The Lost Community Book Club - Finale

The first TLC Book Club has come to an end. With the new game happening and the new episodes on the horizon, the Book Club will officially be on hiatus until May. We'll pick up then with Of Mice and Men, Carrie and Lord of the Flies, as well as any new books deemed worthy to be added to the mix.

In the meantime, you can e-mail your ideas to Melissa_Lossa at piper.emily@gmail.com. The last few months have been a blast - thanks to everyone who took part in the podcasts and the online discussions. Hopefully, we'll get some new literary allusions in Season Four!

Don't forget, Lost Season 4 begins January 31st at 9:00 PM

Great new avatar Maven! I heartily endorse the plans for the Book Club. And I really hope we get some new reading material for the new, if short season.

The latest mobisode is very disappointing. Why haven't we had any Kate or Sawyer or Sayid or Claire in the mobisodes?

Melissa_Lossa said...

Yes, please - if anyone spots a literary reference, let me know! I'll keep a running list, so we'll be ready at the break. :)

Oh, and hi, Jess! ;)

Woohoo, I've just found out that Lost will be shown in the UK on Sunday 3 February at 9:00pm, so just a few days more wait for me.

I'm going to try and resist the temptation to download it via Bittorrent, but I may end up loosing the internal struggle !

Here are some tips if you want to throw a LOST party.

Unknown said...

I've got a crazy theory about the promo shot for the pre-Season 4 clip show (here).

It's sort of my cryptoquip theory of LOST survival.

We know that Jack and Kate survive to make it back to the mainland. They are both standing, with primarily their right arms visible. We also know that, according to Desmond, Charlie's sacrifice earned Claire rescue.

So let's say that standing figures survive. Standing figures facing to the right of the photo (or their left) get rescued. Standing figures facing to the left of the photo, then, could reasonably be expected to be left behind.

Seated figures die, although the place they die could still be determined by the direction they face.

The two characters with conflicted posture are Locke, Desmond and Sun. Locke's connection to the Island is such that would could expect a strange continued relationship there. Desmond's time fluctuations might add a level of complexity to his fate. And Sun does in fact represent two individuals in this photo, so the fate of her child is unknown.

In summary:

RESCUED, SURVIVE:
Hurley, Claire, Kate, Jack, Juliet, Desmond (?)

RESCUED, DIE:
Ben

ABANDONED, SURVIVE:
Jin, Sayid

ABANDONED, DIE:
Sawyer, Sun

?:
Locke

I should probably get some sleep. I've obviously gone completely bonkers.

Amused2bHere said...

TBP, I really hope you are not on to something. As much as I want the best for Jack and Kate and whoever gets off the island, I can't handle the thought of a dead Sawyer! Say it ain't so!

RIP, TLCBook Club, until we meet again. Btw, I just finished Carrie. I think I understand now why Juliet loved the book so much. It's different from the movie, yet not in very substantive ways. I guess that's a discussion that will have to wait for another time. :)

Thanks again to Melissa_Lossa and Passafist for all they did to make the Book Club happen. It sure did fill in the time in a constructive way.

Those of you following Cloverfield happenings more closely than I am probably are already aware of it, but if you aren't, our very own Dennis was interviewed by NPR last week about it. I was riding down the road, minding my business listening to NPR:Movies podcast and there he was. You can read the transcript or listen to it here.

I want a Lost Community border for my plate, too! Although, it'll have to go on my imaginary car for right now.....

We've missed you around here!

Is anyone else starting to get REALLY antsy for the new season? I had the last two season premieres spoiled for me beforehand, so I am avoiding ALL spoilers this time around. It's so hard!

Thank god I have Cloverfield tomorrow to take some of pressure of. Mr. Mel and I are skipping out of work a little early to check it out. :) Anyone else going tomorrow?

I dunno about Cloverfield. My nephews and I really didn't know what to say after it was over. Parts of it were definitely scary and fun, but the ending and lack of details left us flat. :-\

maven said...

Hey guys: I was watching the 11pm local NBC news last night and they did a piece on the crowd at the Chinese Theater showing of Cloverfield. Guess who they showed TWICE: Our own Dennis!

memphish said...

My take on Cloverfield Capcom is that for what it is it does a fantastic job at it. Yet but for the JJ Abrams connection I never would have seen this movie. This style of movie is just not my cup of tea. It's really all about the experience of it. If anyone wants to see, go to the theaters because there's no way it will translate at home. And for LOST fans be sure to stay through the credits to hear a great piece by Michael Giacchino.

maven said...

Here's the next installment of TVGuide.com's series on the LOST characters: Michael

Capcom said...

Agreed, Memphish. And I was really blown away by the end credit soundtrack!

The thing that bugged us the most I guess, is that the boys and I followed all the crazy build-up, with the websites, the background story, etc. It seem like it was building up for some big reveals concerning the Tagruato/TIDO junk, not to mention how the monster got awakened, the Slusho crap and all, and the boys were really disappointed that that didn't all culminate with the movie the way it seemed it was going to.

I think without all the pre-release hype they would have been a lot more forgiving of the type of movie that it turned out to be. That is, pretty much just a raw, home-movie about something that happened to some rich yuppies. Also, the big send-up about how this was going to be "America's Monster" fell flat. So far. We'll see what kind of info comes out, if any, in the coming weeks or months.

You know, boys want to see the monsters and know the details! :o) So did I. I'm tired of teasing mysteries that never get solved.

memphish said...

I'm sorry to hear that following the game left things flat Capcom. I didn't follow it. I kept up with Dennis posting but I don't know what Targuato/TIDO junk is and didn't really care what the monster was going to look like, but then I'm not a young boy. I went in with basically zero expectations and enjoyed the experience though as I said this won't make my all time favorite movie list.

At the showing of the movie I went to at least 75% and maybe more of the audience was male. I thought that was interesting. I went at noon on Friday. I wonder why all these guys weren't working? :-D

Capcom said...

That is a good question! :-D

Joseph Finchum said...

Okay so I have something on LOST timeline type stuff.

I have been... in prep for the new season, been watch the entire series from the beginning. I am almost done with Season 2 again, and I noticed something.

My problem, once again, lies with Nikki and Paulo.

In the S03 episode devoted to N & P, we see them find the pearl and forcefully open the latches on the doors.

Now in "?"
Yemi vision tells Eko to bring the axe with him, and the only reason he needs it, is to get into the Pearl. He has to hit the latches with the axe in order to open it. But when N & P were there, way before Locke and Eko find it, they didn't have nearly as hard a time opening it. This couldn't have been mor than two to four weeks before L & E got there, so why is it so hard for them to get it open?

Was this just not sought out or did the plane falling possibly jam the latch in a closed position in order that Eko would need the Axe.

Just thinking in type again... sorry.

Joseph Finchum said...

Capcom,

Isaw the movie as well and the wher the monster came from is answered in the movie but in a round about sort of way. It is suggested by HUD, and in the very last shot of the film... Coney Island Ferris Wheel... you can see what I mean. If you want to know more let me know and I will email you or something, as I do not want to spoil it for anyone who has not seen it yet.

I don't know if this will appease your boys, but it might be worth a shot, so when they get to see it again, they can sit there going... Ooooooh so thats what happened.

Also something I had never noticed in the trailers, but it was there was that all of the curtains in the party pad at the beginning had the TIDO wave wave, (forget the artist) paintings on them. Was Rob going to be the V.P. of TIDO wave???

Amused2bHere said...

Well, saw Cloverfield tonight. I must say, that was quite an experience! JJ is right about one thing: King Kong it's NOT.

I didn't follow the stuff online too closely, just Dennis' site (which btw Maven it was very cool that you saw our Dennis on tv...way to go Dennis!) But I saw enough online to be familiar with Rob, Beth, Hud, Lilly, Marlena, and the whole hand held video camera concept. I enjoyed the movie, it was quite a ride.

I agree with Memphish, go see this one in the theaters, it just won't have the same impact on the small screen.

And stay to the end of the credits, there's something whispered at the end that is curious.

memphish said...

Ded that Nikki and Paolo thing with the Pearl entrance bugs me too. My only thought would be that once Tom moved the plane on top of the entrance he also did something to gum up the works. A pretty lame explanation, but it's all I got. The writers did not address it in the commentary.

Capcom said...

Thanks for the interesting comments about the movie Ded! What I mean about where it came from, is wanting to learn more about the whole Ganu-and-his-mom thing that is introduced on the Slusho site, and of course, the Slusho, and what was it about the Chuai station that possibly started the whole mess, AND the dang seabed nectar. The boys were looking forward to that being addressed to know more. I'm going to tell them about the "thing" dropping (I didn't see the non-highlighted part on Dennis' blog befoer the movie in his hints! Stupid me!), but I don't think that they will care to see it again until it's ever on TV in the future.

Good call about the Pearl hatch! I also guess that it could be chalked up to Tom messing up the door with the plane.

Village, heheh, yeah, I got an email from Ethan Haas too! I forgot to ask you all if you did too. I didn't do anything with it though, and I might have deleted it.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Mr. Mel and I saw Cloverfield on Friday. I loved it - I thought it was a really original take on the classic monster movie. I agree that I would have liked a little more explanation and resolution at the end. However, I understand that it would have killed the concept, and I'm okay with that.

Definitely stay until the end to hear the message, and then go to Dennis's site to find out what it said.

Mr. Mel got very motion-sick during the movie and spent most of the runtime with his eyes closed. Poor kid! He said he's looking forward to seeing it again on a smaller screen, when he can pause it if it gets too intense.

The motion didn't bother me too much, although even I had a couple of moments where I had to take a deep breath.

All in all, it's a very intense experience. Very real. I highly recommend it!

maven said...

I think if I'm going to see that movie I'm going to wear my motion sickness wristbands (that works on the principle of acupressure). I wear them on cruises and they work great.

Capcom said...

Sweeeet "Missing Moments" today. I like the "Jaws" music at the end too. :o) I wish that these things were longer!

The wristbands really work Maven? I wonder if they would help with nausea with headaches. I'll have to try to find some. I've tried the accupressure on the wrist by pressing, but I don't seem to be able to make that work.

maven said...

Here's TVGuide.com's installment on Desmond.

maven said...

Capcom: They REALLY work! You can find them at any drugstore, I think.

I also saw the latest mobisode! I really think it's a shout-out to the FIND815 game, don't you? Also, I think it's Ben's x-rays in that envelope.

memphish said...

Discussion of latest Missing Moment below. Skip if you aren't ready to know.

*********************************

I agree about the envelope contents Maven. It's really an interesting mobisode. Amelia knows enough about Juliet to know that she doesn't cry without a lot of provocation. A little burn on the wrist, much like a dislocated shoulder, is not enough to bring tears to this Ice Princess.

It also sounds like Juliet and Amelia have talked about what exactly they're up to on the Island, and promises by Ben in regards to health seem to be part of that. Discovering that you can get sick on the Island (assuming of course that you don't count fetuses killing you and themselves as getting sick) seems to be step 1 in unraveling whatever story Ben's been selling to everyone in order to cement their commitment to the Island. I really hope we get to see Amelia in Season 4.

Capcom said...

Thanks Maven! I'll go look for some today.

Yes, it's interesting that we have a link between the game and show today, it seems. May just be a coincidence, but then again...

Some people take literally that TPTB said that any mention of "that story" (don't want ot spoil Mobi) could be just a metaphor for lost things and mysteries, but I hope that it's more than that in the long run.

Capcom said...

Hmmmm, interesting thoughts Memphish! I agree.

maven said...

Well, quite a few Others seemed to have found out about Ben's illness. And that seems to be the catalyst for him loosing control over "his people".

Also, the fact that Amelia calls Juliette "Julie" does show some closeness and deeper relationship between these two women.

memphish said...

Tom called her that too in Not in Portland when he was trying to figure out if she really wanted Ben killed.

Maybe this is why Karl is on Ben's "bad" list. Maybe he's the one who told everyone about Ben's tumor bringing things to a head. At a minimum I bet he told Alex who used it against Ben and forced an outing of his plans. Hooray! I think we've finally figured out why Karl was being punished.

Amused2bHere said...

nah, I really think it was just Ben's paternal protectiveness being expressed as only Ben could: the boy wants to do *what* with my daughter? Off with his head!

After all, it's not like he can dismiss it with a 'kids will be kids' mentality. I wonder what sex ed was like in the Island schools? hmmm...

memphish said...

I don't know A2BH, but you raise interesting questions that I'm not sure will ever be resolved in that:

A) Is it not the case that Alex and Karl don't know that the reason Juliet is on the Island is to solve the problem that you get pregnant you die?

B) Is there not adequate DI birth control on Island and education about how to use it?

C) What about Juliet and Goodwin?

D) Would the rest of the Others accept locking up Karl and beating him to prevent Alex from getting pregnant?

E) Who raised Karl and why aren't they protesting his treatment by Ben in this manner?

Sigh. The Others just give me more and more and more questions.

Look, I saw Cloverfield and loved it. Why? Because how many times do you "experience" a movie??? Seriously. You don't WATCH it. You are practically "living" it through Hud. And what's more, with a budget of $30 million, they did wonders with the destruction of New York and the monster (etc).

And honestly, what more could you want?? A monster movie consists of:

1. a monster
2. survival
3. people fleeing the scene
4. one way to escape
5. mysterious reason for the monster's appearance
6. vague, yet fairly typical explanation of where the monster came from

and did this movie have all that?? yes. check, check, check, check, check and check.

oh and did i mention the "damsel in distress"??

duh.

Long story, short, I knew (sorta) what type of movie I was going to see. What I didn't expect was to see much in way of special effects and the monster. I was pleasantly surprised, actually.

And with it being in 1st-person and shot with a hand-held cam-corder, it made everything feel just a bit more "real".

Anyway, I believe that it accomplished what it set out to do. It was "Godzilla" for the U.S. Plain and simple.

And as for the bit at the end of the credits........I've been told (and heard myself) like 4 different things.

email me if you have the actual answer to what is heard at buttmonkey73@yahoo.com.

thanks.

And ladies and gentlemen, seriously......if the film fell short.....what exactly were you expecting??? (no offense)

Unknown said...

did i mention, i'm going to see it AGAIN tonight???

hahahahaha.

yeah, i have no life.

Amused2bHere said...

The more I think about it, the more I agree that the movie was an awesome experience. I hope JJ makes more concerning this monster.

Takes a Village, I think Amelia's name was revealed either through the cast list at IMBD. In other news, I'm thinking that with the "enhanced" Season 1-3 recap show, ABC is test-driving the "2.0" format that G4 channel will use when it starts running LOST reruns this coming fall.

Not that G4 will scrap it, but I suspect everyone wants to know how it would be received.

Hey, gang -

I've been a bit out of the loop here and at Oceanic Conspiracies, so maybe everybody already knows this, but I just saw on Lostpedia that ABC is airing Through the Looking Glass next Wednesday at 9, with text on the lower third of the screen that will "let viewers in" on clues in the show, as well as give back story to catch new viewers up for Season Four.

I saw that Kyle said something about an enhanced recap show - I don't know if he was talking about the same thing or not.

Mea Culpa if this is old news!

Now I'm worried I've already set my dvr for 8-10. That's what TV Guide.com has. My onair cable guide is only going up to 4:00pm Wed. and then says to be announced for all channels.
Thurs. nights show is 9-11 right?

Capcom said...

Here in Knox,TN(EST) it's supposed to air from 8-10 on Thurs. 8-9 is the recap, and 9-10 is Ep-401.

Melissa_Lossa said...

What the?! That mobisode was crazy!

I have no idea what to make of that.

Here in Michigan (EST), TTLG starts at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, according to TV Guide. The Lost recap starts at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

You're right. I double checked. It's 9 on Wednesday and 8 on Thursday. For me too. whew
I have a terrible memory anymore. I can't even remember what time I set my dvr for a week ago. lol
And yes that mobisode was pretty wild.

Capcom said...

Oh right, sorry about forgetting the Wednesday thing, it starts here, EST, at 9:00 also.

#13 missing piece. So far 86% thought it was awesome. Me too.

Why isn't it 100%?

Hello Losties!! New season starts Thursday!!! Yippie...I cannot wait and I hope the writers strike ends soon!!

Hope everyone is doing well so far this year!!

Peace & Namaste!

Melissa_Lossa said...

Hey, thrasher - long time no see!

maven said...

Wow, Thrasher! How are you? Hope to see you around more often starting tomorrow!

Yea! Starting tomorrow evening we'll have a lot more to talk about. Of course, I'll complain again about being 3 hours behind most of you and very few will be online when I'm done watching the enhanced TTLG tomorrow! Whine, whine, whine! LOL

TVGuide.com has a photo slide show of Memorable Lost Quotes.

Amazon has LOST Blu-Ray for $40.

maven said...

I saw that Memphish! I have already bought the regular DVDs. Then, this weekend, we got the Playstation3 with the Blue-Ray player (we finally decided that Blue-Ray "won" the contest)! But that deal is almost too good to pass us!

maven said...

It's so exciting to see my "To Do List" on my Directv DVR and see LOST again!

Chicago Trib TV reviewer previews S4 and talks to Damon. I haven't read it yet, but she says in the disclaimer that there are no spoilers, and she's good about warning you if there are as she did in her previous post which I also have not read.

memphish said...

I quickly scanned the article, and it was awesome. If you don't want the writer's impression of the first two episodes of S4 skip the first 3-4 paragraphs, but be sure to read her transcript of the interview with Damon. It looks very interesting.

maven said...

FYI and a good laugh: My friend, Ken Levine has posted a "summary" of LOST on his blog.

TakesaVillage said...

To celebrate the beginning of season 4,I've got a smokin' hot new avi.
Time to gather round.Welcome back everybody.

memphish said...

Good avi Takes A Village. Does the hat mean only you can prevent being pounded into a tree?

I'll look forward to Ken's post Maven. I check his blog every day.

I bet we'll have lots of S4 preview articles out there in the next 2 days. It's just over 37 hours until new LOST!!!!!

Do I want to read Doc's new column...? I dunno! I know he won't spoil anything, but do I even want to know "things I should remember" when watching the premiere?

I'm going spoiler-free this season (as many are), and I just don't know...

memphish said...

Here's the link for Doc Jensen. It's not spoilery unless some of the things Doc included he included because he knows something. But everything he discusses is something we've already seen. The last page of the article is a run-down with what happened with Doc and his wife last year. You may want tissues. The very last paragraph is maybe a tiny bit spoilery, but not really since you know the facts from TTLG that relate to it.

Hey all! Long time. Can't believe we're days (oh, heck...hours) away from the new semi-season. Looking forward to hashing it out with you all!

To help pass the time 'til Thursday night, why not check out our recap of this past Monday night's two-hour premiere of 24 Season 7:

Talk to you all tomorrow!

What is up Losties? A tremendous Wednesday to you. How has everyone been? Long time no post, been in deep lurk mode and work mode as well. I am so pumped up for S4. I just hope it lasts longer than 8 episodes. I was reading somewhere that the window to finish those last 8 episodes of S4 is closing quickly. I hope the writers strike ends yesterday.
Is anyone going to watch the enhanced S3 finale tonight? I am, I need a little refresher before S4 begins. I look forward to discussing S4 with you.

Have a good one.

memphish said...

Hey Erich and JGZ350! Glad to see you both in time for the premier.

I posted this at Oceanic Conspiracies, but in case anyone isn't following over there -- Tomorrow's episode 4.1 is set to run until 2 minutes past the hour, so you may want to set your recording device yourself instead of trusting Tivo or your cable company not to cut off the end.

TakesaVillage said...

Thanks Memphis,
Yes,I think He may have found it in all the strewn luggage and said "That is so me."I've been reading your Blog;Memphis is Lost the past few months. There is always something
interesting to think about.
I know many who Tivo.Missing the last 2 minutes of Lost could make a person lose it.
JGZ350,
As Jack would say,"You need to be in the writers room yesterday." Time is running out.

Morning all: Here's 48 Unanswered Questions (for the remaining 48 episodes) from the LA Times.

As soon as Find815 is over at Oceanic Conspiracies, I guess we'll all be over here to give all our 2 cents as to what we just saw. Hi, erich and jgz350...welcome back. I'm sure we'll be "seeing" a lot of our great Lost Community soon!

Hello TLC!!

Nice to see people finding their way back! Thanks maven & memphish for the great Lost related links. I really enjoyed them!

takesavillage, nice new avi!!! LOFL, memphish.. "Only you can prevent being pounded into a tree".

memphish said...

Tivo users check your boxes. From e at Long Live Locke: The HORROR! I just checked my TV downstairs and it was NOT going to record the premiere?!?! The first hour recap show was set to tape, but the premiere itself, "The Beginning of the End," was NOT (they are two separate entries in Tivo... not one two-hour show). D'OH! So you all better check your To Do lists on your machines. My upstairs Tivo had it right. It makes no sense.

And don't forget the extra 2 minutes. I know I've said this repeatedly, but I don't want 10 posts of my Tivo cut it off before it was over on Friday.

JGZ350 said...

Thanks for the heads up on that memphish, I will adjust my DVR accordingly. How have you been?

memphish said...

Things in Memphis as pretty good JGZ350, though the weather can't make it its mind. We had 70 degrees and gale force winds yesterday and now we might get ice or snow tonight. Never a dull moment. But at least no mosquitos -- yet!

Madhouse said...

memphish,
Thanks for tip on the tivo -- i will make double sure it's set.

And now for a really stupid question... why did Charlie lock himself in the transmitter room and die? Why didn't he run out, jump in the water and swim back to the boat with Desmond?

Thanks for answering (if anyone does). Can't wait for tomorrow!!!
