First! Gonna listen to the podcast shortly! Interested in the interview with Anne Dawson. I bought her book a few weeks ago (if I had only waited for the contest!), and I'm enjoying the word puzzles...fun to do when you've got a few minutes to spare or you're waiting at the doctor's office.

I'm looking forward to the podcast and the interview. I'll save it until tomorrow so I'll hve LOST content for a Thursday. Only 3 more weeks!

Ok...listened to the podcast. You guys are so very good and thorough (plus Ange's Bullet Points are so well-thought out)!

Just want to add: Maybe Ben doesn't like the book that Juliet picked out simply because he wants to be in charge of everything. Remember, Juliet makes a comment about free will in their community, but Ben manipulates everyone to do things his way.

I agree with you, David, that Locke is acting like a mentor/teacher to Walt to help him realize his power and harness/control it. Carrie's power goes horribly wrong in the end. She really had no one to help her understand her extraordinary gift.

Enjoyed the interview with Anne Dawson. The book is very well done, and I do like that the answers are on the back of the page after a few puzzles. So you can cheat and/or peak without looking ahead to more of the same type of puzzle.

Morning! This is a place marker/e-mail sign up/comment.

I thought something David said on the podcast (and Maven mentions) was interesting. It was about Ben thinking the book was depressing because of Carrie's untapped potential. How he may have though that it was a shame that she had this power and no one taught her how to use it or in turn tapped it for something. That totally struck a chord with me, and made me go, "OH YEAH!".

Great podcast Davis and Melissa, even with the sound issues. It really has become one of the things that I look forward to each week. Oh and thanks for having a look at the bullets :D.

Doc Jensen reviews S4 so far. There is a one word tease in the first half of the first page, but in my opinion it is incredibly vague and gives nothing away. The title of episode 9 is also in the first half of the page in the paragraph right about the Mid Season Report Card heading.

Glad you all enjoyed the podcast. We had some newer people on, and I think some of them were confused. :)

I believe the 24th is the season premiere of Ugly Betty at 8:00 and Grey's Anatomy at 9:00, which is why Lost will be on 10:00.

BTW, I didn't want to mention this on the front page, but you can read Valis for free online HERE.

Hopefully, the enhanced "Meet Kevin Johnson" will be on the 17th. Unless they double up episodes, they don't have enough weeks to re-air all 8 before the 24th. (Though they probably will be airing repeats of Ugly Betty and Grey's to get their audience up to speed.)

Thanks for the link again to VALIS, Dennis. I got a library book (since returned) so now I'll have your link for a reference point!

According to TV Guide.com next Thursday they have 2 hours of Desparate Housewives 8-10 and Eli Stone at 10.

The Thursday after that the 17th. They are going to show Ji Yeon and Meet Kevin Johnson back to back from 8-10. It doesn't say whether or not if they're enhanced or not. But I'm going to assume/hope they are since it doesn't say anything about tonight's episode being enhanced.

TPTB have hinted that the sickness of Rousseau's team is what Desmond and Minkowski suffered, so here's my question -- what boundary did Rousseau's team pass through to trigger this unstuckness? Is there a boundary like the one around the Island somewhere on the Island? The top candidate from Rousseau's story would be somewhere in the Dark Territory. Maybe that's where Tom and Ben can travel off the Island.

Capcom said...

Do you mean besides the storm boundary around the island? Didn't Rousseau mention that it was stormy when they arrived at the island? So they must have gone through that one first at least. But do you think that they somehow got affected by some event other than their initial arrival? Perhaps the dark territory is where the Orchid is/was, and some experiments where going on and they got zapped or something. This I'm guessing, without looking at the timeline to see if it's possible. Or if this fits the timeline, could she and her team have gotten in the crosshairs of The Incident? I have to check the timeline to see where those events happen. It probably doesn't fit at all, I'm just guessing here. :-)

Capcom said...

BTW, Rousseau better not be dead, TPTB owe us a flashback for her, daggummitt! :-(

memphish said...

Yes Capcom, I do mean more than crossing onto the Island. Let me try to recap.

Rousseau's team crashes on Island as does Desmond and the 815ers. Minkowski and Brandon approach Island on a tender (aka dinghy).

So far the "sickness" we've seen is Desmond who arrived on Island, began taking shots, was fine for 3 years, tried to sail away from the Island and couldn't but was still fine, turned the key and was still fine except for the flashes and the time travel without nosebleed consequences in Flashes Before Your Eyes and THEN finally crosses back through the boundary and gets unstuck complete with nosebleed.

The other sickness we've seen is Minkowski and we've heard about Brandon. I guess they were exposed to radiation/magnetism, got close to the Island and at that point Brandon got sick and later Minkowski does. It's hard to say if passing or re-passing through the boundary was what triggered them. It's almost like going in affected Brandon and coming out affected Minkowski.

If Rousseau's team was sick I'd surmise they were exposed pre-Island to radiation/magnetism (and there are those who think that's the kind of science team they were). Then they passed through the boundary, and as far as we know the never went back through the boundary. So that's my question. Is it coming, going, coming and going? And is there some place on the Island that can trigger it as well?

The way the sickness is working does not seem to be consistent and I'm not 100% satisfied with the answer "some people have side effects."

Capcom said...

I would guess that it's going through it either way that gets you. If it's an energy field of some sort, it probably wouldn't matter which way you're going through it. I took Dan's explanation to mean that if you've ever gotten intense EM radiation, the first time you go through the barrier you'll start unsticking, until you find your constant and stop it (or die), etc. Although that begs the question, how can Frank keep flying back and forth through it? Does he already know about the constant? Hmmm.

But, I really like your idea that something could have happened on the island that zapped R's team while they were trekking around. Maybe their first exposure was going through the energy barrier, and then something happened on the island as well? Again, come on TPTB, give us the overdue scoop!

lost2010 said...

I thought it was like this maybe:

Rousseau's team are scientists. Maybe they were doing similar experiments to whatshisname. Maybe Rousseau wasn't allowed around those experiments because she was pregnant and radiation was hazardous to the baby.

Then they cross the barrier coming to the island. Then they start to get sick but at first they don't seem sick - just exhausted and fatigued. And maybe some of them just instinctively reach out to their constants without even realizing what they're doing. But if your constant dies, maybe you get sick again.

What we need to do is convince the writers to haul Locke out to the barrier so we have some frame of reference - Charlie and Eko are already dead and they were the only other ones around during the implosion.

Tess315 said...

If we assume Danielle and her team had been exposed to radiation before crashing on the island then went through the barrier then that is probably what made them "sick". I'm also assuming Danielle hadn't been exposed to radiation since she was pregnant which is why she didn't get sick.
The same would go for Minkowski and Brandon we'd have to assume they were exposed to radiation before going into the barrier.
Desmond wasn't exposed to radiation until he turned the fail safe key. So when he tried to leave the first time in his sail boat he wasn't affected.
He was affected in Frank's helicopter due to turning the key.
I guess we'd have to assume Frank hasn't been exposed to any radiation recently is why he isn't affected.

Tess315 said...

My opinion is that coming or going can effect you as long as you've been exposed to radiation first.
Also the effect you have can be in different degrees of severity.
Dan said it could be a few hour or in Desmond's case years.

Capcom said...

LOL Lost2010! :-)

Ditto what you said Sayidsgirl, that sounds good.

maven said...

Good explanation, Sayid'sgirl. Being exposed to radiation/em seems to be the key plus having a constant. It might be reason that the O6 are the ones to leave...Hurley, Jack, Kate, Sayid and Sun were far from the purpling (and maybe Aaron was too young).

memphish said...

Isn't some part of Danielle's story that it didn't start to happen for a month or more after they arrived on the Island? I know she tells the end of S1 A-Team on the way to the Black Rock that it began in the Dark Territory.

And here's another question -- why isn't Faraday unstuck? Is it because he met Desmond even though he didn't realize he was his constant until he looked at the note again? Even so, Faraday spent at least an entire day not being unstuck before he ran into Desmond at the helicopter.

I just hope they come up with consistent rules for this. Having just watched the original Shaggy Dog I'm not a fan of multiple shape-shifting or in this case time unsticking rules.

lost2010 said...

You're right they'd been on the island 2 months before anything happened. Danielle seemed to think "they" the others were carriers.
I wonder if her others were Dharma or Hostiles? (ala Richard)
I think she was there before the purge happened (although she was still there when it did happened)Maybe her team did get exposed to electromagnetism due to the incident. Maybe her team caused the incident. The reason I say that is her team was a science team with guns as Sayid said to her. Dan,Charlotte and Miles are a science team with guns. Maybe Danielle came to the island for the same reason Dan and his team did to claim the island.
Ben told Mikhail in TTLG that the island was facing a danger worse than it had ever before. (not an exact quote)Maybe Danielle's team was a threat or at least percieved as one. I don't know.
Oh and I agree we need her back story and I thought TPTB said we'd get it "maybe" next season.
As far as Faraday being stuck or unstuck is still a mystery to me. He didn't seem unstuck when he was on the island. He seemed to be in his own time. Except maybe when he wsa doing the card game with Charlotte. Maybe he wasn't jumping time very far.

maven said...

Good luck, Kyle. Sounds like a lot of fun!

memphish said...

Good luck Kyle! Are you reading LOSTpedia or rewatching episodes to prepare?

Sayid's Girl, I'm not sure if Danielle and team got there pre- or post- Purge. We've never really gotten a clear answer. But I always assumed post-Purge since Ben raised her. He clearly didn't have a baby with him while he was still living with his Dad. Which is not to say that these events could not have occurred very, very close together.

And thanks for backing me up on the "sickness didn't happen immediately" line of thinking. Of course, how much we can trust Danielle's story is another one of those variables we can't pin down.

I'm really just assuming Danielle was there before the purge because she would have crashed on the island in 1988. I always thought the purge happened after Mikhail got there in the early 90's. But I could be wrong in my assumption.

2costa said...

i think mikhail came after the purge, also i think danielle came after the purge or she would be dead, i dont think ben was in the baby stealing business before the purge.

i was watching the enhanced confirmed dead and was wondering if they went in to detail about filming in hawaii during miles ghostbuster part for a reason, especially after the debate about miles' 2008 plates, if your gonna go to the lengths of putting fake calfornia plates on a car, why are you gonna mess up the year?

it was rather strange that the ghostbuster customer had a picture of young eko on her wall, i was thinking maybe she sponsered him for 30 cents a day?

2costa said...

i believe that the swan film that was post purge i believe was circa 1984 or 85

memphish said...

Kyle, Thanks for the music recommendation. We'll take it under advisement.

2Costa, the Swan film is copyrighted 1980 and mentions the Incident, but we don't know that the Incident and the Purge are the same thing. There are theories that they are, but I'm in the camp that they aren't.

As for Mikhail being there pre- or post- Purge, I always thought it was after. I know he told the story of being recruited by Dharma, but I think he was lying about it being Dharma who recruited him and instead it was one of Ben's shell companies similar to Mittelos.

But it should be the case that Kelvin arrived there post-Purge because he didn't get there until the 90s at earliest and Gregg Nations, the script supervisor and other PTB always refer to Kelvin as Dharma. So I do think some form of Dharma survived the Purge be it on or off Island.

Tess315 said...

The Swan film had all rights reserved 1980 at the end of it. Which would make it post incident but not necessarily post purge.
When Kelvin joined the Dharma Initiative it would have been after the Gulf war so it had to be after 1991. And I don't think the purge had happened yet when he joined but maybe very soon after. Mikhail said he had been on the island for 11 years which would make it 1993.
But like I said it's just my assumption and I could be wrong.
When you base your thoughts on a bunch of liars it makes it hard.

Tess315 said...

That sounded a little harsh didn't it. But it is true you never know which character is telling the truth if any. or how much is true or how much is lie.

Capcom said...

No, it's true! On this show, even if a character is not lying, then they are too crazy to believe outright! We really don't know what to believe that is spoken.

memphish said...

We certainly don't know who to believe and when to believe them.

1 podcast, I can't remember which, was talking about the concept of the unreliable narrator when it comes to Michael's flash during Meet Kevin Johnson. It was an unusual flash in that it was presented as Michael telling Sayid what happened instead of us having a true omniscient view of the past. There's been debate back and forth during the course of the series as to how reliable the flashes are. Are they memories of the characters, which have some degree of unreliability and are changeable, or are they us seeing things as an invisible observer.

Truth on LOST can definitely be a relative thing.

They are actually trying to show all three previous seasons in their entirety this week before tonight's final season premiere. A bit ambitious, and they've skipped at least one episode that I've noticed, but it's been pretty great to watch.

I'll listen to the podcast tomorrow, when my BSG immersion is over.

Only 3 more Thursdays to Lost!

2costa said...

i think that the swan film copyright might be innaccurate or misleading, because they seem to have made some edits to the existing swan film that existed before the incident. The pearl film has the same copyright year but was obviously preincident, judging by marvin having two good hands. So its possible that the copyright was from the more original swan film, but i do agree that the incident and the purge are not one in the same...

2costa said...

i beleive a twist we might be in store for is that Ben is indeed working with hanso, at least the alvar branch of hanso, since it would seem that ben brokered the oceanic six deal, also by the way jack uses his golden pass seems to show there an island ben connection to oceanic. the way abbadon doesnt work for oceanic and doesnt know the fate of people on the island seems to show that the freighter people will not be saving the oceanic six, maybe the frieghter itself, but not the crew. SO if you look at it that way mikhail and kelvin and ben are dharma, hanso to be mor eprecise, considering harper had a hanso certificate not a dharma one...

memphish said...

I agree 2Costa that a copyright date is inconclusive at best. I don't think we have enough info. or mosaic tiles to quote Carlton to say for certain what the timeline is in the Island's pre-815 past.

A2BH, enjoy BSG. I've never watched it, but I've got it in my Netflix Queue for the next interminable LOST hiatus. I know a lot of people are very excited about the premier tonight. Ack Attack's live journal that I've been linking to with those funny LOST recaps will have BSG recaps. You might want to check them out. I know there's a link in the last thread.

Question for the blog -- How do you personally (or from other sources you've read/heard) reconcile the 31 minute time difference shown by Faraday's experiment with the timeline we've been given in Meet Kevin Johnson and the dates on the calendar on the ship?

Tess315 said...

Michael left on the raft right after Thanksgiving and was back about a week before Christmas it was day 91 when Jack talked to MInkowski and Naomi showed up a day or two before that. So that's about 2 to 21/2 weeks for Michael to leave on the raft get to New York and then be back on the freighter. It's tight but I guess it's possible especially if Ben had someone waiting for Michael out in the ocean somewhere. It seems like a short time to become suicidal but when you do all this for your son and he doesn't want anything to do with you, maybe not. We don't know when he told Walt what he had done whether on the boat or in New York.

As far as the 31 one minutes. I'm not sure if it's accumulative which could possibly add hours, days, months or even years. Or if it's a constant 31 minute difference that never changes.

The dates on the calandar I can't remember. I'll have to go back and check when I have time. I think the had been check off in October is that what you're questioning?

memphish said...

The main thing I'm wondering about Sayid's Girl is why the discrepancy in the experiment, but no substantial discrepancy on and off Island in terms of the dates.

Back when that experiment aired people were coming up with all kinds of craziness like 8 years had passed off Island since they crashed, or a year and a half had passed, but best we can tell, it's exactly the same date on and off the Island despite Faraday's exposition about time perception on the Island being different.

The 31 minutes could be a constant, but it equally could not be. I'm just wondering how everyone around here is thinking about that discrepancy given that Michael's timeline seems to confirm the Freighter calender's conclusion that it is indeed approx. 12/26/04 both on and off Island.

Tess315 said...

Ok I see. If it's a constant 31 minutes it wouldn't be that big of a deal.
You're right everyone was trying to figure out what that time difference may mean myself included.
According to the pop ups time is the same on the island as it is on the freighter.
I guess we got caught up in the time difference because of the flash forwards. Maybe they get off the island but don't go to civilization right away. Because I can't see them waiting what seems to be 2 years to prosecute Kate.
Hopefully when we get the next 5episodes it will be a little clearer.

Tess315 said...

If it wasn't for Alex I'd say there could be a substantial time difference.
I found it odd how they worded what day it was on the island in the pop up. It said according to Danielle's iteration it was day 91 on the island.
I don't know I guess it probably didn't mean anything since Alex does seem to be 16.
But why not just say it's day 91?

i had another thought after watching presumed dead. The way that miles threw an out of the chopper and all four of the fan four seemed scattered across the island. I think they might have been triangulating the island with their phones for the freighter to come up with a better perception of where or when the island is.

Has anyone ever floated the theory that Jin is not dead or on the island, rather he is one of Bens henchman off island like sayid, but without the notoriety, or at least gets to leave sometimes like tom and doesnt contact sun because ben says he'll hurt her and his child. It sort of ties into my "the people over water during the purpling will be allowed to leave" thing, much like i think sawyer will be allowed to leave. Sawyer and Jin are the only two warph/sailboatys that are not accounted for in the oceanic six. Ill add that mike and walt were also on the warph pier and were allowed to leave...

memphish said...

2Costa, at one point during Ji Yeon I thought Jin might be a Sayid-style assassin for Ben, but now I don't think so. I think he's still on the Island.

My theory is that Ben took some off Island and left someone on the Island for each person to threaten to keep the O6 in line. So Sun left, but Jin's still on Island, Claire and Sawyer are still alive on Island to keep Jack, Hurley and Kate in line. Sayid feels guilt about all of them left. I don't know. Maybe not.

In any event, Abaddon thinks people were left behind alive, and I think Hurley and Jack's flash forwards indicate they know people were left behind alive too.

2costa said...

i agree there are people alive on the island, i just think theres more to jin and sawyer's story, and their ultimate purpose, off island. Im not convinced that claire is gonna make it through this season, but you never know.

I think it was strange that locke's idea of democracy and full disclosure in meet kevin johnson was to include claire in the meeting and hurley i guess, what about the other 40 redshirts.

in order for them to get to the milestones they said they were gonna achieve this season i think the last five are gonna be action packed. Hopefully the finale will have a great WTF moment like last saesons

Memphish, I just read this week -- on some blog, posted by some blogger -- that we should maybe think of the 31 minutes as not a set constant differential. As in, maybe it just depends how long it takes you to get through the barrier. Perhaps sometimes it takes longer, and sometimes it takes less, depending on how much you are bounced around in the void of the transition? Could be possible. That would also give TPTB the leeway of not having to cast a specific time difference in cement, for time on and off the island. But that still doesn't resolve anything specific about how long it took Mike and Walt to get back to the world. :-(

2costa, if Ben is working with the original Hanso org, then maybe he really is working against Mittlewerk. And if he is working against Mittlewerk, then I guess it does make him a good guy, dammitt. But I still don't think that Ol' Man Hanso would approve of Ben killing people willynilly all the time, in the Hanso name.

2costa said...

ben usually keeps his hands clean he was off killing his dad during the purge, ben is like manson where he trys to hold on to deniablility. He ussually lets others do his dirty work, i doubt that ben would have shot locke right where his kidney would be unless he knew he survive. He probably made walt appear to locke in the pit or just had smokey replicate him, considering the producers said sometimes walt is smokey. Also it seems like he shot charloote in the chest because he knew she was wearing a vest. In his mind ben is a good man, just like with goodwin, we know he set him up to die, but to ben it was ana lucia or karma or whatever

memphish said...

Thanks for that info. Capcom. I'm a fan of the theory that the bearing you go through the barrier determines how long it takes you to get there. Michael and Walt went through at 325 and were back in New York pronto as the timeline suggests. The helicopter went through each time at 305 a heading that for those in the chopper felt like it took say 30 minutes to an hour to cover 80 km, but which on Island felt like 24-36 hours, and I guess you might argue it did indeed take 36 hours (even though it felt like 1 hour or less) given that they took off at dusk and arrived at midday as Sayid said. Let's say the bearing the payload took was somewhere between 325 and 305, and closer to 325, then it was only off 31 minutes.

Sorry for the confusing nature of that explanation, but that's where I'm leaning. I was wondering after all the math people did when that episode aired what people are thinking about it now.

Capcom said...

No, you made sense! That's what I'm leaning towards thinking as well, even though my brain still can't accept it completely without a little bit of pain. :-)

Yeah, it was only natch for us to try the math out when Dan's experiment happened. But I am very happy to think of it as a sort of "variable inside a variable", depending on each specific pass-thru, like you said.

Tess315 said...

memphish
That does seem to make sense. Richard, Tom and Ben leave the island and as far as we know they don't have any problem with time when they do.
I'm not certain that Frank stayed completely on course which may be what caused the time difference of more than 31 minutes.
But then you could wonder if there is a place that you go through that could take days or even up to years to get through. But not seem that long on the journey.

2costa said...

tom richard and ben might have an easier time keeping the right bearing leaving the island underwater in the sub. The way the timeline is, locke blowing up the sub prolly is what made tom so pissy in through the looking glass, he seemed like he was really questioning ben's leadership, right before sawyer truly proved that "this aint over zeke"...

It is the only Standard Model particle not yet observed, but would help explain how otherwise massless elementary particles still manage to construct mass in matter. In particular, it would explain the difference between the massless photon and the relatively massive W and Z bosons. Elementary particle masses, and the differences between electromagnetism (caused by the photon) and the weak force (caused by the W and Z bosons), are critical to many aspects of the structure of microscopic (and hence macroscopic) matter; thus, if it exists, the Higgs boson has an enormous effect on the world around us.

As of 2008, no experiment has directly detected the existence of the Higgs boson, but this may change as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN becomes operational. The Higgs mechanism, which gives mass to vector bosons, was theorized in 1964 by Peter Higgs

I've got a question for the Dark Tower fans in the crowd. Has anyone ever heard if Lemony Snickett, the author of A Series of Unfortunate Events, took Count Olaf's eye tattoo from the Dark Tower series? I did a quick wiki search and didn't see anything, but as I'm reading both of the series right now, it immediately came to mind. I should finish Wizard and Glass tonight, maybe tomorrow depending on how my pre-game prep works out.

Hey all, I've just beena lurker for the past few days but I had another thought and the other thread for the Lost Community Podcast was disabled ro something, so this is the only place I can voice this theory:

So I mentioned that there were six Valenzetti numbers (Hurley's Numbers) and six people make it off the island (The O6). Well, I was poking around Lostpedia and I stumbled across the article concerning the Science Expedition Danielle said she was on:
There were six people on it. (Who were lured to the island by the numbers in the first place)

Well, the whole Time Loop theory somebody brought up in the last thread said that the show's sum could end up being "Can these people beat fate"? I brought up a similar notion, as that maybe each member of the O6 represented a number or something and they each had some degree of control over the power of fate?
And maybe the six people on the science expedition who turned OFF the numbers broadcast (why were they broadcasting in the first place?) made it necissary to take six people off the island to compensate for the disruption of the numbers caused by Danielle and her group.

I dunno, that thought is a jumbled mess, but I hope you get my point and sorry again that this has absolutely nothing to do with Carrie.

Which is a good book.

memphish said...

I like it The Roog. And don't worry about posting non-Carrie things here. This is the current thread.

But back to Carrie. I finally listened to the podcast yesterday -- great job David and Melissa Lossa. I like the Juliet is Sue Snell comparison, but that's one of the things that keeps me from liking Juliet. She, like Sue Snell, helps the LOSTies from very mixed motives, and I think more with an eye to feeling better about herself than from really helping people.

I think this is especially the case in her interactions with Sun. Like Sue Snell, she thinks she's helping Sun, but the main person she's trying to help is herself. I think Juliet has convinced herself if she can save Sun she'll earn some redemption for herself. (Yes, I'm still mad Juliet outed Sun to Jin.)

Kate's "helping" her mother and Jack is similar as well. Kate like Sue picks a solution to help that is one she herself would want someone to provide her, but not what the subject of her help (mom and Jack) actually want or need.

Melissa_Lossa said...

memphish - I just remembered that there are some references to Harry Potter in the Dark Tower series, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was a connection to Lemony Snickett as well. Never having read those books, I wouldn't have caught an references.

Capcom said...

I like that too Roog. When Jack and Danielle turned off the signal, and took her tape out as well, Danielle said, "We won't be needing that anymore." Whether she meant her tape or the transmission (set up for the numbers) or both, I don't know. But when she said that, it just stuck in my mind that maybe they would need it later. You know, the way things happen on TV (but mostly sitcoms, I admit): as soon as someone says, "That will never happen," then of course it happens.

Also, if someone has still been monitoring the VE transmission (probably the off-island DI/HansoOrg's last com link to the island, after the purge) when it stops, maybe someone's going to notice. That, plus the possibility of someone getting the messages that Locke might have sent out when he was playing chess.

So anyway, what you said Roog goes with my waiting for the transmission poop to hit the fan eventually. If it's not already, with the Freighter action. :o)

memphish said...

ML, I was more wondering if Lemony Snickett (or rather his frontman) ever said he took the eye tattoo from Farson. I'm only through book 6 of 13 in Lemony Snickett. I'm reading them when I get them from the library for Kiddo and I'm trying not to read ahead of him. I think from the stuff I saw without trying to see too much on Wikipedia I'll get an explanation for Count Olaf's marking before the series ends. But I couldn't help thinking everytime I saw Farson's "sigul" in Wizard and Glass of Count Olaf and his tattoo. I believe Wizard and Glass was published before The Bad Beginning, so it could have served as inspiration.

i had a thought, after 4x2 and 4x3, charlotte obviously knew that Ben had a spy on the boat. when she was traded for Miles and went back to jacks camp with daniel, why didnt she mention to dan that she had seen ben, or fail to mention that ben had a spy on the boat? When she called regina to see if the chopper had made it to the freighter, she never mentioned that there was a spy on the boat. Maybe this ties into how captain gualt doesnt seem surprised when sayid tells him about mike.

2costa said...

or maybe it ties into the way frank says to hang up if minkowski answers the phone or how frank has never mentioned the pilot to any of the 815'ers. Frank has the manifest memorized but nobody on the freighter bats an eye at his lie that desmond was an 815 survivor. Let alone the fact that naomi had a picture of desmond, so wouldnt they know who desmond is?

Capcom said...

All good Qs 2costa! There is a lot of conversation blatantly missing from LOST this season, as in other seaons. But it's more obvious as things are revealed in S4, that they are not being spoken about by the islanders. Sometimes it is very difficult to believe that someone has not gotten back to wahtever group and said, "Can you believe what I just found out?!" I think that we should call this, "Missing Dialogue". Or, DMIA. :o)

maven said...

Capcom: Love DMIA! LOL It is sooo frustrating sometimes when the characters don't seem to communicate like "normal" people. I'd go screaming into the group and say: "Guess what I just found out!!!!" We do know that most of the characters on the show are major secret keepers and all seem to have their own agendas.

Capcom said...

That is true Maven! They are a bunch of mysteriosos(sp?). And like 2costa said, not even Charlotte said, "I found Ben!"? Highly unlikely, unless TPTB have a mighty good reason for it. Maybe she wanted to keep the reward away from Miles? The "3.2mil" bounty that Ben knows about perhaps? That Miles also wants all for himself? :-B

msnbc.com's gossip column posted this today (and yes, I read the gossip column - *blush*):

When Charlie went to his watery grave on “Lost,” Dominic Monaghan lost more than a steady gig. Leaving the show’s Hawaiian shooting locale meant leaving behind his co-star and girlfriend of three years, Evangeline Lilly. After a brief split, Star reports the “Lost” loves are now back together. “They never stopped loving each other,” a source told the magazine. “They decided to take a break, but it was really hard on them both.” The couple remained in close contact and eventually realized they were meant to be together. “It was as simple as that.”

All together, now: Awwwww.....

Capcom said...

That's nice news Melissa. I saw somewhere (maybe TMZ? Equally as embarrassing, heheh) that they were seen together again recently a couple times, and I was hoping that they would get back together. Dunno why, but they are just a cute couple I guess. :-)

bigdog said...

Some random thoughts. I have been watching Daybreak and Quantum Leap. the first episode of QL gave a simple breakdown of time travel. take a string one end is your birth the other death. if you make it a circle you have your life in a loop. if you ball the circle up you have different parts of your life touching each other. Which is how he leaps backwards and forwards. They also made a quip about God trying to correct things in the past and good vs evil.

I really cant articulate what i want to say about that based upon LOST but i immediately started thinking of our beloved show. and how time travel factors in and who the heck are Adam and Eve.

lost2010 said...

If you make it a circle, and put a ball in the middle (let's call it a constant) the ball will keep the string from getting scrunched up and touching each other. - - - at least, that's the closest I've come to being able to cope with time travel as portrayed in Lost.

Tess315 said...

maven
Thanks for the link.
That would be great if ABC agreed to another hour of LOST!!

maven said...

Lost2010 and Bigdog: Thanks for the "string" theory of time travel. It definitely helps to have a visual in my mind to try and understand it. The ball/constant part makes sense to me.

2costa said...

i was watching 4x1 earlier, i never noticed that jack, even though he seems to be completely on the ball, adds some vodka to his morning orange juice while he's watching hurley's high speed chase. I guess its a little nod to the beginning of beardy jack. It goes with my theory that jack is an alchaholic off the island, but is cured on the island. Before he went to the island he was a lush in thailand, but on the island he has all the drugs and alchahol and heroin statues and they never show him indulge? It may also point to christain having been on the island before and thats why hes a lush...

Capcom said...

Right Bigdog! I too have been thinking in terms of the way it was explained on Quantum Leap, since the implosion and Des first went time tripping. That's the only way that I have been able to hold it together in my head, especially since the goings-on in S4. I think I mentioned it way back when, but I don't think that any one picked up on it at the time.

Could be, 2costa. Is there are reason why Jack is one big giant alkie hypocrite? Although he was right to permanently get his dad out of the operating room till he got sober.

memphish said...

What LOST's opening could have looked like.

Nice time travel take Bigdog. In Slaughterhouse Five Billy Pilgrim can only travel between his birth and death, not beyond them, and I like that as a time travel rule.

memphish said...

Oops, I also meant to say that the balled up string analogy reminds me of the tesseract analogy in A Wrinkle in Time. There they held two corners of a napkin. With the napkin extended the two corners are a long way apart, but the idea of a tesseract was that you could bring your hands together to connect the points and get there quickly. And with tesseracts it worked for both time and space.

Amused2bHere said...

In Quantum Leap, Sam had Al as his constant. Quite convenient, don't you think, that Sam could have his constant holographically follow him around?

Makes sense to me!

2costa said...

it was funny how desmonds buddy in boot camp was named billy, sort of like how billy pilgrim discovered kilgore trout's "elders of tralmafradore", which parralelled his unstuckyness, from a porn mag of his bunk mate in a military hospital, mike and alvar reminded me of that as well

Capcom said...

LOL Memphish, Wiliam Shatner gave that example of a wormhole with a slice of pizza (or was it the paper plate) on that History Channel show about how William Shanter changed the universe (or something to that effect). :o)

Good call on Al being Sam's constant, Amused! Heheh, I wonder if the QL peeps thought of it that way.

Capcom said...

That 'What if.." video is hilarious Memphish! Almost Miami Vice-like.

lost2010 said...

I always thought Al had the much better form of time travel. He got to holographically hop around the universe and then with a blip from Iggie or Ziggy or whatever his name was - he was back home.

2costa said...

i think al could only go where sam went, so he couldnt just go places alone in the past...i believe sam's body was back at the lab in the future..

2costa said...

iggie was the computer right??

lost2010 said...

I wonder if this is the right crowd to ask - - -There was this show I've been trying to remember the name of. There was a group of people - one was like an archaeologist type and then there was a soldier and one that was more like a cowboy or something and there were two women, I think. And they were in this world where there were pieces of past times sort of sprinkled all over the place - I always got the idea it was an island but it may not have been. I keep wanting to call it Land of the Lost but that's a different show. They lived up in this treehouse like thing because monsters would come try to eat them occasionally. It was a little like Lost but really really cheesy. But they'd like encounter the Incas or the Mayans - lost civilizations or something from time to time - and occasionally it would be some historic figure that had disappeared - I want to think Amelia Earhart was there for a while. But I can't think of the name and every time I try to google to find it I just pull up Lost and Land of the Lost.

And the only other clue I have is that for a while in the late 90's it came on tnt in the mornings - early - I'd have it on while I got ready for work and I had to leave the house by 7:00 then I think.

I don't need to know for any particular reason, it's just that I'm starting to think I dreamed it.

lost2010 said...

2costa - I think you're right about Sam's body being back at the lab. But they would have Al show up places in that time period where Sam wasn't now and again - because he'd stand around and say stuff like " Hurry Sam. . . ." remember?

bigdog said...

2costa - computers name was Ziggy.
And the body back in real time was the body of whomever sam replaced. I have only watched the first two episodes but Al seems to work with the replaced person to fill in his memory. another thing he described was that time is always expanding but not infinite.

Was Quantum Leap a popular show? it looks like it was on in the late 80's. i was just watching cheers and the cosby show back then.

amused great observation on Al being Sams constant.

Capcom said...

Quantum Leap was really popular when it was on, it went on for a few seasons, and is continually syndicated on various stations from time to tim. It was made by the same guy who made JAG and NCIS (one of Lost2010 and my faves :-). He really has a nack for making shows that appeal to men and women simultaneously.

Lost2010, it does sound like Land of the Lost..Sareesatakkaaa!!!!! :o) Anyway, I'm getting a sort of picture in my head of what you might be thinking of, but it was aired in the 1980s I think. Did you use to watch it on the old Nickalodeon getting ready for work? They used to play some really great old TV shows in the 1990s in the early a.m. that I also used to watch getting gready for work. Eating breakfast with Mr. Wizard before going to work in a lab...it doesn't get any better than that. :-)

lost2010 said...

It was a cousin of Land of the Lost - same type setting - but more adult in content. The people in it were continually falling in love with people who died tragically. People were always dying. And there weren't any kids in it that I remember. And the archaeologist guy was always making stuff like the professor from Gilligan's Island. Ugh. I want to think it would come on right before one of those channels ran Buffy reruns. TNT maybe?

lost2010 said...

Capcom-the only thing I can remember is that there were 3 men and 2 women-one of the women was a native, and one man was the financier, one an archeologist (the older gentleman), and one was a "rough guy". It has been so long, I know I would recognize faces, but names escape me. (sorry*)

In case anyone is interested, Sawyer840 has posted the next ABC promo to be aired (with stills following), and also a vid that Jeff Jensen took of his visit to the LOST set. To me it wasn't spoilery, but then again I have become a bit lax in my spoiler sensitivity and allow myself a few minor ones now. Jensen isn't allowed to film anything secret, so there are no secrets revealed in his vid IMO. He does film a messy cottage, but does not say why it's messy. He also shows something about a drawer which probably doesn't mean anything, accept for that the props people might be very tidy. So, if you don't want to see even anything as minor as a messy cottage and whose it is, don't look. If that kind of thing doesn't bother ya take a look, as he talks to Sawyer and Ben, which is fun.

http://sawyer840.blogspot.com/

I think that you might want to go there 2costa, cuz it seems like you allow the same kind of teeny tiny spoilers that I do. :-D

Capcom said...

Jensen's article about his trip is up at EW as well. Be warned, it is verrrrrrry spoilery. But Fox does say that the last eps of this season are "packed with plot" and "it's payoff time". Awesome.

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20190415,00.html

maven said...

Capcom: Thanks for all the spoiler reviews! I saw that Doc Jensen is up in my alerts and I just knew once I checked in here I would find out whether or not I should read it. I think I'll pass on it, although it's sooo tempting! LOL

maven said...

FYI: In the recap of last night's American Idol on EW this was said about David Cook showing his palm at the end of his song Tuesday night saying "Give Back": And if not for David C.'s palm message, we wouldn't have this brilliant comment from reader Anita: ''For a second, I thought the scrawling on David Cook's hand would say 'Not Penny's Boat.''' (Hmm...could David C. be the lost DriveShaft brother? I'll leave any crazy time-traveling, network-crossing theories to Doc Jensen for now.)

Thought this was funny.

Capcom said...

Right Maven, the Jensen article pretty much lays out huge hints on the structure of things that are going to happen in the final episodes (and some of the future season) without actually saying it, so if you don't want to see that don't go there. I don't even know if his article can be pared down to post on our Spoilerfix site, it's just that full of hints and things. I know that some people don't want to know anything, so it's something to stay away from if so. If not (like me now), it's really gooooood.

Capcom said...

Okay, I read the first page, and here's what I can pare it down to, without spoilers:

Life on the Oahu set of Lost isn't always a day at the beach.

**********

You'll start seeing it on April 24, when Lost returns with the first of five fresh episodes that will wrap up its buzzy, strike-abbreviated fourth season.

Page 2 is not so bad...here it is with spoilers deleted (BLEEPS are spoilers):

Camp Locke is actually Camp Erdman in real life, a YMCA facility on Oahu's North Shore. On this rain-splashed afternoon, a couple dozen day campers sit on the grass, waiting to watch Lost blow up one of their cabins. As the...BLEEEEEP...the man who plays con-artist bad boy Sawyer, Josh Holloway, gamely takes questions. One boy shares how his mother, a big Lost fan, talks about the show so incessantly that he has to cover his ears and beg her to stop. The kids laugh, and so does Holloway, but the camp counselor is embarrassed. ''Now, remember,'' she scolds. ''Respectful questions.''
The stars of Lost have heard worse, especially last year when they were put in the awkward position of answering harsh criticism about how Lost had lost its way. ''When you came out here last season, I remember I didn't talk to you,'' Andrews tells an EW writer, ''because if all you have to say is something negative, why talk at all?'' Asked where he thought season 3 went wrong, Andrews smiles. ''Well, I wasn't in it much, so that's flaw number one, without sounding ridiculously arrogant,'' laughs the actor, whose Sayid was truly underutilized. ''A lot of us didn't know which way the show was going, and I'm not sure the writers did, either. They seemed to be meandering in the dark. But it's good now. We're on track.''
So how did they find the light? By negotiating the death of Lost itself. Last May, the show's guiding hands, Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, reached a deal with ABC to end the series in 2010 after three 16-episode seasons; as a result, Lost's storytellers have been able to bring structure and focus to their saga. It began with last year's bravura finale, which brought the promise of rescue and introduced ''flash-forward'' storytelling into the mix. Fox — who was the only actor besides Evangeline Lilly (Kate) privy to the episode's it's-not-a-flashback twist — recalls barely being able to keep the secret from the rest of the cast. ''I knew it would take Lost to the next level,'' he says.
Season 4 has gone even further with…BLEEEEEEEEEP! Front and center are the Oceanic 6, a privileged clutch of castaways — Jack, Kate, Sayid, Sun (Yunjin Kim), Hurley (Jorge Garcia), and baby Aaron — who have somehow, someway escaped the Island. ''I think this flash-forward business is a stroke of genius,'' says Emerson. ''I think everybody here feels that we are now a more mature show, that we are now a show for grown-ups, because we're going to see that like in life…BLEEEEEEP!

Page 3(I guess that there is a lot to se even with spilers removed):

At the very least, Lost has become a show no longer dogged by skepticism that its producers lack a master plan. ''The question of 'Do you guys know where you're going?' kind of evaporated,'' says Cuse. ''People are no longer fearful that they're going to be led like lemmings to a cliff edge and plunge off.'' Nobody is more thrilled than the cast; across the board, their enthusiasm — and, in some cases, relief — is palpable. ''Now, the story carries everything and we're just players in it, which I like,'' says Holloway. ''The writers can be concise. I like that, too.'' Adds Fox: ''Our writers have always said we needed an end in order to start ripping. Now, we're ripping.''

This isn't to say that season 4 has been perfect. After hitting a high-water mark with ''The Constant,'' a deftly plotted, unabashedly romantic time-travel yarn that ended with Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) finally making contact with soul mate Penelope Widmore (Sonya Walger), Lost slowed the pace and muffed some plays. A trick ending — She's in the future! He's in the past! — to an otherwise powerful episode featuring Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and Sun alienated some perplexed fans. And the hyped-up return of castaway traitor Michael (Harold Perrineau) defied continuity logic and generally failed to meet expectations. Still, these are minor concerns compared with past infractions such as a guest turn by Bai Ling and last year's awkward introductions of — we hesitate to even bring up their names — Nikki and Paulo.

Ironically, season 4's overall strength and sophistication may have renewed Lost's creative mojo, but it has also sealed the show's rep as an intimidating weekly TV commitment. Viewership has steadily declined throughout the season, from 17.8 million for the season 4 premiere to 13.4 for episode 8. When the show returns April 24, it will air after Grey's Anatomy, at 10 p.m., and while it may get some draft from the hospital hit, it's a less-than-McDreamy hour for a series that demands maximum alertness. But ABC Entertainment president Stephen McPherson says that even though he'd ''love to see the show grow...the reality is that the numbers are pretty good.'' And he's as excited as anyone about the new direction. ''Lost has established itself as one of the great shows of all time. I'm proud that by agreeing to end the show, we have freed them up to do what they want to do.''

Page4)here's where it gets really dicey):

And what they'll be doing is kicking things off with a meaty sweep of story. In addition to being...BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP. Sayid's romance...BLEEP. According to Lindelof...BLEEEP...the smoke monster's...BLEEEEEP. And Cuse says a major story line will begin for...BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP...that sets up the next few episodes — and the next few years, too.''

"BLEEP"...will be followed by a...BLEEP for Jack. ''We're starting to close the loop on the end of last season,'' says Fox. ''Jack in the future is a man marked by weakness, but the Jack of the present is strong. You're going to understand...BLEEEP.''The last three episodes include...BLEEEEEEP-FOR-THE-FINAL-200-OR-SO-WORDS.

The last two paragraphs are very explicit, so fuggettabouttitt if you are 100% spoiler free.

Not sure if this was mentioned yet...

I don't know if anyone was watching Attack of the Show (AOTS) last night, but they said that Carlton and Damon are in negotiations with ABC to add a fifth hour to the end of the season or perhaps even earlier than that so they wont have to break up the season finale. The problem they are having is that ABC has scheduled a bunch of shows to all end around the same time and they do not want to have LOST run over this date of seasons ending....

I say screw ABC and give us our extra hour.

Ditto Ded, season-schmeason!
