THE BRIG - SEASON 3, EPISODE 19

Tonight we should get some insight into Locke's time with the Others and maybe some clues about how Anthony Cooper ended up on the island. It also looks like Sawyer will be tempted when Locke approaches him with some serious dirty work. The promo teases that "loyalties are tested" and "alliances are broken" as survivors begin to process the presence of the mysterious parachutist and her insights on the fate of Oceanic Flight 815.

Top Ten!

Ange: Here's exactly what DocArtz said: "Lost will VERY LIKELY change its timeslot next year!"

Ange said...

OMG way to announce the new post Thrash! Okay two things:
1. Love no WV
2. When is the new time slot? I am with Dennis, and just can't get spoiled this close by snooping all around.

Dennis said...

Happy Birthday To Everyone!

It is the one year anniversary of The Lost Experience!

To celebrate, we have turned off WV!

WooHoo!!

Dennis said...

Ange said... When is the new time slot?

How about 1:05 am, right after Jimmy Kimmel? Then they wont have to worry about any competition at that time slot.

Ange said...

HA Dennis! Okay....N-O...ten is almost too late for me! Although for Lost I would totally stay up. Sheesh remember DJ Dan at like 3 AM.

Capcom said...

A champagne toast to all of our new friends here at TLC (formerly TLEC of course) on this awesome anniversary!!!!! I have learned so much from you all, and have found the best links to all things Lost here as well. Not to mention, so many confusing things about the show have been cleared up for me, by all of YOU. CLINK! :-) XO

And an extra clink for the admins!

It's too bad that we can't all be in the same living room together watching tonight's ep on this auspicious occasion, but at least we are together online.

thinbluemime said...

WV ? West Virginia has been turned off?

thinbluemime said...

Hey that pic on the front page is from tonights episode? What do you think Locke is doing? Counting his fingers? And did he go back in time to the Civil War? See the conferderate encampment at the bottom of the hill?

Dennis said...

Also, don't forget to check out the program that I wrote - TLC Helper

I designed it to make adding bold, italics, and links to your comments easier.

Not only did I write the program, but I'm also a user!

It our anniversary, not Christmas ;)

Locke is definitely performing a reality test:

Yep, 5 fingers.

Our Canadian friends are almost finished viewing tonights episode of Lost (Show airs at 8pm vs 10 pm USA)

I wonder if it is as good as TPTB have hyped it?

Tess315 said...

Cheers!! Capcom and all.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Good evening, TLC!!

I hope tonight's episode lives up to the hype - I'm really looking forward to it!

And I'm with capcom - wouldn't it be great if we could all watch an episode together? Someone should plan a party for the series finale. You can all come over to my house. :)

Speculation re Locke:

1. He did indeed use The Box to go back to the Civil War just as I was forced to listen to as my son read Civil War on Sunday. Hopefully Locke will learn as Jack and Annie did to Be cheerful; lessen sorrow and give hope; be brave; put aside your own feelings; don't give up. Reading that again, I hope those are indeed the things Locke learns.

2. The Others are a band of Civil War Renacters as featured in Confederates in the Attic which is a great book. Tony Horwitz is a very good writer.

3. Having already lost his ability to walk and speak in past episodes, hear Locke regains his sight and is amazed by his own palm.

Hopefully it is none of these. Less than an hour to go in the Central time zone. Yeah!

memphish said...

"hear" in 3 should be "here" obviously. I should regain my sight like Locke.

Scoutpost said...

Happy TLE Anniversary everyone! Ah the memories. DJ Dan at 3am! Now that was one time the west coast had the advantage over the east coasters- never since.

thinbluemime said...And did he go back in time to the Civil War? See the conferderate encampment at the bottom of the hill?

So are you saying Locke is with the North or the South?! That is the true mystery.

Dennis- going to download and try the helper in a bit. Hopefully I can give it a go after tonite's episode.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Ha, ha - I actually stayed up for most of that DJ Dan, here in the East. My husband thought I was nuts!

Melissa_Lossa said...

Anybody notice that little twitch of a smile when Hurley says that he thought Locke killed Patchy with the fence? Patchy looks slightly amused at the idea.

Tess315 said...

Me too. melissa_lossa. That's back when I was just a "pearler" here.
My daughter wanted to know what I was doing when she got up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. She was alot of help piecing together Rachel Blake's video.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I "pearled" for quite a while before I worked up the nerve to post here. Now I can't stop! :)

Capcom said...

Watching last week's ep tonight, we are again reminded of how much Patchy is in need of getting to a dentist! Does Bea kiss that mouth? :o) Good make-up.

Thanks for that link Memphish, I like those qualities that you posted, I keep a logbook thingy (I refuse to call it a journal!) of good inspirational quotes that I find to keep me going when things get tough. I will be adding those to it. :-)

thinbluemime said...

Will we hear Locke say in his finest southern draw, "Frankly my Dear, I dont't give a darn?"

Amused2bHere said...

LOL let's not start the North vs South debate again...of course if Locke wants to be on the winning side we know which one that will be...

Less than an hour to go here in Yankeeland. (Let's Go Mets!)

And they said the time slot change would be next season, and that the 10pm slot let them get away with stuff they couldn't do earlier, like Sawyer and Kate getting to "second base". So I don't know if they will welcome the change or not.

But they also said that the network heads have discovered that more people are Tivo'ing and recording the show, and that something has to be done to compensate in the ratings for that. Hey! Haven't we been saying that all along!!! More proof they listen to us.

almost showtime! Happy Anniversary TLC. And thanks to Admin and Dennis the Great for no more WVs!

DiggityDirge said...

what's up fellow LOST addicts. Very excited about tonights epi. Today's Doc Jensen has made me think this could be the best epi of the season....I have some predictions, but since Doc said it should be spoiler free, I digress. Can't wait to see how badly the "eternal con" Locke has been mislead, again.

Anyway, as always looking forward to the chatter afterwords.

DiggityDirge said...

WOW....no wv's. What is this world coming too?? Not sure if it is a mistake or intentional by the admins, but I'm gonna lean towards intentional.

Nice job admins!!

Amused2bHere said...

Diggity, don't you mean "eternally conned" ?

I guess that makes Locke the "perennial mark".

"Born sucker", a la PT Barnum?

If Sawyer only knew, he'd come up with a few good ones for Locke.

Amused2bHere said...

Yeah, Diggity, Admin turned them off at Dennis' suggestion. They will be monitoring the blog for spam, and unless there is a bunch they will keep the wv off.

DiggityDirge said...

Amused2bHere said...
Diggity, don't you mean "eternally conned" ?

Yes Amused....we are defiently on the same page.

Just read the comments. Happy TLE anniversary everyone. Man those were some good times. What is someone to do this summer without a LOST ARG to kill time? I guess my work productivity is going to way up. My employer should be happy.

Melissa_Lossa said...

Watching this scene again, I think Sun's mostly worried about her father finding out about Jin's parents. If she just concerned about Jin finding out, why not have daddy "take care" of Jin's mother? Jin would never know.

Also, in the scene with Naomi - she seems to say "I am not alone" directly to Patchy. She's looking right at him.

memphish said...

Capcom, to supplement the sourcing of that advice it was a list made by Clara Barton for her Civil War nurses of how to do their job.

Being from Tustin, CA, I guess Locke would be a Yankee since there were no surfer dudes (that I know of) in the 1860s. Of course, I'm not sure there are any surfer dudes in Tustin now either. Tustin's pretty inland for LA though it does have an In-n-Out Burger as I recall. Yummmmmm!

maven said...

Wishing all a very Happy TLE Anniversary! I started out very hesitant and naive and just got sucked in! LOL It's the best thing I ever did...
Looking forward to tonight's ep! Hopefully, as usual, someone will be around when I get back on...:)

CattyGirl said...

Happy anniversary! Very excited about tonight's episode too. I am unspoiled minus abc promos. Can't wait!

CattyGirl said...

...and not WV is such a relief.

Capcom said...

Tx Memphish, that makes it all the more meaningful, I did a report on Clara Barton when I was in 3rd grade, I think.

I grew up out West, so I have no affiliations or leanings for either side of the Civil War/War of Northern Agression. Cowboys don't care about all that, so maybe Locke doesn't either. :o)

But as for surfer dudes, the ancient islanders were surfing in Hawaii on wooden lonnnnng boards! But I don't think that the sport had migrated to CA yet by then either.

Joseph Finchum said...

You know I wore the shirt I made for TLEC today and didn't even think about it. That is just too damn spooky for me... lol

Amused,
From last comment of last post... I guess you are right we do often use the same wording.

Amused2bHere said...

I've been thinking of what to do this summer during the long hiatus.

Maybe a Lost Book Club? We could read a book a week (month, whatever) that has been suggested by Lost and discuss it. I've not read The Third Policeman, for example.

Or we could all rent the same movies that are linked to Lost and watch them, and then on Wednesday night instead of Lost we could have a discussion of said movie. (I wonder if Netflix would run out of said movie if we all tried to rent the same on the same week. Wouldn't that be funny!)

Amused2bHere said...

gotta go! Lost Time!

Melissa_Lossa said...

amused - I really like the idea of a Lost book club (and how appropriate that we would have our own book club!). We could read Carrie, Third Policeman, Watership Down, Wrinkle in Time.... I might skip Stephen Hawking's book, though. ;)

Melissa_Lossa said...

Just about that time - see you in an hour!

Joseph Finchum said...

I just had another one of my off the cuff ideas.

After seeing the scene of juliet talking into the tape recorder, it struck for just the briefest of a glimmer in my eye.

What if Jack and Locke are in cahoots (sp?) ala Ben and Juliet. What if Locke is an inside man?

gotta go.

Anonymous said...

"don't you know where we are".

hmmm.........indeed...........

Scoutpost said...

Book club would be fun. So would the movie club- actually I really would like to see if we could have an effect on Netflix- that would be cool! (yes I'm a nerd)

Ok, I'll be back many hours from now (3 to be exact). Have fun all ya'll east coasters (said in my best Texan drawl).

Darkaardvark said...

Okay, so the opening was Locke with Cooper tied up with him.

Then we see 8 days back where Locke met him dad.

Cut to present where Locke sees Sawyer.

So the opening scene takes place...sometime in between those two? Sorry, kinda confused.

This episode is going to rock, though.

Darkaardvark said...

They mentioned Locke's explosion tour! They even said tour!

Tess315 said...

who said it was Ben?
Is he telling the truth?

Darkaardvark said...

Sorry to triple post, but:

Either Locke's lying about Ben, or I'm really really stupid. But I swear it sounded like Cooper in the opening scene.

it may not be purgatory exactly, but it's seems to be something to that effect.

Darkaardvark said...

ded: ....and if 3 days after the fourth day of the third sunday from now is 6 days after the day before the last day of the beginning of the third day......

Frankly, I'm convinced it's not a literal Purgatory but there are definitely biblical and Purgatory-like overtones to the show's themes of redemption and damnation.

Anonymous said...

sayid's girl: god can't see purgatory??? just a curious thought actually.

side note: "bug eye....." heehee

Darkaardvark said...

"Ben said even God couldn't see where they were. Did Patchy crash the chopper?"

I thought Ben said "God can't see us any better than He can see the rest of the world" or something to that effect. There's a difference in meaning there.

Anonymous said...

aardvark: i know. and i hold onto that theory. whether it's literal or something close to it.

and hey......it also had a "children of the corn" feel, too.

Tess315 said...

Sorry it wasn't an exact quote. That's what I thought he meant. That even God couldn't see where they were. Naomi said coordinate were in the middle of the ocean.
The chopper's instrument went hay wire and crashed. I thought maybe Patchy did something to bring it down. That's why he was running to the flare.

and i said it was a test. not that the ultimate decision was right or wrong. heck, we don't know if eko even made the right one when he faced his "demon".

just that his decision resulted in his "leaving the island".

Seems to be a lot of "thank-yous" revolving about Locke. Patchy said it to John when he shoved him through the fence.

So, what do Jack and Juliet need to tell Kate?

Ange said...

Sweet baby Jane, that episode rocked my socks! I am feeling overwhelmed and frustrated as usual, but it was some good! Jack sucks, that is all...and Locke's daddy-o looks heavy. Night night kids.

Melissa: Maybe that you can communicate off of the island.

memphish said...

Sorry for the absence. For some reason Hubby sat up and watched it. I won't go there.

If someone does not slap Jack Shephard I will teleport through the TV and do it!

Ange said...

CAN'T, I meant can't communicate off of the island! Bedtime!

Anonymous said...

ange: exactly. cuz they're not alive perhaps.....hmmm.....

Capcom said...

Wow, that was disturbing! That whole Locke/Sawyer/Cooper thing was very creepy. And Cooper was one sick and psycho SOB. :-(

Was Richard playing the "good cop" with Locke?

memphish said...

So Cooper arrived on Island post whatever date the search was called off but we don't know if that was pre or post Purpling. I'm thinking again that the Others have a giant room of Daddies that are going to be revealed one by one for the next 15 episodes until we're done.

Previews for next week look great!

Flashes from promo:

Sign: "NAMASTE! The Dharma Initiative" at the sub dock

A flash of a ghostly figure in white that goes by so fast I can't catch it.

A HOUSE.

Some sort of a wooden arrowhead with eyes and a nose and mouth drawn on

Roger Work Man

A shot of DHARMA vans, the kind that Roger drove

The Others wearing gas masks

Marvin Candle on the island with others in the background (others, not Others)

A group of DHARMA crates with workmen

That was possibly the most densely packed promo ever. Man. There's totally just a house out there somewhere.

Capcom said...

And the nerve of Jack expecting Kate and everyone to keep him in the loop, and he won't tell kate something!!! He's back to full-on d*ckhead mode. Sorry for the bad French.

Is the thing that they won't tell her, that the radio won't work on the island?

Anonymous said...

and alpert has been on the island since he arrived. again.......check out the avatar. when you "arrive".....that's it.

hmmm.........unless......unless (if it's purgatory) and there are a couple of angels and demons roaming around to try to ummmm......"recruit" for their side by getting the losties to choose either salvation or damnation.

okay, i really need to lay off the medicine.

memphish said...

When Kate left Sawyer's tent it reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer and his girlfriend decide it's much more comfortable to sleep in separate beds afterward. Kate's on-going "love the one you're with" policy is really annoying me. She's seriously jerking with both of them now.

I'll try to avoid shipper stuff now.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I'm thinking Richard is in the anti-Ben camp. He's actually been a pretty nice guy.

I'm also thinking that Richard and his eye-liner are our gay character. He even had the man purse tonight!

Ange said...

chucklez: I can not believe you said Powerpuff Girls. Blossom is my favorite and the Devil in drag seems apt. If Lost's HIM shows up in tights I am never watching TV again!

Capcom said...

Yeah, but Ben had the man-purse too, with the bunny! :o)

memphish said...

Melissa_lossa, I agree about the gay characters. Man Purse. LOL.

So is Cindy a pre-Island Other. She certainly is highly indoctrinated. And no Alex and no Karl, but Ben traveled like he was George Washington set up for 4 long months at Valley Forge or something. Dressers, bookcases, books. I'd hate to be the Other that had to carry that stuff.

Melissa_Lossa said...

oh, true, capcom! :)

Also, it was interesting that Rousseau showed up at the Black Rock. Wonder where she's headed with that dynamite.

Anonymous said...

ange: i know right?

nah. i'm thinking that maybe it's similar however. the "him" refers to the one they "serve". but alpert may be an angel (of sorts) there to kinda' feed losties with thoughts of how to BEAT the others and ultimately achieve salvation.

eh.

Amused2bHere said...

ok, so what a rocking episode!

Is Cooper really dead? Looks that way, I don't think he'll resurrect a la Patchy.

Kate can't keep a secret? Huh?

Jack is keeping secrets with Juliet? Huh?

The John Locke Explosion tour! rotflol Another shout out to US!

Darkaardvark said...

One more flash to add from the promo: A baby. Baby Ben, maybe? It could just be Aaron though.

Ange said...

Memphish: I though the same thing about the dresser. WHO even travels like that. Okay REALLY off to bed now.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I thought the same thing about Ben and his library. Yikes!

I wonder if Cindy was already one of them, or if she had to do a show of free will - same goes for those kids.

Capcom said...

Question: do we think that it was Sayid's plan for Kate to tell Jack the "secret" to set him and Jules up, or was she just pulling a "nanny-booboo, I know something you don't know!" thing?

memphish said...

What if Cindy's show of free will was taking out the communications on the plane!?!?

Joseph Finchum said...

On the Channel 7 news they just had a piece about a con man named Russo ( everything can be linked to Lost... lol

Chucklez,
You suck, I nearly lost it when I read that.

Preview of next week::::: j/k

Sayid: "Oh boy here Comes Jack."
Jack: "What is going on here?"
Hirley: "Dude! You had it coming."
Jack: " Oh so this is how it goes down huh? You just conspire behind my back and it all comes out at tribal council."
Juliet: "Besides I have been here for three years and I found the hidden imunity idol."
Kate: "Ooooo, I didn't see that one coming."

Anyway. I knew James would go through with it, because I knew A.C. would be his delightful self. I would have done it to in that situation.... maybe. Who knows?

Melissa_Lossa said...

I don't know what Sayid's plan could be, but I also find it hard to believe that he would tell her and NOT expect her to run off and tell Jack.

Anonymous said...

capcom: yes. that's the first thing i thought of.

memphish said...

Capcom, I think Kate's acting on her own and without much thought as usual. Has she even wondered where Sawyer might be?

Unknown said...

Huh. Interesting. Thoughts:

-Technically speaking, Hell isn't Purgatory.

-Why did Rousseau want the dynamite?

-Is Cooper all-the-way-dead, or just mostly dead?

-Is Naomi lying about the relative invisibility of the Island? We always trust Sayid.

-How meaningful is the alleged location of the FOUND wreckage? Bali?? (and I capitalize FOUND as I would LOST, for reasons of balance)

-And obviously, what piece of information do Jack and Juliet share?

Anonymous said...

ded: wait.....which comment had you dying?

Amused2bHere said...

Chucklez, it can't be purgatory, TPTB said it wasn't. Unless they lied (what are the chances of that!), it has to be something else.

Limbo is the vestibule of Hell, according to Dante's Inferno. It is not purgatory, so if any of LOST relates to Hell or Limbo then (like Ben) they will not have lied to us.

Was Cooper right?

ew. Hope not.

And as for carrying Cooper's body on his back, I think all Ben wants is proof that the guy is dead. Why not just bring his head? Much lighter, I would think.

Anonymous said...

ummm........who said hell was purgatory? i didn't. i stick with purgatory.

Capcom said...

Yeah, Memphish, the dresser and the books in a tent. A little bit "Out of Africa" there. Or, I half expected Ava Gardner and Clarke Gable to walk in from a safari! Well, I guess I would miss my books for a week out in the woods too.

Melissa_Lossa said...

I think Cooper is definitely dead. He has one thing that Patchy didn't - a dead, heavy body.

Unknown said...

I'm liking my theory about "Ben" more and more. He's not who he says he is. He wasn't born on the Island. He's not a leader. His name isn't even "Ben." And now, the next facet of my theory: he killed his own father on the Island, too.

Anyone wanna guess what I think "Ben"'s real name is? (I don't think this has been proposed here to date, but I could be wrong)

Anonymous said...

again.....do any of us believe that if we had the answer, TPTB would ACKNOWLEDGE IT??

eh. and again.....if it's not, it's something damn close.

memphish said...

TBP, good point about it being Hell, but can you die and move on from Hell? I guess it could be some sort of reincarnation thing.

That was a lot of dynamite Rousseau took. That was a great exchange. I'm assuming Rousseau is going to blow the h*** out of wherever Ben is headed next.

If Cooper is only mostly dead, that's going to make carrying him even more awkward.

Naomi said the clouds cleared and she saw the Island. Makes me think of Atlas Shrugged or maybe Lost Horizon and how people found those hidden places.

Melissa_Lossa said...

how many books can one guy read in a week? load up the saddle bags on the wheelchair and call it good, buddy!

Ange said...

Seriously, I need to stop, now I am going to bed with images of Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo in drag burned into my brain. They ain't no Eddie Izzard those two.

Thought about the wreckage: They saw bodies with cameras. NOT in real flesh. Could they have been watching a video of bodies under the sea?

Darkaardvark said...

Not to be the squeaky wheel here, but if anyone wants screenshots of the flashes from the promo, tell me which one and I'll give it a shot (though I bet you they'll have it on DarkUFO soon enough). I've got it recorded on the computer, which is why I can keep going over it...not to be a broken record here! I just thought that some of the stuff in the promo was really, really cool.

What do we all think of Locke? Good? Bad? Just doing his own thing? What's he willing to do to get the answers he wants? And will it satisfy him? He's been looking for the answers to the island's mysteries since season one. Kinda like the Lost fans. Has he set his expectations so high that he will be disappointed?

It has happened repeatedly before to John. "Here's your sign, John" as Boone throws heroin at the grow, and "All roads lead here, John?" as Jack is held at gunpoint by Desmond.

Unknown said...

One more: how did Locke get the tape recorder from Ben? Is Locke still being played? Is he a willing conspirator in an effort to draw all the Losties out? Or did he actually manage to steal it?

memphish said...

TBP, I'm assuming you're thinking Ben's name is Jacob. Not Henry, not Ben, but Bad Twin Jacob, the grasping one, the one who cons people out of their birthright and their blessing. Is that what you think his name might be?

Anonymous said...

purgatory is like a "holding" area. a "void" in a sense. the waiting room before you go to see the doc.....before the diagnosis of peril or relief. that's what i'm referring to. and dante's inferno i've used many times for references, but it doesn't have to be exactly like THAT purgatory. i'm thinking more along what i just said actually. eh.

Unknown said...

Nope, memphish. It's a name we've seen before, and we thought we saw the person to whom that name belonged.

memphish said...

Good point DAA, whose side is Locke on? We've already got one who walks among us, but is not one of us. Do we really need 2 of those?

aardvark - I'd love to see some of that promo again, but I can wait until tomorrow. I'm off to bed soon!

My stupid DVR didn't record the show tonight, so I can't watch it over again myself.

memphish said...

Allright TBP, you're making my head hurt. Do you mean he's really Henry Gale from Wayzata, MN, just not that one?

Joseph Finchum said...

Chuck,
The one with all the this day that day references.

I think Danielle has gotten tired of making pokey death traps. She knows the Others are on the move and wants to make Boom Boom traps. Tee Heee

Anonymous said...

memphish: that was something i said. i think maybe that smokey comes around when it's time for someone to choose. and from that point, they proceed to hell or heaven. in a sense.

Melissa_Lossa said...

TBP - are you thinking Radzinsky?

memphish said...

Good point Chucklez. Sorry if it seems I stole it. I quickly scanned the 50+ posts before I got back on. I blame hubby, but then he's used to that.

Anonymous said...

ded: hahahahaha.....yeah. forgot about that one. hahaha.

Capcom said...

Does anyone wonder why it never occured to Sawyer at ANY step of his trip with Locke that he was being conned? Even with the recorder and all that? Is this the new Sawyer? Or did TPTB just write something for Sawyer that was rather out of character?

Amused2bHere said...

Does anyone know what they call the place souls go between incarnations?

I don't know that much about religions that include reincarnation, but if this is related to that, then maybe this is where they are.

And did anyone else catch the "Where are we?" line tonight? lol

Anonymous said...

no big memphish. you and i have shared similar thoughts many times. no big. nice to know you're still holding that door open as well.

;)

Darkaardvark said...

I think Sawyer *knew* he was being conned, but didn't care.

memphish said...

Did everyone notice how A Coop aka the real Sawyer also used nicknames like our Sawyer. He called Ben Bug Eyes and Locke Bald-headed Bastard. And how funny was it that they showed Sawyer's bare feet. Were Locke's bare too? Someone was distracting me.

Unknown said...

Tee hee! I'm glad it's not easy to guess.

He's Roger.

memphish said...

Ben is Roger Workman?!? TBP you must elaborate.

Amused2bHere said...

If Ben and Co. are the "good guys", then are they the enlightened ones who help the dead work out their "issues" to determine their "purpose"?

Capcom said...

Like, maybe in denial for some reason Aardvark?

purgatory definition:

1. (in the belief of Roman Catholics and others) a condition or place in which the souls of those dying penitent are purified from venial sins, or undergo the temporal punishment that, after the guilt of mortal sin has been remitted, still remains to be endured by the sinner.

Darkaardvark said...

Oh, and addressing the "If we had it right [about Purgatory] would TPTB acknowledge it?"

Of course they're not going to say "Oops, yeah, you got it. Enjoy the rest of the show." They're going to say things like "Hmm. I don't know about that." or "That's an interesting theory." or "I wonder how that would work."

They don't outright shoot down every single theory that gets to them. If they did, it'd be a simple matter of finding out which theory they hedge on.

Theory A: "Nope, not true"
Theory B: "Nope, not true"
Theory C: "Nope, not true"
Theory D: "Uhm... I couldn't say."

So when they do shoot something down, it's because they don't want us to waste our times thinking something that would leave us disappointed. Like, for example, the theory that the Smoke Monster exploded the engine in the Pilot, when it was really just a graphics error.

Amused2bHere said...

Capcom, maybe more like I know I'm being conned, but I'm too curious to know why, especially coming from Locke

Anonymous said...

more relevant purgatory info:

3. any condition or place of temporary punishment, suffering, expiation, or the like.
–adjective
4. serving to cleanse, purify, or expiate.

Interesting parallel between John and Ben. When Ben needs people dead he manipulates other people to do the dirty work and so does John. They both believe that they have no "blood on their hands" and that their "cause is just.
God forbid anything interfere with John's so called journey

Amused2bHere said...

How quickly would we lynch Carlton and Damon if it turned out to be purgatory? After they denied it so vehemently?

Tar and feathers would only be a start...

Melissa_Lossa said...

I just wikied reincarnation, and I didn't see any kind of name for the in-between place. I've always just known it as a form of limbo.

memphish said...

This summer I speculated in some really sad just for me fan fiction that the Others purpose was indeed to help those who landed on their Island work through their issues. But that wasn't where TPTB took it. No Ben just had a spinal tumor.

What kind of Sci Fi thing is there with a life sucking force? Once walking Locke showed up, Ben got tingly. (I'll skip the joke.) Ben is clearly whatever that life sucking thing would be. Help me Sci Fi people.

Capcom said...

After watching the way Ben acted tonight, I feel icky. He was too evil to be respected anymore tonight, what a horrible thing to make someone kill. Blech. I think that he should move to Florida with O.J. in the condos for sociopaths.

Anonymous said...

graphics error??? hahahaha!!! you buy that? how convenient that the ONLY "graphics error" admitted to by them was a coincidental moment in time where a black "thing" swoops down at the EXACT moment an engine blows up.

and not simply behind someone while they're picking up sticks or something.

come on.

call me "conspiracy brotha", but i'm not listening to "TPTB".

T.P.T.B. = The People That Bullsh#t

The Penuels said...

After watching that episode, I literally have heart burn. I'm off to do some deep breathing exercises to calm down and then get some rest. Be back in the morning to read what everyone has to say...

Capcom said...

Aardvark, those are EXACTLY the kinds of things that TPTB say in the QandA section of the Lost magazine! LOL!

Melissa_Lossa said...

I found it especially creepy that Ben wanted everyone, including the kids, to watch.

Joseph Finchum said...

Amused,
I will get the Tar, my uncle does roofs... you work on the feathers... lol

memphish said...

It seems like from Eyeliner Guy's speech that there is something about this Island way beyond what we've seen. He says the fertility project--which is THE thing we've seen him involved in--was a diversion (or something like that). Is EG opposed to Ben?

Capcom said...

Exactly, Martysbaybay. Two creepy peas in the same pod. :-p

Darkaardvark said...

You do certainly seem to be the one with conspiracy theories! Not that I'm complaining. They make us think. As for it being the "only" error, you notice that light flash by Hurley's head in Catch-22? Sun flare, but it didn't stop fans from making theories about it.

http://www.freewebs.com/darkaardvark/Lost1.jpg

There's the woman from the promo. Is that Juliet? Karen DeGroot?

Anonymous said...

ded: the thing is, i really never WANTED it to be a purgatory thing, but sheesh. the "overtones" or whatever are overwhelming in some cases.

oh and i have two feather pillows.

hahaha

Melissa_Lossa said...

Okay, it's time for bed for this girl. Good night, everyone - I'll talk to you in the morning!

Ange said...

Okay what if Danielle was not there to get dynamite, but was checking the situation out. I still think she is totally the one running the show or is tied tightly with the Others. Was there and explosion in the previews?

Bad Twin...maybe Ben can't walk, but his super evil, making kids watch death, twin can (although I am never on board with the twin thing)? Getting tingly?

memphish: EG seems opposed to the project in general.

Think about the connection set up by the name "Henry Gale." Don't go by the movie of Wizard of Oz. Go by the book.

The Wizard was in fact an ordinary man who came to Oz and found a way to assume authority that was not his.

Listen to Ben speak when he tells Locke that he has to kill his own father in order to become something special on the Island. Listen to the passion in his voice. It almost quivers.

Look at the connection set up by the name "Linus." A son of Apollo in Greek mythology (in fact, one of three sons according to the great and powerful Wikipedia). All tales of Linus end in his death, one at the hands of his father.

The connection set up by the name "Benjamin" also ends in a less-than-ringing endorsement by a father.

I think Ben, aka Roger, was a peon. A disregarded son. A janitor.

I think he found a way to be powerful on the Island, and killed his own father. I think that he put his work clothes on his father's body and sent it down the hill in the DHARMA van.

I think he assumed power in a cowardly way, and has managed to cow the rest of his society into believing his power. I think this could have been done by disavowing DHARMA, by opposing them and claiming a higher authority.

This is a really long post. Ben is Roger. That's my theory.

memphish said...

Telling Locke he must sacrifice his father in front of everyone to be "good" to be "extremely special" is very strange. How is this good unless A Coop isn't really A Coop. And won't the Island or Ben know that Locke still wussed out. I feel so sorry for Sawyer.

Anonymous said...

aardvark: didn't notice it, but it hardly looks like the other thing (in the sense that you can kinda' tell it's a "fopa"). the swooping black flying carpet was waaaayyy different. hahahaha.

Amused2bHere said...

Hmmm...so Locke doesn't have "murder in his heart" like Kate did.

Or Sawyer.

Or Anna Lucia. Or was she just trained to kill, being a cop?

Sayid has soldier training, so he can kill. We assume he has killed, eh?

But Locke has lots of reasons (justifiable homicide?) or provocation, and he can't?

Maybe it's just me, but I would probably have killed Cooper in front of the camp that night. It wouldn't have been pretty, it wouldn't have been clean, but it would have been done.

memphish said...

TBP, I like it! Who's in Roger's jumpsuit now?

Anonymous said...

book police: your last line.....hahahaha. love the summation there. hahaha.

memphish said...

Amused2behere, Sayid killed his commanding officer to help Nadia escape.

As for Locke, shouldn't it still be the case that he thinks he killed Patchy? Though he couldn't kill Eddie and he couldn't kill his dad. He's killed some pigs on the Island.

Anonymous said...

A2BH: he couldn't participate in the act of murder cuz if he did, it would've been an act of his own. maybe he feels that if someone else does it, he can get his "redemption" through the acts of another. and still use that as a way to save the rest somehow.

eh.

Unknown said...

memphish - Daddy.

Capcom said...

I feel sorry for Sawyer too Memphish.

So, how does Smokey's critical eye feel about how Ben forces people to kill someone in front of everyone?! Ben better stay out of Smokey's way. Ugh, that was just so damm creepy, I really can't get over it.

Anonymous said...

but killing pigs isn't murder. it's feeding people. justifiable.

martysbaybay said...

capcom

like the new and improved avitar.

John may think that he is on his own journey but don't you kinda think that Ben is, shall we say, his travel agent?

Amused2bHere said...

Memphish, yeah Sayid killed but I was talking about the Murder in his Heart thing that Kate's stepdad said to her.

A soldier is trained to kill, like police and other protectors. I don't think that's necessarily murder in thier hearts stuff.

Joseph Finchum said...

TBP,
That is a damn good theory and in this show you can always go back somewhere and go
"Wow, they set that up a while ago!"
With all the references you listed it is very plausible.

Anonymous said...

exactly amused2bhere. otherwise, i'd need more help than i thought.

memphish said...

Yes, amused2behere but that was a selfish killing. Like Kate, Sayid killed for love whether it was justified or not. It certainly wasn't militarily or government sanctioned.
