Looking forward to the podcast.

DarkUFO has the next Fantasy League test. I had 305 points! Which just goes to show I have a lot of Tailies on my list.

Hey, guys - enjoy the podcast. Things get a little silly, so be warned! :)

If you haven't read the book yet, and plan to, I have two suggestions:

1) Do NOT listen to the podcast until you are done, because we talk a lot about the ending.

2) Do NOT read the introduction in the book, because this also gives away the ending. Really.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Here are the "official" questions that we discussed:

The Third Policeman Discussion

1) Does the idea of Omnium, the material that can be made into anything parallel Ben’s claim of the “magic box,” which can produce anything? Objects made from the Omnium couldn’t be taken out of the room in which they were created – does Ben’s box work the same way?

2) Assuming that the Losties are not dead and in hell, does the loop that the main character finds himself in parallel the time loop that Desmond appears to be in?

3) When the main character goes to find the box at Mathers’ house, he is confronted with the figure of Mathers. Likewise, the Losties often find themselves facing “ghosts” from their past both on the island and in flashbacks. Are the Losties paying for their past crimes the way that the main character here is?

4) de Selby is often said to have tried bizarre experiments in order to prove that certain of his theories are true. The policeman are also always taking strange readings and working on odd “patents.” Is this similar to the Dharma Initiatives experiments on the island? Are the strange stations and bunkers that the characters visit similar to the hatches and stations?

5) Time is often a theme on Lost. When the main character in the book goes back to his home at last, he discovers that nearly 20 years have passed since he left, although he has only aged a few days. Is this what is happening to the island? Does outside time move faster?

I highly recommend reading Ange's Lost Bullets post about this book. She has a lot of great points. I have been extremely busy with work lately, and I had a lot of trouble just finding the time and the energy to get through this book, let alone analyze it. Ange, your points were such a lifesaver! Thank you!

Melissa_Lossa said...

Okay, last post, I promise. :)

Here is the passage that I read at the end of the podcast (according to wikipedia, this passage was originally found near the end of the book, but was cut before publication):

Joe had been explaining things in the meantime. He said it was again the beginning of the unfinished, the re-discovery of the familiar, the re-experience of the already suffered, the fresh-forgetting of the unremembered. Hell goes round and round. In shape it is circular and by nature it is interminable, repetitive and very nearly unbearable.

Capcom said...

Hi All,

I haven't listened to the podcast yet (or read the book), so I hope that no one asked this Q already, but Melissa's Q#1 makes me wonder: if you went into the Omnium room and wished for a box of Godiva chocolates, and ate them all, when you leave the room would the chocolates leave your stomach? Cuz then you could eat all the chocolate (or other favorite food) you wanted to and you would never gain weight! :o)

maven said...

Listened to the podcast. The questions are great, as usual, Melissa_lossa. The three of you did a great job in relating the book to Lost. I'll try to add my 2 cents next week.

I got 10 points :( and hubby got 205 :) in the Fantasy League.

Melissa_Lossa said...

capcom - that's a good question! :) I actually wondered if you wished for food, and ate it all, would that make you weigh more, so that when you got back on the lift, it would crash to the bottom. I like your take better, though!

Melissa_Lossa said...

I got 100 in the fantasy league this time - that's ten times what I got inthe last round! ;)

Tess315 said...

I haven't listened to the podcast yet. My daughter's been sick with strep throat. She went back to school today. I have read the book and Ange's bullet points. I'm going to go listen to it now.

Nice Podcast,and review of TTP.
My first thought of Mathers ,was that he was like Jacob.(just kind of hanging out)Ange's Bullet points
was excellent if you couldn't read the book.
In the Lost Fantasy League,Jorge Garcia came in #1,this week;#38 last week. Not too shabby huh?

Capcom said...

Hope your daughter gets better soon Sayidsgirl!

Happy Halloweenie and All Saint's Eve everyone. I posted some Lost Halloween pictures that I made on my blog, "submitted for your perusal". :o) http://capcomslost.blogspot.com/

We are going to see "Nightmare Before Xmas 3-D" again this year, it's fun. And, I can't find my DVD of it. :-p

Ange said...

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Superman and a butterfly type thing just came to my door and that made my ENTIRE day!

Thanks for all the kind words about the bullets. The podcast certainly made me giggle. David's right I need to try to make it to at least one before February. I felt bad for poor Jess all alone in the chat room.

Per melissa_lossa's question #4: Are the strange stations and bunkers that the characters visit similar to the hatches and stations?
Anyone want to talk about the ceiling map? That was my AH HA! moment in the book.

maven said...

Happy Halloween to everyone!

The most interesting thing I noticed in TTP was that the author attended BLACKROCK COLLEGE! LOL

jess4ua said...

Hi everyone! I got 135pts this week. Not too shabby....

Maven- I totally missed BlackRock College. hahahaha!

Ange- OMG, you cannot feel sorry for me, when you are always leaving me stranded. LOL M!

She's taking antibiotics so she's starting to feel better. Your pictures are really funny.
I especially like Locke and "Patchy".

Sorry I missed the 'cast again. It's been difficult to keep my 6yr old away for an hour while "mommy's on the phone". (Yeah, I know: Blame it on the kid!) Parking him in front of a movie or game just isn't cutting it anymore.

Ok, enough of my excuses. I loved the podcast! You all sounded like you had so much fun. That was definitely the weirdest book we've read so far. I think it is highly suspect that Carlton and Damon say they've never read it, but they "know what it's about" and they "hear it's very good." (OLP 11-14-05) Um hm. I don't buy it.

I really enjoyed the discussion, folks. Keep up the great work and I hope to join you all for Turn of the Screw/Of Mice and Men.

Capcom said...

Thanks friends. :-) And you all must visit Jorge's blog to see his costume if you haven't already. I will not spoil it, but I wonder how the heck he got all of his hair into that thing?! :o)

Melissa_Lossa said...

We're having two podcasts this month, so hopefully some of you can make it. I LOVE talking to you guys!

ange - I'm with you on the ceiling map. There were a lot of things in this book where the comparisons were SO obvious, I almost hesitated to discuss them. As I was writing my questions, I was afraid that we'd have a really short discussion.

Are the underground bunkers like the hatches? Yes, yes they are. Next question. ;)

Melissa_Lossa said...

capcom - love the photos! Patchy is the greatest. :)

Hope everyone had a great Halloween!

Tess315 said...

Looks like the writers went out on strike. I wonder how long it will last?

Capcom said...

Yeah, I hope that all goes well with that. Aren't writers' strikes when they bring in the loser reality shows to temporarily take the place of the written shows?

2costa said...

i heard they might turn to fan fiction for plots

Tess315 said...

capcom
Yeah pretty much. They say it will effect the late night shows first like Leno and Letterman. I guess depending on how long the strike lasts depends on when we get the reality shows, sports, game shows, and news programs. I don't know if they'll continue to show the programs (Heroes etc.) they already have written then go to the reality shows etc. or vise versa. Hopefully they will be able to come to an agreement sooner rather than later.

we keep saying it: now may be the best time to put on those shows shot but not given a chance (*coff*DayBreak*coff*), or to replay classic shows like Twin Peaks for a new generation to enjoy!

Actually I hope they replay all the Star Trek series, Farscape, Firefly, Sliders, etc...we could have a SciFi bonanza!

Listening to the podcast and chiming in.

Vis a vis the Island/Smokey/Magic Box and Omnium -- one of the weird things about this magic box effect on the Island is what appears to be on the Island vs. what is actually on the Island. For example, Locke can actually walk. The drug plane and Yemi's body is actually there. Presumably Kate's horse is actually there because Kate and Sawyer saw it and Kate touched it. Cooper was actually there.

In contrast Jack's dad only appeared to be there. Jack was the only one who saw it despite the relative proximity of both Kate and Locke to the vision. When Jack tried to touch his dad, he moved before that could happen. This is also similar with what was happening with Yemi and the other drug dealers. They appear only to Eko.

So at a minimum there seems to be at least 2 different things going on vs. a single magic box effect. Or maybe David's idea that the settings aren't quite right is what's going on and Christian and Yemi can only appear to Jack and Yemi but not actually be because the levers are wrong or some such thing.

memphish said...

Q3 - facing their crimes. I agree that the characters certainly face their "sins" over and over both on and off Island, but I agree with Jess that the conclusion we can reach about that is clouded because of the death and non-deaths of characters. So for example, Boone lets Shannon go, but then doesn't die for several episodes after that. Ana and Shannon move past their issues and die basically immediately, Ana even more so though Shannon. And then there's the people who die with no "confontation" of issues such as the Marshal, Libby, Scott, etc. And then there are those who live like Kate well past her horse and Sawyer encounters.

It's hard to see how this has a logical consistency unless there is a "circle of hell" issue and these deaths are moving certain people up/down and others still have more work to do. Probably best not to think about this too hard.

memphish said...

Jess just blew my mind with her idea about putting people back in time. What if that explains why Kate is not in jail? That she was put back before she blew Wayne up?

memphish said...

Great podcast David, Melissa and Jess!

Maybe there's a third party lurking around somewhere messing with things. A Jacob hater that's sort of slinking around between the lines and twisting things all up or running their own version of how things are supposed to go on the island.

Wow, the similarities of TTP to Lost are fascinating!

Darkaardvark said...

Funny Lost shout-out on Robot Chicken (slightly crude):

The gist of the sketch was that the government had enacted new '*sshole' laws that prohibiting saying such things as:

-Did you know soccer is really called 'football'?

-Did you know they never actually say "Beam me up, Scotty!" on Star Trek?

-Heroes is a much better show, because they give you answers. Unlike Lost, they don't even know what they're doing!

(After each person said such and such a thing, the cops would burst in and violently arrest them)

Glad to see some people are on Lost's side, hah.

Sorry I've been so inactive lately...I've read Of Mice and Men before so hopefully I may be able to get in on the discussion this month!

TakesaVillage said...

Hi darkaardvark.I just finished reading Of M&M again after many years. There are things very Lost in it that I had forgotten about.Should be a great discussion.

Zort70 said...

Hi all I've finished watching the extras disk in the lost box set and the deleted scenes are the most interesting.

In my box set there was an extra set of extras, with two more deleted scenes, which revealed how Kate got the handcuff marks on her arms and where the ping pong ball came from.

There are quite a few 'hidden' extras on the disks but unless I've missed an important one they are mostly extra making of segments. Apart from the Room 23 video I mentioned before.

Zort70 said...

Have a safe bonfire night if you take part in such festivities.

Celebrating the burning of a 17th centurary terrorist (so the government spin would tell us !)

memphish said...

Alas Zort that's one tradition we didn't bring/keep here in the colonies.

Anyone know where I can see that Ping Pong scene? Probably DarkUFO. The handcuff scene is excrutiating. While I'm glad I know what happened to Kate's wrists I think I'm glad they left it unaired.

Zort70 said...

It's not that exciting believe me.

Zort70 said...

The ping pong ball scene that is, not the fireworks and bonfire.

Bonfire? off to google it...

oh, I see! It's amazing how educational this blog is! Google led me to several sites for the Bonfire Societies in Lewes, and Wiki filled in the rest. I recognized the story of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot from the V for Vendetta movie, but I didn't realize there was influence on Macbeth!

I guess I can go back to bed now, I've already learned something new today...

Hey, memphish - thanks for all of the kind words about the podcast. :) Hopefully, you can join us again soon!

Our next podcast will be some time next week, discussing Turn of the Screw. David, what day works for you? Tuesday is probably best for me.

travis said...

#1) The magic box is just a metaphor used by Ben! Richard and his fellow others kidnapped Cooper to get Locke on their side.

The smoke monster has more to do with all the weird visions and encounters (Christian, the horse, Yemmi, etc.) than the so-called "magic box".

travis said...

#2) What loop? Desmond's time travel seems to be a one time event. I'm sure Lost will revisit it, but at this point it's hard to tell what's going on with Desmond.

travis said...

#3) They are paying the price in one way or the other.

#4)

#5) No. People we encounter outside of the island during the island timeline (meaning not a flashback) like Cooper, Juliet's sister (via video feed) are aging at the same rate as the Losties. Naomi who drops onto the island, never remarks on the age of the Losties. Penny looks the same in the video feed as well.

travis said...

I think we will find in season 4, the same amount of time will have passed off-island as on-island.

memphish said...

At a minimum it seems Juliet thinks time is the same in both worlds. If there is a time secret, she's not in on it.

Ange said...

I hate Turn of the Screw...there I said it. I am on chapter 15 of something that should have taken me two hours tops to read. Anyone else feel this way? PLUS, I can really only find two ways to tie it to Lost and it's making me frustrated. I finally downloaded the mp3 from Librivox and am listening to the last half we'll see how that goes. UGH, one week to get my act together :S.

Also, travis said...#5) No. People we encounter outside of the island during the island timeline (meaning not a flashback) like Cooper, Juliet's sister (via video feed) are aging at the same rate as the Losties. Naomi who drops onto the island, never remarks on the age of the Losties. Penny looks the same in the video feed as well.

It doesn't have to be a drastic amount of time, it could be months or days rather than years. I know it's far fetched, but TTP, if we believe what the writers said, may be shining light on the show and time was certainly a main idea.

Also, it might explain why Mr. Alpert and Walt do not appear to be aging at a normal rate.

Capcom said...

Travis, if "The Box" is not a metaphor for a machine/wormhole/blackhole/whatever, what would it be a metaphor for? Hmm, that sounded a little like "how much could a woodchuck chuck"!

You have a point with #5 tho!

Capcom said...

P.S. You also have a good thought about Juliet and time Memphish. She seems oblivious to any difference in time on and off the island so far. And if there is a difference, she is going to be in for a big surprise.

Maybe if there is not much of a time-delta between on and off the island, and we do see big giant Walt eventually, perhaps he will have had to be snatched back from the future? :-)

memphish said...

I think the "lost time" anagram might merely refer to the time lost from your "real" life. It's hard to see other than time looping that at this point time is different on/off Island.

The real skinny on the strike and LOST:

So far, the news about what the strike will mean for Lost's return to ABC this winter isn't all that bad, but it could get worse if the picketing persists. According to Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse — who was walking the picket line Monday in front of Burbank's Disney lot with fellow EP Damon Lindelof — ABC will soon have eight episodes in the can that it can begin airing after the first of the year (ABC has yet to announce a start date, though it seems likely the show will return in February). If the strike is prolonged and the scribes can't get back to work writing the rest of the episodes, fans are going to be stuck with the kind of stunted season they were forced to endure last year. "It will feel like buying a Harry Potter book, reading half of it, and then having to put it down for many months," explains Cuse. "There is a cliffhanger at the end of the eighth episode. It will only be frustrating [for viewers] to have to step away from the show and not see the second half of the season.

"The first half of the season, like a good novel, sets all the events of the show in motion and the second half deals with the consequences," Cuse continued. "We're very proud of the first eight but it feels weird to have to stop literally mid-stream."

maven said...

Hey, gang: What with all the family and some personal issues, I haven't felt like posting for a while. But, I can't stay away too long.

I think LOST (and 24) will be in a lot of trouble if this strike goes on for any length of time. The time between writing a script and filming can be pretty long. So if the strike continues for months, it could put a damper on finishing season 4 the way it was intended. :( I'm sad for missing The Daily Show and The Colbert Report every day and the potential problems for some shows, but I can see where the writers are coming from. My dad was a long time WGA member, I feel that his work should be compensated via airing on the net (the sites get revenue from ads that we're forced to watch...not like on our DVRs). The producers playing "dumb" that this area is "too new" doesn't play with me, because they are getting revenue from airing full episodes on the net.

Ange said: I hate Turn of the Screw...there I said it.
LOL. I second the motion. What looked like a thin read, seemed to go forever. That Victorian style of writing is almost as complicated as Shakespeare...just say what you mean!

Travis said: #1) The magic box is just a metaphor used by Ben! I think we can all agree that there is not a physical box on the island that things pop out of when you wish for them. Not quite like Omnium. Ben was just using the metaphor of a box to convince Locke that the island can give him everything he is looking for in his life.

Ange said: It doesn't have to be a drastic amount of time, it could be months or days rather than years.
I agree that only a day could have gone by. People don't change physically that much in weeks or months. But it would be enough to get everything "out of sync".

Also for your FYI: It's seems DocArtz from thetailsection has quit as Administrator of the site.
Doc Arzt, the administrator of the popular Lost fansite Thetailsection.com, announced tonight that he is leaving his duties at the site. He had previously sold the website to BuddyTV, and was no longer its owner. In his announcement, he also noted his feelings about Lost and why he started blogging about it:
"I chose Lost as my topic because I hate TV. Lost is not TV. Lost is a great story. If there was any sense of purpose, it was in spreading that message...The growth of the site really took me by surprise. I never started it as a business, and I never anticipated the volume of traffic I would receive."
He cited personal and professional reasons for the move."

memphish said...

Hey Maven! Hope you and yours are holding up.

Interestingly just before DocArzt "resigned" from the Tailsection and Buddy TV he recorded a podcast with Jay and Jack for Buddy TV. (Yes, that Jay and Jack.) It was recorded several weeks ago, but just showed up this week. I don't know what is going to happen with Doc's (aka Jon Lachonis) section of that podcast if anything. I've also been hoping that affiliation with Buddy TV won't mess up Jay and Jack.

Now back to LOST. Nikki Stafford who has written 2 books about "Finding LOST" has a blog. Her most recent post has to do with a contest she ran about how you would get anyone who stopped watching LOST at Episode 3.6 to watch the DVDs and catch up. One of the winners compares LOST to Heroes and it's pretty funny. Check it out.

Hey Maven,
Good to hear from you.We have missed you.You often write that your Dad was a writer, and worked on various TV shows. My Dad was in the Stagehands Union, and worked in TV & Movies once the scripts were written.I remember him bringing home a script from a movie they were shooting.I don't remember what the movie was,but I loved how the script made it come to life.It was better than reading a book, because it was the total description of a scene.(script?)
Anyway the writers deserve all that is coming to them.

Happy Birthday Capcom!

W00T! There's a mobisode out! DarkUFO is on the hunt for video. I watched it on my husband's Verizon phone. I don't want to spoil anyone for the mobisode, but I will say it's not a S4 spoiler. It's a missing flashback moment that could have been, but wasn't, in episode that aired previously. And it's not a deleted scene either. It's new footage, but footage that chronologically fits into something we've already seen. I don't know if that will be the case for the rest of them or not.

I guess we might also assume that this means the 13 week countdown to S4 is underway.

Thank goodness for DarkUFO putting up the mobisode. (I have Verizon, but I'm not subscribing to the V-Cast!)

The only thing that that stuck out in my mind with that mobisode is the Watch. Very similar situation with Jin's watch from Mr. Paik. We all know time means something else on LOST. These watches tie in with that very well.
The scene doesn't seem "new" though...made especially for the mobisode. Are these supposed to be deleted scenes or new material?

ABC has updated the LOST website to make it look like the webistes of its other shows. I'm pretty sure it was outsourced to a non-English speaking country though as it says:

Stay tuned on February 2008!

Stay tuned ON February huh?

According to DarkUFO it used to say an actual date, Feb. 14, 2008 which is a Thursday. And it used to say 6/7C which is not a real time. I guess they put the person in charge of Nikki and Paolo's fake newspaper with the non-existent date in charge of this too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see LOST move to Thursdays since Big Shots is apparently stinking up the ratings and losing lots of Grey's Anatomy viewers. And so far they've supposedly been pleased with Wednesdays which have been drawing lots of female viewers. I would think a lot of female viewers fuel American Idol too so who knows if those numbers could hold.

I really hope LOST doesn't hold off until the 2nd week of February. Wouldn't that be wasting a week of sweeps? But it would put the finale airing May 29.

Also on the website is the credits for the mobisode. It says they begin airing 11/12 which is I guess the date they will begin airing on the website.

maven said...

Memphish: I saw that boo-boo earlier on DarkUFO. ABC must have the dumbest interns working for them! LOL

BTW: DocArtz did come back to post a call for a boycott of producers to try to help end the strike. He's calling for us fans to cancel our Season 3 DVD sets. I don't know...that would be very tough to do. (Personally, my hubby is looking forward to getting caught up.) I guess it would also entail not downloading any episodes of any show. I think it would be very tough to get 100% participation to make any difference.

memphish said...

I guess I could postpone my S3 purchase because I have it all on my DVR, but I'm already engaged in trying to be all ready for Xmas by 12/11 in anticipation of their release. Settle the strike people!

Zort70 said...

TaV, Season 4 will probably start a few days later than in the US, for season 1 it was 6 months after the US and the same for season 2, so I was watching season 2 while playing TLE.

The first half of season 3 wasn't shown at all until just before the second half, so I watched it initially on BitTorrent downloads.

Each of the episodes for the second half of Season 3 aired 4 days after the US.

Phew, I hope that's enough detail !

memphish said...

maven said...

OMG...the nightmare of waiting until the Fall of '08 or Feb '09! We can only hope this strike doesn't last long. Both sides seem pretty entrenched in their positions, and the news is not good today for a quick settlement. I definitely support the WGA, but it's sad how this affects so many in the business.

What do you guys think: Would you want to see the completed 8 episodes this coming Feb. or wait until all 16 are done and see them in Feb 09?

memphish said...

More from that EW.com article:

Also possibly impacted: the January launch of a separate Web initiative tied to the show; the creative details aren’t known, but it’s believed to tell a story that takes place in the Lostverse, similar to “The Lost Experience” of 2006. It's TLE II!

I'm for seeing the 8 episodes they have of Lost now. Then waiting for the rest whenever. We survived the 6 episode arc last year we can survive an 8 episode arc this year, if we have to. But I certainly don't want to wait til fall '08 or Feb. '09. Darlton doesn't want to do that. They're probably afraid of backlash like last year. But to me this is different circumstances. I've waited long enough a little is better than nothing.

I seen that about 24. Also Prison Break will be taking a break after this Monday's show instead of a four month break in Dec. It will return in Jan. American Idol is coming back in Jan. too. Doesn't it usually priemier in Feb.?
Looks like were in for a bumpy ride.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I can't believe they are delaying my beloved 24! Although, if this season is anything like the last, maybe they could use the extra time to prepare. :) Bet Kiefer's wishing he hadn't made that deal to serve extra jail time in exchange for working around the shooting schedule now.

I'm torn on Lost - I would hate to wait until 2009 for new episodes, but I'm not sure I want to go for the 8-episode season, either. Maybe they could finish all 16 by the spring, and premiere the season then, providing the strike is over.

Melissa_Lossa said...

If the season is delayed, we can add another couple of books to the book club. :) Anybody up for Our Mutual Friend?

Tess315 said...

I'd like to read that one melissa_lossa. If we need to extend our book club.

Ange said...

There are really a lot of books we could add...we could maybe do a theme and make it books Sawyer was seen reading. I'm up for some Are You There, God? It’s Me Margaret or Agatha Christie’s Evil Under the Sun.

Also, I did a bullets for The Turn of The Screw. It's not much but I tried.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Yeah, there's a couple of Sawyer that would be fun. I'd like to try the Agatha Christie, maybe Lancelot.

There's a great list from darkufo here: http://lostbooks.blogspot.com/

What do you think, folks? Cast your votes now!

TakesaVillage said...

I just finished Bad Twin. The Lost references alone, made it fun for me.

memphish said...

LOST and Book Dweeb that I am, I've already all of those, though I have not re-read Are You There God? It's Me Margaret. I really enjoyed both Evil Under the Sun and Our Mutual Friend, but the LOST connections are tenuous at best. The Washington Post book group did Watchmen. I'd recommend that. I also read Lancelot and frankly got nothing really LOST-like out of it, unless they are all in a mental institution.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Watchmen would be a good choice, definitely. I might also suggest The Dark Tower, although I really think that the Lost influences/similarities happen in the later books of the series.

Capcom said...

Too-bad-so-sad about the Evi and Dom news. :-(

memphish said...

I'm bogged down in The Wastelands right now ML. I think it has a fair amount of Lost relevance what with a splitting of time and time travel changing things. I've been trying to decide if Future Jack is Jake or Rowland going crazy with two timelines and with his trying to get back.

maven said...

FYI: E Online is reporting that Strike Splits LOST Season.

Scoutpost said...

Oh woe is me!!!! This strike has got to end. It's bad enough have to postpone a season but when they say that this might impact another TLE- now that hits below the belt!

I'm definitely for extending the book club. I am following along although I usually can't participate in the podcasts. I think the Watchmen would be a great idea. I've heard you can make a lot of LOST connections with it. I'm up for anything. HOpefully we won't have to extend it, or not for long.

What about Evi and Dom? Did they split up? And...
Happy Belated Birthday Capcom!!! :)

Capcom said...

Thanks Scoutpost, and Amused too!

Yeah, that's the rumor going around today about Evi and Dom, that Dom has been spotted getting cozy with some new dame around LA. :-(

Hey all. I'm not commenting on TTP, since I didn't get the chance to read it (and I'd still like to!).

I just wanted to make a comment about the webisodes (nee mobisodes). ABC appears to be releasing them on the website, rather than on Verizon's VCAST, as a subtle EFF YOU to the writers, and perhaps to Cuse as well.

The agreement between Touchstone and the LOST folks states that no residuals will be paid for broadcast on ABC.com, only for Verizon broadcast. ABC is releasing these segments when they are, in the manner they are, so that they don't have to pay striking writers one more cent.

If you want to show solidarity with the writers, you may want to consider boycotting the webisodes, and informing ABC you will be doing so.

You can go to this site if you would prefer not giving ABC any web traffic: http://abc.go.com/site/contactus.html

Scoutpost said...

In case you guys haven't seen it...
Dark UFO has a petition up on his site to sign in support of the WGA. There are already almost 14,000 signatures. Don't know if it'll do any good, but you can check it out.

Hey TBP! Long time no see!

Melissa_Lossa said...

memphish - yeah, Wastelands is kind of killer. Wizards & Glass moves much better, although it's almost entirely a flashback.

I like the idea of Future Jack dealing with two timelines, like Jake does.

memphish said...

The mob/web-isodes are on VCast. I watched it there on Tues. I think they'll air 1 week on VCast before they go on line.

If DHARMA made lobster bisque it probably wouldn’t be this good!

If Jacob told you to jump off a bridge would you?

Not a polar bear, but it’ll do.

Jess and Ange: I'm so envious that you two got together! Looks like you guys had a great time.

Hi, EF!

Amused2bHere said...

Happy Veterans' Day (observed) today! Honor and thanks for your sacrifice for our continued freedom.

I'm glad Ange and Jess got a chance to meet IRL. It looked like you had a lot of fun, gals!

My weekend was spent spiritually retreating with about 50 women in a cloistered environment for three days. No technology, no contact with the outside world, lots of laughs, tears, food and music. It was great!

Too bad to see the strike is still messing things up. I'm wondering whether or not to watch Ugly Betty on abc.com or not, I missed it Thurs night. Does that support the writers or does it undermine their position?

Hi TBP, EF and Village! Long time no see! And it's great to see Scoutpost around again too. (ok, Group Hug!)

Capcom said...

Hey Experimental, nice to see you again too!! :-)

Ange and Jess you both look great! And I was waiting for a Bruins pic to show up on the list. :o)

That sounds like a great time Amused. The women's group of my New York church goes on a retreat every January. I really miss it now that I'm down in TN.

Have a great week everyone!

memphish said...

A2BH, Glad you enjoyed your weekend. Fellowship time is always a good thing. We spent Saturday camping with 5 other families who all have boys the same age and who we go to church with. I too was internet-less which was bad because I wanted college football updates. But since my team ended up being creamed, not so bad after all.

As for the morality of watching new media during the strike, according to the Writer's Twitter Site there is no WGA organized boycott of new media as of 11 hours ago. So now I feel less bad about watching Ugly Betty this week online as well.

Dennis said...

Hi everyone! Long time no see :) I've been avoiding this thread since I haven't finished the book yet.

Plus, I've been pretty busy with the Cloverfield stuff, but I noticed that the Lost Mobisodes / "Lost: Missing Pieces" have officially started.

I've started a new blog - LostMobisodes.com. I'm still working on it, so it's not quite "pretty" yet, but I do have the first video up.

I'll be posting the videos each week, with a transcript, so come by and leave a comment about the video (or just come by say hi!)

Dennis said...

Oh, also...

I've started working on compiling the Flashbacks again. I started on Jack's flashbacks last night, so hopefully I'll have something in a few days.

Erich said...

Been a long time... I was a bad boy this summer and read books that weren't on the list (unless I forgot about Sawyer reading the new Jerry Lewis biography?).

Too bad about the strike. I hope it gets resolved quickly, not only because I want Lost back, but because it's hurting a lot of people who work in the industry but don't have unions to protect them.

I support what the writers want, and understand why they're fighting for it (they deserve to get paid), but I've got a big problem with strikes and unions, on a philosophical level.

Strikes are like wars, in that no matter how just or necessary, civilians get hurt. It's sad to see.

Here's hoping for a quick end to the war.

I hope everyone is doing well. I've missed coming by and posting!

Tess315 said...

Alot of old faces popping in this week. Village,EF,Erich. Hi to all.

Dennis sounds like you've been busy. I'll have to drop in on your mobisode site.

amused I was wondering about watching shows on their sites too. I don't want to give revenue to the production companies while the writers aren't getting their share of it.

Erich
I'm not real big on unions either. But I do feel the writers should get fair payment for their work.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Wow, it's like a big family reunion here today! It's funny, I was catching up on comments this morning and I was wondering where all of the TLC guys had gotten to - and then Dennis and Erich appeared! :)

I'm still plowing through Turn of the Screw. No word on the podcast yet, but I'm still going to try to finish it tonight. Work has really been bogging me down lately. I'm so exhausted in the evenings and on weekends that its hard for me to concentrate on my reading. And this book's not helping! I'm intrigued, and I am enjoying it, it's just a little dense to be reading when you're already fighting to stay awake. :)

Erich said...

Sayid's girl, I totally agree that the writers deserve fair compensation. That's why it makes the whole situation so tough.

Besides not reading through TLC book list this summer, I started writing for dvdverdict.com. Our editor-in-chief (or, in the legal vernacular of the site, our chief justice) lives out in Santa Monica and has his SAG card, so we've been hearing a lot of front line stuff.

I really hope the writers get the payment they deserve for their work appearing on the internet!

maven said...

Hello, all:
Dennis: I bookmarked your Mobisodes blog. You're always the one to go to for info! Thanks.

Glad to see we all seem to support the WGA. It's sad to see how this affects so many others in the industry and out, and, of course, the fans of certain shows...but I believe the issues of important for all creative people. "New Media" might be the only media in the future.

It's Happy Birthday today for Brianne! Maybe you're lurking out there...haven't seem you in a while where.

Nice to see Erich and EF popping in.

Scoutpost said...

Wow- it is good to see everybody popping back in. Guess the strike is bringing us all back together. I really hope it resolves sooner than later.

Ok so here's a question for all you guys who watch Heroes. I just finished watching the first season on DVD. Is there a way start watching the 2nd season without downloading from NBC.com? Or- memphish- are you saying we can do that guilt free? Is it worth watching- I remember hearing you all say that season 2 was off to a slow/disappointing start? In looking at the NBC site, it looks like they've already taken down epis 1 and 2 from season 2. Is there a way to get those without going against the writers- or maybe there is a synopsis I can read about the first 2 epis? I would like to catch up with the series, and now would be a good time, except I don't know if I can do it without going against the writers.

Happy Veteran's Day everyone! Anyone heard from chucklez? Thanks to everyone who has ever served our country in the armed forces!

memphish said...

Scoutpost, I'd recommend you watch tonight's Heroes and then go back and watch ep. 5 and ep. 7 on NBC.com (the writers have not put guilt on us yet not to do it) and then you will be caught up and will have missed all the really bad parts (which have been exceedingly numerous) of Heroes Season 2.

TakesaVillage said...

Happy Birthday Brianne.
Speaking of Lost balloons, I'm sending a really big one with a smiley face your way.
Have a great week everyone.

Scoutpost said...

Thanks memphish. I'll do that.

Thanks from those who put two and two together on my "new" identity (or just recognized my picture). I'm going to be starting a new online writing gig soon too (congrats, erich!), so I've intentionally outed myself for legitimacy's sake. ;)

I certainly hope the strike comes to a speedy and satisfactory resolution for the writers (and for the suits, as best they can swallow it--want happy all around!). I read that the non-talent, non-writer crew on The Office got canned, and now I see that Heroes will be essentially turning the Origins project into a viewer-generated sweepstakes and airing it online instead of over the air. I hope this ugliness stops soon.

Still can't wait for February!

Is there a podcast today for "Turn of the Screw"?

Capcom said...

You know TBM, what you wrote about the strike is very interesting, in light of the fact that the studios want to remain keeping most of the revenue from non-TV airing from the WGA. If the WGA does not get more from the online/DVD/etc media of the future as they are asking, anytime they "get out of line" the studios can say, "Fine, we'll just air the shows online, and then you won't get anything from your work again." Very creepy.

Capcom said...

Oops, I meant TBP. :o)

I also thought of Dark Angel and his troubles at work. Be careful Dennis. We need you.

memphish said...

Congratulations Olerica!

I saw that commercial too Maven. There's been some discussin of it on DarkUFO mainly people trying to decide if the scenes are from the Missing Pieces or from S4. From watching it, it was hard to tell.

Capcom said...

Congrats Olerica!

Yeah you'se guys at work, watch out for The Man, like IB4UC said. :-)

Melissa_Lossa said...

Congratulations Olerica! Wow - we have a whole second generation of Losties on the way from this group alone! :) Does anyone ever hear from Admin David? Wasn't his wife due sometime this fall?

I saw that Verizon commercial last night, too. Darkufo has it posted (in the spoiler section, I think) as being the first promo for season 4. However, it's hard to tell. The promo is definitely for the mobisodes, but there are a few shots in there that don't seem to make sense, if they were intended to be "extra" scenes from episodes we've already seen.

****spoiler, if you don't want to know what's in the promo****

There's a shot of Hurley, apparently trapped somewhere in the Hydra, one of someone finding the Hydra logo on a piece of wood and one of what appears to be Jacob's cabin. It's cut to look like Hurley finds Jacob's cabin, but I'm not sure if those two scenes actually go together. As I recall, the whol thing seemed to be very Hurley-heavy (no pun intended), with a fair amount of Desmond as well.

****end spoiler****

For anyone interested, Dark UFO has a few screen shots from the promo as well.

maven said...

Melissa_Lossa: I believe David had his baby a few months ago. (I think he had a blog for the birth, etc., but I don't remember the address.) That's probably why he hasn't been around. I know my son and daughter-in-law are constantly exhausted!

Melissa_Lossa said...

Oh, maven - you're right! I do remember that now. It's so hard to keep track. I know there were a few babies coming from TLC, and I had a few "real world" friends who were expecting this summer/fall as well.

Congrats memphish you seem to have excellent fantasy league skills!

Scoutpost said...

Congratulations Olerica! HOw exciting!

Oh my- I rank 1282 with 110 points. I don't have a chance unless they start using some epis from season 3. Not that I have much of a chance anyway- hehe.

Off topic- Almost caught up on Heroes. Just last week's episode to go, and I have it recorded. I see what you guys were talking about how the 2nd season had stalled. Amazing how different season 2 is compared with season 1 (Kind of like the difference between season 1 and 2 of LOST only worse.) I don't think I could've handled another episode with Hiro in 1670's Japan. And I really hope things start to pick up with Peter and Sylar. Sheesh.

I've been watching so much Heroes lately that I had to throw in some LOST episodes, I felt like I was being unfaithful. Gosh I wish Feb. would get here...and that the strike would end.

Ok off to watch Heroes season 2 episode 8.

memphish said...

Ange said: Congrats memphish you seem to have excellent fantasy league skills!

Probably not. I just picked the people that match up with Dark's test case scenarios. Our picks are supposed to reflect S4, and I am notoriously bad predicting what's going to happen on LOST, so odds are I'll be in the 1000s when and if S4 ever starts.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Ha, ha, ha - I have you all beat! I'm in 1643rd place with... wait for it... -35 points! Not one of my characters was even IN this episode. I'm doomed.

Hi LoCos!

Mostly lurking lately, life has been interfering with my online time...just wanted to say hi.

FYSB said...

I came across this blurb on TV Guide online.

Whatever you think about the writers strike, ya gotta feel for guys like Lost writer-producer Carlton Cuse. As a writer, he's on strike. But as a producer... mmm. Not so much. So even though he's a member of the WGA's negotiating committee, he's returning to work, at least to do some post-production on the eight episodes that have already been shot. "We feel we owe that to our fans," he tells the New York Times. "We would harm our franchise if we didn't do it ourselves." Who'll be next to punch back in? We'll keep you posted... In other strike news, um, did they just hear about it in Canada? Bionic Woman, which shoots in Vancouver, powered down just last week, and Battlestar Galactica wraps early up north this Friday... And although the Hollywood Reporter says that secret meetings are taking place that would bring the hosts of the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with Conan O'Brien back to their desks, nothing is expected to happen before Thanksgiving.

A question just occurred to me...does the strike not apply to soap operas? I haven't heard anything about them shutting down. Anybody know?

Tess315 said...

Yes the strike effects the soap operas too. I think they write their episodes pretty far in advance.
I know one of my soaps had a terrorist storyline ready to start(terrorists from Ireland)when 9/11 happened and they canned the whole thing. One day a guy had been kidnapped the next it was a whole different storyline.

memphish said...

There has been talki this week about soap writers crossing and then not crossing the picket line. The "experts" predict that there are scripts to keep soaps on the air until the new year. They've been wrong about how fast other things have shut down though, probably because of the showrunner issue with people like Cuse, Lindeloff, Mark Cherry (Desperate Housewives), etc. refusing to cross the picket lines.

I have to say I'm glad Cuse is editing Episode 8. Otherwise the people who do the promos might be left in charge.

I just finished The Turn of the Screw. All I can say is "Huh?"

I hope I get to call in to the podcast. This Tues, right?

I can see how one can find Henry James' writing to be plodding. It's a SAT Verbal Section Writer's dream, with the dense vocabulary and winding sentences. I even had to look up a word or two (and that's unusual).

Is everyone else finished with the book? Can we mention the recent movie based on it, or would that be a spoiler?
