Haven't had a chance to listen to the new podcast, but with four-ish weeks to go 'til new Lost, I'm betting there are some wacky theories getting thrown around!

Anonymous said...

The podcast is great (listening to it now), and I'm going through Lostpedia whilst doing so. While perusing the annals of Lostpedia, I noticed something about the Valenzetti Equation, which involve Hurley's numbers. These numbers are described as "the core values in the equation that represent humanity" or the human factor, etc. Well, I noticed that there are SIX numbers, and SIX people make it off the island. Just a thought, a kind of crazy theory if you will, but...what if each member of the Oceanic 6 represents one of the numbers? I mean, the Valenzetti equation supposedly equals the end of Human existence...what if there are six because each one of the O6 represents one of the numbers, and these six can change/ alter reality in some way that changes the equation, or maybe these six are the only ones who can act against the equation?

Just a thought.

Re-printed from previous Post (thought it more appropriate here):
Great podcast guys. You always sound like you're having a fun time!

Like your take that Oceanic 815 landed in the middle of a war...one that's been going on for a long time...maybe even since Black Rock. I don't know if we have all the info yet as to if this war is worth fighting for. Obviously, Ben and Widmore think so!

I think Libby was "haunting" Michael because he totally did not intend to shot her...it was almost a reflex action. She is part of his guilty conscience. And Ben was testing that conscience to see how guilty he was by setting up the fake bomb with the cartoon flag. He needed to know how far he could push Michael and manipulate him.

I agree that it is possible that Tom could have switched the gun that jammed on Michael. What I don't understand is that people in NYC can just waltz into a pawn shop and buy a gun without any ID or waiting period.

I'm saying that the guy in the bed next to Michael could have been Tovard Hanso...the relative who auctioned off the ledger. He could have been ill in 1996 and needed the money for treatments (that didn't work in the long run). Also, there would be a family resemblance to Alvar.

BTW: That "Valis" book is really strange so far.

Great job guys... yet again.

Libbidy Cricket...lol

Yes it looked alot like it was supposed to be Queens, I have had friends who had places that looked like that, If I had to guess I would say a back entrance... not the front door as well.

Meet me in the city, I love architecture in the city and I have been to very strange little parts of the city that STILL look like that alley...
They do exist...lol

I totally thought of the Barton Fink reference when I saw the episode... but thaught I was just jumoing to conclusions.

Caught the Kurt ref, but never read the book so I didn't make that connection, great find, havn't seen anyone talking about that... great job guys.

Arturro... is that a "Overboard" reference starring Goldie hawn and Kurt Russell...lol

Don't you think that the Widmore people would have been wondering why there was a guy taking pictures of there mass desicration. More fodder for wether or not Ben was behind the Freckage.

I still think that the Skeet shooting scene was to illustrate that Reamy is a very good shot, although there is no way you could snipe someone with a MP5.

If it is Reamy, what if he has already been to the Temple and has now set up an ambush for Ben, who they expect to be heading to the Temple at some point...Hmmmm???

Calls... I hate that your Christian...lol... j/k
Seriously... I am just kidding. No hate mail please... lol

My problem with the Freckage is that at that depth the pressuer alone would have destroyed the bodies. The Oxygen in their blood would expand to great size and rupture the flesh like a balloon popping... so the caller's point is very valid.

I think the bomb could have been real. With some kind of transmitter or cell phone or PDA or Laptop... you could easily change it from a bomb to a joke. Flip a switch if circumstances change and you will get a second chance later... this to me sounds more like the way Ben would plan it out.

Yes we got confirmation... but apparently we weren't supposed to...lol

C-ya and Namaste.

FYI: I just saw an ABC promo for an enhanced (pop-up) version of "The Beginning of the End" airing at 9pm Thursday. I believe we haven't seen this episode enhanced yet. At least, this is something!

I was listening to several podcasts last night, this one included, and I heard someone mention something about the Island possibly being a "God Seat" or a source of power on Earth. This could possibly explain how Ben and/or the Island have such a far reaching influence and why Ben covets his position so much and why Widmore wants to take it for himself so badly.

On a similiar note, I was reading "Valis" and I came across a passage discussing "theophanies" which is basically when God's normally hidden nature imposes on this reality in some way and intentionally or unintentionally draws attention upon itself. Kind of like giving evidence to God's existence. The passage reads:

(After a lengthy overview) "Because a theophany is an in-breaking of God, an in-breaking which amounts to an invasion of our world; and yet our world is only seeming; it is only 'obvious structure,' which is under the mastery of an unseen 'latent structure.'"

So...my question is: Is the Island one GIANT THEOPHANY?

I also find the mention of time being space and space being time very interesting and the notion that time doesn't actually pass but the environment is constantly, if minutely, changed to give the illusion of passing time.

I'm not sure if any of this relates directly to Lost, but I can definitely see how the writers were influenced by this work. I think it's brilliant.

Later--Ant

Wow only 6 posts and they are all great! I'm looking forward to the podcast. Like Erich, I'm taking my time on them given the hiatus. I'm already moaning that there is nothing on TV tonight.

The Roog -- great catch with 6 numbers and the O6. We've had weeks to come up with this, but this is the first I've seen of it.

I like the idea that Tom gave Michael a gun with no firing pin because that echoes back to what Danielle did with the person who gave her the music box. I can't remember the name. I'm slipping.

Ded, I'm with you that if you're the person digging up the graves it's easier to take a photo of it than if someone else was doing the digging. I also agree about the Freckage not looking right, but I'm willing to give them a pass on that one.

Thanks for that info on the enhanced episode Maven. I saw it was airing and I wondered if it was going to be enhanced. I'll have to tape and watch later because that's a b-ball night.

Antecedent -- good stuff on theophanies. One Biblical example of the a theophany is the being Jacob wrestled with before he met back up with his twin Esau. I'm not sure LOST will go so far as to have an actual big G God appear on the Island, but I think you could argue the various manifestations like Jack's dad are a type of in-breaking of one dimension into our dimension. But who knows, maybe it is theophanies that explain some of Jacob's back story.

ive been harping on the fact that claire has a chip in her head for a while now, you know ben wouldnt want her to get off the island and have someone else find the ben chip. i also like that O6 valanzetti crossover. I still think its important that all the adult members of the Oceanic 6 were either on the warph or on the sailboat during the purpling, it has to mean something...seems like hurley is gonna save aaron and the reason he has to will shed a lot of light on jack and hugos post-island guilt from what i could tell from the trailer after last weeks episode. Seems to me Charlotte and Dan, were preparing the island for a mass invasion while in the tempest...

2costa said...

I think its important to note that harper was hanso educated, seems to fly in the face of the notion that the others are not dharma, maybe harper is a holdover from prepurge, but maybe it shows the connection of Ben to the hanso foundation, maybe the purge wasnt a rebellion, maybe it was hanso sanctioned. Maybe all of the recruits like mikhail were sent by the foundation, post purge

Erich said...

I know it's old-ish hat by now, but I highly recommend the new OLP. They confirm some verrrry interesting things, especially for those taken to theorizing about who else might have been affected by coming from or going to the island (ala Des 'n' Minkowski), as well as a surprisingly candid "Apparition, Real, or Smoke Monster" list of island events/visions.

Details on the Valis podcast to come later. :)

Drat! I'm going to miss the "Carrie" podcast! I'll try and send an email in to you ML.

the roog: Good catch on the O6 and there being 6 Valenzetti numbers. We know that Hurley was very involved with the numbers (and considers them a curse), but anyone else in the O6?

Melissa_Lossa said...

Oh, maven - we'll miss you! Send me an e-mail with your thoughts, and I'll be sure to get them in. :)

Well, maven, we DO know that the numbers appear basically EVERYWHERE in flashbacks (but not so much in the FF, I've noticed.) Like, dates, license plates, addresses, phone numbers, etc. I mean, they don't effect the others as much as Hurley, by any means, but the numbers to show up a LOT in the flashbacks.

I have to agree that the podcast was a riot this time.

I also listened back to the pre-show pilot and a lot of the things we discussed got blown out of the water by the episode.

I'm afraid the Book Club podcast has been arranged for the only day I can't make, but never mind I'll try and get some thoughts together.

Ange said...

Hey gang...just stopping by to click the "email comments" button and say hello. I've got the Podcast set for the commute this morning. Also, I totally agree with Erich, the OLP made me go AHHHHHH. Short, and satisfying!

As for Carrie, well 5:00pm isn't doable, but I'll e-mail you Melissa or sheesh maybe even finish the Bullet Post I started on the book way back when ;). I loved that book!

I've enjoyed reading everyone this week. A little thing called MCAS is currently sapping every second of free time I have until the end of March, but I'll be back after that!

Great thoughts everyone! :-D Good stuff to consider.

A lot of people have mentioned that the O6 except for Aaron were all far from the Swan when it imploded and that perhaps that's why they are the ones able to leave the Island. I'm starting to like that idea better because it explains why none of the redshirts gets off the Island. It bothers me that 6 out of 40 people get off and hey, they happen to all be people we "know."

maven said...

If we are looking for something in common for the O6 (except maybe Aaron), then the fact that they were all far from the purpling might be it (Kate, Jack, Hurley were on the pier and Sun and Sayid were on the boat...although that raises the question why Sawyer wasn't part of the O6...we do know he didn't want to go, though). They didn't have any exposure during the purpling and could safely leave the island without any of the side effects.

Melissa_Lossa said...

erich - you were right about the podcast. Their list of what was monster, apparition or real person was pretty good. Although I forget - did they mention harper?

2costa said...

i think that there was something about sawyer being in france in one of his files from last season, Im thinking that he will be Bens con man off the island, which could shed some light on his whole pacemaker con and why ben seemed to want to get sawyers approval as a con, so he isnt one of the O'6 because then he couldnt assume differnt identities, where as sayid is always honest about being an oceanic 6 during his missions. This is not to say sawyer will leave with the rest, but maybe being far from the purpling is a prerequisite to being able to come and go from the island, Jin was also on the sailboat so there is got to be some splaining to do

Capcom said...

That's a very good idea 2costa. Maybe Sawyer would choose to stay on the island (if the Oz police figured out that he is a murderer, which Ben could know) so his bennies for staying might be that he can go into the world once in a while anonymously like Tom did, and not have to worry about being a fugitive.

i want to know why nobody ever mentions that charlie was still at the swan when it imploded, he had just lost his hearing and eko ran over to him, then the next season he was back at the beach, it was odd that eko was so messed up but charlie and locke were seemingly fine...

Capcom said...

Hey, thanks 2costa, that's awesome!!! I'll give you credit on my post. Thanks also for the info on his tattoo in the other movie. In "Mystery Alaska" he always had at least long-johns on, in the TV version that I saw. :o)

Capcom said...

BTW, we talked a lot about the seemingly inconsistent differences between how Locke, Charlie, and Eko were affected by the blast way back when. It was pretty confusing, and I don't think that we came up with any solutions.

2costa said...

a few observations.

1.A lot has been made of alex having some kind of ear piece when the sniper shot down her mom and karl, but i think it is just a decrative braid.
2. I rewatched kevin johnson, and ben is indeed in his wheelchair when he radioed mike on the freighter, so that might help put the timeline into perspective, which seesm to point to toms throwing around the pigskin with jack after he visited mike in NY
3. Capcom upon further research, kevin(keamy) the actor does have a bear paw tattoo in life, but the compass like shape around it is a lost addtiion, so it seems the maxwell group logo is back in play. I beleive the macaw and other symbols are also for the show, my best guess is the actor already had a bear paw, and the producers, muck like they did with jacks tatoo added to it to give it lost mythology meaning. Althought keamys(kevin) tattoo may have started as a native american black bear paw, for the shows purpose it may well be a polar bear paw, as i said before, mittlewerks cover story for the virus was it was coming form native macaws. Pretty slick of the producers if you ask me to put a compass around the bear paw and add other symbols to give it a show meaning...

memphish said...

I liked those Godfather comparisons too Cody's mom. I'm recording the pop-ups and will look at them Friday. Maybe we'll get some good Jacob's cabin info.

Capcom said...

Interesting 2costa. So maybe my investigative tattoo reporting will not go unwarranted. Oh well, anything to pass the time during the break. :-)

BTW, didn't TPTB say on an OLP that Maxwell is not canon, and was created by the game peeps? Someone clear that up for me if I don't have it right. Tx.

2costa said...

well the paired hummingbirds as far as I can tell are the native american version of a yin yang. I wonder why they outsourced to that point in find 815, i mean minor details thats fine, but a whole shadowy group(maxwell group), whats the point of that

2costa said...

keamy having a polar bear track would also fit with his boss widmore having the polar bear picture on his wall

Capcom said...

I hope that we get a pop-up version of "Kevin Johnson", but it will probably just say things like, "Michael used to be on the island"..."Walt is his son"..."Michael crashed on the island with his son Walt on Flight 815". :-p

Capcom said...

Right 2costa, a lot of people were wondering why TPTB would let the game guys do that. I mean, if they wanted to create side-characters of no consequence to the show that's one thing, but to create a new factional dimension to the plot is weird.

Black Swan said...

memphish, definitely let me know if anything juicy comes up with pop-ups on jacob's cabin!

Since I think I have the hang of entering a link, I found this post about "Who WAS the real Kevin Johnson?" here quite interesting and something I don't think has been raised here at TLC.

capcom, I went to your Lost blog to see what you were talking about with the tatoos and I must say, I enjoyed all your posts (especially the kitty with gun and comparisons of hospital man/hanso ears... lol). I'll have to visit over there often!

Happy Enhanced Lost Day! (At least it's something!)

Capcom (and 2costa): Checked out your blog and the tats of Keamy. We know that everything means something on the show, and originally it was thought that one of the tats was similar to the Maxwell logo (which is not supposed to be canon per TPTB). They just might be the actor's personal thing. But, as usual, it's fun to speculate! Keep up the good work.

Capcom said...

Thanks Codysmom and Maven! :-D

Black Swan said...

Capcom said...

Yeah Codysmom, that's one of the greatest of all online vids! When we took the nephews to the zoo recently, we bought a plushy prairie dog just so we could twist his head around and go "Dun-Dun-Duuunnnnnnnn!" :-D

2costa said...

i wonder if that missing piece where jin freaks out on the golf course is related to him not getting off the island. He seems to be going insane, if youll recall sun got a shot of the green from julliette, as did jack and kate and aaron. I guess it could also tie to jin not being able to impregnate sun, golf as a metaphor for conception is pretty clever, like why cant i get this little ball to go in hole, why can i get one of my boys to swim to the target.

Weird thing i saw somewhere karl is wearing a hearing aid when he gets shot down.

I think the circle around keamys bear paw is much more of a compass pattern than a sun, imho

they just confirmed on the special lost that abbadon doesnt work forr oceanic, and they said the chalkboard behind hurley has a clue to abbadons true motive for talking to hurley, screencap of chalkboard anyone?

2costa said...

the igloo reminds me of the geodesic dome in the swan...

memphish said...

2Costa, I'd guess Abaddon's motive is to find/find out what Hurley knows about the Island. There's a palm tree on the beach, a boat in the water with the shark, etc. You know, Island stuff.

Everyone be careful out there. I think I just got spoiled on episode 9 centricity courtesy of a website that isn't usually spoilery. But this headline gave more away than I want to know assuming it's correct.

Tess315 said...

memphish
That's what I thought too the first time I watched it.
But to me the drawing looks like Michael's boat and maybe the Dharma shark that tried to attack him and Sawyer.
So maybe Abbadon is interested in someone specific. Like Michael or Walt, maybe Sawyer.
But it could be Michael's boat (if it is) represents the losties as a group.

maven said...

Well, it seems the only thing we really learned from this enhanced episode is about Abbaddon. We get confirmation that he is not working for Oceanic Airlines...duh! And the chalkboard is a clue. Maybe the shark "represents" the Dharma shark. Therefore, maybe Abbaddon has something to do with Hanso/Dharma on the island...seeking revenge for the Purge.

memphish said...

Sayid's Girl and Maven, I wouldn't read too far into the pop-ups. Remember most of them are at the level of "This is Hurley. He was on Flight 815. Flight 815 crashed on a strange island."

memphish said...

Jimmy Kimmel has extra enhancements from last night's LOST.

Has anyone checked out this time loop theory? I saw this mentioned last weekend, but I haven't dug into it yet.

Tess315 said...

memphish
You may be right. I know the popups are for the general viewer. But it could mean something more.
I mean we never figured out the H and O in the game of horse. I read in different places people thought it was a chemical reference and all sorts of different things. When it was simply a refernce to 815.
It's really hard to tell.

memphish said...

For the crafty types -- one combination of LOST and crafts.

Ange said...

Sayid'sGirl: I totally agree about the pop-ups meaning something more. Understandably, Memphish's point about most of them being very silly to people like us is true, but I think they do try to include at least one factoid every enhanced show for folks like us to go "OHHHHHH!" about.

So yeah the blackboard behind Hurley show us the island (plus shark), yeah Maven he may be working for Hanso. That would be cool IMHO.

The blackboard also has a ship/boat thing, could he be working for Hanso in regard to the Black Rock, or is he one of the people (or working for) that sent Danielle and her crew out on her "science expedition". Could it be possible that Danielle's boss and Hanso are the same?

memphish said...

I'm going to play Capt. Ockham (Occam) here. Abaddon assembled the Freighter team as we see in Confirmed Dead. I think if the boat is relevant, it refers to his interest in the Freighter. I still think it's just the Island generally. All those images link viewers back to the Island.

Tess315 said...

The reason I think it could be Michael's boat is because it's a sail boat. And the sail has an X on it which reminded me of the hole that was in the sail of Michael's boat. Maybe I should be saying raft instead of boat.

memphish said...

Couple of interesting ideas from the latest Lost Unlocked podcast. 1)Jin is killed on Island before the O6 get off and Jin's body is actually buried in that graveyard in Korea, but they are claiming he died the day of the crash so they could bring his body home. 2)The her that Harper says Juliet looks like is Olivia Goodspeed, Horace's wife and the teacher in Ben's first flashback.

jimmy kimmel pop -up was funny.
thanks memphish

sorry about the Vols, hopefully memphis will do better against MSU.

memphish said...

Warning -- OT basketball post.

Big Dog, I'm only sorry about Tennessee's loss because I had them in my bracket. I was a little bit in Dennis's position of could they both lose, but Hubby and Kiddo were truly pulling for them. Memphis is our family uber-pick for the tourney mainly because it would mean so much to the city. As a grad of UCLA, I wouldn't be opposed to their winning, and I've been a UNC fan since childhood. So given all that, my least favorite team ever, Kansas, will probably win.

Black Swan said...

Our local station put Lost on at 1am here since they had some local thing on at 9pm. I haven't watched it yet, but have it on tivo.

I'm so torn about tonight's MSU (my school) and Memphis game tonight.... DH has MSU winning the whole tournament on his picks and I have Memphis... lol I guess that will just make me happy either way? (I'm a traitor, like Sayid called Michael)

maven said...

I agree that most of the pop-ups seem so silly to most of us hard-core fans, but they do throw in one or two things that some of us go "Oh, yeah". I almost think they've scoured the Lost sites and are trying to correct something we fans are over-obsessing with. For example, they stated that the woman with the crying Dan was his caretaker and not a wife. And last night's "HO was 815" and not a chemical reference.

I think last night's Abbaddon reference with the chalkboard being a "clue" is the one important bone thrown to us hard-core fans. Almost like TPTB were saying "discuss" this for the next 4 weeks! LOL

Black Swan said...

LOL, Tenn losing screwed up my picks as well, memphish... but at least I changed it to a Kansas/Memphis final instead of a Tenn/Memphis like I had at first. (And I say I'm a traitor because I'm an MSU grad:)

Ange said...

Blackboard again, sorry I am stuck on it...
I wonder if Widmore sent Danielle on her "expedition" and then it would make sense that Abbadon works for him.

Also, I would assume Hurley drew that picture? Otherwise it means that there is someone else in that hospital that knows of Dharam, knows of the island, or has been there...because I don't think Hurley ever saw that Dharma marked shark? I dunno, maybe I'm thinking too much about it.

Capcom said...

I don't think that Hurley would have drawn that chalk pic, as he is averse to the idea of living near the ocean as per Abaddon's living upgrade offer. And, he's painting an eskimo pic -- maybe to push the island images out of his mind? He would probably not be inclined to put his unwanted memories of the island on the chalkboard. Just my guess. Could be wrong. :-)

Black Swan said...

I think Hurley drew the picure on the blackboard and that it depicts the false story of the O6.

There are waves and a shark ABOVE the land and palm tree. This makes me think of the Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami and it will be part of the fake story they tell. It would make sense that the freakage is found closer to the tsunami than the Real Island. So, their story is, first the plane crash- 8 survivors. Then they are on some little island that gets hit by the tsunami which causes the death of the other two by being taken away by the waves and/or the sharks got them.

Abaddon knows the story is fake, so what he is asking is are there any survivors of the war on The Island.

We need a word for the FAKE STORY of the O6.... skory?.... lol

Black Swan said...

also,

The tsunami being part of the "skory" would make the O6 world-wide celebrities.

This just in on DarkUFO: Is the Find815 game coming back?

memphish said...

Interesting Maven. That date is over a month old. Do you know if we miss it that long, or did it just appear?

Capcom said...

Wow! That would be cool if the game continued its narrative during the mini break. It would also give TPTB the chance to insert details about the lie connecting the tsunami to the freckage, so that the Baddies can say that the tsunami blew away all the evidence...in case TPTB didn't feel like wasting too much time on it in the rest of S4. Which I hope that they don't, if it is indeed their plan to bring it into the story. Didn't they hint at that a little?

maven said...

I just ran across this on Dark's site. I don't know how long this new thing has been up. I don't know if that appeared on the actual date of February 23rd. The time is very strange: 2:43AM (who writes down the exact minute?

We know that the freckage had to be in Dec. 2004. If Find815 is in sync with the time line of the show, would it take 2 months or so for Sam to get concerned that the world is forgetting about the fate of the passengers? This wouldn't really coincide with what is happening on the show.

maven said...

Oh, Jess, Ange and Fenris: We might have to ramp up Oceanic Conspiracies again! LOL

memphish said...

Oh Maven, good point about this messing up the timeline again! Does this mean the O6 don't reach the real world until after Feb. 2005? And of course, don't forget that find815 is NOT canon.

maven said...

I don't really think it's going to take 2 months to get off the island. Remember, Sun needs to get off in 3 weeks for the sake of little Ji Yeon! And I can't believe that it will take 2 months to reach wherever they reach in the real world (LA, Korea, etc.) I know that Find815 is not considered canon by TPTB, but it has to at least make a little sense in regards to what's happening on the show.

memphish said...

Silly Maven. You're believing Juliet. :-) She lies from force of habit. Okay, maybe she just exaggerates, but I did notice that her claims about pregnancy went from the women made it mid-way through trimester 2 to if Sun doesn't get off the Island by Week 11 she'll die.

LOL, Memphish! You're right, you can't trust anyone on that darn island!

An interesting observation from Ralph of the Dharmalars -- If the Island keeps Michael's gun from firing, did it keep the pens in the adoption lawyer's office from writing?

I guess that leads to the question are all the things they seem like coincidence that came together to get them on the plane was it coincidence, fate or the Island? And I guess this takes us back down the is there any free will left road. And also raises the question of whether or not Hurley was supposed to be on the plane given all the things that conspired to keep him from it, yet he still got on it.

memphish said...

Or is the case that you have to be on the Island before it can affect you? That's another idea I've heard bandied about. In that scenario it can affect Michael and Future Jack, but it couldn't affect the people before they crashed there.

memphish said...

Here's an article from a Time magazine writer with questions for hiatus discussion. I have not vetted the comments for spoilers, but the article is spoiler-free.

Amused2bHere said...

I don't think you have to have been on the Island for it to affect you. Ben indicated that he went and got Juliet ("after all I did to bring you here..."). I'm inclined to believe that there's some Island manipulation that went on in the selection of 815's passenger list.

Ive mentioned it before, but it has bothered me that there is just black smoke and no white smoke, with all the yin/yang dualisms on the island:adam and eve stones, backgammon set, chess, ect. Damon has stated that twin peaks is one of the inspirations for the series and how his dad had journals with clues, much like us losties get. Well as anyone who watched twin peaks could tell there was the dwarph who hung out in the freaky red room, to balance him out was the giant, there was also the white lodge and the black lodge. One of the revelations of the show was that the black lodge and the white lodge were "one and the same", which is the jist of the yin/yang, hence the speck of white in the black and vice versa or how the yin/yang as a whole is the universe or the world. Well the island is like that too, every character struggles with this dualism. That brings me to Meet kevin Johnson. As I mentioned the other day i thought the white smoke the enveloped mikes car after the crash didnt seem like ordinary radiator smoke. It didnt just stream off in a given direction, it lingered around the car, maybe the white smoke is part of how or why Mike survived that crash without a scratch. People have commented on how the island has a much longer reach then previously thought,i.e. it effects things all across the world, down to claires adoption papers pen to jack needing to be a hero rather than killing himself. What if the black smoke is on the island and the white smoke is off the island. I know im probably reading into things, but upon investigating the white smoke in meet kevin johnson, i found a set report from a few months ago that described the filming of the crash scene and it mentioned smoke machines making white smoke that created a fog around the car. Im curious if any of you have rewatched that scene and thought the smoke did a weird hovering thing much like the black smoke does, At first i thought it looked weird cause it was cgi smoke, but if they were using smoke machines, it might have been a combination of real smoke and cgi smoke, to me it would be an intrigueing thing if there was indeed a white smoke to balance out the black, would tie up some loose ends and give me some shiningesque(the kubrich movie , not the book) symetry, as any student of the film knows almost every shot is framed with perfect bilateral symetry, incidently the film was even cited by minkowski in this episode... food for thought

one other thing I'd like to add is the enhanced episode the other day confirmed that Abbbadon doesnt work for oceanic airways. Well this led me to think that its definetly not gonna be the freighter that saves the oceanic 6, maybe the boat itself will, but not the people aboard. I always thought it was possible that abbadaon worked for oceanic and somehow the freighter saved the six and thats why they have golden passes from oceanic to keep the island secret with their cover story, to me this seems to nudge us closer to seeign a connection between oceanic air and Ben, and even the hanso foundation. Since abbadon doesnt know the real story behind the cover story, think about it who has motivation to cover up the island and it wherabouts and its purpose, ben. I think ben will let them get off and make the deal to keep secret Im starting to think that Ben has been working directly with alvar hanso, and mittlewerk widmore and paik to a lesser extent are trying to subvert the foundation like in tle. this would definetly tie up a lot of loose ends, and would explain why, who looked like alvar hanso, was bunking with mike. Maybe alvar, kept the location of the island even form mittlewerk, remember in tle a lot of times they made a big deal to mittlewerk about where is alvar and questioning if mittlewerk really had the goods(as far as secrets of dharma and the island)His biggest proof was the super old alvar film. My point here is alvar's gramps found the island and i think alvar knows how to get there, so if that the case why all the drama with the helgus antonius and all that, because mittlewerk doesnt have all the secrets of the island, but alvar might? Which also might be a clue to why Mittlewerk kept alvar alive at all. not only does alvar give mitty his street cred he might also have some secrets about the island that hes kept close to the vest and mitty couldnt afford to take the chance and kill him...

Capcom said...

Interesting Dharmalar points Memphish! There is still wiggle room for the free will thing, even if there is some manipulation being done. Such as how Fate has a part of ruining the best (or worst) laid plans of mice and men, just as whatever the controlling entity of the Island does. We plan, and some things follow through and some things don't. But, I reckon that TPTB will reveal the Island forces to be more malignant than that.

2costa, I keep forgetting that you mentioned the white smoke around Mike's crash, I have to go back and look again.

Also, it is kind of unusual that in TLE we are introduced to a guy who is immediately missing from the game reality, before we even know him (Alvar). I hope that it means that Alvar will eventually be a part of the show, it would be awesome. Although I imagine that the whole Mittlewerk deal will just be too much to insert, and will be left to the story that the ARG put in our minds, for background info. :-)

maven said...

Thanks, ML, for the podcast update. I'm excited about David interviewing the author of LOST Mind Games! I just bought it and have been doing the puzzles. It's mostly the usual word searches and word puzzles but with all LOST sayings, words, characters, etc. It's great to work on it when you're in a waiting room waiting for an appointment!

Amuzed: I'm with you in that I believe the 815 passengers where on that plane for a reason and were manipulated to be on that particular flight. Somehow the island controlled the passengers to get on that flight. Jack made a scene to get his father's coffin on the plane, Sun changed her mind at the last moment to go with Jin, Hurley broke all kind of speed records for him to get on the plane, Sawyer was deported, Claire was manipulated by Malkin to go to LA, etc. Whether it's fate, coincidence, free will or island manipulation might still be revealed to us as the show progresses.

By having Oceanic Airlines give the O6 that Golden Pass leads me to believe that whoever "rescued" them could be the owner of Oceanic. It could be Widmore, Paik or even Ben and/or his backer. Or it could just be a company making a good PR move! LOL

Capcom said...

I agree, it's always seemed to me like the main 815ers were manipulated into being on that flight. Some people who oppose that thought really get upset about it for some reason. :-p

Scoutpost said...

Well I see that you guys already found the find815 stuff. Yeah the timeline continues to be a little off.

2costa said...

the smoke around the crash does seem to have sort of weird hovering properties, this is added to by the fact that the front windsheild is busted so the smoke is all around mikes body, my feeling is Mike chose such a deserted location so as to not take anyone else out with him, but how soon could the emts have found him. I think the writers went to lengths to show what a horrific crash it was and how little micheal was injured.
Another little thing i noticed was how when libby walked into mikes room she said"sorry to disturb u mr. dawson". Mike was groggy from the crash so it didnt freak him out that they knew who he was. Mike was missing practically the whole time that libby was with the fuselage people, if it was an apparition how did she know his last name? I still think libby may be working with hawkings, because she advised him against detonating the bomb.
another thing i noticed is when the real doc comes in she makes some quip about hearing someone scream, and then she looked over at the alvar looking guy and said" i certainly dont think it was him".to all you Alvar doubters out there, why would someone fresh from an auto accident be in a regular private room with a seemingly comatose patient? wouldn't micheal more likely be in an e.r. room or intensive care unit? The alvar looking guy would probably be in a rehab or long term care room? And if the alvar looking guy wasnt in a long term coma i dont think the doc would have made the quip at all. With no insurance i dont see how mike would ever get into a regular room. I dont know something doesnt add up and i dont think they would visually reference his bunkmate and have the doc mention him as well if it was unimportant. I hope the producers put the debate to rest or the enhanced meet kevin johnson sheds some light on it...

if youll notice there were some weird continuity issues, when mike sees libby there is no christmas tree in the hallway and alvars head is in a differnt position. If the the libby part is just a dream and mike doesnt know his surroundings since he is just waking up from the crash why is alvar in his dream or how is alvar in his dream?

2costa said...

not only is alvar's head in a differnt position he has the oxygen bag on his face the second time, if he is so comatose how'd the bag get to his face?

Those pictures are certainly interesting. I'm going to have to go back and rewatch the episode again now. I haven't had a chance to do that yet. If that's not a continuity error it has to mean something. I don't know what though.

Amused2bHere said...

If find815 heats up again, I wonder where they will take it?

White smoke, eh? hm. Could be something there...

2costa said...

i'd say it might be a continuity error, if just one thing was differnt, but not both. Not only is the tree not there then there, but the oxygen mask with the green strap in not on him then it is on him...

2costa said...

the vitals monitor is differnt too, there is more blue on it the second time they flash to the would be alvar or tovar

maven said...

You've done a very thorough job, 2costa! I was thinking that the fact that there's no tree in the Libby dream is because he knew Libby on the island when it wasn't Christmas time so that wouldn't be part of what he remembered about her. Re the other patient differences: It could just be a major continuity error, but one would think those scenes would have been filmed in one day at the same time. Why would there have been a monitor change? I could understand the face mask vs the oxygen tube error, but changing the monitor raises some questions.

Capcom said...

Interesting research pics on your blog 2costa, good work! Just remember that the two sides of a person's face have differences, and when you put the same sides of a person's face together (with side one reversed of course) they often look like an entirely different person. But, having said that, your Charlie overlay with the one side is a very compelling arguement. Especially if Charlie was already reaching out to Hurley, back at the cabin, it would make some sense!

I still haven't rewatched "Meet Kevin" yet, I have to do that today. We need a popup version of the last episode!!!! :-O

2costa said...

i rewatched the enhansoed version of the beginning of the end the other day and was even more convinced it was charlie with christain in the cabin. Like u said capcom it would make sense that hurley started seeing charlie after he learned he was dead. It will be interesting to find out if dave ever was a real person or not or maybe even the victem of hurleys tragi8c stairs accident. I find it interesting that dave was trying to get hurley to kill himself in the water by the island by jumping off the cliff, reminds me the way charlie died in water. Also reminds me of regina jumping into the water. If dave is on the same team as libby then it might make sense that he wants hurley to kill himself on the island to thwart bens ultimate plan, just like libby wanted mike to not use the bomb or how desmonds repeated visions of charlie's death pre- looking glass would have thwarted the freighter as well. If mikhail had not saved Naomi she never could have relocked the phone with minkowski, in order to send the fan four.
One thing from the enhanced beginning of the end that i didnt see emntioned is that the pop-up said straight out that Charlie at santa rosa was an apparition, which reminds me of how dave slapped him with the slipper on the island, just as charlie pimp slapped hurley at santa rosa. Another thing I noticed that bolsters that charlie was "real" was the fellow mental patient that came up to hurley and told him that that guy "charlie" wont stop staring at you(hurley). I think that santa rosa is a hanso hospital, and thats why the original numbers guy was there to give hurley the lotto numbers. It's why hurley's original shrink had a picture of the island on his wall and an oceanic like logo on his bookshelf, as also may tie to Harper having a hanso medical school degree on her wall. I think Abbadon wanted to get hurley out of santa rosa in order to interragate him because hurley is protected by oceanic or hanso while in santa rosa. Santa rosa being a hanso hospital may be why libby was there in the first place. Hanso foundation being in the hospital business may tie to mike's roomate in meet kevin johnson and his qucik recovery. obviously as evidenced by joops longevity, hanso has been able to export some of the islands mojo off the island. I think that maybe the reason libby only came to mike and not ana lucia is that only libby is working with hawkings. Maybe libby was already unstuck back at her first stint in santa rosa, maybe her knowledge of the future is why she took such a shine to hurley on the island or gave desmond his sailboat?

FYSB said...

Thanks for mentioning that find815 wasn't canon. A friend and I were discussing the implications of Widmore buying an old plane and digging up Bai Ling (hopefully) and others and the logistics of bringing all of that together in the middle of the Sunda Trench. And then we were wondering (much like LoCos) how they would account for the O6 being found on an island. Then it occurred to me that in find815, they were about to declare everyone dead and call off the search. So why would Widmore need to go to all that trouble? He would have known the search was coming to an end and all he had to do was sit tight and he could have saved a lot of time and grave digging. Sigh.

Capcom said...

Good point FYSB. Maybe it could be explained, if necessary, that too many people like Sam weren't going to take that for an answer, so they spent some time after the search ceased, to "stumble" on the freckage for the sake of looks. But like you said, thankfully we don't have to think about that too much since what TPTB said about it not being completely canon.

Tess315 said...

ABC is re running the enhanced version of Comfirmed Dead Thursday at 9:00.

FYSB said...

I would like my life to be "enhanced". I think it would be awesome to walk into a store and have pop ups to remind me of things to buy (this is the shampoo aisle, you need conditioner), or run into someone and have a pop up explain who they are (this is Mary Smith, she is married to your boss or better yet, this is Phil Johnson, you had too much to drink at a frat party and smooched him, that's why he's giving you the eye).

Tess315 said...

fysb
LOL
That would be great wouldn't it. I know there are times I could use it.

Capcom said...

Awesome thought, FYSB! It could go both ways too...if someone creepy saw you/me, the popup could say, "She knows you're a jerk, don't even think about it". :o)

2costa said...

for many of those same reasons, I think Ben was behind the freckage. I think Ben has the most to gain from the 815'ers being found dead and the search for the real plane being called off. I think as evidenced by abbadon in 4x1 not knowing what happened on the island, that ben and the 815'ers will defeat the freighter threat and ben will be responsible for the oceanic 6 being saved, but his price will be their silence and their fake cover story. I think that Ben is a tyrant and thats why charlie has "they need u" on his hand. the producers have said season 4 is how they get off the island, season 5 is why they had to go, and 6 will be what happens when they get back or something. So as was mentioned before season 6 will be in "real time", by this i mean it will be 2009-2010 on the show during season six.
i used to think it was mike in the coffin, but after meet kevin johnson i dont think mike will get off the island. I dont think kate would harbor any hate for hurley for choosing lockes camp, so i doubt it was hurley in the coffin, by kates reaction. If the guy in the coffin has a fake name, then how would jack even know who it really was?

maven said...

FYSB: LOL! I guess pop-ups would be much better than post-it notes!

Thanks for that link to the enchanced episodes, Cattygirl. Good to see that they are rerunning enchanced episodes. My casual viewer friends seem to really like them.

FYSB said: So why would Widmore need to go to all that trouble? He would have known the search was coming to an end and all he had to do was sit tight and he could have saved a lot of time and grave digging. Sigh.
I agree with what Capcom said about some pesky relatives or friends that wouldn't let it go and would keep searching or pestering to keep looking for the plane. Widmore (or whomever) wouldn't want to take that chance.

Cattygirl: I think it was discussed that the other patient could have been pointing out the guy further away and not who Hurley saw. Many people kept saying that Charlie had to be real if the patient pointed him out. But TPTB stated that Charlie was an apparition in one of the OLP.

2costa said...

and in the enhanced version maven it said charlie is an apparition.

did anyone ever mention that Elsa had a very simuliar bracelet to naomi, when sayid shot her in the economist.

I think people have dismissed the time difference on the island as meaningless as of late, but just because it is only a 31 minute difference doesnt mean its meaningless. As you pointed out before maven, the chopper with frank desmond and sayid didnt arrive for a day after they left the island.
it was weird how frank told miles to hang up if he got minkowski on the phone in the one episode, did he know minkowski was gonna start to lose it from talking to jack, or does talking to the island on the special phone start to unstick u, regina didnt do so well after answering the emergency line, or how frank took keamy or whoever to the island, I know it seems like frank is one of the good guys but i think he may not be, why hasnt he asked the 815'ers about the pilot.

i saw someone point out that 31 minutes if you do all the math would equal 7 or so degrees of the earths rotation, which might explain why the compass sayid had in season one was 7 degrees off of proper north. It makes me think the island is a steady 31 minutes behind real time. It would make sense that north would be 7 degrees off cause it wont be in that position on the compass for 31 minutes, make sense?

memphish said...

2Costa -- we made a lot of the similarity of Naomi and Elsa's bracelets at the time, but they have been clarified in an OLP. Elsa's bracelet is meant to evoke a remembrance of Naomi/the Island in Sayid's future, but that's all. There was not a person who gave a bracelet to each of them. Still no official word on who R.G. is though.

Did anyone else notice they have pop-ups during the NCAA tournament? I watched to see if I could learn anything from them to clarify what's happening on LOST, but no such luck. :p

2Costa, I also agree that we shouldn't forget that time difference, but I'm very unclear what to make of it. Did the rocket come unstuck in time for 31 minutes? Did it have a constant? I'm reading Wizard and Glass, the 4th Dark Tower book right now, and in it time is variable. The night lasts as long as Roland needs it to in order to accomplish his end. Which makes me wonder if that's what's going on. Some days are longer, some shorter depending on what the Island needs. That could explain some of those end of Season 2 episodes where it goes from day to night to day so rapidly. (Of course the monsoonal rain which caused them to alter their shooting schedules explains that too.)

Capcom said...

Right Memphish, that would explain that! That is still happening when they are walking long distances on the island, even in S4. They start off in daylight and the next scene is at night. Oh well, waddya gonna do in a one hour show. :o)

2costa said...

i thought it was funny how the sprinkler went on on the golf course after sayid killed that guy from his list, considering we always point out how it rains on the island when someone dies. i think its interesting that sayid works for ben in the future and sayid is one of the few 815'ers that hasnt had a daddy issues flashback. I guess mike as well, but it could be looked at that mike is walt's daddy issue.

i think abc released that blurb about 4x9 to stoke the fires of conversation during the hiatus, but i dont wanna speculate about anything thats smacks of spoilery. Is the official abc blurb about the next new episode considered spoilery on here, ive see it discussed on a lot of other sites and not as spoilery, but i like to discuss ideas with you guys. Based on this from the spoiler section
Contents of the ABC.com, AOL, and any other "Sneak Peek" scenes (often available on YouTube) ARE spoilers.
I'm guessing what you so deperately want to discuss is probably considered a spoiler.

I know how hard it is to want to post something and can't. I read something in the TV Guide but I didn't post it. I did share it with someone here via email. That person considered it OLP spoilery. But since it was about what's to come I didn't post it.
If what you're talking about is on the ABC website I personally wouldn't want to hear about it. Last year I started to watch the sneek peeks they had up but it kind of ruined the episode for me. I thought it showed to much. So I quit watching them.

I agree Sayid's Girl. I do NOT want to know what ABC wants me to know about the episode. After all they are the ones putting out the "SOMEONE WILL DIE!!!!!!" promos.

But on the flipside, I'll definitely check out the video OLP that's due out about a week before 4.9 airs. Yet I'll probably avoid the next EW article because Doc Jensen has been on set and has probably been exposed to episode 10 and 11 info.

I'll go to your site and check it out 2costa. At this point, I'm up for tiny spoilers of my choice, but not ABC's. I'm so sick of second guessing this show, that I've moved up to the next level of micro-spoileryness. :-p

According to yesterday’s news at the website The Smoking Gun, Lindelof had been arrested in Pasadena, CA for indecent exposure when he allegedly threw his shorts at officers... it went on to say the fine and the arrest were an april fools joke

im with you capcom, too much spoilery spoils the batch

Wow, considering the kidding around that TPTB of LOST do on a regular basis (especially on the OLP!), I bet that they are afraid to go to work on April Fool's day. It must be a crazy day with those guys. :o)

Ack Attack's Meet Kevin Johnson recap. Is it April 24th yet?

Thanks for posting the link Memphish, I couldn't remember where it was.

I'm number 78 now in the fantasy league - thanks for the heads up that it was updated.

Happy April Fool's Day!
(I'm not making any LOST-related jokes! There's enough going around!)

Congrats on your great standing in the League, Cattygirl! You now represent all of TLC. LOL

FYI, in the comments of Bigmouth's last post (http://eyemsick.blogspot.com) he gives a pretty good theory for the miscarriage problems on the island:

"Are you familiar with [the book] Darwin's Radio? The basic premise is that a retrovirus emerges that attacks pregnant women spurring speciation in utero. I wonder if the Island is similarly a fountain of evolution, which is why the mothers keep miscarrying..."

I think that he could be on to something, since the mother supposedly is rejecting the fetus, with the immune system attacking as well. If the baby has become an evolved species (or, the super-sperm are evolved, so it happens at conception) and it is alien enough for the mother's body not to recognize it and reject it, this could be what's actually happening.

Big gives a link to the book in case anyone's interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin%27s_Radio

heres a pretty interesting video essay comparing lost to the lost horizen books and movie. It's broken into three parts. Dont worry theres no spoilers. Its pretty funny the guy is an awful public speaker, but his dharma props are cool and he makes some good points...

Interesting vids 2costa! Nice that Dr.Chili gave Tommy (lostinshangrila.blogspot.com) credit for starting the Lost Horizon theory rolling. I haven't watched all of the vids yet. He's not too good of a speaker, heheh, but he gets an A-for-Effort. :-)

I'm listening to the latest Get Lost Podcast and they are discussing the whispers from 4.6 The Other Woman. You can check them out here. A couple of interesting things about them though is that people think they mention Sarah and her having another or an Other. And people have also heard the word "encantado" which means enchanted one in Portuguese among other things. If you want to listen to the discussion on the podcast it begins at approximately the 1:35:00 mark.

OT: Hey, Memphish: Getting ready for the big game this weekend? Where do your loyalties lie? LOL If UCLA wins it will be a great birthday present for me!

Re the whispers: I've listened to so many audio enhanced versions backwards and forwards, and I still don't hear most of the stuff others do! But, I do agree that they are there for a reason (as are most things in LOST).

Completely off-topic basketball post to follow. Feel free to skip. ;D

Maven, I'm pulling for Memphis. It's such a huge deal all around the city. People are driving around with flags on their cars and pom poms sticking out of their trunks, there are signs on almost every business and my son gets to wear his t-shirt to school on Friday which is a big deal since they normally have to wear collared shirts. It's also pretty much a one-shot since Derrick Rose has all but said he's going pro after this.

And on a very good note, they are playing at 5 pm local time which means I won't have to stay up until almost midnight this weekend. How Memphis ended up with the very last game 2 Fridays in a row, I'll never know.

Memphis is unusual as well in that most people I know, my father-in-law and a handful of others excepted, didn't go to college there. The city is full of Tennessee, Ole Miss and Miss. St. fans. But when basketball season rolls around, it's easy for the city to embrace the team no matter where your real loyalties lie. Memphis, both the city and the university, has pretty big chips on their shoulders. A major win would be good for both. So that's why I'm pulling for the Tigers, but I'm certainly willing to claim my Bruins degree should they prevail.

And even more off-topic, I'll definitely be pulling for the Bruins come Labor Day when they face Tennessee on the gridiron.

Argh - even when I have a big character moment, I can't get ahead in the fantasy league! I was so excited about the emergence of Libby, but her points were cancelled out by the fact that most of my other characters were not in the episode. I give up. :)

Melissa_Lossa said...

I'm about halfway through Valis - so far, it's not as painful as The Third Policeman, although it does have its moments.

Memphish - How are you liking Wizards and Glass? It's such an odd story to me, but it adds so much to the overall mythology. The new Dark Tower comic series covers many of the same events, and is just starting to fill in some more gaps. I highly recommend it, after you finish the entire series.

memphish said...

I'm sort of reading it in spurts Melissa_Lossa and mostly enjoying it. I like the backstory and I'll keep the graphic novel suggestion in mind. But, there's something dispiriting about reading 50-100 pages and still having so far to go! Especially when you have a pretty strong suspicion that things aren't going to turn out well given what you know about the present. It's a bit like watching LOST knowing what we know about the futures of the O6.

I went looking for Valis yesterday, but struck out at 2 bookstores. I'm not sure if I'll get to it before the end of the break. I may have to catch up with y'all on that one this summer.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Yeah, Wizard and Glass is a little frustrating to read. Especially after everything that happens in the third book, for everything to come to a halt while Roland tells this story seems strange. I did like learning more about Alain and Cuthbert, and the very end of the tale explains quite a bit about Roalnd's quest, but it takes a while to get there.

So far, I like Valis pretty well. I think the advantage that it has over Third Policeman is that there is more of an actual story behind all of the craziness. It grounds it a little better for me. It's definitely not one that you can rip through, though.

I don't know how you feel about reading books on line but dennis posted a link to Valis maybe a week ago. I'm not sure which thread it was in. Also thinbluemime has the same flash file at his/her site.
I printed it for my sister. She doesn't like reading on line.

memphish said...

Thanks Sayid's Girl. I don't like reading on line either. How many pages was it printed out?

Tess315 said...

I think it was 64 sheets. I printed on both sides.
Quite a few pages but I don't print that much so it was ok for me.

I just finished Valis, and it took quite a while for me to get into it. The first half is so bizarre and I didn't understand what the heck was going on! Toward the second half things get explained (slightly), and I ended up enjoying the book. Anxious to know what the rest of you think.

Capcom said...

Hey Memphish, are you going to post any more surveys on your blog? I'm sure that there are a ton of things that we could argue about one way or the other, during the mini break. :o)

Hi Ladies,
I've been reading Valis on line.It is harder than book form, but I've gotten through chapter 3.
B-ball;
It is great that Memphis and UCLA are still in it. It should be a great weekend. With 5 players going pro, I wasn't expecting too much this year from UF (stumbled in the NIT.)
My LFL rankings have clawled up to #917.We still have 5 action packed episodes to go,and then like in sports, there is always next season.

I'll be happy to post some more polls Capcom if you have any to suggest. You can get my email address off my user profile.

I do have a new post up about CS Lewis's book Perelandra and one in the works about That Hideous Strength. They aren't well reasoned theories or anything, but mostly just some passages from the books that remind me of LOST. You might want to give those books a try sometime Capcom. They combine some of your favorite things like space travel, philosophy and theology.

Capcom said...

I did try to get through that set of books Memphish! I think that I got through the first one, but got stuck on the second. I first read them back in the late-1970s I think, when I was doing a lot of scifi artwork, and it was very inspiring! Can't wait to see what you write about them. :-)
