And who wouldn't - I mean, look at him! Don't you just want to give him a hug?
Tonight, Hurley agonizes over what to do next, and the Locke monster is curious about the new arrival to his camp. Meanwhile, Ilana leads a mission to Hydra Island.
We're working with Hurley here - let's play count the dead guest stars!
And what's our buddy Desmond up to, I wonder?

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 280 of 280@JT, I thought the same thing regarding the bizarro AU comment. Everybody Loves Hugo was what they were filming when LA X premiered, I believe.
@JT - Bad Twin was pretty much a detective story. I was thinking they've said that the writer didn't do with it what the producers wanted them to.
Spoiler for bad twin (if anyone was going to read it and hasn't)
If it's related to Bad Twin, then the idea is sort of that the one who seems good turns out to be much worse than the bad one. But neither of them are exactly choirboys if I remember correctly.
That's about what I remember as well, Lost2010.
i think they focused on the connect four in santa rosa to go with the game thing. Red beat black. I wonder if mib just wants t make all the checkers fall. Micheal had the cartoon in season one"what's black and white and red all over"seems telling in our black and white game. The red flower hurley had for libby.
im pretty sure the chalk board had the same island scene as when hurley was visted by walt, but the other patients were working on it in the sideways. I'm reminded that dharma was holding mathamticians in the mental institutes, libby's doctor has to be dharma or an other
Lost2010-Well- that doesn't sound too good for Jacob then!
Just listened to your show...very good as always...
I just wanted to say I've been listening for a few years and I have always appreciated the effort you guys have put into it :)
Plus whoever said a few posts back about Jacks Crackpot theory being possibly on the money I tend to agree!
Cheers,
Jimmy in Seattle
2c- I was hoping that would be the island answer Richard was looking for...and interesting about thinking the Ilana may be more helpful to Hurley as a ghost than alive! And your list of her purposes was excellent. I agree that she was unique (at least I hope she is and not just a throw-away character).
JT- Cool on the comparison of going through the factory to see who would succeed Wonka...
Maven- didn't locke and ben have a debate over Dostoyevski in the hatch?
Who did Boone kill?
@OTL: Locke gave The Brothers Karamazov to Ben (aka "Henry Gale") to read while he was held captive in the Swan. ("Maternity Leave") This book is about patricide, echoing the deaths of Anthony Cooper and Roger Linus (respectivily). Despite Sawyer being the material murderer of Cooper, Locke is his intellectual murderder, like one of the Karamazov brothers. (per Lostpedia)
True about Bros Karamzov, Maven. It also investigates man's morality and thoughts on God, arguments on good and evil, honesty, etc. I actually just bought it to read.
:-)
Love the Hurley episodes.
Seems like the writers really made a point that Dead Libby on the island did not speak to Hurley. So I think that means that the ones he talks to on the island (AKA the whispers) do not have a Flash sideways? Trapped like Michael says.
Hurley talked to Charlie, Ecko, and Anna Lucia when he was at Santa Rosa so they are not "trapped".
Also, just a thought "crazy" Hurley sees "imaginary" Dave, It would be great to see Dave as someone that Hurley knows in the FS.
ghost charlie, christan and eko did not seem to be trapped on the island since they appeared to hurley in santa rosa and jack at the hospital. Unless those were not ghosts.
boone somehow was involved with his baby sitter dieing.
to go with the willie wonka thing, charlie showed wonka he could roll with the punches and be the last man standing. desmond having no fear seems to jive with that
I am thinking that desmond may be acting like the jacob of the sideway's, but he is a man made jacob constructed by hawkings and widmore through time travel and em blasts.rather than being annointed by the island or jacob, be he his a king without a throne in the sideways. I think we know kelvin was the last dharma guy on the island and eloise was a dharma employee at the lamp post. I wonder if all the dharma reasearch was designed to find and groom desmond to be a "man made profit".
I really hope that "ghosts" isn't the whole answer to any part of Lost. If you are going to invoke ghosts, you might as well just use magic spells and forget about electromagnetic energy or anything with a scientific basis.
agreed
There was an interesting story on NPR this week about randomness and how only with quantum mechanics can there be true, incalculable randomness. The science-types here might be interested in it.
Did anyone listen to the Official podcast yet? They had a great letter from someone who is supposed to go to a wedding on 5/23 and wondering what to do, LOL!
I haven't listened to the OLP yet, I usually wait an extra week, but as a committed SEC football fan I know that games come before hos so to speak. Granted these people probably set their date before ABC did, but in these parts a bride who picks a game weekend for a wedding date (and subsequent anniversaries) is either a) dumb because 1/2 the guests will either not come/be in the bar watching the game/on their phones following the games or b) an evil genius cause she can invite more people than she really wants to pay for and/or c) sadistic.
@memphish, LOL.
5/23 is actually my and my hubby's 2nd anniversary. He is being VERY good natured about sitting and watching LOST the entire night.
Guess people didn't realize ABC would switch the finale from a weekday to a weekend day. Although we're glad they did!
I'm really going to miss those podcasts by Darlton...they are so entertaining. FYI: Did you guys see that Carlton tweeted yesterday about a LOST celebration at UCLA Royce Hall on May 13th...with details to follow? Sounds enticing and I'm going no matter what!
I think the person going to the wedding may be one who just let us know on Lotto's list that she can't go to the Jay & Jack party.
I didn't listen to Darlton yet- I think they are too willing to give us "answers" at this point.
About "redshirts" -again, as someone who remembers them from the original show seen in B&W !- I have to say I don't think Dogen was one, or that Illana's role in the story could have been fulfilled by one.
To me, a redshirt is someone like Simmons, pretty faceless, who dies almost as soon as you see him to make a point- like "this machine fries normal people."
Dogen did not last long- but he was a powerful character - like a small bit of very intense color in a painting that stands out. Not faceless at all.
And maybe random people could have collected Jacob's ashes, or brought John's body- but it made a lot more sense for Jacob's chosen helper to do all the things she did. Also, I don't know who else could have forgiven Ben on Jacob's behalf- it had to be someone who had suffered greatly by losing him. There may be a bit more of her story in the hospital as well that we will see, to round out her history.
redshirts only last one episode,max.
jt, did you call them dark grey shirts back in your b/w days? it was only b/w because of your tv right?
Ah- the old days 2C! Yes, it was just because we did not yet have a color TV- I didn't even know Star Trek was in color till I saw it in reruns years later. What a shock!
And- gasp- this was rotary phone communication time- paper letters in the mail time- so there was no term that I knew of for folks who die "with some quickness", as Daniel Danger is fond of saying.
Heheh, me too JT, my first experience with ST:TOS was in B&W. X-D
Yes, I'd agree with that too, that Redshirts were originally only in one ep, and not strategic to the ep or story except for being a convenient Extra meant for dying in that particualr scenario.
Tx for the NPR link Memphish.
In the end, Ilana and Bram were much more redshirts than Dogen. Dogen actually gave us information we could not have figured out ourselves. Bram and Ilana did not.
any where...
oops I forgot capcom is one of the old broads too. ;)
Like ole Sceve. . .he was a redshirt for sure.
Although Lost does have a bad habit of dressing it's main characters in red shirts right before it offs them.
i was born in 1974, but my grandparents didn't have a color tv till the mid 80's, so i've seen my share of black and white tv. I do remember rotary phones and getting paddled at school.
if illanna is a redshirt then so is charlotte. I gotta think they will explain why she was so bandaged up but maybe not...
Capcom: Yep, grew up on B&W! When the NBC Color Peacock came on, that was so special! LOL And rotary phones with 2 letters first (DI(amond) 5-5555). The list can go on and on. I got a 1950 book for my birthday and it sure made me realize I was born a loooong time ago!
If you get to have sex with Sawyer, you are not a redshirt. Just my opinion. ;-) (And for the record I despise Charlotte so that was gross.)
2c- I forgot the boone babysitter thing, thanks...but that was pre-island, and jacob said their pasts don't matter. i was under the theory that only on-island evil matters, otherwise, just about every one of our 815ers could be/should be stuck upon their deaths (including Ana Lucia)
and
I do remember rotary phones and getting paddled at school.
Ditto! I thankfully avoided the paddle!
LOL, yep I'm an old broad too SG. :o)
Yes, the color peacock, what a neat thing that was, heehee. And those variety shows were sure purdy in color as well! I loved those shows especially the Dean Martin show, cuz it was all about drinkin' and smokin', haha. But the girl singers always looked so pretty and colorful in their gowns on those shows.
Ahem, back to Lost, at this point I'm so confused, I really don't know what to think. And now Ilana dead?! Jacob should have just killed MIB and been done with him.
i dont think jacob is allowed to kill mib
Another old broad here! My sister had a rotary phone into at least the 80's. I don't remember when she finally replaced it but it was much later than the rest of us in the family. I remember using it one day and realized that I had almost forgotten how!
2c - I agree, I don't think Jacob is allowed to kill MIB, either. And havong someone else do it for him would go against his argument about people being inherently good vs evil.
i was watching the planet of the apes where the humans worship an a-bomb under ground and use telepathy. The all hail the bomb and the holy fallout guy's reminded me of jacob and mib. They said they don't use or believe in violence, we make our enemies kill each other. The distinction between not harming people and using high pitched sounds and mental mojo to make people use violence is paper thin if not completely non-existent .
i got the paddle beat.i went to christian school and we had to go do church during school, i was once hit in the head with the offering bag filled with money by my teacher, for talking. I was a different age
Maybe Desmond needed to run down FS Locke to stop on-island Flocke. And maybe he seems so chill about being kidnapped because he's waiting for the effects of dead Locke to kick in. Although this means that he knows about a connection between the FS and 2007.
*sigh*
I'm an oldie-but-goodie, too. My parents got their first color TV in 1963 when I was 9 years old. All of the neighbors came by to see it.
2C- I thought you must have gone to a Catholic type school-why is it that religious schools feel more free to do violence I wonder? I never saw any student hit in any schools I went to.
On the other hand, students in my son's schools did things like throw chairs around-which did not happen in my time in the same type school systems.
Guess there's a balance between overkill control by the school, and total lack of control.
I enjoyed your podcast Dave & Steve- good luck in NY!
I know that Jacob can't/won't kill MIB, I was just venting. :-B
Given that the dynamite in the Black Rock is notoriously unstable, why didn't Richard, et. al. decide to get explosives from the barracks first? Why get the stable stuff only after someone blosw up and someone else destroys what's left of the unstable stuff?
Oh- dynamite is always just more fun! I watched an interview Matthew Fox did on Jimmy Kimmel- he talked about how his father used dynamite to open up a creek on the ranch that got frozen up sometimes and what a (hmm -bad pun) blast it was.
New tweet from CC- the 5/13 Lost show at Royce Hall LA is going to be Lost music with Michael Giacchino, a preview showing of the last epp before the finale and cast members appearing. Don't know about tickets yet---
Per Carlton- when and where of ticket purchase info soon.
I'm so there! Just waiting to find out when tickets going on sale. Proceeds to benefit the Colburn School of Performing Arts.
That event at Royce Hall sounds awesome.Great music, and an early screening.
I had only seen black & white tv,until one night at a friend's
home, I saw color for the first time.
It was a Wizard of Oz moment. I was like,uh...what???
I also grew up when paddles were not just for rowing. In the fourth grade,I made a bet with my teacher, that I didn't miss any questions on a Math quiz.(one swat for each wrong answer)I missed 4.
After 3 blows,he had mercy, and let me go sit down.To this day,I am not a gambling man.I am also Mathematicaly challenged. In the later however,I may be mistaking co-incidence for fate.
did you guys notice that pierre chang had both arms working in everbody loves hugo. This seems to show that it's not exactly clear cut that the two timelines share the same past before the jughead incident in 1977. if they did, chang would not have his arm in both timelines. mikhails eye and jacks scar both show bizarre course corrections to match the timelines together, so if the two timelines diverged after 1977 chang would be armless in both. The only thing i can think of is that the sideways is devoid of jacob's influence retroactively, across the whole timeline and that drastically changed things even before 1977 or the lack of time traveling 815'ers in the sideways changed the timeline before 1977, both of which seem to show the island sunk for some other reason...
does this also relate to chang having both arms in the pearl video. They seemed to show the swan in the pearl video and described the physiological experiment in the swan. We all know that pierre chang lost his arm before the swan was actually built. So was the pearl video from the sideways or some other alt, is that why the reports from the pearl seemed to go to nowhere, because that building no longer exited in the lost 1.0 timeline?Perhaps in the sideways there was actually a place those bank tubes where being delivered to.
i was thinking that certain landmarks or equipment could travel to a timeline it's not supposed to be in if a time flasher was touching it. For instance. If the donkey wheel was turned right as the black rock was crashing on the island, the ship would travel through time and space with richard because he is touching it, just as the vw bus from 1977 traveled with hurley from 1977 to 2007...so would this work on other things. If i touched the tarawet statue right as a time flash happened, would it travel with me wherever i went? That may be why daniel said to look for landmarks during the time flashes. Would the swan travel to any timeperiod if desmond was inside it during a time flash. Where do u draw the line between sawyer holding a rope from the well, after a time flash, in a time before the well or the rope existed. Or how much mass can you take with you on a timeflash?

We heard whispers in the tunnels on the way to the temple. Were the people at the temple dead? Or some of them anyway.
If time on the island is all wonky, and we have evidence that it is, it may not matter whether you die on the island in the past or in the future. Whether you're dead yet or not, your spirit is still trapped on the island in the present (and in all presents) as a whisper. If so, that's creepy.
RE: Locke - My first reaction was that x-Des was getting revenge for Locke throwing him down the well. But now I can see that it could also be to "wake him up" like Charlie did to him. Thanks! Dunno which way I'm leaning...
Thanks also for illuminating that the bag Hurley took was Ilana's bag of ash. Makes a lot of sense!

Anyone have any new theories regarding the random island boy?
So far I haven't heard a theory that grabs my attention so I go "Oh!" I have a feeling the real explanation behind the boy(s) will be like that.
Just Thinking said:
maybe they used it because Wonka is a bit of a deceiver and showman, who takes his "candidates" through the factory to determine who is worthy to succeed him
Oooh! That's a great observation! I agree that it might be the parallel.
I like the idea of not being finished with Ilana yet. Being dead may work in her favor.
Libby's going to be on House this week.
I apologize for losing track of whose theory this is. . .
But basically someone us there is thinking that sideways Locke may be able to bleed over into the Island timeline and take over the body MIB is now occupying. . .
Except didn't they bury Locke's actual body? The body MIB is in, isn't Locke's body at all - it's just a clone of it.
Or did I miss something?
(OT: The Blind Side is really very good if any of you have missed it and I didn't realize it had a Lost Character in it - Cassiday was in there in a reasonable large supporting role - I had no idea.)
Lost2010- I don't know how MIB-island Locke relates to f/sideways Locke. It was weird that f/side Locke encouraged Ben to go for the power again in the f/side- kind of MIBish. But yeah, Flocke can dissolve into Smokey- he's not Locke, unless Desmond knows some way to turn him back.
OT also- for the UKers who saw the new Dr. Who this week- did your version say Prisoner Zero- or was it the Prisoner Zed?
@JT - Oh, I see. So you're saying that the John Locke in the FS might actually be MIB in FS and not John Locke at all. Not that FS-John Locke is going to take over MIB on the island and make him nice. I had it turned around.
Good catch and thoughts on Chang's arm 2C!
thanks capcom,i appreciate your slant on tings too
i still think they will answer the dave question, hurley isn't crazy so why would he have an imaginary friend?
Hi all, I watched a clockwork orange for the first time this weekend. first wow that movie is advanced for today, i cant imagine how that went over in the 1970's.
what was room 23 brainwashing people to believe? Karl and Walt were in the room but i dont think either one changed what the believed before they went in.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID.
Thanks for all you do.
God bless you, and your wonderful family.
Happy Bday David, thanks for making this site home for so many of us.
Happy Birthday to David...where ever you are! Hope you enjoying your day. Thanks for starting TLC for us!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Belated Birthday David P. Thanks so much for creating this blog. Hope all is well with you and your family.
Happy LOST Day!
karl seemed pretty heavily influenced by the room 23 film, he was spouting off about how great jacob was after it...
a clockwork orange i think relates to lost in the question of free will. After alex was brainwashed in the film, he was defenseless against his old droogs. The irony is they had to reverse the effects in the film to seemingly restore his free will or the very least his ability to defend himself. It seems to relate to my idea that the others pretty much forego their candidacy, after they join because they are no longer really flexing free will, but as desmond said there is always a choice so whoknows....
i wonder if hugo's name is a nod to the award for science fiction writing.
Happy LOST Day! And happy last LOST day before the hiatus!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubik
if you havent read the philip k dick novel ubik read this wiki. This novel almost seems more pertinent to lost than valis.
here is a small excerpt from the wiki
When Runciter, Chip, and the others reach Mick’s moon base, they discover that the assignment is a trap, presumably set by Hollis. A bomb explosion apparently kills Runciter without significantly harming the others. They rush back to Earth to place him in half-life.
Afterwards, the group begins to experience strange shifts in reality. Consumables, such as milk and cigarettes, begin to deteriorate prematurely. Also, the group sees Runciter's face on coins and receives strange messages from him in writing and on television. Most of these messages imply that Runciter is in fact alive, while the others are in half-life, or "cold-pac" as it is informally called. Group members who separate from the group are found dead, in a gruesome state of decomposition.
The reality gradually shifts backward in time until the group finds itself in a world resembling the United States in 1939. They try throughout to deduce what is causing these strange occurrences, prevent each other from dying, and find a mysterious product called Ubik, which is advertised in every time period they enter. Messages from Runciter indicate that Ubik may be their only hope of survival.
Ultimately, Joe Chip learns that Runciter, in fact, was the sole survivor of the explosion on the moon, and that his messages to the group are the result of his attempts to communicate with them while they are in half-life. The regressing world in which they find themselves is discovered to be the product of Jory Miller, another half-lifer whom Runciter encounters earlier in the story while communicating with Ella. It is revealed that Jory devours the life force of other people who are in suspended animation to prolong his own present existence. Of the group of anti-psychics and technicians, only Joe Chip eludes him, aided by the substance called Ubik. This substance, whose name is derived from the word "ubiquity", has the property of preserving people who are in half-life. Joe Chip is instructed in its use by Ella Runciter, who is en route to a reincarnation.
In the living world, Glen Runciter encounters several coins showing Joe Chip's face. He suspects that this is "just the beginning."
maybe smokey prolongs his existence with the souls(em energy) he devours?
i think there will be some revalation about the pallatte drops and food in general on the island. I think it's curious that 16 year old crackers from the orchid were still edible. I think it might relate to how people perceive time passing on the island. It's almost the reverse of the food in ubik. I also think there may be some timeloop stuff involved with the same food drop coming to the island over and over. Not the same stuff, the same actual shipment going through the magnetic field and just arriving at different times over and over. Maybe there are peak times that occur over and over when you time flash. Like the vile vortices, but rather than places but times. For instance, a time flash spot may be when desmond failed to push the 108 button in time. Perhaps the 815'ers are special and time flash because they arrived at the island during an EM event. Rousseau seemed to arrive during one of those time's and that's why jin time flashed to that storm. I think richard also arrived during an EM event. The time flashes never went to the bring down times on the island, like between 1992-2001, say dan talked to desmond in the hatch in 2001. Perhaps locke flirting with not pushing the button the first time during lockdown created one of those peak moment in time with an EM event, right as the food drop was happening. Perhaps the peak times correspond to a certain interval in time like the food drop schedule?
