Ewww, I just checked the Apollo site that someone mentioned in the previous blog. It has indeed apparently turned into something gross, by what the front page says. That's all I'm going to look at, and I guess that I'd better take it off my Lost favorites list, so my nephews won't go there. :-p So sad, the death of another TLE website.

On a cheerier note, Ded, don't we know now that the DI failed because of the Purge? I figured (after that episode) that that's how they "failed": they just failed to get along with the natives, got gassed, the Hostiles took over, and the Hanso Foundation never heard from them again. Am I wrong in thinking that? Tx.

DeDJeZTeR said...

Chuck,

I e-mailed Amused back already, and I only just now got your Myspace message.
Yes that sounds cool. I'm in.

Capcom,

I think that the purge is just the beginning of the end. It is not until the first rescue attempt (the one I think will fail) that they find out all the info. It is all the same event in my opinion.

DeDJeZTeR said...

If they do an Alpert flashback, they should do it like they did with greatest hits and each flash should be a different time period since he doesn't seem to age.

DeDJeZTeR said...

How do we fit Harold into the finale without him being in the casket.

How about they clip back to the real world where we see Michael and Walt looking like they are living on the run, and Walt is in a trance like state and Michael is shaking his limp body screaming Walllt Waaaalllllltttt!

DeDJeZTeR said...

On Locke leaving the Island,

Locke never leaves the Island. At the end of the episode he skulks off into the jungle aain. He is off to become the male counterpart to Danielle. Later on we will find Danielle and Locke shacked up in the jungle. Alex and Karl in Otherville since they like it there. On the beach we find Rose and Bernard living the sweet life and living a raunchy jungle man (Tarzan) kinda fantasy that none of want to see anyway.

Charlie would have been dead, had it not been for Desmond saving Charlie he would have been dead a few times. The flashes were always meant as someone else said (sorry can't remember who) Desmond saving Charlie was meant to build Charlie up to the point were he could except his own death when the time came. Maybe Naomi's people were drawn in by the note on the birds leg. That note is why the freighter is looking for the island and a quick search found a man named Desmond Hume who was lost in the Pacific Ocean, along with the only picture Penny had which is a copy of the picture Desmond had. This is Naomi's cover story she would have used when she landed her helicopter in Otherville. Which is where I would have landed if I flew over and looked for civilization.

I agree with the Danielle Rouge agent idea, she specifically said they changed course to check out the signal.

DeDJeZTeR said...

I think that the Natives don't live in the Dharma town. You never see Alpert sitting in his chair. I think it is only outside help like Juliet and others that live there. This of course includes Ben and Tom, but not Alpert. He could live at the Temple and is onlt there now because they are downgraded to tents.

Talking to myself here.... lol

capcom said...

OK, I think I get what you mean Ded. Mittlejerk would not really know what happened to the DI right away, since the new guys in town were not keeping up communications with The World? Just their own peeps? So then TWM makes a few attempts to get to the island to find out what's up, and finally gets through...in the episode that we haven't seen yet...and maybe they arrive as the "bad guys" that Ben is telling the truth about for the first time in his adult life.

But still, once the DI is virtually all dead from the Purge, the DI is over, as far as their presence on the island is concerned. To The World, it may look like just a communications problem and that the DI is still in operation. But in reality, Dharmatown is history, and Othertown is now on the map. And after TWM figures out what happened, I think that it still all comes down to the Purge=TheEnd for the DI island project to save the world. Perhaps what Ben said about the DI not being able to get along with the original inhabitants is the core of their failure. I guess, until we know some more. :o)

And yeah, can't wait to see that Temple!

Juliet knew that Ben was jamming their signals. In "Greatest Hits" we have this exchange:
Sayid If Naomi's boat is only 18 miles offshore...I know if we eliminate Danielle's signal they will hear us.
Juliet No they won't.
Sayid And why is that?
Juliet We're jamming it.
Jack What?
Juliet Ben is using one of the DHARMA stations to block all of the signals off of the Island except for ours.

In TTLG we learn:
Charlie Here's a better question to ask, Cyclops. Why did your little friend Ben tell you people that this entire station was flooded when it isn't? Or why these 2 have been jamming transmissions off the island?
Mikhail What? Is that true?

Greta That's Ben.
Mikhail I'll get it.
Ben You have to understand. Everything I did, I did for the island.
Mikhail The island told you it was necessary for you to jam your own people?
Ben Yes it did. You've always been a loyalist, Mikhail.
Now I'm asking you to trust me...to trust Jacob who told me to do this.
Mikhail Why would Jacob ask you to lie to your own people?
Ben Because this island is under assault by forces stronger than anything its had to deal with in many many years and we are meant to protect it, Mikhail, by any means necessary. The jamming was for everyone's security. We are in a serious situation here.
Mikhail So why not trust me?
Ben I made a mistake. I should have told you and I apologize.

So why did Ben tell Juliet, a person who hadn't fully committed to the Island, about the jamming which had to have come post-Purpling or at least not long before the Purpling, but didn't tell Mikhail, a loyalist who was willing to shoot Mrs. Klugh and himself for the cause? Is Ben blinded by Juliet's really blue eyes, or has she made a committment we haven't seen? And is it real or is she playing Ben? And given that she knew about the jamming, why did she ever think she and Jack would be allowed to leave on the sub?

picsel said...

Here's a thought on the timeline discussion and how it could tie-in with the island (although i dont know as we were told it never would)

but TWM tells members of the new DI that people think the virus will destroy everybody else (or something to that effect)in 2006. He says that some people think they already have it.

Now, could this mean that the freighter coming to the island in December 05 could be the one to give the virus(or whatever it was TWM was doing i cant remember) to the DI. "a force stronger than anything they have had to deal with before?" - a big fat civilization killing virus.

It could fit in seeing as that would mean the Helgus Antonius could just be follwing the freighters course instead of the Black Rocks, because now he will know how to get to the island...

Darn! Missed the live podcast...oh well. At least I can listen in on the party.

I am looking forward to seeing Dedjezter and Chucklez this Sunday night. Of course with those two in the same room there might be an implosion, so if you hear a pop coming from Long Island you know what happened.

Anyone else care to join us to rewatch the finale?

picsel said...

i would. but i live in the UK lol

Amused2bHere said...

Picsel! I would love to play your game, whatever it turns out to be. Count me in.

Good luck on your tests. Priorities!

Oh, and I think Juliet knows even more than we've been let in on. Ben has included her in some very important loops, while leaving her out of others. But then master manipulators do that: they create many "circles of confidence" that pit people against each other so he can play both ends against the middle.

Amused2bHere said...

Picsel, lol, I think there are some good deals you can get from UK to NY (I can pick you up from JFK!)

thanks amused2bhere :)

Memphish: I got the sense from the Mikhail-Ben scene that, since Ben got caught in his lie, he had to salvage the situation as best he could by convincing Mikhail to trust him. I think that's why he ordered M. to kill Greta and Bonnie--because their lives weren't worth as much to him as Mikhail's continued loyalty.

Ever since Jacob asked Locke to help him, Ben has been in major damage control mode, acting ferally to keep as much power as possible by whatever suits him at the moment.

I mentioned it briefly in the podcast, but I've come to think Ben saw his march to the radio tower as almost a suicide mission. He must have known Jack would kill him if he couldn't be convinced to stop the rescue, but he went alone anyway. Maybe he felt that, if he failed in his mission to stop Jack, it didn't matter whether he lived or died. It's another reason he brought Alex back to her mother--to tie up loose ends and make sure she'd have someone to look after her, even if it was a sort of punishment.

I think it starts to explain why Ben would give the order NOT to kill Sayid, Jin and Bernard, but to convince Jack he had. He must have known how Jack would react if he thought his friends were dead, but Ben did nothing to save himself.

I think Ben sees that his days as leader are numbered (Jacob has chosen someone else), so he made one last ditch attempt to save the island. And if he failed, he was ready to die.

I hope they keep him around a while longer, though. I like the character.

Amused2bHere said...

erich, yeah I hope Ben survives to the end of the series.

And then gets either dies, or finally understands what he has done, and finds redemption. And then dies.

memphish said...

Good take on Ben's mission as a suicide mission Erich. I was certainly screaming at the TV for Jack to kill Ben at that point.

I read somewhere too that Ben taking Alex back to Danielle was ridding himself of the one person who was clouding his judgment. By ridding himself of responsibility for Alex, he could refocus on the Island/Jacob/whatever their mission is. Was that your site I read that on?

There are certainly a lot of questions that remain about what the Others are up to. Why was Klugh willing to die? What was she protecting? Why leave their homes for the temple as Alpert says? Why take some of the people from Flight 815, but not all of them? Why not eliminate the rest with your Dharma death gas so they can't leave the Island? Why tell Cindy what's going on, but none of the Fusies?

Amused2bHere said...

I so hope they use the Helgus Antonius as Naomi's ship. That would be so cool.

Good morning, Memphish!

Hi Amused2behere.

So here's my question for the board today.

When did Ben send Bonnie and Great to TLG?

Here are some key dates to choose from:
Day 44 - Nov. 4, 2004 - Walt taken from the raft
Day 49 - Nov. 9, 2004 - Ben and Juilet watch the Swan station from the Pearl as Paolo looks on
Day 52 - Nov. 12, 2004 - Michael taken by the Others
Day 58 - Nov. 18, 2004 - Ben caught in a net
Day 61 - Nov. 21, 2004 - Ben crawls into computer room in Swan during Lockdown
Day 64 - Nov. 24, 2004 - Michael frees Ben from The Swan
Day 67 - Nov. 27, 2004 - The Purpling
Day 70 - Nov. 30, 2004 - Tom says during fake pacemaker installation in Sawyer that since the Purpling the comms have been down

From Reuters this morning:

"Lost: The Complete Third Season -- The Unexplored Experience" follows December 11 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The 23-episode, seven-disc set comes with a one-on-one with star Matthew Fox, a featurette on "The Others," a documentary chronicling 24 hours in production and a selection of never-before-seen flashbacks. Also included are behind-the-scenes looks at 10 episodes, audio commentaries, deleted scenes and bloopers.

TheBookPolice said...

I was just coming in to post that, memphish. The story I read stated that the release date was originally going to be two weeks later, so we can always hope against hope that the date gets moved up again.

Does anyone know for what platforms the UBIsoft game will be released?

Dennis said...

picsel said... yeah its good that people are interested, i might ask a few people from Sledgeweb, they have people who make puzzles for a weekly game over there who might be able to help during the creation.

Have you ever played P4X the Riddle? It's very TLE-style puzzle solving - viewing source code, image manipulation, etc.

TheBookPolice said...

Disregard my last question. I looked it up (it's PS2/3, XBOX360, Wii and PC). I guess I should stop wondering if games will come out for Gamecube now that Wii is out there. Or sort of out there, considering I've never actually seen one on-the-shelf.

Dennis said...

TheBookPolice said... Does anyone know for what platforms the UBIsoft game will be released?

According to Lostpedia, CC said it will be "Not just for Xbox [360]; it'll also be PS3 and PC compatible."

Where did you see that it will be on Wii?

I'm guessing we won't find out any more about it until ComicCon.

memphish said...When did Ben send Bonnie and Great to TLG?

IMHO I think that they were sent there just after the crash. Maybe he sent Bonnie and Greta to TLG just like he sent Ethan and Goodwin to make lists. Although that wouldn't really explain how Danielle's signal hadn't been picked up. So theory number two: He sent them just after the purpling if until then the signals were blocked by other means.

TheBookPolice said...

dennis - It was that danged Wikipedia. I wasn't able to confirm that anywhere else. So, as is often the case, Nintendo fans get left swinging in the breeze.

#5 among 18-49-year-olds, 7.7 million

1. American Idol (Wed) 15.1
2. American Idol (Tues) 12.7
3. Dancing With the Stars results 8.8

I think that before Ben sent Bonnie and Greta, TLG hatch was only blocking Danielle's signal, but let their own signals go through, just as Juliet described.

After the Purpling, Ben decided to protect the island by blocking ALL signals, including their own.

Juliet, and the rest of the Others knew that Ben was blocking Danielle's signal for the last 16 years, but not that he had started blocking all signals.

The flooding story was a red herring, so his own people would not think that HE had cut off all communication.

picsel said...

you yanks are off of your heads with your TV. over here tbh we dont have the same sort of TV style you guys seem to have where its a battle of the titans. the only MEGA things on that takes up all viewing is Big Brother and X Factor (our equivalent to American Idol) and the soaps (soaps are huge over here) but all the soaps are arranged around one another so everybody can see every one (even across networks) and the set dates of everything makes it easy, Big brother on every night, but the big nights are saturday and friday

xfactor on a saturday

Lost on a sunday

Prison Break and Heroes monday (they conflict which is a pain)

So ratings arent that important over here really not like a broadcast thing anyway.. but my point is WHY would you choose american idol over lost or heroes? it makes no sense brilliant shows arent being watched because people think they have a shot at being famous !?!

TheBookPolice said...

picsel: but my point is WHY would you choose american idol over lost or heroes? it makes no sense brilliant shows arent being watched because people think they have a shot at being famous !?!

Didn't you just say that "Big Brother" and "X Factor" are the two big shows where you are? How did you manage to turn that statement into a "you yanks" condescension-fest?

You're knocking American TV viewers without actually understanding what you're knocking.

picsel said...

i meant like, the only ones that everybody will watch like the only sort of really commercialised TV we get i dont know how to explain it.

everybody still watches LOST and Prison break, i know what i mean lol

Passafist said...

Aww Man!

I was hoping that the Lost DVD would include some things related to the lost experience. The Sri Lanka Video, maybe a littl Doc about Rachel? Why ignore it? Even the 24 DVD's put those obnoxiously bad WEbisodes on their DVD's.

TheBookPolice said...

picsel - For the week ending 5/20/07, the top five terrestrial programs were

1) CSI
2) CSI: New York
3) House
4) CSI: Miami
5) NCIS

Prison Break was 17. Sky viewership is a fraction of the terrestrial viewership. I don't know how you can say that "everyone" is watching LOST and Prison Break, when those shows barely crack the top 20 in BARB ratings numbers.

2costa said...

i took it a totally differnt way, i felt that Mikhail was more loyal to the off the island arm of the others(mittleos) than Ben. After all Mikhail fixed it(grenade) so the signals are unjammed and probably cant be jammed again with out flooding the looking glass. That is the opposite of what ben wanted. I think he shot gretta and bonnie so they felt betrayed by ben and would give charlie the password, because it was clear they would sooner die than give it to mikhail.

2costa said...

obviously gretta and bonniw were bens most loyal people, he didnt give mikhail or richard the code or info about the looking glass cause he knows they are more concerned with harnessing the island for the outside forces. He always must have known mikhail would stab him in the back if he needed to and thats why he never even let it be known that the looking glass was in play til he got busted in his lie

picsel said...

terrestrial means nothing anymore really because 80/90% of people have a multichannel package. So whilstthose are the most popular terrestrial programs. LOST is on SkyOne which isn't a terrestrial channel although granted a large proportion of LOST's viewers in the UK can no longer view it as Sky have pulled the package from the main contender Virgin.

picsel said...

those ratings also dont account for people who record it on Sky+ (like me) or view it on Sky Anytime or for that matter the tonnes of people who download it

picsel said...

and ive never heard of NCIS lol

picsel said...

"A price tag of £975,000 an episode for Lost looks like it is money well spent for Sky One judging by the 1.1 million viewers (multichannel share 8.7%) that watched the double bill finale of the third series on Sunday (27 May 2007).

The last two episodes of the popular US drama, about the survivors of a plane crash who are marooned on a mysterious island, held a largely stable audience for almost two hours from 10pm.

At the time the drama series was on air Sky One held the position of third most popular channel in multichannel homes. It was beaten only by BBC1, which averaged 1.2 million (9.2%), and Channel 4 which averaged 1.4 million (10.5%).

In fact Sky One had more multichannel viewers at that time than ITV1 which managed 1 million (8.1%). "

Erich said...

I think the Others we saw in the finale were a group on the brink of falling apart. Like one of the Angels said (don't remember if it was Bonnie or Greta), the minute they start questioning orders, the whole thing collapses.

The problems start at the top, with Ben's shaken faith in Jacob and the feeling his power is slipping away. Then you have the ambush on the beach, with Tom questioning Ben's orders. That must have made Ben/Jacob seem a lot less omnipotent than they had previously. Finally, you get Mikhail and TLG girls. They're all well-trained soldiers, willing to give their lives to fight for whatever it is the Others have been fighting for/to protect.

Whatever happens, we're going to see a very weakened band of Others come next season. The perfect situation for Locke to assume control, if he wants it, because I definitely got the feeling Richard wants Locke in charge.

memphish said...

According to Popular Mechanics, David wins the radio tower debate.

4. Would Rousseau's radio transmission really have blocked the sat phone's signal?
Once Charlie turned off the Looking Glass hatch's signal-jamming devices, the Losties still had one more obstacle to overcome before they could make the call that would get them rescued: Rousseau's distress message, broadcasting for 16 years from the island's radio tower. But that, says Pelton, is impossible. "Sat signals are only blocked by jamming devices or solid objects that block the line of sight to the satellite," he says. "Radio signals would have no effect."

Morning all:

Apropos to this rating conversation (great that Lost did so well!), my writer friend Ken has posted a very funny piece about Why Network Ratings Are Down This Year.

bigdog said...

i find all the ratings thing a little strange. first i have never met anyone that has the ratings box. makes me wonder where they all are. second shows like the nine(which i wanted to know what happened) jericho and studio 60 are pulled in there first season. a show like king of queens gets moved around multiple times during its series finale.

with the dvr getting popular people are not tied to there tv between 8-11 everynight..and thats a good thing if you ask me. i tivo just about everything so my wife and i can spend time with our son before he goes to bed.(without tv)

also i read somewhere that they are trying to come up with a way to not allow dvr customers to fast forward threw commercials. I see where their priorities are.

Stepping down from soapbox.

PS I hope ben and juliet live until the end. they have played this game to well to die at the hands of the castaways.

picsel said...

maybe it was just filler for dramatic effectr...or it might be a special radio tower that has a jammer too, to block all other signals

BUT. if rousseau's blocked the losties signals.....why wouldnt it block the Others' signals?

maven said...

Erich: I think your take on what's happening with the Others is right on! Ben has been so consumed about protecting the island from whomever or whatever and he has manipulated his people are so long, that they are starting to get suspicious and are doubting their "leader". By telling some people one thing and others different things, you tend to undermine trust and loyalty.

picsel said...

bigdog said...

also i read somewhere that they are trying to come up with a way to not allow dvr customers to fast forward threw commercials. I see where their priorities are.

To do that they would need to bring out a new package with new hardware to update the programming. Then they would need to convince us customers that not being able to fast forward through adverts is a good thing to get us to buy it... I don't think sky or tivo (but i dunno anythig about Tivo) have the capability to update their programming online without some bloke having to come round to your house to do it...

maven said...

They also said in the Popular Mechanics article that a grenade underwater is implausible.
"Grenades would have a much diminished effect in water compared to air," he says. The two products of a grenade detonation, shrapnel and blast, could both break a window. However, according to Pelton, most underwater windows are made of thick plexiglass that tends to be the strongest part of a sealed vessel."

4.7% of the United States population watched the LOST finale. 1.7% of the population of the United Kingdom watched it. Using the actual ratings numbers, or even just the concept of the ratings system, to criticize a national viewing populace is useless and annoying.

I honestly don't care about ratings, but using them as a "you yanks" indictment is a little stupid. I will go into automatic defense mode every time I hear someone start out a post with "you americans," "you yanks," or something like that.

You don't understand it? Fine. But ask a question. Don't initiate the discussion by badmouthing a population en masse.

The first rule about being in the Nielsen club is don't talk about being in the Nielsen club!

I actually went to a friends house, and they had their Nielsen sitting out on their TV. I guess they have two ways for measuring ratings. Some people get a "set meter" box, my friend had a form that she filled out - a "diary".

I asked her to watch Day Break :)

picsel said... I don't think sky or tivo (but i dunno anythig about Tivo) have the capability to update their programming online without some bloke having to come round to your house to do it...

I don't know about Sky, but Tivo regularly sends software update to their machines to add new features. The Tivos have to "call-in" to get the latest TV guide data, so they get thier updates at the same time.

:

When the doorbell rang one evening about two years ago, we had no idea that we were about to be recruited into one of America's most secret societies, as hush-hush as the CIA or the federal witness-protection program. Yes, ours is a Nielsen household.
...
With so little hush money involved, why don't we just blab to everyone that we're TV trendsetters? We once made the mistake of telling an otherwise mature and sophisticated couple we know that we're a Nielsen household. Their immediate reaction was: "You have to watch 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' so it won't get canceled." We haven't told anyone since.

Dang, I was also hoping ((because the info was released earlier this year someplace!!!)) that the S3 DVD would have some TLE coverage! 2Costa,

This was actually just discussed recently in the THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS - SEASON 3, EPISODE 22 (POST 2) thread. Here are some of the comments I found:

acewebguy said... I was really busy last summer (renovating a house) and know close to nothing about "The Lost Experience". I have read a little about it, but need to know what to do with it? Is it part of the story officially? Was It just for fun? Are there some parts that we need to understand?

Administrator said... acewebguy, TLE wasn't something you "watched". It was literally something that we all "experienced" and participated in together. We actually had quite a bit of interaction with TPTB throughout the experience. You should really spend some time clicking through thelostexperienceclues.com. You can still experience a lot of things by following along there.

There are archived versions of the Hanso site where you can go and see everything we saw in the way we saw it. Plus you can see all the videos from Rachel Blake including the big one that has the origional DI initiation video in it. That is likely to be the most relevent part of the show and I expect it will be a bonus on the season 3 DVD so everyone else can catch up with that info if they don't have internet access.

That is the video in question. I don't have a link to the archived THF website but shouldn't be hard to find. It's either linked on TLEC or Lostpedia (or both).

I've never been part of a Neilsen household, but growing up we were in Armitron (sp?) a couple of times. They were an alternative to Neilsen back in the olden days. You had to fill out a diary for a week. And for all that trouble I think they gave you a shiny silver dollar. And I'm sure it was highly accurate since the kids in the household filled it out. I'm surprised they didn't bring The Brady Bunch back since at one time we could watch it, and did, 4 times a day.

People gripe about the Neilsens and how they don't reflect the true viewing audience numbers, but the reality is that only the straight-up who watched LOST on Wednesday from 10-11 pm numbers would be at all meaningful to advertisers. Everyone else is skipping the commercials and it's hard to product place on an Island.

It makes me wonder if Motorola made a deal for the KRZR phone. Gee I want the phone a crazy drunk non-shaving former doctor has. That would be cool. :)

Oh, and Dennis, I laughed about how you tried to get your friend to watch Daybreak.

Dennis said...

You can download YouTube videos, but they are stored in FLV format (Flash), so you would have to reconvert them in order to do anything with them.

capcom said...

LoCos, don't you think that the fact that there have been many requests since last year, for details of TLE by peeps who didn't get to participate, is a good reason for TPTB to include it in the S3DVD? Too bad we can't email TPTB en masse to change their minds about including it. :-(

memphish said...

I'd say you could email them Capcom. Heck since they aren't coming out until almost Xmas, I'd say they aren't set in stone here in May. The question is what's the best way to be heard?

Dennis said...

Even if they just came out with a seperate Lost Experience DVD, people would buy it.

memphish said... Oh, and Dennis, I laughed about how you tried to get your friend to watch Daybreak.

That was the week before it got canceled too. Not only that, I shamelessly promoted it here, and and work :)

The good news was that they showed the whole series online. The bad news is, now that you can view shows online, they are a little trigger happy in pulling shows off the air.

memphish said...

In an attempt to bring the subject back to LOST, I know some of you have weighed in on this, but:

Naomi: Who is she working for?
1. Penny and Penny just can't work out the details in her quick conversation with Charlie? (Does anyone have a transcript link? Lost Hatch hasn't finished this part yet.)
2. Penny's father?
3. The people who staged the crash of Flight 815? And who might this be?
4. Some faction of the Others or Other Others?
5. LoCo "favorite" TWM?
And as a follow-up to this question, how does Ben know or why does Ben assume that Naomi represents "the bad guys?" It was Mikhail and Bernard that told Ben about her.

memphish said...

Why don't the Others care about Aaron anymore?

memphish said...

You know I'll just keep posting until someone interrupts. :)

Did Ben have a piano in his house like Jack did? He would have to be the musician that programmed the jamming code if he, Bonnie and Greta were the only ones who know the code right? Other than Jack and Charlie have we seen any other musicians? Locke made a whistle.

bigdog said...

Hi memphish,

I think naomi is with the people who stagged the flight crash who are also apart of a syndicate of sun's father and pennys father.

locke made a whistle - dont know why but that made me laugh.

bigdog said...

Good question about Aaron. i hope next season he's not 20 like on the 4400.

bigdog said...

when do you think jack and the crew on the hill will catch upwith desmond and learn that its not penny boat.

does that mean that desmonds vision was wrong all along. it wasnt penny in the parachute and it wasnt penny on the boat. maybe hes been in room 23

Erich said...

Memphish: I suppose now that we know (or think we know) Naomi's people aren't on the up-n-up, she may have been lying about the fake crash.

I'll follow that statement, though, by saying I don't think it's true.

I think Naomi was led to believe 815 crashed, and pretty much everything she said was "true" as much as she believed it. She may just have been a worker bee for whoever may or may not be up to no good on the boat.

It does raise interesting questions about what would have happened if Des had let Charlie die when he thought he'd see Penny. If (as unlikely as it sounds) it had been Penny in that tree, not Naomi, would the boat have been Penny's, not someone else's (probably Widmore)?

How could the rescue timeline/outcome have changed if Des had let Charlie die?

One of my biggest questions coming out of the finale is: why does it seem Des's flashes are running counter to the will of the island? That is, by doing what Des had been shown, Charlie made the rescue possible, which is what the island didn't want.

So where does Des's power come from, if it doesn't come from the island?

Do we have one faction (Mrs. Hawkins, monk dude and DHARMA) who want to save the world by changing things on the island (the "core values"), and another, the island, that's trying to protect itself, fate of humanity be darned?

If DHARMA was doing important work in the Swan, and Des got his powers during the explosion, transferred by some DHARMA-related thing (NOT the island), then it would make sense that the outcome his flashes are working towards are not what the island wants.

THEREFORE (I'm on a roll here) it's the island/fate/whatever that's been trying to kill Charlie, to prevent him from allowing the rescue, while Des has been unwittingly changing fate (just like DHARMA was doing with the numbers).

Anyone care to add?

scoutpost said...

Hey all! Just popping in- I've been so out of touch the past week. Summer's here and the kids are stir crazy!

Memphish- that is a good question about Aaron. I always figured he was going to be key to the mystery of the island, but he was certainly put on the back burner in Season 3.
Bigdog- the beginning of season 4 should be interesting since the Losties are all spread out- some on the mountain, some on the beach, and then Desmond. Sure makes for a lot of speculation.

Bye for now- gearing up for the Book Club!

memphish said...

Erich, I agree that Naomi's story about 815 is accurate because A Coop believed it too.

Good points about Mrs. Hawking and her Desmond-leading minions apparently not protecting the Island. Maybe turning the failsafe key even has set the Island/Jacob off-kilter so that it can no longer determine what is good and bad.

I want an explanation for Kelvin and who put him there and for Ben's lie about pushing the button to Locke. And what really happened when they turned the key? Was the failsafe key set up by Mrs. Hawking and her minions to alert Widmore/Hanso/Paik to the Island's location at the proper time?

Has anyone found a wormhole I can use to get to Feb. 2008?

memphish said...

I also thought of a way I'd like to see Season 4 start and that is with Penny. I'd like to start in Penny's office and see what she was using to try to contact the Island, why she was on that frequency, what she makes of her conversation with Charlie. Then cut to Desmond on Island trying to warn Jack about "Not Penny's Boat." As soon as he gets back to the beach he can use Hurley's walkie to reach Jack.

Erich said...

Memphish: I like your idea about the failsafe being a warning system, making the island visible in a worst-case scenario.

I think a lot of what we have yet to learn will be about why DHARMA chose the island for its work. There must be something really special about the island if doing research/experiments on it could change humanity's future. I'm guessing it was chosen for reasons other than because they wanted someplace hidden to do work that could have been done basically anywhere...

Erich said...

Oh, and I lent my wormhole to a friend...sorry.

Dennis said...

memphish said... Naomi: Who is she working for?

Penny's father. He would have had access to the picture of D&P. If he knows that Penny is looking for Desmond, he might be trying to find Desmond first, took keep hime away from his daughter. (More daddy issues!)

memphish said...And as a follow-up to this question, how does Ben know or why does Ben assume that Naomi represents "the bad guys?" It was Mikhail and Bernard that told Ben about her.

I think Ben assumes that anyone activly trying to find the island, is a bad guy. He doesn't know that they were looking for Desmond. They might not even care about the island. But like the Losties, they'll start caring if they get attacked by the Others.

Erich said... It does raise interesting questions about what would have happened if Des had let Charlie die when he thought he'd see Penny. If (as unlikely as it sounds) it had been Penny in that tree, not Naomi, would the boat have been Penny's, not someone else's (probably Widmore)?

The problem is that Desmond didn't see Penny in his flashes - he saw the picture of Penny that Naomi was carrying. He just assumed the the parachutist would be Penny. So he was misinterpreting his own flashes.

Erich said...

Dennis: I agree with you about Des's flashes and the photo. I was just playing out a line of thought.

I am, though, verrrry interested to know why Des's flashes seemed to work counter to the island's wishes, suggesting his future-powers didn't come from the island.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Des trying to outsmart fate and save Charlie is so like DHARMA trying to change the numbers and alter the "fate" of humanity.

I think Des's powers came from the hatch implosion (kind of obvious), but that what he harnessed was NOT a power of the island, but rather something DHARMA was working on. Probably the thing that caused the "incident" meltdown.

Maybe the Hostiles were attacking DHARMA because of the incident, in the sense that what they were doing in the Swan (changing the Valenzetti equation, perhaps?) was against the will of "the island."

I'll throw this out there: What if Naomi's "boss" is the mysterious J...nthan in the casket? What if this person was the "Captain" of the freighter...in charge of the rescue/purge? Jack would be upset about the death because he would be a person who knew how to get to the island.

Captain Michael?

Michael would fit that description too. He boated his way off the island, so he might have been able to find his way back.

I think the thing about the article is that the person committed suicide. This gets Jack thinking about everything that happens, and why not take the "easy" way out, too?

There were a lot of suicide themes in the episode: the Nirvana song, Charlie, Ben's solo trip to confront Jack...

I think it is something like this yes. There are way to many coincidences (Ring woman+Desmond+the monk and Nadia+Charlie+Locke) showing up to tie the Losties together. I think someone is messing with the past to try to change the future.

Sayid'sgirl said...

Not the paper. The publishing company. Sorry.

capcom said...

"It's a small world after all!" Heehee.

Erich said...

Sayid'sGirl: Thanks! I'm still trying to flesh the theory out...and to simplify it. Here's another thought:

The Island/Jacob/Others see the world, and those in it, in terms of black and white, good and evil. In their eyes, the only ones worth saving are the "good." In their eyes, the idea of trying to save an unworthy humanity from destruction is pointless, especially if those who want to save the world are perverting the Island's power to do so.

Then there are those who want to change the "core values" to save the world (possibly including time travel to reorganize the course of history). They think all life is worth saving, and want to use the Island's power to carry out their mission.

Several questions:

- have we ever heard an Other, or Island person talk about "saving the world"? or only DHARMA/Swan station folks?

- If Mrs. Hawkins is on the side working to change the course of history, why would she tell Desmond that you can't affect fate? Does she just not want him messing with their delicate plans? or does she truly believe it?

- How does this reconcile with Locke pushing the button (a DHARMA endeavor), and now working on behalf of the island?

If this is true, it follows the Judeo-Christian religious themes of the show. The Others, like the Pharisees, only believe a select few can (and should) be saved. DHARMA/The Changers, like Christ, feel that everyone deserves a chance for salvation, and so effect a plan to change things, offering redemption for all.

Am I way out on a limb? I wish there were more evidence to back this up.

capcom said...

Sheesh Erich, that's some good thinking there. It helps pare down the whole nebulous so-called-good vs. so-called-bad situation.

Some in the story definitely have a more skewed view of what's good, as opposed to the ones who are trying to be good by just trying to survive and hopefully help others survive at the same time.

Sayid'sgirl said...

Erich
I don't if you're out on a limb or not. But I like what you are saying. You're right I've never heard anyone but Dharma talk about saving the world. There are so many confusing contadictions on the show it's hard to flesh anything out.

Erich said...

I just think it's worth pointing out that Desmond's flashes ultimately worled AGAINST the Island, not FOR it, so his power must have come from somewhere other than the island (unless it was an accidental transferrence of power).

Sayid'sgirl said...

I agree with that Erich.

capcom said...

Yes, good point. :-) It seems now as if we have forces working at cross-purposes on the island!

I know Erich has gone beddy bye, but I do like his train of thought. It definitely makes sense the the Others live in their own little world (the island) and don't want any outsiders interfering with it. It's their own Shangra-La. Dharma, on the otherhand, might have using the island for the "save the world" philosophy. They probably kept bringing more and more people and more and more technology to the island for the greater good of all of humanity. They were looking at the bigger picture and the Others were looking at the smaller picture.

For the record (ange)... I've got cats too... but no log... ;-) I'm a clean FREAK and think I'm relatively within the bounds of "normal!" (No offense really taken... just getting a laugh out of the comparison!) Sorry... didn' mean to throw anyone off with my freakish worrisome delete!

Lisa said...

memphish said...

Erich I like what you're doing with the Others/Jacob/Island on one side and Dharma/Hawking on the other. I agree that Desmond's flashes do not work to protect the Island from outside forces. The last 2 flashes in particular were meant to bring people onto the Island and people potentially off of the Island. And on the other side "Walt" who seems to be of the Island tells Locke to stop it and Ben says that Jacob does too though when Ben communicated with Jacob about this I can't say.

I'm not so sure about the good and bad being black and white for the Others though. I think rather than their being categories of things that are good and bad that there is One Good. And the Others/the Island/Jacob will do whatever it takes, good, bad, indifferent in order to protect that One Good. That's why the Hostiles and Ben can gas 40 people (clearly bad) and why Klugh can order Mikhail to shoot her and why Bonnie and Greta and Mikhail believe so insistently.

Now here's where things get murky though and that is in the Others behavior with respect to the LOSTies. I can get that Locke and Walt would be on Jacob's list of those people who could wholeheartedly buy into this One Good and would defend it with their lives. What I don't get is why there would be a large group of Tailies who also fall into that category, why Cindy who wasn't taken for another month also falls into that category and why none of the 30 Fusie background people fall into that category. Even given the Fusies we know, Claire I think would be a prime target what with her astrology and psychic background, and yet they weren't planning to include her in their society if her flashback can be believed. I can't come up with a unifying theory that explains why Tailies could be integrated into the Others society, but not Fusies. Any ideas? Anyone?

I definately think them leaving the island is a bad idea... and now i don't want it to happen at all costs. I Think they basically put a pin in the future and now we are gonna see how they are gonna get to that point. The rest of the next three Seasons we will see where they are going, instead of where they are comming from. When Jack screams with passion "we have to go back, Kate!" He is in a very unhappy place and leaving the island was the worst thing and i hope they can all still change their future.

memphish said...

I think the flash forward demonstrated that at least for Jack leaving the Island was not the right choice, but I'm frustrated that Ben, Locke, Jacob, whoever did not give Jack the information necessary to make that choice properly. In Jack's position, I would have made the call too.

I think Kate looking the way she does also leaves us with the question, was it bad to leave? She doesn't look miserable, she's not in jail, and someone cares about her whereabouts.

If they don't leave, at a minimum Sun is going to die soon and the Island's civilization will end when they all die because of the procreation problem. So why is not leaving right?

2Costa, but it seems like there would have to be "weak", lets call them malleable, people in the Fusie section. I can't ever reconcile this point because statistically one would assume that more than 9 Fusies would meet the criteria of the 9 Tailies because there were twice as many Fusie survivors as Tailie survivors on crash day.

No. His legs stopped working because he gave up and lost his faith. Seeing Walt snappped him out of it.

There are lots of people buried all over the island, so I don't think that the pit is special. I'm much more curious about the gray stuff outside of Jacob's cabin.

memphish said... Dennis, I thought about trying to watch Traveler, but the phone rang, then hubby came home and I figured it will go the way of the Dodo or Daybreak, so I did not invest in it.

Well, it's no Day Break, but what is :)

I heard that it did well in the ratings, so we'll see. Not much else going on over the summer...

Yeah I watched it. It's not too bad. Gives me something to watch this summer. Un less of course they cancel it.

There's a Funny Finle Recap here. The language is a little blue in places and I don't speak text, so I'm sure I missed some jokes, but hey, it's about LOST.

maven said...

Dennis: Yeah, I watched it out of desperation because nothing else is on right now. It was okay, but it seems like the young leads are targeted to a younger (than me) audience. But, there's some mystery in it...will most likely continue watching.

I see what you mean, Memphish, about that recap...it was funny in some places, I didn't get some of the text code, and cringed a little with the R rating! Best line..."An Iraqi, a dentist and a Korean walk into a bar..."

Over at DarkUFO, Vossek69's Overall Theory of Lost is up. Reading it now...

"Why don't the Others care about Aaron anymore?"

Just saw your question about Aaron... been busy.
If anyone said this I am sorry for repeating this.
I don't think they don't want Aaron. So far the only one to come for or take Aaron was Danielle and her crazy mind. The Others have been waiting. What good is a special baby. You can not communicte with it and it can not communicate with you. It, even if it is special is still just a baby. They need children, because children have less of a moral sense to them. Would Jack ever help them, NO he would be sceptical from the start, but Walt on the Other hand (pun intended) would be easier to manipulate into taking their lil tests and play their games. Ben never expected them to find a way off the island so he was just waiting for the baby to age. They took Alex when she was a week old and then got stuck with a baby they didn't need. Wait and see, then snatch I think this was Bens plan all along.

"Has anyone found a wormhole I can use to get to Feb. 2008?"

I believe there is a Shappa-eye in Antartica if you wish to go there, but I belive the Stagate facility is closer to you any way. so you might just want to go there instead... if you can get passed the military. Remember John Criton is on the SG-1 team now and he knows all about wormhole technology... lol

I just saw Spiderman 3 and my new Smokey theory is that it's an Island version of the Sandman. I'm not a comic book person, so can anyone tell me is there anyway to destroy the Sandman?

Ange said...
Also, according to Wiki
Sandman, "...is vulnerable to large amounts of water and ice."

He is vulnarable to Water and Ice, Water will dilute him and make it harder to reform, but only as long as he stays flooded and in motion. In still water he can reform. As well with ice he will remain frozen until the ice melts. The only way to kill the Sandman would be to super heat him into glass, he could not reform from being made solid. They did this once, but he was raised by Dr. Strange because they actually needed his help. He then escaped and was out for Spidey once again.

"I am, though, verrrry interested to know why Des's flashes seemed to work counter to the island's wishes, suggesting his future-powers didn't come from the island."

They work to counter the islands wishes because Desmond is the course correction to what the island/Jacob is trying to accomplish.

On the subject of the Tailies being Taken.

The two jids and a Male were taken the first night.
Two weeks later they took Nine more.
And then they took Cindy during the trek, SO I count a total of thirteen tallies taken into the Others group. Who knows though if they found anyone else along their travels.

ROFL nothing wrong with cats in my book, except that they make my eyes swell freakishly large. Just saying that they were overly interested in the Neilson box/log. I wonder if they put catnip in there.

PS I am a clean nut too ;)

dennis said...I'm much more curious about the gray stuff outside of Jacob's cabin.

I have been worrying over this as well. It is for certain that they showed us that for a reason. Now in addition to thinking about the theories of what it could/could not be, we might try to see if the finale has any insight into that.

Could Be:
*gun powder
*volcanic ash
*crushed island rock (possible magnetic)<---my personal favorite.
*some kind of voodoo circle (black salt)

What else...?

Also, Ded, I am only intimately familiar with Vertigo's Sandman...Marvel was totally a wiki for me.

That recap is very funny, but I too had to look up some of the slang (on Urban Dictionary)

FACT: There is no chin behind Sayid's beard. There is only another fist.

Weren't they going to kill Claire and keep her bay-beee?

That's what concerns me. Desmond's flash was only seeing Claire and Aaron getting on a helicopter. Charlie kind of jump to the rescue idea. Desmond then said he'd have to die for his flash to come true. Desmond has misinterpreted his flashes before.

Ironic that he mentioned Star Trek toward the end, because while i was reading it I kept thinking that alternate universes/timelines, at least the way he presented it, seems too "Star Trek-y" for me ...although I really like the thought of the series ending back where it started, with a plane crash ... that would be a mindf**k and a perfect ending.

Id like to be able to come up with an overall theory myself but there are so many of you out there with so much more Lost knowledge than me, and I just want to say thanks for sharing your insights and expertise. Its always a enlightening and entertaining reading what you guys think. The amazing thing is that the show somehow manages to stay ahead of everyone, despite the considerable efforts of a good many highly intelligent people.

I just finally listened to this episode. I really liked the discussions on this one. I can totally see the argument for it being Michael in the casket.

Well...it's so sad to not have lost every week, but that does mean I can procrastinate with listening to the Podcast. But it was great. I shouldn't have waited.
