Almost first!

happy St Patrick's!

glad to hear David A. told us of the cranky fanatic podcast himself.

Hey Dave, I tried to get in the gspn chatroom too, right after the episode, for the initial reaction podcast, but I couldn't get in for some reason. That would have been fun to run into each other there!

Good point about Sun having to keep Jin's non-death secret from Hurley, maybe that's a condition for her leaving the Island. After all, why wouldn't the O6 keep secrets from each other?...they always have, and the Others keep secrets from each other...

memphish said...

I think the O6 agreed with their rescuer that they wouldn't go back. That's why Jack was so adamant with Hurley that "we're never going back." I also think that's why Jack's guilt is building. I heard this on a podcast, can't remember which one, but I liked it. They think the Flash Forwards are going in reverse order, i.e. they are backing up to present day. So as LOST2010 suggested, the date farthest in the future is TTLG, The Beginning of the End pre-dates that, then the Economist, then Eggtown, and then Ji Yeon. The idea would be that by the time we see how they get off the Island the timelines will have merged.

Amused2bHere said...

I'm not sure I like that idea, but it does make sense, Memphish.

maven said...

Memphish: I did hear that FF thing about getting closer and closer to when they get off the island. It does seem to make sense.

Also, I think the "deal" made with whomever has many conditions in it...some of which concern never revealing anything about the island and never going back. But, who ever "they" are on the island that Charlie and Abbaddon seem so concerned about is eating away at Jack's guilt and probably the rest of the O6 eventually. If they reneg on their deal I wonder what that will mean for those on the island?

Capcom said...

I just watched the ep again, and now I don't know what to think. Because of what TPTB had Jin say in the tent ("I will do all it takes to get you and the baby off the island"), and the way that Sun acted at the cemetery, it seems to me now that Jin is really dead via sacrificing himself for them at all costs to get them off the island. Dang you TPTBs for confusing me!!!!!!

I also don't know if it sounds as if Hurley is glad that there are no other O-6s for Ji Yeon's trip to the cemetery. It could have been that he was glad that no one else like her family, or anyone who would know that they were O-6s, would be there to complicate things for the visit. Ah crud, I dunno.

maven said...

Another great podcast, guys!

David: I love your question as to why there are "6" that get off the island. Your theory that maybe those are only one who "could" get off the island without any side effects does make sense. Maybe more got on the freighter, but succumbed to the "cabin fever"?

I never thought the picture at the house Miles goes to in LA was Walt. I thought it was very similar to Eko's picture of his childhood. There might be a connection to that family and Eko's village in Africa.

Remember the freckage was "found" in the Sunda Trench in the Indian Ocean, and Jack says in his testimony that they crashed in the Pacific. It seems someone has a lot of 'splainin' to do as why there were 324 bodies on that wreckage and why there are 6 survivors (with 2 that didn't make it).

Capcom said:

I always interpreted Hurley's look that he was glad his Charlie "vision" was not there. He was probably starting to see Charlie in the strangest places, and was glad that Sun didn't mention him, and he didn't see him in Korea.

Hi, I'm a first-time poster, long time reader of these comments. I really like all of you guys and thing all of your thoughts and theories are great!

My one gripe about the podcast was the thought that the lady's house that Miles visits in his FB is Michael's. His last name is Dawson and that old lady has a different last name. Unless it's Susan's mother, I don't think she has anything to do with Mike.

Also...just a question, what does TSPB or whatever (usually used to describe what I think are the writers...) what does that mean? Just wondering.

Anyway, as I said, great theories! I can't wait until Thursday!

Ah! Thanks Sayid'sgirl about the whole "TPTB" thing....had me confused for a while...*Laughs*

But yeah, I agree, maven about that old lady being related to Mr. Eko. That picture on the wall did KIND OF look like something from his childhood...not sure where I heard that first, but I agree.

I know this is old news, but I decided I should probably state where I stand in terms of Aaron and Jin. I really think it's kind of dumb that Aaron might be O6, considering he wasn't technically on the plane, but I am in the camp that says he is. It only makes sense. As well, I'm in the "Jin is alive" camp. Making us think Jin is dead NOW, only to reveal he really ISN'T seems like a total MF that those TPTB (I'm getting the hang of this slang!) would do to try to get a "WHOA!" out of us. So that's where I stand on those issues.

Hey gang, just commenting so I can get e-mail comments. Thanks to Memphish I finally got that sorted out and its a great idea. Going to listen to the podcast on the way to work today.

Welcome back Memphish!

Welcome in general Roog!

Okay that's all :D.

memphish said...

Welcome The Roog and the other new people that posted on the last thread! Looking forward to all your thoughts in the future.

I've been thinking more about my idea that Ben gets the O6 off the Island under his terms and conditions. I think this may finally be the explanation for Jack getting off the Island. Hurley and Aaron too for that matter. I think Ben sends Jack off the Island because Ben knows Jack is the only person from Flight 815 he can trust to keep the deal. Jack is the "honorable" enforcer of the deal. Ben keeps Juliet on Island to threaten if Jack drifts and lets Kate off the Island to threaten if Jack drifts. Ben sends Hurley and Aaron away because they are "special" and a threat to his Island fiefdom. Saving Sun is one of Jack's conditions. I don't know how to explain Sayid yet other than Ben figures out how to turn him into his personal hitman.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Wow - I finally cracked 2000 in the fantasy league! LOL

My minor characters are killing me.

Zort70 said...

Memphish - You could be right, maybe Ben wins the "war" and makes a deal with Jack that if he wins then anyone who wants to can leave, and anyone who doesn't want to can stay in peace, but only if they do not talk about the island to anyone in the outside world.

Maybe Juliet stays behind as part of that deal and that is why Jack is so messed up later on ?

memphish said...

Of course Jack's doubly messed up because he's back in love with Kate by the time of her trial. It's hard to figure out how we get from the points we have now to TTLG. But then that's why we watch. :D

Good morning LoCos!

I recognized the name Abaddon from the Left Behind Novels and decided to dig up a little more on the Biblical references:

Abaddon (Hebrew אבדון Avaddon, meaning "destruction"). In Biblical references (Job 26:6; Proverbs 15:11), it comes to mean "place of destruction", or the realm of the dead, and is associated with Sheol. Abaddon is also one of the compartments of Gehenna.[1] By extension, it can mean an underworld abode of lost souls, or hell. In some legends, it is identified as a realm where the damned lie in fire and snow, one of the places in Hell that Moses visited.

In Revelation 9:11, it is personified as Abaddon, "Angel of the Abyss",[1] rendered in Greek as Apollyon; and he is described as king of the locusts which rose at the sounding of the fifth trumpet. In like manner, in Rev. vi. 8, Hades is personified following after death to conquer the fourth part of the earth.

Abaddon is one of the infernal names used in LaVeyan Satanism, and is first in the list—only as it comes first alphabetically—and means "the destroyer."

I don't know where you heard that it's 2 hours this Thursday. In the past at 8PM ABC has put on the previous episode "enhanced" with pop-up info. This week they're running the new sit-com "Miss Guided". I'll miss those pop-ups!

Hey, darkardvark...how did YOU do this week in the LFL? You were the best representative from TLC!

Tess315 said...

No enhanced episode this week? I was getting use to them. I'll miss it too.

It looks like most the questions have been asked (but not necessarily answered of course) from this weeks episode.

How about this one, was it refreshing to have a character, Captain Gault, give a straight answer to a question. Was that put in for the viewer that is fed up with not getting any immediate answers ?

Of course he could be lying through his teeth as the note says.

That was my understanding too, from the OLP. The finale will be two hours the first part on a Thursday and the second part on the following Thursday. That's the only way they could do it if they wanted to stay on Thursday night. Because Grey's Anatomy gets to have their 2 hour finale all together on one night.

memphish said...

The idea of the freckage is really bugging me. I was reading Vozzek's Things He/She Noticed earlier and that got me even more confused. Seems to me we've got 3 options at this point:

1) Ben staged the freckage; Ben's people slipped the coordinates into Widmore's search for the Black Rock plan; Widmore finds freckage, but then uses other info presumably from ledger to find Island.

2) Widmore staged freckage; Widmore came up with plan to find Black Rock and ended up finding freckage; Widmore's Captain Gault is lying to Sayid and Desmond as they are seeking the Island; Widmore's plan was to get Island, eliminate 815ers since they are already conveniently "dead."

3) When 815 crashed on Island, Orchid effect occurred and 1 815 ended up on Island with survivors and other 815 ended up in Sunda Trench with all dead. Creates the question who gave Christiane 1 the coordinates that would lead to this discovery. I don't think I'm buying this one though, because I'd think the pilot would have had a wedding ring on, not as Vozzek suggested there would be a pseudo-Frank flying 815.

I think there may even be a 4th scenario at this point. What if Ben and Widmore are working together. Ben is a sort of Karl Rove feeding Widmore information that allows him to amass a fortune (with his unknown to Widmore ability to time travel.) Widmore funds Ben and his pet Island projects. Ben helps Widmore by arranging for Desmond to get stuck on Island. When 815 crashes Widmore helps Ben by planting and discovering the freckage ending the search for 815 even though conspiracy theorists like Charlotte (and Capcom) aren't buying it. Then Ben loses Desmond who runs for the Elizabeth when the 815ers enter the Swan. Widmore's had it with this punk so he assembles this team to come take him out. So now friends become enemies.

It seems to me both Ben and Widmore have equal motives for staging the freckage, but they have to be tied closely together for Widmore's people or people led by Widmore to find both the freckage and the Island.

Sorry this is rambly and jumbled, but this was the best I could get it organizationally.

maven said...

Memphish: Any of those 4 options can pan out...as usual, we just don't enough info at this point. We don't know who to trust. We know not to trust Ben and we've been told not to trust the Captain. And Widmore is not a trustworthy character.

The question is how is finding 6 survivors of Flight 815 mesh with finding a plane load of corpses at the bottom of the ocean? Somebody has some explaining to do. How do they (who ever "they" are) sell this to the public who eventually dub them the O6? Unless, 8 of them happened to miraculously got out of the plane before it sank to the bottom and they swam over to an island, and 2 didn't make it...yeah, right.

Capcom said...

Sounds good Memphish. I just don't get the whole Bali-vs-Fiji problem. But any of those 4, I can see happening. :o) Just which one, fer crying out loud, TPTB?!

It really does seem possible at times that Ben and Widmore are working together, rather than at odds. Or, maybe they are somehow the Bad Twin brothers (but not twins) who are jealous of each other and each trying to amass the world's power for themselves. Oy vey.

Anonymous said...

Memphish:I like those four ideas and its almost impossible to guess which one it is until we get some further info.

So, is the upcoming Hiatus going to be like last season's?

Melissa_Lossa: Ok, I really look forward to discussing OM&M it was really good...

2costa said...

i agree memphis that widmore may well have been behind the freckage, why else would dan say its not his call if they get saved or not. Wouldnt widmore want to expose Ben for the fraud he is and show the freckage was fake, if he really wanted to turn the insland into dharmasic park? I do think that widmore knows about the time travel and thats why they are so tight with communications on the island from the freighter and have dan on their team and not surprised by minkowski and desmond, ray obviously knows something.

Zort70 said...

Melissa - Saturday afternoon would be fine for me.

Zort70 said...

Does anyone think that Widmore / Paik and Ben are the only parties involved, and that we will not get introduced to someone else that will have a major bearing on this ?

I'm probably straying into paradox territory here, but could the freckage be part of a time leap ?

I'm thinking - the 815 plane has crashed, Ben has done his thing with the Manifest to find out who they all are, and then sent someone leaping to arrange the freckage ?

If the multiple time line theory is in play here, then the plane and bodies could exist in both versions of the past.

I know this seems quite a stretch for what we have seen of the time shifting, but it's a pet theory of mine

2costa said...

zort i think that may be the case, there has to be a reason they showed us the orchid and its 2 number 15 bunnies. Fiji and bali being farther apart then i thought, probably does point to the freckage being a man made hoax, becuase the plane was already heading down, if some cashamir effect happening a duplicate plane would have landed very close to the island in the water. Maybe the freckage location was smudged so that nobody would look around the island. I remember that the audio form the beginning of 4x2 the people in the sub said their were a lot of anomolies in the water, but that may just be a red herring.

Capcom said...

Zort, if TPTB bring a third party into this mix, I'll kill'em!!! Seriously, the only other person that I want to see introduced at this point of confounding confusion, is Mittlewerk. I don't think that my brain cells or attention spand could take yet another mysterious faction coming into the fray! :-}

FWIW, on the subject of mass-gassing, here's something from UniverseToday.com: "On September 15th of last year, a meteorite impacted the Earth near the town of Carancas in Peru. The story made worldwide headlines when hundreds of people who flocked to see the crater reported getting ill. As it turned out, there were no mysterious space illnesses plaguing the population; the super-hot meteorite likely vaporized arsenic-containing water that was near the surface of the impact site, and onlookers and investigators breathed in the noxious gas."

Things that make you go hmmmmm.

Capcom said...

Erm, I meant span.

Capcom said...

BTW, R.I.P, Sir Aruthur C. Clarke. Another great inspiration of TPTB, no doubt.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Okay, gang - I'm just waiting to firm up some dates with David, but our two Book Club selections for the April Hiatus are officially Carrie and Valis. Get to those book stores/libraries!

In the real hiatus this summer and fall, I think we should pick up with the two remaining books that we missed last year (Of Mice and Men and Lord of the Flies), and then move into some season 4 books and any others we feel were left behind from the first three seasons.

I'll let you know dates as soon as we have them!

Scoutpost said...

Morning all!

capcom that's really interesting about that meteorite. So I guess using volcanic gases to eliminate people is not out of the question. :) or should it be :(

re: the freckage- this is really a confusing point for me. I just don't see how in the world Oceanic (or whoever) will ever be able to reconcile the freckage being in the Sunda Trench. You know if that happened in real life that the media and public would not let that rest for a LONG time. So the explanation has GOT to be good. I hope we get at least some of the explanation this season.

I think it's plausible Scoutpost! Especially if the hot lava hits some kind of tainted water source or water table (natural or fabricated), making poisonous steam...or some such configuration.

That's a good question. I'm really hoping we'll see Richard Alpert and the rest of the others who went to the temple soon! I don't think you could call them a new "third party", but I would love it if they have a "major bearing" on what happens.

I'm still wondering how they are going to reconcile the fact that there are supposedly six who survived flight 815 when the rest are at the bottom of the ocean dead in the plane (parachutes.... ejection seats, huh?) I guess it'll be such an interesting story that it makes them celebrities..

I still think the Temple is going to turn out to be another Dharma station. Safety, or possibly related to time travel, or maybe for some other purpose we haven't sussed out yet.

And I too think that there is a yet-to-be-revealed third party that is involved here. Something just doesn't compute yet, and I think this 3rd party is a key element in the equation.

This Saturday for the podcast should be good for me.
Melissa: no Tempest? aw shucks.

lost2010 said...

I'd be willing to take a stab at it. As long as it doesn't have to be plausible - just believable within the vaguest realm of possibility.

Let's see - plane navigation was totally screwed and they were no where near where they were supposed to be. The plane started to break apart midair but it hit the water instead. Due to water pressure there was no way to open the doors of the craft. But those seated near the middle were uniquely positioned to squeeze through the crack in the broken hull of the wreckage. The plane had been pressurized so maybe it's spewing air - like blowing up a balloon and turning it loose under water (ahem, I didn't say I'd take a believable stab at it). So about 8 or so make it through this crack and surface. We'll assume they had the presence of mind to grab their seat cushions and use them as floatation devices. So they bob to the surface.

Let's see at that point, they all link arms to try to stick together (Jack's telling the story so people will believe just about anything). They get caught in a current and carried to "AN" island. By this point, only Kate is conscious. She drags the 8 that are still together onto the beach. But 2 are dehydrated/injured beyond recuperation. The remaining 6 are cared for by Kate.

A man in a fishing boat, who happens to be named Benjamin Linus, happens upon them and carries them to Fiji.

I have an odd question for all the moms here:

When you were in labor did you (cry out for or think of) someone who was dead as if you forgot they were dead? I really wonder about this, I think it's more a literary device than an actual phenomenon.

When my second son was born I really wished my mom had lived to see him, but at no time did I ever think she was in the waiting room or anything like that. Maybe that's just me, but I'm not sure if pain of childbirth (or the drugs they give you) can have that kind of effect. High fever can, but labor pains?

anyone?

lost2010 said...

I just cried if I remember correctly. I think what I cried out was "EPIDURAL!!!"

memphish said...

I agree Lost2010. I was crying out "why does one side of me hurt while the other is numb," and "get that kid out of there," but then I knew where all my loved ones were at the time. I think as someone pointed out when the episode aired, as far as the medical and legal and any other genre show details go, LOST is saying screw 'em, we're just advancing our story. If you want to watch a dangerous birth ER is amazingly still on the air.

Beverly said...

The only thing I cried during childbirth was "I want some drugs NOW!". I wasn't delirious, but after I got the drugs (just demerol at first), I saw double for a little bit. But I was lucid enough to know that the nurse hadn't been duplicated by the Casimir effect or anything and that it was the drugs doing it.

I put this in an announcement post on the front, but there is NO enhanced episode of LOST tonight at 8:00. Instead, there is a new show called Miss Guided :P

There's an interesting comment in the TV Guide article:

From the start, Cuse and fellow exec producer Damon Lindelof insisted Michael would eventually return. "He was always coming back on the freighter," Lindelof says. "It was just a matter of [when] we were gonna reveal the freighter." The initial plan was the third-season finale, but Perrineau chose to sign on to the CBS pilot Demons instead.

If they had shown Michael in the S3 finale, then we didn't see him again until episode 7, people would have went bonkers wondering "when are we going to see Michael again?!?!?!"

Good point, Dennis! I wonder if we would have had more interaction with the freighter early on if they had gone with the original plan. That would have given this season a much different feel, I think.

I'm glad we didn't see the freighter in TTLG. It could have nailed them into even more casting corners since they hadn't cast any of our FFs at that point not to mention that strangely compelling Captain Gault. Now if they wanted to stick him in the coffin, that would make me happy since that's still my theory that it's Michael in the coffin.

It would have been interesting if we had seen Michael on the freighter last year. I wonder if they would have waited until this year to start the flash forwards?
I don't think they would have waited 7 episodes to reintroduce Michael if he had been in the finale last year.
Which do you think would be better the finale we got or seeing Michael on the freighter?
And if we had, had Michael would we have had a Jack flash forward? If not we wouldn't have known about the coffin. I don't envy Carton, Damon and the writers who have to make the decisions sometimes at the last minute.

VALIS is gonna be a tough read for the hiatus book. But I'll see if I can track down a copy and give it a whirl.

Side note: memphish already found it, but I've decided to try and get Entertainment Weekly to hire me (ha!) as their TV Watch writer for Top Chef. My first effort is up on my blog (and yes, memphish, it's finished now ;) ). If you watch that show, maybe have a read. I think it's decent.

Maybe. I think somethings were beyond their control.

Uh, I believe they paint their own dang selves into their own dang corners, with their own crazy dang stories. Heheh. :o) Although in their defense, they could not foresee the WGA problems.

If you are up for reading a book on the computer, you can read VALIS for free here.

Happy Last Lost Day for Awhile!
And also Happy Birthday to Hubby and Sun!

Since, it is hubby's birthday, the live podcast comes on at dinner time, so I don't know if I'll be able to be there at the beginning...hope to pop in later (and I'll still be able to watch Miss Guided! LOL)

Thanks for all the SpoilerFixed articles. You guys make Thursday's so much easier to get through. And thanks for the Valis link, Dennis. I requested it at my library, but while I wait for it, I can get started on-line!

Dennis, thanks for the link to VALIS online. I noticed a few weeks ago that ThinBlueMime has the entire text available on his website, but everytime I tried to post a link Blogger lost my comment.

I'm glad you have the magic touch, Dennis!

Enjoy guys! I won't have time anyway but I'd be afraid to watch even if I did. That whole - someone's gonna die in last week's promo was too much for me.

Evening guys and happy Lost day! I'm gonna try to be a part of the actual teleconference part of the podcast tonight, but its kinda complicated right now... But, I will definitely be part of it somehow, either in the call or the chatroom.

Happy Lost Day!

So I've decided I trust Ben. Widmore's an untrustworthy jerk and we were told NOT to trust the Captain by....I dunno who yet, but I' thinking it's Walt. I dunno, it makes sense to me. But yeah, I'm thinking that, for ONCE, Ben is not TOTALLY The bad guy here. Also, my money is on either Claire or Sawyer dying tonight. I hope I am wrong (maybe they'll kill Michael!) but I don't think I am.

Also, I'm not entirely sure who it was who said it, but maybe Ben and Widmore are working together in some way....I dunno, it makes sense, I guess. *Nods* That would be out of left field, for sure.
