congrats on first, melissa

from last post.... 8 months off, 4 months on (Feb-May) for the last 3 seasons of Lost... I agree it's partly to make 3 more DVD sets ($) and also maybe works better for the actors to be able to do other things between seasons. As long as they Finish it and not leave us hanging!

TLC book club will have nationwide repercussions:)

Going to listen to the podcast and will be busy today. be back later

Thanks, codysmom. :)

I have to say, I'm looking forward to the Lost book club! I've never been in a book club, and this will be the perfect excuse to read a lot of the books that have been mentioned in the show.

I'm happy to volunteer to step up and take the lead, if no one else wants to.

I've been thinking about it since last night, and as far as this finalized season schedule goes, I'm just afraid that some casual fans might not want to wait that long (with 3x16 instead of 2x24) and subsequently give up, leaving ABC with no choice but to cancel it.

And I can't wait for the book club!

LGLM: I was thinking the same thing about the show getting cancelled. Although from a contract standpoint, would just carry on viewers or not?

I was watching The Sopranos last night and I found that there has been such a big gap from last season to this (over a year) that I really don't care anymore about the plot, but just kinda want to see how it ends. So I personally hope Lost doesn't end up like that or like X-Files.

Dennis said...

My notes from the podcast:

• David and Steve

It looks like they do read the comments :)

• The future of LOST

According to the Variety article mentioned in the previous post, LOST has been renewed for 3 more seasons, of 16 episodes each.

I don't really like this set up. Come on! Three seasons is just dragging it out. Why not 48 more seasons of one episode each? Every episode would be a season finale! I'd much rather see two seasons of 24 episodes, but nobody asked me.

• Locke saying goodbye

Ben tells Locke that they are leaving in the morning, and that he might want to say goodbye. Locke probably said goodbye the next morning, on the way out., so he had all night to learn about Kate's past. Since Locke agreed to leave with them, Ben may have filled him in on Kate's past that evening, after Locke tried to make a case for her.

• Apple iPhone

The interface is similar, but it is not the same.

• Bali. Bodies. Robots.

Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.

• Star Wars

If Cooper is Darth Vader, and Locke is Luke Skywalker, does that make Sawyer the Emperor?

DiggityDirge said...

Good morning fellow Losties. I wasn't sure if everyone saw the good/bad news that hit the web today. Check out the USA today article.

http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2007-05-06-lost_N.htm

Looks like Lost will have three more seasons, so we will have a lot to look forward to, but the execs at ABC are cutting it back to 16 epi's a season. 6 less epi's than the first three. That means less action each year as they stretch the story to Season 6. Check it out.

Ange, you make a good point about the Sopranos. I've been a fan for years, but with the long hiatuses (hiati?) I've forgotten half of the history of the conflicts. I'm watching these last episodes for the same reason as you...to see how it ends. It's definitely lost its "must see" status.

Lost is much more complicated than the Sopranos, with all the mysteries. How we're supposed to retain the history through three 9 month hiati is beyond me. That's going to take more than a one hour recap in January. Just give us the two full year seasons with a few reruns in the middle and be done with it.

I don't think they'll cancel it, unless there is a HUGE dropoff, as it is still an incredibly popular show.

And Dennis, I think Sawyer is Princess Leia.

maven said...

Morning all...listening to podcast now.

Wow, 3 more seasons with only 16 eps? I think that's just dragging this out! Agreed, let's do this right and get this story told!
Ange: Ditto on the Sopranos...just what to see who gets whacked and what happens to these degenerates (what Christopher did last night was disgusting!).

Melissa_Lossa said...

I was just reading a description of the annual pre-finale recap episode, and this one sound slike it might actually be worth watching. They're going to lay out which mysteries have been solved (and what the answers were) and then talk about what mysteries are still out there. It'll be nice to actually have a difinitive answer on some things - "yes, this is solved, here is the answer, there is nothing more to it then that."

FYSB said...

melissa lossa, where did you see that description? sounds interesting.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I also agree that three seasons is draging it out, although I'm glad that the writers do have a set end point. I think that's what killed the X-Files - they just kept going on and on, with no real wrap point in sight.

Melissa_Lossa said...

fysb - it's on spoilerfix. I know, I know - I looked today for the last time, and I'm going to try to stay spoiler free from here on out!

Here's the description, for those of you who don't want to risk it. Dennis, let me know if this is "out of bounds" and I'll take it down.

Lost: The Answers
ABC once again invites new and avid “Lost” viewers to take another look at one of the most talked about and critically acclaimed shows. “Lost: The Answers” will explore the series in a way that will bring new viewers up to date -- but which current viewers will also find illuminating – in anticipation of the Season Finale episode. The special will take an in-depth look at the mysteries of both the island and its inhabitants and recap the secrets that have been revealed, as well as those that remain unanswered. Hosted by “Lost” executive producers Damon Lindelof (also a co-creator of the show) and Carlton Cuse, the special will revisit mysteries that have been solved, including why a polar bear is on an island in the South Pacific, who the real father of Sun’s baby is, what caused the crash of Oceanic flight 815, who was in the hatch, how Locke ended up in a wheelchair, what Kate did to become one of America’s most wanted, and the identity of the real Sawyer -- who conned James Ford’s parents – leading to their deaths. In addition, mysteries that remain unsolved will also be explored.

There is one mystery listed in the description that I do not believe has been addressed yet, so I have taken that one out.

Only 16 Episodes!!! That's a good thing!!WE won't have to sit through four filler episodes or pointless clip shows. I say bring on 16 jam packed episodes a year instead of 16 good episodes and six filler episodes!!

maven said...

Thanks, Melissa_lossa, for posting that press release re "The Answer". It's always good to get confirmations on plot points. I don't really know how a new viewer can ever catch-up for the finale...there's just too many layers to this show for a casual or new viewer.

Putting the new schedule in terms of 2010 being the end...that sounds so far away. Wait until hubby hears I'm going to be obsessed for 3 more years! LOL

Melissa_Lossa said...

I would like to point out that every recap that I have seen the description for includes this phrase: "explore the series in a way that will bring new viewers up to date - but which current viewers will also find illuminating." That always cracks me up - can you imagine never having seen the show, watching one of these, and then feeling ready to jump right in?

When I first read the story about the end date, I thought, "2010?! That is so far away!" I thought it had to be a joke. Then I realized that it's already 2007. LOL. I'm still used to dates like 2010 being in the distant, flying car future.

DiggityDirge said...

Melissa_Lossa said... 2010 being in the distant, flying car future.

That made me laugh out loud. Used to think 2010 was going to be the flying car future, no I am just hoping for an alternative to oil and gasoline. At the rate we're going, gas will be $10 a gallon by then.

Capcom said...

Wow, interesting news about the 3 seasons.....so the 16 eps per season is not for sure yet? For 16 eps, my first reaction is ::raspberries!::, and I agree with Fenris. Just get it over with. But, I keep remembering how in TPTB have said how difficult it is to make each episode in a timely manner (with all the effects, expensive props, etc.), so I feel compelled to cut them some slack. And the long periods in between for the alternate haitus work as someone mentioned, might keep the original actors happier about staying on for so long. Although, why actors whine about having to keep the same job for over 10 years is difficult to sympathize with, as the rest of us working dogs have to do that!

Blackrock, you should hang out during the book club! When I get on here there is usually hardly anyone blogging, so you just read up and leave you comments. I hope that you do hang out with us! Don't let the time difference stand in the way.

IMHO, the real problem with the X-Files, was that they killed off all the human enemies (The Consortium) in the railroad station fire, didn't explain what the aliens were going to do after that, or even which group of aliens won! And without the original mythology to work from anymore, the show just kind of drifted after that with everyone walking around wondering where Mulder was, and goofing around with the dumb super soldiers and shape changers. Oh well, we've got about 7 glorious seasons to enjoy watching in our old age. :o)

But it does make me wonder what would happen to Lost, if TPTB reliquish too many answers too soon. But at the rate they are going, I don't think that we would have to worry about that!

Capcom said...

Too funny Melissa and Diggity! Hey believe it or not, way back in the 60's some scifi movies were set in the 1980's and there was flying car type stuff. We're way behind science-wise where we could have been, sadly. We could have been like the movie 2001, IN 2001, if all went well. :-(

BTW, thanks everyone for sharing the Lost news today!

If there is anything good about the new structure for the rest of the seasons, it's uninterrupted action from Feb to May. But, it will be a long time to wait from May till Feb without the 6 epi's that ran in the fall.

Guess I will have to get more into Heroes, House and others to pass the time in the fall.

I'm looking forward to tonight's Heroes epi. I hate Sylar. He better not kill Hiro!

I don't think we need to worry about spoiling a clip show. Besides, we already know all the answers :)

Passafist said... Only 16 Episodes!!! That's a good thing!!WE won't have to sit through four filler episodes or pointless clip shows. I say bring on 16 jam packed episodes a year instead of 16 good episodes and six filler episodes!!

Instead of getting 6 filler episodes per season, over two seasons, they have just stretched it out to 4 filler episodes per season, over 3 seasons. Still 12 more filler episodes to come either way. ;)

Melissa_Lossa said...

The way I see it, we have some serious work to do if we're going to get to the Back to the Future idea of the future in only eight more years!

Anybody remember that commercial a couple of years ago with Avery Brooks talking about the future? "And where are the flying cars? I was promised flying cars!"

capcom - you're right about the X-Files, they did away with too much and then had no where to go. I'll admit, I didn't really watch the last couple of seasons. Which was huge, because I was OBSESSED with that show. My best friend and I are still arguing about whether or not it was really Krychek who shot Mulder's father! I have the whole series on DVD now, though, so I'm looking forward to finally watching all of them.

And I tend to agree with you about the new Lost schedule as well - if we can get 3 more quality seasons, I'm happy to wait.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Thanks, Dennis. :)

Hey LoCos
I think I'd rather have two regular length seasons than three short seasons. It would feel like we were just getting into the season and it would be over and then a nine month wait. I'm not looking forward to the wait after this season. I'm with Fenris ABC is just dragging it out, but I guess that's the best comprimise TPTB could make.

Capcom said...

Right Melissa, I kind of remember someone saying they were promised flying cars in a commercial, it made me laugh when I first saw that. :o) I also have some old kiddie books on space and one is titled, "You Are Going To Live On The Moon!". I really believed that when I was growing up and couldn't wait! Phooey.

I also was obsessed with the Files, and also didn't worry too much about getting to the TV in time for the later episodes. And I still have questions too, one being about what you said.

Erich said...

Figure I might weigh in on the 16 ep seasons controversy. This is the internet, after all, so I'm convinced everyone cares what I have to say:

I didn't like it at first. Definitely felt like ABC was just stretching it out to maximize profits...and I'm sure it will do that, but the Cuse quote from the Variety article makes a good point: with a show as dense in mythology as Lost, the more time spent crafting each episode, the better. 24 episodes in a season is doable, but very tight. To run the rest of the story in two seasons would mean either a breakneck production pace —requiring, perhaps, shooting and finishing episodes months and months before they air (piracy, anyone?)—or a reduction in the number of episodes.

I say give them time to tell the story right. It's the future of television, folks; and, ultimately, it's better. Just feel jealous for those lucky ducks who manage to avoid Lost until they can watch the entire series on DVD in 2011.

memphish said...

My further 2 cents on the scheduling. I'm not really that upset that it's 16 vs. 22 episodes. I wonder if the finales will still be 2 hours? Heading into the final four hours of this 17 hour stretch, I don't know if I could last another 6 hours, and I think there's no way LOST could air 4 hours in 2 nights like 24 did to start the season this year.

My bigger gripe is 3 more years, and as someone earlier said, I think that's mainly a perception problem in my own head. 2010! Where is my flying car indeed.

I'm looking forward to hearing Dedjezter on the podcast.

memphish said...

If it is Locke's presence that is "healing" Ben, pins and needles, can walk now, etc, then why didn't Bea Klugh's list for Michael include Locke?

Did Ben, Bea, whoever designed the list lack "island faith" in its healing power despite the fact that Locke now walked? Why hedge your bets with not good enough for Jacob's list Jack?

Or is Ben just full of it as usual, but then how do you explain Locke?

Just another thought on the announcement today: At least we know what's happening! In the TV business you can be cancelled on a dime. We found out that "Gilmore Girls" was over 2 weeks before the last episode! (Although it was rumored.) Even though there are no guarantees (would ABC really cut it short if the ratings tank to the extreme?), at least knowing when it will end is a big plus to me. And the producers now have the luxury of planning everything out the way they want.

Scoutpost said...

Afternoon everybody!
Interesting news re: the last 3 seasons. Not really my first choice of the way things should go, but I guess I can live with it. I do worry for the show for the reasons everybody has mentioned- I mean it will lose a lot of momentum with such a big break, even with us- the obsessed- much less the casual viewers. I don't know if the group of friends I hang out with will last that long on such a short season. They're already disgruntled with how it's gone so far. Oh well I won't give up or complain, but my excitement for the show may wane in the last couple of seasons.

Now back to plot discussion- I really hope that the Losties get their act together in these last couple of episodes. Looks like this week Sawyer will play Juliet's tape for the beachies. I hope they don't stand around arguing about Jack and Juliet the whole time- if the Others are coming to attack in 3 days, then they need to get a serious defense plan going. Now would be a good time for them to bug out to Otherville instead of staying trapped on the beach with the Ocean to their backs. I just don't want them to waste too much time on the loyalties of J&J. Get ready to fight people!

DiggityDirge said...

at last...the statistic I have always wondered about and have never seen published. Not like it is any surpise to us, but I'm glad to see it confirmed.

- it is the most recorded show on TV, gaining 18% more viewers through DVR viewing. It is also a popular draw for streaming replays on ABC.com, iTunes downloads and DVDs.

Scoutpost said...

memphish- that is a good point. If Locke were so "special" re: healing, they should have been trying to get Locke all along.

Maven said....Even though there are no guarantees (would ABC really cut it short if the ratings tank to the extreme?

I doubt it would be cancelled before completion. Cuse and Lindeloff just signed 8 figure deals to keep them through LOST's end. That's a lot of cash to pay for a cancelled show.

(Hi all, btw....sorry I haven't been active this season. I try to come and lurk some at least.)
I was livid at first about the 3 season thing. But Erich brings up a very worthwhile argument. I'd rather quality over speed. And as much as I complain....I'm a diehard fan. I'm not going anywhere.

maven said...

Diggitydirge: Granted Cuse and Lindeloff's deal is big bucks for ABC. And I think part of the deal was for future development. But it's still all about numbers (no, not those numbers)! Now, realistically, the show would really have to tank big time to warrant cancellations. And, I think there would be a big revolt if anything is left dangling for the fans. Most likely, it would never happen, especially of making a point to pinpoint an end date.

David and the Goog,
Another great job on the Pod cast. Thanks for the back up mix, I don’t know how to do that... yet.
Syndication... I agree with everything you guys said on this matter. This is a nation of instant gratification and this causes shows that are slightly different to go the way of the dodo, and that's sad.

A side note to that. The show Gilligans Island of which the cast members chose money up front instead of Royalties for the life of the show... Has never been off the air. That was a stupid decision.

You mention how few Others there seemed to be, you forgot to take into account that 23+ are crash sorvivors. So how many Others are there really?

The Column, I can’t believe I glanced over something that big. It didn’t even register and it was right there in front of my face the whole time... lol That was a good catch.
So it appears to be a doric style Column with a smooth face which if my research is good dates it to 3000 BCE to 500 BCE. Thats really old. While there does seem to be other rubble scattered about, that seems to be the only solid base so was this always a sacrificial pillar in the center of the island or something like that.
If any one else has any info on that style of column I would love to here it.

On Locke, you could say that Locke may have hd healing qualities and an inexplicable ability to sustain damage before coming to the Island... that is special. Maybe in time even off the island he may have been able to walk eventually.

Maybe the Cult of Jacob feels the there are times where murder and death are justified and John is just proving to the viewer that he is a true man and that mercy is the ultimate gesture.

For the record. I have no intention on taking Dark Angels place. I don’t think it’s even possible. I had some free time for once and gave it a shot. That’s all. If I get a chance I may try to do it again, but who knows. What Dark angel did is truely hard to do. I can’t even gather my thoughts fast enough in that short amount of time. Some of the things I said are completely different in my head now then they were four days ago. Theories evolve like a living creature in a tiny cage. Sometimes they are happy and well, sometimes they need to get out and find an entirely new cage to live in.

Dennis and Tallguy,
Cooper is the Emporor, Which is why Darth Sawyer kills him just like in Star Wars, although that would make Sawyer Lockes Father... and .... um.... What?
Any way Ben is a sith to be named later in the Bokks.... lol

The Flying Car

While I was employed at Acclaim, I tested a game called Mary Kate and Ashleys Licensed to Drive. In this game was a mini trivia game. One of the questions was Which type of car does not exist? The Answer was The Flying Car. I fought tooth and nail to have this changed or taken out. But sadly did not win. This was my proof of the question being false.
My Evidence

"Nothing really new in here, but this is kind of a wierd line from the summary:"Even heroes have secrets""

I think that's referring to the mystery surrounding whether Jack is with the Others, naive, or just pretending to be with the others.

As for the end date: I'm really glad there's an end date. The way it looks, Lost will NOT be canceled before the end, if by some chance of fate it is canceled, the rest of the episodes will almost certainly be on the web. But...can you seriously see them during season 6 and the run-up to the finale, canceling? The only real worry is that the 16-episode season kills it and there is 0 interest in season 5.

I'd rather see two more seasons with 24 episode runs. But if this gets us to the end and allows them to plot their course, so be it. Four more season finales before it's all over... can't be mad with that.

I guess what it boils down to is this: Don't devote your life to Lost. Get hyped up about it a month before, watch it for 4 months, discuss it for a while, and then take half the year off. Don't worry about it. You'll get excited about it again.

When I read that I pictured the whole beach crew going into A-Team montage mode, with Hurley donning a welding mask and building a tank out of discarded Dharma VW microbuses; and Locke chomping on a cigar, telling everyone how he loves it when a plan comes together...

It was doing terrible. It only got a 2.8 rating which tied for last place, and a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49.

I say was, because ABC has dropped its weekly encores of Lost. They are going to double up on "According to Jim" and "Notes from the Underbelly" instead.

I'll talk columns with ya Ded! Your research looks good.

One of my architecture books gives the only example that I can find so far, that is as plain in design as our island column. The Tuscan order, "...a classical order of Roman origin, [is] basically a simplified Roman Doric characterized by an unfluted column and a plain base and capital...having no decoration other than moldings." More excerpts say: "..the Doric order was the oldest and simplest of the classical orders...developed in Greece in the 7th century BC. The columns were massive and firmly planted." Sounds like our island column.

Trying to look back further in time however, my art history book does not list any type of column in between the megalithic Stonehenge trilithons and the early Doric, that are as plain as the column on the island. Even the Beni-Hasan tomb columns (dated 1985-1793 BC) are fluted.

That's all I've got so far.

Melissa_Lossa volunteered to lead the book club earlier in the thread. I move that we accept her fearless leadership.

I guess we want to wait until the end of the Season to decide for sure what we want to read first. Unless some other incredible literary nod occurs in the next 3 episodes, I'd say Watership Down would be a good one because it's easy to draw LOST paralells and we can argue which warrens are most like which groups we've encountered and which charcters are which bunnies. The downside of it is length, about 450 pages. The upside is there's a movie for the reading challenged.

I am offering any time I have to help with anything needed to get this thing running. I am off for the summer starting June 13th, and the boredom usually begins around June 18th (hehe).

maven said...

I have never been in a book club...so I'm really looking foward to this. I imagine once we've decided on a title, we should give a month to read it. Then we can start discussing it on the Book Blog starting on a specific day (for instance, the last Wednesday of the month -- to keep it on a Lost day). The question I have is: Would there be a list of discussion points/questions or just an open discussion how it relates to Lost?

Capcom said...

Didn't Admin say that he was going to try to get someone who has an "in" with TPTB to find the top five books that they would suggest reading for understanding Lost better? Watership Down" should most certainly be one of them.

Okay, the lowest price is .75, and still in good condition.

I'm excited about book club! The sooner we know which one the better (for me). I may need to get a head start!

OFF TOPIC-Ok interesting moment happened this afternoon... my daughter has the movie Cinderella 3 (I know- I can't believe they've made sequels to Cinderella either), and my daughter loves to go around singing the songs, etc. (she's 7). Anyway, there is a catchy/cute song during the end credits, and I've noticed that whoever sings it has a really good voice...well after the credits they put the music video of the song on. I just happen to look up and see it's Heroes Hayden Panetiere (Claire Bennett)! I had no idea she could sing- much less, so well. It was just a little wierd to see the cheerleader singing the song at the end of my daughter's video. eh well, exciting life I lead.

Black_rock, Hugh McIntyre is more Lost Experience lore. He was the Communications Director for the Hanso Foundation in 2006 and was killed in a car crash along with his mistress during the course of the ARG. He told us Hanso shut down Dharma in the 80s.

I wonder if any of these Hanso people will show up even as just a name in a document during this week's episode?

If any one reads this soon can you tell me wat time it is where you guys are ive been wondering its currently 9.48pm here in perth australia . I got my copy of Watership down today so i wait till finale to start reading.

Ill check back soon bye bye

I'm listening to the podcast and I like the Brigadoon idea. I think we might need to turn it on its head though. In Brigadoon if you love someone so much to give up your life and stay with that person, you are permitted to stay in Brigadoon. In LOST, I think that Desmond has to finally love Penny enough to risk everything to stay with her and totally ignore Mrs. Hawking. And then, when he makes that choice the Island will disappear forever, time will reset and Flight 815 will arrive in Los Angeles but everyone will have this sneaking suspicion that they need to straighten their lives out and they will.

I haven't listened to all the podcast yet, so if I'm repeating, please forgive me.

Unknown said...

black_rock

The aussie accent could be confused with a Cockney accent, but Naomi's is definately a more Essex accent.

Penny's accent is the usual US-opinion, generic "posh bird with money" accent.

And there's no such thing as a "British" accent outside, but to non-Brits (notable Americans and Aussies) it's the well-spoken, upper crust, almost Imperial accent that's "British".

InEnglandAndLost said...

I'd say I have a british accent, being from the south, as does Dark angel. But there actually isn't any difference!

I think Shakey is right, Old time cockney sounds closer to Australian than nowadays Londoners accent.

memphish said...

All I can say is she's not from LA (Lower Alabama) and neither is A Coop. That was more of a South Georgia accent as opposed to Sawyer's North Georgia accent. :)

Dedjezter -- great segment on the podcast. I thought it was really great! I hope you'll do it again.

David and Steve, when you were talking about LOST - great stuff. Right now, I'm ignoring your talk about product placement as I type. Shorter is better guys. Shorter is better.

I guess I should save this post for the next thread that they might actually read.

A comment on the OT portion of your post.
My daughter will be 10 in July and she has watched the Disney Channel for ever. My reaction to Hayden Panetiere was completely opposite to yours. I know here from Disney she was in a 9/11 Disney movie called Tiger Cruise and I seen her music video before the movie came out. So my reaction was shock at the violent role she plays in Heros. My daughter wanted to watch it because she was in it. Of course I had to say no. Most of the kids that have work for Disney are multi talented.

DarkUFO posted a good review of The Brig by Fishbiscuit, in case no one mentioned it here yet. It's funny(strange), she mentions Thunderdome in speaking of the Black Rock, and I had pulled out my old Thunderdome tape earlier this week because I was making some connections of it with Lost in my head. I had forgotten the words, and when I heard them again, they really sounded Lost-like:

Out of the ruins
Out of the wreckage
Can't make the same mistake this time
We are the children
The last generation
We are the ones they left behind
And I wonder when we are ever gonna change
Living under the fear till nothing else remains
We don't need another hero
We don't need to find the way home
All we want is life beyond Thunderdome

I applied the song in my head to maybe a post Others vs. Beachers war, and the kids that were left behind to try to make a life with what they were left with, i.e., the dark legacy of the DI/Other mistakes, mixed with the lessons learned post-crash, by the Losties and their (and their parents') mistakes. Maybe they will do a spinoff in a few years! But, could my life take it?! Maybe not. :-) It would at least give us someting to blog about until 2020! Haha.

Hi all,

I've only just finished watching this weeks episode in the UK and I am catching up with the comments.

My first thought about the Hell/Purgatory thing was it was TPTB's way of telling us that this was the simple explanation but we had to come up with another explanation.

Also did anyone else think that Sawyers comment about the blow everything up tour was dubbed on afterwards, as a nod to the fans ?

Melissa_Lossa said...

Okay, so I leave for one afternoon and I get elected to book club leader?! LOL!

I'm happy to do it. Summer is much slower for me here at work, so I should have plenty of time.

I'm thinking one book a month - do we want to go June - December? Then we have a few weeks in January to get back on board before the new season starts.

I like Watership Down as the first book as well - I've never read it. We'll have seven months. How's this for a line-up (in no particular order):

Watership Down
The Third Policeman
A Wrinkle in Time
Our Mutual Friend
Catch-22
Carrie
The Wizard of Oz

I'm also thinking of Turn of the Screw, An Occurance at Owl Creek Bride, or Of Mice and Men.

I'm open to suggestions! Leave me your thoughts here, or e-mail me at piper.emily@gmail.com.

I can't wait!

Zort70 said...

Regarding the announcement, it is a bit odd for US series to do this, but in the UK decent drama series rarely last more than 13 episodes a year at the outside.

If we don't have lost and we don't have another TLE then what Lost spin off show could we have ?

How about "Lost : The Legend of the Black Rock"

Melissa_Lossa said...

Dark UFO has a great list here: http://lostbooks.blogspot.com/

Passafist said...

If she had said Gov'ner I totally would have know Naomi was from England!! Sorry man, I just assumed.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Happy Birthday, InEnglandAndLost!

Erich said...

Melissa: that book list sounds great. It's a good mix and seems doable. The books are widely available, and I don't think any of them are over-long.

Looking at Dark UFO's book list, I think you chose the best for a book club (The Stand, Fountainhead, History of Time, Karamazov etc. are probably too long or too complicated for a summer reading group).

Amused2bHere said...

I agree with erich. I am going to the library today to get Watership Down.

The rest also seem very well picked. This is going to really be a lot of fun!

thanks Melissa!

Melissa_Lossa said...

Don't forget - we have to have some books for next summer, too! :)

Any ideas on the order? I don't really have a preference, although I move that we do Carrie in December - it's shorter, and less involved, and I know that's always a crazy time with the holidays. Here's what I'm thinking:

Watership Down
The Wizard of Oz
The Third Policeman
A Wrinkle in Time
Our Mutual Friend
Catch-22
Carrie

That way, we're kind of alternating between long/short and easier/harder.

Oh, and erich - your 24 blog cracks me up. I actually enjoy reading the reactions the next day better than the show at this point!

memphish said...

I would make 1 change to the Book List. I would omit Our Mutual Friend. It's a good book. I really enjoyed it, but it's 800 pages and it's not particularly LOST related.

As for Turn of the Screw, Of Mice and Men and Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, each is pretty short -- 100 pages or so. I read of Mice and Men this past Saturday afternoon start to finish. I think you could put all three as 1 month's selection and people could read as many or few as they wanted.

Finally, (for now :D) I'd consider adding Lord of the Flies, and I'd reconsider A Short History of Time. Both of these are pretty short too. We might even just want to pick a chapter or two of SHOT that seems most relevant unless time travel is debunked by the end of the year.

memphish said...

Happy Birthday IEAL! Hope it's a great one.

memphish said...

Back to books, I started reading A Wrinkle in Time to my son last night. My new theory is that Ben is Charles Wallace from that book. I can't wait to see if Ben has siblings and his relationship to his parents. This could further cement that theory.

I'm also reading Joseph Campbell's Hero with 1000 Faces right now. Very interesting stuff about heroes and their quests. If you haven't read Doc Arzt's Locke Hero Theory that uses a lot of Campbell's stuff and you have some time, be sure to check it out. It's spoiler-free.

memphish said...

What isn't spoiler-free is the new article at EW.com with DL and CC talking about the scheduling announcement and the rest of this season. I provide you the link, but I haven't read it at all. Read at your own peril.

Melissa_Lossa said...

wow, memphish - glad you're on top of things! I agree, if Our Mutual Friend is 800 pages, we should drop that one. Let's consider it extra credit, shall we? ;)

How about this for a revised list:

June - Watership Down
July - The Wizard of Oz/Incidence at Owl Creek Bridge
August - The Third Policeman
September - A Wrinkle in Time
October - Turn of the Screw/Of Mice and Men
November - Catch-22
December - Carrie

Any suggestions on where to fit in Lord of the Flies? As for A Brief History of Time, I'd love for someone to recommend a couple of chapters that we could intersperse throughout the hiatus. I think several people have voiced an aversion to reading it straight through as one of the selections.

memphish said...

Melissa, I think with respect to SHOT, we should see where we end up after the Season Finale and then try to pull a chapter or two to pair with A Wrinkle in Time perhaps. WIT is pretty short and coming after 3rd Policeman it would link in pretty well.

As for Lord of the Flies, maybe we'll have an optional January book? It's short, 200 short pages and would be good for getting us back in stranded on an Island mode.

Scoutpost said...

Hey everybody!
re: book club- we could also read books during the season (like memphish). But maybe leave some easy/short ones and do it at a slower pace since we are on here all the time. Guess we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

Hey sayid's girl- re: Hayden P. Yeah we don't have Disney channel, so the video was a real surprise to me. They do turn out some talented kiddos.

IEAL- Happy Birthday!!!

Anonymous said...

Coming out of lurkdom to say I think this book club idea is great. And my birthday is May 23. I'll consider the season finale a gift to me from TPTB!

Melissa_Lossa said...

memphish - I like that idea (about Brief History). And actually, it seems like I saw somewhere that with the shortened seasons, the show won't be back until February. So, let's call Lord of the Flies our unofficial January book.

I also like the idea of reading some of the easier books during the season. There's several shorter books that Sawyer and others have been reading on the beach - those might be good "in season" choices.

Erich said...

I think the revised book list is great (good catch on OMF, Memphish).

And thanks, Melissa, for your kind words about our blog. Dave said it well: no matter what happens this season, I'll be back to see where Jack lands next year.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I'll be back for the Jack Bauer Power Hour next year as well. I'm kind of hoping that this season ends with the death of everyone except Jack and Chloe, so that they can just start over in a new city, with a new cast that we might actually care about.

PS - That comparison between Jack's nephew/son and Hank Venture was TOO funny, and dead on! :)

Erich said...

I think one of the problems with 24 is that they've already killed off basically everyone except Jack or Chloe (from the past seasons), but I definitely agree they should relocate next year...perhaps to a mysterious deserted island??? ("This season on Lost...there's a new Jack in town...")

Mr. Bauer could teach Sayid a thing or two about torture. Of course, if he were on the island he'd only have to spend an hour or so with Ben to get all the answers out of him, and I don't know what they'd do with the last 47 episodes.

Zort70 said...

So if we have 3 more seasons of 16 and 3 more this season that makes 51 episodes in total.

Who's going to start the countdown avatar now ?

Melissa_Lossa said...

erich - "There's a new Jack in town" - I love it!

It would never work, though. Chloe would just set up a perimeter and have them all off the island in no time!

Erich said...

Melissa: Yeah, but at least resident brits Desmond and Morris could go off drinking together...or start their own chapter of AA, whichever

Zort70 said...

Even Chloe would struggle to solve some of the cryptic clues that the others give out.

Melissa_Lossa said...

zort - you take that back! Chloe would figure it out in no time! :)

I love the idea of Morris and Des getting drunk and singing on the beach. Ha!

I'm outta here for now. If anyone has any more thoughts on the book club, you can e-mail me at piper.emily@gmail.com

Peace and Namaste

Zort70 said...

How would Lost be different if key castaways were switched out for comparable 24 characters? and who would they be?

Ecko = David Palmer
Ben = every Eurotrash terrorist

His "Area 51" series, written using the pen name Robert Doherty, sounds interesting, too.

ok is it just me or is anyone else sick of hearing about the ipod phone???? it seems everyone is focusing on Sayid not having seen technology that advanced yet Hurley new exactly wat it was as soon as he saw it. I do not believe that the interface on the sateliite phone holds any relevence watsoever to the story of Lost other than it is a phone. Also Naomi could br from australia i know i said earlier she had an english accent and i still believe she is from england as i sat in ,my bobcat today going over my theories i remembered that most of the actors other than Claire( i dunno her name) who is australian had really crappy accents that didnt sound right at all so if you look at it like that she could be trying to sound Australian but bot doing it very well.

Also Naomis little story really bugged me to me she sounded really stupid "submarine with little robots" could TPTB not come up with some thing better than little robots i dunno maybe i just dont like Naomi

If she had said Gov'ner I totally would have know Naomi was from England!! Sorry man, I just assumed.

Brilliant, Love it!!!

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. The other half bought me horse riding lessons so I can start riding again, plus it looks good on the performers CV.

Got a screen test with the BBC this month too... Possible Childrens TV presenting. So really excited.

Can't wait until the ep airs so I can watch it tomorrow! Going to be a good one...

Great news IEAL. Break a leg -- in the audition, not on the horse, and keep us posted.

Black_rock, the iPhone thing is starting to get a little old, kind of like when everyone called Ben "Benry" for so long. Hopefully they'll clear up the phone's mysteries tonight and we can move on.

As for the staged crash, I'm not even sure it was in the ocean. It could have been faked on a soundstage since TPTB referenced the movie Capricorn One on the OLP. Hanso was supposedly in charge of the search and rescue/recovery. I wonder if they'll ever show us a scene of the "found" Flight 815. That would be fun.

For those of you who like your Wednesday pre-show Doc Jensen tease click here. I didn't even read the headline. Spoiler aversion is running high heading into the final 3 episodes. I've taped Matthew Fox from last night, but I probably won't watch until tomorrow for fear of clips.

Happy Lost Day!

Happy belated birthday InEnglandAndLost. I have added you to "the list", along with Kristy.

Guess What? I WON an 42" plasma TV in a raffle yesterday. Crazy. Unfortunately, there's not enough time to watch LOST in HD by tonight, but hopefully before the season finale!

FYI, I'm way behind on reading comments, but I hope to catch up by tonight.

Good Morning LoCos Happy Lost Day.
Hey Ange
I've read those books on line too, but I found two completely different links than yours. I also found a link to The Brothers Karamozov but it's way to long. Last season I was looking for every book I seen. I also read a little bit of The Epic of Gilgamesh. I recently found a link to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Memphish
Thanks for the EW links I've been saving them up till after the shows.

Our local CW station, KTLA, prreempted "Gilmore Girls" last night to cover a big fire in Griffith Park! They have not yet announced a re-air time. Does anyone know where I can find it on-line?

BLACK_ROCK said...

maybe at www.tvfreeload.com u might be able to find gilmore girls not too sure

memphish said...

Sorry about the Gilmore Girls problem Maven. Have you tried looking on KTLA's website for info or emailing them? I just checked their myspace and the CW, but it doesn't look like they have the full episodes. Some other people on the myspace had the same problem.

memphish said...

Maven, I found this on KTLA's website:

SO CAL Fans Gilmore Girls will re-aired this Sat night 5/12/07 at 8pm & Veronica Mars at 9pm.

Yes, I'm waiting for the dew on my grass to evaporate so that I can cut it. Anyone else need a problem solved? :)

maven said...

Thanks all for your suggestions! I did find out about the Saturday 8 pm airing...but I thought I could catch it sooner on-line! It was not at tvfreeload.com, black_rock, but thanks anyway. Boy, a lot of Gilmore Girl fans were really upset last night! And, to top it off, the KTLA website gave a major spoiler away while fans were looking around for the re-air announcement!

Sorry, this is OT!

To get back On Topic -- any spoiler-free predictions for tonight?

Was Ben on the Island his whole life?
Who/what is Jacob?
Is there a man behind the curtain?
Is that Juliet dressed like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz in the promo?
Will we find out who the woman with the hamster is?
What will Marvin Candle/Mark Wickman's name be tonight?
Will there be TLE shoutouts?

Here's a snippet from People's coverage of last nights American Idol: "Lost and Found: In past seasons, Lost executive producer Damon Lindelof says he had to stay mum about his American Idol obsession because the Fox juggernaut aired in the same time slot as his ABC drama. "This is the first year I'm out of the closet as an Idol fan," he tells PEOPLE. "Nobody can give me crap for cheering on Blake." Lindelof, who attended Tuesday night's show with wife Heidi, jokes that fans of Idol and Lost shouldn't fret that the shows' two-hour May 23 season finales overlap between 9 and 10 p.m. "I promise nothing good will happen the last 10 minutes of the nine o'clock hour so people can see who wins and then they can switch over to Lost and it will really get good."

Tess315 said...

Ok let's see ummm.
Has Ben been on the island his whole life? I'm going to say yes. I can't think of a reason he'd lie about that.
Who/what is Jacob. I'm sure he's not but I'm going say maybe Richard Alpert. I think he is at least more important than he appears.
Is there a man behind the curtain?
If there is it's Ben. The man behind the curtain isn't that powerful(in Oz) and since we've been to Otherville I haven't thought Ben is the one in charge.
...Juliet dressed like Dorothy...?
I don't know but sure looks like her doesn't it.
...who the woman with the hamster is? (you mean the portrait in Ben's house?) I thought is was Juliet possibly Karen DeGroot.
What will Marvin/Mark's name be tonight? I'm going to say Mark Wickman. I'm guessing this is before he lost his arm.
Will there be TLE shoutouts?
It would be cool but sadly probably not.

memphish said...

Thanks for playing Sayid's Girl. Is everyone else out reading Watership Down?

maven said...

Memphish: I'm going to the library shortly to get my copy!

As to you questions re predictions:
1. He is telling the truth. He was born on the island.
2. I'm torn with this Jacob thing. If you follow the Wizard of Oz analogy, then Jacob is something Ben made up. But, Jacob can be a real person...maybe Locke!
3. See #2.
4. I think that ghostly figure is Ben's mother.
5. See #4.
6. Marvin's last name tonight will be Canwick!
7. I sure hope there is some tidbit about TLE tonight!

Happy Lost Day!

Congrats Dennis! That is a huge win!

Memphish: Fun, I'll play along...

1. Was Ben on the Island his whole life?

yes

2. Who/what is Jacob?
I think Jacob is a 'what', but I don't know what yet.

3. Is there a man behind the curtain?

Yes, and Ben seems to have been playing the part.

4. Is that Juliet dressed like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz in the promo?

don't think so

5. Will we find out who the woman with the hamster is?

Yes, Ben's mom perhaps

6. What will Marvin Candle/Mark Wickman's name be tonight?

Martin Flame

7. Will there be TLE shoutouts?

Dharma Initiative is going to be discussed, but alot of TLE was based on present time so then... no.

Hey, everyone! It's quiet here for a Wednesday. I cannot wait for tonight's episode!!

Here's my thoughts on the questions:

Was Ben on the Island his whole life? Yes, I think so.

Who/what is Jacob? I have no idea, but I'm SURE he's someone that we've seen before.

Is there a man behind the curtain? I agree that Ben is the man behind the curtain. Jacob might work the occasional miracle, but Ben does must of the show.

Is that Juliet dressed like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz in the promo? It certainly looks like her, but I have my doubts. I'm going to say no.

Will we find out who the woman with the hamster is? I also think this is Karen deGroot and/or Ben's mother. I'm undecided as to whether or not they are the same person.

What will Marvin Candle/Mark Wickman's name be tonight? This is one thing I've never thought too much about. Does he have one name with the arm and one without it? I'm not sure on this one.

Will there be TLE shoutouts? I think so. With so many Dharma connections, it would be hard to leave out all elements of the game. I hope there's a shout out of some kind!

Oh, and that 24/Lost/House crossover was too funny! My favorite part is:

Sayid tries to get radio communication. Nothing but static. They’re 2,000 miles from civilization. Jack’s cellphone rings.

Oh, and luckyguylikeme - do not fear! Season 6 of 24 sucks but Season 5 was a frakkin' masterpiece. The best is yet to come!
