I'm glad you guys are keeping up with the 'casts! I can't wait to listen. Also interested in knowing more about your new podcast. Any info? or do we have to wait and hear it live?

Top ten. Yipee!

Off to listen to your podcast, but before I go I have to make one comment.....
If the "Lost" series finale ends like the "Sopranos" series finale did last night, I think I will self-combust......Geesh!

Amused2bHere said...

Isn't this a coincidence? I just went to iTunes to see if there were any new podcasts for TLC, gspn, or Jay and Jack, and was very disappointed to find none.

And now here you are! Thanks Passafist and Goog.

Passafist said...

Erich, I think you're on the TLCpodcast list, so I'll be sending an e-mail out with all the info!

hmm.......another podcast. sweet. guess i'll have to call and leave a message again.

well, going out to play bball. talk to everyone later.

Yea! Something to do!

Good Monday Locos. Just got back from vacation so lots of catching up to do.

Agreed! Wow, how disappointing was that ending?!?! Like everyone else, I thought my TV went dead for 2 minutes! I hope the LOST producers were taking notes on what NOT to do for a series finale!

memphish said...

Hi LoCos! I see I didn't miss too much while I was "away" as they say on NPR. "Away" always sounds so much more mysterious than "on vacation."

I'm looking forward to the new podcast after I re-watch the Pilot for the 108th time. I'm pretty sure its 108 times.

I hope everyone has been reading. I'm looking forward to Watership Down talk. While I was "away" I finished "The Fountainhead" and read "The Gunslinger," "Animal Farm," "Watchmen," and "The Man in the High Castle," so if anyone wants to talk about any of those books click my profile and send me an email.

maven said...

Hey, Memphish! Did you do anything else while you were "away" besides read? LOL

memphish said...

Ate, drank and lay in the sun. "Away" is hard work Maven. ;)

memphish said...

I'm going to post a question for the blog and see if anyone wants to talk a little LOST.

This set is about Flash Forwards, hereafter known as FFs.

1. Will there be FFs in Season 4 or will they go the way the arctic listening post and 4-toed statue did in Season 3? (And I know what's been reported, but what do you think? Remember that TPTB can always change their minds.)

2. Will there be FBs in Season 4?

3. Is Jack's FF set in stone?

4. Will we ever see FFs from a time after TTLG's FF?

martysbaybay said...

Memphish....

Myself I think the FFs will go the way of the listening post and the 4 toed statue,

I don't think that Jack's FF is set in stone. To me it was just one possibility.

I thought of the FFs as more of a plot device. Kind of like a heads up from TPTB as to why if this rescue succeeds it will not be a good thing.

I am hoping that Desmond will find a way back to the surface and kinda save Jack, as well as the other survivors, from himself.

The Lost Community got a nice little plug in this months episode of Podcast User Magazine. They didn't consult me so a bunch of the info like that "Steve and I started the community" are not our own words. These were assumptions on their part but it was nice to be recognized.

memphish said...

David's link takes you to the 60 page PDF file of the mag. The LOST story starts on page 30.

Thanks for the responses Martysbaby.

memphish said...

Key quote from the article:

In addition to the
podcast, they run a message board and an active blog, which has up to 500 comments per post. This is where the true fanatics are hanging out.

We're busted.

maven said...

In response to Memphish's questions:

I think the FF will definitely be a part of the next 3 seasons, maybe not used so often as FB's (which gave us some insight into our Losties). So I'm thinking there will be more FB's in S4. FF's are definitely a great way to tease us about the future (or current day) Losties, and get us into the frame of mind that there will be ending to this madness! LOL I don't think that Jack's FF is set in stone. We have seen that there can be course corrections, but, ultimately, you can't change the end result. I don't think there will be FF's from a time after Jack's FF from TTLG. I think that's about as far as we go to current day (even though it's off by a few months).

Thanks for keeping the discussions going, Memphish!

Hey Pod-meisters, great podcast! I am still giggling silly! :o) Soooooooooooo funny. Your comments on the Pilot were very interesting and pretty much go with my thinking. I have to re-listen!

Capcom said...

OK, I re-listened!

* I like your idea that the island possibly only cures those who have been initially brought back to life. Although, how do we explain Charlie? Maybe since he's "off" the island (i.e., in the water) the island can't help him? Or, the island keeps reviving him over and over, but since he's under water, he keeps drowning eternally? Oh, that's awful.

* Remember, the first payoff that we (or the story) got from the Jack/Kate conversation about fear was when she was being chased by the "whatever" and she hid in the banyon tree and did the little five second count. But of course you're right, the biggest payoff came in the escape from Falcatraz episode.

* Interesting thoughts about Jack's failed alternate career in flying! So then he has to be a doctor instead. Jack kept accusing his father of saying that he didn't have what it takes, or whatever, and maybe that's what that was about? That he didn't have what it takes to be a pilot? Because he was a very good surgeon, so he surely had the chops for being a doctor!

* I have always liked the factory-on-the-island theory. The DI-then-Mittelos has been there plenty long enough to set up a make-shift manufacturing line of some sort, if not an elaborate one. I also like the idea of them (DI or Mittelos) cranking out some kind of spooky product and distributing it into the world, as well as making some of their own products for survival.

* I also like the bubble idea, especially if it has a hole in the top for airplanes to drop things down onto the island! :o) That could be how Naomi got in, her chute just made it into the hole! Did we see the helo splash into the water? If not, maybe it hit the glass of the bubble, haha.

* From now on Bonny and Greta are officially Betty and Wilma! :-D

* Hey, don't knock the Jericho revival! Heheh. I heard that fans sent tons of peanuts into TPTB of the show. I watched that show and I don't remember peanuts being a big part of the story, but maybe I missed something?

Again, great podcast guys!!!

Anonymous said...

ugh......"bubble"...........*cough, cough*............ugh, i say.

Tess315 said...

Hey capcom
I like Jericho too. The reason the fans sent nuts to the CBS offices was in reference to a story Jake's grandfather had told him about a World War II General (forget his name) who being out numbered was told to surrender by the Germans. His response was nuts. Which means go to hell. (or maybe F you) anyway he told that to other town's leader who wanted him to surrender Jericho to them. And basicly that's what the fans were telling CBS by sending the nuts.

Tess315 said...

I don't know if that was a Freudian slip or just bad typing. :) But it should say to the other town's not to other town's.

To answer your questions: yes, yes, no, no. :)

And you were quite the bust reader while you were away! I finished Watership Down and Harry Potter 3 while I was on vacation last week. I'm trying to re-read all of those before July gets here!

I'll send you an e-mail in the morning, though - I want to hear your thoughts on Watchmen.

And to those of you who asked to have barbarajay's book added to the list - it's there! Ded actually suggested it to me awhile ago, but since I didn't know barbarajay's real name, I couldn't track it down on Amazon until now.

Remember, if anyone has a favorite book to add to the TLC Recommended list - let me know!

Joseph Finchum said...

Sup Loco's,

Been busy with a lot of stuff so I am going to do this all at once.

First I want to say something about their little bit about the wars... In one of the new Linkin Park songs there is a line that just popped out at me.

"When rich men wage war, poor people (men) die."

This to me is the essence of all war and it should be taken to heart.

Back to LOST:

Barbarajay,
When they first started talking about doing a book club, even before the list was made I suggested your book to Melissa... so we have been looking out for you since the get go.
I happen to like to read people's profiles.
I also can't believe how many people here are 250 years old... lol.... life extension plan???? Hmmmmmm

Somewhere during the first season, it is said that the fuselage tumbled through the jungle, which is why Jack was dropped in the jungle and not at the beach.

The noises of the monster have evolved along with the monster. When smokey is visable to the losties, he is closer and ou get a close up set of sounds, as well as being different from a far.

Fire engine siren do not sound the same to the listener ten feet away as they do to the person 200 feet away. There are undertones and, the fire truck has bells and a loud horn, these are cut out by the siren over distance.
The instances of the monster have gone down since season one and in my opinion if the Hatch is involved with the monster, it goes the other direction, the monster gets out less now.

No two planes, not within the grasp of our friendly creators.... lol
It would be much more simple of an explanation than that. One of those things that makes you go...
I can't believe I didn't figure this out sooner.

I have always thought that the rain was a precursor to tragedy.

The guy with the leg missing dies of an infection.

The big deal for anyone who can't remember is that they killed Scott, but in the Finale they brought back Steve instead of Scott, and hilarity insued.

Back to the monster. When the Monster eats the pilot there is an animorphic shadow seen around the cockpit, so it has to be smokey... lol

I agree that they didn't give anyone a chance o get involved... an e-mail could have solved that, but we all know that Steve and David don't respond all that quick. No offense guys, but a mass e-mail would have been easy.

Unknown said...

Hey all, another great podcast and thanks David for butchering yet another accent :P i'm gonna have to send in an mp3 so you can see what i really sound like. but at least i got a giggle out of your attempts. will prolly send an mp3 in for the next podcast, your AUSSIE (not southern accent) pal, Noo Nah! ;)

I too am rereading all my Harry Potter books so I probably won't be involved in the Watership Down disscussion. I'll try to join in with A Wrinkle in Time and the rest. Also I've been trying to get these books without having to buy them. Watership Down has been a pain to find but I already have read A Wrinkle in Time.

Memphish asked:
1. Will there be FFs in Season 4...? Yes.
2. Will there be FBs in Season 4? Yes, we need to see Alpert's story!
3. Is Jack's FF set in stone? Gee, I hope not!
4. Will we ever see FFs from a time after TTLG's FF? Gee, I hope so! As I've said before, the next three years had better not be leading up to that meeting at the airport. I'll scream!

So much for my 2 cents.

Good to hear from you Dedjezter. I was beginning to wonder if you were on vacation too. I agree with you on the war quote. 'Nuff said.

Sayid'sGirl, don't worry about getting Watership Down. Just read the online Cliff Notes and join in!
At least you'll know who Fiver and Hazel are.

Be back later!

Thanks to those of you who answered my Flash Forward questions. If you haven't yet, you can find them easily by clicking here.

Today's LOST question:

Whose Flash Backs do you still want to see and whose are done?

maven said...

Morning all!

FYI: DocArtz over at The Tailsection posted info from a NY Times article in which Cuse and Lindeloff weigh in on the Sopranos finale "controversy" and how it might relate to LOST.

maven said...

I think we're all agreed that Richard Alpert's FB is most wanted one. There are so many questions surrounding him.

I actually feel we're done with most of the main characters. Unless, they're hiding something else from us. (Would they really do that? LOL)

memphish said...

I still want Rousseau's flashback. And one that tells how Ben got in charge of Alpert. I guess that could be either Ben's or Alpert's. I also want to know Libby's story, and I wouldn't hate one more Desmond flashback to explain why he was in jail.

I can't think of a Season 1 regular character's story who isn't done to death unless it's maybe Sayid. We still don't know his Daddy issues and how he speaks English so well.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Yeah, I'd like to see Alpert, Rousseau and another Ben. Maybe one for Alex as well? Definitely another for Des, to explain his military/jail time. I'd like a Penny flashback as well, to fill in what she's been up to since Des left.

I agree that most of the characters who have been around since season 1 don't seem to have much more to tell, unless they take characters in a completely different direction, which I wouldn't like. There were some fill-in episodes this season that didn't seem to add anything new, just reiterated what we already knew.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I really felt that this season was about revealing "what lies beneath." Jack's a hero - but he really had some violent, obsessive tendencies; Kate hated being on the run, but she hated staying put even more; Locke's mister high and mighty, but he lived on a pot farm, Des had one true love in Penny, but he also had Ruth, whom he abandoned in the same way, etc.

Unless we're looking for what lies beneath the beneath, I don't know what season four flashbacks would look like.

Tess315 said...

amused2behere
Maybe I'll go the Cliff Notes route. Thanks.

melissa_lossa
I''m on Order of the Phoenix right now. The fact the last book comes out on my birthday makes it extra special.

memphish
FB's I'd like to see Richard's of course. I'd also like to see more of Claire's backstory the only thing we know is she went to a psychic, may have a special baby and that she's Jack's half sister. Also Desmond, Ben, Juliet maybe more on Michael and Walt if they come back. Then there's Rose and Bernard we haven't seen much on them. Then there's Cindy she's still around and we know nothing about her. To be honest with you I could watch FB's on any of them I enjoy the FB's they give me insight into the characters and to me that's what it's all about. Who they are and why the they make they decision they make. I love the mysteries of the island they're great and fun. But the charcters are what it's all about.

Melissa_Lossa said...

sayid's girl - what an awesome birthday present! :) Are you going to get your book at a midnight release?

FYSB said...

Hi LoCo! Missed you guys!

I've been thinking about memphish's questions. I HOPE they use the flash forward sparingly, especially if the future is changeable. Otherwise, it would be a big waste of time...sort of Bobby Ewing-ish if you know what I mean. By showing it once, we know that getting off the island is going to have some negative consequences for at least two Losties (ie, Jack and the corpse) It might be interesting to see a FF for someone that had a really great outcome.

And besides the Smoke Monster, the flashback/flash forward/flashsideways I want to see is Jacob!

martysbaybay said...

Memphish......

I'm with you on the whole Richard and Ben dynamic. I would love to know how Ben ended up telling Richard what to do instead of the other way around.

Danielle would be a great choice

Anything regarding Jacob and Smokey would just be a wonderful gift as they seem the biggest mysteries

I dont know what ill do waiting for next year!

Capcom said...

Oh thanks Sayidsgirl! I remember the quote of the General now! But I cannot remember his name either. That's a famous quote. Anyway, glad that there is another Jericho fan here too. I hated that the dad died.

What could we send ABC when they next get out of line? The network execs, that is, not our beloved Powers That Be. Maybe coconuts? Or bags of sand? :-)

FYSB said...

Oh, capcom, I think we send them giant jars of Dharma Mayo!

memphish said...

We sick Smokey on them.

Capcom said...

Right about the mayo! Unfortunately, that Dharma label site seems to have had to take off the labels. Check it out, it's kind of vague, but it seems that someone "made" them take them off. TPTB? Do we have any talented peeps here who could do the label graphics for us for some mayo or peanut butter? And don't forget the beer too. :o)

As for sending Smokey, Memphish, we could sew together some of those black pompom balls that are sold at the craft store. Or, we can send them some of those black snakes that you burn on the 4th of July! :-D

memphish said...

Yeah Capcom, complete with an old-time flash attachment to strobe at them. I hope they don't have a sonic fence.

Right Admin, he does look a lot like Ethan! I've seen that boy before, but can't place what show it was.

maven said...

Hey guys: Are you aware this is a ARG going on over at Lost-TV Forum? It seems to be put on by some fans, but what I've seen so far is pretty good (there's even a rumor that good ole Matt the Pale might be involved!) It has to do with the license plate web sites from Kate and Jack's car in TTLG FF. It seems someone named Chad(Jack) is looking for Sue(Kate) who may be working for Mittelwerk. She's trying to get in touch with Chad/Jack to get him to blow up MIttelwerk's ship, etc. They both have myspace pages, etc. If you're interested, check it out.

Capcom said...

Thanks Maven! I guess that we should start on page one of the posts to follow from the beginning? The link goes to page 99.

maven said...

Sorry, about that Capcom. That's just the last page I was on. You should start from page one if you want to catch-up.

ib4uc said...

maven... thanks! Just read the first few pages -- it seems pretty interesting. I gotta find time to read all 99 pages though!

maven said...

GoodKarma30 summed up the plot so far: "We are trying to help Kate contact Jack about blowing up the ship with explosives. The ship is carrying a virus. She has asked us to help him find the explosives. However, the latest message in the image seems to suggest that 'Kate' should not be trusted."

Interesting thought! I'm only up to page 23 in the forum so far! :-D It would be fun if it was MTP, for old time's sake. I wonder if whomever did it, got some permission or blessing from TPTB?

maven said...

Well, he used to say how he would improve TLE if he had the chance! Especially when things bogged down. This ARG (they're also calling it the FARG as in Fake ARG) does move along pretty fast.

Capcom said...

Heh, FARG, that's funny!

memphish said...

If you are a Sopranos fan or just a TV fan or just a fan of Maven's friend Ken, read his latest post.

When do we start talking Watership Down?

Amused2bHere said...

Memphish, I think we set the last Wednesday of the month for the big discussion, but I'd be willing to go early if everyone is done reading and ready to talk.

I am impressed with your list of finished books! How do you find the time to read so much? I thought you had kids...lol

memphish said...

A2BH, I was on vacation last week with kid, hubby and in-laws so I had a lot of free time. Plus reading is often what I'm doing instead of what I should be doing.

memphish said...

Today's question, and in case you haven't figured it out, these are variations or out right steals from the last Season 3 TLC podcast:

If Desmond didn't have flashes, would Charlie have died from the lightning strike or somewhere else before TLG?

And we've covered this a little before, but were Desmond's flashes good or bad (a)for the LOSTies? (b) as a plot device?

Melissa_Lossa said...

I'm sticking with my theory that Charlie has always been destined to be saved. If Des didn't have his visions, someone else would have saved his life somehow in each instance. Even in his eventual death, Charlie could have been saved, had he chosen so. He could have easily closed the door behind him and escaped with Des. He had just decided that it was time.

As a plot device, I think the flashes worked great. They tie into two different themes of Lost - the idea of time and the stuggle between destiny and free will. We've had several hints that time is different on the island, and even before Desmond has his flashes, we were having our own flashes of the past. The fight between destiny and free will is the same fight between faith and science that has been going on throughout the entire series.

Capcom said...

Since TLG aired, I am even more so impressed with Dom's acting in the drowning scene. The emotions that he expressed in the looks on his face were just incredible. He so looked as if he was both tired of running from death and happy to stop running, and very happy and relieved that his last acts on earth would save Claire and Aaron. ((whether or not the vision acts out as seen by Dez is still TBD, but for Charlie's knowledge, that's all he had to go by)) Charlie was saved first on the island by Jack after being hanged. So Des has not been the only one to save Charlie. And maybe he was saved in-flight by the plane by being in the loo, haha.

Capcom said...

BTW Ded, I went onto your site to show my nephew your awesome Lost clay-relief and it wouldn't open. He's looking forward to seeing it. Is there still another place where you are showing the oblique views as well as the topdown view? He also thought that your Manga-Ded looked great, loved your kitty pic, and also the Cross Of David. :-)

BTW-2, has anyone else started following the FARG yet? I'm only about halfway thru the forum, and following the links. Something new is supposed to happen on the 15th and 16th. Natch! :o)

maven said...

Morning:

Re Memphish's Daily Question:
I also think that Charlie was meant to be saved to fulfill his final destiny (thinking he saved Claire and Aaron...as far as we know). He has been "saved" numerous times on the island other than by Desmond...even Locke helping him get off drugs counts as a save. Maybe by building up "you're gonna die, Charlie" and Des saving him built up Charlie's strength to realize that he needed to do this final deed to save others...it was meant to be.

The flashes worked very well as a plot device...building up Charlie's resolve that since he was going to die anyway and the universe cannot ultimately be changed, he might as well flip that switch at the end.

Capcom: I'm still reading along and checking out the links. They all think something big is going to happen on the 15th and 16th! Is it going to be at the Phuket Marathon?

maven said...

And BTW, Memphish: Thanks for pointing out Ken's funny take on the Soprano's finale. After initially being very pissed off...I'm beginning to think it might have been the way to go. Tony has to spend the rest of his life looking up at that door and watching his back.

Capcom said...

Right! I forgot about Locke helping Charlie as well! Sheesh, with all those Mary statues around, he really could have gotten into trouble and OD'd if it had gone the other way.

I don't know about the Phuket thing, I'm only on page 37. :-( I'm clicking on every single link that they post so I don't miss anything. Ah, nothing like playing a game vicariously thru other peeps! :o) And these people seem to be nice and polite like TLC so far.

Capcom said...

Well, no one else is quite like the peeps at TLC! :-X

maven said...

Capcom: Agree that they seem really nice and friendly there! And very thorough, too! All the links are fascinating. I did post that I'm lurking around and I appreciate all their hard work.

Capcom said...

Oh that was nice! Yes, they are working hard on this! I'm going to try to be caught up with it all by the end of the day. :-)

Capcom said...

Haha! Here's a quote from an old TLE friend Tresbien on the FARG forum: "So question of the day is: can you have a fake alternate reality?"

Ya gotta love these Lost fans! :o)

Melissa_Lossa said...

Capcaom,

I don't know if anyone else responded to this, but I have made a complete Dharma Beer can label and could easily convert it to a mayo label or make a whole new label and post the .psd , .ai , .jpg , .tiff file somewhere for everyone to get.

But wouldn't it have to Dharma brand Ranch Dressing Composite (complete with small text that says it will keep at room temprature for 7 years... lol)

Davis or Goog,

I meant a mass e-mail just before the podcast was recorded. I thought you said you were taking a break for longer than you did. I would have gladly made a recording for the Pilot pt 1 episode.

Question about Walt -- I think most people believe that Walt in TTLG was a manifestation be it Smokey, the Island, Jacob. What about this exchange back in Ep. 1.22:

Walt Don't open it.
Walt Don't open it, Mr. Locke. Don't open that thing.
Walt Just don't open it.

Could this have been an Island manifestation as well? Could Jacob have been communicating with Locke via Walt or the appearance of Walt to try to stop him from opening the Hatch? Did Jacob send Smokey after Locke in "Exodus" and try to pull him into the hole to physically prevent Locke from opening the Hatch?

That sounds great Ded! I didn't know that you had a label. Is it somewhere on your art site? Yeah, and the peanut butter said something like "solid protein substance" or some such yuckiness. :o)

Memphish, my head is still spinning freely about anything concerning Walt, his apparitions and sightings, his messages, etc. Without more data, I don't really understand why/who the heck didn't want the Swan opened, and the button not pushed, etc. I really hope that the Walt things are something that TPTB will clear up before all is said and done. I can live without any explanation of Vincent's weirdocity in the story and on the island, but if they leave me hanging about Walt, I will cry.

memphish said...

Capcom, Vincent = Jacob which explains Walt's unique communion with him as well as whistle carving Locke. :D JK

Capcom said...

Hey, things have been weirder!!! I'll believe just about anything at this point. Maybe Vincent really died, and Jacob is trotting around as Vincent, helping the Losties find clues.....like skeleton arms with keys on them! :o) Of course, he might as well just make Vincent talk and tell them everything, to hurry up the pace, haha.

For anyone watching Traveler:

- If you're still watching ABC's Traveler, you may care to know that Jay and Tyler have MySpace pages that may include clues.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Hey, memphish - thanks for the info on Traveler! I saw those myspace pages the other day, but maybe I'll go back and check for clues. :)

Traveler is no Lost, but it's a pretty cool show! Only three more episodes to go - hopefully, it gets a second season. I was actually just reading a blog by the creator yesterday, and he was saying that he actually liked having only 8 episodes in a season for such a serialized show. It made him cut out any filler and concentrate on what's really important. Hopefully, Lost will be the same way with its new, shorter seasons.

Dennis or admin don't change the link on the front page because I don't want a lot of downloads of this episode from the alternate link!

Also for anyone who might me interested The Goog and I finished our brand new podcast called "The Devil's Advocate with David and the Goog." We'd love for you to check it out head on over to thedevilsadvocatepodcast.blogspot.com and give it a download. This was sort of our pilot episode and thanks again to those here in the TLC that came out and participated.

In the weeks to come we'll be adding lots of equipment and better sound (I'm just waiting for it all the come in the mail) but what we really need is dissenting opinion.

This is the last I'll mention it here but if you'd like to be reminded of our next show just shoot an e-mail to TLCpodcast@gmail.com. WORD UP!

Hey all! I love the questions though I'm late weighing in on them.

Regarding flash backs, I always think that there couldn't possibly be more about a main character's past that I'd want to know and then TPTB always surprise me. I appreciate even the random small stuff they throw out. The deeper they layer this thing more more I like it, even if it makes the show excruciatingly slow. So I would like flashbacks from anybody. My list of flashbacks I'm most interested in is very similar to those already mentioned:

Alpert
Rousseau
Alex
Libby
More Desmond!
Mikhail
J___ ____tham
cindy
Walt
Vincent
Smokey
Jacob

I think I'm most interested in seeing Claire's flash forward, but that's partly because I'm a young mother too. The baby phase already seems long enough without Claire's lasting for years our time!

As for what we could send ABC when they next get out of line, I love the toy airplane idea. Is there any anagram that would work too? Or Namaste brownies?

memphish said...

Nice brownie link Twinkle.

Today's LOST question is:

Locke tells Jack "You're not supposed to do this," in reference to using the sat phone. Is Locke right? Before you answer, click here to see my blog post showing all the times it seems Locke was wrong about who was supposed to do what. Comments on my blog are appreciated too.

Twinkle said...

I posted a comment on your site. Here's a briefer version and an comment about Jack.

Anytime something is "supposed" to be done we have to ask "According to whom?" If there are Powers greater than our Losties at war, for instance Fate versus Island, then the "supposed to"-s could be very contradictory.

Therefore by one set of standards, Jack is right that he is supposed to make the call. His standard is to take whatever path makes the most sense to get everyone rescued. Locke isn't operating under the same standard and he's may be being used by the Island. According to the island, Jack isn't supposed to make the call.

Only time will tell if Jack was right. Based on the information he had at the time, I think he made the right decision to call. Although personally I would have interrogated Locke a little more before going ahead. No harm would have been done to hang up, talk, and then call back since communication had been restored. Of course, Jack couldn't have known that communication was open and wouldn't be blocked again any time soon.

memphish said...

Good answer Twinkle, and thanks for the comment. I agree that all the LOSTies still need to be asking more questions. For example, what do you mean Ben that "every living person on this Island will die" because I make a phone call? Who are those people? How do you know that? Why don't you believe Naomi's story? Where did you come from Locke and why is your shirt bloody? Just some suggestions.

Tess315 said...

I think Locke is right. I'd like to say he's wrong because he's not one of favorite characters.

I think Locke is like the person who asks for answers to his prayers and when he doesn't get what he expects he doesn't think that they have been answered. Which is why they/he loses faith. I think he has his faith back in the island and although he may not know what the out come may be he has faith that it is the right thing to do. I don't think he's expecting a certain out come this time he's just trusting it's right. So at this point anyway I do think he is right.

Ange said...

memphish: I dig your blog! Well done.

Capcom said...

Hi Locos!

There are definitely a lot of people and forces working at crossed purposes with each other on the island! Boone tries to take care of Shannon, and Shannon does everything she can to thwart his attempts to be nice and protect her. Sayid is trying to get them rescued, and you-know-who does all he can to stop it. Locke says they are supposed to open the hatch, and Walt/Boone say don't open the hatch. Walt/Jack say don't push the button, and Locke says they need to push the button. The Lostaways need food and shelter (and showers), and Jack and Locke don't tell them about the hatch and the food and safety (and showers) therein. Then Locke says don't push the button, and Eko/Dez say they have to, to save the world. And now we are shown signs that Ben and Richard (and other Others) have different goals for the island and the facilities. Then throw Jacob's interests in there too, whatever they may end up being! Round and round they go, with any of their specific actions cancelling out the actions or progress that others have taken. Like two steps forward, three steps back. And it's hard to keep a scoreboard of who is winning, because we (and the Lostaways) don't yet know what the heck is truly the right thing to do, and for what or whose benefit!

That's the thing that drives me most crazy (in a good way) about the show. Personal dilemmas and conflicts aside (which every single person on the island has), the big picture is what's going on with the Island: is it sentient, why/how does the Island "want" anything at all, and what or who is the overall biggest threat to either the Island or everyone on it (irrespective of their personal needs which seem to be completely diametrically opposed to each and every one elses)?

It boggles the mind (in a bad way)! :o)

Capcom said...

P.S. Yes! Nice work on your blog Memphish, I just checked it out! :-)

P.S.S. And now it even seems as if even Walt is contradicting himself too! That is if all the sightings of Walt that we have seen, have actually been Walt. I guess it all depends on what the meaning of "Walt" is, to paraphrase someone, heheh.

Capcom said...

Oh wow. Sorry to bring more of the FARG here if no one is interested, but someone posted this about the wishbox/island, and all our boxes in general, and it could pertain in theory to the show:

"So if we relate their quote to the Schrodinger cat theory... then we can assume that as long as nobody can find the Island, everyone on it is both living and dead at the same time. So perhaps if/when the boat comes ashore, everyone on the island will move to one of those two states... either living or dead."

Pretty freaky, if this would really be the case on the island. In Shrodinger's theory, you can't open the box to find out whether or not the cat is dead (because it changes the state of the box...). So it kind of gives meaning to Ben's curious wording that "every 'living' person/thing/whatever" on the island will die if Jack lets the call go through.

Just food for thought, and I'm sure it can be shot full of holes as much as any theory. :o)

maven - if you're around, where did you hear that mattthepale was involved in this?

Wow, Capcom. That would boggle the mind, if it's a Schrodinger's cat scenario. I'd love to see the explanation given to the casual viewer about it, though. Yeah, We'd all get it, but what about Joe and Jane Casualviewer? Their heads might actually explode!

memphish said...

Nice Schroedinger's Cat stuff Capcom. It also reminds me of variations of Lost Horizon, Brigadoon, Picture of Dorian Gray where if you remove things from their "special place," they turn into something entirely unexpected and not nice. Which really makes me wonder why it is that non-aging Richard Alpert is the one person we've seen on-Island, off-Island and back on-Island.

And thanks to everyone who has tried out and posted on my blog! I'll try to keep posting questions there and here to have a least a little LOST discussion most everyday.

Yep Melissa, I'm still slogging thru the FARG forum, only a few pages left to go! I had to stop reading to go hiking at the park with my nephew today, and the only reason I mention that is because there are some AT&T cable access "hatches" here and there, and they looked a lot like the unburied Swan hatch sticking up out of the ground! It was really fun when we found them. Some are right off the path, and some are in the woods, which look very jungle-like.

Right Amused, it will be very interesting to see how they 'splain Schrodinger on the show! :-D

Memphish, I think that you have just solved the "Picture Of Richard Alpert" mystery! Perhaps we'll see a painting of him when we get to the Temple? If this was the X-Files, they would definitely be utilizing that lore. :-)

Hey, ladies - happy Friday!

I was just reading through comments - I really hope that TLCM is okay. I was just thinking about her the other day. I was at Hallmark, looking through those musical cards, and they had a "hang in there" kind of themed one that played "Make Your Own Kind of Music." I wished that I had her address so that I could send it to her from all of us!

If she has an .edu e-mail address that is disconnected, it may just mean that she's not with the school/university anymore. The station that I work at is affiliated with a university, and when someone quits, they kill their .edu e-mail. Here's hoping!

martysbaybay said...

Memphish.....

Great question. I have always wondered about that one. Sounds crazy, but, looking back at that event it seems like someone or something wanted to shut him up. After all he had the most information about where the plane was or maybe I should say where the plane wasn't. If I remember right the pilot told Jack that they were thousands of miles off course and rescuers would be looking for them in the wrong place. He also knew the most about the moments just before the crash. Like I said sounds crazy.

memphish - your are just the best. your question of the day and blog and links are just Great.

Personally i think the pilot was killed just to introduce smokey.

Happy Fathers Day weekend to all the fathers out there.

memphish said...

Martysbaby, I was thinking maybe Smokey took out the pilot because he was the most responsible for the plane violating the Island or something like that. Of course, the more we learn if that's Smokey's reasoning Desmond better watch out. But it kind of works with Locke being so willing to take out Naomi who has violated the Island by her presence and the sat phone, but not taking out Jack.

martysbaybay said...

Memphish....

Good point, hadn't thought of it that way

FYSB said...

I wonder if Smokey killed the pilot because he was no longer necessary...his job (whether he knew it or not) was to get the plane to the island. Like the other people who died in the crash, the island had no use for him and disposed of him. Like it should have done with N & P to begin with.

Off topic, but since we are a book club now... I came across this interview with Neil Gaiman that might interest some of you (Hi Ange!). He talks a great deal about the movie version of Stardust (which apparently has both Peter O'Toole AND Ricky Gervais so you know it's gotta be good). Neil will also be at Comic-Con this summer.

Hi All,

Tx for the info on TLCM Maven. That's right Melissa, didn't she say that she was finally quiting her job before she went on her trip? So maybe the 'edu' email didn't work for that reason. Aw, the card you saw and your thought about it was sweet.

I also thought that same thing about her trip Lostit, the way she worded it, it worried me.

Tx for the Youtube link Memphish.

And Hi FYSB!!! Nice to here from you. :-)

Now I'm off to see if anything happened on the FARG. Something is supposed to go down today and tomorrow.

Capcom said...

BTW, when the series is over, I'm hoping that someone/TPTB string all of the entire series together in chronological order on a DVD, like that synchronized crash vid! I'd still buy it even though I'll already have bought all five DVD seasons by then. :o)

FYSB said...

Hi capcom! I may peek in on the FARG. I'm curious, but a little nervous I'll get sucked in like last year. These things are like drugs!

Ange said...

Hi FYSB! Like you I am too nervous to look at the FARG. But to continue the OT, Stardust has an amazing cast including Peter O'Toole, Ian McKellen, and Claire Danes...I could go on and on, but instead I am going to go look at your link.

PS: I'm secretly ecstatic that people now think of me when Neil Gaiman is mentioned *swoon, sigh*.

Capcom said...

So far the FARG is mainly about picking up coded clues on the two main sites for Jack and Kate, and their Myspace and Amazon pages, which so far seem to be sending players to pages concerning Phuket, quantum physics, Schrodinger's theory, a virus, etc. But up to this point it's mainly being done with decoding and decrypting bunches of clues on the main pages. Players have also been emailing Jack, Kate, and Penny to get cllues, as their emails have been given on the Myspace pages I believe. If you're not into doing copious amounts of decoding, it's easy to just be a looky-loo like me. :o) It's intersting enough just to read the forum and watch it unfold for now.

maven said...

Hi, All!

FYSB: Agree with Capcom that's it's still interesting to lurk and read posts re the FARG! They also do great links. I, too, was afraid of getting sucked in (like I did with TLE), but so far I'm content with just reading along!

memphish said...

I'm reading Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King which was on Jack's shelf in his office in A Tale of Two Cities and have come across some interesting things.

First, I'm only 50 pages in so this may change later, but the main relationship in the story is between an 11-year-old boy and an older man, and the boy's single parent (mom) doesn't like that this boy wants to hang around the older man. Sounds kind of like Walt and Locke. (As a total aside, in Stephen King the characters seem to have mommy issues rather than daddy issues.)

Secondly, the older man gives the boy Lord of the Flies to read. And once the boy finishes it he can't decide if the ending was "good or bad, happy or sad." That reminds me of how most of us felt after the end of TTLG. They're off the Island; that's good right? But wait, Jack's a wreck, so was it good?

There's something else about the end of LOTF that spoils the ending of LOTF, so I'll save it and hopefully remember it when our LOTF discussion rolls around. But in terms of how it relates to LOST and Jack specifically is now that you've been rescued from the Island, who is going to rescue you?

memphish said...

This comes from tlc over on the Sledgeweb forum in response to The Black Rock podcast about TTLG and the "game changer." I thought it was very good, interesting and thought provoking, so I'm sharing.

I loved the flash-forward and thought it made the finale. Someone over at the Tailsection website posted a comment a while back stating that a true "game-changer" would have to be something that essentially moved the show from one genre to another. The example the poster gave was the first appearance of the monster in the pilot, which announced, "we're not watching a conventional castaways/Lord of the Flies story, we're dealing with a paranormal/sci-fi adventure."

I believe the flash-forward and the end reveal changed our sci-fi adventure into tragedy, the tragedy of a paradise found and then lost; the tragedy of being given a unique opportunity for redemption but not being able to see that opportunity for what it is; the tragedy of being given the chance to forget your sad life and start over, but wanting nothing more than to resume your sad life where you left off, and then finding out after it's too late that you missed your chance. To me, this thought experiment is very interesting and compelling, and hopefully the writer's will have the skill to explore these themes in a rewarding way over the next three seasons.

Anonymous said...

memphish: one of my theories (yeah, yeah) is that those who die "from smokey" aren't necessarily dying FROM him, but from their PRE-EXISTING wounds. Smokey was there as a guide them to away from the living, so-to-speak.

but what do i know? i'm still holding onto purgatory (and this as an idea accompanying it).

(and don't forget.

Capcom said...

Very interesting quote Memphish! It would be regret-times-two, to get your chance at starting over and either not take it or blow it completely. You blew your chance the first time, and then you blew it on the do-over!

And it seems to be that the same do-over ending does not happen for all our Lostaways. That is, some could blow it (like Jack by being the same Mr.Poopypants on the island and off), and some (like Charlie, even tho now dead) actually do something positive and productive with the chance that they have been given! Dez, Hurley, Sayid and Locke kind of seem to be the only ones who are specifically trying to change themselves or their future selves and actions. And then you have Kate who is just blindly plowing thru the events on the island without giving more thought to her previous life and future self than, "At least I'm not being chased as a felon on the island!".

TPTB probably will go into more detail on that thread, because they have been saying all along that the island is about assessing your former self and the chance of being reborn with new the opportunities from a clean slate.

memphish said...

One irony Capcom is it seems if you got your stuff straightened out like Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia, Charlie, you didn't get to make it off the Island. We'll have to wait and see about Claire, Sun, Jin, Sayid. They for the most part seem to have dealt positively with their demons. Will they make it off? And what about Sawyer whose dragon he slayed turned out to leave him even more empty? Is it February yet?

Ange said...

memphish said...I'm reading Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King which was on Jack's shelf in his office in A Tale of Two Cities...

I totally look at things through Lost colored glasses now...especially SK books. Even Watership Down has so many parallels but I am pretty sure the writers didn't read that book and say let's make X like Y in Watership. I guess it's kinda like when you get a new car and then suddenly you see that kind of car everywhere.

chucklez: You theory about Smokey taking people or guiding them is actually pretty sound if you use it to look at memphish's question about why Smokey mangles the pilot.

memphish said...

Nice idea about Smokey Chucklez. I'm trying to work out how that fits in all our Smokey sightings. I suppose you could argue it wanted to lure the Marshal out when it came to the beach the first 2 times. So what about it's non-fatal encounters? Does it think they don't need leading at that point?

Anonymous said...

non-fatal: giving them the opportunity to "choose" so-to-speak. If they choose wisely, they continue on with living.....or in my purgatory theory......continuing on in "limbo".

Too true Memphish! And to quote a line from Tom Hank's "From the Earth to the Moon", "...I'm not a big fan of irony." :-)

If the redeemed (for lack of a better word) Lostaways are dying off on the Island, which begs a very important question…...does the Island/Jacob/Whatever actually kill off the good people and keep the bad? For whatever reason?

Think about it, that may explain why Eko's death-by-Smokey seemed so confusing to us. Why (if Eko indeed was repentant in his heart for his life in Africa and also for killing the Others who attacked them) did Eko get judged so unfairly by Smokey?! Maybe Smokey did detect that he had repented and was a good person, so he had to die! I'm not saying that I believe this is the case, but it's just what I thought of when you broached the irony of who has had to die and who has been allowed to live.

And if on the Island, Bad is actually Good, that would also explain a lot of confusion on that term as well. But, like I said, I don't necessarily think in this direction, I'm just doing a brain-dump of some thoughts on your post. :o)

Alright, that's interesting news Memphish, I hope that TPTB utilized him a lot for that sort of thing. The way he can make his voice sort of waver and crack gives a very eery edge to his voice-overs. Desmond not pushing the numbers explained why the plain got pulled down onto the island, but it didnt explain why 815 was 1000 miles off course and conviently flying over magnetic anomoly island. I think that is part of why he was killed if he was even killed. The way his body was suspended in the trees reminds me of naomi and coop's story of the flight 815 being found but underwater so that there would be less scrutiny of the bodies. It also ties into that vision locke had in the sweathouse , where desmond and hugo were oceanic employees and the way the stewrdess was so easily endoctrinated into the others, which may even tie into gary troup, who was linked to cindy in the tle. I digress, maybe the pilot was silenced so that they couldnt put his "our instruments were messed up and before we knew it we were a thousand miles off course" story up to great scrutiny. Wouldnt the radar of the airlines and satalites have shown oceanic airlines something was a miss before they got 100o miles off cousre. The islands sphere of influence probably couldnt be 100 miles in diameter.. hhmmmmmm

Good morning LoCos! I hope those of you who watch 4400 enjoyed it.

LOST question of the the day: Why don't the "bad" people who've been trying to find the Island simply follow the food drops?

Melissa_Lossa said...

memphish - Are you enjoying Hearts in Atlantis? I really liked that book, and it actually ends up tying into the Dark Tower series in a pretty important way.

Did anyone watch The Dead Zone last night? I really used to love that show, but last season was pretty bad. I was hoping they could turn it all around last night, but I think they actually made it worse!

memphish said...

Melissa_lossa, I am enjoying Hearts in Atlantis and early in I realized it had Dark Tower tie-ins. I'm looking forward to how that plays out. Sorry, not a Dead Zone watcher.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I want to say that you really start to see the connections in DT5 - Wolves of the Calla. Then there's a lot in the final book as well. I won't tell you any more than that. :)

Sadly, Dead Zone seems to be a perfect example of how TPTB can ruin a show.

Hi all!

Ditto that on the 4400 too Memphish, last season they both really started to lose me but I'm going to watch both again this season to see if they improved at all. So far last night they were interesting, but I was kind of disappointed that the 4400 reused an old cliche for the plot. Although it will be nice to see Jordan back in action again. I think I watch the Dead Zone just to see Johnny's Arts and Crafts style house! On the Dead Zone they killed Sheriff Walt off, and that lends some credence to my theory that Jacob's profile looked very much like Walt's profile. Same forhead, same nose bump, similar mouth, etc. Maybe he left Dead Zone to work on Lost? It's not on IMDB yet, but neither is the latest ep of Dead Zone.

Good questions Memphish. Funny how we never run out of questions with this show! Whomever owns the ship(s) looking for the island (for a very long time, if Ben can be believed) might not have any access to it since the Purge maybe? And perhaps since the Purge, Mittelos (whoever they are) has taken over all the DI operations in the US as well? At this point there are too many holes in our information to make any guesses one way or the other, that is, those looking for the island could be anyone that we don't know of yet. Or, just someone we know, who has lost contact since the Purge.

Oops, sorry about the spoiler on the Dead zone above, if someone would care. I didn't think. :-B

Looks like the FARG is over. That was quick.

maven said...

Wow, that FARG went quickly!

Another good question Memphish!

I think that the Others might have control over the food drops up until "communications were blocked" by Ben. They either came regularly or when requested through the Flame station by Mikhael. Although we know from TLE, the Hanso set up food drops in perpetuity, since the purge, the Others are really running things. But, as things are beginning to unravel for Ben and Co., it probably was getting harder and harder to get those food drops (and they most likely stopped after the communications blackout). If the bad guys are Dharma/Hanso trying to get the island, they would know about food drops, but maybe the Others took it over and were able to change location of the plant that packaged Dharma food and delivery systems so Dharma/Hanso lost track of that, too. There are still too many unanswered aspects of this to be definitive, though. Time will tell (hopefully).

memphish said...

Hmmm Maven, you have me thinking. How's this for a scenario.

1987 Hanso Foundation is getting fed up with the lack of progress of the Dharma Initiative in solving the problem of the Valenzetti Equation. They are approached by Mittelos Bioscience in the form of Richard Alpert who buys out the project including a warehouse with Dharma laden foodstuffs and a Manual explaining how and where to do the resupplies. So the Hostiles have consolidated the information about how to get to the Island through Mittelos Bioscience.

There's a couple of other interesting food supply things I've come across as well. First, on the Blast Door Map there was a notation "P.R.D. Drop every 6-8 months. Fatalities: 5" P.R.D. according to the LOST puzzles means Periodic Resupply Drop. I wonder why 5 fatalities though? Were people hit by a falling pallet? Or was it 5 helicopter pilots who crashed after their instruments went wacky because of the Island like Naomi's did?

Then in Ben's Journal it says that re-supply of camp gear has been missed. Is this becuase the LOSTies appropriated the food drop intended for the Others? Or did Ben's post-purpling radio silence cause the re-supply to be missed?

Melissa_Lossa said...

memphish - I had to giggle at the thought of poor workmen being crushed under the falling food drops. :)

capcom - did you feel like The Dead Zone was just abandoning everything and starting over last night? They killed two characters and sent two more away. Not too mention, they recasted poor JJ for the second time!

Oh, and I love Johnny's house, too. :) Although last night, it looked like every set was part of Johnny's house!
