Especially after everything that happens in the third book, for everything to come to a halt while Roland tells this story seems strange. I did like learning more about Alain and Cuthbert, and the very end of the tale explains quite a bit about Roalnd's quest, but it takes a while to get there.

So far, I like Valis pretty well. I think the advantage that it has over Third Policeman is that there is more of an actual story behind all of the craziness. It grounds it a little better for me. It's definitely not one that you can rip through, though.Melissa_Lossahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01978237889577633466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33710412.post-40638118907407038912008-04-02T14:04:00.000-04:002008-04-02T14:04:00.000-04:00I'm sort of reading it in spurts Melissa_Lossa and...I'm sort of reading it in spurts Melissa_Lossa and mostly enjoying it. I like the backstory and I'll keep the graphic novel suggestion in mind. But, there's something dispiriting about reading 50-100 pages and still having so far to go! Especially when you have a pretty strong suspicion that things aren't going to turn out well given what you know about the present. It's a bit like watching LOST knowing what we know about the futures of the O6.

I went looking for Valis yesterday, but struck out at 2 bookstores. I'm not sure if I'll get to it before the end of the break. It's such an odd story to me, but it adds so much to the overall mythology. The new Dark Tower comic series covers many of the same events, and is just starting to fill in some more gaps. I highly recommend it, after you finish the entire series.Melissa_Lossahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01978237889577633466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33710412.post-21956554192273204492008-04-02T13:53:00.000-04:002008-04-02T13:53:00.000-04:00Argh - even when I have a big character moment, I ...Argh - even when I have a big character moment, I can't get ahead in the fantasy league! F...Completely off-topic basketball post to follow. Feel free to skip. ;D

Maven, I'm pulling for Memphis. It's such a huge deal all around the city. People are driving around with flags on their cars and pom poms sticking out of their trunks, there are signs on almost every business and my son gets to wear his t-shirt to school on Friday which is a big deal since they normally have to wear collared shirts. It's also pretty much a one-shot since Derrick Rose has all but said he's going pro after this.

And on a very good note, they are playing at 5 pm local time which means I won't have to stay up until almost midnight this weekend. How Memphis ended up with the very last game 2 Fridays in a row, I'll never know.

Memphis is unusual as well in that most people I know, my father-in-law and a handful of others excepted, didn't go to college there. The city is full of Tennessee, Ole Miss and Miss. St. fans. But when basketball season rolls around, it's easy for the city to embrace the team no matter where your real loyalties lie. Memphis, both the city and the university, has pretty big chips on their shoulders. A major win would be good for both. So that's why I'm pulling for the Tigers, but I'm certainly willing to claim my Bruins degree should they prevail.

And even more off-topic, I'll definitely be pulling for the Bruins come Labor Day when they face Tennessee on the gridiron.memphishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11135806668363907263noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33710412.post-42099779240674278682008-04-02T12:22:00.000-04:002008-04-02T12:22:00.000-04:00OT: Hey, Memphish: Getting ready for the big gam...OT: Hey, Memphish: Getting ready for the big game this weekend? The basic premise is that a retrovirus emerges that attacks pregnant women spurring speciation in utero. I wonder if the Island is similarly a fountain of evolution, which is why the mothers keep miscarrying..."

I think that he could be on to something, since the mother supposedly is rejecting the fetus, with the immune system attacking as well. If the baby has become an evolved species (or, the super-sperm are evolved, so it happens at conception) and it is alien enough for the mother's body not to recognize it and reject it, this could be what's actually happening.

Big gives a link to the book in case anyone's interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin%27s_RadioCapcomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06841675195251354073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33710412.post-27691180363224531552008-04-01T12:31:00.000-04:002008-04-01T12:31:00.000-04:00Happy April Fool's Day!(I'm not making any LOST-re...Happy April Fool's Day!
(I'm not making any LOST-related jokes!
