I'm beginning to think that Richard, Dogen, etc. all made deals with a man who called himself Jacob, but who was in fact MIB.
Selfishly, (and being a former teacher myself), it was fun seeing this episode with Ben as the teacher, underpaid, under appreciated, a bit of an idealist but still human with visions of grandeur.. Also nice that they are showing how important the people behind the kids are. I hope they show later that Alex becomes a great scientist and cures cancer or something.

Haven't kids been Ben's soft spot in all realities? Probably due to losing his mother- "sometimes I feel like a motherless child"- that's Ben. So fitting that his redemption would be in saving a child.

I'm glad Ben's FS showed him as a decent guy. Maybe not the Man in Charge that he was on the Island, but a decent fellow who takes care of his elderly sick dad, teaches for the love of it and really cares about the students. I guess he finally got some respect, if not all that he was looking for. After all, he can always use those emails anyway after Alex goes off to Yale..hm?

JT, kids are a soft spot for so many of them, really, and may prove to be involved in all their redemptions. Kate found her redemption in loving Aaron enough to do the right thing, Sawyer couldn't con those ppl when the little boy showed up and was in charge of Aaron when Claire disappeared, Jack was scared of being a father, but rose above it in his FS finally resolving his father issues with his own son, David, Hurley would give double airline dinners to Claire when she was pregnant, Jin gave Claire the fish that made Aaron active again after the crash, Sun and Claire had a lot in common and Sun would baby-sit Aaron all the time, Locke didn't want the son of Cooper's current con to get hurt. I think they will all finally get together in the end to help Claire. It seems to me Claire and Sayid are the only ones who really have the sickness right now? Sawyer is still weighing things that Flocke is showing him, but likes the idea of getting the hell of the Island so he's 'following' MIB right now. Kate will join that group of Smokey followers, but I think she's the one who will talk Sawyer into splitting off of that group. I'm not talking about some big Skate revival here, but I think Kate will convince him to think of his daughter, Clementine, and what kind of a person/dad a kid needs to look up to and what kind of Dad only thinks of himself? Hope Kate and Sawyer are the ones who come back to the beach camp next week!

Ben very cleverly through that in while they were right in front of Alex.. LOL, great stuff there. I think what Ben finally got was some self-respect. Appreciation doesn't always have to come from outside sources. It's not easy, but the best peace is in knowing you do the right thing and outside appreciation isn't necessary, then. But it is nice to get once in a while.
At first I thought FS Ben would say "Well I guess that means I'm out of the History Club".I'm glad that worked out for him too.

Interesting that so far, the people on Jacob/Ilana's side (Ben, Jack) are redeemed in the FS, those on MIB's side (Sayid, Kate?) not so much. Not sure what to make of Claire.
Need to mull things in sleep too. Don't know what to make of Locke being the one to urge Ben to stage a coup. Maybe just the way to put Ben in the situation where he needs to choose?

Jack has made the full journey to faith. wow. And I thought we'd never see it!
A few things really stood out for me in tonight's episode.
1. Jack is very much a man of faith now.
2. The power of grace brought Ben back from the edge of the darkside when Ilana said "I'll have you".
3. Ben chose Alex over power in the F/S.
4. Widmore! (I was really hoping Desmond would show up, though. Maybe he's with him?)
What a fantastic episode. What a different feeling it left me with compared to last week. Last week I felt despair after the destruction in the temple. This week I felt hope.
I was a little disappionted that we didn't get more detail about Richard's past, but what was hinted at is probably all we're going to get. Maybe the popup show next week will expand on those visual hints.
I do have one question though. How did Miles know about the diamonds? Did Nikki and Paolo tell him?
I'm just now wathcing the popup Sundown episode. The popups make a point of discussing the book Dogen was reading. Dark River.
I wonder if that book is significant to the story line.
I wonder if the reason Miles is on the island is so that he could be a post-mortem witness to Jacob's murder.

my guess is that Miles has been having "conversations" with the departed in the graveyard since they got there. he knows more than he's letting on! (I don't buy the "it doesn't work that way" nonsense.)

Dogen couldn't have been on the island for very long if his son is the same age as Jack's son David in the FS in 2004. I wonder how Jacob brought him there? Was it by sub before Locke blew it up? Was he on Oceanic 815?

Ben talking about Napoleon and how the loss of his power was so devastating to him was quite fitting when you consider how important power was to Ben on the island and how he felt about being exiled/losing his power.
Locke in the FS seems to have the same confidence as Flocke. Could there be more to the word substitute than origianly thought? Does MIB take the real John Locke's place in the FS? The way he persuades Ben to go after the job as principal kinda sounded like Flocke convincing his recruits to go after what they want.
Lostit...perhaps there is more to the "substitute" than meets the eye, but my thought is that Locke in the FS has accepted his present condition, and is at peace with himself. This gives him a confidence that most people don't have, and i think that is what we are seeing here, not MIB in the FS. Confident people inspire confidence in others.

Just some quick thoughts:
Ben teaches about Napoleon on Elba island and how he wanted to keep his power. On our island there is a power struggle.
Ben's FS also has Alex in the middle of things. Alex's last name is Rousseau...so I gather Danielle is still around. It is nice to see Dr. Linus as a caring teacher, but he is still lusting for power (although to make things better). However, he does seem to know right from wrong and when Alex is in the cross hairs, chooses the right way to go. He must of somehow still blackmailed the Principal enough to keep his History Club.
Dr. Artz is still a no-it-all!
Didn't know that Miles could read Jacob's ashes. Thought he needed a body.
Interesting that Dharma was still a real thing in the FS and that Ben and Roger were there and left.
So Ilana protects the candidates...not doing a great job, is she? So there are only six left that she knows of...doesn't realize yet that Sayid is claimed.
I think we got enough of Richard's story. It does seem that he originally came on the Black Rock since he says he hasn't been back on it in years. And Jacob's touch gave him a "gift". What gift did Jacob's touch give our Losties? Richard calls Jacob's touch a curse.
Flocke offers Ben power (you can be in charge of the island when we leave). But Ben has finally learned that the island isn't the most important thing anymore. Alex taught him that, and Jacob didn't even care about her. So now we have a "nice" Ben.
The scene at the end with Jack, Hurley, Richard meeting up with the others on the beach was reminiscent of when Jin, Sawyer and Michael came back with the Tailies.
Widmore in the sub! Guess he's the one Jacob was talking about.

I wonder how Alex and Danielle got off the island? Maybe they were never there? I guess Alex wouldn't have been born yet when everyone evacuated for the incident (which I assume is when Ben and his father left the island in the FS).
But then again, Danielle was a French scientist. How did she get to the States and why isn't she earning enough money as a scientist to pay the rent? (Alex said her mother was working two jobs).

Michael Emerson did such a great job, had me all teary eyed...pls give him another Emmy. That FS was beautiful. Wonder what Flocke is gonna do when he learns Ben has gone back to Ilana's camp. Me thinky he's not going to be too happy. And it scared me to death when the ticka ticka sound came around while Ben was grave digging and then all of sudden Flocke was standing right behind him...I jumped. I'm a scardy cat.
Maybe Ben and Juliet will be together in the FS. He can bake her another ham and she can bring the rolls....:)
So now that the candidates are touched are they all not gonna age now like Richard? cool- I think?

I don't know who to root for...I just keep thinking all is not what it seems. The idea that Richard took orders from MIB, thinking he was Jacob (like Amy Lynn and JT were saying) really would blow my mind! Richard did seem to know who he was talking to though when Flocke came out of the statue, so you'd think he'd recognize the real Jacob...but who knows?
Ok ya'll don't start singing "Thanks for the memories" just yet. We still have a couple of months left. I have enough things to cry about after that episode, don't make me think about saying goodbye yet!
What Flocke tells Ben sounds counter to what he told Sawyer. He told Sawyer that the island is just and island and doesn't need protecting. He told Ben that after he and his group leave someone needs to be in charge of the island. (I think this is why I thought FS Locke sounded like Flocke when he was telling Ben that he should be in charge of the school) Why would someone need to be in charge if it's just an island that doesn't need protecting?
I think this is a prime example of how MIB is using whatever people want as bait/temptation in order to recruit them.

Yes, and I've always thought that he feels 'stuck' in this time 'gift' that he got from Jacob. I think he's the perfect example of 'be careful what you wish for' and who wants to live forever anyway? Lostit... Thanks, I see now what you mean with those lyrics. I'm not so sure love is represented by Jacob or not, but I think love (even of oneself) will be the key to the end of Lost. At least I hope so!

I don't know, but it sounds more like he made a 'deal' with Richard, kind of like MIB was talking about making deals. To me, both Jacob and MIB are manipulators. It's up to them to find the truth inside themselves

I think it's great and a big thing that needs to be resolved for Lost. I want to see Ben and Widmore end up on the same side and after tonight, I don't think it's impossible anymore.

True maybe Richard made a deal, but he definitely made it clear that Jacob gave him a "gift" when he touched Richard and we know who he touched of our Losties...so they had to receive whatever the "gift" was too. So then, what was the "gift"? I agree that both MIB and Jacob are manipulators. We just don't have the whole story yet.
I realize that Widmore needs to come to the island and that it will be good for the story...I just don't want any more of my fav Losties to get hurt! ;)
I'm starting to lean towards Widmore being on the "good" side and that he and Ben are actually on the same side despite their own personal rivalry for control of the island. And with Ben opting to stay on the beach after Ilana's wonderful offer of compassion towards him instead of taking Flocke up on his promise of power makes me think that he will put aside his conflict with Widmore for the greater good. I don't think power and control are his goals anymore.
Both Jacob and MIB are making deals. I suppose you can say how Richard said it was a 'gift', but bottom line, the deal was there.. that he would be included in Jacob's grand plan, but he never really knew what that plan was. So now Richard has lost hope because Jacob is dead, but Richard should quit looking outside himself for 'gifts' and 'plans'. And for all he knows, the plan is being played out right before his eyes.
I agree with you, Lostit, and not only are Widmore and Ben going to finally find out that they are more on the same side than not, we'll also find out the same is true of Jacob and MIB. The two just show different approaches to things and it's not really so much about 'good' or 'bad' as much as it is about perspectives.
I think Flocke's offer to Ben to look after the island was simply playing on what Flocke thought Ben wanted... and I think Ben thought he wanted it too, till he Ilana put her gun down.
I also found it interesting how Ben and Roger talked about the island... it was like they didn't know that it was under water. It's probably not important, but it stood out to me... like they have no connection at all with another in Dharma. And when we were first shown the island underwater I had wondered if Ben would even be in the FS. If the island was underwater for so long that Dharma never set up there, then there was a good chance that Horace would not have come driving along as Ben's mum was in labour etc etc.
The beach reunion also reminded me of when Jack, Kate and Sawyer returned to the camp with Juliet. Only this time the outside was already at the beach (Ben).
