GREATEST HITS - SEASON 3, EPISODE 21

Could this be Charlie's kiss good-bye? We'll have to wait until tonight's episode to see if Desmond's premonitions come true. The spoilers are out there for both this episode and the finale and I've been working my hardest to avoid the temptation to read them. by the way it took me several minutes to figure out that TLG meand the looking glass.

still find jack rather arrogant and annoying.

and finally we see a pleasant father and child flashback.

dont trust noami or jules

dennis...thanks for the slo-mo promo. You don't realize how much you miss because it goes so fast.

So, they have Bernard, Sayid, and Jin bound and gagged... I guess not everyone was blown to hell. That sucks for them.

And I agree, Alex is becoming a problem for Ben. Wonder what he'll do to her?

Regarding Juliet and TLG, I'm really hoping she is telling the truth about not knowing much about it. Maybe Ben doesn't tell her everything -- he's having doubts about her because I think she'll do anything to get off the island even it means turning on Ben. But, then again, maybe she's lying. A lying liar, as memphish put it.

memphish said...

Don't go by me though ib4uc. I'm the president of the She-woman Juliet Hater Club.

ib4uc said...

memphish... I just thought the term "lying liar" was funny. How do I become a member of the club?

memphish said...

ib4uc, If we were on the Fuselage, we'd have a big list, but simply declaring yourself a member works here.

So Ben still has a mole in the camp, right? How else does he know to intercept the Jack-led LOSTies? And why don't they just tackle the bug-eyed bas**^^? And where is Paolo's walkie talkie? I think Danielle may be the mole.

bigdog said...

maybe dnaielle made a deal for alex?

i still think it is jules. once and other always an other.

how did ben get the gun from locke?

bigdog said...

oh my goodness i need spell check..

acewebguy said...

Why doesn't Jack take the losties back to the caves? Maybe this is an incorrect assumption on my part, but the caves would have limited entrances, meaning it would be much easier to defend. Also, they should be familar with the layout and they know there is fresh water there, so they could live there for a while if need be.

Why go to an unfamilar location, that could already be crawling with Others and would be impossible to defend once they are tracked there?

memphish said...

I agree acewebguy that Jack's plan leaves a lot to be desired. Why not hide in The Staff? The Pearl? Othersville?

And what's with Jack as the new Locke "let's blow 'em up" attitude? I hope we get a new Explosion Tour Poster with this Christmas Eve addition.

I'm more and more suspicious that this Jack is not the Jack we saw getting ready to get on the submarine. Why would football playing Jack want to blow up Tom? Because Tom throws like a girl? That's pretty harsh. And what about the kids that are "safe" according to Jack?

bigdog said...

cause tom throws like a girl - still funny.

was it jacks plan to go up there? i thought it was sayid plan to go up there and turn off the transmission?

Good morning, everyone!

I see there was some confusion about what I was talking about last night in regards to the radio signals. Let me see if I can clarify:

Juliet says that Ben is jamming every signal except theirs. I wondered in Danielle's signal was getting through, and if so, why it was allowed to broadcast for so long. My theory was that Ben had not been in TLG for so long, he had no idea what Rousseau had changed the signal to.

However, now that I think about it, maybe the reason no one ever came to find Danielle is because Ben's been blocking that signal for 16 years. If it was jammed, would they be able to hear it on the island?

Melissa_Lossa said...

On another thought - after this episode, I'm a little suspicious of Naomi. That whole story that she told Charlie about the news making a big deal about the dead rock star, and the greatest hits album, all that seemed a little off to me. I can't quite explain it - it just seemed too.... contrived maybe?

memphish said...

If TLG is blocking transmissions, how did Ben contact Richard in Acadia Park to show the footage of Rachel and Julian?

acewebguy said...

Yes, I think Sayid did say that the radio transmission would have to be turned off before they could send their signal.

But why not just send one or two people to do it? They would get there faster than the entire group. And they are in a hurry so time is of the essence.

Meanwhile, take the rest of the group to a safe location (Caves, Pearl, Staff).

Plus, doesn't the group eventually have to travel back to the beach to be rescued. Why have the entire group travel all the way to the radio tower and then have them turn around and go back?

Jack may now officially be our leader, but he needs to bounce his ideas off a few people first.

I nominate Rose!

ib4uc said...

Gotta love Rose. She calls 'em like she sees 'em.

maven said...

Morning all! I liked the episode, but it seemed like a filler to me...leading up to next week (guess that's what they intended).

Re Charlie's does he swim or doesn't he? Well, he proved it last night. In his flashback all he did was jump into the pool and his father held him up. We really didn't see him take off by himself in the pool (could have been implied though). Charlie could have been just playing up his swimming skills in the past to make himself more important to the group. He couldn't have been such a great swimmer if Desmond "saw" Charlie drown trying to save Claire.

I also don't get why Jack is taking everyone to the transmission tower. Unless it's a high point and they can see everything.

bigdog said...

that is why jack bothers me. i still have a problem with his "i saw it in your eyes jules you want to leave too" i think he can be easily manipulated by woman. especially one that is suppose to look like his ex.

Rose seems so centered. i second the nomination of rose for island vice pres.

Melissa_Lossa said...

memphish - Juliet says that Ben is jamming every signal except theirs. Last night, I had it in my head that she meant the radio tower, but now I think it's more likely that she meant the Flame.

Sayid believed that it was Danielle's signal that was interfering with the satellite phone, but Juliet said that it was more likely the jamming signal from the Looking Glass.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I don't think Charlie was that great of a swimmer. He told Jack and Sayid that he could hold his breath for four minutes, but when Des asked it that was true, Charlie just asked if it really mattered. I think the fact that he was almost out of breath when he came up inside the hatch showed that he was lying about his abilities.

And just because one of his "greatest hits" was when his dad taught him to swim doesn't mean he was any good at it.

memphish said...

I vote for Rose too! Putting her Bernard in camo. So smart.

Someone on another board pointed out to me that Juliet said they are blocking all transmissions except their own. (Juliet still refers to herself as One of Them. I'm just saying. Lying Liar.) Is it like you block all channels except the ultra-super-secret channel and just hope no one else tries to broadcast on it? That sat. phone was scanning for an open channel wasn't it? If my portable phone in my house can find the clearest channel, why can't the sat phone find the channel the Others are broadcasting on?

My thought is that for the Others to communicate they send their transmission to TLG and they send it on. But that would have to mean TLG is operational. So is Juliet lying again? I vote yes.

Re: charlie swimming i think he thinks that if desmond saw him die after he hits the switch than he wouldnt die on the swim down. but the fact that desmond was ready to take his place really makes me think that charlie was not going to die like that.

memphish said...

As for the flashes, didn't Desmond coming on the boat with Charlie change everything in the first place? I know it's not clear, but still. Does anyone else think the flashes will go away with the 2nd head whack?

Melissa_Lossa said...

I also wondered how a radio tower would be blocking the signal from a satellite phone. I'm by no means a techical whiz, but aren't radio waves and satellite signals two completely different things?

TheOtherLisa said...

Oh, I laughed, I cried (real tears) for Charlie, and screamed when Jack yelled "Danielle!" I haven't been that TV emotional since Roethlisberger saved the Bus from going out on a fumble in the Colts game 2 years ago.....Ahhhhh....

Off to read your comments...with expectant glee!

bigdog said...

memphish - i agree with the whack on the head. it is classic tv, one whack gives you special powers the next whack takes it away. it also seemed to me that charlie could have just said no thanks brotha i am ready to be a hero instead of hitting him with a oar.

It's all electromagnetic radiation. Just a question of frequency/wavelength.

Which... wait. Makes Desmond's flash DEAD WRONG. Unless Desmond was lying, his flash wasn't even close.

Not really, all Des said was "you hit a switch with a flashing yellow light above it... and then you drown" He never says drowning happens immediately or that the room is already flooded at the time.

Perhaps hitting that button floods the place, which is what causes the jamming signal to stop working. Last I checked, most electronics stop working when submerged in sea water for prolonged periods of time.

I'm a little perplexed. Why is the underwater station called "The Looking Glass"? I get the literary references...Alice, White Rabbit, etc. What am I missing?

memphish said...

I had that question too Maven. My guess is that you pass through The Looking Glass on your way to the Island. Maybe that's the rough part. It does have the sub dock. Then once you go through TLG you arrive at this fantasical place, the Island. That's why those that crash there have a more difficult time, they haven't arrived properly or with the proper mindset.

Ange said...

I cried like a total nerd last night for Charlie too lisa.

When was the "incident" (not the purge)? Because I am totally on board with the people who think that the women have been in TLG since the incident. Maybe no one even knows they are there.

I thought it was interesting that Nadia called Charlie a hero. I wonder if any other losties have done anything "hero" worthy? Clearly she was in that alley for a reason, so I wonder if all of the crash survivors were monitored in their lives to see if they were heroes, or good, or had abilities, etc.

maven said...I'm a little perplexed. Why is the underwater station called "The Looking Glass"?

Maybe they are "looking" at the DHARMA underwater experiments (sharks)?

Also, I love how on tv it only takes one glancing blow to the head to knock someone out cold every time.

memphish said...

Someone on Jay and Jack said they heard the name Desmond in the background when young Charlie was at the pool Did anyone here hear it?

maven said...

I kinda thought it was named "Looking Glass" because when you take a boat out to it and look down through the water it's like a "looking glass". Dumb, huh?

2costa said...

this episode sort of made me remeber that tle video that they said was a fake that had an asian lady talking about the underwater hatch. Obviously desmonds visions are planted in his head and not real, why else would he see charlie pulling the switch in the flooded hatch, yet it wasnt flooded. To me it shows Ben has not lost control. Ben told juliette that it was flooded because that is where the high ranking others go. That must have been where they held coop that why the submarine was out when he called for the man fron tallahassee. I think last week everybody was saying ben was losing control, but this week it seems he thwarted richard. I think richard set up ben to be the leader, but ben used that power to ensure that he stayed leader. I was thinking that Ben was probably the hostiles way of learning the dharma equipment and such. Since we have seen that ben does what he has to to stay alive he may have kept some dharma secrets to himself. just like last week richard and locke were seemingly manipulated ben by calling him out on keeping his word to locke, well this week ben turned the tables. He brushed over what happened to locke and why they were attacking early by saying jacob told him to in front of everybody. Last week ben did that whole thing about asking tom if he took the tape so that richard wouldnt know that ben was onto him.

2costa said...

to complet my though it is interesting that desmonds vision coresponded to bens faulty info on the hatch was flooded... very interesting indeed

Other people called a hero:
Jack by Sawyer several times;
Jack's dad tells him not to be the hero;
Jack's dad says they used heroic efforts on the pregnant patient that died;
Sarah calls Jack her hero;
Kate's bankrobbing boyfriend referred sarcastically to Kate/Maggie as a hero;
Locke calls Boone a hero referring to his going into the drug plane;
Michael tells Sawyer that coming on the raft either makes him a hero or a guy with a death wish to which Sawyer replies "I ain't no hero.";
Sayid's CO says Sayid's father was a great hero;
Charlie asks Desmond if he thinks turning a key makes him a hero to which Desmond replied "I'm no hero;"
Charlie says Jack is going to do something heroic when he goes back to the Hatch after Locke and Kate.

There's one other Sayid FB reference as well, but I can't place it on the line alone.

Another thought: Why was Carl taking the catamaran to go and warn the Losties? The way he took off it seemed like he was going to another island, not skirting the coastline. I thought everyone was on the same island now.

2costa said...

That robbery seemed so fake with nadia to me it was like all the stuff that happened to desmond in the past to grrom him to be a hero and push the button and then turn the failsafe. I think the people like the ring lady and others are fighting throughout time to affect the timelinem, which might explain why desmond had the contradictort visions in the arrow in charlie's neck epi. If charlie was meant to die on that one then he wouldnt be available to go to the looking glass.

Ange said...

Maven, Alex told him to take the catamaran because it would be faster and give him a couple of hour jump on Ben and his group.

Thoughts (sorry for the big post)

1. Desmond is trapped by his premonitions. He gets pieces of the future and believes that's how it has to be. Charlie swimming around a flooded station looking for a button. Nevermind the logistics of it, that's how Des sees it and that's how he believes it has to be. Like someone mentioned about saving Naomi – we don't really know that if Charlie had died, that would have been Penny on the island instead. And we don't really know if Des saw that in his vision. With premonition, sometimes it's not so much as what you see as what you feel.

2. This could be me being picky about how the producers did the premonitions this time, but everytime Des has his premonitions, they usually show some of it to us (except for the first time we learned about Des's ability) and the premonition happens that day, exactly how Des saw it UNLESS he does something to change it. So the difference here is, Charlie didn't die like in his premonition on that day, which would be fine if Des did something to change the course. So far as we can tell, Des didn't change the course. The questions are did Des change the course? Did Des not interpret the premonition correctly? Did someone else change the course? Or is his premonition spot-on, only it happens not that day but a day or more in the future, which would be different than his other premonitions?

3. Lies. Either Juliette is really playing the Losties (wheels within wheels) or Ben lied to her about TLG being flooded. I agree with the idea that Ben either lies or doesn't tell the Others everything because it gives him control over them. Ben lies to some about TLG. What made Ben change his mind about snatching the Losties? He says that Jacob told him to do it now, but notice how Alpert does not quite believe him. Did Jacob say that, or is Ben lying again?

4. Which brings up Jacob and the shack. Ben said that one goes to Jacob when Jacob summons them. We also know the Others hold Jacob in reverence (healing cancer, their reaction to Ben telling them he was taking Locke to Jacob). We also know, or believe that once someone returns from Jacob things happen either by Jacob informing them about what will happen or by doing Jacob's actions. For example, Jacob "told" Ben to go to the Losties camp early. Why? Does Jacob know that the Losties are ready for the Others? We still don't know about Juliette and Ben, they could still be planning all this. But let's suppose not. That would mean that Jacob has premonitions too. Going further, even though we "saw" Jacob, maybe there is a chance that he still doesn't really exist, Ben uses him as a way to control the others. Perhaps the shack has the powers. Ben goes there to get his premonitions. Or Ben has the premonitions and for some reason the shack enhances those premonitions. We only know that Ben visited Jacob with Locke, not if he went back there. But from the conversation between Jacob and Ben (though one-sided) we heard nothing about going early to get the Losties, right? So how did Jacob "tell" Ben this? Either Jacob is real and he can send thoughts (this is how he talks) or Ben had a premonition in the shack.

5. I agree about Naomi's story to Charlie being off. So they "died" in a plane crash and there was great mourning for Charlie and a greatest hits album. They've been gone 90 days, that seems like too short of a time to get together a greatest hits album, release it and promote it. Either she's not telling the truth or there is the time issue going on. Another thing to support Naomi lying, she quickly hands over the Sat phone. What better way to hide the truth then to give up major information. Also, Ben and Patchy were surprised that someone landed on the island, but Ben doesn't know it is Naomi. He could know about her but is keeping it from the rest of the Others. Hence why patchy didn't know her.

2costa said...

Karl is also a pawn in this whole thing. I think they are settingt he stage for ben to be the lesser of two evils again. Ben wants to stop going to the outside world and stop recruiting, but richard and mikhail dont want to be cut off. So it is in there best interest to have charlie flick the switch cause right now whoever is funding the others from the outside cant get to the island either. I think naomi being from manchester leeds me to beleive she is working for charles widmore and not penny. Desmonds vision of claire getting saved may have been aaron getting taken by the evil forces that the phycic talked about long ago

maven said...

Thanks, Ange. It just liked he was paddling "out to sea" and not up the coast.

bigdog said...

crazy thought, if they wanted to disconnect TLG why didnt they just cut the cable from the island?

2costa said...

that explains why mikhail showed up out of nowhere to save naomi cause she works for his bosses. The way that they just have people like juliette show up on the sub shows that the looking glass is the last stop before the island, where charli swam up is the submarine dock, but mark my words the hatches are all connected and one wouldnt have to swim out there. The fact that the hatch wasnt flooded or that charlie didnt drown shows me that at least some of desmonds visions are planted and fake. Probably has to do with what they did to him after he turned the key

RE: THE LADIES IN TLG.... (all we see is women, eh)
My Questions are (in addition to all the other good theories already posted)…are they being held by ben for experimentation or are they hiding (from fertility experiments), or, here's another line of thinking..... are they the smart Dharmas as Diggity Suggested, or are they Natives that dissented after Ben came into Power?

I fully believe Ben is telling a lie. I think he is on his own agenda and is using the idea of Jacob to get everyone to follow him.

Also Alpert started to ask Ben if "John had seen Jacob," but Ben cut him off and said, "John had an accident." And that was that. Alpert seems quite submissive to Ben and no one seems to be doubting his authority at all.

Ben can not talk to jacob, the idea that jacob controls the smoke the island or the healing is just not true. Locke doent worchip jacob he worships the island and i have a feeling that ben does too, he uses jacob or the notion of him to control the others and keep richard in line. Ben planted the idea that jacob controls the healing whne he told locke "I hope he helps you now" last week. Thats what ben does he plants little lies or misconceptions in seemingly straight foward statements. Richard knows full well that ben doesnt talk to jacob but he cant call him out on it when they are in front of all the rest of the others, cause they would be pretty pissed if they found out their leader(jacob) wasnt as powerful as they were led to beleive. Thats why they think locke is a rock star cause they have been led to beleive that jacob controls the healing and the island and hence jacob must favor locke. I suspect thats what the ring of dust is all about, keeping jacob right in that rocking chair. that way ben can appear to be interacting with jacob to anyone that can actually see jacob

My take on the episode. Good episode to set up the Finale. Not as good as last 2 weeks or so, but a good setup.

I think Jack and Juliet are still working with the Others. It doesn’t make sense that Jack would tell Kate the Kids are “better off” with the Others and then turn around and want to blow them all to hell. Also Juliet always has easy answers to hard questions with a “poor little dumb person asking a question” condescending attitude that drives me nuts. So put me on the Juliet Haters list. I think Ja and Ju have led all of the losties to Ben, possibly thinking they are “better off” with the others just like the Kids are. If this is true then Jack is still on the right side, it just goes back to him making all decisions on his own for the best of everyone without their knowledge. I also think if this is the case, Ben is playing both of them and they don’t realize it.

Nice Catch E27 on the different clothes Charlie was wearing. That changes all my internal strife over that scene. If Naomi is there as a direct result of Desmond reliving those few weeks and altering the past (which I believe is what happened), then Desmond should have been in that scene if it was the same time and place. I wonder if they did that as a challenge to see if we would nit-pick and find the differences, which 30,000 fans on the internet watching each Lost episode frame by frame and taking notes would probably do. You have to love us Dwights of the world.

If you follow my reasoning that richard and mikhail want charlie to flip the switch, then maybe someone like ben ghas been trying to kill charlie so he never has the chance to flick the switch, that might tie to the arrow in the neck didnt jive with his vision of charlie helping with the parachute

Happy Hangover Day LoCos! Interesting discussions and research last night and today by everyone!

The last two eps have convinced me that Ben is a megalomaniacal-sociopath. He wants total control and will do anything to achieve and maintain it, and like a true sociopath, he does not think that any of the evil things that he does are indeed evil or wrong. Blech. His little boy story really pulled at the heart strings, but every adult is responsible for recovering from their own childhood trauma, and he chooses not to. Or, he's just too sick in the head by now to. Double-blech.

As for the LG station, it could still flood if someting triggers it (manually or by a Locke visit explosion), Charlie may still need to find the switch, and he could still die. Desomond's vision doesn't have to include Charlie's entire adventure, there may be a lot of actions that happen before Charlie dies in whatever way. Did Desmond specifically say that he would drown? I can't rememmber, I've only watched it once so far. He could possibly die in another way at the LG if Des didn't say by drowning.

You know, I've been thinking this since the episode ended.
It is possible that the "jamming" would not stop right away, since the LG station could have batteries which would take a while to run down. But at some point they need a power source.....

Unless, of course, they have their own pair of hamsters down there under the water....

engineer27 said...

capcom said... As for the LG station, it could still flood if someting triggers it (manually or by a Locke visit explosion)

LOL! Maybe the tour will go on after all!

Hamsters.... sigh and smile!

Capcom said...

LOL Eng27, I bet that they do have their own hamsters in the LG, it would make sense for good contingency planning in emergencies for all the stations to have a backup and separate energy source at the very least.

I don't know Lisa, it still gives me the creeps that Jack said that. How could he think they are safe with people that he holds in contempt? Safe from sand fleas on the beach, I'll accept. But safer with nutty professors, mad scientists, and vengence driven screwballs than with the mostly-kind-hearted survivors on the beach? I still don't get that.

Scoutpost said...

Morning everyone! Good comments so far! Memphish- you have the best resources! Thanks for that Lost Hatch website. Looks pretty cool. I'm running out of space in my toolbar though.

memphish said...I agree acewebguy that Jack's plan leaves a lot to be desired.

These are some really good questions memphish. Jack's actions don't seem consistent.
I would love to join the campaign for Rose to be the new island chief!

re: Charlie's streetcorner fb- thanks Engineer27 for the clarification. At least that's one thing I don't have to try to wrap my brain around!

And yeah- cutting the cable on the beach would've been a whole lot easier!

Man I just wish we could figure out this Jacob- flash forward/flash back- looking glass thing! ha! Guess we won't know til 2010. (The secret is in the rabbits and hampsters!)

As for Rose, I am actually really disappointed in her since Bernard came to the beach. She said that she loved him so much before the Tailies came over, and she was always so calm and kind hearted. But since they've been back together she's done nothing but belittle him like a mean old harpie! I really don't enjoy watching them together at all.

Joseph Finchum said...

Wow a lot of good thought today.

Acewebguy said...
Plus, doesn't the group eventually have to travel back to the beach to be rescued. Why have the entire group travel all the way to the radio tower and then have them turn around and go back?

I was wondering this myself. Why would you make the heavier people make the trek? It just seems stupid.

Melissalossa,
I agree on the signal transmission stuff. I was also wondering how a signal jamming station would work under water. Water vibrates and there for would greatly diminish any transmission leaving it. The signal from the Island would be stronger than the one underwater... right?
Also I agree about the timeline of Naomi's story being way to fast however, when Stevie Ray Vaughan died they announced it the next day and the day after that there was a tribute album/greatest hits type thing out. so it can happen. It all depends on who owns the rights, the musician or the record company.

Maven,
It wasn't really a filler episode, it was more of a leading episode. If it were a filler episode, nothing would have happened at all. *see N**** and P**** episode.
About the tower being a high point, in the first season Danielle said it was the highest point of the island and near the Black Rock
Karl had to go far enopugh out into the water to not be dragged around by the wave or effected by the undertow... I drove a boat...lol
About tieing in LOST and A.I..... keep it that way... lol

Ange,
Yeah I know what your saying about the head whack thing. Have you ever seen Conspiracy theory?
Mel hits the Agent in the head with his gun. Agent slumps over.
MEL: "Are you pretending?"
AGENT: No response
MEL: "Are you?"
AGENT: "Yeah."
Mel hits him again. This is more like real life.

Hurley for President
Rose for V.P.
Sayid Secratary of Defense
Bernard Secratary of Education (Artz is dead so...)

And last but not least about the tear jerker that was last nights episode. This is the third thing to make me cry in my entire life...
The others are the movies Homeward Bound... with the animals... and Godzilla 1985 when they dropped him in the volcano and he screamed... awwww so sad.

capcom said...BTW, is there any talk out there as to why the heck Alex was gutting a bunny outside on a bench?

She was going to bring it to Karl- I assume for food? But it was kind of funny to see the white rabbit being carved up like that. Do you think Ben noticed or cared? Are there lots of Dharma experiment white bunnies running around there? Or was that #8?!

engineer27 said...

capcom said...
BTW, is there any talk out there as to why the heck Alex was gutting a bunny outside on a bench?

We're supposed to believe she was preparing it for Karl as a meal (he says, "I thought you were bringing me rabbit?").

As far as the conditions go, I guess when you need to eat the hygeine goes by the wayside a bit. If you cook it enough, you'll kill any bacterial infection. Plus, it tastes more like chicken then....

Ange said...

capcom: I think she was gutting the bunny to bring to Karl. He said, "I thought you were bringing rabbit." But yikes, those white rabbits sure are around an awful lot...#8, Ben's pet, Karl's supper, and now on TLG hatch.

Black Swan said...

Hey, everybody...

So many great discussions here today!

I was wondering why they didn't just cut the cable on the beach, too.... (I guess that wouldn't make for a good storyline)

I also thought the way Alex was cutting up the bunny seemed like a weird way to get it ready to cook... Carl thought she was going to bring it to him. Actually, it set up a great scene with Ben giving Alex back her gun (with her hands all bloody) basically letting her know that Locke didn't end up having the gun, he did, and that Alex may have some blood on her hands for her efforts... I think Alex will now go and help Locke

I saw on Animal Planet that one breeding pair of bunnies can expand to a family of 85,000 in only a year.

Hence the expression, "breed like rabbits". One might assume that they are even more fertile on the Island.
If so, it is amazing they aren't stepping on rabbits every time they put their feet down.

Joseph Finchum said...

I wondered about the cable thing but then I dismissed it. I think that maybe the plans say something about the cable being for connecting to the flame and not really for power. so they have to go down there in order to turn it off. Cutting the cable just cuts them off from the island.

My thought with the radio tower and TLG is that the radio tower is sending out Danielle's distress signal on an infinite loop. However, TLG is jamming the airwaves and not allowing anything out. Now when TLG is disabled, Danielle's message will get through OVER Sayid and the satellite phone because it is stronger. So they have to turn that off too, then try and use the phone.

My question is, can you can pick and choose what signals/frequencies to jam. I would say no, you have to jam everything; so the only way for the others to send messages is for them to tell TLG to let them. Therefore, the two women in TLG are part of Ben's crew.

My timetable may be wrong, but the purge happened 16-20 years ago (before Danielle got there - 16 years ago & Ben was in his twenties then and forties now). So how could the two woman have stayed in TLG for that long period of time? Plus, the blond one looked young, so if my time estimates are right and she is DI, then she has been in TLG since she was a young kid. I just can't see that.

I'm just going to drop my thoughts and run, I'm going away for a few days but I'll catch up with everyone on Monday)

Bigdog: Exactly my thought! Why not just take the axe and cut the cable?

I think TLG's chicks could be Dharman not purged, or they are Others that got there by sub. The Looking Glass may be where the portal (time travel, other dimension, whatever) is located. You are transported there, and then have to get to the mainland by submarine. (not anymore!)

-So glad Charlie is not dead.
-I'd be disappointed if Desmond's headwhack stops the flashes.
-If they went to the caves or Staff Station all the Others would have to do is throw in a canister of gas. It's not a good place to hide.
--Ben didn't hear Jacob say anything about the change of plans. I agree it was Ben getting everyone distracted from the "where's Locke?" question. Ben lies again!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. I'll be living like the Losties over the weekend, no outside communication for 3 days. {shudder}
But it will be worth it, I'll be able to truly relax and focus. Pray for me!

I counted three black cars in total:

acewebguy said...
My question is, can you can pick and choose what signals/frequencies to jam. I would say no, you have to jam everything;

acewebguy, it's really just the opposite. Since radio waves have a specific frequency (i.e. AM is different from FM is different from TV is different from cell phone, etc) you really do need to choose what to jam, since you don't have an infinite amount of power.
With a given amount of power, you can jam a narrow range of frequencies really hard, or a wide band of frequencies really low. The total amount of power you have available determines how wide a band you can jam and at what level.

I'll try to find a wiki article to provide more enlightenment.

bigdog said...

i wonder does anyone else on the island not age like alpert.

like the blood on alex's hand symbol. if she didnt give locke the gun it would not have been that easy for a recovering ben to kill locke with his bare hands.

amused - enjoy those technology free moments.

acewebguy said...

Thanks engineer. But then doesn't that mean that TLG would need to jam the wide band of frequencies really low, otherwise
(a)how would they know what frequencies to jam to stop the radio tower
(b)what are the odds that the satellite phone's frequency was one that was already jammed?
(c)couldn't Sayid change the satellite frequency to one that is not blocked?

engineer27 said...

Here is the wiki entry on Jamming.

Also, see the entry on signal-to-noise-ratio. In the equation, jamming makes the denominator bigger, thus lowering the signal to noise ratio and making the desired signal harder to detect. If the signal power is very large, you need a very large jamming power to drop the ratio below what the receiver needs to properly receive the desired signal.

engineer27 said...

acewebguy:
If they had really sophisticated equipment, I suppose it could listen in on what transmissions were coming off of the Island and automatically jam just those frequencies.
That would save the limited jamming power for just those freqs that contained traffic.

Of course, all of this assumes that Kitsis and Horowitz (the writers) know radio theory or bothered to consult with someone who did. If not, I suppose anything is possible.

Eng27, without reading the article (which I will inna minute) can you jam frequencies in a scanning manner? Like, scan through the whole range of UHF, or VHF, etc.? I know, I little knowledge is a dangerous thing. :o)

If danielles signal is being jammed two then it makes some serious questions about the dude that hurley got the lotto numbers from. That dude claimed that he heard danielles transmission in the middle of the ocean. That leads me to think that guy was also a dharma/others/mittlos plant there to direct hurleys path. Hurley is going to very important to this whole thing and i dont mean it all in his head. which might tie into the fact that hurley was an oceanic ticket agent in lockes vision from the beginning of the season...

engineer27 said...

capcom:
Jamming is all about how much Energy you can dump on the same frequency that a receiver is trying to listen in on. Power (in transmitter terms) is how much energy you can spit out in a given time. High power for a short time or low power for a longer time can deliver the same amount of energy, and have pretty much the same effect on the receiver.
It all depends on how much power you have at your disposal.
The most efficient use, as I said earlier, would be to listen in to see what freqs were in use, and just jam those. But the tech to do that automatically is very sophisticated (like, the US army is still trying to perfect it).

memphish said... So Ben still has a mole in the camp, right? How else does he know to intercept the Jack-led LOSTies?

I don't think there is any mole. I think the scenes are out of order. The 10 guys invade they beach, some get blown up. Bernard, Jin, and Sayid get captured. They radio Ben and tell him that the rest have left. They probably tracked them heading to the radio tower, and Ben headed them off. Or maybe the LG girls beat it out of Charlie.

-----------------------------------

maven said... It's amazing that his guitar didn't warp in all that rain! LOL

From Lostpedia:

Charlie's guitar is an Ovation, which is made from synthetic materials. The sides and back of the body are Lycrachord (a substance having similar properties to plastic) and the top is HPL (high pressure laminate), which is basically wood chips pressed together under extreme pressure. The neck and fret board are also HPL, so water and humidity changes wouldn't affect the guitar itself. It's unknown how the metal strings still in such great shape after being on a deserted island for 2 and a half months.

That's the kind of thing we'll look back on when it's all said and done and realize that TPTB were really paying attention to details- whether it's a red herring or not- to know that we pay so close attention and that they answer to that.

Capcom said...

I get that feeling too Scoutpost, that when all this is done, and we can look back over the whole story arc, I think that we will really be in awe of TPTBs efforts. As long as the ABC weenies don't cut it short like the TLE, that is.

On the schematics of TLG that Sayid was looking at it shows an “anchor to land” about the same place as our cable [see Memphish’s link to Hatch Maps].

Is the cable running to TLG actually a support cable as opposed to an electrical cable? We have always assumed it was a power cable. Was this the reason an axe to the cable would have been ineffective?

Although if it is keeping TLG from floating away, maybe an axe to the cable would give the same result.

Dennis said...

I think even Eko with an axe would have a hard time cutting a steel cable that big. Maybe some dynamite...

memphish said... New theory -- The Looking Glass is not a Dharma station but is a "Hatch" Ben created post-purge. It sends out the Valenzetti numbers and blocks transmissions from the Island so DI keeps sending signals.

If TLG was Ben's creation, why would he put a Dharma logo on it, and why would he have kept TLG plans in the binders with all the other stations.

Also, how many other hatches does Sayid already have blue prints for, and is not telling anyone yet?

memphish said...

The Swan film, our first taste of DI said there were six orientation films. But now we have at least 7 stations -- Swan, Arrow, Staff, Pearl, Hydra, Flame and Looking Glass, not to mention the Barracks. We still don't really know what The Arrow did, but Horace had an Arrow patch.

Dennis said If TLG was Ben's creation, why would he put a Dharma logo on it, and why would he have kept TLG plans in the binders with all the other stations.

It's the same as faking The Door or iPod Hatch back in Yurt Village in terms of using the DI logo, misdirection. Why the schematics is more puzzling if it's not truly DI. I'll plead the lateness of the hour I posted it.

Dennis,

I said the same thing about Sayid holding out.

Memphish,

Good call on the Fake door idea.
My thought was that this is where they were doing the Math/Valenzetti research, because Horace's suit thingy said Mathmatitian. Or this could also have been for meteorology. The Arrow that is.

memphish said...The Swan film, our first taste of DI said there were six orientation films. But now we have at least 7 stations -- Swan, Arrow, Staff, Pearl, Hydra, Flame and Looking Glass, not to mention the Barracks.

Yeah this is what I'm wondering. Why was there no orientation film for TLG? It opens the door for more stations. Could TLG have been built by DI but after the other stations? Does this meaning anything at all or are we just thinking too much into it?

engineer27 said...dennis: Interesting thing about the TLG you refer to. The chart has a date of June 2003 on it.

If that date is correct (and not a prop error), then TLG is not that old and Juliet would have to be doing an awful lot of lying because it would've been built after she arrived to the island.

memphish said...

So E27 do you think that Ben implemented some plan in 2003 where they updated all their schematics, took inventory, made manuals? :D

Scoutpost said...

Maybe TLG didn't have an orientation film because maybe no research was being done there. Maybe it is the entrance "portal" to the island, and therefore people just man it. But it still leaves the door open for there to be other stations for Sayid to be holding out on.

Scoutpost said...

LOL memphish- yeah in 2003 Ben just got a bee in his bonnet that he wanted to get really organized... or maybe Jacob told him to.

Joseph Finchum said...

Scoutpost did you see how many files were in that binder? He is holding out on a lot.

Gotta go... see ya's L8R

I'm just saying it's something I noticed, that's all.

You know, I had no idea the comment about the bunnies was so funny. I honestly didn't mean for all of you to ruin your keyboards by spraying your drink all over them. I'm really sorry ;')

Here's another one... the Chess motif recurs:

Chess Game

memphish said...

Good find E27. As I mentioned way up in this thread Alice Through the Looking Glass is a chess game as well.

engineer27 said...

Yes, I think the producers are subtly but repeatedly hammering that theme. Several episodes have pictured chess games in progress. Now we have the Looking Glass reference that you mentioned.

Plus, Ben's mastery of the situations could be compared to that of a chess master -- particularly how many moves ahead he plans.

And it looks like the Dark side is winning...

"Charlie seems to be one person without daddy issues we see from his flashback."

I seem to recall him having daddy issues in other flashbacks. And the vision where he saw his dad cutting up meat telling him he'd never be a musician.

"I'm a little perplexed. Why is the underwater station called "The Looking Glass"?"

Has anyone gone through all the hatches we know and tried to draw some connections?

"I really don't enjoy watching [Bernard and Rose] together at all."

If you remember the first time they met, in their only flashback, they've been arguing/bickering like that since they first laid eyes on each other. I like them. I think they love each other- they just have an interesting way of showing it.

"Darkaardvark , can you get us a higher res screen shot? "

It definitely says "I was here moments ago" and I'm not sure if I could get a better screencap then that.

Capcom said...

I know Dark, you're right. I just don't like bickering, it gets on my nerves. I also have a sensitive spot for when people belittle other people. Yech.

Here's something that hasn't been discussed here yet...

Did anyone notice that Jack, Desmond, and Richard Alpert all had on bright blue shirts? Browse through the screen caps on lost-media and you'll notice that the blue really pops. At first it made me think of Clark Kent's outfits on Smallville...Then I looked up "blue" in wikipedia and here's what I found that I thought might be significant...

"Blue, like white, may represent authority, as opposed to revolutionary red or anarchist black. Blue plays a symbolic role in a number of world religions. Because blue is the color of the sky and sea, it has often symbolized divinity. It can also represent equilibrium, since its hue suggests a shade midway between white and black, day and night. To the ancient Egyptians, blue was the color of truth. In the Hindu faith, persons of a transcendental, or divine nature are displayed as being blue in color. Law enforcement, and uniformed police, often wear blue uniforms and have become associated with the color blue. Blue is often a color used to symbolize honesty and trustworthiness. Connected to this, blue traditionally is associated with the Christian virtue faith. Hence, it may also mean naivité, being "blue-eyed". In Scandinavia this expression is used for people who are easily tricked or cheated."

codysmom the same way "they" put a chip in claire to make her seem sick, the same way the smoke can appear as real people. if youll remember desmonds first attempst to save charlie didnt entail charlie doing anything, des just saved the day, but with the naomi flash foward desmond had to recreate all of the circumstances of his camping trip with hurley kin and charlie, and that was because his vision had penny in it to motivate him to make it happen. His vision last night was the same way where charlie would have never volunteered to swim down there had desmonds not had that vision and to sweeten the pot there is the payoff mootivation for charlie this time in the idea that claire and aaron will be saved, but what if claire and aaron are safe now and the helicopter is the bad people that would exploit aaron. Seems too convenient that desmonds vision included the intrinsic motivation(claire/aaron) for charlie.

SPOILER alert sort of: I have it on good authority that there will be some more suspect flashes foward in the finale, but who knows maybe the looking glass will be flooded and then charlie will flip the switch and drown or maybe desmond lied, but it seems strange that Ben's false intel to julliette about the looking glass was part of desmonds "vision"

2costa said...

part of my theory about the flashes foward not being "real" have not yet been revealed. The idea of Jacob reminds me of Dave. If dave was a straight hallucination he was a darn vivid one with the slipper being real and all.

mY idea about deuling forces trying to control the timeline sort of played out with hurley getting on 815 to begin with fate seemed to be trying to make him miss the flight but he was determined. If rousseaus signal has been jammed all these years then that tweaker that gave hurley the numbers was a liar and so was the one armed lady he met in australia, but maybe that was all a ruse to make sure hurley was on flight 815

2costa said...

as was the fake intel sawyer got that the real sawyer was in australia, i wouldnt doubt that the t2000 was a dhothers plant...

Capcom said...

That's interesting Admin, I hadn't noticed! Maybe that is TPTBs way of subconsciously letting us know who's on the same side. :-) Blue is also for calm, peacefulness, tranquility, etc. That is an interesting Scandinavian expression as well, thanks, I'm studying Scandinavia (mostly Finland).

Ange said...

Desmond usually wears that blue shirt, he even has it on in my avatar. If you have HD, it is SOMETHING to see. I like the idea though that he is "trustworthy".

I have comment 400. I like a nice even number.

Capcom said...

Heheh, Jack also had sleeves in his shirt for a change!!! :o)

And I liked the fact that Rose knew Bernard wasn't dressed properly for camouflage and needed to get into a darker shirt!
