THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN - SEASON 3, EPISODE 20

Ben begrudgingly begins to introduce Locke to the secrets of the island, beginning with the mysterious Jacob. What is compelling Ben to reveal his secrets to Locke? Who will Jacob be? How will Locke responde? What will we learn about the history of the Dharma initiative? With questions like these, we can't help but get some cool answers!

Hi, everybody! Nice to be at the top. Enjoy watching the show. I'll catch up with you in a few days and see you on SOTL.

Capcom said...

See ya soon Twinkle! Hope that all is well with you.

Black Swan said...

7th... lucky number

Can't wait for 10pm.. and who do you think will get kicked off AI? I have no clue.

Twinkle said...

At the top of my wish list of reveals for the night - whether or not Smokey was on the island before Dharma got there.

Twinkle said...

Hi, Capcom! We're good! Potty training the Balloon Fairy. You?

Amused2bHere said...

Chucklez--> you go poof? First you're here, then grr, then poof.

Wha?

See everyone later, in the after time.

Anonymous said...

i'm around. was on, but no one was here, so i got off and i am checking off and on.

Ange said...

1 hour. That is all I have to say. Oh also, I am feeling giddy. Is that wrong?

Melissa_Lossa said...

One hour! Can't wait!

I'm stuck working again, but luckily I'm at home on my laptop tonight. :)

Capcom said...

I'm in potty training too. J/K! Good luck with that, just promise her more dress-up clothes if she does good! :o)

I'm excited too Ange! eeeeeeee!

LGLM, I gave in and watched Matthew Fox on Leno last night. No spoilers. Boring MF stories, but Larry the Cable Guy. I don't care who you are; he's funny.

CattyGirl said...

Happy Lost Day! I'm soooo looking forward to this one!!!

Evangeline Lilly is on Kimmel tonight if anyone's interested. Lost Media usually has it for download the next day in case you miss it.

ugh........might just hit the rack after the show. if so, talk to everyone later. enjoy.

peace and nomar's nasty

Dennis said...

Good evening everyone!

I have a general question for everyone before the show starts...

Do you get Lost in letterbox on your local ABC station? Obviously, I mean standard TV, not high-def.

I don't :( but I was wondering if it is just my local ABC, or does everyone get it that way.

On the other hand, I do get "The Office" in letterbox.

Melissa_Lossa said...

dennis - I don't get it letterboxed, either. Bummer.

memphish said...

Dennis, I'm not sure about the letterbox thing, but I'll look tonight.

I may be sporadic tonight, but I'm taking notes.

Darkaardvark said...

Oh man...I was totally convinced that opening was on the island. Unless the island is 32 miles outside of Portland. Ben = Roger Work Man's boy?

Melissa_Lossa said...

So, thebookpolice was closest, it seems - Ben isn't Roger himself, but perhaps Roger's son.

And question answered - Ben was NOT born on the island.

Dennis said...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEN!

Darkaardvark said...

Yeah, I the tbp was close when I saw an actor credited as "Roger Linus" in the casting for the episode. Of course, it's not 100% certain, and it's just a guess on my part, but they're not going to do something stupid like name a random character Jacob. They're careful.

Dennis said...

And, Ben did not "plant" the tape recorder so Locke would take it.

Darkaardvark said...

Ben = The Pope. The only one who can talk to God.

Unknown said...

long dormant commenter here, came into tonight's ep a few minutes late; can someone quickly recap what happened up to the first commercial break?

Darkaardvark said...

Ben finds out the tape recorder got stolen. Locke drops off Cooper's body.

In a flashback, we see Ben being born- off the island. 32 miles outside of Portland.

Unknown said...

great; thanks much

Tim said...

welcome back to not being a complete wussbag, john locke

memphish said...

Wow! So far so good. People who like Season 1 Locke should by psyched.

Tim said...

"Ben = The Pope. The only one who can talk to God."

Not so much... more like the old Jewish tradition where the High Priest could only enter the tabernacle once a year.

Darkaardvark said...

Obligatory "Hahaha, Dharma Initiative are hippies!" comment.

How the heck does Ben get away with lying so obviously when there must have been dozens of Dharma people who saw him come to the island, that knew he wasn't born there. He's full of BS, and the only way no one could know he's lying is if they weren't there before the purge.

Ben is one of the last remnants of Dharma in the Others faction, the rest are the Hostiles. How does that sound?

Tim said...

Hey! What happened to word verification? This is wonderful!

Dennis said...

Ben = Pope

Locke = Chuck Norris

Anonymous said...

yeah!!! that's my boy!!!

Anonymous said...

kate is a retard.

Darkaardvark said...

And guess who has daddy issues....Benjamin Linus!

*sigh* It seems like it's kind of a crutch for the writers.

Tim said...

I'm still not trusting the promo department. I'm still thinking we'll get no answers tonight.

Darkaardvark said...

Theory: Jacob's some crotchety old guy who lives in that house that we saw in the promo.

Some crotchety old guy who is REALLY, REALLY special. And has a hell of a lot of ammo.

Anonymous said...

dark: yeah, tell me about it.

memphish said...

You're still listening to the promo department Tim?

Dennis, regular through the box ABC is not letterbox. Without a box my HDTV automatically stretches. But HD is the bomb!

Anonymous said...

jacob = white-haired chinese kung-fu master.

memphish said...

I thought the gun was to keep Ben in line, not Jacob.

Anonymous said...

heck.......i stopped listening to the producers a year ago. let alone the promo geeks.

Tim said...

Jacob = on vacation. we won't meet him.

memphish said...

So does Jacob = David Carradine Chucklez? :)

Anonymous said...

made it back in time from the concert ! great epi so far !

loving badass locke <3

Anonymous said...

no. the old long-haired master in most kung-fu flicks. the one that's like 117 years old and can whip 33 people's butt in like 12 seconds....with a leaf.

Unknown said...

So did anyone else's audio cut out during the opening scene, during the birth? Maybe that was just here in Cleveland...

Unknown said...

Wow his dad is a huge jerk.

Anonymous said...

oof, ben's dad is a ...... big fat meanie .

Anonymous said...

zzzzzz............hasn't the drunken mean father bit been done way too many times already?

Tim said...

Ben, Smoke Monster; Smoke Monster, Ben

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

"it's not time yet".....gee, can i call it?

i told you. smokey = harbinger of death.

Anonymous said...

oh dear lord.

jack: "where'd you get that"?

ugh...

Tim said...

Mark the tents and make it a trap!

Unknown said...

Wow I hate Jack.

Anonymous said...

jack is simple. juliet is sooooo setting them up.

this is soooo obvious.

tie up juliet and put her in a "marked tent".

memphish said...

Seriously Jack is still being dumb! He's driving me nuts and how would Juliet know that was on there when Locke gave the tape to Sawyer?

memphish said...

Sayid needs to tie up Jack and Juliet and the rest of them need to bugout!

memphish said...

So is Ben the poor version of Jack? I so wanted that to be MacCutcheon whiskey.

Tim said...

I don't think Juliet had to know exactly what was there, she knew generally how Ben would respond.

Darkaardvark said...

Because she knew what she was there to do, obviously. It's not like she didn't know why they wanted to know if Sun was pregnant or not.

Is Ben's childhood romance going to fail (possibly when she dies), setting up his motivation for keeping Alex away from Karl?

Anonymous said...

sayid.......can i have a word with you???

Alpert???????????

Anonymous said...

gee.........father time has been kind to richard.

Tim said...

well, you don't really age when you're in PURGATORY!!!

Unknown said...

How old is present day Ben supposed to be, if Alpert is that much older than him?

Anonymous said...

thank you tim!!!! a believer!!!

Anonymous said...

.......or were you mocking my theory???

Unknown said...

This has to be the game-changing episode.

Darkaardvark said...

Called it.

Anonymous said...

*rocking in my chair*......

....oooohhhh........if i'm right about purgatory......

Kimber said...

oooooh Alpert with a wig lol

Tim said...

No, not mocking. I can't say that I'm a firm believer in it, but man, it still fits really well. I can't rule it out!!

Anonymous said...

oh shut up ben.

Anonymous said...

thanks tim. that's all i've ever asked.

Anonymous said...

oh..........my............god........

Anonymous said...

slap jacob!!!

Anonymous said...

errrrr??

Anonymous said...

what da deuce????

Anonymous said...

when was the house from the evil dead dropped on the island???

Anonymous said...

gee..........a "ghost" asking to be "helped"...

asking to be guided from purgatory perhaps???

Anonymous said...

oh you have GOT to be kidding me .

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS .

Tim said...

so yeah, definitely a guy shows up there for a few frames

Beana said...

Duuuude......

memphish said...

So it's Psycho? Jacob = Mrs. Bates. Ben does sort of look like Norman and there have been the Hurley-birds. Or is he a poltergeist.

I can't wait to find out what is in the whispers.

Maybe Jacob is Dave. Was there dust in the chair seat or not?

megan said...

whaaaaaaat? seriously? ugh.
i just..i dunno.
this could be game changing and epic, or a huuuge cop-out on behalf of TPTB. a ghost? seriously?

ugh.

Darkaardvark said...

It's. Not. Purgatory.

Tim said...

interesting. some "answer!"

megan said...

memphish..didn't even think about the mother/jacob..or even father/jacob angle.

so confused at the moment.
and UGH at juliet. i still hate her..but she can explain EVERYTHING she gets into. i hope jack redeems himself!

Anonymous said...

let's see dark....hmmm.........not saying it's 100% true. but seriously, you have a "rational" explanation for the "fun-house" and the DEAD passengers of 815??

Tim said...

"Ben - Work Man"

Anonymous said...

"Workman"....

Anonymous said...

heehee.........the happy van

Anonymous said...

gonna kill daddy...

Anonymous said...

umm..........it's called opening the door genius

Darkaardvark said...

I'll be glad to debate in depth after the episode. In short, though, what if Jacob is real and Locke just can't see him? Smokey doesn't mean they're in purgatory either.

Anonymous said...

ummm.......why wouldn't locke be able to see a live person???

makes no sense.

and explain smokey. again.......it's a theory. and i'll hold onto it until proven definitively otherwise.

Anonymous said...

ooh. the dharma-pit.

Darkaardvark said...

Oh man, I was right- Ben was the last remaining member of Dharma after the Hostiles took over during the purge.

Anonymous said...

son of a bitch!!!

Anonymous said...

if locke dies, i'm done.

Tim said...

Holy. Crap.

Darkaardvark said...

Was that last line- "My people- they're coming right NOW!" Alex?

Anonymous said...

OH MY GOD .

if they kill john locke, i swear, idk what i'll do .

Anonymous said...

i cannot believe that just happened

Ange said...

darkaardvark: I thought that was either Karl or Naomi.

Anonymous said...

hmmm..........and let's see. if everyone believes there's a jacob and the ONE "non-believer" doesn't......yet HE hears jacob when the believer does NOT....

yeah, i'm leaving that open for discussion.

Darkaardvark said...

If they kill Locke, they damn well better kill Jack.

I don't think Locke is dead, though. Come on. The island *likes* him. Besides, where's the answers and game-changer in the finale if Locke isn't saved by... Jacob?

Tim said...

I just... man. Too much to process from that last 5 minutes.

Ben is ultimately evil.

Locke is dead - maybe? I can't imagine he's really gone.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Wait.... what?!

I agree, Locke is not going to die.

Carissa said...

WOW! Too much to take in. Brain hurts!

Darkaardvark said...

That I'm not sure of. So Ben puts on a show for John, he can't hear or see Jacob, but he knows that Jacob really is there?

Anonymous said...

locke will not die. he is "liked" cuz he is to lead them to salvation. possibly anyway.

Tim said...

So... did Ben "purge" his girlfriend?

Unknown said...

I agree. If Locke dies I am done as well.

Beana said...

I can't even begin to comprhend all this now. Holy crap!

What's with all the daddy issues?

Melissa_Lossa said...

Interesting that Ben could not actually hear jacob. Very interesting.

Although, that does make Ben some kind of fruitcake. Dharma Fruitcake.

Anonymous said...

and explain the crap flying around and all the stuff moving on its own.

hardly a "wind".

Tess315 said...

WOW That was interesting. Maybe that's why Alex gave Locke the gun she knew what her "dad" would do.

Tim said...

To all of you saying you are done if Locke dies... you are LIARS! :)

Anonymous said...

yuck. all fruitcake sucks. blech!!

memphish said...

Wow! I bow to TheBookPolice! Great call TBP! How spoiled were you?

I'm just stunned about the ending. We've never seen anyone heal from a gunshot. I thought Ben would hit him again to make sure though.

Ben's mother was Emily as was Locke's. Right?

megan said...

my brain hurts. i cannot even debate this right now. if locke is dead, i will be so mad. simply because, even though his dad is dead/problem resolved, we are too far invested in these characters to just have them die for no reason. he has a communion w/the island that ben is jealous of, and he'll do anything to stop it. but i think ben isn't giving the island/jacob enough credit for what it can do [i.e., saving locke.]

AMEN to jack in the promos saying he's gonna blow them all to hell when they show up. i NEEDED him to be jack again and not some idiot. and if juliet is REALLY on their side, i'll be okay with her. it's just the not knowing that bothers me. sigh. =]

Unknown said...

So that kinda makes sense. Ben wasn't serious about Jacob, but Jacob spoke to Locke. Ben realized this, and had to kill Locke so that he wouldn't lose control? I think that kind of makes sense.

Carissa said...

melissa_lossa, Ben did hear Jacob. He told Jacob he couldn't hear Locke over him shouting. Unless of course he was lying that he heard him. But then I would think Jacob wouldn't like that.

At least, Ben didn't hear what Jacob said to Locke. Maybe Jacob can speak to individuals without others hearing like he did with Ben and Locke watching on.

Anonymous said...

tim.....true. but seriously. i will send ABC and Abrams a nice little "NASTY-GRAM"!!

Anonymous said...

memphish: what did the bookpolice say?

Melissa_Lossa said...

oh, nice catch on the Emily's, memphish :) That is very interesting as well.

People have healed from gunshots, but never the infamous gutshot.

Anonymous said...

locke can't die . ill be proud of TPTB if he does and they throw us a curve, but seriously, i just cried a little .

AND JUST FOR THE RECORD: can you STOP being all snotty towards each other in these message boards ? im not hatin but my god, you're like a bunch of 12 year old girls sometimes .

megan said...

LOL tim, don't worry..as upset as i'd be at locke's death, i would not stop watching! =]

Tim said...

I definitely think Ben was threatened by Locke's newfound outgoing personality. Richard and Tom didn't respond to Ben when he asked them for help with Mikhail.

My two huge questions (besides if Locke will die) are:
1. Is Ben so bad that he killed his own little girlfriend?
2. What's with the aging thing with Alpert?

Black Swan said...

OMG..... Well, I guess that explains why Locke had to kill his father to join the Ben club

Most interesting to me is Alpert

Island will heal Locke? Is he really dead?

Anonymous said...

Ben SAID Locke was "special". there you go.

Unknown said...

Lol Tim, of course you're right, I could never actually stop watching.

Darkaardvark said...

And FYI, I just went back over the scene and we do NOT see Jacob- that's Locke face in close-up.

And we definitely see Jacob shoving back Locke from the chair.

Jacob reminds me of Sylar's telekinesis. That's the only explanation. And whether that means it's purgatory or not (it's not) there's definitely something out of the ordinary going on. I don't think anyone thinks it was a "wind." He was definitely telekinesis-style levitating those objects all over the place. And maybe he actually shoved Ben, I don't know.

Man, this episode rocked. John Locke getting shot in the gut is exactly the reason I didn't read any spoilers this week.

Melissa_Lossa said...

But, did Ben really hear Jacob, or was he just making that all up?

Tim said...

"And FYI, I just went back over the scene and we do NOT see Jacob- that's Locke face in close-up."

No, it's before that. There's definitely another man in the room. Bearded, long hair.

Carissa said...

So if we hear the whispers again, does that mean there is more than one invisible person running around the island? Jacob and a whole host of others?

Unknown said...

Yeah also Tim, I noticed how once everyone heard that Ben was taking Locke to Jacob, they stopped responding to him. They wouldn't help Mikhail under Ben's orders or anything.

Anonymous said...

oh my god. TELEKINESIS?????

please stop with the "heroes" crossover stuff. ugh.

i sure as hell hope not.....or as you said, ("it's not")

Carissa said...

I think that Ben did hear and see Jacob, but Jacob has the ability to speak to people without others hearing. Maybe he speaks by telepathy into others' minds. That way, no one will hear be the person he intends to hear.

And I don't think Locke will die. Jacob obviously wants him to help him. He won't let it happen.

megan said...

experimentalfilm-
who was being snotty? i must have missed that. =[

lol..i just tried to get on lostpedia and it said in big letters, "LOSTPEDIA HAS A PROBLEM". it just struck me as funny..guess i'm easily amused. =]

my brain is still aching..i love to hear all your theories/ideas, but i seriously cannot think of any right now other than I thought Ben had snapped after his daddy issues and he was talking to an empty chair rofl. then Locke heard him, and I was just..astonished that this was so blatantly supernatural [or seems to be at least] and TPTB are standing by their assertion that everything can be explained. i dunno.

Unknown said...

So since both Alpert and Ben have said that most of The Others have been brought to the island, does this mean that Alpert is the only remaining native/hostile? Or was Ethan one too?

Melissa_Lossa said...

Tim, I thought that was odd about Alpert as well - in the flashback, he appeared to be about 20 years older than Ben - but wouldn't that make him close to 60 now?

I'd also like to point out the vast array of man purses in this episode. Dharma must have been having a sale.

Anonymous said...

anyone ever heard of people seeing and hearing spirits?? etc.....

Unknown said...

And I must say, thanks you to you all... I'm glad I can rely on you all to help me stay away from spoilers... LOST is definitely better spoiler-free.

Black Swan said...

The whispers were the hostiles?

I thought it was Ben's telekinesis that caused the ruckus in the "Jacob's house"

Anybody remember the Sherif's name? Was it the same as Ben's childhood girlfriend?

I gotta watch that again!

Carissa said...

Hum... I don't think Jacob is a spirit. I mean, I think he's a real person but somehow invisible. Who knows? And we won't find out for a long time I bet.

Melissa_Lossa said...

It strikes me that the "telekinesis" scene was reminicent of Carrie. Could help explain why Ben finds Carrie so depressing.

Anonymous said...

lmao man purses .

Tim said...

What if all the "hostiles" don't age? Alpert is the only one we saw... but it could be true of all of them.

I guess this means that the hostiles continued to try to recruit people to the island – after all, it was Alpert that recruited Juliette.

memphish said...

Good call Melissa_Lossa on the gunshots. Sawyer manages to heal, but no one else. Gutshots kill people!

Chucklez, last week after the episode TBP said that he thought The Man Behind the Curtain was Roger Workman, a nobody, like the Wizard. I'm paraphrasing greatly.

TBP, repost and claim your accolades.

megan said...

hm lucky..i assumed that alpert was simply because he's the only one we saw..i guess everyone else got recruited. although even that scene [the gassing scene] had to be several years ago..to form a whole new community and have all these bodies decomposed in such an advanced way.
and on that note..my first thought seeing alpert was "hanso foundation..life extension project"! haha. that has got to mean something because he does NOT naturally look that way still. ben was at least 11, and probably older, when they got to the island and that was definitely in the early 70s [as evidenced by the amount of hippies lol].

Darkaardvark said...

Not spirits that can throw canning jars around the room, no.

And as for TPTB saying they can explain everything, they don't mean within perfectly normal scientific terms. Lindelof/Cuse compared it to a Crichton novel.

Certainly Smokey is pretty darn hard to explain in the realm of science, but in pseudoscience it's easy.

Jacob's a bit more puzzling.

Carissa said...

codysmom, do you mean that you think Ben's telekenesis caused the rukus eventhough Jacob was there? Have we seen a time when Ben had telekenetic powers? I don't remember.

memphish said...

Codysmom, the sheriff is Isabell.

Anonymous said...

but purgatory.....NOOOOOOO......that's just "retarded"?? hahaha.... eh. it's MY dream!! hahaha.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Jacob doesn't have to be a spirit - he could have been in the closet, using his telekinesis out of sight.

The creators have said that everything will have some basis in science - and there has been a lot of scietific study of telekinesis, so I don't think this is cheating.

Tim said...

Darkaardvark - did you go back and see Jacob?

Erich said...

I guess now we'll see whether or not Locke truly was/is "the one." Given how self-centered he's been the past few episodes, I thought he might get his comeuppance. I never thought they'd kill him, though!

Good job, TPTB for not actually showing him die...you know what that will do to us.

So it sure seems like Jacob is real (I'm sure you all saw the quick shot of him sitting in the chair). I don't know whether Ben was talking to Jacob before Locke heard his voice, but either way I think Ben got super pissed because no one else was supposed to be able to communicate with Jacob. If Ben had somehow lost the ability to talk to Jacob, that would add a whole other level.

The fact that Jacob asked Locke to help him suggests a couple things: he's not omnipotent; and Ben has somehow subverted his authority (fits into what Alpert told Locke last week).

Maybe the original island inhabitants developed the ability to live forever (which would explain Alpert's not aging), but after a time their bodies "faded away" (which would explain the disembodied voices). Jacob could have been the oldest of those able to pull off this trick, but now is unable to do anything on his own--thus his reliance on Ben to carry out his wishes.

How this fits into science is beyond me...I don't think even Crichton would touch this one!

Carissa said...

Jacob was sitting in the chair. I saw him when he pushed Ben back. So he was using any powers he had while sitting in the room.

Anonymous said...

dark: they said "logically" and "rationally".

however, i never believed that.

memphish said...

But if Alpert's been there longer why doesn't "Jacob" talk to him and how does a young boy seeing visions of the mother he killed convince long-haired hostile Alpert that he can talk to the Island deity who lives in a shack? And where did the Hostiles come from? And where did Kelvin come from? Aaarrrggghhh!

And Jack is still dumb in my book. Why does he trust Juliet instead of his "friends" to come up with a plan? Why dumba@@ Jack? Why?

megan said...

well..thats true..it is an entertainment show, so its gotta be entertaining! not everything has to be perfectly explained..after all, the whole premise of the show is a bit outlandish. =]

i cannot wait to see next week's episode..although i doubt we'll be getting any jacob answers anytime soon unless locke communes w/him somewhere or something.

Black Swan said...

Carissa said...
codysmom, do you mean that you think Ben's telekenesis caused the rukus eventhough Jacob was there? Have we seen a time when Ben had telekenetic powers? I don't remember.

I mean Ben caused it and there is no Jacob.

thanks, memphis (Isabelle)

Carissa said...

If Ben is in control of Jacob, why would he be so scared to go see him? That doesn't make sense.

memphish said...

Telekenesis = Carrie = Juliet's favorite book that Ben finds depressing and obnoxious book club guy finds pedestrian.

Anonymous said...

thanks erich.

but i'll vote for the life extension deal with alpert.

i miss season 1 and 2 when it was about peoples relationships with each other and the others being mysterious and idk .. the plot was different . i like this stuff too, but i miss the old .

all i can say is that locke better live, they better explain jacob, and i better get some freakin answers before this is all over !

Darkaardvark said...

Tim:

I'm still looking. Can you help me pinpoint closer to where you saw him? Before or after "Help me?" Around what line?

And btw chucklez, look me up in ten years and if they haven't been able to cloak a man to, oh say 90% invisibility, I'll buy you a drink.

Carissa said...

codysmom, Jacob was seen sitting in the chair. Maybe your theory still works though if Ben caused Locke to see something and hear something.

Anonymous said...

you know what?

it's joop.

locke can't see him, but it's him. and he used telekinesis and he's invisible.

he also teleported out of the house before locke went outside. then, he time traveled to next week's episode to run camera 3.

megan said...

i like your ideas, erich..especially about alpert not aging. since he's the only "original" native left [outside of jacob, i guess] it makes sense that we don't really know what the natives experienced during their time there. they probably knew more how the island worked and stuff..and maybe part of its 'magic' is not aging. however, since he's still there, you'd think he'd be more active on stuff happening on the island or helping everyone understand the mystery on the others' side..i dunno. and you'd think going off-island [like to recruit juliet] the power wouldn't stay w/him and he'd probably die. buuut..maybe not. yet again, i just do not know.

Black Swan said...

I guess I have to look at that again

Darkaardvark said...

Tim: Never mind, I see it.

memphish said...

All right. I think the new first book club pick should be A Wrinkle in Time. Mini-me and I are on chapter 5 and the "helpers" are really old -- the youngest is over 2 billion years old, and the oldest one has a hard time making herself visible to the mere Earthlings of the book and they are in no way enslaved to time or space courtesy of the Tesseract.

Melissa_Lossa, maybe we should discuss this book thing more tomorrow.

Carissa said...

chucklez3, LOL! Love the Joop idea!

Tim said...

darkaardvark -

On my DVR it falls in minute 47...

look for the frames of jacob immediately after Ben is pushed away from the chair.

Anonymous said...

dark: ummm.......the show is actually in the PAST....so in ten years, i'll be waiting for my drink.

Erich said...

I'm thinking the Ben = Norman Bates isn't a bad analogy. Like Locke, he wanted so badly to be special that he gave up his "people" for the chance to be somebody. All that childhood trauma has cracked part of his brain. Whether Jacob exists (I believe he does) and can talk to Ben (not sure he can anymore), I think Ben believes Jacob is in control and capable of severe damage.

Unless of course...Ben is a telekentic with a split personality and his alter ego is Jacob. Nikki/Jessica anyone (for those who watch Heroes)?

Tim said...

Have we ever seen how many toes Alpert has? :)

I hate Nikki/Jessica. Please don't let Ben be Nikki/Jessica because he is so not hot and I'm saying that as a totally heterosexual woman.

tim: sweet.

i thought of the statue earlier in the episode.

If only that statue still had eyeliner, then we would know Tim.

i definitely hoped there would be more dharma/hanso stuff in this epi. i mean, learning about ben's childhood was very helpful to understanding him [and who roger was/how he died], but seeing some research or some lectures going on.. or someone from TLE even! [which would be a nice inside joke for us, but wouldn't have to take away from the story they're telling.] i wanna know more about WHAT IS/WAS GOING ON ON THE ISLAND. lol.

and as for the difference in seasons 1/2 and 3, i think they wanted us to get invested in the characters and they wanted the characters invested in each other. we needed the relationships to happen so we would care what happened to them. the background is laid out..now we're getting into the real action. i think season 4 is going to be amazing.

Haha Chucklez, yeah, Jacob should have been Pai Mei in Kill Bill! :-D And then he could pluck Ben's eye out!

I thought for sure for a minute that Ben was bonkers there in the cabin!!

Yeah, who's being snotty? Not a clue.

Memphish: Even I can appreciate that as a heterosexual man. In fact, just before he left in the van with his dad, Ben reminded me an awful lot of Buster from Arrested Development.

well, i'm rolling up my scroll of "the gospel of dan" (purgatory theory) and tucking it under my arm and putting it away.......for now. it's bedtime for bonzo.

Okay, I totally missed Jacob the first time around, but now I've found him - thank you, DVR! Creepy!!

So, Ben must be able to see him or at least sense him, to be able to know where he was.

I don't know though, when Ben was talking to him, he just sounded like someone making up his side of a conversation.

As for who's being snotty, it's probably me and chucklez. But we've just got strong opinions.

And as for the "in the past" thing: So was Star Wars. Bad comparison, yeah, but what I mean is that if it's technologically possible, to a reasonable pseudoscientific extent, I don't see why it can't be on Lost- even though it won't *really* be invented until the mysterious "future."

Does anyone else think the glass on the house's window broke inward?
