The Sub - I don't think it's totally fake. The Others used it to get to the sailboat back in The Glass Ballerina. I don't think it's used to arrive on the Island or leave it though.

Here's Ben from TMFT:
Most of them were recruited and brought here and as much as they love this place...as much as they would do anything to defend it...they need to know they can leave if they want to. The sub maintains that illusion.

Then Locke says So you're lying to them. and Ben says No., but I don't know what if anything Ben says to believe.

Dennis said...

Maybe the sub that Locke blew up was a fake, but their real sub, the Galaga, is hidden somewhere else.

Here's a point I'm not sure has been made yet: When Ben says that the sub "maintains the illusion" that the others can "go home if they want to", I think the "illusion" he'd referring to is that thye think it's up to them when they leave. Ben really has the power to keep them there forever, but the others think they stay because they choose to. As long as the sub is there people can pretend that they have the power to leave at any time.

Ya think?

I think I'm done until there are some more pictures available. I can't make out some of the objects, especially the ones towards the top.

memphish said...

Amused2behere, I definitely think there is some amount of that though Ben has out and out refused to let Juliet leave multiple times. I'm with The Goog as to there being some sort of star gate, portal, etc.

I stopped listening to the podcast as soon as you said that this was easily the top third episode of the season. I haven't watched it yet and didn't think it was anything big. I'm gonna wait now until I see it. Thanks for the heads up!

maven said...

Just listened to the podcast. I just want to put in my 2 cents re the Lost Official magazine. I picked up the recent issue and was hugely disappointed that I spent $7 for something that really had very little content. I had beautiful pics, but the articles were pretty lame. Yeah, it was cool that the blast door map was in there, but it's really nothing I haven't seen on various sites. I guess fans who don't access the web a lot would think it's telling them some good stuff. I felt ripped off, but I really only am basing this on one issue, so maybe I'm wrong?

maven said...

Furthermore...regarding the sub being real or not. I don't think it's real in the sense that it is capable of taking people on and off the island for long trips. It might be functional enough to go from the main island to others (a la Alcatraz). That would contribute to the sub being an illusion that Others can leave the island. Juliet might have been brought in the sub for the final leg of her journey to maintain that illusion that she came in a sub, therefore she can leave in a sub.

Brianne said...

Maven, I agree with you. The sub maintains the illusion that they can leave because the sub is there and that's how they think they got there. The illusion can be maintained because that is what they believe will take them back home, when in reality, that's not how they get there

Hello all! I haven't been on since Thursday evening, and just now caught up with all the comments since then. Ded, I love what you're doing with the clay models of sybmolic items! I had fun trying to figure out what everything was.

In response to all the talk about Danielle...

I was toying around with the idea that she is DHARMA. As a theory for what may have happened, maybe during a "war" between The Others and DHARMA, be it The Purge, The Incident, or whatever it may have been, maybe The Others released some sort of virus, a "sickness" if you will, into the DHARMA population. Whether The Others were naturally immune to this, or innoculated themselves, I think Danielle's crew may have gotten said disease, and in order to protect herself, she killed them.

I was looking at the transcript for Season 1, Episode 9: "Solitary," and what Danielle says is so confusing. Perhaps instead of a disease, she was talking about Smokey. I cannot tell. I just want to know what's up with this chick!

And one last thing... I don't know if this have ever been brought up before, but as far as I can remember, Smokey has never attacked anyone when they were alone. Can anyone confirm/deny this? It might not be important, just something interesting I noticed.

Happy LOST Day LoCos!

This morning's Doc Jensen is up. It does contain spoilers about tonight's episode and dense theories about philosophy. I scanned it, but won't give it much more thought until after tonight.

Lostit, why do I need to look for the cow? We found the cows and Locke blew them up (or near them up). Was that Monty Python too? I'm under-versed when it comes to Monty Python and my Alabama-raised ears have a hard time following the old TV shows. "It's just a flesh wound," is the most quoted line in our household.

Yes. It's from "The Holy Grail".

When King Arthur visits the french castle, they taunt him and tell him to go away. Then one of the french guards says "Fetchez la vache!", and they catapult a cow over the wall at Arthur.

My podcast thoughts...

Very well done as usual and well worth the listen. iTunes commenters are jerks.

< SPOILER DELETED >

Juliet fits in! She didn't three months into her visit, but now she is marked as one of them and has finally joined the flock.

Alpert can not leave any more than any one else can. He used to be able to leave. They all could, but since the Purpling, no one gets off the island. This is why Ben was letting Jack go, because he would have done what Desmond did and then came back. However, this might not be true because that might have been what happened before the Purpling.

Podcast guys,
You guys were obviously hit hard by the weather and didn't have time to read the blog. We were all over the symbol, and there is more to it than just what you mentioned in the PC.
My take in it is simple. I think it is the Male version of the mark. We saw Juliet get the females version.

If Rachel is a Shim (She/Him) And her baby is her own where did the egg come from. It's Juliet's of course. Juliet is a mother as well which is why she got hysterical in front of the monitor. It wasn't just her sister, but her sister and her Sister/Brothers creepy incest child... EWWWWWWWWWW

Well thats it for now.
C-ya later or tonight.

Happy LOST day all. Going to lurk until the show.

Calrton & Damon said in the weeks podacast that something "fairly momentus" and "major" will happen in this weeks epi and for once the abc promo's can be believed. I am confused as hell becuase I don't see anything in the previews that seem to be shocking or major. Wonder what it is? Ideas?

Also mentioned in the podcast, the LOST video game for XBOX and PS3 should be out by summer. Maybe this is how we are supposed to keep busy this summer if there is no ARG.

See you all in a while.

Good morning Locos. Was thinking about something... when Claire goes to the psychic, does he push her to put the child up for adoption or does he insist that she raise the child herself? I can't remember. I think I recall him later telling Eko he was a fake.

I guess what I'm getting at is if he told her to put the child up for adoption, and that's why she was on the plane, maybe he has some connection to the others.

I don't know, I'm just wondering if there is more of a connection there or not.

engineer27 said...

He first tells her that she has to raise the child herself or something really terrible is going to happen.

Then, when he has her eating out of his hand, he springs part 2 on her ... that the only other option is to take the child to this couple in LA that he found (presumably using his psychic insights).

Of course, it was all a scam and he was planning to get her to deliver the child to this couple all along.

The question of whether this guy was in on some conspiracy to get all of our losties on flight 815 is something up for debate. Although, David and Steve address the question on their Podcast (the current one, ep 20) and dismiss it as being too improbable.

ib4uc said...

diggity... I looked on DarkUFO and viewed the promos for tonight's episode. Yeah, I see a few things but since they are promos, they might be considered spoilers -- they might not have aired yet? I don't recall it being the same preview as I saw last week after the episode aired.

Comment on the Official Lost Podcast::

DL and CC just finished the script for this season's finale, which is on in 6 weeks. Does that mean that they are going to shoot, edit, and polish two hours (well, really 74 minutes) of high quality TV in only 6 weeks?

Yow!

ib4uc said...

engineer27... thanks. I guess that's all the more reason to listen to the podcast today.

Dennis said...

Sorry, Ded. I didn't see what you were talking in the US promo, and I didn't hear anything about it in the TLC podcast. I listened to everything, except for the spoilers.

I'm trying very hard to avoid spoilers since there are only 5 shocking episodes left until the cataclysmic season finale!

engineer27 said... Of course, it was all a scam and he was planning to get her to deliver the child to this couple all along.

I see it differently. Some couple wants a baby, so they are going to go through some elaborate plot involving a psychic to get it from chick in Australia?

Here is the quote from "Raised by Another"

MALKIN: It is crucial that you, yourself, raise this child.
CLAIRE: You mean with Thomas? Is he..
MALKIN: The father of this child will play no part in it's life, nor yours.
CLAIRE: So what exactly are you saying?
MALKIN: This child parented by anyone else, anyone other than you -- danger surrounds this baby. . .
CLAIRE: Danger?
MALKIN: Your nature, your spirit, your goodness, must be an influence in the development of this child.
CLAIRE: If Thomas and I don't get back together I'm putting this baby up for adoption. I just wanted to find out what would give the baby the happiest life.
MALKIN: There is no happy life -- not for this child, not without you.
CLAIRE: I don't. . .
MALKIN: It can't be another. You mustn't allow another to raise your baby.

He met Eko before he met Claire. He believed he was a fake, unitl he saw the "flashes" before his eyes about Claire and her baby. That's why he freaked out and initially told her to go away.

The reason he faked the adoption, was that he knew the plane was going to crash, and that she would survive, so he thought that would insure she would would raise the child herself.

engineer27 said...

Dennis said... The reason he faked the adoption, was that he knew the plane was going to crash, and that she would survive, so he thought that would insure she would would raise the child herself.

That means that there is no couple in LA waiting for Claire. I doubt we'll ever see this confirmed in the show.

Are you of the opinion that Malkin is a time-traveller like Desmond and Ms. Hawking?

I love the podcasts. One note I want to make about it. When you were semi-quoting Jack telling Juliet that he wouldn't be able to protect her and that she will be on her own, I think that the importance here is her answer because she replies that she is already on her own. Another words, I think the bottom line is that she does want off the island no matter who she double crosses.

Just my thoughts. :)

Capcom said...

Nice avatar Amused! :-)

Ya know, now that we are more aquainted with Jules and how she got fooled into living the rest of her life on the island, the nerve of those Others to have a kangaroo trial and plan to sentence her to death! Geez! Unless the trial was a ruse to make Ben look like the good guy and save her life so then she would be even further inebted to him. Ya never know with this guy!

Ewwwwwwwwww, good thinking on the Juliet/Rachel-Inbred-Zombie-Child! I was surprised by Juliet's reaction as well, but I figured that perhaps Rachel and the child are the only family that she has left.

Dennis, that's what I got out of what the psychic said to Claire lastly, as well. He surprised himself by actually seeing her future (somewhat like the fake psychic finally having something legit happening in the movie Ghost). So he sent her on this "trip" on the plane that he foresaw crashing on the island, so Aaron would not be raised or influenced by anyone (at least during his formative years) other than Claire.

Capcom said...

One Python quote I would like to see on Lost is if someone gets asked a lot of questions (which would never happen on Lost tho!), and the interrogatee says, "I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition!".....and, well, you know what's next. :o)

memphish said...

How do you think the psychic got the airline ticket he gave Claire? It's hard to believe a psychic would shell out $1000 or so for an airline ticket. Do you think it's possible Christian gave it to him? Or Aunt Lindsey?

What if Christian somehow found out Claire was pregnant and paid the psychic to try to talk her into keeping the baby, his grandchild. Then when that failed he wanted her to go to Los Angeles where he'd have been I know you don't want to know me, but I can help you raise the child.

Now why he'd have spent 4 days getting hammered if that was his plan, I don't know, but if the psychic is a fake, why would have bothered with Claire all those months and why would he have stopped the reading in the first place? Maybe both Christian and Aunt Lindsey were in contact with the psychic and he was waiting to see which would be the highest bidder.

If he isn't a fake, I guess he may have just told Eko that to get him off his case.

Capcom said...

Good thoughts about someone else wanting Claire on the plane/island Memphish.

I really got the impression though that the psychic was a fake, and then he got that really surpised look on his face when he got the true vision of her future and that's why he freaked out, because it might have been the first authentic vision that he ever had in his fake psychic career. And then changed his mind about her keeping Aaron.

Now whether or not The Island, or some other kind of force interference, allowed him to see the baby's future is up for grabs with me. I have no explanitory thoughts for that part.

Capcom said...

Bigdog, my thought too! Either TPTB thru that in to make us laugh or to be cute....or they put those lines in as a clue.

I think Desmond "dreamed" Ms. Hawkins, and I think his "flashes" are just premonitions.

no, the problem with THAT storyline is the fact that there were TWO men (Jin and Sayid) within 5 feet of each other 200 yards from the boat and facing the same direction (backs to the boat). that whole "plan" never has set well with me. Mmmm.... Desmond.... :)

Darkaardvark said...

So chucklez, you think that Richard Alpert, Ethan Rom (et al.) came to the island after working off-island but have never been back-and-forth since?

And how are they getting to the island? By plane? I could buy that... maybe. They definitely have planes. And I think everyone's been waiting for a landing-strip reveal since Season 1.

I'm not convinced that it's impossible physically to leave the island, just that:

1. There's no way of doing it without special instructions from Ben. (The exact compass direction given to Michael).

2. Ben is never going to give that, nor the means to leave the island, to anyone unless he has to.

I believe that Michael and Walt did "escape" the island in some sense of the word. They're not wandering around a "snowglobe", as Desmond described it, or they'd have been back long before now. Yes, I know that the actors left, but they wouldn't have if it was written for them to return a la Desmond in Season 3.

So, have they literally returned to humanity? I'm not positive. But I think they've gone somewhere.

Capcom said...

Hey, you're right EF! :o)

Yes Chucklez, and I hope that we don't have to wait until Season 4 to see the rest of the statue! But we probably will, there's too much going on now that needs to be wrapped up and revealed and cliff-hangered. :-(

Yeah I agree Cap, but if they really do do (snicker) a Dharma-centric episode, you would have people on the island finding stuff with flashbacks to either a seprate type story or flashbacks specific to what they are discovering and there could be a lot revealed in an episode like that.

Also, I find it very amuuuuuuzing that when Rachel says to bring her back in one piece, Alpert responds with a snicker..."We'll Try."

And that when Jack says the Juliet is under his protection she shoots a look up like ooooohhhhh re you gonna get it later.... lol

All this talk about the sub still has me thinking that it is only used for short hauls and when it's needed to go back and forth to the Hydra station (for example). It is there to give everyone not fully committed to being there the illusion of control to leave the island. That's why Juliet woke up in the sub...she thinks the sub brought her to island and it could have taken her off the island. But I think it only takes someone to a point (maybe another island where there is a landing strip).

Great avi, Ded! And am soooo looking forward to tonight's epi! Desmond, yea! LOL

Okay, I'm testing out a new avi in honor of tonight.

Watching last week's episode... Sawyer's so perky. I think he really likes this leader thing. Too bad Jack and to come back and ruin it.

I agree about the sub that we see, being for short trips. Or for tricking people like Jules into thinking that that's how she got there and how she will leave.

Yuk, I get the creeps thinking about any woman being out cold, when Ethan is around, and in small spaces as well. :-p

P.S. Nice avi Melissa!

Evening LoCos. Less than 30 minutes to go for those of us in the right (directionally and not necessarily any other sense) half of the States. Of course, it's already aired in Canada. See you on the next thread. I like your new avi. Melissa_Lossa.
