLVP and trying not to get into spoiler territory here, Smokie was asked about. They said ****************** we probably wouldn't be fully satisfied.
And I think this is what they're meaning. There's going to be people who are going to say no that can't be right. Because it's not what they expect. So they keep waiting for the answer that's already been given.

Black Swan said...

I understand your point, sayid'sgirl and I agree about some people wanting a certain answer, but when TPTB back off from previous statements and give explanations through characters we don't trust, it can make the viewers question anything that is presented. I think a big mystery of the show like smokie should be fully explained even though I understand that many things won't be. If I don't like the answer, well... it could be because I've read so many cool theories on this blog and other sites. Sometimes imagination is better than reality?

Tess315 said...

I tend not to qestion TPTB's decisions to much. Except for the flash forwards which I admit I was wrong about. I didn't think I'd like them.

It's their story and if they want to tell me great if they don't oh well. I'm actually more interested in the four toed statue than smokie.Which I'll probably won't find out about. Smokie I thnk will be explained so I'm not to worried about it. I can be patient.
As far as using unreliable characters to answer questions. Sometimes you have to read between the lines. Like Mikhail's whole I am Dharma story. There was truth there you just had to pick it out of the lies. That doesn't mean he lies all the time anymore than Jack tells the truth all the time.

I like trying to figure out who or if someone is lying to me and how much, to me that's part of the mystery too.
I'm werid I guess.

Black Swan said...

Oh, I think we fans understand PATIENCE....lol! And I think we all know about reading between the lines; isn't that what we do every week? We thrive on this, in fact, but when it comes to the main mysteries I want answers (at least by the end of the show). I'm definitely enjoying the ride, though, and I haven't been disappointed yet!

Tess315 said...

You're right. And I'm enjoying the ride too. I won't know what to do with myself when it's over.

Black Swan said...

lol, I don't even want to think about it!

maven said...

OMG! I can't even imagine how we're all going to feel in 2010!

I'm just going to be happy if we get some of the answers to some of the big questions like Smokie and the Statue, but I have a feeling a lot of us are never going to be satisfied no matter what answers we get. There are so many unanswered questions right now, and some things mean more to some of us than other things (we all must have our lists). And like you guys mentioned, it's going to be tough for us to accept the answers given because it might not jive with what we've been speculating about all these years.

I bought the Lost game at the weekend and I finished it last night.

Overall it was, as others have said, a slightly disappointing experience, but I'm glad I played it.

The only parts I found annoying were two bits which I had to do more than once that were preceeded by cut scenes which were quite long and I wasn't able to skip.

However the overall conclusion and the link to TLE adds to many of the theories / questions we have been discussing since this series started.

Capcom said...

Hi All.

Nice points on "answered vs. unanswered" everyone. I think that in this subject, the main 'problem' is the fact that in the nature of this show, TPTB wait so long to tell us what something is all about, that we have had sooooooo much time to guess about it, it's inevitable that some things won't live up to expectations compared to how they have been purposely built up and mystified. I guess what I'm trying to say is, TPTB kind of shoot themselves in the foot by the nature of their mega-suspenseful story telling. Disappointment has kind of been built in and set up for the viewers in some way no matter what in the case of LOST, because in the TV genre the preferred story telling media of choice has always been "intro, plot, conflict, questions, answers, the end". So...I guess in one paragraph, I have said that I agree with what Nustes said in Codysmom's link. :-)

And wow, that's so true about questioning in our minds about what we hear the less-trustable characters saying. I kind of feel that TPTB use this too much as red-herrings to throw us off, when there is already so (too?) much confusion. Like the thing now between trusting Widmore vs. Ben, and everyone in-between that is telling stories in their behalf. Everything that Capt Gault has said I'm pretty much ignoring at this point, cuz if I didn't my head would explode. :-) Which also poses a problem, in that I am watching some scenes with a blank head ignoring what I see and hear, so as not to take in too much wrong info. Is that what TPTB would want from their viewers? This kid of story telling does have its drawbacks, and its not fully without risk.

LOL Sayidsgirl about people not believing about the plane crash! It's so true.

Sorry for the long post!

Regarding leaving may questions unanswered, and the general format of television. Babylon 5 was different after it's first season.

The first season asked lots of questions, but from the second one onwards we started to get a feeling of what was to come, and indeed were told in no uncertain terms what happened to characters in the future. This added to the suspense for me as it was a question of how not what.

So much so that when the network started to play silly games, the last episode was filmed over a year before it was aired, so the final season had to catch up !

I asked a question a while ago as to whether after Lost has finished we would like to see a linear special of some of the story lines for a single character.

"A straight line between two points is the quickest route, but it is by no means the most interesting"

Capcom said...

Interesting Zort. I've wondered if TPTB might in the future ever release a DVD set with the entire story happening in linear series, just for the heck of it. I don't care if they were milking it for the bucks, or that I will already have all six seasons of DVDs, I'd buy that boxed set too! :-B

Who/where is that quote from Zort?

I think it would be great! As it is, I can see going thru all the DVDs from Season 1 through the end with a whole new perspective when this is all over. (Hey, there's an idea about what we can do when Lost ends.... continue the blog going back to the beginning). One thing I did like about the N**** and P***** episode was seeing the storyline from a another view.

I know what you mean. Sometimes I'm just having a hard enough time understanding the things that are being straightforwardly presented let alone twisting it! Two weeks ago I foolishly thought it was too early for there to be anything LOST in it. Sure enough there was something there I didn't want to see.

I've been so good about not reading the TV Guide spoilers, and then today a friend blurted out something I didn't want to hear! This is a casual viewer and she just didn't understand how some of us avoid any info about upcoming episodes and consider them spoilers. Her response was "It was in TV Guide!" That's where the worst ones are!

Tess315 said...

As far as I recall it is said by the 3rd Doctor in The Time Warrior.

**Potential Doctor Who Spoiler Ahead**
The level of spoiler is akin to me saying that Ethan is in the next episode of Lost (which I don't know if he is or not it was just an example)

The quote is a nice tie in to this weeks new Doctor Who episode. I won't say why just in case you consider it a mild spoiler, although if you know what the Time Warrior is about then the damage is probably done.

So we are past the 1/2 way mark on the season I'm guessing. I probably need to rewatch the episodes thus far and re-calibrate my expectations. I kept waiting for certain storylines to come into play but now I'm thinking that if we're past the 1/2way point, they are probably mainly going to wrap up the storylines they already opened. Oh, who am I kidding, I'm not going to take the time to rewatch anything between now and Thursday.

Unknown said...

How do you not know that we're past the halfway point??

Teasing, of course. But yes, we're through 8 hours of a scheduled 14. And don't forget, they've got an ultimate finish line in their sights. Any expectations of the usual beginning/end structure as it relates to these seasons, should be tempered by the nearness of that vanishing point.

lost2010 said...

I wish someone could go ahead and read the last chapter for me and let me know whether we're to anticipate a happy ending. I don't really like stories that don't have reasonably happy endings. . . . Except Gone With the Wind. . . And that was only because I knew deep down that she'd get him back somehow. :)

memphish said...

Well I don't think we're going to get a "Tomorrow is another day . . . " ending Lost2010. TPTB have been saying they want to slam the door shut on this story when it's over. And to me that sounds like we're going to get a pretty tragic ending. I fully anticipate crying my way through a jumbo box of Kleenex come that last night in May 2010. And I'm okay with that.

Starting the roundup of LOST in the media today. Here's the link to the USA Today viewer theory story. The main body of the article has no spoilers. So I'm not going to read any more of them until tomorrow.

I wish it would have aired last night leaving me free to merely laugh at The Office and 30 Rock tonight. I'm also anally anxious about my recording of shows on the DVR tonight making sure I get every minute of each, and annoyed that they're probably going to make me watch 2 minutes of Grey's Anatomy to get to LOST. Capcom said...

Spoiler Report #2; Doc Jensen Page-1 (spoiler's are "XXXX"):

"To their tease, I would add this: ''The Shape of Things to Come'' also happens to be the title of a famed H.G. Wells book, which also spawned a movie written by the author called, more simply, Things to Come. When I asked the producers what the episode and Wells' work have in common, they said it basically boils down to one word:

XXXXXXX.

I leave it to you to investigate further for now. Tune in tomorrow for my recap, in which I'll offer my highly theoretical and mildly incoherent two cents.

CRACKING THE DHARKA CODE!

A couple weeks ago, I teased tonight's episode — and my recent feature story about Lost — with a single, silly word: Dharka. I asked you guys for guesses, and you responded with some interesting theories. By far the most popular was this one from reader Jason Hollen:

''Dharka is a word in the language Urdu, which is the national language of XXXXXXX, meaning XXXXX. So, the reference refers both to the fact that Locke camp is XXXXXXXXXX and also that the XXXXXXXX takes place in the XXXXXXX. The coming XXXX will be set up with a XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and the XXXXXXXX of one of the XXXXXXXXXX. My first thought was Dharma in XXXXXXXX, but I don't believe that to be right now. Also, it would be a nice play on words for Dharma and Karma.''

No, folks, the correct answer comes from the tag-team tandem of ''ErasedSlate'' and ''JimmyJamz,'' who pooled their powers to win my Doc Jensen No Prize. To be clear, it was Jimmy who guessed it and Erased who pitched it after reading it on another message board; my understanding is that these guys don't even know each other. You gotta love the Internet. And so it goes that last week, I got the following e-mail from Mr. Slate:

''So, is Dharka a Dharma XXXXXX?''

DING! DING! DING! You are correct, sir(s)! To elaborate on the opening paragraph of my on-the-set report, I spent St. Patrick's Day at a XXXXXXXXXXX where Lost was shooting a scene in which Ben makes a trip to a XXXXXXXXXXXXXX in the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. But for some reason, he's wearing a XXXXXXXXXXXXX bearing a Dharma Initiative logo. Don't ask me: I'm sworn to secrecy about the specifics...but I'll give you another tease. Ready? Here it is:

Double-Crossing Telescopic Two-for-One Ass Whooping!

The answer is so spoiler sensitive, I won't be able to reveal it until tomorrow's recap, although by then I'm sure you'll have figured it out, as you, too, will have seen what I have seen. And what I've seen? Kick-ass. I think this wait will be worth it."

P.S. I X'd out the first reader's Dharka guesses, because he may have gotten some of his info from spoilers that he read. And it did jive with spoilers that I read too.

Spoiler Report #3; Doc J. page-2:

"THE HIGH-STAKES SIGNIFICANCE OF LOST'S SUPER-SIZED SEASON FINALE

Perhaps most of you have heard the cool news that Lost's season finale will now be a two-hour affair, airing from 9-11 p.m. on May 29. When I interviewed DL and CC 23 days ago, they were just beginning to recognize the need for another hour for season 4 as they were finishing up the first draft of the finale. I could sense they were feeling the pressure of wrapping up the season's storylines, especially after last year's crop of season cappers, in which Lost's flash-forward stunner was widely acclaimed for reinventing the series but a host of other shows (particularly Heroes; remember that show?) were blasted for fumbling their finales. As Lindelof explained:

''The finale that we are writing now is in many ways the pilot for what season 5 is going to be. Creative choices we are making and where we leave our characters at the end of the season have to hold from May 22 and the end of January of next year [the projected start of Lost's fifth season]. The finale, there's a tremendous amount of pressure on us; it's like playing in the championship if you're a basketball team. You have to play enormously well or else [the fans] will hold it against you — especially if you're off the air for eight months and you don't have a reset button like 24. Shows like Lost or Heroes or Grey's Anatomy, they are judged by their last episodes, and the taste in the audience's mouth after the last episode has aired directly influences the storytelling coming in next season.''

Actually, the stakes might be bigger than that, given the fundamental challenge facing Lost next season. In my interview, I asked the writers a question unrelated to the finale: Does the prospect of 36 more episodes — the number of episodes left before the end of Lost — feel like too much, not enough, or just right in terms of bringing their story to a conclusion? This was Damon's response, which was seconded by Cuse:

''From our vantage point right now, they feel like they're just enough. The real trick of season 5 will be getting to season 6 without feeling like it's stalling. Because the audience is so used to the narrative moving at 90 miles an hour [this season] that even a reduction of speed to 70 will feel slower. So as far as the pacing of the fifth season goes, we have to basically hold back on the things the audience really, really cares about for the final season.... I think because people love season 4 so much, I think all of us are preparing for the inevitable 'Season 5 sucks, it was completely unnecessary, let's just get to the good stuff.' Although we think we have some really great stuff in season 5, it is the connective tissue that will bring us home. But that is the nature of the beast.''

Capcom said...

Spoiler Report #4; Doc J. page-3:

To be very clear, you should not read this statement as an admission from the producers that season 5 will be anything less than essential Lost; they were merely articulating the creative challenge of a show that is now able to truly tell its story as if it were a novel — and we all know that novels save the big revelations for the last chapters.

Bottom line: It would be a shame if all the renewed creative mojo and pop-culture buzz that season 4 has mustered for Lost would be wasted on a lame finale. Of course, giving the show an extra hour doesn't automatically guarantee that the finale won't suck; the guys are still gonna need to play their butts off in that championship match. But from a fan's point of view, I'm glad ABC has put the writers in a position to play their best possible game.

That's it this week. I have to admit, Doc Jensen is still recharging his batteries from a recent mess of non-Lost work. I just got back from London on a top-secret mission (more on that later this year), but Lost proved inescapable. Just down the street from my hotel, there was Charles Widmore himself, Alan Dale, starring in Spamalot. (FYI: those rumors of Lost recently trekking to XXXXXXX to shoot some scenes with XXXXXX and XXXXXXXXXX? True. I also hear that XXXXXXXXXX wasn't the only Hawaii-based Lost actor to make the trip...) Down the street the other direction is one of my favorite comic-book stores in the world, Forbidden Planet London. As I shopped, I heard a trio of blokes discussing Lost; two of them had just discovered the show on DVD and were encouraging the third to do the same.

On my way out of London, I found a book at Heathrow Airport called The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. The book grapples with ideas that I've long argued are essential Lost themes: how we make sense — or fail to make sense — of incredible, sometimes catastrophic events; how we live our lives amid the ambiguity of uncertainty. But what caught my eye was the jacket art of the book: The ''black swan'' featured on the cover looks very, very similar to the is-it-a-swan-or-is-it-a-snake? logo of The Hatch, a.k.a. Station 3: The Swan. The book was published in 2007, so I can't make one of my patented crazy-talk assertions that The Black Swan is some kind of secret Lost text. But who knows? Maybe Jack could pick up the book in a future flash-forward. It's very much a ''man of science'' kind of tomb...."

I stopped rating them when Darlton gave someone an A and said they were close. I'd have to say the Tomorrowland theory with Orson the Hanso Otter was my favorite:)

Darton keeps emphasising that the show is character driven, rather than driven by the mythology. Hope that doesn't mean we won't get ANSWERS to our BIG QUESTIONS. I have to admit, I got involved with the show because of it's strong character development, but after the ARGs, I feel just as interested in the mythology. It makes me wonder if I'd look at the show differently had I not played TLE and find815?

I'm jealous Codysmom, I have to keep running to the den during commercials to see what you guys have said!

yeah, capcom, I'm excited to try it out. Hope it doesn't make me miss the show, since I'll be watching, reading, and writing at the same time. Not sure I can multitask as well as I used to:) Tonight, I'll test it out....

Happy, Happy LOST Day!

Thanks soooo much for all the spoiler-free postings, Capcom and Melissa_lossa! We all appreciate you taking the spoiler hits, while the rest of us get the flavor of all the media out there.

Codysmom said: ...for the first time tonight I'll be watching the show with the added plus of having a laptop for "chatting" with you guys!
I'll just put in my 2 cents "whine" that I'll probably have to wait until tomorrow to chat with TLC. Most of you will be trying to sleep as your minds race with LOST while I am still watching! Boo-hoo! :(

It's drizzly, rainy and gray here today. I feel like I need to either get in a nap or brew another pot of coffee or both if I'm going to make it through tonight.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Yea, codysmom! I love chatting during the show on my laptop - I'll see you online tonight then. :)

I run back and forth to my PC. I call it exercise.

Happy Lost Day Everyone!!!
I've waited to long to say that again. Thanks for all the links everyone posted today. Should be an exciting night. I have my computer in the living room with my tv. So I'm watching taking notes and blogging. And yes codysmom sometimes I miss some little things here and there.
maven hope you try and drop in a little tonight would like to hear what you have to say.

Thanks, Sayid'sgirl, I'll try if I'm not too tired.

Usually, I take notes (in longhand, not the wireless laptop that's nearby), and during commercials I check the blog and scroll down until I start seeing you guys talking about something after the current commercial (that way I can try and keep up with the 100's posted before I'm done). I also watch the posting times so I know I don't get ahead of myself! LOL

Hey, Dennis, is there going to be a new post soon?
