Lost: The Pilot Enhanced

A man awakes in a jungle. He is bruised and bloody, and doesn’t know where he is. A yellow Labrador Retriever watches him from the trees, then suddenly runs off. He forces himself up and winces in pain, leaning against a tree. He checks his jacket pocket and finds a small bottle of vodka. Recognition of where he is begins to float across his face. He winces back the pain and begins to run through the trees, reaching a beautiful beach.

He hears sounds - people screaming. He wanders around a bend and finds what has brought him here - a plane crash, survivors in shock. A man trapped beneath wreckage. A woman not breathing. A pregnant woman screaming for help. He runs to help those he can, and rallies the others to help him. One of these strangers asks his name: “Jack.”

And so we began.

First? for the Last?

I have to agree Mel... that blurb is very nice indeed.

These Pilot pop ups are insane... Telling you smokey used to be a man six seasons early... wow, just wow.

TheOtherLisa said...

It was eye-opening to remember how far Sun and Jin came! But, otherwise, what is the point, so far of the pop-ups.... it's almost like a recap show...

Beverly said...

I wonder who smokey went after that first night. It wasn't the tailies, it wasn't the people on the beach, it wasn't the pilot - that happens later.

TheOtherLisa said...

IDK Lost it... what could we think was going on in New Otherton? or with Danielle?

How did Bernard know that Jack had been "flirting" wirh Rose while he was at the bathroom? (That's how Bernard recognized Jack... but we dont see them cross paths in the pilot)

And really, what about Vincent?

Rain symbolizes something bad??? Really?

Wow.. just the cinematography/camera work has changed so much!

Joseph Finchum said...

But it holds up well... I have seen the pilot well over 50 times (used to loop it at work...lol) and I am still intrigued by every second.

TheOtherLisa said...

Agreed! Just striking to notice the differences that changed so subtly along the way the contrast escapes you till you go back to it.

Beverly said...

TOL, yes, Vincent - there was something definitely up with Vincenet. He was not just a dog.

I had forgotten how fantastic the pilot was. Wow!

TheOtherLisa said...

Now i remember why I had nightmares! (Truly, had to stop watching for a few eps during season 1/2....)

TheOtherLisa said...

Wow, just the 3 of us here right now?

Beverly said...

IIRC, In the FS, Bernard was not in the bathroom the whole time. When he came back, he saw Jack talking to Rose. (And Rose could have joked with him about some guy on the plane flirting with her)

TheOtherLisa said...

Ahhh, thanks Lost it... forgot the FS was different (and forgot what the differences are!) So the rules applied even now (not that we were aware), that Smokey could kill the "unlisted" people? Is the manifest the list? Couldn't be, right b/c Eko would have been on the list...

Beverly said...

Huh. that scene made it look like Charlie was at the front of the plane when it crashed. Yet he was on the beach with the rest from the midsection.

Joseph Finchum said...

That always bothered me Lostit.

TheOtherLisa said...

Charlie has a mirror moment right before almost flushing the stash...

They really did bring Sun and Jin a long way....

So.... pop up says Jae was killed by Sun's father....??

Beverly said...

Sawyer's come a long way, too.

TheOtherLisa said...

Yep... that's true from

Whatever you say Doc, You're the hero....

to... "you don't get to die alone..."

;-)

TheOtherLisa said...

Maybe the polar bear was only Walt's "specialness"?

TheOtherLisa said...

SAwyer kicked the cigarette habit, eh?

Capcom said...

Good post ML. :-)

Gee, all the bickering between Shannon and Boone seems pretty pointless now.

It will be good to read your bullets again Fenris!

Joseph Finchum said...

TheOtherLisa... that is just about what it would take to quit... lol

Joseph Finchum said...

The sheriff is in town....lmao

TheOtherLisa said...

There was a TYPO in the pop-ups... sigh....

TheOtherLisa said...

DeD- I can believe you... a polar bear running at me in the middle of the jungle and no convenience stores in sight, well, yeah... would trigger a whole bunch of lifestyle changes! Whether jack had been drinking by that time, we know Charlie had an addiciton, and we see it works better than any 12 step program...

Hey, guys - started late, so I'm a bit behind you (They just got back with the transceiver), but here's a few things I've noticed/wondered with the new perspective:

Did Smokey kill the pilot to eliminate any help he could give them in getting off the island? He seems to be the only person that Smokey grabs and kills at random.

It's interesting to realize that the reason Smokey doesn't kill any of the Losties is because they are candidates. I guess that means Eko was NOT a candidate?

I hope that something good happens to Boone in the finale. Poor guy always wanted to help so much!

TheOtherLisa said...

Wow, there was chemistry all over the place from the start.. no wonder we all got hooked.

ML- good thought about the pilot. Do we have a last name for Eko? Would he have been on the wall or cave.

Wonder what Kate's favor would have been, had she been able to ask it...

"A running count of the number of times the message is repeated..." The loop/iterations... back to Jacob's comment about it only ends once.

Sigh... that thud at the end... such a sad sound!

Beverly said...

It only ends once (tomorrow). Anything else is just progress (and we have seen a lot of progress in our favorite characters).

I'm going to really miss this. Someone somewhere should be selling black armbands with Dharma logos on them for LOST mourners.

TheOtherLisa said...

Lostit- I agree! This was really a wonderful escape- both show and LoCos/ARGs.

Melissa_Lossa said...

TheOtherLisa - Before he dies, the Marshall asks Kate what the favor was, and she says that she wanted to make sure that the farmer who turned her in got his reward.

TheOtherLisa said...

ML- Your memory is far better than mine!

Melissa_Lossa said...

I'm going to miss you guys so much!

Some friends invited us over to watch the finale at their house tomorrow - but I told them that I had to be here with you instead!

Melissa_Lossa said...

TOL - No, I just re-watched them all before the new season started. ;)

2costa said...

mother and claudia were speaking latin, so that would date it to about 30 bc or something at the earliest, so smokey existed before mib was born way back in Egyptian days.

Ellen said...

I can't even express how much I will miss all of you...I know I don't comment much in the past 2 seasons, too much going on in real life, but I have so loved "lurking" and reading your comments! This and LostARGs are the only blogs I really hang out on...I love the spoiler-free, kind atmosphere. Always have...been here since the LOST Experience Clues first started. LOST has brought me so many good friends and some wonderful television...sorry for the long, mushy post, but I'm feeling really blue about the end and I know you guys will understand.

Hi all, just dropping by to say how much today is going to mess with me.

I know it's only a TV show, but for some reason it has become much more than that for me. A lot of it has to do with you guys, so I'm going to blame all of you for any water that might leak from my eye at 5am on Monday morning !

Happy LOST finale' day. I can't believe it's actually here.

bigdog said...

Good morning. Happy Last day of LOST. I have enjoyed the ride and thank you all for letting me go on the journey with the nice people in this community...

Hope everyone enjoys the finale

Tess315 said...

Melissa that's so sweet that you gave up watching Lost with friends to be with us.

Lostit
Maybe smokey went after Christain that night. Although he was dead, it was the first body he used 2 days later.

I didn't ecpect to see anyone posting last night. Guess I should have joined it. Ded your early comments were hilarious. I was wondering what kind of popups we'd get. Some were easy to guess and I'd say them before they'd popup or make my own smart-aleck ones. My daughter looked at me and said you could be doing these. lol

TheOtherLisa said...

Happy Lost Finale Day-
Loss of this little escape will certainly bring a little grief to me too- even as such a sporadic poster ('07 ARGs and now). This year in particular, I'm thankful for the little break from "reality" here ;-)

See you tonight and in the next week to hash this all out! Then, perhaps, to lighten the mood.... a reunion in August over those controversial 20 DVD minutes??? ;-)

good idea theotherlisa

I was thinking this morning about how LOST became more than a TV show - it's a culteral phenomenon. I think it's mostlye due to timing. At the end of the first season, when we got those first TLE clues in the commercials and then on the internet and the ARG was officially launhced, that's what brought LOST viewers together in community. That's when the bloggers began writing and people really got hooked on the show.

If TLE hasn't happened, this show wouldn't have brought so many people together and it's the community that formed around it that made it such a wonderful experience.

There has been kind of a "Live together, die alone" theme among the viewership. I remember reading a recap (can't remember now if it was Doc Jensen, Vozzek or someone else entirely) that talked about the show being about "redemption in community". The blogosphere around the show has been somewhat of an extension of that theme.

Wow! I can't beleive it's actually ending. I have such mixed emotions about this. I can't wait to see the show, but I'll be sad to se the end.

This show has been somewhat of a religious experience for me. Not in the sense of "worshipping" the show or the caharacters or the writers, but in sharing the redemption journey of the characters - Ben's redemption/grace scene with Ilana being the standout moment. I sincerely hope that the redemption has stuck and Ben is pulling a con on MIB, that he didn't really kill Widmore, etc. I will be very disappointed if he has truly reverted back to the old Ben. I think there's hope. After all, Sayid woke up from his zombie state in the end.

Happy Last Lost Day (if we can really be happy about this)!

I also feel all of your sentiments about today. This has been an experience that can never be repeated. The friendships I've made here, on LostArgs and on Facebook are so special for me and I sincerely hope we can keep up this somehow (or as long as we can)! A huge thank you to Melissa_lossa and Zort for keeping this site going!

Please keep spoiler-free today. Even Damon warned us on FB that there are spoilers out there...apparently the finale has been compromised! Stay away from twitter today especially!

I re-read this just now, and thought it was a poignant way to begin the final LOST day.

"To whom it may concern: We are survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. We have survived on this island for 80 days. We were six hours into the flight when the pilot said we were off course and turned back toward Fiji. We hit turbulence and crashed. We've been waiting here all this time--waiting for rescue that has not come. We do not know where we are. We only know you have not found us. We've done our best to live on this island. Some of us have come to accept we may never leave it. Not all of us have survived since the crash. But there is new life, too, and with it, there is hope. We are alive. Please don't give up on us."

Tess315 said...

lostit
You have a point. I don't think Lost would have become what it did without the community that TLE created.

maven
Yeah I read on twitter last night that someone was @replying to people that used the hashtag Lost and spoiling the finale'.

I do know the title. It was impossible to stay away from that. But it's no spoilery. I'd give my opinion on it but I don't want to spoil anyone who doesn't know it and doesn't want to.

It's been a wonderful ride and i'm going to miss it now that's it's coming to an end.

Happy It Only Ends Once Day.
Next Sat.8pm,the finale will air again(with 25 minutes of commercials cut)followed by JKL Aloha to Lost.
My FS world has been bleeding through lately, keeping me from fully enjoying this week, but I will be in the front row tonight; fully involved, and loving it.
Last night was interesting with the Pop-ups.The plane crash scenes;in the air,and on the ground, will always be some of my favorite Lost moments.
At least with all the commercials
tonight, there will be more time to post our collective thoughts, and to catch our breaths.
I'm so glad Zort and some others will be joining us.
A little over two hours till the
recap show, and I am getting excited already.

sigh.
I hope you all have plenty of facial tissues on hand, this looks like it's going to be one of THOSE nights.

I hope we can keep the conversation going through the week, at the very least. I have grown very fond of this group, and although Lost is coming to an end my hope is that we will not have to end abruptly here too.
group hugs!
