Looking forward to the podcast. Singing?
As for The Third Policeman I don't think we have to get too hung up on it. Somewhere on the internet (or maybe its even on the S2 DVD commentaries) Damon and Carlton admitted they've never read it and stuck it in there as a red herring. I think the main 3 things about 3rdP are: 1. The end which is like something else we've already read (hope that doesn't spoil anyone.) 2. The potential Jacob connections with the 3rd policeman and 3. The Omnium
I had a hard time when I read it this time last year.
If anyone runs across The Lost Book Club from the Season 3 DVDs be sure and post it here. Maybe that will help.
Yay! One of my favorite all time books
A belated Happy Birthday Ange.
May all you Birthday wishes come true.
Melissa_Lossa, get well soon.
Off to listen to podcast.
Melissa_Lossa - Thanks :)
Sorry about your arm too! I can't even straighten my right knee today (but that is mostly because I need to quit running!) However, I have a plan for us.......we shall chop off arms and legs and get TIN ones. YAY!
I am going to start TTP today. I am a little anxious to see what it is like after reading all of these posts! Ange is scaring me.
HELLOOOO Kinetic! :)
Bicycle Jess...that will be your picture for the day if you start reading TTP...well if I can find one:D.
Thank-you takes a village!
Kinetic! So good to see you popped in here! Hello!
TTP is very confusing in the beginning and gets slightly less confusing towards the middle and end!
This next podcast should be very interesting.
Hi Maven, Ange and Jess :D I've been an ebul ebul lurker :(
Ange-OMG ROFL!!! Giggle.
FYI: On DarkUFO there was this review of "The Third Policeman". It might help some people get more out of the book.
Maven-Thanks, I'll check it out once I have read it. :)
Hey, everyone - Thanks again for the nice comments and the well wishes. :)
Here's the "official" list of questions from our Alice podcast:
Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass Discussion
1) Alice’s descent down the rabbit hole resembles the Losties first descent into the Swan hatch. She crawls down a little ways (as Kate is lowered down) and then drops off (as Kate is dropped). Alice is following the white rabbit. What is Kate after?
2) Much of the trouble that Alice gets into in Wonderland is due to her own recklessness. She eats and drinks things without knowing what they are, she walks into strange houses, and she gets into arguments with people for no reason. Does this same pattern apply to the Losties? (perhaps to the Losties more than the Tailies)
3) Is Locke Alice? Does he see the island as a kind of Wonderland and/or Looking Glass World that he is free to explore at his whim?
4) The Queen of Hearts often orders death sentences, which are never carried out. She manipulates everyone around her into living in fear. Is this similar to the way that Ben rules? We know that he is capable of murder (The Purge), but that he avoids it when possible (Jin, Bernard and Sayid on the beach). Is he more about the fear than the action?
5) Much of the story of Through the Looking Glass is based on a giant chess game. However, the pieces hardly ever see each other, let alone come into conflict. Is this the way that Ben planned to play his game, with as little interaction with the Losties as possible (however, still able to take pieces when he needs them)?
6) Although Alice in Wonderland never actually appears in Lost, it is referenced several times, most notably in the episodes White Rabbit and Through the Looking Glass. The White Rabbit in the episode is Christian Shepherd, who leads Jack first to near death and then to save haven and water in the caves. The Looking Glass is an underwater hatch that leads to the outside world. Both references include tunnels/caves/passageways much like the rabbit hole and the looking glass that Alice passes through. Are these possible points on the island that lead to either other worlds or other understandings that the Losties must reach?
I don't know if I see character relations from Alice to Lost as much as I see whole concepts.
Melissa brought up the hatch / rabbit hole.
Since TTLG is basically a full game of chess ( with Alice oblivious to the rules of chess, so of course she makes some interesting moves as a pawn ) ... this could be representative of the Losties being played like chess pieces.
Another huge concept was, of course , change. But not just change for the better... Alice has her literal ups and downs ( large and small ) and the Losties are still going through those up and down changes. Alice's big dream was to be a proper young lady.
Depending on her situation it was not proper to be a big girl in a small house, and it wouldn't of been proper to be large while trying to talk to a 3 inch caterpillar. Her changes, although perceived as good or bad, were really just being the right size at the right time.
At first read, Wonderland seems like a very silly place and full of nonsense. But if you go back and really think about some of the dialogs, they were VERY logical. But the real world isnt always so.
Even our language is a bit silly... we don't get on a plane..we get IN a plane... we dont take the bus... the bus TAKES us.
But since it's what we are used to, and live quite well in our nonsense reality...dialogs that are real logical arguments seem silly.
So that's another concept carried over to Lost. This island just doesnt make sense... the Losties cannot cope with this...to them it HAS to make sense. But it never will. Even when all of the mysteries are revealed to the Losties, they will STILL scratch their head and try to turn it into something that makes sense to them.
Perhaps if they learn to just accept what it really is.. "all just a pack of cards" ... then they can be masters.
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone. "It means just what I choose it to mean - neither more or less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all."
Sounds silly but again, its one of the most logical things said in the books. Just because you don't understand me, doesn't mean I don't mean what I'm saying. I am master of the words coming out of my mouth... I can choose to connect whatever meaning I wish to them. The second you start telling yourself... "you must use the utmost proper grammar!"... is the day language ceases to evolve.
On an end note... on the island the stars were backwards. Just like in TTLG things tended to be a bit backwards or mirrored.
Just finished listening to the podcast. Great job one and all!
Sorry to have missed it. My little guy had to be fetched early from school due to a playground head injury. He's ok, he took the brunt of a head to head collision with another boy, but it's a black eye and bump on the cheek, nothing worse. Needless to say I was a bit distracted yesterday afternoon.
Sounds like you all had great fun. As usual, Passafist, Melissa and Maven were insightful and entertaining. And even Jess with her technical difficulties was a welcome voice (although it reminded me of Jacob, there but not quite all the way!)
My 2cents on Alice: I understand that "White Rabbit" was so named because Jack had to follow his Dad's image to find the caves with the fresh water, possible shelter, just like Alice had to follow the White Rabbit to get to Wonderland. As Passafist said he was just a plot device, not a principal player. But I still don't get the name of the Looking Glass Station. In what way was that underwater station a portal to the outside world? It couldn't be communication, they had the Flame Station for that. Maybe it was like Ellis Island, the first stop on the way in. But Juliet wasn't awake for the stop, if that's the case. There's more than meets the eye on this one, and I don't think we know enough from Lost to answer this yet.
I was just thinking today... does anyone know whatever happened to Dark Angel?
amused - hope your little guy is feeling better! Ouch! As far as the looking glass goes, I think we still need a bit more info on it before we can make a determination on what it could represent.
luckyguy - good question! Last I remember, Dark Angel was having some issues at work (didn't he get busted for chatting on here too much?). I thought he was going to try to come back, but he never did.
Re The Looking Glass:
Well, I'm sure TPTB didn't just name this hatch The Looking Glass for no reason! Alluding to the book, "Through the Looking Glass", Alice enters a world that is so different from what's on her side of the glass in the parlor. Just like our Losties, Alice encounters things she's never experienced in her life and she wants to go home and the normalcy that brings.
A looking glass is a mirror. One looks in the mirror and sees a reverse image of themselves...maybe even another side of themselves. Could the Losties have fallen out of the sky onto an island that has another side of themselves? A place where they can "see" themselves surviving and reacting to strange things as they find a way home.
I agree with Melissa_lossa that we just don't have enough information about the Looking Glass station. But getting named that tends to get us thinking that it might be the way on and off the island. I can see a "sub" diving through the glassy water of the ocean (like a looking glass), processing in the station and coming out on the pier. And vice versa.
i like that chess anologie kinetic with regards to pawns making odd moves on the island
maven - I like the idea of the Losties finding another side of themselves on the island. We've already seen that with several characters, mainly dead ones - Ana Lucia, Shannon, Boone. We've also seen it quite a bit in Locke. I really like David's comment in the podcast about how in Alice's dreams, she is smarter than everyone else, almost everyone wants to be her friend and she even becomes a queen. That's sort of how I see Locke - he's always wanted to be this leader, a real adventure guy, and now he has the chance.
FYI: Robin Weigart (Juliet's sister, Rachel) plays Lt. Karen Davis on NBC's "Life". Probably another character we won't see more of on LOST ala Richard Alpert!
BTW: I think "Life" is a pretty good show. Good police show and great "quirky" characters.
Going a little off topic... did anyone see this video of Danny Bonaduce bodyslamming Johnny Fairplay?
Ouch, and double ouch!
I'm through most of the podcast and wanted to add a couple of things.
This made me think of Dharma as well. Ben talks about how DI couldn't even get along with the natives, kind of like Alice. In fact their projects were designed to be intrusive with respect to sticking their noses into the Island and its properties and possibly its natives.
4) The Queen of Hearts often orders death sentences, which are never carried out. She manipulates everyone around her into living in fear.
Everyone around the Queen of Hearts lives under a more or less constant death sentence. This reminds me of several exchanges our LOSTies have had about already dying and already being dead. With the threat of death being somewhat unreal given their "deaths" in the plane crash, should they like Mrs. Klugh not be fearful of dying on Island?
As for the Looking Glass and the discussion about The Looking Glass Station being a portal to LG Island, 2 things.
1. I think it's key to remember that Dharma built the station. Let's say for example that in Alice's world, her living room and LGL both exist but they only connect when her looking glass is present. I don't think the same can be said about the Island because we've seen so many times that people DON'T need the Looking Glass Station to arrive on the Island. But maybe this goes to the their all dead thing. Mabye unless you connect our world and the Island via TLG you can't travel between the two. We've certainly seen that you can't sail anywhere you wish and reconnect with the real world. Heading 325? Hopefully we'll see soon what happens then.
Which leads to 2. The people who inhabit Looking Glass Land are all chess pieces. There aren't any interlopers except Alice who used TLG to get there. Our LOSTies, Danielle, Desmond, the real Henry Gale, they are all essentially interlopers in the looking glass world of the Island. It's like you were playing chess and all of a sudden you dumped a second set of players on the board. I don't know exactly where to go with this. It just stood out to me that in LGL no one was out of place whereas on LOST none of the castaways are willing participants in the game.
Great podcast guys.
In many of the "books" so far, an individual or group find themselves in a strange and very different place;far from home.
Throughout their journeys they encounter many strange things, and places.Along the way, self discovery is also made.
Trying to get back,is like trying to wake up from a bad dream.
Alice knows where her home(THLG) is, but still can't quite get to the door.

Like the Fool's Journey in the major arcana.

Ya, Alice nor the Losties, obey the rules of the game. They "cheat".
and of course in chess a well played pawn can become a queen...
that melissa comment was mine i have no clue how my wifes name got there instead of 2costa, she claims not to have a blogger account
takes a village said: In many of the "books" so far, an individual or group find themselves in a strange and very different place;far from home."
Also, these characters and most of our Losties are just trying to get home. "There's no place like home, there's no place like home."
Hey Dennis, Are you a member of the Goat Justice League?
Memphish: LOL!
Hi All! If anyone is ambitious enough (Memphish? You like challenges!) Lost.com has a thing going where people can help make Lost crossword puzzles. Not sure how that works when the plan is already drawn up but the first one is done. There are also a couple of simple jigsaw puzzles.
http://www.lostcrossword.com/
Something to do when there's nothing Lost to do. :-)
Thanks, Capcom. The first puzzle was easy, but I got stuck on the second one. Very interesting!
I'm sure Memphish (or you, or many of us for that matter) could make one just as entertaining.
Amused: Is that a challenge? LOL
FYI: Doc Jensen has a small piece in this week's EW:
THE ULTIMATE FACE-OFF
It's Lost vs. Heroes in the battle of the out-of-control beards
What's the hot new look in 2007 for the depressed catastrophe-survivor-about-town? The mangy beard. Following Jack Bauer's busy (and quickly shorn) lead on 24, Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) sported a gone-to-pot Paul Bunyan in May's Lost season finale, and now so does Heroes' brother-grieving, ditched husband Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar). Cheek to cheek, Nathan's unkept Beard of Woe seems the real deal, as opposed to Jack's pelt-and-spirit-gum drama-club assemblage, and scores points for sexiness: Judging from the disfigured reflection Nathan caught in the mirror, his chin rug may be hiding something, and the ladies love mystery...hairy, hairy, mystery. While Jack's flash-forward scruff has a Jesus-ness that befits his savior complex, such biblical haggardness clearly ain't suave enough to seal the deal on a late-night airport booty call with Kate. Petrelli wins this chin-up contest by a very long hair.
Heheh, that's funny about the beards Maven. And did anyone notice how Peter came back with major muscle buffage after he blew up? I hardly recognized him. He's not that squirelly punk from Gilmore Girls anymore. :-)
Yeah, I was thinking too that someone here could make up some good puzzles for us!
I'll check out that crossword thing, but I don't have much free time this week. But with over 3 months until LOST I'll see what I can do.
I've never been that good at crossword construction. Search-a-word, now that's a horse of a different color!
Scruffy beards of doom, eh? Everyone has a different capacity for growing a beard, I wonder if each actor actually grew one if they'd both come in as nice. Hmm, I'm not sure that made sense, but you know what I mean? One man's week's growth can be another man's three months worth!
Pasdar's is nicer, though. Could it be that the meticulous Nathan is grooming his out of temperment, while Jack just doesn't care anymore about personal hygiene?
Good Morning everyone! Hope your weekends were more productive than mine. :)
Well, but at least I finished TTP. I really liked it! Some of the middle was hard to get through. However, Maven was right, the latter part and the end are better. There are a bunch of Lost similarities though. I kept having to get up last night and jot down notes that kept coming to me. LOL I think it will make for a good discussion. Can't wait for the next podcast.
That beard story is great. :)
maven, don't read this - 24 spoiler for last season ahead:
Jack Bauer's beard was born of a couple of years in a Chinese prison, and came with some nasty back scars and an acid burn. There's a man who's EARNED his beard. Jack Shepherd's got nothing on that!
Ange-
I was looking through some lost avatars, look what I found LOL
Jess: PINK! Also, you've inspired me...I'll finish TTP today.
Hmmm maybe at the gym. People look at me funny when I ride the bike with my book, highlighter, and pencil. Maybe I need to carve a box that fits in another box that fits in another box to hold all my Lost Community Book Club stuff.
A little OT, I finished The Thief of Always per Chucklez rec. It was excellent and very quick. Also, it has huge amounts of concepts that could tie in and explain lots of things on our favorite show. For sure a good, quick, and fun extra credit!
Ange says... People look at me funny when I ride the bike
Jess is very sure that Ange stands against the wall, leaning on her elbow......
Melissa_lossa: Thanks for the 24 spoiler! The only season we haven't seen yet is the 5th one! So I knew about the Chinese prison and Jack Bauer's beard! LOL
Yes, gang, I think we'll have a great discussion when we do "The Third Policeman" podcast!
If anyone's interested there's more pics of my granddaughter on my blog:
Maven's granddaughter.
Oh my gosh, maven - pure cuteness! I hope she sleeps as well the rest of the time as she does during picture time. :)
What a sweetie!
BTW: It's Martysbaybay's birthday today! Happy Birthday wherever you are!
Thanks, Melissa_lossa! She always seems to be sleeping when we visit. Of course, her parents love those moments! LOL
Maven- She is adorable!!! I didn't realize you had that blog. Hehehe, I LOVE baby toes!
Happy Birthday Martysbaby!
Great pics Maven.
Happy Birthday Martysbaby!!
Yes TTP was an unusual read. Should make for a good podcast.
Maven your grandbaby is adorable.
If anyone's into the spoiler game, there are some tantalizing bits over at spoilerfix right now. :)
You have been warned!
Apparently the spoilers are starting to mount out there. There are websites I definitely have to avoid from her on in.
Happy Birthday Martysbaby.
Grandma Maven: She's precious.
There will be those times when she will let everyone know that she is someone to be reckoned with. Thanks for sharing with us.
Some rumblings at DarkUFO that Lost may be returning to Wednesdays after all.
Yikes, I'm getting weak about spoilers. Must...stay...strong...like...Memphish!
I don't care if I know what actor will be playing what character, but I sure don't want to know if someone is going to die, get injured, shoot someone, go time traveling, what Locke is going to blow up next, or who the incoming guys are with.
Happy B-day Martysbaybay! <|:o)
Spoilers! Ugh! They're popping up everywhere (but here!)! There's less and less sites to check out lately, because you never know what someone will say in the comments (except here!)!
Thanks for all the nice words about my pics! You've got to indulge a new Grandma! LOL
Many thanks one and all for your well wishes.
Maven.....
From one Grandma to another she is just beautiful!
Ditto Maven on the baby pics! I forgot to say that.
Heheh, over on the A&E MadMen blog they are all complaining about having to wait over a year for season 2 to start. Weenies. :o) If they only knew what Lostophiles have had to endure every season!
For those like me who can't wait until the Season3 DVD comes out, there are some goodies posted on DarkUFO in their DVD section from our friends in Brazil who are able to buy the DVD, like, right now. :-(
http://dvdlost.blogspot.com/
Included are deleted scenes. Very juicy.
Also some Youtube entries for "I Do" commentary, and Evi extras. Haven't watched these yet.
http://www.youtube.com/user/cla01
I don't know if this is interesting, an oversight, or me just being bored....
Did anyone notice that they use the white rabbit for the Looking Glass logo, yet the White Rabbit isn't in TTLG
For those of you who watch Heroes:
Wasn't the last scene when they pulled back from the shack that Syler was in to reveal the shack in the middle of nowhere in a jungle VERY similar to the pullback to reveal where Otherville was in Epi 1 of S3?
^^^
That's a pretty run-on sentence, isn't it? LOL
There's a new Doc Jensen up. Nothing too spoilery!
I'd say nothing spoilery at all. The closest Doc gets to a spoiler is telling you where to get spoilers.
For sure Maven, on that camera pullback. So, just what is supposed to have happend there? Did this superchick really underestimate Sylar on her own, or did her PTBs use her as an expendable agent, and put them both in the middle of nowhere in case Sylar got tricky as usual?
Thanks for the link, maven. I like Doc's theory about Ben on the last page. Interesting take.
Here's another kudos to LOST:
The Human Rights First organization has nominated the show for "excellence in realistically portraying torture or interrogation". The episode "Enter 77" was nominated along with "The Closer", "Boston Legal", "Criminal Minds" and "The Shield". The winner will be announced Oct. 15th.
re: Heroes
I agree, Capcom and Maven, that the pullback reveal was very reminiscent of S3's New Otherton reveal. Copycats! (flattery...)
But here's a question:
If "the Company" is who is holding Sylar, then why would they let a metamorph be his prisoner, unless they were deliberately suppressing his powers? Would they take the chance that he would spontaneously recover and then absorb her power of shape shifting (or telepathically making people see what she wanted them to...I'm not sure which way it went). THAT would be a very scary power for Sylar to acquire.
Here's my take on S2 of Heroes. The people running things have no clue what's going on and don't feel they need to resort to any form of logic in their story-telling. They've resorted to soap opera type plot twists such as amnesia and teenage angst; they're repeating powers; there were so few consequences to the "explosive" season finale it makes me want to scream; it's been 3 weeks and they still haven't gotten any of their plots moving; having to read Hiro telling Ando what I watched last week is really not a good use of my time. So, I'm not going to watch the next few episodes, but stockpile them on the DVR in the hopes things improve. I realize that I'm holding them to a high standard, but I want twists and aha moments and all I'm getting is "saw that coming from a mile away" and "hmmm that might be interesting" moments that so far have failed to pay off.
I just want to say that my Lost countdown is based on a premiere date of Feb 4, which is a Monday.
I know it's possibly changed back to Wed, which would add two days, but I'd rather be optimistic and use the 2/4 date until it's set in stone for the 6th. Lost.com's counter uses the 2/6 date, fyi.
Only 117 more days to LOST!
I agree Amused and Memphish.
Putting someone like Sylar with her was dumbdumbdumb.
It also seems to me like TPTB are going in circles; it seemed that some parts of the Peter scenes were inconsistent; and I felt like I had missed a coulpe episodes in between the S1 finale and the S2 episode 1, as in, what the heck happened when they exploded in the sky and now they are miraculously back and OK and everyone has new lives? Sheesh. Maybe it is supposed to be like the Gilmore Girls between season where they keep going to Europe on the break, and they just leave and then are back. :-p
I agree with you all about Heroes making no sense sometimes! Claire and West -- yuck! Hiro's storyline -- getting to be predictable and boring and repetitious! Sylar, being the ultimate power guy, stuck with a shape-changer only? But, with all that said, I'll still watch for purely entertainment value and no deep thought (that's saved for LOST! LOL).
FYI: Michelle Rodriquez got sentenced to 180 days in jail. Wonder how many days she'll actually serve!
Using the Nicole Richie sentence vs. service ratio it would be about 3 hours wouldn't it? JK. It should be a while. Keifer Sutherland too.
This season of Heroes picks up three months after the big boom of S1's finale. I guess what happened in between is either to be revealed or they think it's self-explanatory.
Darlton and Cuselof better pick up Lost right at Jack's phone call! None of this "three months later" nonsense!
The Company didn't have anyone whose power was less dangerous to guard Sylar? How about someone whose power is to type really fast. Or to grow really pretty flowers. Or be a wizard at card games.
Oh well, at least Sylar didn't eat her brain, so maybe he didn't acquire her power.
I agree with Maven, Heroes is a nice escape, just "purely entertainment value and no deep thought (that's saved for LOST! LOL)."
For those of you who watched Early Edition, Fisher Stevens has just been cast as the guy that Jack talked to on the satellite phone at the end of last season's finale. Very cool. :)
There's some more details at tvguide.com.
BTW, I would be interested in knowing how Chucklez feels about all these other shows, on other networks, referencing Lost so much on their programs. Not so crazy of an idea now, is it? Heheh. Of course this has really been happening on TV for decades.
no more casting spoiler alerts???
Happy weekend kids. I've been TLC MIA these days and I hate it! I am certain school is going to give me a nervous breakdown before January. When I get home all I have energy left for is blinking and breathing.
I am trying to do a bullet post for TTP. I decided when all was said and done I did like the book, but I'm having a really hard time with connecting the ideas. I have some ideas I really want to link to the show but I am not doing well with sorting them out and making them take form in the actual post.
Melissa: Is there a list of questions yet for the book? And does anyone know what day the discussion is planned for? The last Wednesday of October is Halloween...just saying.
Hi Everybody! I was wondering if there is any idea when the next podcast will be.
2costa, I was just thinking the same thing...
I saw who was cast as Scotty and Sulu in the next Star Trek movie on the ticker on E! channel, along with the info re: Fisher Stevens. Of course I read it Parker Stevens and got all excited...
It's getting harder and harder to avoid spoilers!
The current casting info. was in my local paper today with a headline announcing the role. I think TV writers like us mere fans are aching for some LOST. Here's an article in Variety that indicates as much. No spoilers and it mentions the mobisodes, though no start date for them.
Hi all. If you haven't checked Jorge's blog for a while, you might want to go over and give him a word of cheer. His blog yesterday sounds kind of down, and maybe he needs some positive reinforcement from fans and friends. He gives so much laughter and cheer to us, it was kinda sad to read his last post. Not that he won't bounce back soon as the cheerful and positive guy that he seems to be, but, you know what I'm trying to say. :-)
http://dispatchesfromtheisland.blogspot.com/
Hey, all:
Capcom: I posted on Jorge's blog to urge him to keep blogging!
Melissa_lossa and David: Any idea about The Third Policeman podcast.
Ange: Can't wait for your Bullet Points!
Casting spoilers seem okay to me. They really don't give away too much of anything story-wise.
I tracked down links to the Washington Post folks who are doing a book club. Doc Jensen mentioned them in his latest post. You can find all their stuff here.
So far they've read Watership Down, Wizard of Oz, Watchmen and this month they're reading Turn of the Screw. Transcripts of their discussions are available on line, so if you've got some free time you might want to check them out.
This comes from the Washington Post's Lost Book Club discussion of Watership Down. I'm reposting it here in the hopes of getting some discussion going this week. It's really intriguing.
Liz Kelly: One thing I wanted to mention is toward the end of the book. The chapter following Hazel and his gang's victory over Woundwort is preceded by this passage, from Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey".
Professing myself, moreover, convinced that the General's unjust interference, so far from being really injurious to their felicity, was perhaps rather conducive to it, by improving their knowledge of each other, and adding strength to their attachment, I leave it to be settled by whomsoever it may concern ... "
Of course, we're meant to draw the conclusion that what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger and that Hazel, Bigwig, Fiver, Clover, Bluebell and the rest are actually beneficiaries because of Woundwart's interference in their lives. Is there a lesson here for "Lost?" I'm not sure, but thought it was worth a mention.
Jen Chaney: That's a great question. To take that a step further, does that mean, if Ben is a Woundwort of sorts, that the Losties will ultimately owe him for teaching them an important lesson about their lives? If the season finale is any indication, Jack should have listened to Ben. At least, based on what we know, it appears that way. Speaking of all those literary references that precede each chapter, I couldn't help but notice that the very last literary reference in "Watership Down," prior to the Epilogue, is from "Through the Looking Glass." Kind of gives me the chills. The quote: "He was part of my dream, of course -- but then, I was part of his dream, too." Start rehashing the theory that the island is all just a dream ... NOW!
I don't remember paying any attention to these references when I read the book. I may have to go back and take a look. The idea about Ben is fascinating to me and I'd really like it if that's where things might be heading.
Well Memphish, this is all very true about surviving life, and what the ill-intentioned people in your life can throw at you when you are just trying to get on with life and survive.
But rather than thanking the SOBs who tried to knock you down on occassion, I'd rather thank the Lord for helping me learn from the experience and using the advantage to my better end, a-la Joseph telling his brothers that the evil that they meant for him, God meant for good.
Not to be preachy, it's just what came to mind when I read your interesting comments. :-)
I didn't read Watership Down during the book club time "real life" got in the way. I'm actually reading it right now. I'm about halfway through so I didn't read your post Memphish but I did find it interesting that there was a quote from the blast door map in it. "The remedy's worse than the disease."
Hey, guys - sorry about the casting spoiler. I figured that since it was a character that we already knew existed, it wasn't a big deal. I can take it down, if you want.
We haven't set a date for the next podcast yet, but that's a good point about Halloween.
David - should we plan on Tuesday, the 30th?
I'm still working on TTP, but I'll have questions as soon as I'm done.
memphish - thanks for the link. I've been meaning to see what those folks at the Post have been up to. :)
Tuesday the 30th at 5 sounds fine to me!! LEt's book it!
David A Dein
oops I mean 6pm
Rock.
It looks like there are some serious S4 spoilers in a new issue of TV Guide, so be careful. There are set photos from current shooting and info. on early S4 episodes. There are scans up at Lost-Media.com and I'd suspect it will start to show up in other places as well. You have been warned. And please don't discuss any of it here. I don't want to know.
memphish... thanks for the warning. I've tried so hard not to take peeks at stuff like this but we've been lost-deprived and I need my fix every now and then.
Memphish
I've seen the article in the TV Guide. I didn't find it to spoiler heavy. It's two pages of pictures with captions. The one picture would probably be a spoiler to most and there is one caption that's could be a spoiler to most but it's not too bad.
But everyone has there own idea of what a spoiler is. Like someone else here considered knowing cast and character news spoilers but most don't. I kind of do cause I'd rather find that out as we go but I wouldn't be distraught if I heard about it.
Thanks for the rundown Sayid's girl. I'm trying to avoid as much as possible so that I don't start speculating and then get disappointed when my lame ideas turn out not to be the way the show was headed.
You're welcome Memphish.
And I don't think your speculations are lame at all.
Hope this doesn't post twice the first time I tried it said blogger was down.
Right Sayidsgirl, I don't mind the news about characters and actors either, as long as they don't say, "...he's a freaky mad scientist that blows up the island." :o)
No one's ideas are lame, especially not your Memphish! But I kind of hope that TPTB actually won't do what I guess, because then I'll be more entertained with whatever they think up. Some things I don't want to speculate on, accept for theories that have been laying around unsolved from S1&2, or that pertain to TLE in any way, or the science, or the island, or, well I guess that I do want to speculate a lot.
I kind of wish that TPTB would come out and say not to speculate on certain things from early on, because they are not really going to explain them to us. Then we could avoid wasting time worrying about how they will be solved. But I guess that's not too practical in story telling.
For your reading enjoyment...
Lost reruns land at Sci-Fi, G4
Well that's very interesting IB4UC, and very savvy of G4 to do it like that.
Hmm, Lost 2.0 eh? I guess instead of the "Spock Market" they'll have the "Locke Market".
Should be good!
Hey gang: I haven't been around too much. My father-in-law (who's 86 today) has been taken off all meds and heroic efforts and we are keeping a vigil. We just had to put him in one of those dismal nursing home. Doctors tell us he can go anytime or within the next 2 weeks.
At least not being on on-line so much I can stay away from all those spoilers coming out. I don't mind the casting spoilers, but sometimes important info sneaks in or is implied.
Good news about the Sci-Fi airing of Lost 2.0! Web-enhanced elements sounds very intriguing.
Hopefully, I'll be able to participate in the podcast...but our lives are sort of on hold until his suffering ends.
It's been a very full few months for you Maven. You're in my thoughts...
Sorry to hear that Maven.
maven - so sorry to hear about your father in law. You and your family are in my thoughts.
LOST on Letterman.
So sorry to hear that Maven. XO and prayers.
Maven, you and your family are in my prayers. {{hug}}
That's so sad. Try to keep your spirits up. You're in my thoughts.
ib4uc - thanks for the news! I'll have to check out Lost 2.0... sounds cool. :)
memphish... thanks for the Lost on Letterman. His top 10's are always so funny.
maven... sorry to hear your news. Keep your chin up!
Maven,
our thoughts and prayers will be with you, and your family.
Thanks for everyone's kind wishes and thoughts through this terrible time. This is an awful ordeal watching him fade away and he really wants it to end. This might go on for one or two weeks...
At least we can still enjoy Elizabeth. Some more photos on on my blog.
Happy TGIF LoCos. Bullets are done. I'm not sure how insightful I was, but have a look if you are inclined.
Also, Maven! Those cheeks! I must say, Elizabeth looks fab in pink;)
How did everyone do on DarkUFO's first Fantasy League test? I got 135.
Memphish: My team got 45! LOL My husband's got 115. This is either going to be a lot of fun or very aggravating!
Going to check out Ange's Bullet Points..
Oh dear, my team only got 10 points! Ha, ha... sadly, only one of my players was even IN this episode. :)
maven, Elizabeth gets cuter by the week!
Maven, The episode was Exodus Pt. 2 so a lot of characters in the league weren't even on the show yet. Take heart. There are going to be 7 more test episodes before we hit the real thing. I've got Locke, Walt and Jin all who were pretty prominent in Exodus. I guess that's where most of my points came from.
Ha! My team got 150 pts, hubby's got 90! I am sure I will be in the negative when the real competition begins. :)
Maven - I can't believe she is a month old already! (and cute as ever!)
Everyone beat me so far, well except melissa_lossa ;). My team scored a 40. Although I like the league, I must say. It was kinda fun to check.
Maven,
Elizabeth gets cuter & cuter.
Keep those fantstic photos coming.
Update on Chucklez:
He's very down. No job yet and money is running out. He says he has exhausted all possibilities and feels all he can do is re-enlist in the military. Monday he's going to call a recruiter.
Pray for him.
Thanks for the update on Chucklez, amused. Sorry to hear about his bad luck and that he has to resort to re-enlisting. Hope things will improve for him.
Ooooh, just checked my points on DarkUFO... I got 195 points!
My team got 100 points at DarkUFO.
Thanks for the update on Chucklez he just doesn't seem to be able to catch a break does he.Hope things will turn around for him soon.
My team got 55 points
So sorry to hear about Maven and Chucklez misfortune. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Ange.......
Really enjoyed your Lost Bullet Points. Great read.
I'll pass along your prayers and good wishes for Chucklez along to him. Or you can give him a call at 205-563-3535 (I have his permission to post the # here). He'd really appreciate the call or better yet a text message (saves him the minutes usage).
I am tied for 2060th place at Darkufo with 15 points! LOL
Oh, and by the way...using the Feb 6th Wednesday date for the S4 premiere:
Tomorrow is 108 days to LOST!
w00t
Anyone see the Dharma logos on Survior: China last Thurdsay?

:)
Dennis: Thanks for those pics. Dharma logos....LOL. Cheered me up.
Weird photos. That's the Chinese Zodiac right? I wonder why they put them in those baguas. Probably so some LOST fan would post them and start discussing, eh?
Don't worry, I'll get you next time, ange! ;)
Sorry to hear about chucklez - please tell him that I'm thinking of him!
If he doesn't want to re-enlist, this is a great time to get a job in retail. Everyone's hiring for the holidays. Might be good for something temporary, at least, to get hm back on his feet.
That is interesting about the zodiac in the bagua. I've only ever seen the yin/yang or mirrors in the center of the I Ching symbols. But what do I know, I'm not Chinese. Could be just a decorative thing that is done sometimes too.
You're right about retail right now Melissa. Chucklez should be able to latch on to something soon. I worry about him that he makes so many impulsive drastic changes all the time. He needs to stay in one place for a while to level out. Starting over all the time is really hard on the wallet.
Thanks Martysbaybay
LOL melissa_lossa
Mentioning Chucklez, on a positive note, that book he added to extra credit (The Thief of Always) was great. I am doing it as a read-aloud with my class. I also have a student that hates reading, and guess which kids has asked when read-aloud was every day this past week. :D I like that!
capcom - I agree. I mean, I don't know anything about chucklez's life beyond what he's told us, but I would think that he would be better served trying to stick it out where he is, rather than re-enlisting.
I hate to think of him even farther away from his daughters!
heres the wiki link to chinese bangua, it pretty intersting, but i have always seen just a yin yang in there but if you read the wiki youl see tyhe zodiacs are not a stretch

Hey guys
This is a Heros question.
I know alot of you watch it and I was just wondering why do they refer to Noah Bennet as H.R.G.?
What does that stand for?
H.R.G. = Horn Rimmed Glasses. This nickname arose in the first set of episodes because the only other name for him was Mr. Bennet. Noah was revealed in the Season 1 finale.
I did not know that about HRG. Any bets on whether or not Claire's new guy is good or bad? (forgive me if I missed if they showed that while I was channel surfing!) :o)
Also, I just saw today on a History Channel show on the mob and Cuba, that 'Razzle Dazzle' was a game that Batista's people invented to cheat gamblers and get more revenue. It was something about how the dealer lets people win for a while and then they cheat and make the players lose a bunch to get all their money.
Mr. Melissa was watching something on G4 yesterday, and we saw a little teaser graphic for Lost 2.0 - it said "Lost is going interactive... coming Fall '08"
Guess we're in for another long wait! :)
ML, that G4 thing has to do with G4 and Sci Fi starting to air LOST re-runs in Fall '08. Supposedly the LOST 2.0 stuff is going to be on the Blue Ray version of the S3 DVDs as well, so if there's anything interesting in it the "community" should be able to find out about it starting this December.
Capcom, as for creepy West I think he's going to turn out to be related to DGG - Dorky Glasses Guy aka Bob Mohinder's new boss. Maybe DGG was put in charge of West like HRG was given Claire. BTW, this is a total guess on my part and not based in any way shape or form on anything reliable or for that matter logical.
Thanks Memphish. I knew I'd get an answer here. I didn't watch the first few episodes, well actually I watched the first two and it was a little to gross for me. I have been keeping up with it on line and talking with my sister. But she didn't know what the H.R.G. stood for either. I really like the story and I did watch last weeks episode. It seems a little less gross this season.
Capcom
I get the feeling West is a bad guy but I could be wrong.
Is Maven anywhere near the fires in California? My uncle lives in San Diego.
That sounds good about the new kid. I think that it is kinda dumb that they are making Claire be so stupid as to keep him a secret from Dad. I mean after all, there are Sylars and the other Hero-killers out in the world there, did she forget already? IMHO
Right, I hope that Maven is OK too. I guess that Tanya Tucker's son was being searched for earlier but I think they found him. It was said that $50 mil of damage had been done so far in Malibu, but wouldn't that be only about 1 or 2 celebrity mansions worth? It seems like an underestimation to me, unless they were talking about suburban area damage.
Hey, guys! Thanks for worrying about me! We are not near any of the fires, although my son and his family were about 2 miles away from the Canyon Country fire (they're in Valencia). We were on the way to visit Elizabeth yesterday, but the smoke was just too thick and we didn't want to get stuck there if something happened. We live in an area that had a devastating fire about 10 years ago (we were evacuated and 11 homes burned down on my street), so we wanted to be close to home. We always have bad winds, but we haven't seen it this bad in a long time. All these fires are so tragic.
P.S.: Malibu is about 30 miles from us; Canyon Country/Agua Dulce/ is about 20 minutes away; Castaic is about 30 minutes away. So we are in the vicinity of the big fires, and we see smoke everywhere, but nothing is threatening where we are (Porter Ranch/Northridge area of the San Fernando Valley -- a suburb area of LA). We did lose two hugh branches off a tree from the heavy winds.
Glad you are safe and sound Maven! Sorry about not being around to comment. Too much going on right now. My twins are doing well, and I am currently 33 weeks as of tomorrow. They will be here soon! I have decided to name them Juliet and Jack.... NOOOOOO just kidding! I hope everyone is doing well!
Maven Glad to hear you're safe and sound. I knew you were somewhere in the L.A. area so I wasn't sure how close the fires were. It's awful so many people are losing their homes.
Interesting article on how a writers' strike might affect LOST.
Christine, that would be very cool if you did name them Jack and Juliet. Those are nice names even without the Lost connection.
Maven, I'm glad to hear your area is ok. I hope it stays that way. My aunt and cousins have been evacuated, they live in San Diego. I am waiting to hear if their house is still intact. Sayid's girl, how is your uncle?
Is the bookclub podcast tonight or next week?
amused2behere
My uncle's fine. Thanks.
Morning all:
Christine said: "Sorry about not being around to comment. Too much going on right now. My twins are doing well, and I am currently 33 weeks as of tomorrow." If you think too much is going on right now...wait until your twin get here! LOL My son and daughter-in-law are exhausted with just the one. I'm sure you'll gets tons of help though. Maybe you can use Jack and Juliet as middle names! Keep us informed.
Thanks for the LOST/WGA strike info link, Memphish. The worst case scenerio would be awful for everyone. My Dad was a member of the WGA, so I might have a little different perspective since we still are getting residuals 5 years after his death. There, I don't think the writers are being greedy. The new technology has to be dealt with now.
Amused: I think the podcast is next week. There was talk about the 30th.
I guess the big fire news is now in San Diego. My friend and her daughter's family had to evacuate, too. How awful for everyone.
FYI: Looks like the next cup at DarkUFO's is a "Locations Cup". Get in your favorite location and hope it makes the list.
maven and everyone else in California - please be safe! I'm thinking of all of you.
Christine - good luck with the twins! Good to hear that everything is well. Maybe you could name them Shannon and Boone? ;)
The podcast is next Tuesday, October 30 at 6 p.m. ET. I'm still working on the book, so I better get moving!
Thanks for the article Memphish, I was wondering how that would affect Lost.
Maven- I'm so glad to hear that you and your family are ok. The news footage of the fires just make me want to cry. Hopefully the winds will die down soon and I heard that MAYBE there could be rain this weekend. Gosh I hope so if not sooner. Again- glad you guys are safe.
Make your own fish biscuits
Memphish- That is Hilarious! For a second, I thought I might be reading FYSB's blog.
Maven- I am glad you are safe, so far. How is your father-in-law? Tough fall for you! Thinking about you!
I am going to have to move soon, if we don't get some rain over here. CRAZY! Saw last night on the news that they are going to restrict the utility company's water output. *shrug*
Christine- Nice to see a post from you! I think those names are perfect.:) Keep resting. ;)
Hope everyone else is having a great week.
Best wishes to all our West Coast friends & relatives.I 've lived in South Florida most of my life,Down here, only Hurricane Andrew has come close to the devastation many are facing now.
It seems there are no "safe" places anymore in our great land.
Hang in there, and look up.
You know, that fishbicuit recipe story gets you wondering....did the Others spike Kate's and Sawyer's rations with drugs to spur them on to the monkey-love in the cage, with a resulting preganancy? Hmm.
maybe they just injected them with fertility drugs or julliettes serum so a katawyer baby would could be born with kate still surviving, perhaps thats why kate was all distant with jack in the future becuase she is involved with sawyer and they have a baby together
julliette claimed that the island problem was at conception so it would make sense if her only way to leave is a successful island pregnancy from start to finish that her best bet would be to give her cure injection to the potential mother before conception in anticipation of conception. They used human chemistry and pherimones to get the monkey love going, remeber how they made kate break rocks with sawyer, but made her wear a short little dress while doing it, or let kate think she was slick moving from cage to cage, while they were watching on cameras...
its almost like with rats if i just put the poison out they might not take it, but if i leave it in the box, they think they are slick and eat through the box to get to the poison.
The Southern Cal. windstorm seems to have quieted down, and the fires closest to me are all almost 100% contained. Lake Arrowhead (about 2 hours away) and San Diego are still major problems, although it's going in the right direction and not getting worse. The thought of losing one's home is awful, and I'm going to update my videotape inventory this weekend.
Memphish: Your Fish Biscuit link doesn't work for me. Get something saying can't connect to database.
2costa: It would make sense the Kate and Sawyer were all part of a major manipulation/conditioning experiment. After all, what they did do tied into getting Jack to help Ben.
That's good news Maven! Did you see the interview last night of Gov.Arnold by some news bimbo who was trying to find someone to blame the fires on? She kept asking him if this, that, and the other thing (basically the unpreparedness of the fire-fighters, their planes, etc.) wasn't at fault for the size of it, and he kept repeating that there was no way to have been able to fight all the unfortunate variables of this fire, and told her to stop trying to blame it on someone, all the while with a big smile on his face. That was so gratifying to see him do that and to shut her up, especially since she was trying to blame the the fire-fighters who have been working so hard.
BTW, try the site again Maven, it took me two times to get it for some reason.
Still no go, Capcom. I'll try again later.
I know that a lot of people are trying to blame the fires on: Too many National Guardsmen in Iraq (therefore they blame Bush); Overdeveloping the land; not letting previous fires thin out the vegetation; too few resources; global warming. The craziest one I heard on the radio today: Illegal aliens set the fires because they knew the National Guard would be called away from the border patrol and they can get across easier!
Well I can type it up and copy it here if you want.
One thing about the increasing numbers of wildfires, is the fact that so many forests and woody areas have had to be allowed to get overgrown due to new environmental restrictions on the prescribed controlled fires that used to be used regularly to keep all that in check. Therefore, there is a heck of a lot more brush and duff to catch quickly now. But wind direction, wind velocity, and the lack of rain can't be helped once it all gets started.
That's a weird one about the illegals. Perhaps El Chupacabra is learning to cook his goats before he eats them now, and he forgot to put his last campfire out. :o)
Maven, I got the link originally from Gitsie Girl. Maybe her link will work for you.
Thanks, Memphish. It worked! Those fish biscuits look yummy!
Got a few new pics of Elizabeth getting in the Halloween mood.
Maven, those pics are so sweet.
Is everyone over here watching Pushing Daisies? It is THE cutest new show of the season. I'm captivated by it. It is SOOOOOOO cute and funny and quotable. I have to tape, 7 pm and all that, but I love, love, love it. That and Reaper are the only new things I'm watching at this point.
I'm watching Daisies as I speak (type)! Love it too! It's so whimsical and magical. And the characters are captivating (love the Aunts).
Thanks for checking out my new pics, Memphish!
Maven, she's just gorgeous! I love the Mummy bib. Too cute!
And I love watching "Pushing Daisies". I missed the first two episodes or so, but I caught last week and this. Love that narrator...where have I heard that voice before?
Very Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice type of storytelling. I like it!
Amused: FYI: The Narrator is Jim Dale.
Watching Daisies in HD is so awesome. The way it's photographed, the costumes and sets are like nothing I've seen on TV.
Oh, I KNEW that some of you would be loving Daisies as much as I do! Isn't it a sweet, happy show? How cute was Ned last night when he set up the bees on the roof? Love it!
amused - the narrator, Jim Dale, has done all of the Harry Potter audiobooks, so that may be where you've heard him before.
maven - glad to hear that you're okay! What cute photos of Elizabeth!
Jess - hope you're hanging in there. Are you guys supposed to get any rain soon?
I invite you all to move to Michigan - we always have water and nothing ever catches fire, besides the occasional building in Detroit. :) There's no jobs, but I guess you can't have everything!
Oh, and good news - Pushing Daisies was picked up for a full season yesterday!
Oh, dear, some more bad news regarding the Lost curse: Daniel Dae Kim arrested for DUI.
Hi All,
I like Daisies too, but I keep forgetting to watch it! I too love the art and design of it. It's almost PeeWee Hermanesque as well. Just very colorful, retro, and interesting.
Oh no, too bad about Jin!
Yikes! Can the cast really not find anything else to do besides drink down there? I mean, it's Hawaii for crying out loud! :)
Is anyone having trouble getting on DarkUFO today? The banners come up, but no posts.
DarkUFO works fine for me Maven. He's updated the look of the website and I'm not sure I like the change, but it all comes up for me.
It's working now...thanks, Memphish.
Vote for LOST at Entertainment Weekly -- Click on: Which Mid-season show are you most excited to see?
BTW: LOST is leading at 56% right now!
Maven and Melissa: Thanks for the info on Jim Dale, I thought he might be the HP narrator...
Tough break for Daniel Dae Kim. I hope nothing happens to Jin because of it!
Maven- I put my vote in. :) It is getting hard to wait now. It seems like a lifetime ago since it has been on. *sigh*
Hey, everyone - here's some more vague casting news, for those who are so inclined: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/34581
FYI: A statement from Daniel Dae Kim:
"AN APOLOGY
I am deeply ashamed and embarrassed by my actions of Thursday morning. It saddens me to know that I jeopardized the welfare of the kind people of Hawaii, a community that I love and call my home.
It is my intention to cooperate fully with the police and I am grateful to them for their sensitivity throughout this matter.
To my friends, family, colleagues and fans, thank you for your kind words of support. To those I have disappointed I can only ask that you accept my heartfelt apologies. I am truly, truly sorry.
Source: DDK@Myspace"
I hope they don't kill Jin.
More LOST and the writers' strike.
Also for the visually-spoiler-inclined, check out this site for some recent astounding location photos that have been confirmed by DarkUFO:
http://sawyer840.blogspot.com/
If you quickly skip down halfway to speed over the spoilery parts, the rest of the blog has some incredible location shots from past eps that are really sweet.
The most comprehensive article about a potential writers' strike I've seen. It also quotes Lindelof.
Hi Everyone, I hope you're all enjoying the weekend!
I actually had 30 seconds to sit down and catch up on posts. I know TTP discussion is this week, but if you've started Turn of the Screw, there is a free downloadable audio version of it HERE that's pretty good.
I found I had a lot of trouble with the language and am actually reading it at home and listening to it on my commute.
I'm off to be perplexed about Daniel Dae Kim and catch up on Lostie blogs. Enjoy the Sunday.
Hi all, I've just had the Season 3 box set delivered here in the UK and I've dived right in to the extras.
The Book club feature is fairly short and just goes over some of the ground already discussed here.
I haven't finished the rest as I got hooked on the Room 23 Easter Egg. To get the genuine experience I put the video on repeat and strapped myself into a chair !
wonder if jin was drinking gin
He was having a jin & tonic.
I posted a new pic of Elizabeth on a new quilt I made for her.
Podcast tomorrow?
Maven,
Adorable.
Off 2 C Heroes.
Everyone: My father-in-law passed away tonight. Finally, he's at peace.
Maven I don't really know what to say other than my thoughts are with you and your family.
Maven, my heart is with you and your family. I am grateful Dad is at peace, now I pray that your family is able to walk the path of mourning with peace as well.
I'm glad he got to hold Elizabeth. Great grands are an extra special blessing.
maven - I'm so sorry about your father-in-law. amused is right, it's so wonderful that he got to see Elizabeth before he passed on. I am glad to know that he has finally found peace.
My heart is with you and your family.
